he Arc of Baltimore provides supports for nearly 70 people who are 65 years of age and older. In August, many of them attended a luncheon held in their honor as part of our 60th anniversary celebration. At 89 years young, Evelyn Peters, pictured above, was the oldest attendee.

Each person received a certificate recognizing their longevity and enjoyed a great meal, music from their era and some sing-a-long fun. Awards were presented for artistry, recycling, musicianship and even “partying.”

A Family Support-sponsored summer picnic also was a huge success. Ditto for Bay Buddies, now in its ninth season, which gave 100 children opportunities to sail, swim, visit the Science Center and have tons of fun at Living Classrooms.

The Arc’s staff and leaders are proud to provide programs and services for people of all ages! ■

Backyard Fest was a Rousing Success

M

any of the estimated 550 guests who attended The Arc’s Backyard Fest on September 10th are hoping for a repeat next year.

The perfect evening featured music by Smooth Kentucky, a money wheel, raffles and a terrific entertainment area for kids, complete with moonbounces, face painting, games and giveaways. The presentation of staff and community partner awards (see article on following page) was another Backyard Fest highlight.

Arc centers sold jewelry and homemade gift tags made from donated greeting cards. Danny Rosner sold snacks from his vending company.

The event, one of The Arc’s 60th anniversary celebrations, attracted a great mix of people from local neighborhoods, Arc-supported families and adults, staff, volunteers and fans of the band. Guests even had fun on the shuttle that transported them between the church parking lot and the Backyard Fest.

CONGRATS TO THE ARC’S 2010

Award Winners LAWRENCE JENKINS received the Excellence in Direct Support Award for his work in one of the houses where The Arc supports three individuals.

Lawrence has a gift for bringing out the best in people. His patience and support enabled him to help one gentleman overcome his shyness and help another improve his overall health and fitness.

JERRY BULLINGER was honored with The Excellence in Management Award, named in memory of Herb Fedder, executive director of The Arc from 1967-1984. When he began in 1985, Jerry was in charge of the sheltered workshop, where 150 people did contract work, and the landscape and janitorial programs, which employed a total of about 70 people. Thanks to Jerry, big changes have occurred. The segregated workshop is closed and the people who worked there have jobs in the community. Over 100 people work directly for companies in individual jobs across Baltimore. Another 175 work on crews in all types of businesses, and the landscape and janitorial departments each employ more than 100 people.

MARGIE DELONG, who supports two women in their home, won the Selma Greenfeld Community Connection Award for fostering opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to make friends and build relationships in the community. With Margie’s help, the enthusiastic young women participate in community theater and volunteer at their church, the Maryland School for the Blind and the YMCA. They go to Orioles’ spring training in Florida as well as to Ocean City, MD. The roommates love bull roasts, barbecues, bowling, bingo…the list goes on.

Margie also showed one of the women how to use Facebook to keep in touch with friends across the country.

EPHRAM TILDA won the Direct Support Employee award for his work as a mentor and co-resident for a man supported by the agency’s community living division. Ephram’s gentle, respectful and positive manner helped the gentleman improve his health and nutrition as well as his work attendance—and, by extension—his paycheck. Ephrem works hard to enhance his own job skills.

His deeply felt commitment to those The Arc supports exemplifies the agency’s mission.

KIM BECKER, who started her career at The Arc of Baltimore in 1987, was named Administrative Employee of the Year. As the office operations administrator, Kim tends to the safety and security of our building and our telecommunications; she serves as our webmaster and social networking point person, too. Kim helps out with special events and is an invaluable resource for anyone in need of information about the agency and its history.

Members of the Helping Hands selfadvocacy group presented the group’s award to CYNTHIA WOODARD. Cynthia came to The Arc when she left Rosewood many years ago. She has a job at Fort Meade, is married and is very active with the Helping Hands.

She cooks for the group, keeps members focused on goals and advises her peers—all with a ready smile. Cynthia goes above and beyond to ensure the independence and success of Helping Hands members.

DANIELLE FORD won the Volunteer of the Year Award for her dedication to The Arc and Arc-supported people.

During the past two years, she has visited Will Manokey and Leroy Miller weekly in their home. Danielle brings her Wii, and the three friends have a great time bowling together. She has truly become an important part of Will and Leroy’s lives. Recently, Danielle joined The Arc of Baltimore Board of Directors.

The Arc also presented two Special Appreciation Awards. The first goes to COLD STONE CREAMERY in Canton, owned by David and Rachel Shar. For the past two years, the couple has staged a “Battle of the Stones.” Their ice cream servers form two teams, one representing The Arc of Baltimore, the other representing Health Care for the Homeless. (Pictured here are Shemera Hall and Emmanuel Welsh, members of The Arc’s team.) From 11 a.m. until 11 p.m., the two teams encourage customers to leave tips for their charity. While serving ice cream, they sing, dance, cheer and chant, raising hundreds of dollars in the process.

Professional photographer HOWARD KORN also won a Special Appreciation Award. Howard has taken pictures at Arc events for several years and has photographed many Arc-supported workers at their job sites. In 2009, Howard volunteered to take additional photographs and, over a period of several months, visited more than 20 sites to capture images of the people of The Arc. From hundreds of photos, Howard chose 25 stunning images for an exhibit entitled “Faces of the Arc” that was shown at last year’s Art in the Round. ■

Lauren and the R word My sister Lauren may be as tall as one-fourth of Shaq, but damn can the girl shoot a three-pointer.

Every Wednesday night at the Y, she plays like a 24-year-old kid.

She smiles, panting rosy baby-cheeks, dodges unseen opponents, fakes left, dribbles right until at the last second she lines up the shot, hops a little hop in stubby worn Nikes and gives the ball up to heaven.

When Lauren was born, God loved her so much that he gave her the gift of one more chromosome so she could have more of herself to share.

So great was this gift that Mom wept holding her baby in her hospital blankets, white with wondering How can we make room,

she is so much, how can we make room?

So quietly, Dad kissed both their brows, prayed, put on his penny-loafers and built a house to house her gift.

Soon it ballooned from a junkpile sanctuary to a three-bed two-bath cathedral in the Bel Air suburbs.

But her gift transcended these hallowed walls, poured out the windows into the school bus (the long one) where the teachers and those other kids learned to love her the way God did.

We loved her, too, Me and Megan, when we came along in three and four years.

Soon we bore witness to her gift, that somewhere in her sunny almond eyes and her wild brook laugh

there was something, some word that some kids said in place of stupid, in place of weird, in place of I can’t think of nice things to say about anyone or anything.

Mom and Dad told us never to name it.

This was a swear so sacred to know, so profrane to utter that we crammed it in a cardboard box, tied it in cellotape chains, and scrambled to find a place to hide it.

But Lauren knows it, too.

She just doesn’t let it bother her.

She shoots baskets every Wednesday night.

A damn fine player, her.

Meet the New Members of The Arc’s Board T he Arc of Baltimore’s leadership is delighted to welcome five new talented individuals to its board of directors. ince 2006, Danielle Ford has been employed by McCormick & Company, Inc. as an instructional designer, focusing on emerging technologies to support the development of employees around the world.

Previously, Danielle worked as a special educator in Virginia and Maryland. She serves on the strategic steering committee for the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education.

Danielle was recently named “Volunteer of the Year” by The Arc of Baltimore because of the friendship she has developed during weekly visits with two men who receive residential supports from the agency. Danielle is a role model for working with communities to create awareness that people with developmental disabilities need more opportunities for inclusion.

ivian Banks worked for The Arc of Frederick County, where she rose through the ranks to become service coordination director and had the opportunity to work closely with stakeholders in the developmental disabilities community.

From 1996 to 2000, she served as a member of the original Ask Me Project Advisory committee.

Prior to moving to Baltimore, Vivian worked for the department of social services in New York City and upstate New York.

Vivian served on the Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities for three years. She completed two five-year terms with the Baltimore County Public Library Board of Trustees in 2009 and volunteers once a week at the Perry Hall library.

For a number of years, Liz, her husband and four children lived in Connecticut, where Liz worked in a group home for people with developmental disabilities. When she and her family moved to Cleveland, Liz became a therapist for children with autism and worked in the Cleveland Clinic’s outreach program.

Notre Dame College School of Pharmacy Partners with The Arc of Baltimore en interns from the College of Notre Dame pharmacy program are volunteering with The Arc of Baltimore as they work toward their doctorate degree in pharmacology. So far, the students have provided childcare for the family support series, produced a health fair for the Loch Ridge Center and assisted with Towson’s Community Employment Connection.
