Listowel Business & Community Alliance Highlight Major Issues Concerning Listowel and North Kerry

The Listowel Business & Community Alliance speaks out in relation to the ongoing need for employment opportunities for the North Kerry Town emphasizing the feeling that the government has not supported towns to revitalise through more incentives to bring growth and allow people live in towns like Listowel. We need to bring investment and employment to encourage families to work and relocate out of the congested cities. We need families to live and have employment opportunities in North Kerry. Hub employment towns along the Western Seaboard are critical to stem rural decline.

Rural Ireland needs centralised decision making, a one stop shop, to tackle the problems facing Listowel and other similar towns such as vacancy, changing patterns of shopping and lack of employment opportunities which prevent growth. “We have multiple schemes for Rural Regeneration such as Local Enterprise offices through County Councils, Leader funding, Heritage, Teagasc and OPW. There is currently no central body taking charge of policy, strategy, funding and research of our towns and crucially measuring successes and failures in this area. We want immediate action to see what is working” Traders and shops who pay rates, insurance and taxes cannot compete with online shopping, this is the biggest concern for retailers. “There is unfair competition between shop owners and online businesses who do not pay rates and Irish taxes where online businesses are overseas paying no Irish tax. Also the huge increases in insurance is crippling all Irish businesses and immediate action is needed to curb insurance costs”.

Paul O’Connor head of the Retail and Enterprise Group within the Business Alliance listed specific points affecting retailers across North Kerry; • A reduction in damages on minor, fully recovered injuries.

• The introduction of a fully funded Garda Insurance Fraud Unit • Securing a commitment from insurers on premium reductions • A review of the common duty of care leading to one that is reasonable, practical and proportionate Waste • As part of a fit-for-purpose public waste management system, segregated on street collection infrastructure • Compostable coffee cups should be exempt from a levy. Compostable cups are the only option available for impulse purchases that can be disposed of sustainably.

2020 will see work begin on two long awaited projects which will bring both challenges and opportunities to North Kerry. “Listowel Bypass will bring a greater need for supports to be put in place to enable the town to continue to market itself to keep visitors and shoppers visiting Listowel. The Great Southern Greenway from Abbeyfeale to Listowel is now under construction. We need support from government agencies to capitalise on the opportunities that this development presents.”

Rose Wall: “We want Listowel to develop as a true Irish authentic heritage town, to do this it is vital we get the support from government agencies to further our plans.”

Listowel’s Dr. Patricia Sheahan named Kerry Person of the Year

Dr. Patricia Sheahan has been named the 2020 Kerry Person of the Year by the Kerry Association in Dublin.

Listowel native, Dr. Sheahan has been recognised for her outstanding dedication and commitment to cancer patients in Kerry, and her tireless efforts in providing one of the country’s most highly regarded palliative care service units.

Dr. Sheahan has worked as a palliative medicine consultant in Kerry for the past 17 years, while also developing a fully integrated palliative care service for the people of Kerry, alongside Kerry Hospice Foundation.

She is highly regarded by her colleagues, patients and their families, as well as the wider community of Kerry and West Cork, where she also leads a community palliative care team.

Making the announcement, Kerry Association Chairperson, Keelin Kissane, noted that the 2020 winner has touched the lives of most families in the county and those families attest to her extraordinary sensitivity & compassion, going above & beyond the call of duty.

ST. VALENTINE’S DAY AT KERRY WRITERS’ MUSEUM

CREATIVE WRITING FOR KIDS… Kerry Writers’ Museum will commence its creative writing classes for young people on this Saturday February 8th. Suitable for children aged 7 to 11 years, participants will learn how to use their imagination and every day experiences to create stories and poems. They will also draw inspiration from the sites and landmarks in Listowel including the Castle and magnificent Georgian Square. The aim of this 8 week programme is to develop the creative writing skills of young people, to help them explore their love of writing and let their imaginations run free. Listowel Tidy Towns group held their first meeting of 2020 on last week with belated New Year’s greetings extended to all and sundry and what an exciting year 2019 turned out to be. However there’s a difficult year ahead as year after year there are more competitors in the National Tidy Towns Competition.

Listowel Tidy Towns group are holding their AGM on the 25th of February and are appealing for more commitment from all community groups and from you the general public for the coming year.

The Listowel Tidy Towns group would like to acknowledge all election candidates who refrained from erecting their posters within the town boundaries and wish them all well in the upcoming general election. “Your co-operation is very much appreciated and we look forward to working with you in the future”.

The Listowel Tidy Towns Committee were announced this week as the recipients of the 2020 Laochra Chiarraí award, which recognises exemplary leadership in community activity in the county.

Making the announcement, Kerry Association Chairperson, Keelin Kissane, noted that the hard work, dedication and community spirit of the Listowel Tidy Towns committee over the last 27 years has led to awards for Listowel at county, national and indeed international level and is a wonderful example of exemplary community activity.

From our lovely concert on Friday night with all our young members who danced, sang and played to entertain a huge crowd, the fantastic workshops for musicians and dancers and all the competitions who brought so much support from neighbouring branches and beyond, we say a huge thank you to everyone. This féile was really a reminder of how important it is to keep our traditions of music, song, dance and our Irish language alive and to celebrate how our branch and all comhaltas branches are doing that, long may it continue. Well done to Mikey Fealy, Kyra O Sullivan and Aideen Cronin who were part of the All Ireland winning Scór competition, a fantastic achievement.

GRANDPARENT’S DAY 2020: SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE On Wednesday 29th January 2020 gave St. Teresa’s National school in Kilflynn, an opportunity to celebrate Grandparent’s Day. Grandparents play an integral role in children’s lives, offering support and love unconditionally. It is for this reason that they deserve a day of celebration.

DEATH Sympathy of the community is extended to Mary Langan, Tarmons on the death of her sister Kathleen Dempsey in London. Mary and Joe travelled to London for the funeral service.

ST BRIGID Saturday 1 February marks the Feast Day of St Brigid and is traditionally the start of Spring. It was nice to see the colourful montage and traditional St Brigid’s Cross made of rushes on display in the Church. The late Fr Jimmy O’Connell had this montage made up, conscious of keeping the traditional devotion to her alive. Even though she is after St Patrick the second most important saint in the Irish Church calendar, nowadays, there seems to be, for whatever reason, a tendency to downplay her role. It is said that when Brigid was a little girl she met St Patrick. As an adult she founded a convent at Kildare and opened a school, the first Christian school in Ireland, where the faith and Irish culture were taught to the students. In the Middle Ages, the Irish people venerated her as Muire na Gael KILNAUGHTIN GRAVEYARD The Kilnaughtin Graveyard Committee are anxious to finalise accounts for their fundraising appeal to erect an Altar Shelter in the graveyard. The project will cost €20,000 to complete and if you have a loved one interred there or are anxious to be involved you can pay your contribution to either of the joint treasurers Kitty McElligott or Bríd Histon. FERRY RANGERS Registration for school boys / girls will take place at the Community Centre on next Saturday February 8 from 7pm to 8pm for the following age groups Under 8’s, 10’s, 12’s, and 16’s. All intending players must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for signature and fee purposes. Registration fee for each player is €10 and the committee thank you for your continuing support.

Our service aims to help people to stay in their homes in a healthy, safe and comfortable environment. Grandparents were invited to a mass in St. Mary’s Church, Kilflynn where our pupils read, played and sang beautifully. Following mass, an invitation was extended to all present in the church to visit the school for refreshments. A large gathering of parents and grandparents were entertained by the school’s fantastic musicians, each class prepared a piece to recite, sing or play for their grandparents and they enjoyed a tour of the school and its facilities. Children were very excited to show off their school and classrooms to their grandparents.

Grandparents received a gift of seeds to symbolise ‘A grandparents love that is strong and deep, filled with memories to cherish and keep’. We hope that they will spend some quality time together planting these seeds and make some new special memories. We remembered all our Grandparents who are no longer with us and these seeds can also be planted in their memory.

KERRY SENIOR HURLERS The Kerry Senior hurlers have won again in Div 2A of the Allianz Hurling League.The Kingdom defeated Offaly 2-11 to 0-14 in Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Sunday 2nd February. The Crotta Hurling Club was well represented on the Kerry team by Sean Weir (Corner back), Tomas O’Connor (wing Back), Shane Nolan (midfield) (0-01), Jordan Conway at corner forward scoring (1-01) Donal Hunt and Eamon Shanahan was also a members of the Kerry Squad.

FINUGE ARE ALL-IRELAND CHAMPIONS Congratulations to the Finuge Instrumental Music group of Kieran MacKessy, Mikey Fealy, Caoimhe Laide, Aideen Cronin and Kyra O’Sullivan who took the honours at the national Scor Na nOg Finals held in INEC at the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney. Well done the group and to everyone associated with this fantastic achievement.

RATHEA IRREMORE KILFLYNN LOCAL LIFT Are looking for 30 volunteers to support this Local Lift service. Volunteers will be asked to drive one night a month. There will be a flexible rota.

MARY’S HAIGA On Saturday last February 1, Mary Lavery Carrig introduced a very innovative, imaginative and inspiring art form when she opened her first Haiga Exhibition entitled ‘Mary’s Bird and Tree Ogham Haiga’ at St John’s Theatre, Listowel. As her neighbour Dr Declan Downey who launched the Exhibition explained to a large and appreciative audience, Haiga is a fusion of the Japanese poetry form Haiku with the ancient Irish Ogham alphabet combining 20 native Irish birds and 20 trees with verse and title in a unique ancient calligraphy. The beautiful artwork was by local artist Liz Pledge and the exhibition has previously been very well received in Dingle and at the Clifden Arts Festival. Framed prints on view at St John’s can be purchased at the Centre and the Exhibition continues until February 29 and is well worth a visit.

ST BRENDAN’S BOOK In response to local enquiries a limited number of the book ‘St Brendan’s Church of Ireland, Tarbert 1814 - 2014, 200 Years of Change’ are still available at the special price of €10. The book can be posted to anywhere in the world at current postage rates. The publication by the Tarbert Historical and Heritage Society has been well received by genealogists containing as it does a Register of Christenings in the parishes of Kilnaughtin, Murhur and Kilfergus from 1793 to 1914 for adherents of the mainly Anglican faith. This is the first time the school has reached this final and they secured a fine win. They have been a very strong side all year with much more yet to come from them. One very pleasing aspect was the fact that eight minors made their senior debuts and all acquitted themselves well and were not overawed by the occasion. SYMPATHY Sadness and shock once again ascended over the entire parish and far beyond over the last week on the learning of the passing of two wonderful parishioners who had to immigrate to England in their younger lives to seek work and a better life.

Firstly came the news of the sad passing of Kathleen Dempsey (Née O’Grady) of Eeling London and late of Lislaughtin, Ballylongford. Kitty as she was more affectionately known passed away in her sleep on Monday 27th January last are her home in Eng-

land. Having been in London all her adult life she never lost touch with what was happening in Bally, Tarbert, or North Kerry for that matter. The Weekly Edition of “The Kerryman” was a must in earlier years and she would follow all the happenings through the Notes and read up on all the News in the County.

The advent of Facebook was a big success for her and she had become friends with so many through the medium of facebook that she had all the News and what was happening here at home often before the local people here were aware of what was happening. She loved the G.A.A. and followed the Kerry Team with a passion; she was also a great promoter of the G.A.A. in London along with her husband Eamon and late sister Ann. In her leisure time she liked the game of Bingo and looked forward to meeting people when she would travel out to a bingo session.

Kathleen is deeply regretted by her loving husband Eamonn and Family and her sister Mary and brother in law Joe Langan and Family of Tarmons, Tarbert to whom we extend our deepest sympathies to at this sad time. Kathleen’s funeral will take place in England. Ar dheis dea go raibh a ainm. The second sad passing came on Tuesday last January 28th with news of the passing of Tom O’Connor Sand Quay and formerly of Main Street, Tom was in his 87th year and was a very active man right up to his passing.

Born and reared in Main Street he spend his young years in the community having received his education at the local School and then taking up his first time employment working with the farming community firstly with Patrick Wren then with the Bambury families in both Lislaughtin and Rusheen before deciding to go to England with his brothers in search of a better life. Tom settled in Workham and married and worked all his adult life before himself and his wife June returned home to retire in 1996 and since that time Tom has led a very active live with June settling into the community and they making numerous friends. A great lover of the outdoor life Tom liked to rise early in the morning and head out around the country on his Honda 50. Sadly we will no longer see the energetic man on the highways and byways of the Community to his beloved wife June son’s Jimmy, Martin, David, Kevin, Brian, and Sean daughters Sheila and Valarie and dearly doted grandaughter Louise, family relatives and wide circle of friends and neighbours we extend our deepest sympathies. Tom’s remains were removed from Lynch’s Funeral Home, on last Monday evening (February3rd) to St. Michael the Archangel Church, Requiem Mass took place on Tuesday morning at 11am followed by interment in Lislaughtin Abbey.

The final game the girls were out on their feet after putting in tremendous effort and lost to Spa/Fenit/Barrow, taking home pewter medals. A great days work by the girls and great effort put in over the past few weeks at training. Nuala Moore is hosting her iconic presentation on her Guinness World Record swim to the most dangerous waters in the world, Cape Horn.

On Monday, February 10th, 7.30pm at The Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee Nuala will be joined

by Rory Golden while they host an evening of Inspirational talks into the Worlds of Extremes, From the Depths of Titanic, the Mount Everest of Ships to the Extremes of Locations and Temperatures of the Bering Strait to Cape Horn.

She will present stunning imagery, videos and photos, the explorer Rory Golden dives to the depths of 4000m to visit the Titanic and the audience will be inspired by the journey into 0 degree Ice water from extreme adventurer Dingle’s Nuala Moore. Nuala has recently been awarded a Guinness World Record and she will take us into the most dangerous waters in the world-from the Bering Strait Relay to Cape Horn, the southerly tip of the Chilean territory.

These evening is a fundraiser for Nuala’s next adventure to Mount Everest Base Camp where she will take on a swim at 5000m, Nuala will travel in April this year where she hopes to be the first woman in the world to swim at this height and also the 2nd swimmer to complete a distance on Mount Everest. Lake Imja has great significance which she will explain on the night.

Nuala Moore, from Dingle, works full time and has been swimming at extreme temperatures and remote locations for over a decade. Balancing life and work.

Best of luck to club coach and middle distance athlete Donal Leahy in the National Masters Cross Country this Saturday. Donal has been in excellent form since Christmas and we hope that his commitment and work rate is truly awarded on Saturday. Best of luck form all in the Club.

Some great results from Club athletes during the past week. Superb performance from the Dillion family at the North Munster School Cross Country in Pallaskenry. Noelle finished in fifth in the Minor Girls and securing a place in the Munster XC on Feb.13th in ClareCastle. Brother James also was in good form, finishing tenth in the Minor boys and also qualifying for the Munster finals. On Saturday, Rachel Neylon qualified for the Kerry team completing at the International Games in Hungary in the summer. Rachel coming back from injury, showed her athletic ability in the 400m to take top honours. Sister, Emma, ran very well in the 800m finishing fifth with three more years at this age group. Well done to Noelle, James, Rachel and Emma as they are one of our most consistent athletes in the club and this is great reward for their consistently in training.

LISTOWEL RUGBY CLUB

Listowel/Abbeyfeale U14 were away to Castleisland this morning. Castleisland took the kick off to start the game which Christian Foley gathered to run from his own 22 to score under the posts and Connor Dunigan stepping up to convert it. We had four more tries after that with Christian Foley, Tj Murphy with 2 and Eoin McElligott and Connor Dunigan stepping to convert 3 of 4 tries. Castleisland came back into the game with some good passing to get to our 22 and with some good phases they got over for a try . Again in the second half we were very much the stronger team running in 6 more tries from again Christian Foley, Tj Murphy x 2 ,Callum Buckley, Oisin O Regan and for me the try of the day from Rory Cleary, castleisland were putting good phases together inside our 22 only for a poor pass which Tj Murphy collected he kicked a great ball over the castleisland backs which lead to a race between Rory and the castleisland fullback, Rory just got to the ball first at the castleisland 22 to get what was an inch perfect kick on the ball to put it under the posts were he ran on to score a fantastic try and again Connor Dunigan converting. Thanks to castleisland their always going to give teams tough games but we were that bit stronger today.

Listowel Tralee U18s lost a really tight match to Muskerry on Saturday. We played with a stiff breeze in the first half but probably played too much rugby in our own territory. We got caught for numbers on the outside and conceded a try in the corner from around halfway. We upped our intensity for the remainder of the half led by forwards, Jerome O’Rourke and the Dowling brothers, Denis and Kian. We got our due reward with a superb try. Excellent hands but our backs created space for flying machine, Caoimhin Finn, who scored in the corner. Seamus Lyne converted from the touchline to give us a deserved 7-5 lead. Further pressure brought a penalty opportunity which Seamus converted to give us a10-5 lead at half time.

We controlled the ball pretty well into the breeze early in the second half. A well worked backs move created space for Emil Beauseigneur who “zig zagged” 60 metres down the middle of the field to score a wonderful try under the posts.

Seamus converted to stretch the lead to 17-5.

Muskerry used the breeze effectively to pin us deep in our territory. We had an energy sapping job carrying the ball into the wind.

Outstanding defense from Bjorn “Destiny” Nana, Igor Kwas and Barry Foley helped stem the tide.

Our discipline slipped as we tired and we conceded needless penalties. These allowed them to gain valuable ground and they finally scored from a series forward drives to close the gap to 17-12. A brilliant kick brought Muskerry from inside their half to our goal-line. The restultant play produced a try in the corner to level the game with 5 minutes left. Muskerry converted from the touchline to edge 19-17 ahead. The last few minutes were frantic as we ran the ball from all areas. We created some promising openings but we failed the get the necessary score. This was the our 4th narrow defeat in consecutive weeks. We are competing well in the top competition in Munster but we need to improve our discipline in defense if we are to kick on to the next level. We now get a well earned rest to give the bodies a chance to recover before the Munster Development Cup starts in 3 weeks.”

BEALE GAA

A blend of youth and experience took to the field for Beale seniors in our opening round of the North Kerry League, Division 1A, in Ballybunion on Sunday.

Both teams have to be complimented for a good display of competitive football despite very difficult, blustery, wintry conditions. Strong winds played havoc on playing conditions and scoring was kept to minimum.

It was Desmonds who found the target with two opening points and we finally got off the mark after twenty minutes. Good defensive work kept our opponents

at bay and prevented some possible goal chances. We went in at the short whistle two points adrift.

The rain had abated and the wind had died down considerably on the changeover. Nevertheless playing conditions were still harsh and draining. We levelled eight minutes into the second half. The teams exchanged points and we were level again in the fourteenth minute. We were unlucky when we struck the upright and the rebound again hit the post, denying us a goal chance. Our opponents changed their game plan in the final quarter and a mistake in defence resulted in a goal. With about seven minutes on the clock, we trailed by 1-5 to 0-4. Despite our efforts, Desmonds saw it out to win by 1-6 to 0-4.

Other teams in this division are Lispole, Castlegregory, Firies, Scartaglin, Skellig Rangers, Renard, Knocknagoshel, Waterville and Finuge.

Beale minors contest Division 5 of the County League. We travel to Finuge for our first round game on Saturday, February 15th. Then we play host to Milltown/ Castlemaine at the end of February and Emmetts at the beginning of March.

Our last two games will be against St Senans and Annascaul/Lispole/Dingle.

The Beale Social is on Sat night in Kilcooly’s. Medals will be presented to our victorious 2019 minors and juniors. Guest of honour on the night will be Ógie Moran, holder of 8 All-Ireland medals. Ógie was recently inducted into the GAA Hall of Fame and we are delighted to pay tribute to him at the social. Fixtures and results; Knocknagoshel hosted Duagh in the North Kerry League on Sunday afternoon. The impressive Martin Scannell scored 1-3 for Duagh in the first 20 minutes and Duagh went on to add another two goals and a point to leave the half time score Knocknagoshel 0-2 Duagh 3-4.

A pointed free by Edmond Walsh and a goal and two points by Niall Barrett reduced the deficit early in the second half. Five points for Duagh in the second half was enough to give them victory despite a number of late scores by Knocknagoshel. Both teams have to be complimented for a good display of competitive football despite very difficult, blustery, wintry conditions. Strong winds played havoc on playing conditions and scoring was kept to minimum. It was Desmonds who found the target with two opening points and Beale finally got off the mark after twenty minutes. Good defensive work kept Beale’s opponents at bay and prevented some possible goal chances. They went in at the short whistle two points adrift. The rain had abated and the wind had died down considerably on the changeover. Nevertheless playing conditions were still harsh and draining. Beale levelled eight minutes into the second half. The teams exchanged points and were level again in the fourteenth minute. Beale were unlucky when they struck the upright and the rebound again hit the post, denying them of a goal chance. Desmonds changed their game plan in the final quarter and a mistake in Beale’s defence resulted in a goal. With about seven minutes on the clock, Beale trailed by 1-5 to 0-4. Despite our efforts, Desmonds saw it out to win by 1-6 to 0-4.

They represented their club at District Board level back in early December, then annexed the Kerry title at Glenbeigh followed by a first ever Munster Scor title on the 5th January last in Ovens County Cork, to been crowned National Scor Champions last weekend at Killarney overcoming strong opposition from Mayo, Wexford and Tyrone clubs. On this memorable occasion they became the third Kerry club to enter the role of honour list as national winners of the Ceol Uirise competition joining Ballydonoghue (1998 & 2012) and Lixnaw (2015).

It’s was double celebration for their Tutors Donagh McElligott and Neilus Mackessy as they were part of the Lixnaw Group who won in 2015. There were great scenes of jubilation from their many supporters including Finuges Scor officer Verona Mackessy, as members of the group came forward to receive their medals and cup from Uachtaran, CLG John Horan. Bonfires and a large gathering of club members greeted the All Ireland Scor champions as they returned to Finuge on Saturday night where club chairman Eamon Breen and Runai Bridget Liston also warmly congratulated the new historic club champions on their tremendous achievements in bringing glory to their local Community.
