hQ Listowel Co-working Space to attract jobs into the Centre of Listowel

The occasion was to commemorate and thank the hard work and dedication of the whole community in fundraising for our new extension and resurfacing of our expansive school yard. The building project would not have been possible without the committed parents we have in the school. Your support is greatly appreciated and we, as a community, have made a lasting change for the better in the parish, ensuring that Lisselton National School can continue to provide the highest quality of education to the locality long into the future. A big thank you to Jason Foley and Fr. Lawlor who officially opened the building.

€500 Win for Scoil Treasa Naofa, Kilflynn in Lee Strand Cash 4 Schools Lee Strand visited Scoil Treasa Naofa, Kilflynn to present a cheque of €500 in the Cash 4 Schools Draw.

Speaking at the presentation Ide Brosnan, Principal stated “We want to say a huge thanks to Lee Strand. We are absolutely delighted to have received this cheque for €500. The pupils were really excited to meet Mighty Mikey Milk. Staff, parents, pupils, friends of the school and the community of Kilflynn, have all worked together to ensure that as many tokens as possible were collected. A special thanks to Rose Browne, who dropped in our tokens to Lee Strand. The money will be used to replenish Aistear resources in the junior classes.”

Kerry Samaritans awareness and information event The Kerry Branch of Samaritans are holding an event in the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee on Friday July 13th at 7.30pm. This event is open to all members of the public and is free of charge. The event is a new initiative for the Kerry Branch of Samaritans.

Details were announced this week of a new co-working and mixed office space development for Listowel. HQ Listowel which will open its doors in September next, is to be set up by the team behind the hugely successful HQ Tralee, Tom O Leary and Ken Tobin.

HQ Tralee originally opened in 2016 and now has almost 40 companies ranging from remote workers to start-ups and SME’s. These companies are employing over 120 people all working from Tralee town centre. HQ Listowel will be located on the first floor of the well know Pierse Fitzgibbon Solicitors building on Market St. The space will consist of individual offices, meeting space and an open plan co-working space. The space has the potential to accommodate between 25 and 30 people made up of remote workers and small company owners and employees.

“We had been looking at suitable space in Listowel for a while and it is great to have the opportunity to take on this space which is ideally located in the town.” According to Tom O Leary. “Riobard Pierse, partners and staff have been great to deal with and we are looking forward to moving in over the coming weeks to work on the space.”

So why Listowel? “The aim was to expand the HQ model to other towns in Kerry. Tralee has been very successful, and we believe that other towns have the same potential. We believe that Listowel has huge potential as it has a strong tradition of enterprise and business and has a great community. The Listowel Business and Community Alliance have also been a huge support to this project over the past number of months and were instrumental in identifying locations for us.”

“The development of a co-working space to attract jobs into the town has been a key aim of the Alliance” according to Stephen Stack, Chairperson of Listowel Business and Community Alliance. “We have seen the success of HQ Tralee in promoting business development in the town and it is great to have Tom and Ken choose Listowel and the Pierse Fitzgibbon building for their first location outside Tralee. This space will bring up to 30 jobs into the heart of the town. The business network and supports that will be provided by HQ Listowel will make this a great location for small businesses to move to from across North Kerry.”

“Opening up in Listowel, presents the town with a great opportunity to encourage people to move back home to Listowel and remote work, but also offers a great chance for freelancers and small businesses to work together in the heart of the town, we’ll have unrivalled broadband and a really nice place to work from when we open in September” said Ken Tobin.

Riobard Pierse of Pierse Fitzgibbon welcomed the opportunity to have HQ Listowel located at their premises on Market St. “We are delighted to have HQ Listowel located here in our building on Market Street. It will be great to have businesses move in here and bring jobs into the centre of the town. It will be a boost to local businesses (shops and restaurants) and for the wider community. Ken and Tom have done great work with HQ Tralee and we have no doubt that HQ Listowel will be as successful.”

HQ Listowel will be open for business in September and is encouraging enquiries now from people interested in moving into the space. We can cater for start-ups and small businesses looking for dedicated desk space or small office space. Businesses located at HQ Listowel will not be required to sign long term leases and will have an all-inclusive rent covering rates, utilities, high speed broadband, meeting space and networking opportunities. The model is ideal for people working remotely or currently working from home or unsuitable office space. Vanessa Lacey will speak on the topic of Transgender and Vanessa Lacey and Fiona Doyle will outline the difficulties they encountered in their own lives and how they managed to overcome them.

The aim of this event is to reach out to the general public i.e. Parents, guardians, teachers, students, people in the caring profession or any person who may encounter any of the above issues in their daily lives.

To date in 2018 the Branch has received 14,700 contacts. These contacts include telephone calls, SMS message and face to face callers to the Branch at Moyderwell Tralee. This is a marginal increase on the number of contacts for the same period in 2017.

TARBERT NOTES To include items - notestarbert@hotmail.com or phone Patrick Lynch at 068 36117 DEATH The death took place of James (Jimmy) O'Sullivan of Newtown, Bantry, Co. Cork and formerly of Tarbert.

James who was in his late eighties died on Friday 29 June. He was the son of the late 'Busty' O'Sullivan who was on the staff of the Munster and Leinster Bank, Tarbert in the 1940's. He was a fine footballer who played on the winning Tarbert team of 1948. His requiem Mass took place on Monday 2 July followed by burial in the Abbey Cemetery, Bantry. Sympathy of the Community is extended to his wife Kathleen, two sons and four daughters, brother Joe and sister Norma, extended family and friends. See Window on the Past.

COMMUNITY GAMES Fógra ó Andreina; Congratulations to all the children who took part in the Community Games County Finals on w/e 23 June. Gavin and Cian O' Connor, Jamie and Aaron Moloney, Tadhg, Ella and Sean O'Connell, Lia and Abi O'Brien, Catherine Enright and Michael Coolahan who all competed on Saturday.

Gavin and Abi made it through to the semi-finals on Sunday and Michael competed in the U 12 100 metre final where he was placed 5th. Well done to everybody and thanks to Sasha Brent for coaching the children.

GLIN MEN'S SHED The Glin Men's Shed group will have a stand in the Square, Tarbert on this Friday, 6 July. They will be selling some of the products that they made in Glin over the past couple of months. Monies made from the sales will go towards the upkeep and up-grading of their shed. An example of their work are the two large timber planters organised by Micheal Lanigan in the Square. The group recently won a Highly Commended award when they entered a national crafts competition run jointly by the Irish Men's Sheds Association and Topline Hardware. They meet three nights a week in St. Paul's Heritage Centre and they are looking for applicants from adjoining parishes.

THREE IN A ROW In the week that was, Kerry defeated old rivals Cork in three Munster Football finals winning Senior, Junior and Under 20 championship finals. The closest margin was in the Junior final when they defeated Cork by two points in Tralee. John O'Connell, Tarbert, himself a fomer Kerry Junior was one of three selectors on the management team. Hopefully, Shane Enright will be match fit for the up-coming clash with Galway.

FATHER SEAN Comhghairdeas and best wishes to our neighbour Sean Jones, Moyvane who was ordained for the priesthood in the Church of the Assumption, Moyvane on Sunday 1 July. Sean is the first priest to be ordained in the diocese of Kerry since 2007 and is probably now the youngest priest in the Diocese. He received his second level education in Tarbert Comprehensive School and his parents Eileen and Jimmy would be well known in the Tarbert parish. As a priest, Sean finds himself in a very challenging and challenged profession in the world of to-day. As well as the strength of his vocation he has all the skill sets necessary, a pleasant and outgoing personality, a good rapport with young people and a sense of humour. We wish him well in all his endeavours agus

Seniors – Tarbert had a comfortable victory over Ballylongford last Saturday evening, winning on a scoreline of 2-16 to 0-11. Tarbert starting strongly and were leading 8 points to two after fifteen minutes thanks to four frees from Gavin Breen, two excellent worked points from Kevin Enright and also points from Andrew Doherty and Daniel O’Connor. Bally then had a purple patch and were unlucky not to get a least two goals but did manage to reduce to deficit to one point with five minutes to half time. Further points by Mark Buckley and Shea McDonnell helped to increase Tarbert’s lead at half time to 10 points to 7. An early goal by Andrew Doherty and another well worked movement from the full back line allowed man of the match Shea McDonnell hit the Bally net to put Tarbert in full control half way through the second half leading by 2-12 to 0-9. The return to senior football by Eamon Leahy who was introduced as a substitute to score the final point of the game.

Tarbert now travel to St. Michael’s Foilmore in the next round in what will be a vital game in our push for promotion. Coiste na nOg: Tarbert U-14 team defeated Beale last Monday evening and away to Bally/Asdee this Monday night. Tarbert/Moyvane U-16 team commence their County League campaign with a home game on Wednesday 11th July while the combination minor team travel to Listowel on the 12th July to take on the home side in the North Kerry league.

kilflynn RING OF kERRY CYCLE Crotta Leisure Cyclists will have up to 40 cyclists from the locality taking part in the Annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle of 112 miles on next Saturday July 7th .

This is the biggest charity cycle in the country with 9,500 cyclists taking part. The local cyclists have been in serious training over the past few months and have been seen on various roads all around North Kerry.

Congratulations : Well done to the Kerry junior team and to our own John O’Connell who was part of the management team on the hard fought victory over Cork last week in the Munster Junior final, the team now take on Kildare in the All-Ireland semi final and we wish them and all the Kerry teams the very best in the week’s ahead.

WINDOW ON THE PAST In 1948 Tarbert won the North Kerry Senior Football Championship when they defeated St.Patrick's, a combination of Ballyduff and Ballyconry in Ballylongford. In the semi-final played in the Horsepark (Comprehensive School site) Tarbert beat highly fancied Ballydonoghue, a team which included Kerry players such as Eddie Dowling, Gus Cremin and Mick Finucane. The final was fixed for October and collective training was directed by John Sharkey, a visiting American team coach assisted by Martin Kelly. A strict training regime was imposed. A serious loss to the team was Timmy Enright, an uncle of Shane, who had to go back to college as he was studying for the priesthood and was not allowed out to play. The team was captained by Henry O'Donnell and included the strong midfield pairing of Michael O'Sullivan and Jimmy O'Sullivan, no relations. A young John Coleman made his debut as goalkeeper on the team. With the death of Jimmy O'Sullivan there are now only three survivors of that winning team of 70 years ago. WALk TO REMEMBER This will be the third year of the Walk to Remember event in Ballybunion. Over past 2 years thousands have been raised for worthy causes, this year is in aid of The Intensive Care Unit of Kerry University Hospital. BALLYDUFF FIANNA FÁIL The first Cumann of Fianna Fáil was set up in Ballyduff on Sunday May 1st 1932 when a large crowd were present at Tady O'Hanlon's house in the village(This house in now Marie's Hairdressing Salon).

The following report appeared in the Kerry Champion newspaper on Saturday May 7th 1932. “A large gathering of Fianna Fáil supporters assembled at Ballyduff on Sunday last May 1st for the purpose of settignup a local branch of that organisation. The following Officers were appointed; Chairman – James Houlihan M.C.C, Ballyduff.

Secretary – James J. O'Neill, Derryra.

Treasurers – John O'Sullivan, Knopogue and Tom O'Brien, Assistant Creamery Manager, Ballyduff Co-Operative Creamery.

Delegates to Comhairle Ceantair, Listowel – Michael Harrington, P.C., Clahane and Tom Barrett, Rahela.

On the proposition of the Secretary, seconded by Mr. Harrington it was unanimously decided to name the cumann “John Houlihan (Ballyduff) Fianna Fáil Cumann in commemoration of the latter who was brutally gunned to death in front of his own home on the morning of November 1st 1920 by the Black and Tans.

Having fixed the dates of future meetings, the Chairman, in concluding proposed a vote of condolance to the Secretary on the recent death of his father, it was seconded by P O'Connor and passed unanimously, all members standing in silence.”

Staff, pupils and parents of Kilconly N.S. doing a clean up at Beale Strand on Thursday 21st last. They collected a lot of rubbish and did a sand art demonstration afterwards with a very clear message " IF IT'S YOUR OWN, BRING IT HOME".

They were very disappointed at the lack of bins on the beach and as such have written to every Kerry County Councillor requesting the urgency for more bins

COISTE NA NOG U8s – It was Ballyduff’s turn to host the U8s in the Go Games Football Blitz rotation and this took place on Sunday morning. The visiting teams were Tarbert, Ballydonoghue and Knocknogoshel. Conditions were perfect as the cloud cover gave the players relief from the recent heatwave, every player got a game and it was obvious to the spectators that this group is going well in training, as they worked together as a team showing the skills they have learned. Well done to the mentors for all their work so far.

U11s – Well done to the U11s who are North Kerry League Champions after beating Kilmoyley on Friday night. Both teams started well and exchanged points for the first part of the game, however a series of goals late in the first half and early in the second half allowed Ballyduff to pull away and seal their league victory. The work rate by this team is phenomenal and they should be proud of their achievement. Well done to Noel, Joe & Derek on their coaching.

U14s – The U14 hurlers were at home to Ballyheigue on Thursday evening.

For once, we all enjoyed the weather conditions in the top field. Both teams started slowly and it was obvious that the heat was sapping their energy, however Ballyduff came into it in the second half and ran out eventual winners on a scoreline of 3-09 to 2-05.

The U14 footballers met Moyvane in the North Kerry League on Monday evening in what was certain to be a tough encounter. The teams were evenly match in the first half, both teams were taking their scoring changes and at the break the Ballyduff boys were a point down. In the second half they came out fighting and two quick goals left the visitors on the back foot, this didn’t last long and the home side found themselves under pressure again.

They worked tirelessly for the remainder of the match and at the final whistle found themselves ahead 5-11 to 3-11.

The U16s hurlers played Lixnaw away on Tuesday evening. The visitors dominated the play for large stretches and won 5-09 to 2-07 BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS Senior Hurling Championship - Ballyduff advanced to the Semi final of the Garvey's sponsored Co Snr Hurling Championship by virtue of a hard earned win over Crotta at Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening last .A below par first half saw us go in at halftime one pt down even though we had the advantage of a stiff breeze 1-5 to 0-9 Jack Goulding with 1-3 and pts from Podge Boyle and Eoin Ross . POST OFFICE Unfortunately the devastating news of the closure of our local Post Office has been a major blow again to the whole Community and to rural society in general. Our Post Mistress Jennifer Allen who has done unbelievable work since she took over from Noreen Keane and the Keane family who have been part of the Post Office in Bally for decades are to be thanked and acknowledged to the highest.

Her interview with Radio Kerry’s Gerry O’ Sullivan last week was excellent as she gave an accurate and detailed account of her reasons for (1) accepting the severence package offered to her by An Post, and (2) The viability of the business and how new technology has affected the business overall. In her interview she was very upfront about everything and despite being sorry to be parting the scene in the very near future, she did say in effect that if An Post had not offered her this package at this time, then more than lightly it would only be a matter of time before she would be forced to close anyway as she could not afford to keep it going as it would not be viable. While Jennifer’s departure will be of a huge loss to the people of this community she cannot be thanked enough for all the work and help she provided to so many people down the years.

The hidden work that she has done behind the scene for people is unbelievable and for that she will always be held in the highest of esteem. But the sad reality facing this Community now is that when An Post decides to end Jennifer’s contract, that will ultimately and sadly see the closure of the Post Office in Ballylongford for good and will bring an end the services that so many people in this Community relied on and generally took for granted, the small things such as paying utility bills, sorting out postage, and the collection of the pension but to mention a few were all services that were relied upon by the people of the Community which are now to be finished forever. Where our Senior Citizens go to draw their pension on Fridays is now a worry and an extra burden on them, if we need to post a package or other item outside of normal postage we will have to go to a neighbouring village or town. This is the sad reality and one that is going to destroy the very fabric of rural society as we have been accustomed to from generations before us. On this issue which is only one of umpteen issues in train that will affect our people in the very near future and also criple our communities, the deafening silence from our T.D’s and those we have elected and entrusted to look after our interests leaves a lot to be desired. Companies such as An Post and other like minded companies who cut neccessary services and who the Government of the day will support and encourage in way of paying top personnel big pensions etc are nothing short of shameful. Where in Gods name will it all end, just wait until a few years down the road when we will be told that we cannot go and cut or burn turf, and we won’t be allowed to burn Coal or Oil or that we won’t be allowed drive diesel or petrol cars indeed it is a very sad and worrying time ahead for the people of Ballylongford and indeed the other small communities in Kerry and Rural Ireland of which unfortunately nobody in authority is doing anything about. Sad, pitiful and shameful to say the least.

HISTORY BY FR FERRIS Fr Ferris who served as Parish Priest in the Parish of Ballylongford from 1943 until 1969 was a most holy and a very intelligent man who during his life wrote and published six books, including his major political work The Gaelic Commonwealth (1923) and The Story of Man (1948), He wrote five parish histories of which his History of the Parishes of Ballymacelligott, Ballyseedy, O’Brennan and Nohoval was finally published and launched on Thursday 7th June 2018 last in Ballygarry House Hotel, Tralee,

This book edited by Brendan McCarthy after five year’s work on the original manuscript, will be of immense interest not alone to natives of the parishes mentioned but to all who have in interest in life in Kerry. The book can be purchased (€15) in all good Kerry bookshops. Fr William Ferris was born in 1881 an served as a priest in various parishes in the Kerry Diocese during his career: He served in Listowel (1914-15), Firies (1915-18), Tralee (1918-22), Rathmore (1922-29), BallymacElligott (192934), Millstreet (1934-35), Allihies (1935-38), Glenflesk (1938-43) and Parish Priest of Ballylongford from (1943-69). He died in 1971 aged 90 years and is buried in the church grounds in Ballylongford.

DUAGH/LYRE COMMUNITY GAMES NOTES Munster Community Games: Best of luck to our U12 skittles team who are representing Duagh/Lyre and Kerry at the Munster Community Games competition next Saturday in a new venue of Milford. Team: Dylan Stack, Jack O Carroll, Jack Collins, Denis Gould, Aoibhínn Harte, Anghradh Cudlipp and Eimear Buckley. We wish the team every success on the day and further details on venue and time will be passed on to participants.

County Athletics: Weekend of 23rd and 24th June at An Riocht track, Castleisland in a blaze of sunshine.

Day 1: On the Saturday all Duagh/Lyre athletes were psyched up and rearing to go after a number of weeks training for the event, bottles of sun cream and water were used over the course of the day. First up we had the U8 60m on grass here we had Olivia O Brien, Sadie Duffy, Abbie McElligott and Caoimhe Fitzgerald in the girls event, this was a first time partaking the event for some of our girls. Abbie and Caoimhe got through the first round and in the quarter finals Abbie got through in second place for the semi-finals on Sunday. In the boys U8 60m here we had Jack Sheehy finishing 5th in the heat, John Ryan and Michael O Connor 4th in heat and going through to the quarter final and unlucky not to go through to semi-finals. In the boys u8 80m here Fionn Doorley, Adam Shanahan, Liam Galvin and Marc Kelly, out of the group Liam Galvin got a fall in the quarter finals and recovered well to win and get through to the semi on Sunday. In the girls u8 80m here Heidi Buckley, Brianne Batten and Kate Sheridan with Kate winning both races and securing a place in the semi-finals. A lot of our younger athletes are new

to this and done really well on the day and we hope that you are back again next year with some still under age for u8’s. In the U10 100m we had Thomas Kelly in the boys, Chloe Dillon, Asia Fitzgerald, Catherine Buckley and Liza McMahon with both Catherine and Lisa making it through to the quarter finals. In the quarter finals Liza finished 4th with only the first three going through. In the U10 200m Mark Lane, Ashton Kelly and Gavin O Brien, here Mark finished 4th and again only the first three going through, Ashton finished 2nd and secured a place in the quarter finals finishing just outside the placings. In the u10 hurdles here Cian Dowling and Thomas Cahill rose to the challenge after a few practices on the hurdles the boys done exceptionally well both qualifying for the semi-finals on Sunday. In the U12 boys 100m Oisín O Regan, Dylan Buckley and Ronan Sheridan all qualified for quarter finals with Oisín coming through in 4th to secure a semi-final place on Sunday. In the U12 girls 100m Saoirse Dillon, Eimear Buckley, Aoibhínn Harte and Anghradh Cudlipp participated, Saoirse sailing home in both races in first along with Eimear Buckley, Aoibhinn finishing 4th with only three to qualify and Anghradh finishing 5th. Both Saoirse and Eimear put in great runs to secure a semi-final place. In the U12 200m Gavin Dillon won his heat to go to semifinals on Sunday along with Daibhead O’Regan finishing 3rd, Odhran Doorley just outside the placings. In the U12 girls 200m Leyra Moriarty and Hayley McElligott ran with Leyra qualifying for a place in the semi-final. In the U14 boys Fearghal Cudlipp and Mike Galvin both qualified for semi-final places for Sunday. In the 600m with three athletes here James Dillon, Dylan Stack and Luke Sheridan, Luke put in a fantastic run in 1st to secure a place in the final on Sunday. Noelle Dillon ran in the u12 600m and ran a great race just outside the qualifiers. In the field events on Saturday the first gold medal came from Dylan Buckley in the U12 ball throw, Duagh/Lyre had two athletes Luke Sheridan and Dylan Buckley. Dylan got through to the last eight and secured three mores throws, prior to his last throw he had to leave the event and run in the 100m quarter finals, Dylan got his energy up and threw a whopper of a throw over 50m to win the competition and secure a place at National finals, best of luck Dylan who now represents Kerry. In the U12 girls ball throw Leyra Moriarty, Holly Horgan and Anghradh Cudlipp took part, Leyra getting through to the last eight and finished 4thoverall winning the certificate. In the U14 javelin Mike Galvin had his throwing arm at the ready and won a silver medal with a pb. In the long jump the second gold medal of the day came from Ronan Sheridan, this is a County event only at the U12 age category, congrats Ronan, also competing here was Gavin Dillon. The last event on the track were the relays here we had three teams – U10 mixed, U12 boys and girls. The U10 mixed team of Cian Dowling, Thomas Cahill, Lisa McMahon, Asia Fitzgerald, Catherine Buckley and Tomas Kelly won well to go through to semi-finals. In the U12 boys Luke Sheridan, Ronan Sheridan, Oisín O Regan, Gavin Dillon, Dylan Buckley and Dylan Stack qualifying for the final on Sunday. In the U12 girls Aoibhinn Harte, Saoirse Dillon, Anghradh Cudlipp, Eimear Buckley, Leyra Moriarty and Noelle Dillon won the semi-final with a lot to spare and secured a place in the final on Sunday. The last event of the day was the long puck in the boys Oisín and Daibhead O Regan took part but outside the placings.

In the U14 girls Tara O Regan was best on the day and won gold, Tara now goes through to the National Finals in UL and represents Kerry, well done Taraa lot of extra work for the volunteers.

Co. Junior League Group 4 - Backgame: An Ghaeltacht B 5-17 Emmets B 2-06 Co. Senior League Div 2 - Round 8: Listowel Emmets V Kenmare In a vital game for both teams it was the home side that came out on top after a gruelling affair in the blistering heat in Frank Sheehy Park.

Emmets started very brightly and went three points to no score up through a brace from David Keane and the excellent David Sheehy before Kenmare responded with two good scores from Seanie O Leary and Kevin O'Sullivan.

Noel Kennnelly put two between them a minute later after selling a nice dummie to his marker. Temperatures were beginning to rise and this was also the case on the field of play as there were some classic battles beginning to unfold, most notably between young Eddie Browne and the experienced Paul O'Connor who linked well with his teammates setting up the next score for Shane O'Sullivan before Dylan Price levelled matters. The final ten minutes of the half belonged to the home side however as points from Sam Tarrant, David Sheehy and two more from the accurate David Keane sent Emmets in at half time 4 to the good. Half time: Emmets 0-08 Kenmare 0-04 The second half was a great spectacle with both sides kicking some fine scores with Niall Collins and Eddie Browne driving Listowel forward at every opportunity and David Hallissey keeping Kenmare ticking over at midfield. Kevin Price and Paul O'Connor put two between them once more before Tom McCarthy set up David Sheehy who fired a rocket to the top corner to keep Emmets in front with a nice cushion. This game was only getting going however as Kenmare kept plugging away through scores from O'Connor and being honest it was too hard to call at times. Sheehy dispatched two penalties in the final quarter to complete his hat-trick and round off a terrific individual display while O'Connor and David Hallissey goaled for the away side.

It would ultimately be Listowel Emmets day however as they ran out winners by the slimmest of margins on a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-13.

LISTOWEL ATHLETIC CLUB

The month of July in athletics is the month where the athletic year winds up with national finals at all ages in the coming weeks. The club and athletes has worked hard since last September and reaching a national final is a great reward. Last Sunday in Tullamore, Lios Tuathail AC young athletes in the U9 – U11 age group was certainty the best represented Kerry club and came home with a bag of national medals. This was based on a team event where two athletes from the club would combine their result to give a team score, so to medal at this event you needed good quality athletes.

Best team on the day was the combination of Amy oConnor and Tally Collins, who won silver medals in the u11 60m sprint and U11 Long Jump. This was a fabulous performance by both girls across two events. Amy and Tally combined with Holly Boyle, Caoimhe Lynch and Katie Walsh to run a great relay in the semi final to qualify for the final. They were just outside the medals in the final but must be very happy with the experience. Fantastic throwing by Thomas Cahill and Odhran Buckley in the U10 Turbo Javelin won national Bronze. Just outside the medals in fourth were Steve Reidy and Odhran Buckley in the U10 60m, where Steve put in the best time of the day. In the U10 Long Jump, Steve and Ajay Barrett combined to finish fourth with only 1cm off a medal position. Our U11 pairing of Jeremiah Galvin and Ronan Sheridan were also fourth in the U11 Turbo javelin. Our U9 Relay team were just pipped for the Bronze medal in the relay, Team consisted of Thomas Scanlon, Shane Mason, Liam Galvin, Alex Collins and Eoin Cuddigan.

Great running by this young team.

Well done to all athletes who has performed very well on the national stage and are not out of their depth at this level. Great work by all the coaches who has worked tirelessly throughout the year. A big thank you to the parents who have given great commitment with these athletes.

Beale seniors succumbed to the challenge of table toppers, Gneeveguilla, in round eight of the County Senior League, Division 4, on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-13. We host Fossa, on July 15th and at the end of July, we play Tarbert. We welcome St Michael’s, Foilmore, to Ballybunion for our final round game on August 12th.

Beale juniors lost out to Moyvane by 2 points in Group 8 of the County League on Thursday evening in Páirc de Staic. We travel to Firies on Friday for our final round game.

Beale minors contest Division 1 of the North Kerry League, with our opening round game against Desmonds on Thursday, 12th July, at 7.30pm in Castleisland. Other teams in this division are Knocknagoshel/Brosna/Duagh, Emmets and Moyvane/Tarbert.

Congrats to Cormac Linnane and the Kerry Under-20s who were crowned Munster champions last Friday evening, overcoming Cork by 3-11 to 0-14.

Shannon Rangers Minors kicked off the County Championship on Tuesday evening, with a 3-9 to 2-7 win over South Kerry in Ballybunion. Beale players on the Rangers team were Diarmuid O’Mahoney. David Hennessy, Luke O’Donovan, Paddy O’Rourke, Seán Moloney, Bernard O’Callaghan, Eric Daly and substitute, Mark Hennessy. The next round game will be against St Kieran’s in Cordal. County League Division 5 Phase2 Rd 1 A result - Duagh 0-13 v Asdee 0-15, A great team perform saw Asdee beat Duagh in Phase 2 Rd 1,Duagh started off the faster with points from play by Kieran Quirke and Tom Scanlon in 2 minutes followed by a Michael Kirby point on 7th minute all from play to put Duagh3pts up. From a good move Paul O Carroll pointed from play and again from play on 20th minute Jack Keane pointed for Asdee .

Duaghs Shanahan had 2 points from play to increase the Duagh lead and Tom Scanlon again from play restored a 3 point lead for Duagh. With half time approaching Asdee had a great patch with Eoin Tydings, Darragh Keane and Jack Keane all pointing to level the scores 0-5 all at half time.

On resumption Kieran Quirke pointed from play for Duagh but 3 points from play by Cyril Dineen,(2) and Darragh Keane put Asdee in the lead for the first time. Dan O Donoghue and Scannell pointed for Duagh but Mike Breen and Conor Keane restored the Asdee lead by 20th minute. Scannell then pointed for Duagh on 25th minute followed by a pointed free for Asdee on 26th minute by Mike Breen. Michael Kirby for Duagh and Darragh Keane for Asdee then had points and Asdee were 2 up with the end approaching. A good move for Duagh followed with the ball ending in the Asdee net however the umpire and referee consulted and deemed it a square ball and it was disallowed. Duagh reduced the gap to a point but a good Asdee move along the sideline ended with a point, the final score and Asdee were winners by 2.

Senior County League: Ballylongford 0-11 Tarbert 2-15 Tarbert continued their push for promotion with ten points to spare over Ballylongford at shannon Park on a sunny Saturday evening. Tarbert opened the scoring with a Gavin Breen point in the 6th minute and they went on to kick a further five without reply before Ciaran O'Connor got Bally off the

mark with a pointed free in the 12th minute further points from Joe McCarthy and Jason Deegan closed the gap but Tarbert pulled away and led by three points at half time. Ballylongford had the ball in the net in the 19th minute but the play was called back for an earlier free leaving the half time score Tarbert 0-10 Ballylongford 0-7.

Two second half goals from Andrew Doherty in the 2nd minute and a second from Shay McDonald seven minutes later gave Tarbert a commanding lead one they would hold to the final whistle. Ballylongford battled to the end and were unlucky not to grab a couple of goals,firstly Jamie Diggins made a great save in the 16th minute while Jason Deegan's shot was just wide of the post five minutes later.

SCL Div 5: Moyvane lost out away to Valentia in the Division 5 Senior County League on Saturday last. After a great start to the game Moyvane led by 5 points to no score after 15 minutes, playing against the wind. 2 goals saw Valentia go in at half time 2-8 to 8pts. Moyvane showed great heart in the second half and some fine moves led to 3 goals from Jerry Clancy, Joe Coulson and Shea Leahy. Although Valentia got the win, Moyvane ended the game with a score of 3-10 which showed their determination and heart, especially in the second half. Final score Moyvane 3-10, Valentia 2-16.

SNKL Div 3 Semi Final: Moyvane will play Ballylongford in the Semi-Final of the Division 2 Senior North Kerry League on Saturday, July 7th at 7.00pm.

Under 12 County League: Bally/Asdee 5–24 -v- Ballydonoghue 5-9 This local Derby in this under 12 county league encounter between Ballylongford/ Asdee and Ballydonoghue was played in glorious sunshine in O Rahilly Park in front of a great local crowd with the very young home side coming out on top. A very sporting encounter was served up with some great play from both sides. Ballylongford asdee started off strongly with great interplay between Oisin Healy, who delivered a man of the match performance, and Sean O connor yielding 2 early goals. Goals and superb points followed from Oisin Healy, Sean O Connor, Cathal Byrne and Roisin Fogarty and Ballylongford Asdee had a strong lead at half time. Ballylongford Asdee started well in the second half but a super comeback was mounted giving Ballydonoghue a fighting chance with 3 goals, however further exceptional points from Oisin Healy, Sean O Connor, Cathal Byrne and Roisin Fogarty with Cathal Byrne snatching a late goal securing the victory for the home side.

Result: Senior Co League Senans made the trip to Lispole on Sunday last and were beaten on a score of Lispole 1-11 St Senans 0-10. Lispole were awarded a penalty after three minutes and and raised a green flag. Lispole led throughout and were the stronger team on the day. There was a long break in the first half after an injury to a Lispole player and on the thirty fifth minute of play both sides were reduced to fourteen men. After the break Lispole pushed on and James Barry Senans goalie was called on to make some fantastic saves. Wishing the Lispole player a speedy recovery.

Congrats: Well done to Sean T Dillon a member of the Kerry junior panel crowned Munster champions beating Cork on a score of 2-14 to 1-15.

Congrats to the Kerry under 20's who also beat Cork to claim another Munster title well done to Eamon Whelan selector with the team.

Duagh hurlers won their second round game of the South Kerry Hurling League at home in Duagh on Wednesday evening the 27th of June to St. Pats, East Kerry. The game was a 13 a side match and was played in sweltering heat. It took both teams a while to get to grips with the very dry and firm pitch. It was hard for players to judge the bounce of the sliotar. The first half was very evenly contested.

Points from Niall O 'Sullivan, Shane O 'Sullivan and two from Ger Guerin, who also scored a stunning goal, put Duagh into a 1-4 to 0-3 lead at half time. Duagh should have had more scores but for some poor finishing and great goalkeeping by the St. Pat's net minder.

The game was a tight affair again in the second half, but a goal from Kevin Quilter and two more points from Ger Guerin kept Duagh in front. Nigel Doorley was solid in goals for Duagh and their backs in particular Neilo Keane, Shane O 'Driscoll and Tim Quirke were on top and kept St. Pats scores to only four points in the second half. Further points from the energetic midfield duo of Niall O'Sullivan and Micheal Kirby put Duagh further ahead.

Their fitness and hurling really came to the fore on such a physically draining evening. Duagh had the luxury of a numbers of subs, unlike St. Pats who had to soldier on with their starting lineout and this took its toll on them in the hot conditions. A late goal that was rifled home to the back of the net by Brian O'Connell settled the match for Duagh.

Final score was Duagh 3-8 - St. Pats 0-7.

Again both teams deserve great credit for a very good game of hurling played in temperatures touching near 30°.

Players from Tralee Parnells and Causeway took time to pose with young players and imparted words of advice to the girls who may one day don the Green & Gold.

LISSELTON GIRLS SKILLS TOP NORTH KERRY Congratulations to Caoimhe, Kiara and Kayleigh on winning the North Kerry Girl's U Can Skill Awards 2018. It was a fiercely contested competition but the girls came out on top with three strong individual scores. A special congratulations also for Kiara, who finished with the third highest individual score on the day, from a field of over thirty talented girls. Also a huge congratulations to Kayleigh on winning the individual trophy on the day having been the girl with the highest score out of the whole field, and winning the tie breaker. This is the first time the school has won the competition and it was a great success to also come home with two of the top three individual awards also.

The girls continued their excellent form in the Conuty Finals of the Girls U Can Skill Awards in John Mitchels with a strong showing. There was a high level of skill on show, but our girls shone and were deserving of the second place trophies they won at the end of the day.

It is a huge achievement for the girls, being the first ever team from the school to achieve such success in this competition, competing against the champions from each region of Kerry.
