Suite Success

S is on the move. On the heels of opening its second location, at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and with locations in Dallas and Miami in the works, the private-terminal company is changing the way jet-setters travel throughout the country. “Opening our second PS location in America’s busiest airport will bring the countless travelers that fly to and through Atlanta the convenience and luxury that has become synonymous with the PS brand,” says Amina Porter, co-CEO of PS. Debuted at Los Angeles International Airport in 2017 as the Private Suite, PS allows travelers to bypass packed public airports and enjoy an upscale private terminal upon departure and arrival. PS got its start as part of security firm Gavin de Becker and Associates, which is known for protecting prominent world figures and families, including their travel logistics, and has since grown to have a membership base of its own and a variety of experience options. Guests can book private suites, the semiprivate Salon—a lounge shared with other guests—or PS Direct, which takes travelers and their checked bags straight from the plane to a private car and directly to their home or hotel (within 25 miles of a PS location). Membership starts at $1,250 for the Salon and $4,850 for all-access (plus fees when booking various experiences). Nonmember

pricing starts at $1,095 per person for the Salon, $1,095 per person for PS Direct, and $4,850 for up to four travelers in a private suite. The suites have every travel amenity a guest may need, from toiletries and electronic converters or chargers to yoga mats and kids’ entertainment. Plus, there’s a full-service top-shelf bar, a full dining menu, and to-go boxes for in-flight snacks. Unlimited spa services (postflight massage, anyone?), including manicures and haircuts, are complimentary with membership, as are perks like valet parking. A PS travel concierge will keep track of the timing, delays, and weather while escorting you through a private TSA security checkpoint and into one of the company’s white BMWs to drive you on the tarmac to your plane. PS first gained recognition during COVID-19, as the ideal solution for those looking for a social distancing– friendly travel option. It’s still the go-to for those who want to avoid long waits or packed terminals and enjoy a firstclass experience. The company plans to expand to Dallas in 2024 and Miami in 2025. PS MIA will take over the original Pan Am headquarters as the first private terminal at Miami International Airport. “As the nation’s busiest airport for international passengers, with more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other, MIA is an intuitive location for our expansion,” says Porter.

mid commercial air travel’s unpredictable turbulence, private and semiprivate aviation companies are emerging as saviors, pioneering alternative routes while democratizing service. Consider JSX. The Dallas-based firm is revolutionizing private air travel by providing an experience of luxury for a fraction of the typical cost—oftentimes, for less than $300 per journey. With a 234% expansion in fleet size and a 142% surge in operational flights from 2021 to 2023, JSX currently shuttles over 3,000 customers daily to 26 top-tier markets. Beyond the expansion of its network, the carrier is enhancing service to coveted destinations, such as Colorado, Florida, and Los Cabos, Mexico, not to mention enriching the flight experience, offering gate-to-gate streaming and video calling via SpaceX’s Starlink. Then there’s XO, a trailblazer in semiprivate aviation, which harnesses artificial intelligence and data management to offer an all-in-one private jet experience. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla.–based company has broadened its services with a New York–Aspen shuttle service, flying thrice weekly on a lush Gulfstream 400. Similarly, San Francisco–based Aero’s expansion into Dallas underscores the industry’s vitality, adding direct flights to such sought-after spots as Aspen and Los Cabos. Even pets are enjoying the high life. The VistaPet program from Malta-based VistaJet ensures that passengers’ furry companions have a first-class experience, while Vancouver, Wash.–based KinectAir’s “Dogs & Cats Fly Free” policy was born in response to a survey of 1,000 Americans that revealed that 78% of respondents

Finally, the Four Seasons Private Jet Experience represents the evolution of private aviation from mere transportation to an integral part of the travel adventure. By 2024, this transformation will reach new heights with a quartet of itineraries—including a family-friendly African Wonders tour zigzagging from Greece to South Africa—that will not only zip guests around on a custom-outfitted Airbus A321neoLR, but also feature an onboard Four Seasons executive chef, physician, interactive workshops, and hand-crafted lie-flat seats.

Frank Pollaro knows how to craft furnishings worthy of a $1 billion superyacht.

DAVID CHURCHILL

By Samantha Brooks

ithin his 60,000-square-foot headquarters in Hillside, New Jersey, Frank Pollaro has amassed what is perhaps the largest collection of rare, exotic, and heritage woods in the world. “I probably have more than 300 unique veneer logs, 300 solid wood logs representing about 130 different species of wood, including a large selection of ebony ranging from blond to jet-black, and 150 monumental solid wood slabs,” says the 56-year-old Pollaro, who started Pollaro Custom Furniture at age 21. “We not only design our own wood furniture, we have our own wood library; and I employ a team of 32, which includes everything from designers and engineers to procurement to specialized finishers for eggshell and straw marquetry.” The range of disciplines under one roof allows him to have absolute quality control. Traveling around the world, he buys about one in every 400 logs he sees, personally assuring that each meets his stringent standards. Among the rarer finds: a white oak tree certified as one of the

United States’ oldest. (George Washington reportedly picnicked nearby.) When Pollaro’s team sliced through its considerable diameter, they found a Revolutionary War musket ball. “Our clients are drawn to perfection and to the masterful craftsmanship that we focus on each piece,” says Pollaro, who gained recognition in the 1990s when the acclaimed architect Charles Gwathmey furnished an entire apartment in The Sherry-Netherland with Pollaro pieces. In the years since, he’s crafted custom furniture for the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Brad Pitt, David Geffen, and Larry Ellison, and he’s become known for outfitting some of the world’s most prestigious superyachts. “We had just completed the Feadship yacht Musashi in 2007 for Larry Ellison. When we finished, Larry suggested bringing some titanium into the mix on our next project,” Pollaro recalls. “It took eight years to fine-tune the concepts, with half of that time invested in the design alone.” The pieces had to be aesthetically pleasing and capable of withstanding the elements, as well as possible turbulence at high seas. Today, Pollaro’s yacht furniture collection consists of club chairs, dining chairs and tables, side tables, a sun bed, and barstools, all in a stunning mix of teak and titanium and custom contoured to each client’s specifications. “Owning a yacht is an extremely elevated level of wealth,” says Pollaro. “The furnishings we make for them are designed to reflect the utmost in refinement and customization.” n

BAHIA VIK

Even Harbour Island regulars now have a new reason to visit, as The Dunmore—originally a private beach club in the 1960s—emerges from a masterful makeover, thanks to its new owners. The 10-acre throwback has all the fixings you’d expect of a Bahamian getaway: those shutters, those thatched roofs, those crooked palms, that pool. But you’ll also value your time gazing on the clear turquoise water and pink sands from your perch under a candy- striped umbrella, or buzzing around town in a golf cart (there are no cars). The resort hosts a lively dinner followed by dancing and fireworks to ring in the New Year, and don’t miss the island’s celebratory Junkanoo Carnival as it fills the streets with vivacious costumes and sounds on December 26 and January 1. But those to the north have been catching on and slowly joining the global chic set since a pair of nomadic hoteliers opened Bahia Vik about 10 years ago. After dinner, expect sparklers, live music, party hopping from one open-plan suite to the next—but without the incessant intensity for which Uruguay is sometimes known. n early 2023, the Caribbean’s most expensive home hit the market. At $200 million, The Terraces boasts 17 hilltop acres, nine expansive suites, three swimming pools, a cinema, a game room, a chapel—and complete privacy, as it’s located on the Caribbean’s original private island, Mustique. With just 147 homesites (103 have been developed) across 1,408 acres, Mustique is a haven for high-profile people who want to go unnoticed. Approximately 90% of the properties are in the rental pool, managed exclusively by The Mustique Company, and there’s also the island’s own 17-room hotel, The Cotton House—but even if you can book a stay on the island, you still have to get to the island. The private airstrip only accommodates hopper flights on its own charter service, Mustique Air, ensuring that everyone who arrives has been vetted. Coming by sea? The borders are patrolled, and no one steps upon the island uninvited. Attributes like these have made Mustique popular with generations of British royals, and the island’s famous homeowners include Tommy Hilfiger and Mick Jagger. Stunningly gorgeous, effortlessly chic, Mustique has been the cool kid of the Caribbean since its founding in 1978. Today, it still epitomizes glamour by melding old-school traditions (weekly backgammon tournaments at The Cotton House often lead to house parties that last into the wee hours) with contemporary aspects like Wi-Fi available at every edge.

And, opening in late 2024, Four Seasons Resort Caye Chapel will feature 104 hotel rooms and 24 branded residences (starting at $4.5 million) on a 280-acre island in Belize, along with a 9-hole reversible golf course, marina village, observatory, and more. “St. Bart’s can be great, but it’s so public,” says Roger Pritchard, managing director of The Mustique Company. “On private islands like Mustique, you’re getting a truly unique experience because everyone there is equal. It doesn’t matter how large your house is; it’s about being in a community of like-minded people who want a balance of privacy and social situations—and, of course, discretion.”

Everyone loves Napa, but nestled in the Sonoma County wine country, near the Russian River and rolling hills, the charming city of Healdsburg is coming into its own. Fly into the Charles M. Schultz Sonoma County Airport, and you’re just 15 minutes by car from the heart of the action at the Healdsburg Plaza in historic downtown.

S TAY

Hotel Healdsburg is a modern wine country respite with Charlie Palmer’s Dry Creek Kitchen and new foodie-inspired spa treatments, from the Strawberry Rhubarb Hydrating Massage to the Manuka Honey Facial. For an old-world feel, Hôtel Les Mars is a European-style Relais & Châteaux boutique property with Chalkboard, a Bib Gourmand garden-to-table restaurant. Montage Healdsburg, a modern bungalow set among the vines, features a zero-edge pool, a Zen yoga garden, and a spa offering grape skin scrubs and other treatments. The retreat’s Scout Field Bar was recently revamped with specialty drinks inspired by such intrepid pioneers as Amelia Earhart.

HOUSE OF FLOWERS LITTLE SAINT

Shop at Forager, a modern mercantile with kitchen, garden, and vintage goods to bring home. And, when you are ready to leave the Plaza, about 10 minutes outside downtown is SIMI, a bucolic winery founded and run by women; enjoy the lovely picnic area and pizzas from the outdoor oven. To sip some of the best pinot noir, chardonnay, and rosé in a garden pod setting, head to House of Flowers, and do not miss the main building’s world-class art collection. For more art, check out Jordan Vineyard & Winery; the producer of French-inspired chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon has a redesigned château lobby and a collection of 18th-century drawings from the fabled Galerie Marie-Pierre Jaudel Antiquités in Paris that feels like a museum. For Healdsburg’s best views—and some of Sonoma’s premier single-vineyard chardonnays and cabernet sauvignons—embark on a mountain tour and tasting at Stonestreet Estate Vineyards and Winery in Pocket Peak.

TEST RUNS

Bring your sense of adventure—and your new skis—to some extreme and exclusive excursions awaiting in these four destinations.

o branding. No logos. Just expert craftsmanship and skier word of mouth. That’s how Igneous got its start as a custom ski maker more than 25 years ago, and that’s how it remains today for the Wyoming-based company also known for its equally coveted custom snowboards. Owner Mike Parris joined the ski-making scene after working as a robotics engineer at Carnegie Mellon, where he developed technology for the Mars rover expeditions. Leaving his robotics career behind, Parris joined friends out west, driven to craft the perfect big mountain freeride powder skis that could withstand an entire season of charging the epic terrain of Jackson Hole. Igneous builds ski cores by hand, combining white ash, hard maple, and fir. To enforce stiffness and torsional rigidity, different weights of premium composite stitched triaxial fiberglass or carbon are used. Bulletproof Kevlar safeguards against rocks, while rubber foil positioned strategically smooths out chatter on crud. And all Igneous skis feature sintered graphite bases—something usually found only on World Cup skis—that are fastest, hold more wax, and are entirely black. Igneous top sheets in wood or carbon add character. The Igneous team also works with local artists to make custom art skis. Just don’t ask for a pair with a logo. Skis from $1,749, snowboards

MIAMI When trading snowflakes for palm trees in Miami, the city’s infamous nightlife and influx of seasonal parties can have negative effects on the skin. Cassandra Sessa, spa director at The Setai Miami Beach, recommends following a two-step regimen to help skin recover and repair from nights out on the town, including an exfoliant followed by products that reoxygenate the skin, such as Valmont Face Exfoliant and Valmont’s DetO2x product line. The Orchidée Impériale Molecular Concentrate Eye Cream, the Orchidée Impériale Micro-Lift Concentrate, and the Orchidée Impériale Cream work in synergy to renew, repair, and hydrate dull, tired, dry skin.

Liz Plosser, editor in chief of Women’s Health and author of Own Your Morning, shares how she stays in shape while juggling family, work, and fitness. By Carolyn Meers

No one knows wellness like Liz Plosser. A Kansas City native, Princeton grad, seasoned brand strategist, and journalist with knowledge and experience on all things health, fitness, and nutrition, the New York–based Plosser has learned how to balance the macros with the chocolate chip cookies. Her motto? “Life is for living.” Here’s how she does it. MOVE: “I was a competitive athlete growing up, playing soccer, tennis, and basketball, and I’ve worked out five days a week for pretty much as long as I can remember. In my 20s, I ran marathons and half-marathons. By my 30s, I became obsessed with triathlons and even competed in a half Ironman. There were years of being a SoulCycle devotee, later, a burpee queen in The Class, and, post-third-baby, a regular on SLT reformers. For many years, my cardio-hardwired brain believed that if I didn’t run five miles, it wasn’t a ‘real’ workout. Now, I strength train with barbells, kettlebells, and dumbbells four times a week, do hot yoga once a week, and swim or run with my Bernese mountain dog, Willa, once a week. My fave fitness app is Ladder, and I also have to plug our WH+ membership at Women’s Health, which gives you access to all of our print and digital content.” NOURISH: “I start the day with a tall glass of flat, room-temperature water,

followed by coffee with a splash of whole milk, as I get ready for the gym. Breakfast is a smoothie with protein powder, cinnamon, a frozen banana, peanut butter powder, and whole milk or scrambled eggs. Plus toast or overnight oats. For lunch, I do a big salad with beans, tuna or grilled chicken, and lots of veggies, or a wrap with turkey and chicken and veggies with Greek yogurt. My husband, Matt, and I love to cook. Stir fry, homemade pasta Bolognese, a lentil soup— whatever we’re in the mood for. I do not drink alcohol. I stopped about four years ago, and it had a powerful, positive effect on my sleep, anxiety, and energy. I don’t count calories or weigh myself. I find that when I prioritize protein, aiming for at least 100 grams a day and 30 to 50 grams per meal, everything else falls into place. In terms of supplements, I take a scoop of Promix creatine daily, and I sip on amino acids (which is protein in its purest form) from Kion with ice water during my workouts.” REST: “I am pretty obsessive about sleep. I need eight hours! And since I wake up at 5:17 a.m., that means I’m winding down by 8:30 p.m. The crucial keys are getting my room to a frigid 67 degrees and turning on a fan for some ambient noise. When it comes to recovery, I’ll slather on CBD muscle balm from Joggy, the only brand that has worked for me.”

The burning truth about inflammation. By Ning Chao

w

ANANDA

hen it comes to wellness, inflammation is a big buzzword, with “anti-inflammatories” advertised in everything from smoothies to skin creams. But not all inflammation is bad, says Dr. Vishal Patel, co-president and chief medical officer at Sensei, the ultra-luxury wellness brand cofounded by Larry Ellison and Dr. David Agus. Triggered by injury or toxins, the body fights infection and repairs tissue with inflammation—a chain of events that should subside on its own, like fever dropping after a flu. “Certain types of inflammation are a normal and beneficial part of our body’s defense and healing process,” says Patel. So why try to stop it? “Uncontrolled inflammation may become chronic, which speeds up the aging process and can lead to cellular damage,” explains Dr. Naresh Perumbuduri, senior Ayurvedic physician at Ananda in the Himalayas, where guests seek solutions for inflammatory conditions ranging from skin issues to autoimmune disorders—when the immune system malfunctions and attacks healthy cells by mistake. The human body’s largest organ, skin, is also its first line of defense against invaders. Restorative moisturizers, such as the new Perricone MD Hypoallergenic Clean Correction Barrier Repair Nourishing Moisturizer ($75, perriconemd.com), help strengthen the barrier while calming redness and irritation. “Chronic inflammation that is not attributable to an acute injury, external agent, or autoimmune disorder may be a sign that your lifestyle—namely, how you move, how you nourish, and how you rest—may not be working for you,” says Patel, whose Sensei wellness retreats in Lānai, Hawaii, and Rancho Mirage, Calif., offer rebalancing diet, exercise, and body treatments. Thermal Body Mapping and Massage, for example, uses Sensei-developed thermographic technology to show asymmetries, muscle tightness, and pain points—information that aids practitioners in customizing massage therapies. At Ananda in the Himalayas, Ayurvedic physicians analyze “dietary habits, sleep patterns, physical and mental activity patterns, sexual habits, mental status, and toxin exposure” to determine what needs adjusting, says Perumbuduri. Physical, social, and emotional stress, as well as lack of exercise, sleep

deprivation, and unhealthy eating, contribute to inflammation. In December, Ananda will host an Energy Harmony Retreat at DEBITETUR ADI the Nautilus Maldives, where Ananda’s VOLUPTA NON team will prescribe masRERNAM, QUE yoga, DOLOacupuncture, cupping, sage, herbal supplements, detox, emotional therapy, meditation, and dietary modifications. Antioxidants are naturally anti-inflammatory, making nutrition important for inflammation control. Blueberries and green tea are antioxidant superfoods, and butterfly pea flower contains some of the same anthocyanin antioxidants as blueberries. Find it in Anima Mundi’s Butterfly Pea Flower Blue Healer powder ($34, animamundiherbals.com) and mix into teas and smoothies. Lastly, while marijuana and CBD have become mainstream treatments for pain and other conditions, using them to combat inflammation may backfire. “Smoking any substance elicits inflammation by triggering an immune response in our airways,” says Patel. “While preliminary research suggests that CBD may help in alleviating pain and local inflammation, further scientific research—including controlled trials in humans—is still needed to fully understand the harms and benefits,” he adds. Less controversial? Flossing. Gum disease creates constant inflammation, so regular brushing and flossing can help lower levels.

pened last November at the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort, the BDMS Wellness Clinic is a full-service medical facility that offers physician-led programs in a tranquil space along the Chao Phraya River. The setting is central to several of the Thai capital’s famed temples, night markets, and culinary attractions—which you need not forgo on a BDMS retreat. “We provide medical treatment and leisure,” says Dr. Pichaporn Thanapongsathorn, the clinic’s assistant director. “You can still go for holiday, enjoy the food. We want you to be at ease while taking care of your medical to-do list.” The BDMS clinic is an offshoot of Bangkok Dusit Medical Services, which operates more than 50 hospitals in Thailand and Cambodia. The hotel-based facility, the company’s first such outpost, draws from the network’s vast resources. “We bring the knowledge from all our doctors and labs to our care,” Dr. Thanapongsathorn says. “Other places might offer wellness treatments, but the knowledge and network are what make us different.” Services focus on preventative care, spanning everything from one-off appointments to multiday programs that might include annual checkups, cancer screenings, genetic diagnostics,

and sexual health counseling. Should tests suggest more acute care is necessary—BDMS also operates Thailand’s most comprehensive lab network—the clinic can bring in specialists or arrange treatment in one of the company’s nearby hospitals. The BDMS clinic also provides anti-aging and aesthetic procedures and works in conjunction with the Anantara’s spa to incorporate Thai healing rituals into its wellness regimens. Regardless of the program, the clinic’s preventative concept extends beyond your stay at the resort. “It’s not just a three-day, two-night trip to feel good,” Dr. Thanapongsathorn says. “It’s an ongoing consultation with our medial staff. We treat our patients for the long term.” Relieved of the short-term pressure of a wellness retreat— and, perhaps, the stress of a doctor’s appointment—you are free to enjoy your vacation. n

They mix a dynamic location (for instance, the Nashville location is in an old warehouse district, not among downtown skyscrapers); interiors that stay true to the brand’s global eclecticism but also reflect their own cities (collections of art from local makers and relying on a team of in-house designers); restaurants and bars with signature menu items; and the aim to gather a diversity of local creatives to engage and evolve with the club and its members. “We never go into a city and think we know everything,” says Samantha Stone, Soho House’s chief membership officer, who helped bring the brand to the West Coast with the opening of Soho House West Hollywood about 14 years ago. “Before we open, we’re meeting with cultural tastemakers and relying on the locals to guide us, rather than just coming in and telling the locals what should be cool.” Despite significant growth—the company opened its first club in London in 1995 and now boasts 42 houses worldwide—Soho House has managed to maintain hubs that encourage social intimacy, networking, and familiarity. “When you think about it, there aren’t that many places that you’d go in your 20s that you’d want to still go to in your 30s or even 40s,” says Stone. “When I first started with Soho, I knew members’ kids who were teenagers and would come with their parents. Now, they’ve graduated from school and are members themselves. I consider that a huge win. Our goal is to be a part of everyone’s journey—not just a hot spot they go to for a brief time in their lives.”

Beyond the Menu For Michelin-starred chef Enrique Olvera, the dining experience is more than what lands on the plate. By Karen Palmer

I

n addition to being one of Mexico City’s most heralded chefs, known for his award-winning omakase-style restaurant Pujol, Enrique Olvera is a master of creating a restaurant space. Cases in point: His newly opened ATLA (the original is in Manhattan) is a coastal oasis in Los Angeles’s Venice neighborhood, and Damian is a dark, dramatic paean to modern Mexican cuisine in L.A.’s Arts District. The chef often has his hands in everything from the restaurants’ design to the team uniforms to the music that sets the mood.

“The mission at Casamata [the restaurant group that oversees Olvera’s projects] is to share our Mexican heritage with pride, but we also always consider the context of the destination where we are opening a restaurant,” says Santiago Perez, CEO of Casamata. Perez adds, “Venice, for instance, presented us with the opportunity to imagine ATLA in a more physically spread-out space than New York, while also allowing us to think more expansively about ingredients and service. While the dining experience at, say, Damian is meant to feel different than that at ATLA, the overarching vision for the cuisine, design, and service is always to share our Mexican heritage and cooking techniques.” For Olvera’s restaurant Manta, which is located at The Cape, the impossibly chic hotel in Cabo San Lucas run by Thompson Hotels,

Olvera collaborated with The Cape’s architect, Javier Sánchez, to enhance the stunning view, framing it entirely in black. At ATLA, the chef collaborated with the group’s designer, Alonso de Garay, on the restaurant’s pale blue hues and terracotta accents; at Damian, their cooperation yielded the dramatic slate and marble interior. Another frequent collaborator of Olvera’s is the famed Guadalajara-based ceramist José Noé Suro, who has designed plates for Manta and some of the chef ’s other restaurants as well. Most important, Perez says, is making sure each project has a sense of place. “We want to be a part of the community, and we want the experience to reflect the location while having unifying threads that link each Casamata project.” To that end, Olvera’s own playlists can be heard at Manta, ATLA, and Damian, setting the scene for diners.

Whisky Whisperer Mixologist Cameron George’s expert insights on toasting the season. By Carole Dixon

CAMERON GEORGE

A

What trends are you seeing for winter-holiday cocktails this year?

I think consumers are more comfortable making elevated cocktails at home. This has increased tenfold since the pandemic. How often do you see people who have never worked in cocktail bars experimenting with infusions and different styles of cocktails? So, I am excited to see what this winter brings. Ingredients you’re excited about?

Coffee and chocolate. Things I am forecasting and watching out for are South American flavors. The hottest cocktail this year was the espresso martini, so we will see riffs on that. One of my favorite bars, The Doctor’s Office, in Seattle, has the best Spanish Coffee in the world, and it is one of my favorite cocktails. Where have you visited recently that gave you inspiration?

The yearly gathering at Tales of the Cocktail.

DO IT YOURSELF

A cocktail recipe from Cameron George to try at home. GINGERSNAP OLD-FASHIONED

1½ oz. Ardbeg Ten Years Old ½ oz. Amaro ¼ to ½ oz. maple syrup 2 dashes Angostura bitters Method: Stirred

Build cocktail in a highball glass with ice. Garnish with an orange twist and serve with gingersnap cookies on the side.

Being around so many people I love and respect in the industry is so inspiring. Especially going to the Spirited [Awards] dinner. It is the last event and sort of like the Grammys of the bar industry. Is Tales of the Cocktail as wild as they say?

This was my sixth Tales of the Cocktail. At these gatherings of industry professionals, you can get whatever you are looking for, whether it is engaging in seminars for career progression or looking to uncork and let the good times flow. Most of my experiences have been a healthy mix.

This year, we hosted La Maison, which was a gathering of all the Moët Hennessy spirit brands in one place to celebrate our individuality. For us at Ardbeg, it was Masters of Smoke, which is a full envelopment into the five aromatic profiles of smoke: savory, herbal, coal, medicinal, and woody. When I am not working, there is a place in the French Quarter [of New Orleans] called Erin Rose that is the de facto meeting point. If you go by at 5 in the morning, you can catch a large group of famous bartenders hanging out and drinking frozen Irish coffee. What should someone never order at a cocktail bar?

One of the cool things happening in the industry right now is that we have dropped some of the pretension over the last few years. Before that, the lemon drop and the cosmo were looked down upon even though they are classic cocktails. Now, I believe that nothing is off the table. Even a Long Island iced tea is delicious when you use fresh citrus. But I might laugh if you order an Arnold Palmer or Shirley Temple. That person is getting carded, 100%. n

t

A top concierge gives a curated guide to Art Basel Miami Beach. By Samantha Brooks

he parties, the scene, the Instagram fodder—oh, and the art. Each December, Miami Beach bursts into an extravagant frenzy to host one of the most diverse art shows on the planet. Happening from December 8–10, Art Basel 2023 will take over the Miami Beach Convention Center to host an array of galleries from around the world, and unofficially take over the city for days before and after the show with a stream of events and experiences. An expert at navigating the entire occasion, The Setai’s chief concierge, Maite Foriasky, guides us through the fair, the satellite shows, and of course, what to wear. What rookie mistake do people make when they visit Miami for Art Basel? Preparation is essential. Make sure to reserve your ticket to the show in advance. The show can be overwhelming. What are the not-to-be-missed vendors?Art is a very personal choice, but some of the more popular galleries among the nearly 300 that typically participate include Gagosian, Anthony Meier, Frank Elbaz Gallery, David Kordansky Gallery, Sean Kelly, and Karsten Greve Gallery.

Outside of the main show, any favorite satellite fairs? I suggest not to miss the smaller fairs, like Red Dot, Scope, Pinta, Art Miami, and Aqua, as well as the pop-up artist shows. Another favorite is Untitled Art. This fair is uniquely located on the beach in a tent, and they do a great job of creating an inclusive and collaborative platform to showcase emerging artists and work created by historical figures. Show aside, what are the Miami hot spots right now for art? Wynwood and the Design District are still the main spots for galleries, however, they pop up everywhere in Miami, in areas like Brickell, Coral Gables, Allapattah, and Little Haiti. The Rubell Museum recently moved to a museum space in Allapattah (LEKU is the museum’s amazing Basque restaurant) and close to Superblue. In the Design District, you have several excellent galleries to explore, including Opera Gallery, de la Cruz Collection, Black Tower Gallery, David Castillo, and of course, the ICA Miami, the Institute of Contemporary Art. Shahram Balakhani went from chiropractic to real estate, becoming one of Los Angeles’s leading spec-home developers. By Danielle Torres

L

What motivated this project?

I wanted to craft a home that was different from everything else that is in the market and for it to ignite the desire for other developers to

want to develop these types of homes. Secondly, it was a tribute to my mother’s influence, a way of carrying forward her legacy. How did you find the right design team?

I would say it took about 550 to 600 people to create this home. It was a meticulous process. I aimed to assemble individuals who shared my vision and could translate it into reality. Any favorite features?

Those that seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor spaces. The cascading glass panels serve as a bridge, inviting the serene beauty of nature into the living space. The glass elements highlight the stunning views and surrounding nature all the way to the Catalina Island. What were the biggest challenges?

Over the seven-year development period, we

50 THE AGENCY

navigated complex zoning regulations to build on a hillside, and managed a diverse team. The integration of nature, which came through the form of glass features, the suspended staircase, and the massive infinity pool, posed a unique challenge, which we addressed through meticulous planning and unwavering attention to detail. Where will the trends in luxury home design go in the next year?

I anticipate a noticeable shift toward eco-conscious designs. Sustainability will be paramount, with discerning buyers seeking properties that combine opulence with environmental responsibility. This aligns with a broader trend toward more mindful and sustainable living, reflecting a deeper appreciation for both luxury and the planet.

MIKE KELLEY

os Angeles developer Shahram “Sean” Balakhani is the force behind one of the largest luxury mansions on the market: the stately 1.6-acre modern retreat at coveted 1859 Bel Air Road, with breathtaking views of the surrounding canyon, the distant ocean, and beyond. Listed for $65 million, the museum-like estate built along a canyon edge features immaculate glass, sustainably sourced wood, and stone. The 20,000-square-foot structure spans three levels and has nine bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, and Poliform cabinetry throughout. Open-plan spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows seamlessly integrate indoor-outdoor living, while an infinity pool, a wine cellar, a home theater, a spa, and a gym make it almost unnecessary to leave. Together with the award-winning architecture and interiors firm Tag Front, world-renowned interior designer César Giraldo, and art curator and consultant Jimmy Bassal of Beverly Hills Art Exchange, Balakhani has crafted not just a home but a work of art. With a property of this magnitude topping his portfolio, Balakhani might understandably be mistaken for someone who has been developing properties his whole life. In reality, the Iran-born developer started his career as a chiropractor in 1999 and practiced for more than 17 years. Still, he was very much tied to the real estate market, having grown up with a mother who was a prominent developer. He founded his own construction company in 2008 and worked in both fields part-time. It wasn’t until he embarked on the enormous and complex Bel Air Road project seven years ago that he pivoted to development full-time and hired other doctors to run his chiropractic practice. Here, Balakhani shares his behind-the-scenes insights on building the impressive property that is 1859 Bel Air Road and where he sees the luxury real estate market going in the next year.

Santa Barbara–based architect Barry Winick shares his insights on how to create a historically accurate home. By Samantha Brooks

After his tenure with the internationally renowned, New York–based firm Peter Marino Architect, Barry Winick moved in 2003 to Santa Barbara, Calif., where he now leads his boutique architecture company (winickarchitects.com), creating stunning residences throughout California and beyond. Well versed in everything from contemporary glass-and-steel structures to sprawling Mediterranean estates, Winick is an expert at creating homes for modern living. Here, he shares his knowledge about one of the most difficult styles to master. What about Spanish-style homes do people often get wrong? A Mediterranean-style home, rather than something purely Spanish, tends to be more successful. Spanish homes tend to be heavy and dark, while Mediterranean homes are more about lovely indoor-outdoor spaces on a grand scale, with Spanish-tile roofs, thick walls, palm trees, and courtyards. The most important thing is that the materials have to be authentic, especially the tiles. One home we completed [The Summit, a nearly 11,000-square-foot home on a bluff at 2779 Padaro Lane] in

Carpinteria, Calif., features all reclaimed tiles. Right away, the home has a patina and history instead of looking like a replica. What has made this an everlasting style? There’s a comfort to it. When done right, there’s a well-defined sense of proportion and lots of details. I love interiors, I love landscaping, and bringing those sensual and engaging experiences, so that when you walk through, the architecture is celebrated. Homes like these are so tactile; the plaster on the walls, the tiles your feet touch on the floor—there’s comfort in the materials. For instance, on Padaro, we mixed in a range of materials for the flooring, with wide-plank French oak in the main living areas and a mix of stone and other woods in other areas. What’s the formula for creating a successful home with historical reference? The formula is that there is no formula. Great things come from good relationships and working with talented artisans, and you need to have discovery, discourse, and input from them. Building out the right team and letting everyone have the freedom to create their best work is key.

Just like that, Katrien Van der Schueren’s Voila! studio creates stunning wall hangings from unconventional materials. By Jorge S. Arango hat’s very interesting to me is taking materials as far as you can get them to go,” says Katrien Van der Schueren, founder of Voila!, the multidisciplinary creative studio in Los Angeles. The Belgian-born artist’s ability to manipulate usually hard materials, such as concrete, liquid bronze, artisanal plaster, and wood, into forms that appear wavy and fluid has made her the go-to creative force for major installation projects, including the Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, Carolina Herrera boutiques, the offices of YouTube and Instagram, and private residences around the world. An art historian by training, Van der Schueren comes from a family of artists. “It’s mostly by doing and making that I learned my art,” she says. She is heavily inspired by brutalist art and architecture, which is having a popular resurgence. There is something about the style’s rawness that feels immediate in the bas-relief work she creates. The forms are organic—not rectilinear in the way

of brutalism—often originating in a concrete clay form. But typical of the genre, the designs are built mostly through modular components and have the sense of weight and materiality that characterized the style from the 1950s through the 1970s. “Mainly they’re abstract,” she says, “and in general, I like earthy tones.” Voila! is a three-pronged operation: art curation and framing (“a side thing that became full-blown,” she says); two- and three-dimensional sculptural work, as well as furniture fabrication and murals; and carpet, tapestry, and textile commissions executed with artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico. Recently, Van der Schueren designed an eightfoot custom sculpted mural for designer Nicole Hollis at the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay in Kauai; a cloud installation for a Ryan Saghian design for the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, Calif.; and a 20-by-15foot mural for a private residence in L.A.’s Bel Air neighborhood. voilacreativestudio.com n

PANAMA This Central American jewel is ready for its close-up. ISLAS SECAS

W

hile Costa Rica has long held the spotlight as Central America’s tourism star, its neighbor to the south and east has emerged as an incredible luxury destination with a culture and identity all its own. Home to the Panama Canal—one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World— Panama is more than a global center for trade and commerce. From coast to coast, the nation stuns with tranquil white-sand beaches, island archipelagoes, lush rainforests, and green highlands with temperate climates. The capital, Panama City, is a vibrant, cosmopolitan destination, where gleaming towers are set against a backdrop of thriving tropical rainforests. The city has the most connected international airport in Central America, welcoming flights from major US, Canadian, and European cities. (Direct flights from Los Angeles take just under seven hours, while those from New York take just over five hours.) Panama also recognizes the US dollar as legal tender, offers an excellent public transportation system, and is acknowledged as one of the safest countries in Latin America. The optimal time to visit is during the dry season, from December to April, which is ideal for exploring the capital city or hopping a quick flight to the renowned Caribbean archipelago of Bocas del Toro or the scenic islands off the Pacific Coast. Prepare to be awed by Panama City’s robust skyline. Since the country regained control of

its famous waterway in 1999, the bustling metropolis has become an international banking hub and a locus of cultural centers, glittering high-rises, and luxury hotels, from the W to the Waldorf Astoria. The most unique, culturally rich, and visually spectacular place to explore is the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood, where colorful colonial-era architecture has been immaculately restored. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Casco Viejo (also known as Casco Antiguo) enchants in its own reminiscent way. Walking the old quarter’s narrow cobblestone streets is like stepping back in time, with each corner inspired by settlers from around the world who arrived in Panama to construct the canal. French, Spanish, American, African, and Asian influences are displayed throughout the architecture, art, and cuisine. Restored buildings in the district are home to modern culinary masterpieces, elegantly lit courtyard cafés, rooftop bars, and luxury boutique hotels. Among them is the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo (from $349, sofitel-legend-panama.com), a dazzling, French-inspired waterfront hotel that perfectly blends the past and the present. With a facade that dates to 1917, the historic structure— originally a clubhouse for the Panamanian elite— was revived over recent years and preserved by the Sofitel Legend brand. Guests enjoy modern amenities, such as a waterfront infinity pool, all within the walkable heart of Casco Viejo.

Spend an evening overlooking the city lights from one of the incredible rooftop restaurants at CasaCasco, which offers something for everyone: three independently run restaurants and five floors of entertainment, culminating with the rooftop experience, where diners enjoy panoramic views of the sea and the Panama skyline. Of course, a visit to Panama City must include its most famous architectural and engineering feat, the Panama Canal. First, explore the Panama Canal Museum, where high-tech exhibitions and artifacts from pre-Hispanic times take visitors on an epic journey through the canal’s planning, construction, and present-day operation. From there, take a private boat excursion through the canal waters, the iconic Miraflores Locks, and the surrounding islands, where you can spot white-faced capuchin monkeys peering from the carefully preserved forests of the Canal Zone. After two or three days in the city, the coast will be calling, specifically the pristine shores of one of Panama’s most stunning islands.

The secluded luxury resort Islas Secas (from $2,500 per night, all-inclusive, islassecas.com) is located within the 14-island archipelago of the same name, 20 miles off Panama’s Pacific Coast. Accessible by the property’s private plane from Panama City to the resort’s airstrip, Islas Secas features seven casitas for up to 24 guests, who enjoy the rare chance to explore this tranquil corner of the region, surrounded by countless reefs, glassy bays, and tree-lined hillsides. ever heard of Canouan Island? Type in a Google search, and you’re bound to find stories referring to it as a place “where billionaires go to escape millionaires.” True, the 3.5-mile-long island isn’t easy to get to (access is only by private plane or via the island’s own charters, which have to be booked through one of the two hotels on Canouan), but if the description of a “billionaire’s oasis” conjures images of Hermès boutiques stocked with Himalayan Birkins and row after row of Michelin-starred restaurants, think again. The island’s “town” mainly consists of a series of beach shacks, where residents operate small businesses like bakeries or bars out of their homes. Shopping? It’s mostly limited to the boutiques at the island’s two luxury hotels, Soho Beach House and the Mandarin Oriental. But that’s the point. Located on the fishhook-shaped island’s southwestern shore, Soho Beach House Canouan (from $640, sohohouse.com) debuted in July 2021 with just 40 ocean-view bedrooms ranging from 377 square feet to 786 square feet. The calm, clear waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, while the spa, yoga studio, and open-air restaurant and bar areas mean you might never need to put on shoes. Cozy, laid-back, and open to nonmembers, the boutique property is the epitome of barefoot luxury. Those looking for larger spaces and more action—action being a relative term for the island—will rejoice in the Mandarin Oriental, Canouan (from $1,665, mandarinoriental.com), located just a six-minute drive from Soho Beach House, on the island’s windward northeast coast. Here, a broad beach with more energetic waters extends along the 1,200-acre property. Guests stay in 26 suites and 13 villas. here’s only one place to stop on the two-hour drive from Japan’s New Chitose Airport to the town of Niseko: Mushroom Kingdom. The roadside shop of souvenirs, supermarket items, and, of course, snacks with a predominant mushroom theme (everything from soup to soft serve) is the ultimate in kitsch—and maybe the most interesting shop you’ll find in all of Niseko. Niseko United is the official umbrella name for four ski areas: Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Village, Niseko Grand Hirafu, and Hanazono Niseko. With constant snow (the season lasts from mid-December through March and typically sees 45 feet of powder—about three times as much as Aspen, Colo.), a base elevation of about 850 feet, more than 2,100 skiable acres, and the fluffiest powder imaginable, the region is understandably alluring. Ramen shops, ski stores for essential gear, and food trucks make up most of the commerce in the villages, but new fivestar accommodations are setting the tone for a true luxury experience off the slopes. Not a skier? You might change your mind after coming to Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono (from $270, hyatt.com). Opened in January 2020 with 100 guest rooms and 60 residences (and reopened in late 2022 after a Covid closure), the property has a ski valet where you can rent everything for a day on the mountain (including jackets, pants, helmets, and goggles). Take a few steps, and you’re outside on the slopes. Not a fan of chairlifts? The enclosed gondola makes getting up to runs effortless. Crowds? They don’t exist. Fearful of catching an edge on packed snow that has turned to ice? Not in this sea of powder. A series of gondolas connects to runs that lead down to the four base villages, but at the end of the day, ski right back to the hotel for an array of comforts: a full spa, an indoor pool with onsen, 10 dining options (including a casual

lounge with live music, the divine Cantonese-focused China Kitchen, and Michelin three-star chef Hiroshi Nakamichi’s Molière Montagne), and private karaoke rooms. Accommodations are designed for families or groups so that even the smallest rooms, at 700 square feet, feature two bathrooms, sofa beds, and dining areas. Need more space? Rent one of the residences for the ultimate ski experience, where the front door to your 1,700-square-foot penthouse opens directly to the slopes. In December 2020, Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve (from $584, ritzcarlton.com), debuted its 50 rooms and suites. Expanses of glass windows frame perfect ski-mountain views, which in the summer become golf course views. And there’s more to look forward to: Aman has announced plans for a wellness retreat and 31 Aman-branded residences, and a host of other luxury brands are rumored to be following suit. —Samantha Brooks

hose who frequent the resort meccas of Los Cabos and Riviera Maya might be used to a vacation spent hopping around hotels, local bars, or exploring small towns just outside of the tourist hubs. Abandon those expectations when coming to the Costalegre. The 150-mile-long stretch of coast south of Puerto Vallarta and north of Manzanillo is like no other region in Mexico. The region’s handful of resorts offer guests everything they might want to experience, so once on-site, they don’t have to leave. From the barren highway that connects these resorts, it’s possible to spot the subtle signs that point to their entrances, but blink and you might miss one, as this is not your typical resort town with properties competing for your attention. Starting to the north, Las Alamandas (from $377, alamandas.com) was the first—and until recently the only—true hotel in the area. Built by owner Isabel Goldsmith-Patiño in 1990, the property (whose first guest was Robert De Niro) continues to charm, with 18 suites spread throughout eight brightly colored buildings, many with private pools or hot tubs and all with beach views. The main area includes a palapa beach club and restaurant, a pool, an indoor restaurant, and a living room for socializing, but CUIXMALA

Head 20 minutes south and find Las Rosadas (lasrosadas.com), which started as a California– based family’s private compound—on 387 acres with a 1.25-mile stretch of its own beach. Now, accommodations at the fully staffed resort community include five villas (from $1,500) with a potential build-out for 45 more, as well as the original six-bedroom Paloma Blanca (from $5,500) and a romantic one-bedroom beachfront palapa (from $550). Enjoy complete privacy throughout the property, which includes a sand volleyball court, a swimming pool, and outdoor dining areas where the chefs are prepared to cook whatever you like. There’s no lobby, no official concierge, but the staff is well-versed in the region and can arrange anything from island boat tours to in-room massages. Comprised of 65 villas, 40 casitas, and a 50unit condo-hotel, El Careyes Club and Residences (from $350, careyes.com), which opened in 2018, Careyes has been popular with a bohemian crowd of chic Europeans ever since its Italian founder, Gian Franco Brignone, built the community’s first villa in 1968. The coastline is stunning, but the best beaches are explored by boat, and don’t expect a row of hotels occupying sandy shores. CANADA'S OKANAGAN VALLEY WINE COUNTRY

C

ANADA’S OKANAGAN VALLEY is a mecca for wine lovers in the know. Located about 1,000 miles north of Napa Valley, the Okanagan region comprises 86% of British Columbia’s vineyard acreage. Here, where ponderosa pines tower above 9,600 planted acres, the rugged landscape and glacially fed lakes recall a mountain town, something like Lake Tahoe, Calif., or Aspen, Colo., but upon closer inspection, the twisted vines and sustainably built wineries that blend into the scenery reveal the destination’s truth. Although the Okanagan is one of the globe’s newer wine regions, with a modern viticultural history dating back to 1988, when farmers received a grant to replace Vitis labrusca with Vitis vinifera, the valley has quietly evolved and quickly earned mainstream recognition for its Chardonnay and Riesling white varietals, and for Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc in terms of red wine, across its 11 subregions. The valley’s short, intense growing season, with large diurnal swings (40 degrees Celsius during the day drops to 10 degrees Celsius at night), is responsible for its standout varietals. Because of its high northern latitude, the Okanagan sees a roughly 4:30 a.m. sunrise and a nearly 10 p.m. sunset in the peak growing season, resulting in nearly two more hours of sunlight per day than in Napa Valley. This delivers “concentrated fruit flavors, ripe tannins, and incredible purity and freshness in our wines,” says Corrie Krehbiel, head winemaker at Mission Hill Family Estate. The Okanagan’s orientation “will continue to set the wines apart on a global scale,” says Graham Nordin, general manager of Iconic Wineries of British Columbia. As many appellations around the world struggle amid rising temperatures to achieve the balance between ripeness and freshness in their wines, the Okanagan maintains an equilibrium. “I personally believe that the Okanagan Valley has really come to the forefront in terms of making excellent quality Chardonnay,” says Quails’ Gate Winery proprietor and CEO Tony Stewart, whose family has been farming the Okanagan for generations. Another distinction of Okanagan winemaking is that the entire region’s vineyard acres amount to about a fifth of Napa Valley’s roughly 45,300 planted acres, and because of the Okanagan’s rugged terrain, there aren’t many pockets of open land left to plant. Thus, the region emphasizes quality over quantity. Winemakers here tend to focus on factors that will further their wines’ recognition across the globe. Recently, this has included taking full advantage of the various microclimates and prioritizing terroir and a sense of place, from the

lake bottom and gravelly soils of Lake Country to the sandy soils over granite bedrock in Osoyoos. The Okanagan is also committed to sustainability. In the last five years, organically farmed vineyards have doubled, and today 20% of the region’s vineyards are certified organic. Nordin says the winemakers feel responsible as stewards of the land; they want the Okanagan to be viewed not only as a luxury region but also as a sustainable region. Sustainability in the valley involves organic farming and more. There’s regenerative viticulture, with wineries rethinking how they source glass and ways they can decrease their carbon footprint. At Covert Farms Family Estate in Oliver, regenerative efforts include minimal or no tillage, species diversity, and livestock integration, as well as an overarching goal to dry farm by 2025. Also in Oliver, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards was the first Canadian winery to become carbon neutral, and in Summerland, Okanagan Crush Pad was the first Canadian winery to join the International Wineries for Climate Action. Martin’s Lane Winery, in Kelowna, has been farming sustainably since 2017, the same year it debuted a 100% gravity-flow production facility. Sustainability, quality, and natural beauty have indeed placed the Okanagan on the world stage, making any trip to the valley educational, meaningful, and of course, full of superior wines. n

The late Italian architect Paolo Piva was a master of reinterpreting the classicism of Greek and Roman antiquity to modern ends. The timeless architectural elements of this style—symmetry; classical proportion; the use of colonnades, durable building materials, and rectangular windows—developed in the steamy Mediterranean, making them infinitely adaptable to other seaside locales. All appear at Hummingbird villa, as does a sense of classical grandeur. Piva adapted to Caribbean vernacular by swapping some materials. Instead of marble, for example, he used thick coral stone for Hummingbird’s walls, which add to the sense of beachy informality but also keep the home cool inside. Rectangular viewsheds cut out of the walls frame spectacular Caribbean Sea views. A colonnade bordering a private plunge pool in the home’s primary suite faces out to sea and connects his and hers bathrooms. Another colonnade greets visitors on the front porch. The rear of the villa steps down, via a grand double staircase, to an enormous veranda with outdoor pool, recalling Roman temples that descended to vast piazzas. The structure is largely made of naturally felled pine and locally quarried stone, in keeping with the chalet genre—but convention ends there. “I embraced light-hued fabrics, clean architectural lines, and organic fluid furniture shapes to ensure a rich and contemporary feel,” Pooley explains. “Sustainability was quite important to the client, and the finishes and fittings throughout reflect that.” Living, dining, and kitchen spaces (the latter enclosed in an architecturally striking bronze-framed glass box) surround a floating fireplace with views of the dramatic Alpine peak beyond the floor-toceiling glass. Plenty of recreational spaces offer indoor pastimes for the family. A sprawling warren of downstairs rooms accommodates a pool and sauna, a media room with a simulated starlit ceiling set into a cove, and more. Truckee became a thriving mining town during the mid-19th-century California Gold Rush, something the design team of this exclusive Martis Camp club home referenced through ample use of blackened steel and industrial mesh inside and out. This element becomes part of an intentionally moody palette that adds to the warmth of the home when temperatures plummet beyond the massive windows. “The geography and architecture inform what I use,” says designer Jay Jeffers. “Appropriate materials here are of the earth and the area—stone, reclaimed wood, the steel. The ceilings are over 12 feet high.” To humanize the vaulted spaces and make them feel cozier, “oftentimes we take paneling up to the ceiling or paint the ceiling dark,” he adds. In most main spaces, that means natural wood overhead. But some, such as the dining room, feature ebonized oak or saturated paint colors, such as the deep red of the media/game room downstairs, which accommodates a large sectional for movie watching plus a bar, wine cellar, billiard table, and games table. There is also ample recycled wood paneling throughout.

LOCATION: Papagayo Peninsula, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, villaavellana.com ARCHITECT: SARCO Architects, sarcoarchitects.com DESIGNER: SENS Interior Design, senscr.com In tropical locales, ultimate relaxation, together with luxury, depends on oneness with nature. Mariamalia Garcia and Raquel Fischel, principals of SENS, express this throughout Villa Avellana by relating everything to the outdoors. It starts with the color palette; neutral tones give way to the vibrant backdrop of turquoise-blue ocean and verdant jungle that surrounds the villa. There are also sand shades and touches of sunny yellows. But it goes beyond that. “There are a lot of organic shapes and materials that connect to nature,” says Garcia. Roots and stumps from naturally felled Guanacaste trees and teak are fashioned into tables and table bases, for example. Driftwood is cut, twisted, and shaped into sculptures by local artisans. “We wanted to warm up the architecture, which is more squared off,” says Fischel. “Bringing the organic forms of the outdoors inside did that.”

COURTESY OF VILLA AVELLANA

Fischel and Garcia took their cues from the play of shadows in the forests, particularly on the terraces, and from natural phenomena; rugs, for instance, may resemble waves breaking on the beach or pools of sunlight on sand. Furthermore, everything throughout this 33,000-square-foot, 10-bedroom home—which is also available for rent—is about opening to the outdoors. Each bedroom features walls of floor-to-ceiling glass, which open to let in beach breezes. A separate yoga and spa pavilion is free from walls to let in sounds of the ocean and wildlife. And, while there are plenty of indoor spaces, it’s the expansive outdoor areas, like the kitchen with its own pizza oven, dining area, full bar area, outdoor covered lounge, and numerous balconies, where the owners and guests end up spending most of their time.

Matt Berman, a founding principal of Workshop/APD, transformed this old miner’s cabin into a family home, adding an ipe wood–swathed, two-story structure that brought it to 2,340 square feet. The original house became, he says, “a big, breathable space where they could entertain,” with the entry, living room, dining room, and kitchen. A cube structure connecting buildings incorporates a mudroom—practical for dropping off skis “and kicking off boots on the indestructible bench,” Berman says. He also notes the flamed basalt floor, textured to prevent slipping. Below, in the addition, a sauna takes the chill off and a media room calls for lounging with a movie. The house abounds in plaids, Navajo-style patterns, and furry furniture (including a Haas Brothers “Beast” chair in the entry) but forgoes the traditional cabin aesthetic by skewing neutral—mostly gray. “We wanted to own the Rocky Mountain nature but make it modern,” Berman says. The scheme offers the perfect backdrop for the blacks and whites of winter or the leafy green, aspen-dotted landscape of warmer seasons. n

Long before the champagne-soaked bubble of Formula 1 was on the radar of every man, woman, and child in America, diehards would cluster in sports bars to watch faraway races in the wee hours because there were no mainstream broadcasts of the motorsport. Many describe the pre-boom days of F1 with misty-eyed nostalgia. “This tribe believed they discovered a magical chalice of excellence called Grand Prix Racing,” says motor racing reporter Marshall Pruett. “Back before things were popular and convenient, there was an ongoing culture of passionate fans who loved and supported it, and hated the fact that it was treated like second- or third-tier entertainment at best.” It wasn’t for lack of trying; virtually every attempt to establish F1 events stateside ended disastrously, from 1981’s decidedly unglamorous Caesars Palace Grand Prix, to the tarmac-melting heat of 1984’s Dallas Grand Prix, to 2005’s Grand Prix at Indianapolis, in which chronic tire failures led reporter Alan Henry to describe the race as “the most catastrophic public relations disaster in the 56-year history of the official world championship.”

The sport continued to flourish internationally, attracting a TV audience of over 490 million unique viewers in 2018. However, the code had yet to be cracked in the States. Like soccer or cricket, the top tier of motorsports managed to elude U.S. audiences. A considerable relatability gap didn’t help either. “The fact that Formula 1 had no fan base here in America for so long is kind of shocking, but there’s really two reasons why that happened,” says A.J. Baime, journalist and author of the book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans. “First, there were no American teams and no American drivers. Secondly, like any form of motorsport, it’s full of rules and regulations that make it a little bit difficult for a first-time viewer to really understand what’s going on and dig the experience.” It wasn’t until 2019 that an unlikely savior came through in the form of Drive to Survive, a drama-filled Netflix documentary series that enraptured millions of Americans with its high-stakes, behind-the-scenes

WATCH THIS portrayals of Formula 1. The premise leapfrogged the labyrinthine rules and regulations of the sport, instead focusing on friction between drivers and team owners, and the maddening pursuit of optimizing the performance of F1’s temperamental race cars. While Drive to Survive is widely lauded as the single reason American audiences warmed to F1, Pruett suggests the seeds were planted earlier. “There’s another factor I think does not get enough recognition, and that was Liberty Media’s willful and intentional reversal of an old dumb policy by Bernie Ecclestone, who formally controlled F1 [before Liberty’s purchase]. Bernie, probably because of his generation, saw no value in social media; by embracing social media and firing tons of content through, they found a willing and waiting world. Then Drive to Survive created this perfect storm of interest, and all of a sudden folks were feeling like they discovered the next great band at the local club that nobody else had found.” “Boom,” adds Baime. “Once people realized how absolutely amazingly cool it was and how much history there was and how amazingly handsome all the drivers are, that’s what happened.” That said, the opportunities for Americans to watch Formula 1 in person are greater than they’ve been in 40 years, with three U.S. races this season: Austin, Las Vegas, and Miami. Also fueling relatability of the sport is Haas, an American team, and U.S. driver Logan Sargeant, who races for Williams. With the momentum of a hit streaming series and a prevailing sense that Americans finally “get” Formula 1, the future of the sport in America appears to be all but secure. n
