ello Gorgeous,

this is Maja’s rst letter of the editor and Cordelia’s last. A joint venture if you will. While we have the most professional set-up to deal with this—our founder Cordelia’s new venture The Grief Friends— good-byes are always bittersweet.

After four years of collaboration, admiration and honest partnership, this was the logical next move as The Grief Friends is slowly growing and TheArtGorgeous—Cordelia’s rst creation—needed to be passed along to free her headspace. In this next chapter, Cordelia is staying on as CVO and Maja is taking over as CEO. Not to worry, we talk all the time, and so this 11th issue of the globally beloved magazine was created by us together with some amazing contributors. We are delighted to present TheArtGorgeous in its original print form.

EDITOR’S LETTER

While the Top 200 List is something we have done in the past, this edition has a few twists.

As usual, it is not strictly focused on ne art, but also includes names from commercial art, fashion, the creative industries, anyone we can imagine could inspire you. However, we did away with the numbers. This was never meant as a ranking, and we decided number 17 is in no way more important than say 178.

We also included eco and equality warriors, as we call them, still from the realm of creativity but with an extra focus within their practice on doing a little better for the planet and humanity at large, as we think this is very important. We are sure you do, too.

In addition, and as always, this list features all kinds of creatives as well as their “enablers:” Those who make up the infrastructure of the art ecosystem, the people behind museums, collections, magazines, and so on. Take this list as inspiration, look these folks up, and see what their stories can do to enrich yours.

We are of course very thankful to the incredible Cindy Sherman for contributing the stickers for this edition and to Margherita Missoni Maccapani Amos for gracing our cover.

If you happen to be on this list: Congrats, we like your vibe. If you are not amongst the chosen, fret not. This only means we don’t know you yet and how awesome you are. Your time to shine will come, trust us

You are all wonderful!

Love

Dearest Reader,

imagine you are entering the fantastical, flourishing gardens of a villa with water elements and lush plants. There is the music of your choice playing, and the food and drinks options are all your favourites.

Welcome to the imaginary TheArtGorgeous Garden Party. Our Top 200 is less of a “these-200-people-matterand-everyone-else-does-not” compilation and more of our dream guest list for this afternoon, with you as the surprise addition. So, grab a champagne, lemonade, tea, whatever your vibe is, and go mingle.

Everyone at this party is someone we at TheArtGorgeous either know and love, admire from afar, or have recently discovered and found exciting. Newly Discovered, by the way, does not mean they started doing what they do recently; it just means we became aware of it only now. There are some amazing poets, curators and artists to watch out there, and now you know them, too.

The Think Tank section covers entrepreneurs, patrons, curators and more that, as thought leaders, shape the creative industries’ tomorrow.

In the section titled Eco and Equality Warriors, we spotlight those of the creative realm who put their energy towards making our world a better place.

Digital Pioneers that work with AI, use algorithms and incorporate gaming into their creative output make up

another exciting chapter.

Then there are the Power Duos: siblings, lovers, friends who thought, “Why go at it alone when you can do it as a team?”

The En Vogue section brings you the latest in fashion since TheArtGorgeous knows all forms of creative expression to be equally important.

Celebrities also join the party because it is always fun to see what those fancy people are up to.

Then we have The Street Crew with their collectors, designers and artists as well as the Guardians of the Art Canon, because what would this industry be without those that make it accessible and the patrons who champion creation from its first spark?

And we of course have the Heavyweights, those that stand as examples at the top of the art world. This section, to name one, includes Cindy Sherman who kindly also contributed the much sought-after stickers to this edition. In short: Step into the party, find inspiration and, first and foremost, have fun!

Cheers!

MARGHERITA MISSONI MACCAPANI AMOS

“NEVER FORGET IT’S JUST FASHION AT THE END OF THE DAY”

MMMA talks to us about her latest venture

“Maccapani,” her art, her thoughts on social media and what superpower she would choose.

Interview with Margherita Missoni Maccappani Amos

33
In ve years I hope I won’t be acting as chau eur for my children anymore and I really do hope that I will have a structured team at Maccapani with a dedicated sales, merchandising and retail department.
35
MACCAPANI, SERE JUMPSUIT

Congrats on Maccapani! Wanna share some thoughts on how this label came about a er your departure from Missoni in 2021?

Maccapani came right after the pandemic; after Covid, nobody wanted to give up comfort. I started to think about how to retain it in a functional attractive aesthetic that could follow modern life, and that unlike a lot of contemporary casual clothing that is derived from menswear, could be rooted in a fundamentally female point of view. ere seemed to be a new space in the market for an alternative to streetwear or athleisure that starts from women and a feminine mindset. Maccapani is very much built around the shape of a woman and fully developed in jersey, just not a sweatshirt jersey. It’s much richer, textured, and elegant.

What are the three things you never leave the house without (apart from phone, wallet, keys, etc.)?

The vintage merchandise bag from my grandfather’s old travel agency that inspired the name of the brand (Maccapani), my sunglasses and of course my Oura Ring that helps me monitor sleep, exercise, heart rate and blood oxygen levels at night.

Who do you have in mind when creating Maccapani designs?

Maccapani, for me, is a model of uniqueness that transcends rules, codes, and canons, and our clothes are connected to the liberation of the woman’s body. As the years went by, I started noticing that when taking on new roles—as a mother, as a grown woman—people expected me to dress ‘modestly’ to avoid a reaction. With Maccapani, I want women to feel comfortable and confident dressing at any age; women should be able to showcase their bodies because they are happy and not out of fear of a reaction or to create a response.

Maccapani was designed and created with the women in my life in mind, how they live and how they dress. Women who need a functional wardrobe that can cover the various activities of the day that each of us has to face, from work to family commitments to the private sphere.

Whats the best advice your famous Nonna Rosita has ever given you?

“Never forget that it’s just fashion at the end of the day.” Of course, this world makes you dream and have fun, but we are not saving the world; we only make clothes. is is part of my family philosophy.

You share a very real/ personal version of “you” on your insta. What are your thoughts on lters, manipulation and curation on social media? Social manipulation can be culturally very harmful, although I live some of it as a performance, a form of escapism.

Assuming even Margherita Missoni Maccapani Amos sometimes has a shitty day of self-doubt and misery, what do you do to cheer yourself back up and put yourself back in I-can-do-it-all mode? Meditate, meditate and meditate.

Fast forward ve years. What do you hope you still do/no longer do?

In five years I hope I won’t be acting as chauffeur for my children anymore and I really do hope that I will have a structured team at Maccapani with a dedicated sales, merchandising and retail department.

If you had a superpower, which one would it be and why? De nitely be in multiple places at the same time.

Favourite art work you own? And favourite artists or artwork you wished you owned? (Maybe they are reading this ;)

My favourite art piece in my house is Set Piece by Caroline Walker. Also, right now I’m very attracted to Skuja Braden’s work, an artist duo based between Latvia and California represented by Kaufmann Repetto Gallery with whom Maccapani had the honour of collaborating with on the occasion of the last pop up at Webster in Miami. eir works are all related thematically and conceptually, exploring how the private and the public are intertwined.

What are you really excited for in 2024? Moving house.

CINDY SHERMAN

Cindy Sherman, the artist who helped make photography a fine art, maintains her unique touch through both humour and criticism in her photography, questioning the influence of mass media on our individual and collective identities.

Starting as a realist painter in art school, Sherman shifted to photography in the mid 70s to explore common role models and personas. Turning the camera on herself, she navigates identity as mass deception through performative behaviours, unravelling the roleplaying in Hollywood fantasies, fashion, advertising,

popular culture and desire alongside the inherent grotesqueness found within these industries. Mostly working in series, since the early 2000s Sherman began shooting digitally, subtly manipulating the images to play upon society’s fractured sense of self in the 21st century and, more recently, collaging photographs to create entirely new characters. Distorting the visual and cultural codes of art, Sherman has also experimented with AI-generated images, presenting them as “studies” on Instagram. Her art stands as a hallmark of the explosion of images at the end of the 20th century.

This issue comes with stickers by the one and only Cindy Sherman. If the stickers are already gone, write us at thegirls@theartgorgeous.com
