BLAST TO THE PAST Students attend an after school decorating opportunity to win points for their classes and prepare AHS for Super Week and Sadies. By JEREMY DU AND CYNTHIA LIN Staff Writer

Many of us at AHS are familiar with the annual school dances: Homecoming, Spring Fling, and Prom. In actuality, there is another school dance that occurs in place of the Spring Fling dance once every four years—Sadie Hawkins, also known as Sadies. However, this school year has broken this pattern, as Sadies has made a comeback two years early!

NEWS pg. 2 Youtube’s New Policies: With constant content uploaded to the site, moderators call for additional regulations.

ASB ICC President junior Matthew Chen explained that “this year, ASB will be hosting a Sadies with the theme ‘Blast to the Past.’ Essentially, it encompasses all previous decades ranging from the 50’s to the 90’s. Leading up to the dance, ASB will be hosting a Super Week to enthuse students and provide opportunities to show their school spirit.” When asked about why Sadies is occurring earlier than usual this year, he shared that “the previous Sadies generated a lot of excitement and spirit from the whole campus,” leading ASB to host it again.

OPINION pg. 5 Should DACA be preserved?: DACA is a point of contention for many, with solid cases both for and against. YES: “Currently, there are about 800,000 young undocumented immigrants who are in the program...They all have dreams and ambitions like any American kid.” NO: “DACA will bring government benefits and welfare to these immigrants, which places a burden on tax-paying citizens.”

ASB Senior Class Treasurer Stephanie Yen explained similarly that, “Sadies has just been more popular and it has higher attendance than Spring Fling, so we thought that people would enjoy this dance for this year even if we weren’t technically supposed to have it.” The introduction of Super Week to Sadies this year sets it apart from previous AHS Sadies dances. Super Week, a new version of the traditional Spirit Week, is set to occur the week of the dance. It will feature competition between the grade levels, with a point system

to determine the winning class. There are three ways for students to help their class gain points. The first way is to attend decorating sessions for their respective class, where they will work with their peers to personalize the part of the school campus the class was designated. The second way is by participating in lunch spirit activities, where classes can score up to 80 points. Lastly, dressing up for each themed day of Super Week and posting photos on Instagram Stories can allow students to help their class gain additional points. The winning class will gain additional funding for a future bonding event! Sophomore Kitty Chien noted that the “Blast to the Past” dance theme “really speaks to [her] because it’s retro and something different from current societal life. The upcoming Sadies dance is “one of the few opportunities [that she and her friends] can experience at school while having fun.” Junior Sean Ye exclaimed, “I just absolutely love it...The decades theme is a game changer.” Senior Shawn Lin expressed that he enjoyed the themes, as they are “broad enough to provide students with diverse and creative outfits, but also specific enough to have distinction between each costume.” Make the best of your school year by participating in Super Week and attending Sadies! Show off your class pride and join in on the festivities that ASB has to offer. Whether you go alone, with a partner, or with a group of friends, the event is bound to be a lot of fun. jdu@apachepowwow.net clin@apachepowwow.net Photos by JULIA LIN and KAITLYN LIAO
