PRESIDENT’S REPORT Julie Hope-Johnstone

It is my pleasure to report on the activities of the Club over the 2018/2019 financial year. Our calendar of events, both on the course and in the clubhouse, continue to grow and evolve as our membership becomes more active year to year. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some key items of interest throughout the last year.

Financial Performance I am pleased to inform members that the Club has recorded a net profit of $556,382 (2018 $185,670). This is particularly pleasing given the uncertain economic times and the industry pressure on golf memberships.

This positive result also ensures that the Committee can continue its work on developing a master plan for enhancing our facilities for members of today and the future. The Treasurer and Chair of the Finance SubCommittee, Rod Ashby, will expand on the results in his report.

Clubhouse and Environs Master Plan (‘’CEMP”) Over the past 12 months the Clubhouse and Environs Master Plan working group has worked diligently in progressing the development of the master plan. In June, the Committee was delighted to announce the appointment of Demaine Partnership Architects to advance the master plan. Demaine has a wealth of experience in the master planning of clubhouses, most notably Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, Sorrento and Peninsula Kingswood. The project to develop our clubhouse brings unique challenges, particularly where heritage considerations are concerned. The Committee is confident that Demaine Partnership will successfully combine the need to modernise and update our clubhouse, whilst being sympathetic and respectful to our past.

Powerlines There is no doubt that the removal of the three most southerly power poles and associated power lines vastly improved the outlook both to, and from, the clubhouse. The final cost of the powerlines (reported in the 2017/18 financial year) was $192,342 with $15,800 coming from member donations through the Australian Sports Foundation. I thank these members for their generous contributions.

19th Hole The Committee has been frustrated by the slow-moving approvals process for the planning permit for the 19th hole, a project that will allow a full 18 holes to be in play during periods of course maintenance. This project was identified as an action item in our 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, and the Committee will continue to work assiduously towards its construction.

Course Rankings Course rankings are a highly subjective area with a myriad of opinions about what makes a golf course. One of the most respected journals on golf course rankings is Tom Doak’s ‘Confidential Guide - Vol.5’. The Club had the pleasure of hosting a visit from Doak and it seems he was impressed with what he saw. Barwon Heads moved up from 5/10 on his last visit to 7/10. Those in the know, will appreciate the significance of this improvement.

Club Events I have been delighted with the attendance by members and friends at several Club events throughout the year. Some of the highlights include longstanding events such as the Shaw Foursomes, our popular twilight golf events and the annual wine dinner. Additionally, we have seen members enjoy some of our special events such as the junior golf week family barbeque, the book talk by Charlie Happell and Michael Clayton, the gin dinner and the amazing presentation by Simon Holloway on the Marathon Des Sables. Our strategic plan is to provide a vibrant and varied calendar of events each year to enhance the membership experience.

We also continue to host, in collaboration with 13th Beach, the Victorian Junior Open. In December last year it was a thrill to see our beautiful course streamed live to those following the final round of the junior event.

80 Years of Membership!

I had the pleasure of having morning tea with two very special members during the year: Tony Street and Dick Collins. Tony and Dick had reached the rare milestone of 80 years continuous membership at Barwon Heads, both joining as 12-year-old boys (within a few months of one another) in 1939. guests and visitors to the Club. The Club is looking forward to providing a wonderful new environment for the Professionals to operate from, which in turn will enable them to continue to deliver the best experience for members and visitors.

Staff Barwon Heads is fortunate to have dedicated and enthusiastic staff across all areas of our operation. Our thanks go to General Manager Anthony Masters, Course Superintendent Adam Lamb and his team, Finance Manager Darryl Ivermee, Clubhouse Operations Manager Nigel Newton, Head Chef Rodney Lewis, Golf Operations Manager Narelle Alford, Membership Coordinator Roseanne Conheady, Marketing and Communications Coordinator Adam Palmer and Member and Guest Services Jenny Cooper plus all staff across the administration and the clubhouse for their contribution throughout the year. As we all know, without our wonderful staff, Barwon Heads would not be the place it is today. It is not only members who praise their personalised touch, but the many guests who pass through our doors on a regular basis.

Sub-Committees Volunteering is always at the heart of vibrant clubs, and Barwon Heads is no different. Our hard working “flower ladies” always delight in their creations that adorn various parts of our clubhouse, however we only ever see their creations and not the creators themselves. We thank them for the beauty they provide every day.

Our Sub-Committees work tirelessly with representatives from management throughout the year to ensure that all facets of Club life are well organised and enjoyed by members. These include: Course & Match Sub-Committee chaired by Frank Webb, Women’s Golf chaired by Women’s President Sue Reilly, Finance chaired by Rod Ashby, the Future Fund chaired by Amanda Derham, Membership chaired by Marg Austin and Land Management Advisory Group chaired by Graeme Swinton.

I have had the pleasure and good fortune to have worked with a very strong and capable Committee and an outstanding Club management team led by Anthony Masters. I thank everyone for their energy and commitment to our great Club.

To those that are retiring this year, I offer my heartfelt thanks to you for your purpose and dedication to the Club.

Committee I would like to also personally thank my fellow Committee members for their unwavering support and commitment in my first year as President.

The success of any club is directly related to the quality of its governance and I have been fortunate to have a diverse, thorough and dedicated group of Committee members whose individual talents and areas of expertise have provided a solid foundation upon which to govern.

I would like to congratulate Frank Webb on his retirement as Captain.

He has overseen a dynamic golf program and combined with his cheery persona and hard-working ethos, he has contributed to the Club on many levels. Â I also thank and congratulate Rod Ashby who retires as Treasurer. His dedication to the success of the Club can be seen in the excellent financial results and his contribution to the Future Fund, CEMP and Billiards Sub-Committees.

I wish both Frank and Rod all the best in their retirement from the Committee. I also look forward to working with the new Committee and the hard-working management over the next 12 months, which will prove to be an exciting and productive period.

Finally, to all our members, I want to say thank you for and commend you on your passion for our Club. It is not only your willingness to support our vast array of events, but your enthusiasm throughout the year, that makes The Barwon Heads Golf Club one of the best.

FINANCE The financial performance of the Club for 2018/19 was the strongest for a number of years, delivering above budget profit performance and the maintenance of a strong balance sheet. This result continued the positive trend in our key performance indicators and aligned with our strategic goal “to oversee a management process that delivers an annual profit after depreciation costs to ensure sustainability of ongoing capital investment needs.”

Food and Beverage operations (Note 4) produced a deficit of $212,211 (2017/18 - $219,853), an improvement of $7,642. The Committee is pleased to report on the improving member and guest feedback over the past 12 months.

Golf and Tennis surplus (Note 5) of $305,932 was higher than the previous year ($252,650) due to revenue increases relating to green fees.

•

Operating expenses increased by $239,385 or 3.5% compared with a 4.12% increase in 2017/18.

•

Course and Grounds expense (Note 7) decreased by $28,649. This is primarily a result of the course development plan at effective completion.

•

Depreciation (Note 8) increased by $3,916 to $905,773 as a result of capital expenditure of $433,499 ($473,989 in 2017/18).

The total surplus of $556,382 ($185,670 in 2017/18) and the operating surplus of $172,583 ($33,339 in 2017/18) both exceeded budget.

The Club also recorded a net cashflow from operating activities of $1,511,590 (up from $994,392 in 2017/18), and incurred capital expenditure of $433,499, largely resulting in an increase in current assets from $6,325,305 at 30/6/18 to $7,384,836 at 30/6/19, an excellent increase of $1,059,531.

This healthy position is a credit to past and current committees and the management team for their due diligence and sound financial management of the Club’s operations.

The operating surplus of your Club was affected by many factors, some of which are as follows: •

Members (Note 2) reported an increase in surplus of $192,465 as a result of the increase in annual subscriptions applied at the start of the year. Forfeited house levy remained steady at $79,617.

Accommodation surplus (Note 3) of $406,612 decreased by $70,941 compared to the previous year. It is important to note that the decrease was not a result of trading performance, with room occupancy at 60.3% (compared with 2018- 60.9%) but with additional expenses incurred due to a WorkCover claim and restructuring of the night porter position.

The Committee have set the fees for 2019/20 with a 3.7% increase to cover increased costs and maintain our strong financial position.

The Committee is acutely conscious of the uncertain economic times and the sustained period of record low interest rates, which affect many of our members. The Club continues to defy the state and national trends of decreasing member numbers, but the Committee is also aware that it cannot become complacent. The Club needs to appeal to our current membership and to attract future members by continuing to drive value in the member offering.

I would like to congratulate our General Manager Anthony Masters and Finance Manager Darryl Ivermee for their stewardship of the Club’s funds during the year. Thanks also to Sub-Committee members for their expert input and support during the year.

John Owen took out the 2019 NSW Senior Amateur event in a thrilling finish at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club.

COURSE AND MATCH Following the near completion of our Course Development Plan, the past 12 months has been one of consolidation for our golf course. Our course staff led ably by Superintendent Adam Lamb, continue to prepare and present conditions for members that are the envy of many clubs.

One of the goals of the Committee was to increase the usage of the fourth high tee, arguably one of the most stunning tee shots in Australian golf. The tee was levelled and returfed with Santa Ana and the stairs fully reconstructed. This work has allowed us to program more events playing the high tee, of which I am certain has been most appreciated by members and guests alike.

Earlier this year, I reported on the coast beard-heath (Leucopogon parviflorus) that had suffered from the sustained drought conditions and was showing signs of distress. This occurrence was quite widespread along the Bellarine and Surf Coast, and after the welcomed winter rains, it is hoped that many of the bushes have survived.

The Committee decided to eradicate the South African couch which had been steadily growing in the third fairway. Following trials of spraying out the invasive couch, it was decided to excavate the area and utilise native soil from a private site cut in Bell Street. Native couch was then harvested from the fifth fairway to returf the area. Results to date are pleasing but the course staff will continue to monitor the area.

On 1st January, we saw the biggest revision of the Rules of Golf with a total of 31 major rule changes occurring. Through the monthly newsletters, the Club informed members of the major rule changes and the Course and Match Sub-Committee has been delighted with how the members have adapted to the new rules.

One of the major frustrations at golf clubs worldwide is the instance of slow play. Unfortunately, we are not immune to this at Barwon Heads. However, in May 2018, the Committee revised its Pace of Play Improvement Policy and introduced a three-tier system in which member times were monitored daily. Those members falling outside the Club’s target times, were subsequently written to, advising them of the instance of slow play and providing advice on ways to improve their pace. These letters have been well received and the Committee believes are having a positive impact on the round times. I thank all members for their attention to this matter, as Barwon Heads does not seem to have the amount of slow rounds experienced at many other Clubs.

The Committee has been extremely frustrated with the slow progress of the planning permit process required to construct our 19th hole.

There have been delays outside the control of the Club and we are endeavouring to finalise this process as soon as possible. The 19th hole

will enable a full 18 holes to remain in play for members and guests and provide flexibility for the course maintenance staff to conduct works on any hole in isolation.

As always, our golfing calendar is full of events, some of which have been contested for decades, and others new to the calendar. I would like to congratulate the winners of the Club Championships: Mark Cashinella, his third championship; and Heather Brodie, her seventh championship.

Our combined Club Championships continues to go from strength to strength, with many other Clubs looking closely at our successful format.

Our women hosted another successful Marrum Cup, the 94th edition of this wonderful event, with the team from the National Golf Club being successful. Both of our men’s and women’s invitational events are always popular occasions and it is great to see the number of clubs that return to Barwon Heads year after year.

We were proud to host the second Junior Victorian Open, combined with 13th Beach Golf Links. I would like to congratulate Victorian, Jasper Stubbs (283) and South Korean, Min A Yoon (276) on their victories in the boys’ and girls’ events respectively. I would also like to make mention of the effort of Barwon Heads member, Angus O’Brien, who shot the equal best round on the final day to finish in fourth place overall. Well done Angus!

I would like to congratulate member, and six-time Club Champion, John Owen who took out the 2019 NSW Senior Amateur event in a thrilling finish at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club.

The organisation of men’s pennant has been a labour of love for Gary Hill for the past two decades. This year, Gary decided to retire as the coordinator of the pennant teams, and I would like to congratulate and thank Gary for his significant contribution during this time. Barwon Heads secured four pennants during this period and came close on many other occasions. I welcome Gary O’Brien, who has kindly offered to take over the pennant coordinator role in 2020.

I would like to thank the dedicated members of the working bee group, led

by Graeme Swinton, for their assistance in the continual improvement of our vegetation management. Thanks to the dedicated Course and Match Sub-Committee of Zara Brookes, Tony Hedley, Ashley Andrews, Ian Donnelly, Lindsay Raybould and Pat Lockie who provide oversight of our program and hands-on assistance at many events.

As I step down as the Club Captain, I would like to thank Narelle Alford for her valuable support in Golf Operations and Superintendent, Adam Lamb for his efforts in maintaining our golf course and surrounds.

WOMEN’S GOLF Sue Reilly, President

The 2018-2019 year began with a very successful Invitational Challenge event which saw a total of 18 teams of four women coming from all corners of the country and from across the Tasman to compete over two days. There was a lively atmosphere in the clubhouse as old friends met up and new friendships were formed. The overall winning team was The National. I would like to thank the Clubhouse Operations Manager and his team for their diligent and friendly service at this event and throughout the year.

Congratulations to the Club Champion Heather Brodie, and to Deb Fowler and Isobel Lucas our B grade and C grade champions respectively.

The Women’s Golf Sub-Committee welcomed three new members this year, each of whom has brought a wide range of experience to our group.

Again seven in number, we work as a team to ensure that the many and various women’s golf events run smoothly.

This year we fielded five Friday pennant teams (in divisions 1,2,3,4 and 6) and one Sunday team. The weather influence continued with rain washing out one Friday during the season. This necessitated using the ‘spare’ Friday at the end of the season which happened to be the day of the rescheduled Ripple Cup! Again, the staff at the Club proved that nothing is ever too much trouble! Some divisions saw a very close contest, but no flags were won. There was a great deal of camaraderie however and many tales were told at the wind-up evening. Thanks go to the pennant team captains for their enthusiasm and leadership Div. 1 Ann Manuell, Div. 2 Jackie McDonald, Div. 3 Wendy Amor, Div. 4 Bronnie Robson, Div. 6 Sandie Rankin and Anne Taylor on Sundays.

With guidelines from the Golf Australia Vision 2025, the SubCommittee has continued to promote women’s golf and their enjoyment of belonging to our Club. Specifically, we have focused on raising the profile of the nine hole game – for those new to golf as well as those more experienced golfers who prefer playing a shorter game. Next year for the first time there will be a trophy presented to the best eclectic score in the nine hole competition during the year.

The traditional exchange with Sorrento competing for the Ripple Cup in the New Year was postponed due to extreme heat. The cooler replacement day in May saw the home team, Barwon Heads, reclaim the cup.

Junior Golf Week ran smoothly with high enrolments in the junior age groups. The Monday evening barbeque was a fun family event held outside under the verandah and out onto the 18th fairway. We were blessed with a warm and still evening – enjoyed by toddlers, children, teenagers, parents and grandparents alike. True to form, the coastal weather got the last laugh however, with some serious rain on the last day of competition. The three events on the Friday are parent/grandparent and child foursomes so coats and umbrellas were shared in good spirit!

The Barwon Heads District Bowl is a popular event held in February and the field was full on yet another very warm Monday. Many have taken turns to represent our Club to go to regional and city bowls. Again, this year there is no silverware news but quite a few reports of ‘nearly’ and ‘if only’. Thank you to those who put their names forward to support these events. I know you are rewarded with a unique insight into how other clubs work and the pleasure of meeting other women golfers.

Another heat wave influenced our golfing this year when our qualifying rounds for the Championships were modified to early shotgun starts on both days. This decision was not taken lightly but was appreciated by all who played, and everyone finished the rounds in good health. The finals 10 | BHGC ANNUAL REPORT 18/19

Marrum Cup – in its 94th year – was a wonderful week of golf and golfing friendship. The National was the overall winning team but there were many winners during the week. It is a time when the Club really showcases not only its food and hospitality and its wonderful course, but also its members and their enthusiasm about the Club. Thank you to all the volunteers who spotted out on the course to assist the players.

I would like to thank Zara Brookes, the Captain of the Women’s Golf Sub-Committee for a very successful term in office so far. She is diligent and personable and reaches out to young and old members alike – and has been a pleasure to work with. Thanks also to the other members of the Sub-Committee – Ro Noone, Jenny Rogers, Nonee Steer, Deb Fowler and Sandie Rankin, for their enthusiasm and cheerfulness in working together for the good of women’s golf at The Barwon Heads Golf Club.

Communication with the Main Committee has again been maintained through attending two meetings during the year and having regular face to face catch ups with the President, Julie Hope-Johnstone. It has been an exciting time working alongside our first woman Club president and I thank her and Club Captain Frank Webb for their support during the year.

The Club’s Junior Golf Program aims to support juniors of all levels of ability and interest with a comprehensive program:

Victorian Open; and making his men’s division one pennant debut with two strong wins. He added to these fine performances by winning the Johnny Miller Junior Classic at Silverado Golf and Spa Resort, Napa Valley US during the July school holidays.

Tom Thiele showed consistent improvement throughout the year lowering his handicap from 11.2 to 4.8 and looking every bit a future scratch golfer.

3. Once interest becomes more serious, the Club’s open time sheet policy means Juniors are supported to obtain a handicap, play in Club events, be part of junior pennant and district junior events.

Sunday Aces This year our Sunday Aces was once again conducted on the first Sunday of each month with an ideal 12 to 15 participants every month.

Aces Claudia & Ben Collins, Mitchell Charleston and Campbell Shier had the thrill of starting the 2019 Victorian Open at 13th Beach Golf Links which was a golfing experience they will never forget. The previous week on the European men’s tour the Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hit the ceremonial first shot.

State Events Campbell Shier was our only young junior to make the final stage of the Victorian Primary Schools State Championships at Kooringal Golf Club in December 2018. Campbell has been joined by Claudia Collins in the regional stage of this year’s state-wide event and hopefully Claudia will be our first girl to make the state final in 2019.

Victorian Junior Open In December last year the Club in conjunction with 13th Beach Golf Links again hosted the Victorian Junior Open. The 72-hole event carried Australian and world ranking points ensuring the best juniors from Australia and Asia converged on Barwon Heads. The final day was played at the Club and the superbly presented course combined with tough weather provided a true championship links test.

Once again there were many highlights over the past 12 months as our juniors performed exceptionally well in Club, state and district junior events.

Junior Pennant

Community

With the junior pennant season moving from February to October we have no junior pennant report this year. An exciting outcome of this change is that the winners of the SWGA Ford Cup will now participate in the Victorian State Pennant Finals. We will once again have a strong team in 2019 and after an 18 months hiatus we are all looking forward to the 2019 season.

After several years our Community Golf Day is now a much-loved event with a full field taking part in August 2018 raising $7,800 for the local primary school. Following golf, the Clubhouse was full of partners and children capping off a great day.

FUTURE FUND The Future Fund was established in 2011 to provide long-term financial support for The Barwon Heads Golf Club so that it can remain a pre-eminent Club and be enjoyed by generations of members to come.

While market volatility continues, the fund has had a good year meeting its investment mandate and growing steadily. As of the 30th June 2019 the balance was $1,858,165 (2018- $1,734,413) invested according to a conservative asset allocation across listed equities and fixed interest securities with income being reinvested. There were no special projects announced and no contributions to the corpus.

Members can contribute to the long-term future of the Club for their children and grandchildren in three ways. Firstly, with a tax-deductible donation via the Australian Sports Foundation www.asf.org.au that flows through to the Fund. Secondly, by a donation to the Future Fund or, thirdly via a bequest. Donors can elect to be acknowledged or remain anonymous. To discuss making a donation please contact me personally or the General Manager, Anthony Masters.

The Governors warmly thank Julie Hope-Johnstone for her careful stewardship as Chairman of the Future Fund and continued involvement as Club President. Following a rule change at the AGM allowing governors to elect the chair, I was honoured to take on the role in 2018.

My thanks go to Governors Rod Ashby, John Clark and Mark Cashinella whose wise council and market expertise ensure informed decisions continue. Thanks also to newly elected Committee members Andrew de Crespigny and Graeme Willis who joined as governors during the year.

Graeme has undertaken a detailed review for the Committee that will inform our future path.

I look forward to serving the Club in the role of chair and thank you in anticipation of your future support.

The Club has welcomed 47 Provisional Members, six Social Members and seven Junior Members and welcomed back five re-joining members in the year ending 30th June 2019.

The Membership Sub-Committee actively promotes the attraction of The Barwon Heads Golf Club to all members and with that in mind is developing a strategy to maintain our strong membership. With retention and attraction strategies in place for the future, more social activities are to be planned.

During the year the membership was encouraged to play golf on the first Sunday of the month. This was especially aimed at our new members, giving them the opportunity to meet members socially after a few holes of casual golf.

All new applicants and their proposers meet with the Membership SubCommittee prior to the new member joining The Barwon Heads Golf Club. This is an important step in the process and has proven a successful experience for both proposers and new members. The Committee considers the role played by a proposer to be critical, particularly in the first year of their candidate’s membership. Ensuring that new members

are welcomed and included in all aspects of Club life, will ensure that the transition to membership is a smooth one.

The annual 50+ year lunch was once again very successful, with many members and partners renewing old friendships. This year 64 attended and we welcomed seven new members to the group.

I would like to thank Roseanne Conheady for all her assistance and her work in maintaining all the information relating to membership.

TENNIS The Rip Cup, which was due to be played in January this year, was postponed due to hot weather on the day. It was re-scheduled to be played in May, but unfortunately Sorrento could not muster the numbers for a team, so we did not compete for the Cup this year.

Thank you to all the players, young and old, who entered these events during our ‘Summer of Tennis’, and to the parents and others who provided support, encouragement and transport for the juniors.

Men’s and women’s weekly tennis is played on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, and all new players are most welcome.

The 2019 Junior Tennis Week was run in perfect weather in January, with many young tennis players playing excellent tennis.

Congratulations to all winners and runners-up for reaching the finals. It was a pleasure to watch so many young players compete in a wonderful sporting and competitive spirit, which is a credit to them all, and their parents - well done. Unfortunately, after only receiving two entries, we had to cancel the Under 19 competition. This was a great pity as it has been well supported in previous years, and we hope the entries bounce back next year for this age group.

I must give special thanks to Chris Swinton for her energetic, calm and detailed work in compiling the daily draws for Junior Tennis Week. This is not an easy task, with late changes, and sorting partners for the mixed doubles: her work every day is greatly appreciated by us all. In addition, Frank Webb gave valuable assistance to the organisers and players every day in his most obliging manner, which was much appreciated. Thanks are also due to the other members who gave us wonderful assistance: Daryl Batrouney at the town courts, David Jarman, Jill Webb, Pat Lockie and JEG Robertson. We were most ably assisted by Narelle, Damien and Nigel from the Club, who ensured we had everything we needed, including food and drinks for the young players and spectators.

Adam Lamb and his ground staff must also be thanked for keeping the courts in first class condition and the umbrellas erected for shade.

Events concluded subsequent to the 2019 Annual Report are as follows:

The Billiards Room continues to provide members and house guests with a first-class facility for playing games on the green cloth.

Regular groups of members can be found in the Billiards Room and not only when wind and rain drives golfers indoors. Play in the Billiards Room forms part of the contest for many groups of house guests on their annual stay at the Club.

However, the Billiards Room has a capacity to accommodate much more use by members. Coaching is provided, particularly by SubCommittee member Jeff Stagg, and less formally by members who willingly share their skills.

Doubles and singles handicap pin pool events for women are conducted. Handicap and scratch events in billiards, snooker and pin pool test, at present, only male members but the challenge is there for the Club to have its own Ruth McGinnis.

Having served as chair of the Sub-Committee for the last five years, I will retire from the Sub-Committee in November 2019. I thank SubCommittee members Lyn Fraser, Ted Cockram, Jeff Stagg and Rod Ashby for their contribution.

BRIDGE Bridge participation at the Club continues to increase. Most players play regularly, and it is gratifying to see the improving confidence and standard of play of this group.

Monday bridge usually attracts a full field, with its mix of supervised and unsupervised play and the occasional lesson. Gary and Jenny Lee backed up by me continue to direct these mornings.

Overall, a good year for bridge. With regular full fields the bridge players look forward to the planned changes to the clubhouse with its increased capacity.

Thanks go to the other members of the Bridge Sub-Committee: Gary Lee, Sherryl Nelson, Jan Sprague and Julie Hope-Johnstone.

Thanks also to the Club staff for their support, particularly Roseanne Conheady, Adam Palmer and the coffee makers.

The Wednesday bridge players also have to book early to secure a place.

Evening dinner and bridge is very well supported through the summer holidays. Outside this time the monthly ‘First Friday Bridge’ is run as demand requires. Sherryl Nelson directs this evening.

The regular open bridge has settled into a Friday morning time slot.

Most Fridays there are at least enough players to fill three tables and run a formal competition, with myself directing.

Saturday afternoon’s convivial bridge, organised by Ginny Palmer, is well supported, as are many informal gatherings to play the game.

The annual Bay Bridge Challenge is played between teams from Peninsula Kingswood, Sorrento, The National and Barwon Heads Golf Clubs. This year it was a win for Barwon Heads! The Barwon Heads teams were: –

THE BARWON HEADS GOLF CLUB INC. Notes to, and forming part of the accounts for the year ended 30 June 2019 Note 1. Summary of Significant Accounting Policies The Barwon Heads Golf Club Inc. (The Club) is a nonreporting entity and accordingly the accounting policies adopted are those required for a special purpose financial report. This financial report is prepared for the sole purpose of informing members and is not prepared for any other purpose.

The report has been prepared in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards as required for prescribed associations.

The Club is required under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 to comply with the following Australian accounting standards: AASB 101

Presentation of Financial Statements

(iii) Unused house levy forfeited Levies that have not been utilised at the expiration of their applicable period are forfeited to the Club and recognised as revenue. (iv) Interest Interest revenue on term deposits has been accrued in the accounts. Interest on trading accounts is recognised when the interest is deposited into the account at each month end. Interest earned on funds held in the Future Fund is shown separately from the Interest Revenue earned from Operating activities.

Collectability of debts is reviewed on an on-going basis. A provision for doubtful debts is raised where doubt as to collection exists.

AASB 118 Revenue AASB 119 Employee Benefits AASB 1054 Australian Additional Disclosures Australian Accounting Standards that have recently been issued or amended but are not yet mandatory, have not been early adopted for the period ended 30 June 2019. The standards are AASB 15, AASB 16 and AASB 1058.

AASB 9 Financial Instruments AASB 9 Financial Instruments replaces AASB 139 Financial Instruments: Recognition Measurement. It makes major changes to the previous guidance on the classification and measurement of financial assets and introduces an ‘expected credit loss’ model for impairment of financial assets. The impact of this standard has not had a material impact on the financial statements.

Inventories are stated at cost. Costs are assigned on the basis of actual and determined on a first-in-first-out basis.

Trade and other payables represent liabilities for goods and services provided to the Club prior to balance date and remain unpaid at balance date. (e) Interest bearing liabilities and finance costs Bank loans, if any, and other bank facilities are recorded at an amount equal to the net proceeds received. Finance costs are recognised as an expense in the period in which they are incurred.

The financial statements are prepared on an accrual basis and under the historical cost convention, except for certain assets, which as noted, were valued and reported at deemed cost.

The accounting policies adopted in preparing the financial statements have been consistently applied by the Club except as otherwise indicated.

(i) Subscriptions Revenue from subscriptions is recognised in the year to which it relates. (ii) Entrance Fees Revenue from entrance fees is recognised in the year to which it relates.

Revenues, expenses, assets and liabilities are recognised net of the amount of Goods and Services Tax (GST), except for receivables and payables, which are recognised inclusive of GST. The net amount of GST payable to taxation authorities is included in current tax liabilities.

Buildings previously valued by the Committee (July 2004) are now reported at deemed cost under AASB 1. Building additions post July 2004 and other property, plant and equipment are carried at cost.

Depreciation is calculated on the straight-line basis for assets with the exception of freehold land which is not depreciated.

Estimates of remaining useful lives are made on a regular basis for all assets, with annual reassessments for major items. The table below indicates the expected useful lives of non current assets on which the depreciation charges are based: Buildings

(h) Income tax Under section 23(g)(iii) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936, The Barwon Heads Golf Club Inc is considered exempt from income tax. (i) Definition of cash

While all amounts under the control of the Fund can be invested as the Governors consider appropriate there are two different methods of accessing any amount deposited in the Fund: (i) Sub-Fund A - Donations from members No amounts can be withdrawn from the Fund until such time as the Sub–Fund exceeds $1million. Once this level has been reached only earnings on the “corpus” of the Fund arising after the Fund exceeds $1million can be used for Club purposes and then only with the approval of the Governors. (ii) Sub-Fund B - Club contributions These amounts will not require the approval of the Governors to be withdrawn from the Fund and must be made available to the club on the request of the Committee.

All assets held by the Future Fund remain the property of the members of the Club.

Cash for the purposes of the cash flow statement includes cash on hand and cash at the bank, net of any overdraft. (j) Employee benefits - provisions Provision is made for benefits accruing to employees in respect of leave entitlements (annual leave, long service leave and accrued days off ) when it is probable that settlement will be required and they are capable of being measured reliably.

Provisions made in respect of leave entitlements expected to be settled within twelve months are measured at the amounts to be paid when the liability is settled plus related on costs. Provision made in respect of long service leave, which is not expected to be settled within twelve months, is measured as the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made in respect of services provided by employees up to the reporting date. (k) Future Fund The Club has established the “Future Fund” (Fund) to create a source of funds for future major capital projects or asset acquisition. The Fund is administered by 5 Governors who are Club members. The Fund is a Sub-Committee of the Club.

The Fund consists of two Sub-Funds. Sub-Fund A accumulates donations from members and income from those donations.

Sub-Fund B accumulates any funds the Club Committee considers appropriate to deposit with the Fund. In Prior years the Committee has resolved to transfer funds received by way of members Entrance Fees to this fund. However, during 2018 they suspended the transfer in order to provide for expenditure on Special Projects. The deposits and the income earned are accounted for separately within the Fund.

NOTE 20. CREDIT ARRANGEMENTS The Club’s debt facility is provided by Westpac Banking Corporation Ltd (Westpac). This is secured by a mortgage over the Club’s land. The facility limit currently stands at $1,040,000 none of which was utilised at balance date. This facility is by way of an overdraft.

NOTE 25. INCORPORATION STATUS The Barwon Heads Golf Club Inc. is incorporated in the State of Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012.

Its primary objective and principal activity is to provide, for its members, a golf course and clubhouse and other services incidental to the playing of golf.
