EXTRAORDINARY SPACES FOR EXTRAORDINARY STORIES
A year of enchantment.
Welcome to this year’s program: replete with a definite calibre, a particular urgency, and a certain romance. 2025 is the last year of ‘regular Theatre North programming’ at the Princess and Earl, before 2026 heralds eighteen months of City of Launceston-led TLC.
Looking back, the theatre has seen a number of significant changes over its 113 years: establishment in 1911, the new foyer in 1939, commencement of live performance in 1970 and construction of the Earl Arts Centre in 1993. We are sure, guided by the vision and expertise of architects Lovell Chen, that 2026 will mark the beginning of a new vibrant, inclusive and future-focussed era in the theatre’s history.
So, for 2025, we look to create a program of our classic mix of bold mainstage projects, alongside a raft of intimate and fascinating theatre offerings.
It’s very gratifying to be able to offer up several rich theatre experiences, with works from mainland outfits Bell Shakespeare, Ensemble Theatre, Red Stitch Actors Theatre and A Slightly Isolated Dog, and a very exciting collaboration between local companies Mudlark Theatre and IO Performance
Notably, we welcome back the inestimable Sydney Dance Company with their new work momenta. Absolutely essential viewing, along with our friends at Victorian State Ballet.
Music is also front and centre. The wonderful Guy Noble kicks the year off with his wickedly insightful look at all things classical music, Van Diemen’s Band brings Sirens to the Princess and the Australian Musical Theatre Festival Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra collab is not to be missed. We were so delighted with the response to our daytime programming – the rollicking Music in the Mornings and wonderful Lunchbox Concerts - that we cannot wait for their return in 2025.
Look out for school holiday fun with Terrapin and The Listies too!
We extend our thanks to our key partners – Arts Tasmania and City of Launceston – for their work and support in making these theatres places for everyone. Likewise, Theatre North’s loyal sponsors for their valued contributions to the ongoing life of the theatre.
Live performance connects and inspires us and the act of assembly is one to be cherished. Thank you for your ongoing support: it’s more than just the ticket.

SIRENS
Mythological shapeshifters, the figure of the Siren has been omnipresent in seemingly unrelated cultures for millennia.
Appearing as half-birds, or with fish-like tails and often gender fluid, Sirens were singing enchantresses capable of luring passing sailors to their doom with the irresistible beauty of their song.
Bringing a new approach to these ancient stories, Van Diemen’s Fiddles lend their unique soundworld to an evocatively mesmerising program of new works and re-worked historical compositions based on tales from Japan, Germany, ancient Greece and current-day lutruwita / Tasmania.
Van Diemen’s Fiddles unites the exceptional talents of baroque violinist Julia Fredersdorff, klezmer / folk fiddler Rachel Meyers, experimental / folk fiddler Emily Sheppard and contemporary / Baroque violist Katie Yap.

JEKYLL & HYDE
Comedy. Thrills. Chaos. Delight.
from A Slightly Isolated Dog
Meet the most delightfully evil man alive, Mr Hyde. A man so evil he punches the cleaning lady, drop-kicks a precious puffin and yells ‘shark’ at the beach.
This mad-cap rendition of Jekyll and Hyde celebrates the darkness within us all. A completely reworked version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Edinburgh inspired novella.
Jekyll is a man who washes and separates his recycling AND puts it in the correct bin. Hyde is the man who uses the last toilet roll and never replaces it, drains the shared flat account to buy cigarettes and never calls you by your given name. Who does that?
Who is this mad man?!

THE QUEEN’S NANNY
Inspired by historical events, a royal scandal ignites a blistering fire between the steely Queen Mother and her children’s doting nanny in Melanie Tait’s sparkling new comedy-drama.
By Melanie Tait
Directed by Priscilla Jackman
Marion ‘Crawfie’ Crawford adored her job as governess to Princesses Lilibet and Margaret Rose… until she was ostracised without warning, despite dedicating the best part of her life to raising, educating and caring for the young royals. The reason? A tell-all memoir.
From the creative team behind the sell-out success of The Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race, this blackly funny play imagines a series of pivotal moments between two strong-spirited women harbouring complicated resentment.
The Queen’s Nanny was commissioned by Ensemble Theatre through its Commissioners’ Circle.

SYDNEY ARTS GUIDE
Theatre North presents Sydney Dance Company’s
momenta
The connection is instinctive. The moment is transformational.
Choreographed by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela
Sydney Dance Company explodes onto the stage in Rafael Bonachela’s momenta. From the most tender exchanges to an intense physical storm, witness an extraordinary force of movement, striking individuality and powerful unity, escalating to a joyous release.
momenta takes audiences on a journey into the poetry and physicality of human bonds. This mesmerising work presents a kaleidoscope of energy, capturing moments where individual trajectories collide and intertwine.
The dancers transcend physical limitations, exploring the full range of their bodies with grace, power and vulnerability. Each moment resonates through space, drawing the audience into a world of raw emotion.
Through the captivating interplay of Bonachela’s signature choreographic style, Nick Wales’ evocative soundscapes, Elizabeth Gadsby’s arresting set design and Damien Cooper’s striking lighting, momenta gathers the hurtling vectors of our lives into confluence and connection. For audiences and dancers alike, it is an invitation to rejoice in the beauty and fragility of our shared humanity.

By Dan Giovannoni
Feathery-tailed and frustrated, Feathers embarks on a quest for belonging that will take him to every corner of the country. Will the laid-back pink cockatoos welcome him? Or perhaps the charismatic lyrebird is his true kin?
Feathers is trailed by Duck, a scrawny, flightless youngster who he would rather be rid of. But when finding his destiny threatens Duck, Feathers must decide who his true flock is.

The fuchsia is bright MONUMENT
By Emily Sheehan. Directed by Ella Cladwell.
Edith Aldridge is the youngest woman to be elected leader of her country. In a lush presidential suite in a heritage listed hotel, she has just ninety minutes to get ready for the biggest day of her life. Enter Rosie, a twenty-two year old makeup artist from the David Jones counter, sent to help Edith get camera ready. In Rosie’s capable hands, this morning will be a breeze. So long as they both stick to the brief.
Sheehan’s astute and entertaining script challenges the trivialisation of beauty therapy, exploring the role that makeup and fashion play in how we perceive and receive women in power.

WITTENOOM
A deeply regional Australian story with an operatic heartbeat; a vivid and poetic theatre work brimming with hope, humour, and humanity.

Return to The Past: Dot and Pearl live in Wittenoom, the blue asbestos mining town in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Drawn by the promise of a new future, so begin glorious days when the Pilbara’s stunning landscapes and close-knit community shaped an idyllic lifestyle. Until it all begins to erode with the inescapable truth that their town was built on a lie.
Wittenoom is a profoundly affecting theatre work, an intimate story of life, love, and loss. Uncovering a terrifying part of our Nation’s history and the devastating human cost of corporate greed, Wittenoom is a story that demands to be told.

This raw portrayal of Romeo & Juliet will envelop you in the passion, the intensity and the heartbreak of Shakespeare’s most evocative tragedy.
Peter Evans’ critically acclaimed production of the greatest love story ever told returns to stages in 2025. Introducing the magnetic Madeline Li as Juliet, this exquisite production is not to be missed.
