The Art League

“By nurturing the artist, we enrich the community.”

The Art League develops the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community.

The Art League is a multifaceted, 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts organization. Since our founding in 1954, The Art League has used the visual arts to bring together people from a wide variety of talents, experiences, and communities.

Through this work, we have become the largest visual arts organization of our kind in Virginia. Every year, we fill more than 10,000 class seats, offer exhibit opportunities for nearly 1,000 artists, and connect with a broad audience through a diverse range of artistic programming.

Membership

To enhance The Art League member experience and to honor all those with a significant committment to our League community, Art League Membership is now a benefit that comes with engaging in one, or all, of the following ways:

1. Paying the exhibiting artist dues in the gallery (Active Exhibiting Artist Member)

2. Donating to our Annual Fund $125 or above (Active Donor Member)

3. Enrolling in at least one course in the last five academic terms AND taking 12 or more courses in the past four years at the School (Active Student Member)

If you meet any of the above criteria, congratulations! You are an Art League member! If you have questions about membership, please feel free to contact Haven Ashley havena@theartleague. org or 703-683-1780.

Support Opportunities

While The Art League generates a significant portion of our operating funds from programming, donors drive our outreach, accessibility, and future sustainability. There are myriad ways to become a supporter of The Art League: such as the Annual Fund with a one-time gift or pledge, or by joining the Seurat Society as a monthly giver. Transparent watercolor is ideally suited to represent water. A broad wash creates the underpainting on which the ripples and waves are painted to create motion and interest. The surface of the water is often also a mirror, reflecting objects adjacent to the body of water. The moving water in streams and rivers creates whitewater that can be rendered using the white of the paper. This workshop explores water in its many manifestations.

Opaque Watercolor and Gouache (Online)

Peter Ulrich

The “Magic of Watercolor” is based on its transparency. A wash of watercolor sparkles because the white paper shows through the thin coating of pigment left behind when the water evaporates. One way to get effective opaque areas is to employ a kind of watercolor called gouache. This workshop studies the use of opaque pigments. Held via Zoom.

The Portrait in Clay: Structure and Expression

Rick Weaver

Through demos and individual critiques, students learn the rudiments of creating a life size, ready-to-fire clay bust from life. Begin with armature building and clay application techniques and continue through principles of measuring, structure anatomy, composition, expression and surface finish. Students learn the ideas central to making compelling and structurally sound portrait sculpture. Tuition includes two bags of clay. Model and firing fees and extra.

Sculpt the Portrait/Draw the Portrait: Planes of the Head

Dan Thompson

This multidisciplinary workshop focuses on the ability to interpret form. All skill levels are welcome, but material preparation is required. Students model life-sized portraiture, in the round, centered on major planar surfaces. Students bring this tactile learning into a long posed, graphite portrait, which is drawn from the same model. Students learn the importance of correlating tonality in pencil with planar form. Participants transform their aptitude of landmark facial structures, from live sittings. Model fees extra. Spots are limited.

Support The Art League!

The Art League is where people come to find themselves—and find themselves creating a place like no other.

They come into the studio and take the studio into the community, providing a canvas for exploring new possibilities, experiencing the power of creativity and crafting a better life for all in Alexandria.

The Art League develops the artist within each of us through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment while sharing the experience of visual arts with the community.

You may come to The Art League to learn to paint, sketch, or throw clay on the wheel. But you’ll leave with so much more. Our missionbased pricing allows local art lovers of all experience levels and backgrounds to meet, grow, and learn from one another. Showing up for classes at The Art League is art in action.

Please consider that this priceless form of connection and community has costs. Every year, The Art League relies on charitable donations from people like you to pay for electricity, equipment, facilities, and school personnel. Although these may seem mundane, they are the unseen backbone of the organization. If they are not funded, we would not be able to offer this fantastic array of art courses and experiences. Tuition only covers some of the expenses associated with running the most extensive art school of its kind in the DMV.

If you love The Art League and all it stands for–creativity, community, and connection–please make a tax-free donation to The Art League today. It’s simple: You can check the box on your class registration form to add a donation, send your check with the form on the right, or scan the QR code below.

You help us sustain:

“By nurturing the artist, we enrich the community.”

The Art League develops the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community.

You help us inspire:

“I can go to art classes! I’d like to thank you very, very much for my happiness!”—Charlie, an adult living with a disability, Art League scholarship recipient

“I want to thank you again for the scholarship. It means a lot to have this opportunity, I appreciate everything it has done for me.” —Jimmy, youth scholarship recipient

“My daughter took several summer art classes at the Madison Annex as a teen. She is now in college studying gaming and interactive design and recently won the Communications Dept “Best Art for Tabletop Game” award. Thank you Art League!“

“The Art League is the reason I became both an artist and an art educator. I took my first class as a teen, and went on to pursue a degree in painting due to the mentorship of my teacher there. Working as an Art Camp intern, ignited my passion for art education, and encouraged me to pursue an MAT in Art Education. I returned to Alexandria and became a licensed K-5 art educator with ACPS, where I continue to teach to this day.”

We extend our thanks to you—our many students, artists, friends, neighbors, and institutions—whose donations have supported all of us at The Art League.

We believe that people like you will make it possible for The Art League to continue our commitment to artistic inclusion and creative excellence.

During this exciting year of changes at the Art League, we hope that you consider making a further investment in the League by including us in your giving plans. Donations are gratefully accepted at www. theartleague.org/donations or by Heather Gleason in the Development Office: 703-519-1741.
