The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide with its iconic score by Rodgers & Hammerstein featuring memorable songs including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,”My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi, ”Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” and the title number. This spirited, romantic, and cherished musical has earned five Tony Awards and five Oscars.

TWELVE ANGRY MEN

October 30-November 15, 2020

Rated PG13

Behind closed doors, tensions run high and a young man’s life hangs in the balance as a lone juror argues the innocence of a teenager accused of murder. As prejudices are tested and evidence weighed, the entire jury is forced to look past the show of the courtroom to unearth the shocking truth. Faced with playing the hangmen, these dozen men must rst face themselves.

This classic American drama from the 1950s could have been written yesterday with its provocative look at power, prejudice, and clashing perspectives.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Holiday Classic adapted by Julius Arthur Leonard from the novel by Charles Dickens

December 10-20, 2020

Rated G

Return to the streets of London this holiday season in the classic tale of hard-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge, visited by four ghosts: Jacob Marley and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. The spirits gradually warm old Scrooge’s heart, as well as ours.

Join us in our 14th annual production and revisit beloved characters like Fezziwig, Belle, the Cratchit family, nephew Fred, and – of course – Tiny Tim. This spirited version of A Christmas Carol puts the ghostly qualities of Charles Dickens’ classic tale center stage.

Al and Willie as the duo “Lewis and Clark” ruled the vaudeville stage as the kings of comedy and kept audiences roaring for 43 years. Now, the two old men have not spoken in more than a decade. When CBS requests them for a “History of Comedy” retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries, and laughs.

Besides remastering their sketch, the two men have numerous issues to work out before they are ready to return to the public eye. Reconciliation and friendship will contend with the power of old grudges in Neil Simon’s comic masterpiece about growing older in a world that seems to always be moving faster.

NOISES OFF

March 26 - April 11, 2021

Called “the funniest farce ever written,” Noises Off presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. This play-within-a-play captures a bitingly sarcastic and cantankerous director as he struggles to prepare his accident-prone cast for the opening night. Michael Frayn’s award-winning farce details the hilarity that ensues behind the scenes as characters attempt to untangle the chaos and salvage the play.

Brimming with slapstick comedy, Noises Off is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, missed cues, jealous lovers, falling trousers, and -- of course -- flying sardines!

WILL YOU ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE?

Season 93 includes an ambitious line up of shows. Our upcoming productions will challenge us with everything from extensive scenic and lighting designs and period costumes to iconic characters, difficult material, and huge musical numbers. Additionally, these productions promise to challenge our budget at a time when the economy and arts funding in Charlotte are already uncertain.

Why do we take on these challenges? The answer is simple. It is in our mission: to create outstanding theatre opportunities that are accessible and relevant to the people of our community. Our audiences are craving the stories we have selected to share. Our artists are passionate about these roles and productions. Our community needs access to arts opportunities to be inspired, educated, and united.

We can’t shy away from the future that this community has envisioned for Theatre Charlotte. We must stand up to the challenge.

And we must pass that challenge on to you. We cannot fund this season without your generous support. Make that first time donation. Increase your standard annual gift. Show your support all year with a monthly gift.
