As part of our celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the opening of Gold Coast City Gallery, we invited 25 members of the community to select their favourite work from the huge collection of over 3000 artworks that are tucked away in storage. Their choices reveal some surprising insights and the exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the value and meaning of the collection for the city as a whole.

Wiyung tchellungnai-najil (Keeper of the light) 1997 helidon sandstone Commissioned with funds donated by Mr Pat Corrigan AM and Gold Coast City Council, Division 7, 1997 On display: reproduction photograph. Reproduced courtesy the artist

This sculpture is located on the Sculpture Walk, adjacent to the Gallery on the far side of Evandale Lake.

Selected By Margaret McColl “There is no doubt that these works looked interesting when they were initially installed in 1997, but these days, framing the magnificent Q1, they just come to life. Ancient and modern, side by side, these monoliths connect the architecturally flamboyant, sleek architectural sky scraper with a part of the Gold Coasts fascinating history. The name means “Keeper of the Light”. The Gold Coast City Gallery is the beacon of light for the arts in this area- I just love my city”. Margaret McColl, 2012

Margaret McColl has been a proud volunteer at Gold Coast City Gallery for 15 years. During this time, Margaret has played a major role in the success of the Gallery and has met some wonderful people. During the week, Margaret works at John Flynn Hospital before enjoying some time in the peaceful and happy environment of the gallery.

Song for survival 1989 oil on cast bronze Winner, 1989 Gold Coast Sculpture Award. Acquired 1989 Reproduced courtesy the artist

Selected by Fran Cummings “There are so many works in the Collection which I could nominate as a favourite. There is a quiet compelling beauty about this small bronze sculpture which attracts me to it. The subtle colours and sensitive modelling of the Master and dog are a tactile presence of elusive symbolism. Inspired by Italian sculpture, a dog awaits the sounds of history –musical greatness recorded but mute without technology (a reference to the famous His Masters Voice record label). But there is so much more –meaning, mystery, reflection: an exquisite poignancy in its being. The image lingers long in memory”. Fran Cummings, 2012

Fran Cummings undertook further study for a BA Art History at Queensland University in the 1970s, which led to research work at the Queensland University Art Museum and guiding at the Queensland Art Gallery and in the early eighties Arts Writer for Gold Coast Bulletin. Fran was the Inaugural Director of the Gold Coast City Art Gallery, taking up the challenge in August 1986 before relocating to Malaysia in 1995, where she managed an International Artist Residency. Fran is now Director Pandanus Art Services, art consultant and Federal Government approved valuer under the Cultural Gifts Program.

It’s hard to capture that bustling, vibrant and buzzing energy of a big city in a photograph, but the colour and shapes in this picture really capture that energy. The big city lights lured me in”. Where waves ‘mongst rocks and quicksand roar (Point Danger) 1894 oil on canvas Purchased 2002

Selected by Brett Walker “This painting brings back memories of Point Danger, a spot that I visit often. It’s a dramatic place to experience the force and power of the ocean, with waves exploding over the rocks. Captain Cook named this area as a warning to ships about a reef close by. It is also the first location in Queensland that Cook named on his journey along the East Coast, which makes the location very significant”. Brett Walker, 2012

Selected by Trish Wimberley “I like black and white photography, but I was drawn to this photo because it reminds me of my maternal family. I was delivered by my grandmother at home in 1949, the same year that this photograph was captured. The women’s faces are testament to the hardships faced during the era. The dirty and overused walls and materials also tell a story when contrasted with the newly crocheted rug for the new baby. This work is private and moving”. Trish Wimberley, 2012

Yet when we look at what we have achieved so far, nothing is impossible. Human will is an amazing thing. The tonal shadows and balance of the photo also make it a stand out work for me”. Main Beach sand mining 1956 pencil, charcoal, wash on paper Acquired 1979. Purchased with funds provided by Gold Coast City Council. Reproduced courtesy the estate of the artist

Selected by Bruce Paige “I wanted to select a work that was about the Gold Coast and this watercolour by the much loved Australian artist Margaret Olley, who is better known for floral still lives and interiors shows machinery used for extracting minerals from sand. It’s something that we might not realise now that much of the Gold Coast beaches from Main Beach, Broadbeach and Currumbin were mined and so I think this work reflects also the resilience of the environment to return to the beautiful state that we know today”. Bruce Paige, 2012

Bruce Paige is a highly-regarded television presenter. He joined Channel Nine Queensland in 1985 and spent 19 years presenting Nine News Brisbane. In 2009 he stepped down from the news desk but returned to Channel Nine in 2009 and is currently presenting the weekday Gold Coast News.

Sisters Rocks 2008 pigment print Winner, 2009 Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award Reproduced courtesy the artist

Selected by Dr Deborah Bailey “This work does what art should do – challenge perceptions on what form art can take and freshen perspective by slightly changing the viewing point. I enjoy the presentation of children who accept what is old in the world as new and who own the future, with the juxtaposition of the age of the landscape against the art expression that is graffiti. The playfulness, the potential and the solemnity of childhood that I know so well from my work all have echoes in this composition. No wonder it is one of my favourites in the Gold Coast Collection”. Dr Deborah Bailey, 2012

Dr Deborah Bailey graduated from the University of Queensland. She studied surgery in Brisbane, Melbourne and England. She is currently the only Paediatric Surgeon living on the Gold Coast, providing general surgical and paediatric urological services for children between Brisbane and Coffs Harbour. Through engaging with this model there is then the opportunity for the viewer to have another experience. Like a work of fiction it functions as an invitation to create a new possibility in the mind of the viewer”. Dr Donal Fitzpatrick, 2012

Julie RRAP b. 1950

Australia/NSW

Outerspace # 10 2010 digital print Acquired from the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, 2011 © Julie Rrap/Licensed by Viscopy, 2012

Selected by Ben Veitch “I was drawn to Julie Rrap’s work because of its physical nature. I see a clash of two types of emotions here. From afar I can really feel a sense of depth and height which can give you the feeling of excitement and risk. And when looking closer (especially at her grip) I found her body language to be very calm. I found it easy to place myself in the image. The choice to not show her face probably had something to do with that. I appreciate how difficult it would have been to execute. In summary, this work could be a metaphor of my life: Organised Chaos”. Ben Veitch, 2012

Ben Veitch from Zealous Choreography was the inaugural Artist in Residence based at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. The culmination of this collaboration resulted in the creation of Blood, Sweat and Dance. In 2009 Ben won the hearts of Australians as a top 4 finalist on So You Think You Can Dance. I have a love-hate relationship with phones; after university I was between jobs and so worked as a telemarketer. The phone is also a big part of my work now. There used to be an anticipation and excitement about a phone call – the possibility that the boy you liked was calling your house - but sadly that is a thing of the past thanks to Caller ID and smartphones”. Nicole Dyer, 2012

Night’s paw 1990 oil on canvas Judges selection, 1991 Gold Coast City Conrad Jupiters Art Prize. Purchased with the assistance of Hotel Conrad and Jupiters Casino © Ruth Waller/Licensed by Viscopy, 2012

Selected by Michael Zavros “I first encountered this work when I became a volunteer at Gold Coast City Gallery helping to install exhibitions in 1992. The work is playful: it’s a big ‘dark as night’ painting of a great beastly claw about to strike, yet the delicious swirling impasto painting is full of colours and the simple child-like shape of the claw is reminiscent of a Grimm’s fairy tale or Where The Wild Things Are. At 18 and having just finished high school I found the work ominous, transporting and just weird. I loved it”. Michael Zavros, 2012

Michael Zavros is a realist painter, drawer, sculptor and film-maker and has taken part in numerous group and solo exhibitions at institutions such as MCA Sydney, IMA Brisbane, AGNSW and QAG/GOMA, ViaFarini, Milan, Artspace Auckland and Govett Brewster Gallery, New Plymouth. Anne Zahalka’s photograph depicts the beach loving, bronzed Aussie and his patient, passionate and perhaps obsessive lust for competitive beach sport. I feel I belong amongst the throng here waiting for “The Next Wave””. David Chester, 2012
