The Aftermath HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Spooky Events Juan Rivera

Usually, on typical Halloween nights, teenagers would go out and trick or treat, or stay serving trick-or-treaters in the comfort of their own home. Most of us however, have grown out trick-or-treating and would end up bored at a friend’s house, movie theater, or working. Yet, there are very popular local activities around town for big kids to do. Like Halloween Horror Nights in Universal Studios. For a few nights, the park transforms into a labyrinth of nightmares complete with haunted houses, live shows, scare zones and monsters and psychopaths running around the park trying to scare you. But, if you think it has become to cliché or too overrated for your taste, there are other options you and your friends might consider. At Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, you will not have to suffer mutants with chainsaws trying to terrorize you. This is in fact, something you could take your younger siblings to. Since it is Disney, it is guaranteed family friendly. This event is only available for a few days in October, and the park will be specially decorated for Halloween. The event will be held in Disney’s Magic Kingdom and will have fireworks and a special parade for the whole family to enjoy. Also, in this event, you are allowed to come in a costume and are welcome to take pictures with all the classic Disney characters. Keep in mind however; that this event has a separate entry ticket fee.

Halloween Special

If you are a little sick of constant Disney visits but feel uncomfortable with Halloween Horror Nights psychotic vibe, there is another option for you. There is Sea World’s Halloween Spooktacular. At this event you are also welcomed to have a costume and it is also very family friendly. This event is also included with park admission so you don’t have to spend the extra money. It also includes trick-or-treating, live shows, and the chance to meet some of the most amazing sea creatures from around the world. You are also welcome to experience an event not very far from school itself. The event is a new local tradition among the town and has been anticipated throughout the whole year. It is Celebration’s very own, Trail Of Nightmares. Trail Of Nightmares is going to be a haunted walking trail that will benefit charities. The event is going to be $12 per person and will include props, decorations, and entertainment that will also be family friendly. It will also include activities for children. However, if you are really annoyed by family activities and are willing to pay a little more for gas, you will have to go to one of Halloween Horror Nights best competitors. This is Busch Garden’s very own Hollow-OScream. This event is located in Tampa and is very similar to HHN. The theme this year is “Zombies.” Busch Gardens also have different haunted houses located around the park along with live shows and activities. It will cost $77.98 but if you want to buy them online it will only cost you $32.99. This Halloween, don’t stay glued to MTV, and try to outgrow your trick or treating habit. Instead, go out and have fun with the local events happening around your area. It beats staying home and serving the trickor-treaters.♦

Fall Time in Celebration Maddy White

Since we live in Florida, sometimes we don’t get the luxury of having great changing seasons. Our town does its best to make the people happy. Whether it’s fake snow in the winter, or falling leaves in autumn, Celebration gives the residents and tourist the seasonal weather they want. This year there will be the all-new Fall Festival, now renamed Ocktoberfest. This year on October 12th and 13th, Celebration will transform downtown into falling leaves, live music, and a relaxing place to celebrate fall time. On October 12th come downtown to visit the German themed night with live music by Dan Witucki & Heimatland Musikanten. There will be everything from yodeling to sing-a- long songs. Come back the next day on October 13th as Celebration takes on Rocktoberfest with music from rock band Orleans, and John Cafferty. You can hop on a hayride, paint a pumpkin, or dance and sing to the live music. If none of that gets you in the fall spirit try stopping by at Celebration’s own Starbucks. Here they have numerous fall drinks that only come out once a year. Try their Pumpkin Spice Latte or their Frappaccino. No matter what you are doing this fall, you can always drop down into downtown Celebration for a nice autumnal experience.♦

Halloween Special Teenage Halloween Fun Angela Locarno

As we get older the things we used to do, as kids are either “un-cool” or just not fun anymore. Well, as Halloween is just around the corner, teenagers are wondering what to do on this spooky holiday. Of course, Trick-or-Treating is fun, but in the hot and sticky weather of Florida walking around all night going from house to house to get candy isn’t as fun as it used to be. Instead of going out to Trick-or-Treating, pick a house to hang out at for the night and crack out the candy and music for a night filled with fun and friends. Getting together with a group of people is always great time, especially when you’re all dressed up in costumes. Have a costume contest to choose who’s the scariest or the most creative and reward them with a huge candy bar. While the nights still young, play some games where everyone can participate. A couple rounds of Catchphrase or Just Dance for the Wii will have everyone on their feet. As the night starts to fade, watch a classic scary movie like “Friday the 13th” or “Halloween.” These are just some of the many fun alternatives to Trick-or-Treating. So if you decide to have people over for Halloween remember, simple things such as friends, candy, and movies make for memorable nights.♦

Comedy Rex Why don’t skeletons go out on the town? They don’t have any body to go with them.

Aftermath’s Take on Review Where the Wild Things Are Jenna Spurlock

Remember when you were younger and your room would suddenly become a forest and a sailboat would arrive that would whisk you away through night and day, and in and out of weeks, and almost over a year to Where the Wild Things Are? If not, I regret to inform you that you had no childhood. Where the Wild Things Are is an essential book for children of all ages and is even still a pleaser for teens and adults. It’s the children’s book that your parents hopefully read to you as a child and you will one day find yourself reading to your children. The book was written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak in 1963 and was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1964. It has sold over 19 million copies worldwide. It is a story of a mischievous boy in a wolf suit named Max who is sent his room without any supper due to his wild behavior. Max sails to Where the Wild Things Are and baffles the Wild Things with his “magic tricks.” He then realizes how much he misses those who love him most of all. He eventually sails back home where his supper is waiting for him, still hot. In forty-eight pages, it quickly reminds readers of the imagination and rebellion of being a child. If you’re reading the story as a child, it’s pure jealousy. You want to indulge in a wild rumpus and be crowned King (or queen) of all Wild Things. But when you pick the story off from your dusty bookshelf, you’re refreshed with the adventure, freedom, and love that made some of our childhood’s significant. Sure we feared monsters as children; “They roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws,” but these Wild Things find a special place in your heart where they continue their wild rumpus forever. The child inside of all of us who still puts on the wolf suit and creates mischief of one kind and another will never forget this book. We can set our imaginations on the wild rumpus we’ve only ever dreamed about.♦

Aftermath’s Take on Review St. Vincent’s Strange Mercy Jordan Garvey

St. Vincent is a chamber rock artist, born in Dallas, Texas. She has released two EPs (Ratsliveonnoevilstar, Paris Is Burning) and three albums (Marry Me, Actor, and her most recent effort, Strange Mercy). As a former touring member of Sufjan Stevens's backup band and The Polyphonic spree, St. Vincent has gained a great deal of experience in her career. Her first album Marry Me, was, in many regards, a conventional pop album. It featured simplistic lyrics, non-threatening vocals and borderline generic production. Her follow-up, Actor, departed from this style in many ways: her mellow voice was replaced with a snarl, her wooden guitar twangs tossed away in favor of thrashing guitar riffs, while her lyrics became much darker, hinting at the gloomier part of America. As such, I expected this experimental sound to resonate to her new effort, Strange Mercy, as it seemed like something St. Vincent was adept at constructing. As it were, I was not greeted to the sound of Strange Mercy, which I familiarized myself by listening to Actor at least ten times in the past six months. Instead, I was introduced to a new, unorthodox blend of jazz and rock and melancholic chords. The LP features many amazing songs, though a few stand out especially, including Neutered Fruit and Northern Lights. This album is layered amazingly, and is enough to satisfy the most jaded music fan. Strange Mercy is yet another album that sees St. Vincent role-playing in multiple stories, each of which grab you endlessly by her genius marketing of her incredible sound. I highly recommend Strange Mercy, it is a modern day classic album, one which you'll be sorry you slept on if you don't check it out soon.♦

Aftermath’s Take on Review Columbia Angela Locarno

Columbia, also known as the oldest and most honored restaurant in Florida, is a taste of old Spain with its various choices of Spanish food and unique décor. If you’re in the mood for a light lunch, dinner for two, or a night out with the girls Columbia should be your 1st choice in choosing where to eat on any night or occasion. Not to worry you won’t have to go too far, along with many other locations spread across the United States there’s one right in the heart of downtown Celebration. Columbia was founded in 1905 by Casimiro Hernandez a Cuban immigrant and was a success from day one. The best part of your whole meal will be the bread they bring out and the very beginning of your meal, crispy and buttery, it will have you asking for more. One of the famous and legendary dishes is the 1905 salad, which a waiter or waitress will make right in front of your table. This delicious salad includes iceberg lettuce, olives, pieces of smoked ham and Swiss chess cheese, tomatoes, grated Romano cheese and their special garlic sauce. The last time I went to the lovely Columbia restaurant I had lunch with a couple of friends and spent under 12 dollars, the service was great, and the vibe inside the restaurant was vibrant yet relaxing. The prices vary from 3 to 20 dollars and each dish will leave you full. So fellas, if you want to take your girl out on a nice date but still stay on a budget this restaurant is a perfect place. You can choose to sit inside or out but each way you will enjoy your meal and the experience you endure at Columbia restaurant.♦

Aftermath’s Take on Review

Rookie of the Year Liv Simister

On August 10th, at The Social in Orlando, Rookie of the Year took the stage. Rookie of the Year primarily consists of Ryan “Rookie,” the lead singer and mastermind behind this acoustic/indie-pop creation. For years, Rookie of the Year has been playing shows, and has even released songs that have earned much praise from listeners. On June 7th, 2010, Rookie released his second full-length album, “The Most Beautiful,” a wonderful mix of melodious tunes and free-flowing lyrics. Since his previous tour ended, Rookie has been keeping a low profile, playing scattered shows throughout the states in the last few months. As the lights dim, and the show begins, Rookie steps onto the stage, the live-band jumping into place behind him. They start off playing the most popular song from the album, “Turn the Page,” sending the crowd, mostly consisting of fifteen to twenty-year old girls, into a frenzy of noise. As Rookie of the Year is still reasonably unknown, the show was more intimate, allowing a more personable atmosphere. The interaction between the crowd and the band balanced out perfectly with the amount of music playing. As a performer, Ryan Rookie is talented and enthusiastic, showcasing his enjoyment as he plays. Rookie of the Year is currently on The Lion and The Mermaid Tour with Since Forever and Like The Stars. Be sure to keep your eye out for his next Orlando show!♦

Looking for that little something to make your uniform look different from the rest of the crowd? endless possibilities. Start off with a simple white polo. You can find these at any for an acceptable range of prices. Classrooms can get chilly so adding a colorful cardigan or a zipped sweater over your polo can give it that extra pop. You can get these sweaters basically anywhere and they always come in a wide variety colors. Find your favorite color, don’t be afraid to be bold, and finish the outfit off with some cute jeans and your favorite pair of shoes. We all have to tuck in our polo’s and wear a belt right? But there is no rule against wearing a fun or colorful belt that adds life to your uniform. Try wearing a pink belt with your white polo, or even be little more daring and wear a cheetah print belt with your black polo and jeans. These belts are cute and fashionable and can be found at stores like American Eagle, Forever 21, and J.Crew for a reasonably cheep price. You may not care about your belt, but wearing a fun belt can really transform your colorless, unexciting uniform. Jewelry is one of the most important pieces anyone can wear to completely transform your uniform. You can add anything like a statement necklace, trendy feather earrings or bangles and still be in dress code. Stores like Forever 21 sell all types of jewelry for less than five dollars. You don’t have to spend a fortune on chic, fashionable jewelry to wear over your polo’s this year. Headbands are a great way to keep your hair out of your face at school but also give you that cute preppy look to wear with your school uniform. You can wear a flowered headband to prep up your outfit, or go with a braided headband for that boho chic look. The number of styles of headband is endless but be sure to pick up one next time you are out at the mall. Whether you are wearing a bright and colorful belt, trendy feather earrings, or just going plain and simple and adding a vibrant headband these key accessories will help you put your best outfit forward this school year.♦ It’s easy to stay comfortable, stylish and in dress code all at the same time. All you have to do is find out your favorite pieces and colors and don’t forget the accessories! Styling your uniform can be fast, simple and affordable.

Tip Jar Hairstyling Tips Juliette Soto

Girls! Looking to make dull hair into a hairstyle to get people’s attention and compliments? Well there are several simple techniques you can use to make any ordinary type of hair to an extraordinary look. One way is by maybe braiding any type of hair no matter if its curly, straight, long, or short, a braid can always add a little bit of style. There are three simple types of braiding techniques you can use. The first is a regular braid and you can have it on either side of your head or if you want maybe you can put it in the back. The second is a fish-tail braid, this braid is a very unique braid by the looks of it. If you don’t know how to fish-tail you simply split all of your hair in two parts, then by small sections on the outside you bring it into the center and keep going from each side. If these instructions don’t help you can simply look it up online. The last and final braid is a French braid, again you can look it up online. Another way you can help spruce up your hair looks is if you have curly hair such as I, then maybe once in a while or for special events you can straighten your hair, but try not to do it often because that may kill your hair and maybe give you dead ends. If you don’t just want straight boring hair, add a braid in it, it doesn’t matter if it’s a random braid coming down from one side or even a braid from your bangs can make it a little less dull. Maybe if you have straight hair and tired of the same old thing, you can curl your hair with a curling iron. A trick with the curling iron is instead of using the clamp just simply take the strand of hair you want to curl and wrap it around the hot metal curling iron, and these can help Walmart to any of these types of hairstyles can help spruce up your looks.

produce nice bouncy curls. Again if you just don’t want boring old curls you can make twisties from each part of your hair and twist all the way back and clip them with bobby pins or any type of clip. Or maybe you can pull your hair all the way up or half up half down with a hair tie, and if you have bangs you can make a little poof by taking your bangs and twisting them back and then pushing it up and clipping it. Or you can even French braid your bangs back. Maybe you add a bow to make your ponytail a little girlier. One last option can be either making a part to the side of your hair meaning you have more hair on one side then he other and the side with more hair you make a French braid and stop right below your chin and then just let your natural hair come out of the pony. You can either straighten it or maybe even curl it. Or maybe instead of a French braid you can make twisties from each part of the hair and then combing them together to and make a ponytail and have your hair alone come down to the side. Even adding a nice flower that you can get from Claire’s, or Beya, or even Walmart to any of these types of hairstyles can help spruce up your looks.♦

Attend

Growing Up Too Fast Liv Simister

Halloween night is the highlight of October for people of all ages. Children seem to buzz with excitement, desperate to put on ridiculous costumes. However, as children, the costumes were innocent enough. The typical costumes were animals, pumpkins, witches, vampires, ghosts, pirates, and princesses. As the years have gone by, those children have grown up, and now choose costumes that often depict a more suggestive image. Even the options for the children of today seem to be less discrete as the ones children of the 90s and before often had. As children, many of us went trick-or-treating, walking with neighbors and parents, laughter filling the air. Now, in our teenage years, many of us attend parties or walk the neighbor’s kids around the neighborhood, much as our parents did for us. If you attend a Halloween party now or even look at some of the people walking around on Halloween, you will often see bumblebees, princesses, pirates, animals, witches, and vampires. But these costumes have a completely different twist then they once did when we were children. While the costumes for males are not much different, the costumes for females have become increasingly suggestive. “Many girls happily line up to purchase these ridiculous costumes, but what they may not realize is that just because they are wearing a costume doesn’t mean they get to keep their pride,” says Simon Peters, an Orlando teen. One of the many controversial topics in our world today is the objectification of females in life and the media. However, by lining up to buy the costumes that have become popular, are girls allowing this to happen?

15

The best way to avoid losing your pride and the controversy surrounding the costumes is to get creative. You can make your own costume, or buy some thrift-store clothes and put your own spin on them, making a one-of-a-kind costume that not only shows off your creativity, but also allows you to have a night of fun without a guy grabbing you in an inappropriate place because he thinks it is acceptable. If your plans are a bit more low-key, like spending a fun night watching scary movies with friends, make sure you get candy for the trick-ortreaters, and have fun. If your plans include a costume party, think twice before you buy your costume. Above all, have a fun and safe Halloween.♌
