THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Members, Welcome back! This is a new year for our Club, marking a significant new beginning. After almost 30 years, we bid farewell to our CEO, Brent Elkington. Brent began his career at The Arbutus Club as Assistant General Manager/Club House Manager, under John Furlong in April of 1994, and served for seven years. Brent assumed the challenging role of Acting CEO while John managed the bid for the 2010 Olympics. He officially became the Club's CEO in July 2003. On page 12, Brent reflects on his time at the Club, and we further spotlight the significant contributions he has made.

On behalf of The Board of Directors and the membership, Brent, we can't thank you enough for your contributions, commitment, and leadership over the last 30 years. You have led the team that has transformed our Club into the world-class Club it is today. After three decades, we all say goodbye to you, our Club CEO, with a heavy heart and profound gratitude. September once again represents the "New Year" for The Club. All our programs have begun, and families are fully juggling work, school, and extra-curricular activities. One thing that makes The Club special is that we offer so many activities under one roof. This Fall, we saw a total of 4,605 program registrations, a truly remarkable number. I hope you were able to attend the Fall Funfest on September 6th. We had an incredible turnout with over 1,000 members attending—always a family favourite! Over 820 hot dogs and 670 cobs of corn were handed out by the fantastic Arbutus Club F&B team. In addition, over 2,800 mini donuts and 650 bags of popcorn were passed on to willing Funfest goers. What a successful event. At this time, I'd also like to extend a very warm Arbutus Club welcome to the Club's new CEO, Mr. Larry Ho. Larry officially began his tenure as the Club's CEO on September 5th. With a wealth of knowledge and experience in the club industry, Larry has been the General Manager of the Jericho Tennis Club since 2016, demonstrating exceptional leadership and vision. You can learn more about Larry, his achievements, and future goals on page 16. We're excited to see him lead The Club into its next chapter.

The Bark FALL 2023

While the House Committees typically don't convene over the summer, giving the Board and Committee members a well-deserved break, our Long-Range Planning and Development Committee (LRP&D Committee) met in July. This committee includes an impressive group of individuals with vast experience in strategic planning and development. As you may remember, we launched the Arbutus 2020 Project after three years of focus groups, surveys, and meetings. Member engagement is critical in understanding what our Club and members need for the next phase of our evolution. The LRP&D Committee has initiated the RFP (Request for Proposal) process to select a consulting firm to assist The Club in carrying out the tasks of member engagement and formal long-range planning activities. Another area the LRP&D Committee addressed was our swimming pool, determining that a facility upgrade is long overdue. This project now lies with the Planning and Facilities Committee, with discussions underway. We undoubtedly have some exciting times ahead, beginning with several special events this Fall. Do peruse the following pages to ensure you don't miss out. The Board welcomes your comments and suggestions. Please feel free to email me at President@arbutusclub.com. I look forward to seeing everyone around the Club.

Warm regards,

Jeff Thorsteinson Club President president@arbutusclub.com

BRENT ELKINGTON 12

CLUB LIFE

"I am most proud of the people I have hired, worked with, and helped develop, particularly the long-standing managers I worked with for over 25 years." — BRENT ELKINGTON

As Club CEO, Brent Elkington bids adieu, he reflects on his legacy, including the remarkable transformation he orchestrated during his tenure, and provides a glimpse into his next chapter. WHAT ARE YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS DURING YOUR TIME AS CEO OF OUR CLUB?

Planning and delivering successful renovations is a proud achievement. The three major renovations I managed were complex and demanding, requiring careful planning and coordination. These projects were very gratifying, and I am extremely proud of how The Club looks today. I am most proud of the people I have hired, worked with, and helped develop, particularly the long-standing managers I worked with for over 25 years. Christine Piner was the Club’s Catering Manager when I first started. Over time, with my recommendation, Christine evolved into the Director of Membership. She is the heartbeat of The Club. Don Robinson was hired as the Food and Beverage Manager one month before Chef Michael. He brought the Food and Beverage Department to a level unparalleled by other private clubs. We are so lucky to have him back as our Director of Food and Beverage. Michael Couzelis, whom I hired in my second year as our Executive Chef, is highly respected and considered one of the top certified Chef de Cuisines in the city. Shelley Garland started in catering right after university and now she oversees our engineers, custodial staff, spa, and Club operations. The Arbutus Club has a team of dedicated, long-serving staff who have contributed significantly to the organization. Their commitment is a testament to a positive work environment, a strong sense of community, and appreciation from the members.

HOW HAS THE CLUB EVOLVED SINCE YOU TOOK THE HELM, & WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU WITNESSED OVER THE YEARS?

I began in April 1994, and The Club was in dire need of a renovation. We began with a new pool, family change rooms, gymnastics studio, The Bistro, The Lounge, and The Fireside. We enhanced the aesthetics, functionality, and modernity of The Club, attracting new members and providing existing members with a better environment to enjoy. After this transformation, with continued support from the Board of Directors and the membership, we continued our vision: adding underground parking, four additional covered tennis courts, a spa, and a youth room. Then, of course, Arbutus 2020, which transformed The Club into what it is today. After 30 years I have seen every section and facility of The Club renovated at least once, many twice.

A Heartfelt Goodbye to CEO

BRENT ELKINGTON THE ARBUTUS CLUB

WHAT MEMORABLE MOMENTS OR EVENTS STAND OUT FROM YOUR TENURE AS CEO?

There are too many to write down. I have always been particularly proud of introducing events for all members to attend. The Canada Day Pancake Breakfast and the Parking Lot Party are examples of festivities we have been doing for 28 years. Today’s team leaders from Recreation Services and Food & Beverage have expanded our calendar with the Spring Carnival, Halloween Party and Grapes & Hops. COVID-19 was certainly a memorable time in my career. It was challenging for everyone, but I had tremendous support from the Board, members, and staff. AS YOU STEP DOWN, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER THE INCOMING CEO?

I don’t think I need to offer advice to the incoming CEO. The Arbutus Club has a team of dedicated, long-serving management and staff who have contributed significantly to the organization and are ready to support their new leader. WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT BEING THE CEO OF THE CLUB?

I will miss seeing the staff. Some I see every morning, some weekly, and with some I’ve spent more time than with my family. Many will remain lifelong friends. Every person at The Club has meant something to me. It will be a difficult transition not working side by side with these amazing people. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR RETIREMENT?

My partner, Tracy, and I will be moving to the Okanagan full time, with most of our winter spent skiing and vacationing. I have a passion for wine, and in the Okanagan, they have me surrounded. Who knows where that will take me, but I am looking forward to my next chapter.

"He successfully completed two transformative construction projects which have set us on a trajectory for years of continued success." — JEFF HAYES

A ‘tribute’ from long-time member and Former Past President, Jeff Hayes. "Nobody deserves more credit than Brent for the unprecedented success of The Arbutus Club over the last two decades. The demand for new membership, the quality of our facilities, the breadth of our recreations programs and our food and beverage offerings are the envy of clubs everywhere. He successfully completed two transformative construction projects which have set us on a trajectory for years of continued success. He led with us with his Saskatchewan humility and humanity, always giving credit to others. In 1959, Carolyn Leigh wrote the lyrics for a famous Cy Coleman song that Sinatra made famous. And wait till you see that sunshine day You ain’t seen nothin’ yet The best is yet to come and babe won’t it be fine? That is my family and I’s wish for Brent and Tracy as they enjoy this next chapter in their lives."

A Farewell, Not a Goodbye — Don Robinson, Director of Food & Beverage shares insights into the unique impact of Brent's leadership. "What most members don’t know is the biggest impact on their club experience that Brent has had is through the staff, the rank and file, his everyday interactions with the employees, and his sense of humor. Brent engages with each staff in a relatable manner by understanding different aspects of each staff, their family and/or what is important to them. He teaches, almost daily, a concept that he taught me early on in my first months here: a lesson in “club culture”. The idea is that The Club is the single most important thing and that no one line staff, manager or member is more important than The Club itself. This concept has allowed the entire team to always make decisions that are in the best interests of The Club and better serve our members." ♦

Welcome

LARRY HO

Join us in welcoming our newly appointed CEO, Larry Ho, and discover the dynamic leader who will help shape the future of The Arbutus Club.

CAN YOU EXPAND ON YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE AND RELATED EDUCATION?

During my 16-year career in the casino resort industry, I held various positions with the goal of becoming a CEO. These roles included General Manager, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Finance, and Corporate Strategy Senior Associate in different North American cities. For the past 7 years, I served as the General Manager of Jericho Tennis Club. I earned both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Accountancy from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The CFO to CEO career path was a prevalent trajectory in the hospitality industry during those years. DO YOU LIVE BY A CERTAIN PHRASE OR PRINCIPLE? TELL US ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL MOTTO.

"Stay humble and stay hungry." Mindset has always played a large part, personally and professionally, for me. I am a firm believer in continuous improvement in all that I do. WHEN YOU'RE NOT AT WORK, HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR TIME?

Family activities first and foremost. I’m fortunate to be married to my wonderful wife, Pam, with whom I share two amazing children: our 6-year-old daughter Elly and our 17-month-old son Jalen. Second would be watching or playing sports. I’m a huge fan of the Seattle Seahawks and the Utah Jazz. Third would be a lover of all food and cuisine. If I can do all three at the same time, even better.

In the ever-evolving landscape of our Club, change is a constant companion. Today, we embark on a journey to meet the driving force behind our next chapter, Larry Ho, our newly appointed Club CEO. Discover the dynamic leader who will help shape the future of our beloved Club as we delve into his vision, his aspirations, and the path that led him to this pivotal role.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU'RE DETERMINED TO ACCOMPLISH OR EXPERIENCE IN YOUR LIFETIME?

Travel and experience as many different cultures as possible. WHAT WERE YOUR INITIAL THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS WHEN YOU FIRST LEARNED ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD OUR CLUB?

My initial feeling was that this opportunity may only surface once in my career, and I was going to give it my best shot. While my family and I were very content with Jericho, we could not let this opportunity pass by. Having a young family and learning about the many positive things that a private club offers families, the motto "Putting Families First" rang true to my core values. ♦

Gardening

fall yard prep

for a flourishing growing season While spring and summer tend to steal the gardening spotlight, it's essential not to underestimate the significance of Fall and Winter in nurturing a successful garden.

T

he Fall offers a valuable opportunity for reflection, planning, and fine-tuning. By investing time and effort into your garden during this season, you can lay the foundation for an impressive and bountiful growing season ahead. By using the 6 strategies outlined by our gardener, Tina, you can ensure a flourishing garden in the months to come.

18

The Bark FALL 2023

CLUB LIFE

Prune Perennials to Dormancy As the gardening calendar transitions, it's essential to trim perennials back to the ground, creating a visually pleasing winter landscape while curbing potential pest issues. This practice eliminates the risk of pests laying eggs for the following season. Once the pruning is complete, responsibly dispose of the debris by adding it to your compost pile, thereby contributing to a more sustainable gardening process.

Bid Farewell to Annuals Though it may evoke a sense of nostalgia, removing annual plants before the first frost is crucial. This action prevents regret as the frost arrives and saves you from the sight of withered plants. By promptly removing annuals from both landscapes and pots, you maintain a clean and organized garden, fostering an environment conducive to future growth.

Capitalize on Fall Planting Opportunities Fall presents an ideal window for planting due to the combination of warm soil and cooler air. This climate is perfect for fostering robust root growth, enhancing the overall health of your plants. Take advantage of this time to reposition perennials within your garden, allowing them ample time to establish themselves before the ground freezes. Additionally, seize the opportunity to benefit from end-of-season sales at nurseries, acquiring trees and shrubs at reduced prices.

Protect Vulnerable Plants

Invest in Spring Blooms Prioritize the planting of springflowering bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and crocuses during the fall season. This strategic move ensures vibrant blooms in the upcoming spring. To deter pests from interfering with your efforts, consider placing a layer of chicken wire over the bulbs. This simple step safeguards your investment while allowing you to enjoy the full beauty of your garden come spring.

Mindful Leaf Management As nature's gift, fallen leaves provide a valuable resource for your garden. However, larger leaves can hinder the growth of grass and perennials if left unattended. Instead of letting them mat down and decompose slowly, engage in active leaf management. By raking, shredding, and mulching leaves, you create a nutrient-rich layer that enhances your soil, provides insulation for plants, and suppresses weed growth. Transforming this oftenoverlooked waste into a valuable asset demonstrates a holistic approach to gardening.

With the arrival of dormancy, safeguard newly planted or sensitive plants from the harsh elements of winter. Implement protective measures such as piling leaves or using fabric coverings, and consider employing evergreen boughs for added insulation. Mark the locations of these protected plants to ensure their timely uncovering in the upcoming spring, highlighting your commitment to their well-being. ♦

A BLOOMING ADDITION TO OUR TEAM Tina Phillips joined our Operation's department, as our full-time Gardener in March of this year, and brings her innate green thumb and passion for nurturing nature.

Fun fact about Tina: Tina used to be a hairstylist, jetting off to various destinations and even participating in numerous hair competitions. Now her clients are of a greener hue.

o celebrate Canada’s birthday, members and their families put on their maple leaf hockey jerseys and wore red and white to enjoy a festive feast at the annual Canada Day Pancake Breakfast.

Despite the early morning, our members certainly brought the party energy. Our Board of Directors helped fuel the festivities with delicious pancakes served with maple syrup, fresh berries, whip cream and more. To kick off the party for our junior members, children of all ages were challenged to complete the Canada Day Bingo Scavenger Hunt. The hunt took them all around the event searching for Canadian icons such beavers and moose, testing their knowledge by singing all the lyrics to O’ Canada, and naming all 13 provinces and territories. Our junior members certainly knew their stuff and many prizes were handed out that morning! The ever-popular arts and crafts stations were in full swing as members were able to decorate their own Canada Day tote bag or make camp-inspired friendship bracelets. On the turf field there was climbing walls and bouncy castles galore for the young (and young at heart) to enjoy and burn off some energy.

Private Playland, arguably one of the best events of the entire summer, returned this past June - and what a night it was! This annual event, co-hosted with the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, is an exclusive opportunity for our members to experience Playland with their families and friends. It was a beautiful summer evening, the perfect backdrop for this event. Right from the start, our members were greeted by our fabulous Recreation Services team, including Gay Dioneda, Chloe Ekkebus and a team of youth leaders. You could feel the excitement in the air as members lined up outside, ready for the Playland gates to open, spotting their friends in line. Upon entering the amusement park, members and their guests had their pick of rides and carnival games to enjoy. Those thrill-seeking members braved the ‘The Beast’, the ‘Wooden Roller Coaster’ and the’ Hellevator’, while those who enjoy not screaming their lungs out made their way to the ‘Sea-to-Sky Swinger’ and the ‘Merry Go Round’. No trip to Playland is complete without some tasty fair food! Members were able to sit back and enjoy dinner and, most importantly, the famous mini donuts, with their friends without worrying about long lines. We loved organizing this special event for our members, we hope everyone had a blast and thank you for continuing to make this event so memorable. ♦

FOOD LIFE CLUB & BEVERAGE

The Arbutus Club celebrated the return of club members from their summer adventures with the annual welcome back party which is now coined Fall Funfest - an event packed with family fun for everyone As the warm hues of Summer sink off into the sunset, we welcome in the crispy and cozy ambience of Fall and usher in a new season of celebration with our Fall Funfest. This festive event marked the return of our members from their summer holidays and sets the tone for the coming months by embracing the changing of the season and providing an opportunity to reconnect with friends and family. This year, the Fall Funfest transported guests back in time with groovy 70’s themed décor that blended the nostalgia of a beloved era with anticipation of the Fall season. The Youth Room’s mix of vibrant hues like mustard yellow and burnt orange, hanging disco balls, and flower power galore set the stage for the good times. Members of all ages could enjoy the old school table games like Ping Pong, Pac Man, Memory Challenges and more! The main attraction of this space was the Family Tree Mural where guests could take polaroid photos and hung them on the giant Arbutus tree to showcase all the beautiful families that we have here at The Club.

game! set! match! Accomplished junior tennis player, Connor Church, is one to watch as he climbs the ranks in junior tennis.

C

onnor Church is quickly becoming someone to watch in the Boys Under 18 age group, ranking #1 in BC, #6 in Canada, and #178 in the world. The 16 year old has been enjoying great results in tennis at the provincial, national, and now international junior level. Members who attended the Daniel Nestor Doubles exhibition match, that The Club hosted in the Spring, had the opportunity to see Connor in action as he teamed up with the Olympic Gold Medalist. Connor started playing tennis when he was 6 years old and has always loved the sport. He was a multi-sport athlete as a kid; playing competitive tennis, ice hockey, and ski racing. By the age of eleven, Connor made the decision to let go of competitive ice hockey and ski racing to focus on competing in tennis tournaments. He does still play open hockey and ski whenever he gets a chance to. When asked who his favourite tennis player was, there was no other option for him but to name a few. “There are so many great young players right now. Carlos Alcaraz, at twenty, is the number one player in the world. Holger Rune and Casper Ruud are top ten players. I do enjoy watching Nick Kyrgios because of his incredible talent and insane shot-making skills. It’s hard to decide” he says. Roger Federer, however, remained at the top of his list, with Connor pointing out how he admired Federer’s effortless technique, fluid game-style, and mental toughness. Connor has accomplished a number of notable results in his sport so far. His favourite tennis result to date was in the ITF J100 Vancouver at Stanley Park, where he won singles and doubles with his partner, Denny Bao. He did not drop a set in singles and won against the number one seed, Jagger Leach, Lindsay Davenport’s son. Connor continues to maintain his ambitions in competitive tennis, with a verbal commitment to play Division 1 Men's Tennis at Cornell University while studying Sciences in Fall 2024. Congratulations Connor on his accomplishments at such a young age! ♦

For many new parents, or new members, it can be difficult to know when to start enrolling their child in programming, what programs or services to utilize, and at what age.

W

e live in a time where there is practically unlimited access to parenting books, blogs, and social media accounts, all with different advice and opinions. This information overload can leave many parents feeling overwhelmed. The Children’s Centre at The Arbutus Club understands the mixed emotions that parents may feel leaving their little ones in the hands of a new caregiver for the first time and is here to guide and educate members on the benefits of available childminding service for both children and their parents. Our licensed Childminding is a drop-off service for children 2 weeks to 5 years old and our qualified staff provide a safe,

Babes (2wks- 1yrs) Our youngest visitor was 2 weeks when she arrived in her car seat for a visit. When a young baby comes into childminding, the baby is immediately placed in a safe and separate area and made comfortable. We understand that comfort levels may be different for every baby, so our caregivers pay special attention and take care to learn the needs of your baby. We discovered that babies may be comfortable in their own car seat or stroller or in a baby swing. If they are older, they may be happy in an Exersaucer, a highchair, a crib or just being held for a moment. While they are in their happy spot, your child is observing the older children play and learning from a distance, the skills that they themselves will need to know in a few months. Our caregiver also encourages interaction by talking to the babies or singing them a song. If appropriate, we ask the other children to interact with the baby by bringing them a safe baby toy or to read them a book. Your child will be fed and changed as necessary. But most important of all your baby will be well looked after.

fun, and nurturing environment. They use positive guidance to encourage the development of social skills and friendships among peers. In the Children’s Centre, we have a lot of members who ask, “What should I expect in childminding?” When asked this question, Connie Smith, Children’s Centre Manager, often wants to jump up and simply answer “Everything that is positive for your child!” The benefits of childcare are numerous and include the developing positive social and emotional skills, learning structure and routine, fostering independence, preparing for kindergarten, and allowing for both child and parent to be a part of a community with other families. To elaborate further on the benefits of childminding, this article will dive into the details of what childminding is like and what you can expect when you drop off your child (ren). The best way to do this is to break it down by age groups.

RECREATION SERVICES

Tots (1-2.5 yrs) This is a dynamic age to come to childminding. It is often the first time they are leaving their parents. When a tot is dropped off, our caregivers will invite them in to pick something to play with. This may take a little coaxing at first, but our space is filled with attractive and trendy toys that draw a child into the space. Many times, the child will not even turn around to say goodbye to their parents at the window. Once they are settled and playing, our caregivers will begin to observe their needs and which friends they would socialize well with. From there, your tot will be encouraged to join another friend to play. The caregivers may initiate something to play with or bring out new toys to draw them together. The caregiver will continue to encourage different types of play (i.e., pretend play, gross motor play, quiet play, or discovery play). When it’s snack time, your child will be taught to independently (when ready) take out their snack, eat, and then clean up after themselves. It’s truly a time of play, socialization, and learning.

Preschoolers (2.5 - 5yrs) Our preschoolers are our oldest group. This group of children absolutely LOVE coming to childminding. They often tell their parents that they want to go to “Leti’s House” to play. Leticia Vidal is our lead hand and main caregiver - more to come on Ms. Leti later in this article. When they arrive, our preschoolers usually open the door enthusiastically and run towards their favourite toy or their friends. Even if it’s their first time in childminding, it often does not take this age group long to learn what their favourite items to play with are and they do return looking for them. Some of our most popular items are the grocery store stand, Paw Patrol toys, Barbies and kitchen area. Like our tots, the preschooler gets observed and will be paired with other children to play with. The caregiver will discover their interests, bring out activities to stimulate their minds and entice them to create new games to play. The skills we promote with your children are independence, respectful manners, kind friendships, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, creative thinking, exploratory play, and most importantly confidence to be with other children and adults.

Children's Centre

Leticia Vidal (aka Ms. Leti) – Head Caregiver The Children’s Centre cannot be prouder to have Leticia Vidal as the Lead Hand and main caregiver in our Childminding room. Leti has over 30 years of experience working with children. She is talented with babies, being able to calm them, feed them and change them with ease. She has a natural rapport with tots and preschoolers, often bonding with them so much that children are still visiting her 10 years later! Leti is naturally cheerful, caring and nurturing. She cares with a genuine heart and will ensure your child is taught well in her care. She fosters independence, giving tots and preschools the chance to learn skills for themselves and providing opportunities for them to grow in confidence to take care of themselves.

"If you have a young one, you may consider having them spend time with Leti so that she can help your child prepare for preschool. As a preschool teacher myself, I am happy to learn when a student is coming with experience from childminding.” - Connie Smith All in all, our childminding service is much more than just childminding. It is truly a place you can trust to take care of your child(ren) while you are using The Club. Leti and her experienced staff will ensure your child is safe and well taken care of so that you can take care of yourself. ♦

We offer services Monday to Saturday 8:30 am-5:00 pm (until 8:00 pm Thursdays). You can book online from 30 minutes to 2 hours maximum per day. If you would like more information, please contact Connie Smith, Children Centre’s Manager at csmith@arbutusclub.com.

ring the alarm

First Aid

The Club prioritizes your safety by reminding you of what to do if the fire alarm sounds.

K

nowing and understanding emergency procedures is essential to ensuring the safety of all members of our community. Fire drills are extremely important to help familiarize members and staff with the procedures and evacuation route. They are also essentional for testing the effectiveness of our alarm systems and protocol. When it comes to emergency drills, the way we practice is the way we react in situations of high stress. It is important to learn and practice emergency preparedness as you would perform it if the situation were to arise. Through practice individuals become conditioned to respond automatically to specific cues such as the sound of a fire alarm. By practicing, you condition yourself to react quickly during a real emergency without wasting time or panicking. If you hear an alarm, it is important that you stop what you’re doing. Whether or not you know that it is a drill, it is essential to not ignore an alarm. If you hear an alarm, and you see smoke or flames, proceed to the nearest emergency exit immediately. If you hear an alarm but cannot see any signs of immediate danger you may choose to evacuate immediately or wait until directed by a staff person. Staff will be notified about the location of the fire, and they will be able to assist you in evacuating through the safest route. If you are being asked to evacuate by staff it is important to do so immediately, without collecting your belongings, and without finishing your current activity. Evacuating in a timely manner is both for your safety and the safety of the staff assisting you. It is also important to remember that an evacuation or fire drill is not the time to be leaving the property. If you are parked in the parkade or the parking lot, removing your car can be hazardous in the event of an emergency. Emergency preparedness does not only need to be something you practice during drills. Familiarizing yourself with emergency exits, especially in the facilities you frequent, will help you to react in a timelier manner in the event of an emergency. It will also allow you to navigate through the building safely if visibility is limited. If your children are in programs, they will be directed to evacuate with their instructors. If you are in a separate part of the building, make sure you evacuate as directed and meet your children at the muster station. To help prepare your children for an emergency in the building, it would be beneficial for you to have your own family plan in place as well. Having your children understand that it is best to stay with their instructors, follow staff personnel if they are in the building unsupervised, and meet you at the muster station is essential for their safety. ♦

What to do when you hear an alarm STOP. Stop what you're doing. Do not continue with activities, collect your belongings, or search for your children elsewhere in the building. EXIT. If you see signs of immediate

danger proceed to your nearest fire exit immediately. If you do not see signs of immediate danger either evacuate immediately or wait until directed by staff.

MEET. Proceed to the designated meeting point known as the muster station at the far end of the parking lot near Nanton St. WAIT. Wait to be directed by either staff or the fire department before re-entering the building or parking structure.

power in numbers From hockey to basketball - pickleball to tennis; Discover how group fitness can elevate your sports performance.

I

t’s often thought that the benefits of group fitness are general to one’s overall health and wellness rather than geared towards sport-related activity. In fact, they are intricately integrated and top athletes in most sports would agree and attribute their abilities largely in part to a holistic approach that includes what is known as cross-training. What is Cross-Training? Cross-training involves training in multiple disciplines that may or may not be directly related to your specific sport, to garner improvements in that specific sport. Cross-training can enhance your motivation to exercise and prevent burnout or overtraining in one specific area. Cross-training at The Club No matter what your sport is, cross-training in other modalities provides numerous benefits. The Arbutus Club Group Fitness Program offers many options to help you get to that next level in your sport. Hockey If your hockey game could use a little flexibility, our Yoga classes are the perfect fit. You’ll gain a beautiful combination of core and shoulder stability coupled with hip opening movement patterns that will surely increase your overall performance, whether you’re in net or not!

Basketball Are you finding yourself running out of breath too quickly when you hit the basketball court? Our Spin classes will help you increase your cardiovascular endurance and leg power so you can nail those jump shots, and play a full game, without fatiguing. Pickleball Our Intervals classes are fantastic for pickleball agility, quickness and reaction time. Each class utilizes a different equipment and class design, so you’ll get a fresh workout each and every time. Tennis Tennis is a popular sport at The Club, and any of our mind/body classes like Restore & Release can be vital to improving that backhand through strengthening and mobility exercises you’ll experience in that format. HOT TIPS Cross-training in other areas is a great way to take time off your training for sport so that when you come back to it, you’ll be stronger than ever. ♦

What are you most excited about for the 2023-2024 Season? Improving my hockey skills, hanging out with friends, and hopefully winning.

Do you have a favourite individual memory from previous seasons of playing within ACMHA? My favourite memory of playing in the ACMHA was making it to the BC Hockey Provincial Championships and having Jason Fothergill and Max Bresolin as my coaches. I’m proud of my teams’ accomplishments this past season. What are you most excited about for the 2023-2024 Season? Getting back out on the ice.

RECREATION SERVICES A look back at young Henry Jagger on the ice with the Canucks

Minor Hockey

henry jagger DIVISION: U18 (AGE 17) How long have you been playing within ACMHA? I started at 5 years old in Pups with my Dad as one of the coaches. I'm heading into my 3rd and final season of U18 and Minor Hockey What position do you play? Forward.

IT'S MORE THAN JUST A SPORT As we wrap up our roundtable with our 5 players the one common denominator no matter the players ages were how much they love playing with their friends. The memories created within The Arbutus Club Minor Hockey Association is more than the on-ice play, it is the friendships that last both on the ice and off the ice for a lifetime. ♦

What is your favorite thing about playing hockey at The Arbutus Club? The camaraderie, the après in the Bistro, Coach Jason, and getting my stick taped by the same guy who tapes the Canucks’ sticks. Do you have a favourite individual memory from previous seasons of playing within ACMHA? I think that the Chilliwack tournament was the most exciting place ever because it was our first “away” tournament. Beating Sunshine Coast on the Sunshine Coast. Breakfast before school in The Bistro with my team after the 6:00am practices. What are you most excited about for the 2023-2024 Season? Being with all my friends for our final year and getting to drive myself to practices and games.

Physiotherapy

master the game Physiotherapist, Dylan Rybski, offers useful tips on managing and preventing Tennis Elbow.

L

ateral epicondalgia, commonly known as tennis elbow, is a prevalent condition that impacts up to 50% of tennis players during their careers. This ailment stems from prolonged and repetitive strain on the forearm extensor tendons. Left unchecked, tennis elbow can be a vexing overuse injury that hampers performance and sidelines athletes. In this review, we delve into the latest insights on tennis elbow management and prevention, offering invaluable advice for athletes of all levels.

The Science Behind Tennis Elbow BACKHAND TECHNIQUE The mechanics of a backhand tennis stroke can exert higher loading forces on the lateral elbow. Notably, adopting a two-handed backhand technique can alleviate tendon forces.

RACKET GRIP The size of your raquet grip plays a pivotal role. An ill-fitted grip—be it too small or too large—can amplify the strain on forearm extensor tendons.

A proper grip ensures that the player's hand and wrist are in a comfortable and stable position.

Preventing tennis elbow and managing early symptoms are pivotal aspects of injury management. If you detect tenderness or discomfort on the outer side of your elbow, especially after extended tennis sessions, you might be at risk. Reflect on your training volume, incorporate proper warm-up and cool-down stretches, and contemplate the insights mentioned in "The Science Behind Tennis Elbow." Engage with your tennis coach to fine-tune your equipment and backhand stroke technique. Likewise, seek guidance from a physiotherapist or trainer to adopt prevention strategies and targeted strength exercises.

FOLLOW-THROUGH "GRIP-RELEASE" Tennis professionals adeptly employ a "quick grip release" in their followthrough technique, minimizing nearly 90% of impact force on their elbows. Recreational players, less skilled in this technique, achieve only about 62% force reduction, rendering them more susceptible to injury. This accounts for why tennis professionals, even those employing a one-handed backhand, rarely suffer from tennis elbow. ♦ References: Chung, K. C., & Lark, M. E. (2017). Squash

squash is for everyone Empower your squash journey with the right gear. Learn how different squash equipment caters to your skill level.

S

quash has often carried the reputation of being challenging. The ball's refusal to bounce, the seemingly small racquet head, and the difficulty of maneuvering the ball out of corners - we've heard every excuse. Yet, amidst these perceptions, a critical aspect often remains overlooked - the significance of using the correct equipment, including racquets and squash balls. This importance is particularly magnified when it comes to juniors. Guided by the evolving coaching methodology, embracing small steps of improvement and consistent achievements pave the path towards becoming a lifelong Squash enthusiast. At the core of this journey are the right tools. There are 5 squash ball options designed to make your court experience enjoyable and successful right from the start. For our junior players, we provide options like the beginner Red Ball, the intermediate Orange Ball, and the slightly bouncier Green Ball. These choices significantly aid juniors in developing consistent contact skills. For adults, the Blue Dot Squash ball and the Double Yellow Dot balls are the most played. The Blue Dot ball is faster, resulting in a livelier rebound off the back wall. While adult racquets maintain standardization in length and weight, our collection of junior racquets cater to different age groups. Whether you're a Little Squasher or a Squash Star, or a 3-years-old or an older adult, everyone can play and enjoy this wonderful sport. Choosing the right racquet and ball will contribute to your success. Stop by the squash office if you have any questions about equipment or check out The Shoppe for all your squash related needs! Empower your squash journey with the right gear! ♦
