Unique Fold Forming Techniques for Jewelry Nick Barnes Using traditional and non-traditional hand and hammer form raising techniques, students explore using fold forming in unique ways. Using pre-shaped blanks to aid in the emphasis of design through play, students are introduced to the basic techniques developed by Charles Lewton Brain and his students, and use these methods as a springboard to explore different avenues in their own pieces. A material list is available, and an optional tool kit may be purchased from the instructor.

Saul Bell Award winning artists, Abby Goldblatt and Nick Barnes, team up again for this three-day course. Through extensive demonstrations and play periods, students explore the exhaustive shapes and colors that these two techniques can bring to form building for small-scale jewelry or larger sculptural pieces. Using samples as inspiration combined with an emphasis on playfulness, students are guided in the design development of their own unique pieces. Through the process of enameling, color may be draped over forms to enhance and tease the viewer, or to add the surprise of an additional element. Tuition includes the use of enamels. An optional tool kit is available for purchase from the instructors. $275 March 28–30, 2014

Powder Coating Ashley Buchanan

Students explore the endless possibilities of using wool to make necklaces, rings, pendants, earrings, and other jewelry. Materials are included in the tuition.

Students learn the basics of powder coating, a surface technique that can create a colorful, clean, durable finish on jewelry and small metal objects. This process is traditionally used on an industrial scale to coat and color large metal objects, but converts perfectly for jewelers and metalsmiths to utilize in their own studios. Participants are encouraged to experiment with various application processes while making small metal sample sets and coating items of their own personal work. Powder coating materials are included in the tuition. Students provide the metal and their own objects.

Metal Clay and Enameling Paula Coupe & Abby Goldblatt This workshop introduces the expanded possibilities of metal clay when paired with enameling. The first day students create jewelry pieces from metal clay. Basic techniques for working with the clay are covered along with design considerations for future enameling. On day two basic procedures are demonstrated and students enamel their own work. Clay and a $15 clay tool kit are available for purchase. A $20 materials fee paid to the enameling instructor covers all other supplies. $185 February 22 & 23, 2014

Blacksmithing for Silversmiths Michael Brehl Learn to make your own tools. Mushroom, blowhorn, anticlastic, and raising stakes can be made, as well as chasing tools and a stonesetting jig. If participants complete one blowhorn stake and one mushroom stake the cost of the class is far less than the retail cost of those two stakes. Cutting, forming, welding, grinding, sanding, and polishing techniques are demonstrated. Prior jewelry or silversmithing experience is required. Welders, grinders, and other large power tools are used. This workshop is physically demanding and also requires reasonably good eyesight and depth perception. A materials fee is payable to the instructor (approximately $70) but varies depending on the material used. Registered students should contact the instructor at least one week prior to class to discuss individual material needs.
