Listowel Tidy Towns 2018 Annual Local Competitions Calling all those in Listowel interested in entering their Estate, Roadside Garden or Hanging Basket / Window Box floral display for this years competitions…

This Saturday, July 21st is the final day to hand in your details to Oonagh, at Broderick's Pharmacy William Street.

Judging of all these competitions will take place this coming week beginning Monday July 23rd and the results will be announced at our Annual Awards Night in October. So, don't delay get your details in today and the best of luck to everyone!

A huge 'Thank you' to Oonagh for facilitating the smooth intake of all these entries. Don't forget, our small band of Tidy Towns volunteers are continuing to meet at 7pm each Tuesday & Thursday at St. John's and we desperately need more help if Listowel is to keep up its good record in this years National Tidy Towns competition!

We do not know when 'The Judges' will visit so we all need to be constantly alert for litter especially! Well done to everyone doing their part to date. Some great painting going on and the floral displays are just amazing!

Local Area Advisory Councils receive NEWKD / Kerry Group Vibrancy Award Kerry Group in partnership with NEWKD are delighted to present a Community Vibrancy Recognition Programme certificate to the Local Area Advisory Councils (LAACs) in recognition of their valuable contribution to the: • Community Vibrancy of North, East and West Kerry areas.

• Leadership in Community, Environment and Rural Development.

NEWKD was established in 2008 through the amalgamation of four existing local development partnerships and the boards / committees of these bodies were amalgamated under a new Board to form Local Area Advisory Councils (LAAC). NEWKD now have 4 LAACs, one in each of our geographic areas: Tralee; Listowel / North Kerry; Sliabh Luachra / Castleisland; and Corcha Dhuibhne.

LAACs generally meet monthly and the members are local people who are involved in community, voluntary and charitable activity to benefit their own communities. Each LAAC elects 2 members to the NEWKD Board and also nominate members to evaluation committees. These volunteers are an invaluable link to the communities that they represent especially in sharing information, highlighting issues and bringing forward suggestions to the Board of NEWKD. Some of the LAACs have been very active in pursuing local issues such as road planning, community insurance, access to employment / activation schemes, etc., and members have attended meetings of Kerry County Council’s Municipal area to have issues aired and addressed. LAACs have also initiated local actions, for example supporting members of new communities by organising a local walk, including food, for them.

John Stack, Chairperson, said that “NEWKD appreciate the excellent work of the Local Area Advisory Councils, and thank all members both past and present for their commitment to their communities and to the organisation in supporting and informing our important work.”

Frank Hayes, Director of Corporate Affairs, Kerry Group, also offered his congratulations and best wishes to all involved saying “ We are delighted to recognise all those that participate in their Local Area Advisory Councils and acknowledge the important voice they give to local communities through their volunteering.”

KERRY LIBRARIES LAUNCH SUMMER STARS READING ADVENTURE Libraries across Kerry are inviting children to participate in a fantastic adventure that will keep them busy with reading throughout the school summer holidays - the Summer Stars Reading Adventure. Each year Kerry Library runs summer reading programmes for primary school children to promote literacy development during the holidays and to encourage readers and not so regular readers to engage with books. The 2018 Reading Challenge will run until 25 August.

Taking part is easy: just call into to your local library and register. Each child who registers for the free programme joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books. Each child will receive their own Summer Stars reading card to record their progress and for each book read will have a Summer Stars Reward Stamp added to their card at the library. At the end of the programme, all children who have participated will be invited to attend an awards event at their local library.

Credit Union Car Loan vs Hire Purchase Agreement Why is a credit union car loan better?

When it comes to financing the purchase of a car, many people simply look for the lowest rate on offer and believe it to be the best option. Headline rates may attract the most attention, but the devil is very much in the detail. Many ‘car finance loans’ offered by garages and some banks are actually hire purchase agreements.

The main difference between using a personal loan and a hire purchase agreement to buy a car is that with a personal loan you borrow money, pay for your car, and own it immediately. With a hire purchase agreement, you don’t own the car until you make the final repayment. This means you cannot sell the car if you run into problems making your repayments.

If the motor dealer is arranging the hire purchase agreement, the motor dealer acts as an agent for a finance company and earns commission to arrange the finance for you. In this case, the motor dealer is acting as a credit intermediary and must be authorised to act on behalf of the finance company.

When you use a hire purchase agreement to buy a car, the motor dealer sells the car to the finance company. The finance company then rents the car to you for an agreed period of time in return for a set monthly repayment over a number of years.

Watch out for the range of additional fees and charges which you may incur as part of a hire purchase agreement. This would include a documentation fee (for setting up the agreement) and completion fee (a fee charged to end the agreement and pass ownership to the car purchaser). If you run into difficulty in meeting the terms of the hire purchase agreement, you may be charged a penalty fee for missed repayments, a rescheduling fee (if you need to change the terms of the agreement) and a higher rate of interest may be charged on any repayments which you missed.

The conditions of some hire purchase agreements result in monthly payments not being evenly spread out and you may pay less in the earlier months of the agreement. This can make your monthly repayments appear more affordable. However, you may have to pay a large final payment (known as a balloon payment) at the end of the term, a payment you may not have budgeted to meet. It can be a real sting in the tail for some.

Thankfully, a car loan from your local credit union is much more straight forward. Denis Dillane, CEO of Listowel Credit Union said "You borrow the money from us, pay for the car and you own the car immediately. You agree a repayment schedule with us. If you run into difficulty, you can talk to us to see if you can come to an agreement on the repayment terms. Should you be in the happy position of being able to repay the loan early, you may do so without any penalty charges."

Having arranged finance with your local credit union in advance of going shopping for a car also puts you in a stronger position. It helps to know exactly how much you have to spend and because you are not going cap-in-hand to the dealer, you are effectively a cash buyer and you may be able to negotiate a better deal.

New round of CLÁR funding to support first Responders in Kerry - Senator Paul Coghlan Fine Gael Senator Paul Coghlan has said that a new round of the Clár Programme will make funding available for first responder organisations in Kerry. This is part of a €1.2 million allocation of funding announced this week by Michael Ring T.D., Minister for Rural and Community Development.

Speaking about the purpose of the funds Senator Coghlan said: “The latest round of the Clár Programme will support First Responders who provide an excellent service in rural areas often under very difficult circumstances.

“Kerry has been allocated €69,058.00 for first responder organisations. The groups in North Kerry to benefit include: • Banna Rescue (Community Rescue Boats Irl) • Causeway Community Cardiac First Responders • Asdee Community First Responders

Defib, security and signage €3,539 Defibs, cabinets and clothing €4,105 Defib & upgrade equipment €3,864

New Brochure Highlights Diverse Range of Activities Available in Kerry A new, comprehensive and user-friendly brochure highlighting the wide and diverse range of activities and attractions on offer to locals and visitors in the county has been published by the Tourism Unit of Kerry County Council. The 170-page brochure was launched at County Buildings by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Norma Foley.

The new guide is helpfully segmented into easily accessible categories including golf, angling, surfing, walking and hiking, cycling, art, crafts, adventure, family fun activities, food experiences, gardens and parks, water sports, equestrian, and more and includes a listing of contact details for over 300 tourism and activity businesses.

The Tourism Unit of Kerry County Council, working closely with adventure and activity providers as well as local communities, development groups and committees, designed and produced the guide ‘in house’ with the support of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme 2017. The publication of the brochure is an objective of the County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan which was published in 2016.

‘County Kerry is more dependent on tourism than any other county in Ireland and future economic development and job creation in the county is more likely to be linked to tourism and hospitality than any other economic activity,’ said the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Norma Foley.

‘One in five jobs and businesses in Kerry depend on tourism and the county earns over €420 million annually from its visitors. County Kerry is gaining a reputation as one of the best places in Europe for those in search of an adventure or activity holiday. The county’s natural attributes and man-made attractions are hugely appealing for Ireland’s visitor target markets. Kerry’s countryside and coastal areas, mountains and lakes, woodlands and national parks provide outstanding environments for a range of activities and adventure pursuits,’ said Cllr Foley.

The brochure will be widely distributed and promoted both nationally and internationally. An on-line version will also be available (see www.kerrycoco.ie) which can be updated regularly to include further business listings.

JUDGE ANNOUNCED fOR BEST DRESSED MAN AT THIS YEAR’S LISTOWEL RACING fESTIVAL Last year the Crimmin Triplets, Nicola, Laura and Alison from Dundalk were the Judges for the Best Dressed Man Competition at Listowel Races and it was a huge success. This year the Judge for The East River / Emerald Properties Best Dressed Man Competition, at The Listowel Races on Thursday 13th September is Carol O'Reilly from Cobh, Co. Cork.

Carol is one of the leading actresses in the Hit TV Series Red Rock, which is currently being shown on BBC and TV3, with the new season being aired in September. Carol plays the part of Linda McNulty, who is proving very popular with viewers. An example of this is her reasons for classifying Chocolate as a Super Food are compelling, see video in East River's facebook page.

KILFLYNN FAIRY FESTIVAL On behalf of the Fairies Wizards and Elves, the Kilflynn Enchanted Fairy Festival committee wish to thank all the supporters and volunteers most sincerely for their help in the 2018 Enchanted Fairy Festival.

DEATHS The death took place of Norman Nicholson, Doonard Upper, Tarbert and formerly of Leeds, England. Norman died in his late eighties at the Oaklands Nursing Home, Listowel on Sunday 8 July. His remains reposed at St. Mary's Funeral Home, Tarbert on Wednesday 11 July. Requiem Mass concelebrated by Fr. Pádraig Kennelly and Fr. John O'Connor took place in St. Mary's Church, Tarbert on Thursday 12 July. Interment took place in St. Mary's new cemetery after Mass. Sympathy to his wife Christine, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

The death also took place of Nora (Minnie) O'Sullivan, nee Enright of Main Street, Ballylongford. Minnie who was in her nineties died on 7 July at the Oaklands Nursing Home, Listowel. She was the wife of the late Paul O'Sullivan, Undertaker of Chapel Street, Tarbert. Sympathy is extended to her brother Teddy, sister Teresa, sister-in-law Kathleen, nephews, nieces, the O'Sullivan family, neighbours and friends. Sympathy is further extended to Lila Kissane, St.Patrick's Terrace, Tarbert and Connie Mackessy, Tarmons on the recent death of their nephew Adrian Magee in Birmingham, England.

LIMERICK TOUR On Sunday, 8th of July some thirty people participated in a bus tour of a part of Munster classified by Fáilte Ireland as being in Ireland's Ancient East even though entirely within the lovely and historic county of Limerick. The outing hosted by Tarbert Historical Society was as always expertly guided by Dr. Declan Downey. Our first stop was at the very interesting and aptly titled Old Irish Ways Museum at Meanus, which was well worth the visit alone. The Heritage Centre at lovely Lough Gur told the story of 6,000 years of habitation in this unique region. Here, Dónal O'Connor attired in medieval robes regaled us with story and verse. The village of Hospital took its name from the Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem with its 13th Century Abbey. On to Kilmallock 'at the crossroads of Munster' and one of the chief towns of the Earl of Desmond retaining much of its medieval past with its ancient walls, Blossom Gate and John's Castle.

We were also given a tour of the magnificent 13th Century Dominican Priory. For a change of scene there was a visit to the Terra Nova Gardens. Very nice and welcome meal stops at the Deebert Hotel, Kilmallock and the Longcourt Hotel, Newcastlewest rounded off a very long but interesting and enjoyable day. SUMMER FESTIVAL This weekend features the Summer Festival organised by the Development Association and the Maritime Club and there is something for everybody building on last year's success. On Saturday the programme includes; 11am - 2pm Children's Art Workshop in the Wood.

11 am - 4pm Visit to Tarbert Lighthouse. 7pm - Fancy Dress Parade.

Sunday 2pm - 6pm Pierside family fun day 3pm - Air Sea Rescue Helicopters and demonstrations. 3pm - 6pm Tarbert Island Club Regatta. Bígí linn.

LÁ BREITHE Belated birthday wishes to Mrs. Kitty Griffin, St. Patrick's Terrace who recently celebrated her 94th birthday. Kitty is a great ambassador for positive ageing and never misses the Wed night bingo session in Tarbert. She regularly walks the Island road with her 'bicycle' and looks forward to the chat. TIDY TOWNS In what has been, pardon the pun, a blooming great year for flowers, Tarbert has a great collection of window boxes, hanging baskets, planters and flower urns on display. The long dry spell has meant more watering. The Memorial Plaza looks very well and has been favourably commented on by visitors. It is a blaze of scent and colour ready for its official opening on Wednesday 15th of August. The new pier shows up well in the distance with its bollards painted white and the guardrail between the two piers has had its timbers refastened. Ivy and over-hanging branches have been trimmed back along the walk to Tarbert Island and hopefully the stone wall breaches will be rebuilt in the near future. The new floral beds at the NORA gate in Tarbert island and the farther down green area look well and lift their surroundings. Some seats, timber fencing and junction markings have been repainted. Kerry County Council having renewed and replaced footpaths is carrying out remedial works in Doonard Crescent. Litter as always continues to be a problem and house-holders should remember the old Chinese seanfhocal 'if every man and woman sweeps outside his or her own door we will all have a clean street'.

Fixtures and Results: Tarbert recorded a good victory in the county league last Saturday defeated St. Michael’s Foilemore on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-11. It was great to see Shane Enright return from injury and Shane played a vital part in this win while only playing 30 minutes of football. Tarbert’s Donal Leahy opened the scores but it was Foilemore who took control of the game going 1-4 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes. Tarbert were given a lifeline when Donal Leahy was pulled down for a penalty which was well executed by Gerard O’Sullivan. Shea McDonnell received a nasty shoulder injury just before half time and with Enright also withdrawing his services victory seemed unlikely with Tarbert down 1-9 to 1-5 at half time. Tarbert however improved their performance in the second half but were still down 1-11 to 1-10 entering the last ten minutes. With Enright returning to the fold and setting up man of the match Leahy for a goal and then scoring an excellent point himself Tarbert were now up 2-11 to 1-10 with five minutes left. Both teams exchanged points before a last minute penalty was awarded to Foilemore to leave a very exciting finish to this well contested game.

Tarbert backs held firm and Mark Buckley scored Tarbert’s final point in injury time. This result keeps Tarbert hopes of promotion still alive with Beale to come to Shannon Park in two weeks time and the final game is away to Firies. Tarbert Moyvane U-16 team were unlucky losers to a determined Lispole/Annuscaul team played in Shannon Park last Wednesday on a scoreline of 3-14 to 2-14. Next Wednesday the team take on Valentia/Skellig in Shannon Park. Tarbert Moyvane minors have their opening North Kerry league game this Thursday against Knocknagoshel/Brosna/Duagh.

Cul Camp : This years Cul Camp will be held in Shannon Park from Monday August 13 to Friday August 17.

BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS Senior Hurling: Our Senior Hurling team, short a number of players due to the involvement of Kerry under 21 players, holidays etc, took on Kilmoyley in the Semi-final of the Credit Union sponsored County Senior Hurling League Division 1 in Kilmoyley on Friday evening last. Ballyduff started the game well and an early goal from Darragh Goulding put them in to an early lead. Scores were level several times during the game but a free from Daniel Collins sent the game to extra time. Kilmoyley went ahead by four points with just a few minutes to go but Podge Boyle reduced it with a pointed free. In the last minute Ballyduff were awarded a 20 metre free and Podge billowed the net to send the game to a replay.

Senior Football: Ballyduff senior footballers suffered a heavy defeat in the playoffs for promotion from Division 5 when they were defeated by Churchill at Na Gaeil pitch on Saturday evening last. Having been forced to play two County League Semi-finals on consecutive nights was totally unfair especially when we hear so much about player welfare. Then you are faced with this situation one wonders if it is just the GAA playing “Lip Service”. To add to the confusion we had two players playing with Kerry Under 21 hurlers also on Saturday.

A shuttle bus service will operate from the National School. His beloved mum is dead, and he wishes his dad was too, until one terrible moment leaves his life stripped to nothing. No one ever told Jaxie Clackton to be careful what he wishes for.

And so Jaxie runs. There’s just one person in the world who understands him, but to reach her he’ll have to cross the vast saltlands of Western Australia. It is a place that harbours criminals and threatens to kill those who haven't reckoned with its hot, waterless vastness. This is a journey only a dreamer – or a fugitive – would attempt.

Fierce and lyrical, The Shepherd's Hut by Tim Winton is a story of survival, solitude and unlikely friendship. Most of all it is about what it takes to keep hope alive in a parched and brutal world.

HELL IN HEADfORD (1921) “Ní neart go cur le chéile.” – “There is strength in unity.” – Irish Proverb The above saying translates as “There is strength in unity.” or as “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.”. In Headford, County Kerry on March 21st 1921 the Kerry I.R.A. needed every link they had to overcome the Royal Fusiliers. The Headford Ambush was led by Dan Alman and Tom McEllistrim. Dan Allman was the head of the Flying Column and McEllistrim was the Deputy Leader. McEllistrim was well known in Kerry for shooting spies. A spy during the 20th century in Ireland was looked upon as vermin. However, in Kerry during the War of Independence they were considered far more abhorrent than even that. McEllistrim gained notoriety for disposing of spies. They seemed to be drawn to him, he was akin to the Pied Piper but his tool was the gun.

One such example of McEllistrim’s prowess occurred just prior to the ambush. The local I.R.A were already holding two British deserters and were suspicious of a travelling man named Sardy Nagle, because he had been seen in the company of Captain O'Sullivan, a British intelligence officer stationed in Killarney. Sardy was in his thirties, about average height with a heavy build and a dark drooping moustache. He was seized and questioned on March 20th but he protested that he was not a spy. Sardy was tied up with the two British deserters and left in a cowshed next morning, while preparations were made for the Headford Ambush.

Eventually the I.R.A. received information confirming that Sardy Nagle have been liasing with the British authorities. Tom McEllistrim shot him dead. His body was dumped near the roadside at Claidy Cross roughly two miles outside Kenmare, where it was found on Good Friday morning. He was blindfolded, his hands were tied behind his back, and there was a card tied around his neck with the words: 'All spies beware - I.R.A.' He had been shot five times, three bullets to the head and two to the heart.

In late March I.R.A. intelligence learned that a detachment of troops from Tralee had been active in the Kenmare area but were due to return to Tralee via rail and would be switching trains at Headford junction on the 21st of March. Kerry no. 2 Brigade was the Flying Column tasked with disposing of the Fusiliers. The column hoped to wipe out all the British troops before the second train arrived. The first train was due at Headford at 4.00pm, and the column approached the station coming up to the hour.

They were just taking up positions when they discovered that the train was in fact due to arrive at 3.50pm, ten minutes before schedule. Confusion commenced as to what positions to occupy. Allman, with Jim Coffey took cover in the lavatory, on the western side of the station, and McEllistrim established his H.Q. in the stationmaster’s house. The rest of the column was divided in two. Johnny O’Connor’s section on the northern Killarney side on an embankment looking over the station, and another section under Peter Browne on the southern Kenmare side of the station, McEllistrim’s H.Q was also on the southern side.

A detachment of the 1st London Royal Fusiliers exited the train expecting to continue their journey to Tralee on a train coming from Mallow. Civilians, mainly farmers and livestock merchants, coming from a fair in Kenmare also disembarked. A British soldier stepped off the train and walked to the lavatory and was shot dead on the spot by Allman. On hearing the shot, the other I.R.A. sections opened fire. An intense fusillade began and the commander of the British troops Lieutenant C.F. Adams was killed in the initial moments, as were most of the other British fatalities. In a chaotic scene, British troops and civilians rushed for cover. After recovering from the shock, and still under heavy fire, the British troops on the platform took cover beneath the train itself.

A problem now posed itself for both the British and the I.R.A. – beneath the train and blocked by the platform the British could not effectively see their opponents or lay down a steady base of fire, instead being reduced to intermittent and effective sniping. A Vickers machine gun was also mounted on the train itself, but the gun failed to work. O’Connor’s section, similarly, found it hard to find a clear line of fire as their opponents were now well concealed beneath the train and had the extra protection of the raised platform itself. Allman left the lavatory to reconnoitre with the section of the column on the Killarney side of the embankment and find a better position from which to fire on the train, but was shot dead by a sniper in the process. Johnny O’Connor managed to throw a mills bomb amidst the troops under the train and Jim Baily, another Volunteer in O’Connor’s section, was shot dead whilst in the act of throwing another Mills bomb. McEllistrim reported that his group in the stationmaster’s house were also throwing grenades. The fighting went on for just under an hour.

According to McEllistrim, the British troops were called upon to surrender but refused, and he accordingly had hoped to rush the remaining troops under the train. However, before he could attack the surviving soldiers, British reinforcements appeared from Mallow. The early arrival of the second train with another party of military caused all sections of the I.R.A. Flying Column to withdraw, in good order, towards the river Flesk and then onto the Paps Mountains, under heavy fire from the reinforcements. It could be argued that the I.R.A. should have made preparations for the early arrival of the train by arriving at the station sooner and not having to rush their deployments. However, once the engagement began both sides displayed considerable ingenuity – the British in terms of their creative use of a covering position, in the form of the train, together with sniping, while the I.R.A. by occupying positions on both sides of the train prevented the British from retreating from the scene.

Seven British soldiers were killed and 12 wounded – two more later died from their injuries – but there were also a number of local casualties. Dan Allman and Jimmy Bailey died at the scene while three civilian passengers, John Breen and Patrick O’ Donoghue from Killarney and Michael Cagney of Liscarroll also lost their lives.

Results: Co. Senior League Div 2 - Round 9 Austin Stacks 2-11 Listowel Emmets 1-07 Last Saturday evening our seniors took on Austin Stacks in Connolly Park, Tralee in a vital County League encounter. It was a misty wet evening and conditions were very testing for both sides but it was the visiting team that settled best as Emmets opened the scoring after just one minute on the clock with a point from Noel Kennelly. Minutes later we doubled our lead after a great run from David Keane ended with him slotting the ball over the bar.

Austin Stacks got their first score 17 minutes into the game with a free and were finding it extremely difficult to break down the Emmets defence as they only leaked one point from play in the opening half. Just before half time Sam Tarrant landed a great score from a free out near the sideline as the away side went in to the dressing room leading by one point on a scoreline of 0-05 to 0-04.

Stacks started the second half strongly with a goal straight from the throw-in from Ferdia O' Brien and this put them in the driving seat from here. The home side had the better of possession as Greg Horan and Joesph O'Connor added some nice scores to keep them in front. Emmets were finding it difficult to penetrate Stacks half-back line and when opportunities arose they failed to take them which would ultimately prove costly. The game looked dead and buried then when Joesph O'Connor burst through the visitors defence and placed the ball perfectly past Conor Beasley in the Emmets goal.

Emmets refused to throw in the towel however and got a great score from Maurice Whelan and a goal in the last minute of the game from Noel Kennelly to leave the final score at 2-11 to 1-7. To be fair Stacks deserved the win but not by the margin they accomplished as Emmets battled all the way through with some fine performances throughout the field particularly by some of the younger players. Conor Beasley looked composed in goal, as Niall Collins, Daragh Broderick, Graeme Tarrant and Ger McCarthy carried the fight to Stacks from the word go. Our chances of survival in Division 2 are not looking good now but this team will not go down without a fight as was evident in Tralee last Saturday night.

LISTOWEL ATHLETIC CLUB

Irish athletics is currently on a high with so many outstanding performances at European level at U20 and junior level so far this month from sprints, relays, middle distance and high jump. Lios Tuathail AC athletes took on the National best last weekend in the Irish Life Health National Juvenile Track and Field Championships at Tullamore Harriers stadium and showed great performances over the weekend.

Pride of place goes to Sean Keane who won a national gold medal in the U15 Boys Hammer with a winning throw and new personal best of 47m & 13cm with the 3kg Hammer. This is a great achievement for Sean who has only taken on this discipline in the past year.

Following on from Sean fine win on Saturday, Saoirse Dillion was on the track on Sunday in wet conditions in Tullamore and showed her true class and grit to win a Silver national medal in the U12 60m sprint. Saoirse had a lot of work to do after 20m but used her speed to come from behind to take the silver medal. This is one better than the bronze indoor medal last March. Well done Saoirse.

Padraic McCarthy threw a PB in the Boys U15 Shot Putt Final and Ben Sheehan got to the final in the U18 Long Jump. Rachel Nelyon had a strong race in the girls U14 800m to finish seventh in a PB taking 3 seconds off her Munster time. In Irishtown in Dublin on Saturday, Aoife Mahony ran a season best in the IMC 800m women race and Kevin Lynch ran a season best in the 400m.

BEALE GAA

Beale seniors lost out to Fossa, in round nine of the County Senior League, Division 4, on Saturday evening. There was little between the teams at the outset but our opponents raised the green flag three times and we trailed by 3-5 to 0-7 at the interval. We pulled them back on the changeover and a goal brought us to within four points. However, Fossa proved to be the fitter team and eased to a 3-11 to 1-10 victory. We are now hovering at the bottom section of the table with just six points, winning three games so far. At the end of July, we play Tarbert and we welcome St Michael’s, Foilmore, to Ballybunion for our final round game on August 12th.

Beale minors play Emmets in Division 1 of the North Kerry League in Pâirc de Staic on Thursday at 7.30. A busy schedule for the next few weeks as we play Knocknagoshel/Brosna/Duagh on July 26th. Then it’s Moyvane/Tarbert on August 9th and Desmonds on August 16th.

Despite succumbing to the challenges of a much stronger St Kieran’s, Shannon Rangers Minors are through to the quarter finals of the County Championship.

Rangers came up short against St Kieran’s in Cordal on Thursday evening last on a score line of 7-27 to 1–6. Beale players on the team were Luke O’Donovan, Diarmuid O’Mahony, Jack O’Sullivan, David Hennessy (capt), Pádraig Holly, Seán Maloney, Bernard O’Callaghan and Eric Daly, with Barry O’Neill and Conor Toomey among the substitutes. We await details of the quarter final fixtures.

Beale’s Cormac Linnane came on as a substitute for the Kerry Under-20s in the All-Ireland semi-final on Saturday evening and chipped over a point to reduce the deficit as Kerry looked set to force an equaliser for extra time. No matter how hard they tried though they couldn’t find another point and Kildare held on to take their place in the final, by the slimmest of margins, 1-14 to 1-13.

Knocknagoshel Harvest Festival: The programme of events for this year's Harvest Festival is taking shape with events running on the weekends either side of Pattern Day which is Wednesday August 15th. The ever popular Tiny Tots Races will kick off proceedings on Friday August 10th at 7p.m. in the village. Knocknagoshel GAA will host a football tournament involving local GAA teams in conjunction with this year's festival. The full programme of events will be published in the coming week.

Senans were winning the mid-field battle and the forwards were on target scoring a further four points before the break 0-03 to 0-08.

This marker sets Galway up in this years Championship and are one to watch for 2018. KERRY U20: KERRY 1.13 -v- KILDARE 1.14 On Saturday last Kerry travelled to the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick to face Kildare in the Semi Final of the U20 Championship. But yet again for a second year Kerry bowed out at the Semi Final stage. The difference between the teams was a man called Jimmy Hyland, Hyland scored eight points in the Leinster Final against Dublin helping take the Leinster title, but in the Gaelic Grounds he was to add 1.08 to his personal tally 1.06 from play. Kildare looked sharp and hungary and looked the better team for long stages and led by seven points after Hyland found the net in the 47th minute but with changes made to the Kerry team the subs made a huge difference and Kerry battled back bravely and got back to within a point as they were helped by a Michael Potts goal. Further points from Dara Moynihan, Cormac Linnane and Sean O’Leary in stoppage time got Kerry within one and they looked set to force an equaliser to force extra time, but they couldn’t find another score as Kildare held on. In the weeks approaching the game, Kerry had been dealt a double blow with the loss of defenders Michelle Costello and Liz Houlihan due to injury and this was compounded in the days prior to the game by the loss of goalkeeper Alanna Maunsell, Rachel McCarthy and panellist Bríd Horan and we wish all players a speedy recovery. Aoife Fitzgerald assumed the role of goalkeeper and Julianne O’Keeffe replaced Rachel McCarthy.

Kerry hit the ground running with a 2nd minute point from play by Aoife Behan was followed by a 5th minute free from Patrice Diggin. Clare opened their account in the 11th minute with a free from Aisling McMahon and the same player levelled matters in the 15th. A Patrice Diggin free in the 18th and a point from Norette Casey in the 19th put two between the sides. A minute later Norette Casey provided an excellent pass to Jackie Horgan who in turn fed Patrice Diggin but Patrice was fouled and she converted the resulting free. In the 25th minute a lovely bit of skill from Patrice Diggin when she flicked a low ball into her hand enabled her to add another point.

However, two Aisling McMahon frees in the 29th and 31st minutes resulted in a halftime score line of Kerry 0-6 Clare 0-4.

In the 37th minute an Aisling McMahon free left the minimum between the sides. However, in the 39th a brilliant dispossession by Patrice Diggin gave her the opportunity to raise another white flag for the Kingdom. In the 42nd minute an excellent run by Jessica Fitzelle resulted in the concession of a ‘45’ which Patrice Diggin duly converted. Two beautiful strikes in the 46th and 47th minutes by Julianne O’Keeffe pushed Kerry into a 0-10 to 0-5 lead. In the 49th minute it was the turn of Captain Jackie Horgan to cut inside the Clare defence and from the narrowest of angles, she hand passed the sliotar to the Banner net. Kerry decided to run the bench at this stage and Elaine Ryall replaced Alannah Whelan and Kate Buckley replaced Caoimhe Shanahan. In the 54th minute Aisling McMahon got Clare’s final score from a placed ball. In the 55th Jackie Horgan added to her tally when she split the posts. Kerry made further substitutions and Rachel Burke replaced Aoife Behan and Megan Weir replaced Laura Collins and indeed it was Megan Weir who had the final say when she flicked a high ball to the Clare net.

Final Score was Kerry 2-11 Clare 0-6. Next up is a home game against Limerick on Saturday, July 21st.
