Dear reader,

It is commonly said that in order to see the things around us more clearly, we must be willing to shift our perspective. In our shared globe of distinct experiences, viewpoints and frames of mind, there are infinite stories to tell and be told. This is why we must constantly put ourselves in the unique position of listener and observer—so that we may understand more about the world we move in, oftentimes blissfully unaware of what we don’t know. Aspiring to achieve this state of understanding, the idea behind this issue was born. More than playing with exposure and color (pg. 30) or using optical illusions to your outfit’s advantage (pg. 34), this magazine’s focus is to shed light on the influential college activists of our time (pg. 44) and provide concrete steps to transform your lens (pg. 36) in the face of injustice.

We sincerely hope that the stories, art and intention put into crafting this project will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

Yet another general truth is that all good things must come to an end. The thing about ends, I’ve realized, is that they don’t always have to be sad.

They can be surprisingly full of contentment, especially when what you’re leaving behind is in more than capable hands. With that, Perspective: Vol. 2, Issue 1 will mark my last issue as Editor-in-Chief of A-Line. The past two years spent ideating, planning, and growing this magazine alongside the best of the best have been exhilarating. Not only has this organization managed to set itself apart in its earliest of stages, but it has also become an exciting medium for like minded creators to connect and experience the particular joy that is almost exclusively associated with losing oneself in a work of passion. I am so incredibly proud of what we have started here. I am so proud of our dedicated leaders, some of whom are saying goodbye to this journey with me. I am especially proud of those few that have been there since the very first meeting. No one really knew what would happen, but everyone contributed a part of themselves that made this endeavor suddenly possible.

Thank you for believing in a vision that, in actuality, would not have been fully understood or accomplished without each of your exceptional perspectives.

What’s the closest thing to real magic?

Ivory: A-line is always overflowing with creativity. I will miss having such an amazing Design Team and exploring the diversity of everyone’s talents.

Emma: Summertime with the car windows down jamming to Coldplay, cold brew in hand. Or the movie Soul. I can’t decide.

Chloe: The process of working alongside my best friends to create the semesterly print issues!

Kortnie: I’ll miss it all! The creative outlet, socials, but mostly, I’ll miss the sisterhood aspect of it all.

Sadie: Finally falling in love with yourself.

Once you embrace who you are fully, everything else seems to fall into place.

tepping into spring 2021, we are embarking on the one-year anniversary of what unexpectedly became a global pandemic. Months were spent inside as the sun shone on without us— at least when we weren’t on our daily mask-adorned walks. As we begin to seek normalcy, everyone is wondering what pair of shades to flaunt while we become comfortable spending more time in the real world. Luckily, social media never slowed down so there are plenty of looks trending for us to choose from. Whatever ideal frame you are aiming to sport throughout the next year, there is virtually no shortage of the variety of glasses available for the brighter days ahead.

Classic Cat Eye Consistently popular for decades, one cannot go wrong with the classic cat eye. Known for its pointed tip, this type has been a go-to in fashion by being both retro and chic. Whether you’re aiming for a ‘50s dinerinspired vibe or just have an understanding of why the hype for this shape has never died, you’ll easily be the babe at the sock hop with this timeless pick.

Chunky Rectangular With simplicity being key, these glasses pair well with neutral tones such as ivory, steel black, or tortoise shell. Though the chunky rectangular style can seem beyond your comfort zone, the angular lines help create a flattering futuristic appeal. Squared Aviator Squared aviators have made a major comeback this season on social media, and we can see why.

‘70s Round There are countless attributions from the ‘70s that are still relevant in the world of fashion today. From corduroy pants to curtain bangs, chunky boots to western details: the age of groove can be held responsible for many of our dearest trends. Though we love all things ‘70s, an all-time favorite has to be the infamous round sunnies. The gold, round trim against the deep, dark lens epitomizes the vintage look. So, whenever you’re in the mood to blare The Stones or Fleetwood Mac, try throwing on a pair of these sunglasses. Trust us, the vibes are immaculate.

Rimless Y2K It is no news that one of the most prominent fashion trends to resurface within the last year is inspired by the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Y2K fashion is fun, fresh, daring, and incredibly trendy. From animal prints to lacking a specific color theme, this era of fashion allows you to be fearless in your styling. To truly encompass Y2K fashion, you must not forget one crucial element: rimless sunglasses.

In the age of reinvention, it makes sense that we’re constantly moving through a myriad of phases. The world around us is forever changing, and it pushes us to follow the same path of constant transformation.

However, moving forward for the sole purpose of not being left behind is misguided. This lack of direction will lead you into a hall of mirrors, struggling to distinguish the many undefined versions of yourself.

To purposefully step into our future, we have to understand why our past no longer suits us. Resigning to the monotony of repetition leaves you unaware of the opportunities that lie just outside your daily routine. You don’t know how small spaces are until you’ve outgrown them, and looking at yourself and your past with a fresh perspective can reveal the invisible walls that confine your potential. Break them down with intention. Remove the restraints of familiarity in pursuit of a future that cannot be contained.

Being given a predetermined path straight to our destiny would be too easy. Luckily, we each have a guide for when the roads diverge into the unknown: our past selves. Just as gut feelings are guardian angels, past experiences are your North Star. Every last-minute decision, missed train, and second chance has led you to stand where you are.

Without a doubt, they can help you determine where to go next.

While our pasts have built us into who we are and who we’re bound to become, that doesn’t mean they were composed without fault. Everyone has moments decorated in regret that—though already solidified in their history—they would jump at the chance to redo. Ask yourself what mistakes you made in your past that you can do differently today. Did the fear of rejection hold you back from applying for a position you dreamed of ? Did a streak of recklessness lead you to a dead end? Carry those learning experiences with you, let them help you through a fork in the road, and become the person your past self didn’t have the clarity to be.

Every journey takes a toll, even one of self-discovery. When each step feels sluggish, and it’s impossible to tell if you’re even moving forward, turn around. Your past is the best gauge of your progress, and it’ll always be there to remind you of how far you’ve come. The remnants of hills that seemed too steep to climb and glass from ceilings you thought were too solid to be broken will sit behind in the distance as trophies of every triumph.

So, when you’re unsure of what lies ahead, don’t be afraid to look back. Your past, present, and future will prosper because of it.

W

e all have things that we consider to be extremely important to us. Careers, family, and school all prove to keep us busy in our day-to-day lives. Because each of these requires ongoing devotion of our time and effort, finding the perfect way to balance everything can be difficult. So, how do we keep from placing one thing at the forefront of our lives without losing focus of all our other responsibilities?

College students may be the demographic that struggles with this issue the most. Staying on top of classes is hard enough, but when factoring in maintaining a healthy social life and possibly a job, the load becomes heavy— and fast. It is worth noting that this season of a young adult’s life is often where they explore new relationships, which can bring on even more of a time commitment.

Sometimes the easiest way to help get your priorities straight is to take a break. Texas A&M student Madison Galbreath has certainly felt the pressures of a full schedule and expresses the struggles of trying to juggle work and student life.

“I got a job for the first time in college last semester,” said Galbreath. “I focused so much on trying to be good at my job and make money that I totally put school on the back burner. The first eight weeks of my fall semester, my grades were the worst they had been in my college career.”

Unfortunately, this is the reality for many students who have to work to pay their way through school.

Research shows that working only 20 hours a week is associated with lower grades, which explains why many working students often feel this tug-of-war between needing to make ends meet and excel in classes.

“When you’re too close to the grindstone, you lose perspective.” - Robert Capa Galbreath knew she couldn’t let her grades suffer by becoming too wrapped up in her job and realized what she needed to do to put her academic life back in order.

“I had to take two weeks off [from work] just to get my school grind back on,” said Galbreath. “It took me an extra two weeks to get into the groove of figuring out how to manage [school and work]. I realized I couldn’t spread myself too thin because if I did, I’d have to give one or the other up to the point of no return.”

Any college student can easily fall into situations like these. When one aspect of our lives begins to take precedence, we forget about all of the other things and end up falling short in those lessprioritized areas. It is imperative to switch up your perspective and try to focus on the bigger picture.

Amanda Schmiediche, another student at Texas A&M, discussed how her frame of mind was thrown off when she was entering into a new relationship during the most pivotal time of her life.

“My freshman year of college, I met this guy and shortly after, we started dating,” said Schmiediche.

“He was my only friend, his friends were my friends and they were who I always hung out with. I lived with roommates at this point, but my relationship was all I had—it was what I clung to.”

New romantic partners are one of the most common ways to lose touch with yourself; it can feel like your whole world revolves around that person. Sometimes, we come to the realization early on that we need to

realign our outlook. Other times, it takes the relationship ending to recognize where things went wrong.

“Once we ended, I realized all my friends had been taken away from me,” said Schmiediche. “I just had my roommates, which I’m super thankful for, since they’re some of my best friends now. I should’ve focused more on those other relationships around me rather than just on him and his friends.”

When developing a new relationship, it is common to find yourself feeling detached in other aspects of life.

Experiences that are hard for us to go through can be even more confusing to process when we are still struggling to see the big picture. Shocking, unexpected events in life typically shake our perspectives the most—going through a breakup or losing a loved one, for instance, is no small feat. Trying to see the good in the curveball is difficult, but focusing your eyes on the things and people you value most will help you to see why these events may be of benefit in the future. Ask yourself: “What did I learn from this? Do I now know how to prevent this from happening again? How can I help others who are going through this same thing?”

Thinking in a future-oriented way can help build a positive, more intentional mindset. Becoming too intertwined with any single part of your world will not be beneficial in the same way, as it creates a false perspective of what life is. Whether it’s work, school, friends, or family, keep your mind open and think about the grand scheme of it all. A

s we finally approach summer days, it’s time to start scoping out the next hot trends. Fall and winter were a flourish of monochromatic neutrals.

Brown was all the rage, from camel to beige. While it was creatively fulfilling to play around with a “drab” color, trends come and go. This season is the ultimate time for outlandishly bold looks, so be ready to push yourself outside of your comfort zone (like, really far).

SHEER TOPS Exciting news: a see-through shirt is no longer a middle school wardrobe nightmare, but now a conscious choice.

Hold the applause. Sheer blouses and dresses offer a sensual twist on a timeless look. A few ways you can test this trend include wearing them over your favorite lacy bralette or as a bottom layer for vests, fitted dresses, and corsets.

The idea of rules existing for casual wear is an outdated lie, yet it is one that we have all believed at one point or another. We were taught that there were clothes deemed acceptable for going to the store and others that were decidedly not. Walking the thin line of “not sloppy, but not nightclub” was exhausting, and frankly—boring.

CLINGY MESH

To the surprise of absolutely no one, corsets are the number one spring staple.

After the release of Bridgerton (a Netflix show set in early 19th-century England, complete with witty dialogue and plenty of people to swoon over), we were all yearning for a bit of regency flair in our lives. Enter: corsets, stage left. These lingerie tops have endless variations of texture, opacity, colors, patterns, and appliques. To put it simply, they are fitting for your every curve and aesthetic.

Clingy mesh is the antidote to feeling covered up with our beloved quarantineera sweat-sets and loungewear. Mesh (think light knitwear, but more porous) proves that slinky can, in fact, be classy.

FEATHERS An exciting way to add that “wow” factor to your outfit is to play with texture.

Reminiscent of the teddy coat craze from 2019, feathers are about to be huge. They have that gaudy appeal that reminds us of Mardi Gras, the ballet, and Honk! the musical. Why leave all of the fun to bridal and costume? Make feathers casual again.

COLOR PAIRINGS Matching colors are boring and overdone.

Not only has the style overextended its stay in the fashion realm, but it begs for an upgrade. Now more than ever, unimagined color combinations are taking the runway by storm—pairings of olive and lavender are one of many to become widely adored.

A trick to find colors that will work well together is to match intensities (pastels with pastels, brights with brights).

Any fashion show review will tell you that not everyone will be too keen on an interesting outfit, but everyone can agree on a dull one. Make it a personal goal to get creative with your style and throw in some flashier trends. Besides, the word on the street is that people who wear “weird” clothes have way more fun.

hile the rest of us sat inside and learned TikTok dances throughout quarantine last year, Taylor Swift casually dropped two award-winning albums—and rightfully so. Now that we have listened to Folklore and Evermore, we are more aware than ever of the talent in Swift’s ability to story-tell, and of her strength in amplifying the controversial voices exiled from Hollywood.

No stranger to feuds, Taylor Swift has been in numerous ongoing battles with A-List celebrities, including those who are more behind-the-scenes in the music industry. As we’ve seen previously in 2017 with the iconic loss of her “good girl” status and receipt-filled album Reputation, Swift is notorious for comebacks and she is unafraid to call out traitorous acts in the most clever analogies.

The old Taylor has been dead for some time now but once more, she has found herself in a dispute that’s causing major division in the music world.

One of her greatest nemeses today is Scooter Braun, an American music manager well-acquainted with many of our most beloved artists. In 2019, Braun acquired Big Machine Records, Swift’s previous recording label—which includes all of her records over the past 15 years—for a whopping $300 million.

Swift was heavily impacted by this transaction, as the rights to six of her multi-platinum albums were decidedly locked away from her ownership and Braun even going as far as to refuse her requests.

Through a course of lengthy Instagram posts and emotional tweets, Taylor Swift gained traction across the globe. From celebrity friends and fans rallying by her side to haters declaring it an overused tactic that the singer would find drama anywhere she went, her statement revealing the truth of the story spread like wildfire. The entire situation became a double-edged sword, cutting Swift deeply enough to cause her to retreat from the light for the following months until she tactfully broke the internet last July.

Folklore was released July 24, 2020 after being announced just days before. The album had all the elements of eminent work: dreamy story-telling, cottagecore imagery, and major dissing. While the album itself is chock-full of fictional scenarios we dare to vicariously live through, there are also deeper, more painful messages throughout the album to take note of. One thing that all the implied enemies Taylor wrote about have in common: they’ve tried to silence her. Swift has been very adamant about not letting intimidation stop her from speaking her truth and had no intention of shying away from calling out Scooter, along with other artists from her stained past. From one of the songs on the album, “Mad Woman,” the lyrics hauntingly describe how Swift had the last 15 years of hard work stripped from her name while being told to

accept it silently. She explains in the lyrics, “What did you think I’d say to that? Does a scorpion sting when fighting back? ” that this enemy treated her response like an offense as if she was the one to be blamed.

Refusing to be gaslighted for fighting back, Swift instead gave an inside look on her own perspective of the very public fallout, unapologetically filled with what she considers “female rage.” Folklore had our backs all throughout the serene months of summer and fall. Then, in typical sneaky Taylor fashion, she did it again. When no one was suspecting it, Swift took the world by storm in mid-December by releasing Evermore, the sister album to Folklore.

Analyzing both of these albums, it is safe to say they are extremely different from anything she’s produced before. Raw, heartbreaking, unfiltered lyrics poured from each song as Swift opened up about the wounds and scars she’s received from negligence in the industry. Other artists have written about the reality of the music world, but some say nothing has ever quite been as gritty or pushed back harder than the songs Swift dedicated to her adult bullies.

There aren’t too many artists out there brave enough to not only push back but persevere from their battles like Swift has gracefully done time and time again.

Breaking barriers, Taylor Swift began her career as America’s sweetheart writing songs on young, fantasy love in her bedroom, to becoming a feminist heroine in the music industry. It is important to see past the pettiness of celebrity feuds and uncover the greater distress that female artists frequently face in the limelight. By refusing to be silenced over whatever threats were thrown, clarity has been shed on the entire situation—that of which we may had never known if Swift decided to let them win.

Through daring to defend herself, Swift gave all women inspiring proof that fighting for yourself is worth it, your perspective is both necessary and valued, and that pain is never forevermore. On March 14, 2021, Taylor Swift won the Grammy award for Album of the Year. This win not only made Grammy history for Swift becoming the first female artist to join the 3-peat club for the Artist of the Year award, but also signaled the sweetest form of revenge: success. If you’re going for vengeance, you might as well make history doing so. I

n the new decade, labels in all facets of society are quickly becoming ideas of the past. With a generation that is challenging social structures regarding gender, sexuality, and philosophy, personal identity has taken a stronghold on what we prioritize today and the ways in which we choose to define it. However, when it comes to fashion and clothing, labels are often less likely to adjust.

Although there has been increasing development in fashion regarding size representation, the narrative that is portrayed when it comes to size range tends to skew towards two different ends of a nuanced spectrum. Enter TikTok: the app that has found its way into our daily lives, bringing with it redefined metrics of what trends can become and who may participate in them. No interest is too specific when it comes to TikTok. In fact, it is as adaptable as the end-user needs it to be. With the numerous identities that are portrayed on the app, representation is a given. This has been especially true in the era of the mid-size movement.

What exactly is a “mid-size” body? According to Anushka Moore, a primary figure in the movement, it is “not petite, but not plus-sized.” In numerical terms, this ranges from sizes 8-16. The average American woman wears a size 14, a figure taken from a study conducted by the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education.

Considering the everyday consumer will likely fall into a mid-size category, why have brands historically limited their catalog aesthetic to straight-size portrayals? Aside from social norms, factors like “fatphobia” and idealism play a role in what is deemed acceptable when it comes to the clothes we wear.

TikTok’s role in furthering body positivity messaging has been in its creation of what is referred to as “midsize TikTok.” In other terms, the app has created a space for numerous individuals to see themselves represented in the fashion conversation. This has manifested itself by giving a platform to style accounts that normalize everyday bodies by sharing realistic conversations about beauty standards. The mid-size hashtag alone has attracted over 500 million views.

Creators on TikTok share content that facilitates conversations surrounding their personal experiences.

Examples of this include topics that cover how to participate in any trend and make it your own, tips for highlighting your best features, learning to love your body as it is, and shedding light on media that perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards. The growth of this side of TikTok has introduced individuals that may not have known how to define themselves in the fashion realm to a world that embraces their bodies without calling for them to change.

The movement is reclaiming and embracing the power of what it means to be average. Companies like Old Navy, American Eagle, and Girlfriend Collective are redefining what size range should look like in a modern brand. Increasing options in wide-ranging sizes have made way for trends curated around everyday bodies to make an impact on the fashion world at large.

Layered looks are also in high demand at this moment in fashion. Anything varying from tank tops over turtlenecks, to fishnets under ripped jeans has become a staple in mid-size styling.

This is prevalent in the way trends emerging for all body types are tackling classic stylings. The approach is simple: it is up to you. Whether it’s a corset or a workout set that highlights your given features, the underlying—and perhaps most vital—message is to unapologetically style clothing to your advantage.

When it comes to brands that are embracing this movement, the most telling sign in determining their commitment is their campaigning. American Eagle and its sub-brand Aerie have drastically shifted their messaging both in-store and online. Their website

As seen in numerous movements of the modern age, social media is a key factor in the direction our culture shifts towards. This is achieved through an influx of information, accessibility, and influence.

Household names and artists have a vastly different ability to affect change than they did 20 years ago.

Aside from celebrities we see on screen, social media moguls also have the opportunity to share messaging that garners great impact. Women like Britney Vest, Remi Bader, and Holly Ah-Thion are using platforms like Instagram and TikTok to embrace their bodies, teach others to do the same, and further the message relayed in the movement. Celebrity personalities like Mindy Kaling, America Ferrera, and Kat Dennings are a few of many using their platforms to represent

regular bodies in Hollywood, embracing their own skin and inspiring their followers to do the same.

An example worth noting is found in Megan Thee Stallion. Her mastery of lyricism and rhythm has earned her status and praise in the music world. Aside from Megan’s musical genius, she is also changing the way we perceive our bodies. The portrayal of a curvy woman that is unapologetic about what she wears and how she wears it is shattering all of the standards popular culture has promoted in the past. Influential figures like Megan are playing a critical role in who we see in the limelight and the ways we see ourselves represented in those spaces.

With all of this talk about representation and inclusion, you may find yourself wondering, “Why does it matter so much anyway?” The media we consume every day influences the stories we believe about ourselves and those around us. When we see someone that we can relate to on a larger scale, it bolsters the validity of our perspective. It tells us that we matter, the way we exist in the world matters, and our lived experiences are worthy of recognition.

In an industry like fashion, which is notoriously exclusive and has historically perpetuated harmful stereotypes and expectations, an increased accountability of the role it plays in our society is transformative. The call to action is refreshing the page on a size-obsessed culture. The rise of midsize is shining the spotlight on bodies that have traditionally been left out of the fashion conversation.

Messaging surrounding clothing is no longer about how we fit into the narrative, but about how brands, trends, and styles play a role in our lives. Because the mid-size movement involves reshaping the way we think about fashion, it is inherently transforming the way we look at ourselves. Whether it’s what we decide to wear, how we decide to wear it, or what we see when we look in the mirror, this movement is taking back the power and putting it in the hands of real people.

Gone are the days when retail campaigns felt like looking into a fabricated reality—real bodies demand real representation. A more authentic future is on the horizon, and the view is as above average as it gets.

ow many times have you caught yourself in front of a mirror, picking yourself to pieces over your appearance? Probably one too many. The idea of reaching a final form of self-acceptance can be a daunting endeavor, but there are tangible ways to help you feel more confident in your own skin that you are probably overlooking. A good amount of power lies in how you dress. Beginning to artfully accentuate your features is surprisingly well within reach. The key is to decide what you want to portray outwardly and take advantage of optical illusions to highlight your best traits.

Boost Your Body Type It is naive to believe that everyone’s body could be categorized into one of a handful of specific shapes like pear, apple, and athletic, but having a general idea of where you fit can be a good place to start when trying new styles. There are tons of body type quizzes to take online; for example, Stitchfix.com offers a body calculator that requires only a tape measure. When you get your results, you can see which description of each body type fits yours. For instance, pearshaped bodies have a wider waist than bust, whereas athletic bodies have relatively equal shoulder and hip measurements. Another idea is to follow more people who share your body type when looking for fashion inspiration so you can realistically see what might also flatter you in your wardrobe.

here are many times in life where we may ask ourselves, “What is my purpose?” Many people will spend their days searching and aching to find the answer to this question, but few will come up with an answer.

This is especially true when humanity is plagued by the gross magnitude of the social, political, and racial injustices that are abundant in the United States at this time. The latter has brought about a strong urgency for self-awareness. Becoming more conscious of one’s own actions aids in recognizing how to handle both inner and outer conflicts in a healthy manner. To begin considering the effort it takes to change in terms of deconstructing and rebuilding one’s lens, there needs to be a basic understanding of what a lens and frame are.

WHAT IS YOUR LENS? WHAT IS YOUR FRAME? Your lens can be easily described as the way that you view yourself, others, and the rest of the world. It can be compared to the way that a photographer would view their muse through a camera lens. They can see only what they focus the camera on—nothing more, nothing less. This can become a problem when people tend to focus on one part of a story or rely solely on one source for their information. If you only prioritize one segment of the issue, you tend to only think about one solution. Your frame is everything that makes up those views. Your upbringing, socio-economic status, religion, sexuality, gender, and just about every aspect of your life builds your frame. To say that the way you were raised has no effect on the way you look at certain things is simply a fallacy. Any little piece of information that makes up who you are contributes to why you see things either differently or exactly the same as other people.

To further discuss the ways in which transforming and restoring one’s lens is beneficial to the world that we currently live in, I interviewed a former mentor/ teacher of mine, Ashley Gibson. She has done extensive research on the practices associated with changing one’s lens and has continued the work within and beyond the classroom. Ashley Gibson is a veteran K-12 educator in Houston TX and a doctoral candidate at Baylor University. She is currently serving at a Houston Charter school as a culture and curriculum specialist where she serves grades K-8. She has a passion for

writing about teacher’s critical consciousness and is a restorative practice facilitator. She enjoys writing, reading, playing with her cats Mandy and James Baldwin, and teaching Zumba classes at the local gyms.

Do you believe that people, especially people that hold incredibly damaging views, can change?

I do. In fact, I truly have hope that they can. However, it comes with incredible work. The person has to be a willing participant in their own growth. They must examine themselves and locate where their beliefs have harmed and been violent against others. It takes decentering self, and identity, to see the stories of others as valid and normative. Whiteness always centers itself...I believe we live in a society that caters to whiteness as a construct—so even Black, Indigenous, and People of color tend to placate whiteness and seek to soothe whiteness. And that is what white folx are used to so in the case of [white folx] who hold damaging, violent views, they literally have to face themselves without expecting others to make them comfortable in that moment. As a restorative facilitator, I have worked with white students and adults and I usually have to encourage them to lean into discomfort. Many never get past it. I have had students drop my class, and adults stop associating with me. On the contrary, I have also known folx to turn it around and grow closer to allyship.

What is the first step to someone changing their perspective/lens?

The first step is self-examination. This requires some inquiry going on inside such as “Who am I?” and “Where do I come from?” There has to be some truthtelling: “I am a Black light-skinned woman. I benefit from light-skinned privilege in the Black community.”

That is my personal example that I give for this. We have to come to understand our intersectional identities. It is self-awareness that leads to critical consciousness; understanding my own lens before I try to understand or dictate the validity of someone else’s world.

What do you think is the number one reason for why people hold certain views against marginalized groups?

I think the number one reason is fear. People fear what they do not understand; cognitive dissonance also 37

reinforces that fear. In the case of white supremacy, it is about maintaining that supremacy, whether overt or subtle; consciously or subconsciously. Part of it too, is that we do not equip our youth or one another with the ability to discuss these things, so there is also a lack of stamina and mental capacity to even begin to talk about it. Therefore, they continue to reinforce violence instead of addressing it and the views are thus strengthened.

With having experience in the Texas education system, what do you think are some failings when it comes to shaping our youth’s perspective on political, social, and cultural issues?

An unwillingness to truly reckon with American history. Texas is lagging far behind the rest of the modern world when it comes to fully owning and addressing the truth. The Texas education system infuriates me and empowers me at the same time. The more obstinate Texas education becomes, the harder I am motivated to fight and teach kids the truth. Many individuals are so scared to address political, social, and cultural issues, and it’s a foundationally oppressive system to try and get around, especially when teachers cannot unionize against it. I think History and English teachers have some of the most powerful access to kids, but the history we teach leaves out BIPOC voices and stories. Foundationally it goes back to the narrative we tell ourselves about ourselves, and if that story is a perpetual lie, the system continues to uphold itself.

How can people who have the background/ knowledge regarding restorative practices help to implement these teachings in their everyday life?

I think anyone who knows anything about restorative work can practice active listening and decentering self so that the stories of others can be valued. It is a daily habit of mind and practice. Being more inclusive is part of it, and being mindful that exclusion happens in subtle ways is also beneficial. Not being afraid to be corrected and to grow is also another way forward.

What is the difference between performative activism & true allyship?

Someone who is performative is reacting to a moment instead of joining and committing to a movement. They want to have the appearance of “wokeness” without doing the work.

It’s all book clubs, memes, and no substantive actions behind that. I also think people quit too early because they get fatigued. This is another example of lacking the stamina for change. True allies are busy doing the work and in solidarity with others. It’s not a show, it’s a daily reality. Every ally and co-conspirator, Dr. Bettina Love, refers to them as a starting point where they had limiting views and didn’t know any better. We are all growing in consciousness. The true Ally or co-conspirator never stops that process of growth, while the performative activist believes they have arrived prematurely.

Finally, what is a challenge or final thought that you propose to people looking to change their perspective, especially when it comes to today’s political/social climate?

I challenge people to get out of their own way and see that other humans are just as valid and valuable as they are. Once you can see someone else’s humanity, anything is possible.

Great and beautiful change is possible. Love is possible.

SIX WAYS TO CHANGE YOUR LENS As previously discussed, change is not easy. If it were easy, the world would be a much simpler place and would not be beset with so much strife and conflicting ideals. The first step to altering your lens is to establish your perspective. You cannot begin to change directions if you are unsure of where you are headed.

1. Establish perspective & expose your presumptions In order to change, you have to want to change. This means recognizing the views you carry and how those opinions can harm/hinder another person or group. This is the hardest part in changing your lens and adapting your perspective of the world around you. Realistically, no one wants to state that they have some views that are morally wrong. Most people want to believe that the way that they think is just.

2. Understand intersectionality Intersectionality, a term coined by Audre Lorde, is the recognition that categories of difference (sometimes referred to as axes of identity), including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender, religion/creed, age, etc., are all linked. Identity is multi-dimensional and there is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we as humans are not single-issue beings. There are institutional systems in place that hold certain marginalized groups behind the finish line, and in some cases, so far back in the race that they cannot even envision what the track looks like.

3. Realize when you are practicing apathy and know when empathy is needed Apathy is the lack of emotion, interest, and concern. It is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions, especially for others. People practice apathy by ignoring their core acknowledgement of what is right and wrong. People become silent and emotionless to the world around them and the social/political issues that are present. They laugh at the pain and suffering they witness in order to remain apathetic and to shut out the responsibility that we each carry to recognize the troubles other people face. Empathy, on the other hand, is acknowledgement, even when you cannot understand what another person is experiencing. You feel for them and have a base understanding of the fact that they are going through something that is hurting them.

4. Know the difference between solidarity and charity Charity tends to be the voluntary act of giving, typically in the form of money, to those in need. Solidarity is the union or fellowship amongst a group of people arising from common responsibilities and interests.

Solidarity seeks to mutually support others, not simply hand out resources. Building “bottom-up” structures of cooperation can be more important than relying on the state or wealthy philanthropists to address needs.

This allows for horizontal networks to flow in both directions and sustain the life of a community. Although money and resources from the government go a long way in helping people/groups, it is not the end all, be all that will fix everything like most people tend to think.

5. Do your research and decenter yourself It is not the job of the minority/marginalized group to educate the masses on what they are experiencing. It is a personal responsibility to decenter or remove yourself from your primary focus and think about what the other person/group could be dealing with. Not every issue or problem in the world is going to automatically affect you, but that does not mean that you are not affecting the outcome of that issue by remaining silent. Some sources to watch/read that can spur your research are: This Is Water by David Foster Wallace and The Danger of A Single Story by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

6. The sixth and final step—arguably one of the most difficult once you’ve gone through the process of transforming your lens—is to remain equipped and ready to make changes again when necessary.

Try to avoid becoming too complacent in your efforts to remain an ally; if this does happen, it hinders the process. The effort to be self-aware is never over. There is alway room for improvement and growth.

HOW DO I ENACT AND MODEL THESE CHANGES? If we are not careful, we can make other people’s stories feel like our own. We then decide we know what they need. Those presumptions can be very dangerous and can cause service projects and good intentions to go very wrong. You cannot go into a place of helping another person with the intent to make yourself a savior. The only way to uplift others is to make them feel as though they are their own heroes.

As a final parting challenge, every reader that has made it this far should write out ten assumptions that they have about the world and people around them. We then challenge you to research the validity behind those assumptions and try to find sources that are as unbiased as possible. Utilize scholarly articles, read from different perspectives, and ask people around you that may have different ideals. If you do not change your mind on at least seven of those assumptions, begin again and research some more. We all have to make the conscious effort to see things from a different lens than the one that we focus on normally, and challenging ourselves is the best way to start doing so.

he word “undertone” is thrown around a lot in the beauty world. If you’re scratching your head trying to figure out what the word even means, you aren’t alone. Even though undertones and skin tones bear similarities, there’s a distinct difference between the two: your skin tone is your overall complexion that can easily change color depending on the season, while your undertone is the subtle shade underneath that remains unchanged.

First, let’s unpack what exactly the different undertones are. Skin tones can range from very dark to fair, but there are three main undertones that you’ll hear makeup artists refer to: warm, cool, and neutral. A warm undertone is typically peachy or golden, while a cooler tone has more of a blue, pink, or red tint. A neutral undertone will be a mix of these warmer and cooler shades. If you’re wondering why this even matters, you’ll find that undertones make the biggest difference in what will make—or break—your look. If you want to find out what undertone you are, you can follow some simple tricks that makeup artists swear by.

If you hold a white piece of paper to your face and find that your skin seems rosier, you have a cool undertone. If your face is on the yellow side, you’re warmtoned. Not exactly identifying with either means you’re neutral.

Check the veins in your wrist or neck—if they seem blue, you’re cool-toned, but if your veins are green, then you’re warm-toned.

If you’re still unsure and want a sure way to find your undertone, use a shade-finder chart, either on the Internet or at your local beauty store. This tool will not only be able to properly match your skin tone, but also the specific undertone that suits you best.

Now that you’ve found your right undertone, what’s next? Your undertone is so important because it tells you which color palettes you should lean towards— and stay away from—in your beauty routine.

First, let’s look at cooler undertones: to avoid mismatched foundation, pick a color with slight pink tones as opposed to yellow, which can clash with your natural undertone. For a daytime look, turn to rosy blush, pale eyeshadow, and a pink lip, which can enhance your skin tone by making it appear subtly warmer. On a night out, you can rock a berry or burgundy pout and metallic jewel tones for eyeshadow and eyeliner, such as deep blues, magentas, and greens.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, those with warm undertones should turn to a foundation with a slight yellow tint, and keep their blush and bronzer in the same hues of [bronze] or rust. ach of us stems from a unique background that leads to valuable perspectives in society.

College students, who are only just finding their voices but often refrain from raising them, want to share their points of view. To give context, decisions are often made for this demographic by people who are far removed from the experience.

However, some students are paving the way to being seen and heard.

Texas A&M University, one of the largest universities in the United States, has many voices eager to be listened to. These students have found different ways to uplift their communities while being vocal about their own experiences.

Alexia Hernandez’s fight for representation Alexia Hernandez’s schedule is spread thin. She is a student senator for the College of Liberal Arts, an external associate for the Hispanic President’s Council, and a co-chair for the Democratic Socialists Society at Texas A&M. This on top of her classes makes her a busy woman, but she still finds time to fight for representation at Texas A&M that better resembles the population of Texas.

The U.S. Census shows that the Texas population is about 40% Hispanic and 12% Black. At Texas A&M, only 23% of students are Hispanic, and a mere 3% of students are Black, according to student demographics. Hernandez wants to see this change.

“I wish that A&M was more representative of the state of Texas,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez has experience fighting for representation. As a junior, she worked on the campaign for U.S. Representative Lucy McBath.

Her district, the 6th district in Georgia, was rated one of the top five most competitive races in the

United States by FiveThirtyEight. Hernandez has taken all the lessons she learned from McBath’s congressional race and applied them to the Texas A&M student body elections.

In her role with the Hispanic President’s Council, Hernandez worked on the campaigns of diverse students. She provided them with advice on their outreach and marketing. In the 2021 Texas A&M student body election, Hernandez had a 100% success rate in getting her candidates elected.

Hernandez does this work because she believes in the future of A&M, and she believes that these students are a part of it.

“Progress is slow, but we can’t stop now,” Hernandez said. “We have to keep pushing every single year, every single student that goes to this university.

Even that little impact that you leave on the university... it all builds over time.”

How Daniel Cheng is bridging the political divide China is experiencing a great tragedy: the Uyghur Muslim genocide. This complex issue may seem foreign to many American college students, but Daniel Cheng brought it home for Aggies when he hosted a roundtable with Texas A&M New Liberals, Texas A&M College Republicans, and Aggie Democrats.

“We basically got all these people from different sides of the political spectrum to talk about confronting these authoritarian threats, and within that presentation, I talked about human rights issues.”

Cheng organized this event as president of the Athenai Institute’s Texas chapter. The Athenai Institute is a national bipartisan student nonprofit

that aims to educate students on authoritarianism and other international issues of diplomacy. Cheng was selected by the national leadership to head the Texas chapter because he demonstrated great interest and knowledge in the matters the Athenai Institute specializes in—most importantly, the fight for a democracy.

“By hosting that event, we basically wanted to build this bipartisan consensus so that people don’t look at bipartisan issues as something only Democrats or only Republicans should care about, but rather something everyone should care about,” Cheng said.

Through his passion for working towards a world with no more genocide, Cheng was able to unite these groups against a common enemy.

“When you put a bunch of Democrats and Republicans together to talk about politics, it can get kind of messy,” Cheng said. “But instead of that happening, we united on a common issue.”

Qynetta Caston on living and leading history As rubber bullets and tear gas rained down, Qynetta Caston and her friends stood strong. They knew what they believed in, and they weren’t backing down. Although they were treated like criminals, the crowd was there to protest injustice.

world, Caston did not hear any rumblings in Brazos County. So, she decided to make some noise.

“I wanted to make sure that the Aggies of color on campus felt like they had a voice,” Caston said.

As director of the Black Student Alliance, Caston was among the organizers of the protest against the Lawrence Sullivan Ross statue that sits prominently in the center of campus. The revered statue is of a former Texas A&M President and Civil War Confederate general. The appropriateness of its place on campus has long been questioned.

“That statue, to me and to my ancestors, represents a lot of hate towards African Americans,” Caston said.

As graduation approaches, Caston is turning her focus to the future. She will serve as a teacher in low-income communities with Teach for America because she wants to help people who are growing up as she did. After her stint with Teach for America, Caston wants to earn her law degree and go into criminal defense, specifically juvenile cases.

“What drives me now is thinking about the future generations,” Caston said. “I have a one-year-old niece who I constantly think about. I think about her future college experience and career and if she’s going to experience any racism because she is Black.”

“What I felt at that protest felt similar to what my ancestors felt when they were protesting in the Civil Rights Movement,” Caston said.

When she returned from protesting in her hometown, Dallas, Caston knew she had to make a change in College Station. Although the Black Lives Matter movement was spreading across the

t’s time for us to be bold and uplift other women, putting weight in the step of empowering manifestos around the globe and demystifying the f-word. Though “feminism” is still a term that needs to be reclaimed, its roots lie in the desire for fairness and equal rights. It is an ongoing fight.

Championing women means working towards a reality in which women and girls can freely pursue their dreams and career goals without being held at a disadvantage while doing so. But what does that look like in today’s society? How far away are we from shattering that glass ceiling?

Famous proponents of women’s rights today, Kamala Harris, Amanda Gorman, and Malala Yousafzai, would argue that we are closer than ever. These women have excelled in areas such as art and politics, and have overcome tremendous

odds to get to where they are today. Not only have they upheld the image of strength and independence, but they serve as an example to younger women and their untapped potential.

Kamala Harris is no stranger to the world. Since announcing her candidacy as the first Black, SouthAsian, female Vice President of the United States, Harris has shattered several glass ceilings. In her vice presidential debate, not only was her presence on stage impactful, but her memorable moments also showed girls how to take command, claim their power, and stand their ground. When Vice President Mike Pence spoke over Senator Harris during the debate, Harris calmly responded, “Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking.” Her concise, yet profound response went viral among girls and women on social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter, displaying to young girls watching that you don’t have to stay silent when someone interrupts you—your voice deserves to be heard.

One day after the 2021 Presidential inauguration, 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman was at the forefront of headlines when she read her poem, “The Hill We Climb” to the nation. The youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, Gorman left the nation speechless as she delivered her poem in perfect prose and expressive diction. Her poem successfully called attention to healing and uniting as a nation without neglecting the harsh truths witnessed from the Capitol Hill riots. As a child, Amanda took a longer time to learn to read than her peers. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson

Cooper, the poet explained that even from a young age, writing and reciting poetry was her own version of speech therapy. Even so, her speech impediment followed her to Harvard University and soon after she became the first ever National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017, exemplifying grace in voicing hard truths and coming up triumphant in the face of adversity to young girls everywhere.

The youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize is Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist who was shot and almost killed by the Taliban, an Islamic fundamentalist movement, for fighting for women’s rights to education. Now a household name, Malala continues her activism through the Malala Fund by funding education projects internationally, partnering with global leaders and local advocates, and pioneering innovative strategies to empower young women. She pledges to keep fighting until every single girl can go to school.

Malala’s passion and intelligence in advocating for women is widespread and she has inspired people all over the world to take pride in being a feminist.

To understand these modern-day feminists better, it’s worth taking a look at the past. First-wave feminism during the late 19th century is primarily characterized by the women’s suffrage movement and their advocating for women’s rights to vote.

While many continue to celebrate feminist

leaders like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the women’s suffrage movement largely excluded and discriminated against women of color including suffragettes such as Ida B. Wells, Ellen Watkins Harper and Sojourner Truth.

Second-wave feminism, from roughly the 1960s to the 1990s, encompassed far more issues such as pay equality, reproductive rights, female sexuality, and domestic violence. Like the first wave of feminism, many of these goals were achieved through legislation and important court decisions.

That being said, while the second-wave movement made some attempts to address racial injustice, it remained a lesser priority than gender. The disparities between white women and white men narrowed, but the inequality between women of color and white men or even between women of color and white women largely remained the same.

Third-wave feminism emerged in the mid 1990s, challenging female heteronormativity.

The movement sought to redefine femininity and celebrate differences across race, class, and sexual orientations. While third-wave feminists support feminism, they reject many stereotypes of the feminine ideal, sometimes even rejecting the word “feminism” itself.

The newly emerging fourth-wave feminism is seeking to reclaim the term. It is characterized by action-based viral campaigns, protests, and movements like #MeToo advancing from the fringes of society into the headlines of our everyday news. In fact, the #MeToo revolution felled hundreds of high-powered men across

a multitude of industries and led to new laws against sexual harassment in various countries that had not focused on the issue before. The fourth wave has also been characterized as queer, sex-positive, trans-inclusive, body-positive, and digitally driven. Fourth-wavers believe there is no feminism without an understanding of comprehensive justice that deconstructs systems of power and includes emphasis on racial justice, class, disability, and other issues.

Today, feminists recognize the problems of [feminism] in the past and are actively working to improve their efforts. We increasingly see calls from feminists to be intersectional, and the voices of women of color and queer women are being increasingly promoted. In the women’s marches of 2017 and 2018, women’s rights were naturally at the forefront of people’s minds.

But moreover, the marches wove in themes of civil rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and more. In 2017, women organized the largest single day of protest in the world—over three million people participated in 680 marches across the U.S. alone after former President Trump’s inauguration to protest racism, sexism and homophobia. In January 2017, the Seattle Women’s March was led by Native American women. The movement is rightfully becoming much more inclusive and intersectional, aiming to help all women and men by calling for an end to toxic masculinity.

As each wave of feminism encompasses more ground, there’s still room for new ideas to take hold. For starters, we need to diversify our perspective. Our sisters of color are facing unique problems that other women are not.

Native American women have very little legal protection compared to other women in the United States. It is scary to be a Muslim woman in the West due to Islamophobia. Such hate crimes are most commonly perpetrated against Muslim women because many of them, unlike their male counterparts, have an obvious visual marker: the hijab. Lastly, Black and Asian women are under attack due to racially motivated hate crimes and slurs. We must value and protect every woman’s right to choose her faith and identity, and how she decides to express those parts of her.

Simply put, feminism is what you need it to be.

Whether you practice feminism by supporting female-owned businesses or rolling up your sleeves and leading a rally downtown, displaying strength in standing up for what you believe in takes us one step closer to shattering the aforementioned glass ceiling. To echo the words of Michelle Obama, “No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens.” Now is a better time than ever to champion our sisters everywhere.

ountless times a day, we take notice of others around us—from family and friends to our coworkers and bosses— simply because those are the people who we cross paths with. However, there’s another person that is even more present in your life than all of those individuals combined: you.

You are a consistent presence in your life and the sole holder of your responsibilities.

It’s time to give yourself some credit. No one else is more qualified to be the vessel for getting you to that next point than you are.

It’s crazy to think that we are always more than willing to remind others of how valued and special they are. While this is important in life, we forget to take the time out of our day to validate ourselves.

Think about this situation: you’re sitting in a circle with all of your friends and you are asked to list off five positive things about each of them. Your companions have so many outstanding qualities about them. In fact, you could go on and on talking about the things that make them so special. Now, try the same exercise but with yourself.

How do you feel? Can you easily think of five positive things? Or did you start to

think, “Now I have to brag about myself?

That’s not how this is supposed to go. I’m only supposed to lift up and acknowledge other people’s successes”? If so, it’s time for a change. You should be able to lift yourself up just as naturally as you do others. In other words: be your own cheerleader.

There’s a common misconception that having confidence means being selfabsorbed. The concept of being egocentric is directly defined as being preoccupied with one’s feelings, interests, or situation. Selfconfidence, on the other hand, is defined as being able to trust in your abilities, qualities, and judgment. Both of them share common 53

ground and are easily confused with one another, despite them being vastly different.

It is okay to feel proud of yourself and to be comfortable talking about your welldeserved successes. One of the best feelings is being able to positively say, “Yeah, I did that and I am so proud of myself for doing so.”

Your self-image changes when you take the time to step back and look at yourself in the mirror. Being able to notice the things you’re happy with is just a stepping stone to changing how you view who you are. All victories are victories, no matter how big or how small.

Just because your accomplishment is bigger or smaller than someone else’s doesn’t mean that there is any more or less value. If you are proud of yourself for getting your dream job

or simply getting out of bed in the morning, shout it from the rooftops. Nevertheless, you have to start somewhere, and that “somewhere” is found in choosing to stop ignoring the person in your reflection. That first step is looking yourself in the eyes and giving yourself grace to be who you dream of—one decision and you begin to change your entire perspective about yourself.

pon first impression, the word “art” carries with it a specific connotation. Canvases, paintings, and museum exhibits are often directly synonymous with the textbook definition of art, causing us to place the term in a box, to simply label it as one thing. However, art is much more than merely putting pen to paper. In fact, it is defined as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.” One of the most prominent ways people express themselves each day is through personal style. Clothing is a manifestation of our inner consciousness and creative ambition, so who’s to say that dressing up cannot be a form of art?

Transforming art into clothing could seem unconventional at first, but the finished product proves to be a token of individuality and innovation. Bending perspectives on what forms art shows itself to be, trendsetters across the globe are turning painted masterpieces into original pieces of clothing and accessories. Whether it be dominating designers or average teenagers, the craft of creating canvased clothing is a bold statement that challenges fashion norms.

TRANSFORMING CLOTHES TO CANVAS Throughout 2020, painted jackets took over social media. As people tapped into their inner artist, plain denim jackets were transformed into one-of-a-kind murals. While some opted for representing their college, others took the trend to new heights by recreating famous paintings on the back of their jackets. But why stop there? There are no limits when it comes to creating custom artwork. White dresses, tennis shoes, and old t-shirts also make ideal bases for transforming a simple article of clothing.

SCULPTED GOWNS With matters of artistry, there are no rules or regulations—designers such as Sylvie Facon are living proof of this. Based in France, Facon specializes in creating dresses that are three-dimensional. Inspired by the aesthetics of light academia and 19th-century Europe, her work includes corsets that resemble libraries, villages, forests, and magnificent gardens. The gowns are elegant and whimsical, breaking the boundaries of fashion design and inviting spectators to look at dresses through a different lens.

HEAVENLY BODIES One of the most breathtaking forms of artistic clothing is the use of classical paintings as design prints. Taking inspiration from the works of painters such as Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Van Gogh, designers across the world are creating angelic, celestial garments. The projection of renaissance artisanship and ancient Greek portraits onto varying fabrics and textures is revolutionizing the world of couture. Designers such as Versace, Elie Saab, and Valentino have embraced this artistic statement, creating runway pieces that mimic walking art exhibits. Yet, this handiwork is not limited to the big names in the fashion industry.

Smaller businesses and creators on websites such as Etsy have also established themselves as pioneers of the heavenly body aesthetic, producing unique and ethereal designs to contribute to the concept.

The new-age artistic vision has expanded beyond the limitations of a sketch pad. Plain articles of clothing are being viewed as blank canvases and ball gowns are being reconstructed to create elaborate illusions of grandesque settings. Across the world, designers and small creators alike are putting away the traditional view of what constitutes a masterpiece, breaking the border between art and fashion. These works of imagination challenge us all to abandon our fears of what is and is not allowed in the world of style, promoting a liberated and eccentric vogue that is forever.
