Proper Club Attire – Dress Code Policy The Bald Head Island Club dress code adapts to today’s more casual living and is consistent with the expectations of a fine country club. It is the responsibility of each member to be aware of the Dress Code and to inform his/her family and guests prior to their arrival at the Club. This includes all outside rentals, tournaments and other special events. Themed events will be exempt at the discretion of the respective committee or the Board. Management will provide all event sponsors with the Dress Code and will direct sponsors to inform their guests and participants. Event sponsors will be held responsible for infractions of the dress code by their guests. While we expect that members will use good taste and judgment, the Board has directed Club Management to discreetly review any inappropriate casual attire decisions directly with the member or guest to ensure that the Club maintains a casual environment that is enjoyable for everyone.

Deliveries to the warehouse need to be arranged to arrive Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between the hours of 8am and 4pm. The warehouse must be notified within 48 hours in advance, for any deliveries that are going to be made. The Delivery Coordinator must be contacted at least 48 hours prior to any delivery by phone 910.457.5007 or by email: warehouse@bhiclub.net. You must receive a confirmation either by phone or email. The regular, on island delivery days are Wednesdays and Fridays. If you are expecting a large delivery, please coordinate the exact size and weight with the warehouse supervisor. (Total weight can be as important as exact size in some cases.) Smaller deliveries up to one cubic foot and a maximum weight of 40 pounds may be made for our regularly scheduled days if room is available. If no room is available, you may schedule a single run or wait for the next available scheduled run. The smaller deliveries may be picked up at the receptionist’s desk at the Bald Head Island Club. Once arrangements are made, members will be notified of a time frame when the delivery will be made. All deliveries are based on a first come, first serve basis. IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT DELIVERIES: Deliveries will always be made to your specifications. Please make sure someone will be home during the estimated arrival time. The delivery may be dropped off and left unattended at the front door if no one is going to be present and you agree in writing to this. The delivery price is to your home or business’ lowest level entry. The Bald Head Island Club is not responsible for items during delivery or drop-off. If you would like to have someone help assist you in moving your items inside the house please notify us in advance so we can make arrangements for movement and placement of the item(s). In-house deliveries will consist of an additional charge which will be determined on the size, weight, and time to make the delivery. If you wish to have something picked up and delivered off the island, someone must be present or the item will not be picked up. Off-island deliveries to the mainland need to be picked up within three business days from the warehouse. Any items left after the three days will be subject to a storage fee. If you would like something delivered to the landfill in Leland, there will be a charge of

17

BALD HEAD ISLAND CLUB 2018 Club Directory (continued) $100 per trip to the landfill plus the drop-off rate from Waste Management. Cancellations of shipments or pickup must be made within two business days in advance. A charge of off island deliveries to our warehouse will be determined by size, weight, and time to get the item to the BHIC warehouse.

Warehouse Delivery Rate Sheet Rates subject to change.

Size (1 Pallet = 45” x 42” x 48” high or 52.5 cubic feet) 1 Pallet or up to 500 pounds (52.5 cubic feet) ~ $75 2 Pallets or up to 1000 pounds (105 cubic feet) ~ $135 3 Pallets or up to 1500 pounds (157.5 cubic feet) ~ $180 4 Pallets or up to 2000 pounds (210 cubic feet) ~ $230 5 Pallets or up to 2500 pounds (262.5 cubic feet) ~ $270 Single Trip $495 ~ Full Truck

Items may be combined for a total cubic foot measurement. The total cubic feet is then divided by 52.5 to receive the amount of pallet space needed. This total will always be rounded up to the next even number. Example: 3 items to be shipped, Total Cubic Feet: 104 cubic feet = 1.98 = 2 Pallets 52.5. Each pallet has a maximum weight of 500 pounds. If your total size is less than 52.5 cubic feet, but the weight is over 500 pounds, you will be charged the next higher rate. Example: Total Size = 48 cubic feet, Total Weight = 750 pounds. You will be charged for 2 pallets. For every delivery over 2500 pounds or a total of more than 5 pallets or over 262.5 cubic feet, there will be a separate delivery trip for your items at a rate of $495. If your delivery requires a single run to your home or business, a charge of $495 will apply. An additional $85 charge will apply if a second person is needed to unload or load items. For items stored at the warehouse after three business days, there will be a $100 per week/pallet charge. With the delivery of specialty items, which are not comparable with pallets, the cargo size must not exceed 20 feet long by 90 inches wide by 90 inches high and must not exceed 5000 pounds. If items are not palletized, we will consider the measurements and weight and convert into pallet sizes. High pressure containers, like propane tanks or gas tanks in any form or fashion, cannot contain any flammable substances. These types of items will need to be empty before they can be placed on the truck for delivery. For items taken off the island, generally 1/2 of the pallet fees apply. Golf Course Aerification All great golf courses like ours include preventative maintenance as an integral part of successful golf course management. Golfers view aerification as an inconvenience that takes the greens out of play for a day, pulling cores from the greens and leaving holes that can affect putting for many days before healing. To add insult to injury, aerification is best done in many parts of the country during prime playing seasons and when most greens are in prime condition. But our members really need to understand how important aerification is to producing healthy turf. Aerification (also known as aeration) achieves three important objectives. It relieves soil compaction, it provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green's roots and it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch. Like so many things, the quality of a good putting green is more than skin deep. In fact, the condition of a green has a lot to do with what goes on below the surface. In order for grass to grow less than an 1/8 of an inch, it must have deep, healthy roots. Good roots demand oxygen. In good soil, they get the oxygen from tiny pockets of air trapped between soil and sand particles. Over time, the traffic from golfers' feet (as well as mowing equipment) tends to compact the soil under the putting green. When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air. Without oxygen, the grass plants become weaker and will eventually wither and die. Aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting, thus helping the grass plants stay healthy. In most cases, it's done by removing half-inch cores (those plugs you sometimes see) from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water that brings a resurgence of growth. The spaces are then filled with sand "topdressing" that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward. Finally, growing of turf adds to a layer of organic matter on the surface. This layer, called thatch, is an accumulation of dead stems, leaves and roots. A little organic matter makes for a resilient green, but too much invites diseases and insects. Topdressing with sand can prevent thatch buildup, and aerification is one of the best ways to reduce an existing layer and prevent an excess of thatch from becoming established. Excerpts from this article were taken from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Golf Course Operations, Maintenance, Revitalization, and Planning General Objectives: The complex nature of modern golf course maintenance is becoming increasingly evident. Golf courses in fine condition don't happen by accident, but as the planned result of many contributing factors. It is significant that each of these factors, whose influence increases over time, must be carefully planned for, and integrated for best effect. Regardless of plans, some variables over which we have little control will exist, such as weather and soil type; however, by taking these variables into consideration in our planning, we can provide a reasonable buffer against them. A standards, or policy and procedures manual, is an ongoing site and operations analysis. It is maintained and collects existing site data and information for evaluation and is the basis for a dynamic maintenance program. The areas we evaluate in addition to playing areas are: • The natural areas and native restoration • The golf course architect, George Cobb, and Tim Cate’s design and intent • Landscape features • Erosion prevention control • Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program • Practice area • Nursery areas Other areas include: • Maintenance impacts • Maintenance programs and facilities • Alternative maintenance programs • Pesticide use and reduction • IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program and implementation Natural Areas and Native Areas: Using terms such as “native” or “natural” may mean different things to different people. Some believe it to mean “untouched” by humankind. Given the abundant introduced plants and grasses, reversion to a totally “native” surrounding is economically impracticable. Professional golf course staff uses terminology such as “natural areas” or “minimum-maintenance areas”. 44

BALD HEAD ISLAND CLUB 2018 Club Directory Perhaps a few totally-native areas can be established in the future and used for educational purposes. Our "Plan" has been formulated for all those interested in the continued high standard of maintenance for the golf course. It will serve as a guide to enlighten and inform future Club representatives, staff, and contractors, ensuring continuity of decisions and management over the years ahead. The General Objectives and Functions of the Maintenance Department are: • To maintain a well-conditioned golf course consistent with the top courses in the area and the Carolinas • To present players with pleasurable golfing conditions and environment and to positively effect both passive and active recreation • To establish continuity for our maintenance operations over the years by developing and perpetuating an overall Long-Range Plan; such a plan to be amended and approved periodically by committees and boards • To follow established channels for the chain of command with the Board of Governors having final authority. The Plan will be a recommendation on policy and direction. The superintendent shall be responsible for the development of recommendations and the carrying out of established policies. • To plan operations and schedule them with consideration to the least amount of interference to both golfer and staff within practical limitations • To plan for and make use of all available Capital funds, utilizing the depth of knowledge of Club and golf course personnel • To give players as much freedom as possible from restrictions on the use of the course, golf carts with a minimum of signs • To effect efficiency through management (labor, budget control, equipment and research) • To maintain cooperative relationships with other departments and personnel within the Club • To achieve a feeling of accomplishment, satisfaction, enjoyment, and gratitude for all personnel (players, instructors, contractors, and staff) • To cooperate with other Island associations, organizations, universities, other clubs, towards the development of greater knowledge in turf management and course maintenance relative to the environmental future of BHI • To keep our membership informed of our operations and progress, through periodic reports and the use of club publications, emails, and website • To be a good steward of the environment and Club assets

To guarantee the comfort of other diners (in regards to parties of 9 or more people when dining in the Grille), larger groups will be asked to sit at separate, adjacent tables. For parties of 16 or more, please contact our member event planner at 910.477.5010 for arrangements.

Upcoming events and our most recent menus may be viewed at bhiclub.net/events or on the member side of the website under EVENTS tab.

Our Mission The Bald Head Island Club’s Food and Beverage team is dedicated to making your club the premier dining destination on the island. We will continue to strive to provide our members, your families and guests with the highest level of personalized service. As always, we are constantly working to improve our facilities and menus so that the Club will remain a place for enjoyment and a source of pride for our members. Our staff honors the rich tradition of the Bald Head Island Club as a welcoming “home away from home” and hopes to bring our members together in a convivial spirit of community to enjoy exceptional food and drink.

Membership Charges – 15% Discount It is essential to cater to all our member’s needs. Therefore it is important to properly track items purchased by our members. To achieve this, the computer system must differentiate what is ordered by our Club membership – through member account statistics. It was thereby approved at the January 2006 Board of Governors meeting that members present their membership cards in order to receive a food discount of 15%. All charges must be made to such Club membership accounts. Discounts do not apply for alcoholic beverages, for Club member events, for Club buffets (including Sunday Brunch for example.)

Croquet No, this is not the backyard croquet you played as a child. But yes, it is great fun! The court is level, and the wickets are narrow. The mallet has a heavy head, and the one pound balls travel from one end of the court to the other with a decisive stroke. Enjoy the world-class croquet greensward at the Bald Head Island Club, whether you are a beginner or a champion player. Many Croquet Club members play a very competitive game, sporting low handicap ratings. Other members prefer a low-key approach to croquet enjoying non-tournament croquet activities such as weekly “Wednesday Wickets” and “Golf Croquet” games, and the social aspects of Croquet Club membership. All are welcome as members of the Bald Head Island Club Croquet Club. The Bald Head Island Club Croquet Club is affiliated with the United States Croquet Association and offers a structured learning program for beginners as well as ongoing scheduled play time on Wednesdays and Fridays for Croquet Club members. Additionally, all BHI Club members are invited to play Golf Croquet on Sunday mornings at 10:30am. Scramblers and tournaments are offered throughout the year to promote both casual and competitive events for Croquet Club members. Most scramblers and tournaments have an associated party at a member’s home. For more information on the Croquet Club visit: bhiclub.net/croquet.

Greensward Rules Historically, croquet has been a genteel sport, associated with Victorian England and subsequently exported to the English speaking colonies. Rules became codified and equipment standardized in the mid 1850’s. Croquet playing rules and dress codes have evolved over the years, equipment changing far faster than etiquette and practice. • BHI has a white only dress code. Consequently, even casual players are expected to adhere as closely as possible to traditional white attire. Light-colored (khaki) attire is permissible on the greensward for guests. • All players must reserve a court and play time. • All players must check in with the golf shop and pay any court fees due. • All players must be properly attired. This means white shirts (collared for men) with white Bermudas/pants and flat white/light athletic shoes. Non-white rain gear/cold weather jackets are acceptable. • All minors must be accompanied by responsible adults.

In addition, an introduction to Golf Croquet will be offered throughout the year. For those members who would like to learn the game of Six Wicket Croquet, contact the golf shop for the name of a volunteer instructor or contact Croquet Club President, John Alexander. Each year lessons are also offered by the Croquet Club Pro Jeff Soo so watch for updates on available lesson times in the quarterly newsletter, website and weekly e-news.
