ANNUAL REPORT

WHO WE ARE Theatre Works is a company and a community located in a historic Parish Hall in St. Kilda, Victoria. For 40 years, Theatre Works has been a vital national incubator of high-quality Australian theatre. An adventurous presenter, Theatre Works unearths and provides a platform for hidden voices and unheard stories from our contemporary community. As one of the few arts organisations that actively seek diverse, independent artists and nurtures creative career development, Theatre Works is an essential part of the national theatre ecology. Theatre Works remains a creative hotbed for independent artists exploring unique perspectives and creative approaches. We present performances that inspire, inform, challenge, entertain and provoke, contributing to the important, ongoing conversations that shape our society. Programming our season is the visible heartbeat of Theatre Works; by its very nature, the season gives life to our company. A season must provide balance and energy; it must be self-sustainable and self-propelling. For this reason, it should always take place in a larger and more engaged conversation within a company and community, which is what we do. The size, versatility and capacity of our venue space, combined with the unique skillset of our team to provide producing, technical, publicity and marketing support is unique compared to any other organisation in Australia. Over the last three years, we have developed new created voices and invested in building new audiences, attracting over 27,000 patrons across 60 events since 2017. Our mission was and always will be: to enable new work, foster and develop new voices, be a vital support for established voices, and welcome and engage new audiences

We want to inspire more people to discover, create and love theatre.

OUR VISION Following a rigorous investigation into our purpose and place within the theatrical landscape in 2018, Theatre Works entered 2019 with a new mission: to inspire more people to discover, create and love theatre. This vision is founded on principles of: ACCESS + EQUITY We are committed to removing the barriers to participation, inclusively engaging with new voices and new communities and ensuring equity in our work. CURIOSITY + COURAGE We value new ideas, new thinking, artistic experimentation and rigorous creative investigation. TRANSPARENCY + HONESTY We listen; we are timely in our communication, we treat people with respect, we lead open and engaged processes. SUSTAINABILITY + STEWARDSHIP We care for the future, we always actively consider our environmental impact and ensure our own future is sustainable. PASSION + PRIDE We don’t have much money and we don’t have an endless pool of resources, but we do care intensely about what we do. We will celebrate and champion everything we do. We want to be proud in our work and equally proud of our impact and in everything we achieve.

To achieve this vision in 2019, Theatre Works: • Enabled new, Australian work across a breadth of genres and styles • Fostered and developed new voices, including some scarcely represented on Australian stages • Stood as a vital support for established artists • Welcomed and engaged new audiences, expanding TW’s reach by almost 50%

Theatre Works respectfully acknowledges the Yalukit Wilam Clan of the Boon Wurrung. We pay our respect to their Elders; past, present and future. We acknowledge and uphold their continuing relationship to this land. Land on which Theatre Works has lived and worked for the last 40 years. Stolen land which was never ceded. To our First Nations artists and technicians. To our First Nations audience members. To the broader BIPOC community. We hear you and we stand with you. We acknowledge that we have not been perfect in the past. we acknowledge our hand in the systems of oppression and ongoing racism. We acknowledge that Theatre as a practice and as an institution is exclusionary.

We will get better and learn more. We will never speak for you. We will actively seek new ways to PROFILE more BIPOC artists in a culturally safe manner. We will create an environment and programs that are not only safe, but welcoming for BIPOC audience and communities. We will not just hold space but make space for you. We will make reparations.Â

2019 - Key achievements In 2019, Theatre Works saw a dramatic increase in annual attendance across the season and a growing diversification of our audience. This was in part due to a shift to a more diverse, culturally relevant program and a new approach to accessible theatre with the introduction of designated ‘Pay What You Can’ performances in each season. Through our commitment to collaboration, Theatre Works supported 352 artists, 260 volunteers in the delivery of 312 performances across 26 productions and 2 festival hubs. Our audience numbers reached a threeyear-high of 13,396, featuring a diverse range of demographics.

1. AUDIENCE GROWTH 2019 began with Theatre Works participating as a Midsumma Festival Venue Hub for the first time since 2015, seeing over 2700 patrons visit the venue for gender-diverse and queer-representing work. The rest of the year featured three works for young children and their families, with over 70 schools and 1700 students in attendance. Our mainstage productions covered a wide variety of genres and styles, reaching new audiences with every show and developing existing audiences with experimental, independent theatre that Theatre Works is known for. Introduced in August 2019, ‘Pay What You Can’ performances welcomed new audiences to Theatre Works. This accessible approach to ticketing resulted in larger audience numbers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

2019 - Key achievements 2. RELEVANCE Intrinsically linked, achievements 1 & 2 were reached through recalibrating our relevance. Coming into 2019 TW focused on stakeholder mapping & resetting organisational values. We undertook extensive community consultation, resulting in enhanced community engagement & ownership of TW direction. As a result, in 2019, we programmed exceptional works by artists rarely represented on main stages, i.e. works by marginalised groups such as women living in homelessness and the wide range of voices from the LGBTIQA+ community. Relevance to targeted community sectors was achieved through revitalised partnerships with festivals (Midsumma Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival) and individuals whose work addresses diverse viewpoints and art forms (Rawcus, wreckedALLProds, Tashmadada). Increased creative relevance resulted in growth in annual attendances. Audiences increased in 2018 as a result of our audience investment strategies and nearly doubled in 2019. Artist engagement increased from 166 in 2017 to 359 in 2018 and 352 in 2019 through diverse programming and partnerships. In 2018, a dramatic increase in programming resulted in more touch points with audiences and artists. Productions increased from 8 in 2017 to 27 in 2018 & 26 in 2019. 2019 saw presentations of works for young people and the introduction of relaxed performances and Pay What You Can sessions to welcome audience members with specific needs. The 2019 program was developed through an EOI process with the aim of building a national network of artists and stakeholders that reflects the organisation’s success in Victoria. We received 130 submissions: VIC: 113, NSW: 3, ACT: 3, SA: 2, WA: 3, QLD: 4, UK: 1, Germany: 1

3. ACCESSIBILITY In 2019, Theatre Works introduced new ‘Pay What You Can’ sessions into our programming. These select performances allowed audiences to pay what they could afford for entry upon arrival. It was an extraordinarily rewarding experience, with dozens of new audience members filling our foyer each night, finally being able to afford to see what we have to offer. The early trials of these sessions were so well-received that every show in the remainder of the 2019 program elected to dedicate at least one performance per season to the initiative. This accessible approach to ticketing was considerably beneficial towards the end of the year, with several productions focusing on and featuring women experiencing financial stress. The cast and creatives of She is Vigilante and UnHOWsed were able to invite their friends, family and fans who would ordinarily not be able to afford the entry cost to theatre performances. The success of this initiative has directly impacted our decision to adjust ticket prices in our 2020 season to deliver on our mission statement: we strive to encourage more people to discover, create and love theatre and we have found that accessible ticket prices are the gateway to wider exposure to the arts.

2019 - Key achievements 4. GREAT ART Creative investments resulted in a steady increase in the quality of the work being presented with increased recognition from our peers, the media & audiences: GREEN ROOM AWARDS 8 nominations & 2 Awards: The Market is a Wind-Up Toy She is Vigilante HELPMANN AWARD WINNER Robot Song MELBOURNE FRINGE AWARD WINNER Mad as a Cute Snake

FINANCE INCOME Earned income such as venue hire, ticket and bar sales continue to make up almost half of the organisation’s revenue, demonstrating Theatre Works’ commitment to financial sustainability in an era of funding uncertainty. Support from federal, state and local governments continues to be an integral area of funding, accounting for 40% of income. The appointment of a dedicated Development Manger to deliver the newly revamped Abundance Fundraising Gala and instigation of the Vanguard Donor Program increased Theatre Works’ fundraising campaign to 10% of the organisation’s income.

EXPENDITURE In 2019, Theatre Works continued to do a lot with very little. Payments to artists and the production of the an annual theatre season remains our single biggest cost, making up 41% of our expenditure. When it comes to supporting artists, our point of difference is our generous box-office share arrangement; artists at Theatre Works retain 60% of the income while incurring no venue-hire fees, along with the in-kind support of technical and FOH house staff.

2020 and beyond In 2020, we are continuing to expand and evolve the ways in which we support artists and engage new audiences through the following programs:

SUPPORTED WORKS

We continue our commitment to produce and present new works that are enabled and supported by TW through our Supported Works Program. This includes rehearsal time; a full performance season; share of net box office income; venue and technical equipment; front of house staff; marketing and publicity support.

COMPANY IN RESIDENCE

After a nation-wide callout for independent theatre companies and artist collectives in 2019, we are extremely excited to welcome Stage Mom, Deafferent Theatre and Iron Lung Theatre as our 2020 Companies in Residence. Each company will receive year-long development support on a new work to be considered for programming in future Theatre Works seasons. Support will include programmed play readings, rehearsal space, a full week in the theatre, company profile development and a strategic planning session led by a professional facilitator. The aim of the project is to connect companies within the industry and support the development of organisational plans.

2020 and beyond ASSOCIATE ARTISTS

In 2020, Theatre Works continues its groundbreaking Associate Artist Program dedicated to emerging artists. The program presents emerging artists from various disciplines with the opportunity to be seconded to a Theatre Works production in line with their field. Artists have the opportunity to engage in the artistic process and extend their professional networks. In 2020, we have appointed 12 associate artists. The Associate Artist Program includes: • A secondment to a 2020 show at Theatre Works • Regular Q & A sessions with established artists • Programming the TW Melbouren Fringe Hub Season (EOI/Selection) • Supporting the delivery of Queer Quickies • Forums/Round Tables • Monthly social group catch ups with shared food at Theatre Works • Access to the theatre space • Access to a hot desk in the office or foyer • Foyer meeting space access By the end of the program, the artists will have gained experience in operational theatre environments and have the support to define their practice in the future.

SHE WRITES

Theatre Works has appointed 14 resident female-identifying writers to develop their script with the possibility of realising the play on the stage in future Theatre Works programming. Our aim is to create a writers network and development program for emerging or mid-career playwrights, offering support via a hot desk at Theatre Works, programmed play readings and professional feedback throughout development. Theatre Works has partnered with the Victorian College of the Arts for this project, pairing a resident writer with a VCA dramaturgy student to work together on a new piece of writing. VCA has had a long and rich relationship with Theatre Works over the years, creating pathways for emerging professionals during and following graduation from vocational training in acting, directing, dramaturgy, design and production. She Writes offers an invaluable opportunity for our resident writers and VCA dramaturgy students to actively collaborate with the industry in developing a new generation of dynamic new performance works.

OUR SUPPORTERS VANGUARD DONORS

Members of the Vanguard Donor Program are courageous, forward thinking people with a passion for new work and creative risk taking. This dynamic group underpins the activity of Theatre Works and are an intrinsic part of the Theatre Works community. Their regular support allows us to sustainably provide a platform for hidden voices and silent stories from within our contemporary community, supporting artists that would not normally be seen on our stages. With an annual contribution of $100 or more, Vanguard Donors are a community of influential and adventurous supporters, championing bold programming and opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to access the arts. Vanguard Members enjoy a personal relationship with Theatre Works and intimate access to our creative development through exclusive events and regular communication. Theatre Works has ambitious plans for the future. We welcome your support.

It encourages you to take exciting creative risks.” Bridget Balodis , Producer - She is Vigilante (2019) “Being a TW Artistic Associate was an incredible opportunity to work with a real leader in our industry (Tanya Gerstle / OpticNerve ). A glowing recommendation from Tanya subsequently led me to currently working at Malthouse Theatre.” Julian Dibley - Hall, Artistic Assoc Program 2018, Dir. The View From Up Here TW Program 2020 “We share so many values: support for emerging artists; contrasting diverse voices; for great surprising art and for community… TW gives artists like ours the opportunity to be seen by a broader audience. It’s a wonderful space to perform and direct in. I’m really inspired by its heritage and history.” Yvonne Virsik (Artistic Director, Monash University Student Theatre) Slaughterhouse Five, 2019 “Being an Artistic Associate at TW was an incredible experience for me, both artistically and as a platform for my career.” Romi Kupfer, Artistic Assoc Program 2018 , Dir.
