The Lee Specialties, Dual Openhole Packoff is designed to seal around a static wireline cable and is installed on top of a BOP or a shooting nipple. The Dual Openhole Packoff also allows for extra riser/lubricator sections to be safely added to the pressure control stack as required, such as when the well takes a “kick” (is introduced to unexpected pressure). It is also a means of equalizing pressure between the well and the pressure control stack for safe extraction of a tool string. Some of the Packoff’s components are split or slotted to facilitate assembly and operations. After the initial wireline run, the Seal Housing Sub assembly can be lifted by way of the cable head. The Seal Housing Sub remains around the cable while tools are laid down. An air injection line cleaner and line lubrication ports are integral to the top line guide. A hydraulic hand pump is required to operate the Packoff. © LEE SPECIALTIES, 2016

Section 4: Product Installation & Operation NOTE: Use the technical drawings found in “Appendix A: Technical Information” or the 3D model found in heading “3.1.1 Interactive 3D Model” on page 5 to view part locations and information.

4.1 Pre-Operation Assembly The Dual Openhole Packoff is designed to seal around a static wireline cable and is placed above a BOP or a shooting nipple. NOTE: When you assemble the pressure control stack at the job site, keep all parts clean and protected. Use a piece of wood or other suitable material to keep components off the ground. Install components in the following order: 1. Insert the wireline cable through the top of the Seal Housing Sub (PM690UU0060) and push the cable through the line rubbers and out through the bottom of the assembly. 2. Install the Bottom Line Guide (PM690UU0042), the line rubbers, and the Top Line Guide (PM690UUUU0047) into the union and thread it into the cylinder cap until the Top Line Guide seats over the piston. 3. Continue to thread the line through the other components of the pressure control stack as required. 4. Connect the Dual Openhole Packoff to the equipment below it.

PRODUCT INSTALLATION & OPERATION

4.2 Pressure Testing DANGER! When pressure testing the Dual Openhole Packoff, all plugs and connections must have a pressure rating that meets or exceeds 3000 PSI (20.7 MPa). Connections and plugs rated lower than 3000 PSI can result in the plugs and connections shearing and becoming projectiles, which could result in injury or death. IMPORTANT: Follow your organization’s operating requirements and the requirements of local laws, policies, and regulations when pressure testing the Dual Openhole Packoff.

4.3 Function Testing The following procedure explains how to function test the Dual Openhole Packoff. IMPORTANT: The following test procedure does not supersede your organization’s operating requirements. Nor does this test procedures supersede the requirements of local laws, policies, or regulations. Required Parts: 

Test Rod (Lee part number: PM655UU0381)

1. Thread the bottom nut over the Test Plug (PM655UU00381). 2. Plug the two inch figure 1502 side port. 3. Thread in the test rod. NOTE: Select the correct test rod size by matching it to the size of the line rubber (see the “Line Size Reference Table” heading in Appendix A: Technical Information on page A-2) for more information.) 4. Connect a hand pump to the hydraulic input that is located under the Needle Valve. 5. Open the Needle Valve. 6. Use the hand pump to function the Dual Openhole Packoff closed and open.

USER’S GUIDE

PRODUCT INSTALLATION & OPERATION

4.4 Operation. Use this procedure when the wireline is not moving. 1. Install the Dual Openhole Packoff as required in the pressure control stack. NOTE: Installation is usually above a BOP or a shooting nipple. 2. Connect a hydraulic hose between the Dual Openhole Packoff input connector (located under the Needle Valve) and a hand pump. 3. At the hand pump, turn the thumbscrew clockwise. This enables the hand pump to build pressure. 4. Stroke the pump handle to apply enough pressure to the line rubbers to form a secure seal around the wireline cable. 5. When you are ready to continue operations, turn the thumbscrew counter-clockwise to release pressure on the line rubbers.

4.5 Dual Openhole Packoff Seal Housing Transfer Use this procedure when lubricators/risers need to be added during operations. Required Tools:  

Ratcheting wrench 3/4 inch socket for Lockdown Screws

1. Ensure that the Dual Openhole Packoff (lower packoff) is engaged.

5.5 Troubleshooting PROBLEM No noticeable resistance against line rubbers when functioned with the hydraulic hand pump. Loss of hand pump hydraulic oil.

Hydraulics are operating correctly, but a seal cannot be achieved.

© LEE SPECIALTIES, 2016

POSSIBLE CAUSE(S)   

POSSIBLE SOLUTION(S)

Hand pump is malfunctioning Check the hand pump for damage Needle valve is not open and replace as necessary. Hand pump requires hydraulic Ensure that the needle valve is oil fully open. Add hydraulic oil to the hand pump reservoir.

The Energizing Elastomer (PM690UU0038) is not compressing properly causing the hydraulic oil to leak out of the system

Tighten the Top Line Guide Retainer (PM690UU0046) using the Openhole Packoff Tool (PM690UU0065), tighten the Top Line Guide Retainer into the Seal Housing Sub until the end surfaces are flush.

Wrong size of line rubber is installed Excessively worn line rubber

Replace the line rubber with the correctly sized rubber for the line in use. Replace the worn line rubber with a new line rubber.
