WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL On behalf of the Festival team, welcome to Banff Centre, located on the slopes of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain within Treaty 7 territory.

We are all on a journey, whether we know it or not. These last few years have sent us in directions that we couldn’t imagine. When life sends us reeling, the beauty is often in the journey itself, with the end goal overshadowed by the path taken to get there. Sometimes, we get to choose our starting point or destination, and sometimes we follow the ebb and flow of whichever current we’ve caught.

Whichever journey you’re on, there’s a story to tell - around a campfire with friends, or maybe you pick up a camera and capture a few moments while you’re underway. Perhaps you start clacking something out on that keyboard.

Whatever your story is, we have all experienced a transformational journey in our lives, and this year’s festival is case in point.

We acknowledge these traditional lands of the Stoney Nakoda Nations, Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy.

We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Shuswap Nations, Ktunaxa Nations, and Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.

Our 2023 program takes you on a ruckus ride to the rugged peaks of Kyrgyzstan, soaring high on the cliffs of Yamnuska and down to the inky depths of the Pacific Ocean, where new life is discovered and is already under threat. You will meet Elders, heroes, and underdogs. There will be some old familiar faces, and you’ll make new friends along the way. Some of the protagonists in this year’s films are obsessive – many are relentless in their search for that perfect line, while others prefer to find their own limits on the path to self-discovery.

Point your finger on a map and thrash through the jungles of Costa Rica to rediscover long-forgotten waterfalls.

There will be glaciers, untouched powder, and incredible waves to catch

(Just ask Frank!). Dive into the films, and you might find yourself jumping off Nameless Tower in Pakistan, climbing in Norway alongside Leo Houlding with his young kids in tow, or making first descents in the Coast Mountains. Be reminded how First Nation communities have cared for this land long before we arrived and how it’s now up to all of us to be stewards of the places we love, just as Jeremy Jones has made protecting winter his life’s work.

This year’s films and books are an emotional ride for the adventurous, so make sure your friends are close at hand. There will be a lot to talk about!

The 48th annual Festival takes a journey deep into the current times we live in, where individual issues resonate globally.

It seems like just when one journey is complete, we simply launch into the next.

Festival guests Jess Kimura, Ashima Shiraishi, and Sonnie Trotter might have something to say about the perpetual cycle of life and where it takes us.

I hope you enjoy this year’s films, books, and exhibitions. The quality of work submitted in 2023 is exceptional. We had record numbers of submissions to our competitions, and the bar is continually raised – you will see and hear that in the nine-day journey you are about to embark on. Tie in, and let’s begin.

Rab began in 1981 in the attic of a small, terraced house in Sheffield, England where Rab Carrington made the first sleeping bag to bear his name. Hand-stitched and devised with his own ingenious eye, Rab's experience from years spent in the mountains was apparent in his designs, and soon there was popular demand from Rab's friends and the growing local climbing community.

But things didn't stop there. Word soon spread, and the Sheffield attic became a factory floor, creating sleeping bags and jackets for customers far and wide. Now, decades later, those honest, hard-wearing designs can be found all over the world; wherever adventurous individuals face up to the elements. Rab is the official and exclusive apparel for the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival and World Tour Canada and United States Screenings

We are offering some accessible programs for visually and hearing-impaired and D/deaf audience members during the 2023 Festival. These programs will have on-stage ASL interpretation for live aspects of the presentations (speakers and MCs) and personal Dolby CaptiView viewing devices available for film captions and audio description.

During the Festival, the Box Office in the Jenny Belzberg Theatre, Margaret Greenham Theatre and a temporary one in the Max Bell Auditorium lobby, will be open 30 minutes prior to each showtime.

Theatres and Seating Banff Centre festival events are assigned seating in the Jenny Belzberg Theatre and Margaret Greenham Theatre and general admission in the Max Bell Auditorium. Doors will open approximately 30 minutes prior to each show. Last minute tickets for sold out shows will appear online immediately, and remaining tickets will be available for purchase at the Box Office in the lobby 30 minutes prior to screenings.

Latecomer Policy For the enjoyment of other patrons, latecomers will not be admitted into the theatre until a suitable break between films, at the discretion of the Front of House Staff. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled event and take into account the increased demands on traffic and parking.

After years of preparation, a team of highly motivated Quebeckers set out on one of the longest wilderness expeditions ever documented. Stage one involves skiing in relentless polar conditions from Ellesmere Island to the Northwest Passage. Cue canoes for a 2000-kilometre journey across Nunavut and NWT until they reach the first dirt road available where bikes are waiting to be pedalled 4000 kilometres to Point Pelee in Ontario.

Sam Berthe has always dreamt of climbing the Dawn Wall in Yosemite, one of the most difficult climbing routes in the world. But as everyone knows, getting there is half the journey. Especially when you decide to leave Europe by sailboat with a group of strangers, and a dog, to reach your destination.

In a small town perched in the mountains of Abruzzo, a unique competition has been held for centuries. Every year, in Pacentro, locals throw themselves from a cliff onto scree slopes where they run down to the stream, before running back up. The first to enter the church wins the so-called Corsa degli Zingari.

On the trail of nomadic peoples and the ancient Silk Roads, Thomas Delfino, accompanied

by Léa Klaue and Aurélien Lardy, embark on an expedition to reach one of the most remote places on the continent. The Kokshaal-Too range is located in the Tian Shan mountain range, on the border of Kyrgyzstan and China, and harbors unexplored mountain faces. This skilled team, accompanied by renowned guides Hélias Millerioux* and Jean-Yves Fredriksen, find themselves propelled into a space where time seems to have suddenly come to a halt.

A machoistic march on foot and on skis, with 80 kilograms per person carried over hundreds of kilometers through relentless moraines and tormented glaciers finds them at the base of Logan’s East ridge, where the 4000 meters of vertical drop have never been skied before.

LEO HOULDING, BOOK AWARDS – AND YAMNUSKA PREMIERE Thursday, November 2 | 7:30 pm Jenny Belzberg Theatre, Banff Centre $30 Britain’s Leo Houlding cemented his reputation as a remarkable climber when he free climbed El Capitan in Yosemite at the age of 18. He has since gone on to summit the world’s toughest peaks and explore the most extreme places on our planet.

His new book Closer to the Edge takes us on a whirlwind journey from Venezuela to Antarctica to Baffin Island and back to the Lake District in the UK to meet his young family.

This program begins with a presentation of the 2023 Banff Mountain Book awards.

Jeremy Jones is an awardwinning snowboarder and the founder of Protect Our Winters.

Jones has starred in dozens of snowboard films including his highly acclaimed trilogy, Deeper, Further, and Higher. He joins us for an on stage presentation and interview with climbing celebrity Timmy O'Neill about his new book The Art of Shralpinism: Lessons from the Mountains.

Jess Kimura is a renegade in snowboarding who has changed the game for women and whose legacy extends far beyond her accomplishments on snow. Kimura is one of the biggest advocates for representation in the sport, and has been an outspoken voice, creating platforms that empower other female riders. Her tenacity, resilience, and willingness to open up about her struggles have reshaped the landscape of what it means to be a pro athlete.

Award-winning artist Alex Buisse has worked as a professional adventure and humanitarian photographer in Chamonix for over a decade. He has climbed, skied, and flown all over the Mont-Blanc range, the Alps, and the world's greater ranges. Mont Blanc Lines is his new book, which is both a visual and visceral masterpiece of all the classic climbing routes in the region.

All and Nothing delves into the cultural history of free soloing.

Writer and climber Jeff Smoot explores the interplay of climbing and risk as well as psychological theories and evolving ethics, and shares original interviews with dozens of free soloists.

VOICES OF ADVENTURE – MINGMA G SHERPA Friday, November 3 | 10 am Max Bell Auditorium, Banff Centre $18 Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, aka “Mingma G”, began climbing at the age of 20 and became a prominent member of the international mountaineering community after his successful solo ascent of Chobuche, K2 in winter and the opening of the new summit route to the actual top of Manaslu. He has climbed thirteen of the fourteen 8000-metre peaks without supplemental oxygen and if he succeeds on Shishapangma, he will be the first Nepali to do so.

Mingma G joins us in Banff for the first time where he will sit down in conversation with local climber and author Geoff Powter.

CHACCU: THE VICUNA GUARDIANS Ana Caroline de Lima (Brazil) Max Bell Building Lobby Until November 5 How did an Inca tradition help to save an Andean animal from extinction? In Chaccu: The Vicuna Guardians, photographer, writer, and anthropologist Ana Caroline de Lima shows how the Vicunas play an important role in Andean communities. From 2017 to 2019, Ana documented families in Peru, showing how people's lives are connected to the Vicunas. Take a photographic journey to the Andes and learn more about this beautiful camelid, the wild relative of alpacas and llamas.

These heroic action portraits of tree planters honour the endurance, courage, and perseverance of youth facing a world of extraordinary challenges.

The artist uses artificial lighting referencing Classical painting, to accentuate the allegorical symbolism of the portraits. Tree planting is a notoriously tough job, demanding exceptional physical and mental endurance. Many consider it a Canadian rite of passage. Filming and photography took place from 2016-2019 in the tree planting camps of Coast Range Contracting in British Columbia Canada.

IN THE PRESENT MOMENT: BUDDHISM, CONTEMPORARY ART, AND SOCIAL PRACTICE Curated by Haema Sivanesan Walter Phillips Gallery Until December 13 Wednesdays through Sundays, 12:30 pm – 5pm In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art, and Social Practice examines how artists in North America have drawn on Buddhism as a methodology of art practice. It considers how Buddhism has contributed to important developments in contemporary art including the dematerialization of the art object, a phenomenon that radicalized art production and was key to the development of conceptual art and participatory art practices. The exhibition demonstrates the cultural impact of Asia on North America and reflects on an ongoing history of cross-cultural encounter and exchange.

Our relationship, which is in fact dependency, is physical when we plough the soil. And it's vital when we harvest the fruit of our labor. But many of us in urban settings have forgotten that this relationship is also spiritual.

We have forgotten that nature has guided our understanding of the world and ourselves for time immemorial. The effects of climate change today are not only compromising our survival but our ability to find meaning. Such is the case of Quechua pilgrims who every year trek across the Peruvian Andes to pay tribute to a slowly disappearing glacier.

This photo essay tells the story of a 200-year-old pilgrimage through the lens of culture, the environment, and climate change.

The 2023 Banff Mountain Film Competition received 486 film submissions from 40 countries.

One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners.

This process starts with our dedicated pre-screening committee who viewed all of the entries. From all the entries, 84 finalists from 13 countries were selected. This year’s Festival features 12 World Premieres, 14 North American Premieres, and 26 Canadian Premieres. Before the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, and mountaineering and exploration – screens each finalist and then will meet in Banff to determine the award winners.

A sincere thank you goes to each of them for helping us ensure that fine filmmaking is recognized and rewarded, and that our Festival programming continues to be of the highest quality.

The awards are announced on Sunday evening, November 5 in the Jenny Belzberg Theatre. The winners will be announced online at banffmountainfestival.ca.

Each year the Banff Mountain Photo Essay Competition showcases the best in mountain themed photography by recognizing photographers who have mastered the art of storytelling through still images. The 2023 competition saw 321 entries from many countries including Mexico, India, Poland, Czechia, Austria, and Germany. After reviewing photography from 20 finalists, our international jury selected Armando Vega’s essay titled Qoyllur Rit'i – The Snow Star Fades as this year’s Grand Prize Winner.
