theAdvocate Athletes Sought for Fields of Dreams he Arc of Baltimore has Olympicsized hopes for several upcoming warm-weather Special Olympics events. According to Joseph Anastasio, assistant executive director for family and children services, the agency wants to field a minimum of 150 athletes: at least 20 from each of The Arc’s five day centers and at least 50 more from the employment services and community living departments.

Some of the athletes will have a chance to participate in the annual Baltimore City Games, slated for May 3rd and 5th on the Homewood campus of The Johns Hopkins University—and in the annual statewide games, slated for June 17th-19th at Towson University.

Track athletes can do a 50-meter walk, a 100-meter walk, a 50-meter dash/sprint and/or a 100-meter dash/sprint. Field events include the softball throw, standing long jump and shot put. In addition to track and field, the State games will include aquatics/swimming, softball and bocce.

Annual Golf Tournament to Offer Twice the Fun

The Arc of Baltimore’s Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday, May 4 in the Chesapeake Room of the University Union Building at Towson University.

18, 2005 at the American Visionary Art Museum.

by September 2 to be considered for the event. Artists whose work is accepted into the show will receive 60% of the purchase price for each piece they sell.

During August, The Arc of Baltimore’s day centers will host a series of exhibits to display the submissions.

Artists are also invited to enter The Arc of Baltimore’s Second Annual Holiday Card Contest. The winning art will be featured on the agency’s 2005 Holiday Card, along with a profile of the artist. Judges also will award honorable mentions for three works of art that will be used in the agency’s holiday card fundraiser. All sizes and media will be accepted as long as they can be reproduced for printing. Please submit all entries to Kim Lyons by June 30, 2005. Winners will be determined by the end of July. ■

Plans Underway for The Arc of Maryland 2005 Convention tatewide advocates and consumers will come together on June 3 for The Arc of Maryland’s 2005 Annual Convention. The event will be held at Martin’s Crosswinds in Prince George’s County.

An Awards Luncheon will kick off the convention. Workshops, including one focusing on The Arc of Maryland’s exciting new media campaign, will be offered from 1:00—5:00 p.m. The annual meeting, elections and the President and Ambassador’s Reception will follow from 5:00—7:00 p.m.

Surgeon General Launches “Year of the Healthy Child” he Year of the Healthy Child,” a program offered by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General to improve the mind, body and spirit of children from preconception through the teen years, is getting some help from The Arc of Baltimore.

Volunteers and staff are spreading the word about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), an array of life-long birth defects caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. The spectrum ranges from slight learning disabilities and/or physical abnormalities to full-blown Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, which can include severe learning disabilities, growth deficiencies, abnormal facial features and central nervous system disorders.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the leading preventable birth defect in the United States.

“We must prevent all injury and illness that is preventable in society, and alcohol related birth defects are completely preventable,” U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona says. “We do not know what, if any, amount of alcohol is safe…Therefore, it’s in the child’s best interest for a pregnant woman to simply not drink alcohol.”

affected by alcohol consumption within the earliest weeks after conception, even before a woman knows that she is pregnant. Consequently, the Surgeon General recommends that women who are considering becoming pregnant abstain from consuming alcohol. In addition: 1. A pregnant woman who has already consumed alcohol during her pregnancy should stop in order to minimize further risk.

2. Since nearly half of all births in the United States are unplanned, women of child-bearing age should consult their physician and take steps to reduce the possibility of prenatal alcohol exposure.

3. Health professionals should inquire routinely about alcohol consumption in women of childbearing age, inform them of the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and advise them not to drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy.

Despite public health advisories and subsequent efforts to disseminate this information, recent data indicates that significant numbers of women continue to drink during pregnancy, many in a high-risk manner that places the fetus

at risk for a broad range of problems.

For example, data suggests that rates of binge drinking and drinking seven or more drinks per week among both pregnant women and non-pregnant women of childbearing age have not declined in recent years. Many women who know they are pregnant report drinking at these levels.

In addition, recent analysis of obstetrical textbooks suggests that physicians may not be receiving adequate instruction about the dangers of prenatal alcohol exposure. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises against drinking at all during pregnancy. Nevertheless, only 24 percent of obstetrical textbooks published since 1990 recommended abstinence during pregnancy.

A number of resources are available to assist healthcare and social services professionals in advising their patients to reduce and refrain from alcohol in pregnancy. These include the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, NIH (www.niaaa.nih.gov), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (www.fasdcenter.samhsa.gov/). ■

Community Living Reorganization Benefits Everyone he Arc of Baltimore’s Community Living Program has reorganized its service delivery system to provide even more opportunities for individuals to achieve positive outcomes in their communities.

The program, which provides services to more than 300 people, now includes Community Supported Living Arrangements (CSLA), Residential Services, Individual Family Care, and Individual Support Services. Services are provided in a variety of community settings with varying levels of support dictated by individual needs.

The program has two geographic teams. Community Living East is led by Lori Miller, director, and Aaron Atkinson, assistant director. Community Living West is headed by Ron Christian, director, and Dele Sangodeyi, assistant director.

According to Marre Fanning, assistant executive director of community living, “The teams are empowered and responsible for making good things happen for the individuals we support.

“It is our vision that we will be able to better support individuals if we are knowledgeable about the services and resources in the communities in which they reside. By geographically aligning teams, coordinators and support staff will share resources, services and information with each other to make it possible for individuals to have more opportunities for inclusion,” she continued.

“We also envision that individuals who live in close proximity to each other will be connected so that they can provide support to each other.”

Teams have been working together since mid-November to ensure a smooth transition for individuals who have been assigned to new coordinators. Geographic assignments were implemented on March 1. Families, friends and colleagues will meet the new leadership team and coordinators at an open house later this month.

“The Community Living Department is very fortunate to have a group of professional, knowledgeable staff dedicated to helping people developing meaningful friendships and to maximizing their opportunity to participate more fully in all aspects of community life,” said Executive Director Stephen H. Morgan. ■

beginning to plan summer vacations. A number are hoping to go to Club Venture, the agency’s vacation program for adults with developmental disabilities.

Located in Western Maryland’s beautiful Catoctin Mountains, Club Venture offers activities galore, from aerobics, swimming, sports and fishing…to crafts, music and drama. Adding to the excitement are special events like Spa Day, Talent Night, Olympics Day, campfires and dances— all perennial favorites. With staff members from virtually every department of The Arc of Baltimore pitching in, Club Venture is a family affair in the best and truest sense.

Ideally, everyone who wants to attend Club Venture could have an opportunity to do so. Although we do everything we can to keep tuition reasonably priced, a number of people simply cannot afford to go. New Members Augment Board Talents wo new members of The Arc of Baltimore’s board of directors are ready to lend their expertise to the agency.

Barbara D. Richards is human resources director for Riderwood Retirement Communities in Silver Spring, Maryland. She is in charge of implementing programs and practices related to employee satisfaction, employee retention, training and development, employee events, wage and survey analysis and employee relations.

Previously, she served as senior organizational development specialist for Erickson Retirement Communities.

There, she developed and implemented company-wide programs related to performance feedback, mentoring, life skills for front-line employees, and diversity awareness and expansion.

She also worked in human resources for Oak Crest Village Retirement Community, where she facilitated the placement of workers from The Arc of Baltimore in available jobs.

Richards holds a B.A. degree in sociology from C. W. Post College of Long Island University. In 1999, she received her Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification. Four years later, she was certified in Leadership Training by Development Dimensions Int’l., Inc. Joyce Tarrant is a communications specialist in the network operations department of Verizon. She is responsible for presentations, speechwriting and web content and development.

Previously, Tarrant held a number of marketing and public relations positions, including director of public affairs for the Transplant Resource Center of Maryland, for which she promoted organ and tissue donation through the State. As associate director of publications for the University of Maryland Medical Systems, she produced the hospital’s monthly employee newsletter, “Medifacts.”

Tarrant hold a B.S. degree in mass communications from Towson University. She is pursuing a Master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix. ■

Feedback Continues in Positive Vein n November, The Arc of Baltimore surveyed individuals who receive services and, where applicable, parents or caregivers of people receiving services. The results are in, and they continue to be quite encouraging!

The survey evaluated the following issues: choice, respect, privacy, goals and outcomes, and overall satisfaction. People receiving services rated issues on a scale of 1 to 3, with 3 being the highest level of satisfaction. Parents and caregivers used a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest level of satisfaction.

Graphic representations of survey results are presented below. One hundred seventy-eight people who receive services responded, as did 75 caregivers. Thanks to everyone who participated!

“Due to the success of the past few tournaments, the event committee agreed unanimously to expand the tournament to accommodate two hundred-plus players,” executive director Steve Morgan explained.

Included among the many celebrities who have already signed up to play are Brooks Robinson, Lenny Moore, Scott Garceau and Tom Tasselmyer.

The tournament includes a round of golf, a continental breakfast, a bull roast awards luncheon and a silent auction. Tickets are $150 per golfer or $600 per foursome. All proceeds benefit programs offered by The Arc of Baltimore.

OTHER EXCITING SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEWS: • The International Winter Games took place earlier this month in Nagano, Japan.

• The Arc of Baltimore’s singing group, “The Dreamers,” will perform at the statewide games.

• The first Special Olympic National Games will take place in Iowa in the summer of 2006.

• The next International Summer Games will take place in Shanghai, China in the summer of 2007.

Ravens Fan Takes the Plunge nthony Ciampaglia has a heart of steel…and gold. In January, the spirited Parkville resident and 20 fellow members of the Ravens Roost booster club braved the frigid waters of the Chesapeake Bay as part of the annual Polar Bear Plunge, a fundraiser to benefit the 10,000 athletes who train and compete in Special Olympics events each year in Maryland. Ciampaglia raised $1,000 on his own.

“It really took my breath away,” recalls Ciampaglia. “I stayed in the water for about a minute, and then I threw off my water shoes and ran up the beach barefoot. My feet were so freezing I couldn’t stand to have them in wet shoes!”

This was the third time Ciampaglia participated. He said the water was a balmy 32 degrees, “the warmest” Plunge he can remember.

An avid Ravens’ fan, Ciampaglia is active in the Ravens Roost. In addition to cheering on their favorite team, members do a lot of community service together. Last year they distributed Thanksgiving Dinners to needy people and conducted a Christmas toy drive.

Clearly, Ciampaglia is altruistic. While job hunting, his most important consideration was to find a position in which he could do something to help others. So when staff from The Arc of Baltimore discovered an opening for an aide at United Cerebral Palsy, Ciampaglia was thrilled. He got the position and spends his days helping staff with activities and meals. ■

Mike Marshall Named Director of Quality Assurance

community living. Prior to joining The Arc, he worked as the director of supported living for The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region. Marshall is still involved with that agency as a therapeutic foster parent.

He holds a bachelors degree in counseling from the University of Maryland College Park and a masters degree in human resource development from Towson University. He and his wife, Denise, reside in the Towson area with their three children. ■ HOWARD KORN

he Arc of Baltimore is pleased to announce Mike Marshall’s appointment as Director of Quality Assurance. He will be responsible for overseeing the quality of services provided by the agency to ensure that it promotes and protects individuals’ rights, safety, health, satisfaction and community inclusion.

“Mike will play an integral role in the growth and development of The Arc,” states Associate Executive Director Kathleen Durkin. “He possesses an array of talents, including a strong background in the developmental disabilities field.”
