Welcome…

This spring is all about collaboration at the Albany as we join forces with a huge range of artists to present a season full of exciting, unexpected and sometimes off-beat, spoken word, music and theatre.

Last year there were over 100,000 visits to the Albany, keeping the building busy from first thing in the morning often to late in the night. For the New Year, there’s more than ever, whether you’re a regular attender or coming for the first time… take a look to get a flavour of what’s on offer.

A good place to start is Access All Areas, the Albany’s first Open Day in March - a day full of free events and part of the launch of the Arts Council’s free tickets scheme for under 26s, for events every week throughout the year.

On the subject of keeping it free, Saturday music continues with the regular Unplugged series, kicked off this time by Glenn Tilbrook…and the Albany will now be opening most Sundays through the spring with the launch of the Sunday Sessions, monthly music with artists of astonishing quality… all free and gratis (though the café manager will be pleased if you buy a drink).

New regulars include monthly comedy headliners with GSOH, new music with OOXXOO, and the first of a series of special events, School of Dark, with Charlie Dark’s Blacktronica crew …as well as the return of headliners such as Ska Cubana and Jazz Jamaica (book early, they sold out way in advance last time).

We are also delighted to welcome our first Associate Company for the year, Upswing, who will be developing their new show at the Albany. They will be a welcome addition to the companies already resident at the Albany, including Heart n Soul, Entelechy and Apples & Snakes who have all created new shows for the season and generally keep the building alive as a hotbed of creative energy.

All this and new theatre and dance shows – Security from spoken word supremo Zena Edwards, Boo from the awardwinning Mind the Gap, NoTime & We Three Kings from Irven Lewis Dance Theatre, Feeble Minds from Spare Tyre and the intriguing Song of Songs from Weeding Cane.

Poetry and place. In an age when we can stare at a screen and be anywhere – or not care where we are so long as our sat-nav’s working – it’s getting more and more important to know our place. Poet Jay Bernard’s halfway through a residency on a London allotment, pondering place, space and literally getting to know her onions. We’ve taken half a dozen hot new spoken word artists – the next big things by the time you read this – and sent them to poetry boot camp with top theatre director Yael Shavit. Expect music old and new, anything from ska tracks to live PAs from the latest grime MCs. Associate Company for Spring 2009 This spring the Albany is bursting with creative minds making new work under our roof. This year we will support several associate artists and companies, the first of which is Upswing, the UK’s leading aerial dance company.

Upswing will be taking over the Albany in April to develop their show, Loved Up. This collaboration between the Albany and Upswing will provide an exciting opportunity for local young people to play a vital part in creating performance work, as well a chance for Upswing to explore new ways of creating cutting edge performance.
