he anniversary of September 11th is a sad and thoughtful day for people to reflect on the horrific terror attacks on the World Trade Centre. It was 15 years ago in 2001 that life changed drastically for the world and not just
the United States; security heightened, freedom was compromised and there was a general feeling of anxiety and uneasiness. This particularly affected South Asian and Arab communities who were lumped into the same basket as the World Trade Centre
hijackers. As the hijackers were of Arab and Islamic descent, any minorities seen to share their characteristics in terms of appearance, faith and demeanour were subject to discrimination, hate crimes and alienation. The Sikh community in particular felt the brunt
of bigotry simply for being mistaken as Muslims due to their Turbans, beards and sometimes South Asian heritage. The first revenge killing in the United States after 9/11 happened to a Sikh, Balbir Singh Sodhi was shot dead at a petrol station by a man who wanted to Continued on Page 2
