The highlight this autumn is undoubtedly the Afrovibes festival from South Africa, exploring the surprising and sometimes disturbing sides of this extraordinary country. Alongside partners in Europe and South Africa, we’ve brought to the UK some of the most inspirational and exciting performances you’re likely to see anywhere, exclusively at the Albany for a week.

Festivals are the order of the day, with the London Jazz Festival and the London African Music Festival alongside Afrovibes and Rooted, our own spoken word scratch festival.

Co-productions with the Birmingham REP, Contact Manchester and resident company Apples & Snakes have led to a collection of new theatre shows full of music and poetry with a special Albany flavour. We’ve also invited our two new Associate Artists, Inua Ellams and Arun Ghosh, to share their passions with us and produce a series of unique events.

Hip hop musician Ty comes to us with a Christmas special and resident company Entelechy return with their inimitable 21st Century Tea Dance. Finally, after a season of Family Sundays, we’re delighted to welcome back a Christmas version of Three Little Pigs with shows throughout December.

Via Volcano are dancers from the Kagiso township outside Johannesburg. Together with British choreographer and hip hop icon Benji Reid, they fuse the traditional township dance of Pantsula with breaking, hip hop and tap.

Pantsula is the dance of the streets and the crew’s style of dress - with baggy trousers and Converse sneakers - has become their trademark.

An explosive and emotional play directed by Peter Hayes and performed by Pam Ngwabeni exploring the consequences of being a lesbian in Khayelitsha, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town. Described as the ‘Township Tarantino’, Grootboom is one of South Africa’s most exciting and talked about theatre makers. Hot on the heels of 2009’s Foreplay and the critically acclaimed Township Stories, his new play Welcome to Rocksburg provides a gritty, unsentimental view of life in the townships today. A story about a cashin-transit heist, the criminals who carry it out, the cops who investigate it, and the community they live in.

Kwa Mashu is Durban’s oldest township born out of the forced removal of Africans from Cator Manor by the apartheid government.

Oscar lives in the fast lane. He pays for sex and drugs but there’s something missing. This adaptation of the famous children’s story is a real treat for everyone aged between 2 and 7 (sure, there is a wolf in it, but he’s not that scary – honest!) and will keep the adults on their toes!

Taking its inspiration from 70’s children’s TV programmes like Vision-On, Pipkins, Rainbow and Bod, 3 Little Pigs is a feast of comical puppetry, cheesy music and rather loud wallpaper!
