STATUTORY HOLIDAYS

UNDERAGE REGISTRATION POLICY

Group programs are not scheduled to take place on statutory holidays or weekends when a statutory holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, and program fees have been calculated accordingly. Exceptions include group fitness classes. Holiday weekend schedules and hours will be posted online at arbutusclub.com.

Children underage for a specific program must receive approval from the Coordinator/Director of that program before registering. If permission is given, underage participants must register with the Recreation Services Desk directly so that we may bypass the established age restriction. Please note that receiving advanced approval does not guarantee a spot in the program.

CLUB COACHING POLICY The use of professional instructors or coaches from outside the Club is not permitted. Only those who have been contracted by the Club may teach on Club premises.

PROGRAM FEES All program and related fees will be billed to your member account. Regular weekly programs will be billed monthly for the program’s duration. Workshops and short-term activities will be billed in the month they occur.

ACTIVITY & SPORT ASSOCIATION FEES Some program areas are required to have members register with their provincial sport governing association for the purpose of insurance coverage to participate in tournaments and events. These fees may be billed seasonally or yearly and are listed on the program pages for which they apply. Some areas also have activity fees, billed seasonally or yearly, and are used to pay for special equipment, gifts, awards, seasonal parties, events, and other program enhancements.

6

MONDAY, JANUARY 8, 2024

PROGRAMS BROCHURE | FA L L 2 02 3

PROGRAM APPROVALS Some programs require approval from the Coordinator/Director of the activity area, prior to registering, to ensure participants are at a required level for the class. If a member is incorrectly registered for a class, the Coordinator/Director reserves the right to remove them and recommend another class more suitable for their age or skill level. If an alternative class is not available, the member will be removed from the class.

REGISTRATION WAITLISTS During the initial days of each registration period, it is recommended to make use of the wait list feature if you do not secure your preferred program dates and times. As space becomes available for the program, waitlisted participants will automatically be registered and notified by email. If you no longer want a spot in the class, please remove yourself or your child from the waitlist, or from the class upon receipt of the notification. You may also contact the Registration Desk at registration@arbutusclub.com to cancel any classes or waitlists.

general info MISSED/MAKE-UP CLASSES

ACTIVITY COMMITTEES

If you miss a class for any reason, it is the decision of the Coordinator/Director of each activity area, as to whether they can accommodate a make-up lesson. Most activity areas do not offer this option as it is disruptive to participants registered and is challenging for staff to accommodate.

The success of our activity areas is in large part due to the contributions made by volunteer Committee members. If you would like to participate in one of our Activity Committees, please fill out an application form available at Club Reception or email Craig Mercer at cmercer@arbutusclub.com.

CHILDREN UNDER 8 YEARS A parent/caregiver (16yrs+) must always accompany children under 8 years old while in the Club. You must drop off and pick up your child for all programs as children under 8 years of age will not be released from the program on their own.

ALLERGY AWARE Recreation Services Staff are allergy aware and request that parents do not pack snacks for their children that contain common allergens, such as peanuts. If your child has an allergy, you would like us to be aware of, please contact the Recreation Services Desk and we will notify the instructor.

GUEST POLICY Recreation programs and events are restricted to members only, unless otherwise noted. A limited number of guests may be permitted to attend 25 Year Club events, special youth events and various one-time workshops, if space permits before the event date.

ERIC BUTLER Head Basketball Coach eric@splitsecondbasketball.com Eric Butler played basketball at Prince of Wales High School, the University of British Columbia and then professionally in Europe. He has helped thousands of local players develop their skills and build personal confidence from their experience at Split Second.

Experienced Split-Second Basketball coaches create a fun, challenging and supportive environment to help young athletes find their path through basketball. The goal of the program is for players to have fun, create great habits, and master fundamental basketball skills. Our players do more than just ‘play’ basketball. We break the game down into six Split Second habits and teach the little technical details that matter the most. Then we practice, teach, practice, teach, practice... until great habits are developed. To successfully participate in class, players must be able to listen to and follow instructions from the coaches. Any players not yet ready to do this will be asked to return to the program once they are able to do so.

Dance THE DANCE PROGRAM

MARLENE HERSHFIELD Dance Director mhershfield@arbutusclub.com

Marlene Hershfield, A.I.S.T.D, is one of Vancouver’s most respected dance educators. Some of her students have gone on to notable dance careers. She has an extensive background in teaching ballet, jazz and national as well as choreography and has adjudicated at numerous festivals. She brings decades of wisdom, and leadership to the dance program. Marlene is proud of her dynamic team of experienced teachers who are sure to inspire your children to explore and enjoy dance in many exciting forms.

The Arbutus Club Academy of Dance cultivates young dancers, ages 2.5-19 years from their first step into a dance studio through their pre-professional training. Students discover their individual artistic voices in a creative environment with the guidance of an internationally recognized faculty. The personal attention encourages students to mature as dancers, grow as individuals and enrich their passion for the art form.

PROGRAM INFORMATION Students enrolling in dance, with the exception of preschool classes, are required to make a full-year commitment as classes are progressive and depend on weekly development. Class placement is determined at the teacher’s discretion.

PROGRAM ATTENDANCE While we want our students to have fun, dancing is a commitment. Students registered in dance are expected to remain in the program for the full term. We ask that parents ensure students arrive on time, attend every class, and inform us in advance by email at mhershfield@arbutusclub.com if they have to miss a class for medical, illness or other reasons.

SMALL CLASSES All classes require a minimum of five participants to run at the listed price. If a class has fewer students, the teacher may offer the class with an additional charge.

BALLET EXAMS Exams motivate both serious and recreational dancers to develop discipline, confidence and a sense of achievement. Students are examined by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, London, England, in either the Imperial Society of Dance or the Cecchetti Society. Usually held in June and administered by international examiners, exams involve additional expenses such as entry fees and outfits. Instructors determine which dancers are ready to be examined. Examination candidates must register for at least two ballet classes per week from the grade one level. Students on pointe require a minimum of three lessons per week.

Please note that prime timeslots are reserved for classes first and privates/semi-private sessions are scheduled around that. This is to maximize the number of member participation in our program. To book a private lesson, contact Daniela Tempesta, Group Fitness & Pilates Coordinator, at dtempesta@ arbutusclub.com.

DROP-IN POLICY ALL LEVELS FOCUS TRAINING Pre-registration will be required and opened 1 month prior but requires no commitment to class sessions – you can register in one or a few throughout the month! We feel this will allow members to come and practice more frequently in a day and time that fits, particularly if they didn’t get into a class of their choosing.

MAKE UP CLASSES Make-up classes are allowed. Please communicate with your instructor and the Group Fitness & Pilates Coordinator if you need to miss a class. All make-up classes must be made within that session’s offering and done through the Group Fitness & Pilates Coordinator by emailing: dtempesta@arbutusclub.com. She will then coordinate which class you are able to attend to make up a class. This will also help honour your time and prevent a line up of members for a class, hoping to get into the class.

Drop-ins are permitted based on availability ($32.00 fee). You may come to a class of your choosing to check availability of the class. You will be asked to fill out a chit and your account will be charged. .

LATE CLASS POLICY Participants are asked to arrive to class on time. Those who are more than 5 minutes late will not be permitted to enter the studio as it is disruptive to the other participants.

STATUTORY HOLIDAYS Classes are not offered on statutory holidays or the weekend if a holiday falls on a Friday or Monday. Please feel free to book a private appointment with your favourite instructor or contact the Group Fitness & Pilates Coordinator for assistance.

Please do not register for classes unless you want to commit to the remainder of the session classes.

MASKS & SOCKS Mask and socks are optional in class.

squash LEAGUES, CHALLENGE PYRAMID & DROP-IN The following leagues and challenge pyramid provide a great opportunity for all levels of players to get involved with squash at The Club. To sign up, contact Dave Glass, Head Squash Professional at dglass@ arbutusclub.com.

ARBUTUS SQUASH CHALLENGE PYRAMID The pyramid is located on the wall at the north end of the squash lobby. The goal is to try and get your name as close to the top of the pyramid as possible. You move higher by challenging and beating anyone one spot to your left or one row above. If you win your best of 5 challenge match, you take the position of the losing player and move everyone down 1 position until your original spot is filled. There will be a Men’s and a Women’s pyramid and you can join the one you feel comfortable with. Contact Dave Glass at dglass@arbutusclub.com to have a tag made with your name and phone number to be added to the pyramid.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOUSE LEAGUE This is a semi-competitive league where players are grouped according to level of play. Players then play each member of their group in a standard best of five game match each Wednesday. Results are tallied with group winners graduating to the next level for the following cycle. A spares list is available to contact if you are unable to commit to play every week.

VANCOUVER SQUASH LEAGUE This is a competitive league and players must be Squash BC members. Teams of five players are assembled to take on Clubs across greater Vancouver. Men play on Mondays, women on Tuesdays. Matches alternate home and away with home teams responsible for entertaining visitors with a light dinner and beverages. All levels of play are welcome to try out.

Volleyball Head Coach brian@smashvolleyball.com Brian is passionate about creating positive experiences for children and coaches so that they learn teamwork, humility, and self-confidence through volleyball. Brian fell in love with the game in grade 8 while playing in Port Moody on his school’s beach volleyball court and never slowed down. At 20 years of age, he moved to Toronto to train with the national team and compete on the world stage in beach volleyball. A student of the game, he is now an international referee with a goal to represent Canada at the 2024 and 2028 Olympics. After 20 years of beach volleyball, Brian found his way back to indoor volleyball as a coach at West Point Grey Academy and in 2018 he co-founded Smash Volleyball.

PHYSICAL LITERACY PROGRAMS (6-8 YRS) I CAN PLAY! (6-8 YRS) The Arbutus Club I CAN PLAY physical literacy program improves kids’ ability to move on land, in/on water, in air and across ice. Kids learn to move to music, improve their agility, balance, coordination, and speed along with the ability to catch, jump, run, swim, and throw. Most of all the goal of the program is to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity, improve executive function skills, and provide participants with the tools they need to be confident and competent to play a wide range of sports so that they can say… “I CAN PLAY”! The I CAN PLAY program is designed for all levels of ability. If you have no athletic experience this program helps you develop the tools you need to set you on course, or if you play competitive sports this program will help you become a better athlete to improve your sport performance. Please note: This is a coed program and groups will be participating in the program together. We have separate registrations to ensure that participation is balanced between boys and girls.
