Comhaltas Honour Lixnaw’s Maura Walsh

Yogalates…A First For Kerry Local ladies Ann and Geraldine have created an exciting fusion of Yoga, Pilates and “Barre” work… the first in Kerry. They will be bringing a new exercise class to Listowel, unlike any exercise routine you have experienced before.

These classes are suitable for all adult fitness levels and ages, with modifications available for all exercises. There will be 8 classes per week to choose from and a Friday class at 10am, which is a morning stretch that targets beginners and those who want a gentle workout of stretching combined with toning.

Ann is a Fitness Instructor with 34 years teaching experience, ranging from fitness coach with Thurles Sarsfield GAA Club, gymnastics for children, mixed gym classes and ladies strength training. Geraldine is a Pilates Instructor, a keen runner participating in numerous fitness events, and with her nursing credentials has an extensive knowledge of the workings of the body.

Comhaltas honour a number of people every year at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann who have made a significant contribution to the promotion of a variety of aspects of traditional Irish culture. This year we are delighted to announce Maura Walsh Lixnaw CCE in being honored with this prestigious award. Congrats Maura from CCE Kerry County Board and all it’s members in Kerry.

Maura Walsh from Lixnaw began her musical career at the young age of just seven.

At that time, the Ceolann building in Lixnaw was not in existence so music classes were taught locally at the old dispensary by Brian Keane (brother of the late Diarmuid O’Cathain). In later years, she went on to learn music from Ann & Nicky McAuliffe, who imparted to her, their vast repertoire of music & it’s cultural heritage.

It was Diarmuid O’Cathain’s lifelong vision to have a purpose built venue where cultural activities would be taught and preserved, thus the Ceolann opened it’s door in 1985. Diarmuid was also a major musical influence to Maura. He brought Ireland’s finest musicians, dancers and singers to the Ceolann for annual ‘Celebrity Concerts’ over the years. The list of names is endless but to mention a few - Joe Burke, Seamus Connolly, Brian Conway, Eileen O Brien, Willie Fogarty, Martin Connolly, Kathleen Nesbitt, Paddy Ryan were regular artistes. This exposure to high quality music at such a young age had a major influence on Maura in her formative years.

Maura went on to win a senior All Ireland Concertina title in Clonmel in 1993. She toured extensively over the years with groups such as Ceol Chiarraí, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, and Siamsa Tíre, taking her to Europe, America, Australia, Dubai & Singapore. She also worked as co-producer on Irish, UK & American Comhaltas tours.

She teaches extensively at local and national level and featured at summer schools such as the Scoil Eigse at the All-Ireland. She has had numerous success with her students competing at provincial and All Ireland level. She works also as a tutor on the TTCT teachers course which is governed by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

Maura is a highly-respected musician, teacher and adjudicator for many years and continues to pass on her knowledge, love and passion of the traditional music to her students.

RTÉ’s Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result in front of nearly one million television viewers and an audience of 2000 people in the Festival Dome last Tuesday night.

Jennifer (24) was presented with her sash and tiara by 2016 Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney and Robbie Scanlan, Managing Director of Tipperary Crystal, lead sponsors of the Festival.

Top Irish country singer, Derek Ryan serenaded Jennifer in the Dome and again on Denny Street in the heart of Tralee, where thousands of people turned out for the Midnight Madness Parade and fireworks display.

Speaking straight after the announcement, Jennifer Byrne said: “I think my heart is about to jump out of my chest but I’m really, really excited and I genuinely can’t believe it, it’s fantastic. My first thought was ‘did Dáithí actually just say my name, I wasn’t really expected it at all’. I thought ‘this is going to be incredible’. Maggie McEldowney is an unbelievable representative for the Rose of Tralee and I’ll be asking her for a few tips because I have got big boots to fill now.”

A sports enthusiast, Jennifer has played soccer and Gaelic football from a very early age, and has represented Ireland in soccer at U17 and U19 level and in the World University Games.

64 Roses took part in the 2017 Rose of Tralee International Festival and already, Jennifer Byrne has encouraged Irish women everywhere in the world to consider entering the 2018 Rose of Tralee: “It has been absolutely fantastic. Even meeting up in Kildare we had a great time getting to know the girls, the very first night we got into our county jerseys and comfortable clothes and we really bonded as a group from there. From Kildare we came to Tralee and the Festival has been incredible, the parade was definitely the most fantastic experience of my life – well up until now anyway. I have enjoyed every minute of it and I have made such good friends with the girls and they are all incredible women”.

C.D. LAUNCH Míchéal Keane formerly of Rusheen, Ballylongford and now residing in Tuam, Co. Galway will host a sing along CD Launch in the Parish Hall, Ballylongford on Friday, August 25, at 8pm.

Songs on Micheal C.D include such favorites as Hard Times, Neidin, Boston Buglar, Hills of Kerry, My Donegal Shore, and These are My Mountains plus many more are on the C.D. All proceeds will go towards Special Needs Children. Michéal has been fundraising for over 20 years for Special Needs Children and is doing fabulous work over that period of time.

DEATH The death of Michael (Mick) Moore from Tarmons-Balinoe, at the Oaklands Nursing Home, Derry, Listowel on August 10, 2017. Mick was a quiet and decent gentleman who liked the simple things in life. He was predeceased by his wife Maureen by a few years. Mick was waked at Lyons Funeral Home, Derry, Listowel on Friday, August 11, from 6 to 8pm. Requiem mass was concelebrated in St. Mary's Church, Tarbert on Saturday, August 12 at 11am by Fr Sean Hanafin, Fr John O’Connor, Fr Philip O’Connell and Fr James O’Hanlon. Sincere sympathy is extended all his relatives, neighbours and friends. Interment took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery Tarbert. May He Rest in Peace!

Entertainment for the children, will be a bouncy castle and face painting, there will be music for all after the races have finished.

Raffle tickets will be sold on the night, 1st prize is a trailer of turf, 2nd prize is 2 All Ireland Football tickets and 3rd prize is a Meal for 2. The raffle tickets will be drawn and winners announced on the night. If you’re not in, you can’t win. These are exciting times for our Club. The highlight of 2016 was when our minors won the County Championship for the first time in the Club’s history. 2017 has also written another line in the history of the club with our U16 team winning the County Championship ‘A’ Final in Abbeydorney on 13th of August.

The club continues to field teams at all age groups and levels. The development of our facilities at Dromakee is now well under way, the field was completed earlier this year. This fundraiser is to fund the completion of the training areas. Our recent success and increasing members makes us even more determined to continue to improve our facilities for all our current and future players. The future is bright.

We would like to extend a massive Thank you to so many people.

The response from everyone has been overwhelming. Without the support, good wishes and generosity of so many people none of this would be possible. The local community, our neighbouring communities and communities further afield have been very welcoming. A huge Thank you must be extended to our race sponsors.

COISTE NA NÓG The Under 10's took part in the annual Eoin Griffin Memorial football blitz on Saturday. This is the main competitive blitz for this group which has been honing their craft during a series of Go-games blitzes all summer. The tournament started with a match against Bally/Asdee which Ballyduff won, pulling away late. This was followed by a loss to the home favourites in an exciting battle. Finally, Ballyduff survived a strong performance from Ballydonoghue in the final round-robin game to qualify for the final rematch against the hosts. These teams have contested this final many times before so the atmosphere was intense, in keeping with the developing rivalry. Beale started slower than they did in the earlier match, allowing Ballyduff to pepper their goal and take an early lead. The home side fought back, however and it fell to Ballyduff goalkeeper Tadgh O’Connor to pull off a string of amazing saves either side of half time to keep the visitors noses in front. The game turned when a high ball that had dropped into the goal area was parried away by the Ballyduff netminder only to be judged to have crossed the line by the umpire. Beale rode the resulting momentum into injury time and managed to point two long efforts in the extra minutes to win by a single point. The Ballyduff players, while devastated to have come so close and fallen at the last hurdle, can be justifiably proud for a string of fantastic performances and an amazing final spectacle. What a team and what a future.

The Under 13's were also in a final this week. They played Lixnaw in the North Kerry Hurling League final on Wednesday evening. The match was contested by teams of completely opposite styles. Ballyduff moved the ball methodically up the pitch, using their speed, skill and pace. Lixnaw countered with long drives and powerful midfield play. In the end, The darting runs of man-of-the-match Kieran O’Carroll as well as some excellent support play all over the pitch wore down the Lixnaw side and Ballyduff ran away comfortable winners. Captain Anthony Kavanagh accepted the trophy on behalf of the delighted team and coaches. Well done on a remarkable performance.

The Under 15's were in hurling action at home to Abbeydorney on Tuesday. The home side had the better of play throughout and won well in the end.

The Under 16 footballers were also in action, falling to Fossa in the Lee Strand County League Division Six Final in Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Wednesday. The result only tells part of the tale, however. Having trailed by 11 points at the end of the first half, Ballyduff managed to claw their way into a two point lead at one point before fading late on. The boys fought hard all the way and never gave up, even when faced with overwhelming odds. They deserve immense credit for their efforts and maturity.

Well done all!

So it was a great week for our young football and hurling teams. Special congratulations are due to everyone who makes local sport so positive and exciting in our village.

LADY'S WALK HURLING County Junior Hurling Championship Result: Duagh 2 - 4 Lady's Walk 2 - 14. Our second win puts us through to the County Final. WHEELCHAIR HURLING/CAMOGIE PROVINCIAL LEAGUE This year the Munster leg of the GAA Inter Provincial Wheelchair Hurling League will be held at John Mitchells GAA club, Tralee on this Saturday August 26th from approximately10.30 am until 2.30 pm.

Wheelchair Hurling can be described as ground Hurling played by Wheelchair users.

It is a sport for persons of all abilities and age, male and female. It was invented in a Dublin special needs school by school principal Tim Maher in 1998. Tim is a Kerryman from Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. Each year 2 Wheelchair Hurling competitions (a League and an All Ireland Competition) are run with a team from each of the four Provinces taking part. Each team comprises players from a number of counties within the Province. The League competition consists of games in each of the 4 provinces, while the All Ireland series is a one day event, played at the end of the year.

Jerry O’Sullivan, Chairman of Munster Council GAA will be on hand to welcome all teams to the Kingdom. Founding Wheelchair Hurling member, Tim Maher (Lixnaw) also plans to attend.

All teams will play three games on the day. Points will be awarded to teams, with the total determining the league winners at the end of the season. There is one Kerryman on the Munster team – Cian Horgan Wallace, Listowel.

Minor Hurling: Ballyduff minor Hurling team had a good win over Kilmoyley on Thursday evening last on a scoreline of 5 – 12 to 2 – 8. While it was a great team effort the display of Darragh Goulding at full forward where he scored 5 – 2 was

GREAT WEEK FOR MOYVANE UNDER AGE PLAYERS Who enjoyed quite an extraordinary week on the playing fields. In the first of four finals there was a tremendous start for the u14’s who gave an excellent display against St. Senans in claiming the Division 1 NKL shield.

This was quickly followed by the Minors who had a great win over Beale on Tuesday and on Wednesday evening the u16’s were exceptionally unlucky to lose by 1 point to Finuge with a goal coming in the last minute.

As you read these notes, the 2017 Rose of Tralee will have been selected and our hopes and wishes go with Aisling. Whatever the outcome, she has been a wonderful credit to her family, a very worthy ambassador for her home village and indeed the whole of Kerry and a wonderful ambassador for the Sydney Rose Centre whom she proudly and expertly represented, No doubt but she will cherish this wonderful experience and remember it for the rest of her life. Well done.

Duagh/Lyre was represented across three areas - Athletics, Art and Cycling on Grass.

Athletics: On Saturday saw athletes Saoirse Dillion and Mike Galvin take to the track in Abbotstown. This year was the first year in a long while that the National finals were run on grass and it seemed that the track was nicely laid out for the athletes. First up was Saoirse Dillon no stranger to National finals with this trip making it her third in a row.

Saoirse was running in the U10 100m and she just makes it look so easy and takes it all in her stride. Saoirse ran a powerful race and won her heat qualifying her to the semi-finals on Sunday morning. A beautiful picture in action was taken by Community games and it is shown on our Facebook page, she looks like the female version of Usain Bolt in action. Next up was Mike Galvin taking part in his first National finals in Community Games this year and we are sure the first of many. All the training had been put in and it was time to show what was in him and having the belief to shine. Mike ran a comfortable race and finished a strong third to secure his place in the semi-finals on

On Sunday morning down here in Kerry you would call it a washout and most people taking the road to Croke Park but the action for our participants was in Abbotstown for the athletics semifinals. The sun was shining and our competitors like all others were soaking up the atmosphere in sun filled Abbotstown. First up was Saoirse in her semi-final, racing in a strong and competitive field Saoirse held her nerve and powered home the winner and securing her place in the final. Next up was Mike and having had a race the day before settled Mike and he found a great stride and finished second securing a place in the National final. With the heavy rain given for the afternoon it wasn't long before the finals were called for our excited athletes - a place secured in National Finals and in the top eight of their age group in the Country. Saoirse was up in the U10 final and all prepped for her race in a competitive field. At the half way stage Saoirse found herself with some work to do and anyone that knows this gutsy girl knows she leads from the front, so it may have been unusual for her to be a little behind. This wasn't going to be for long as she found her "next gear" as only Saoirse can do and she took off and took the victory another National Gold to add to her collection. Congratulations Saoirse we are all so proud of you and the effort that you have made, thanks to Dad Thomas for the coaching over the summer to keep Saoirse's fitness up. Next up was Mike Galvin in the U12 100m final, his first National Community Games final. Mike was excited to make the final and was well up for the task in hand.

Anyone who knows Mike would know that he is coolness personified and get on with the task in hand, Mike did not disappoint and he ran superbly with great passion and strides. Mike finished in 6th place overall and extremely delighted that he had done so well. Thanks to Thomas Dillon for the coaching sessions over the past few weeks. With all his family and his Gran Aunt on hand to watch him in action. Mike had the important job of being Grand Marshall representing Kerry at the Community Games parade to start the Athletics festival alongside Jerry Davenport President of National Community Games, memories made for life. Well done Mike we are all so proud of you and your achievements.

Cycling on Grass: Over to Crokage Park, Nuala Moloney representing Duagh/Lyre and Kerry took to the grass for the cycling event. This is a relatively new event for Nuala and she has put in some great efforts in training since qualifying in the County competition. Nuala is a young lady with some determination for her age, she never gives up and is relentless in all her endeavours. This has been evident earlier this year where Nuala has been part of a team that won County and League Basketball titles along County and North Kerry football titles so she is always striving to achieve. On Sunday morning Nuala got kitted out for the semi-finals and put in a huge effort to win her semi-final comfortably 2km race with eight hot spots taking all hot spots on offer. In just a few short hours later it was time for the final putting the cream of the crop out to take the glorious prizes up for grabs. Nuala again got on with the job, taking the cycling of 2km in her stride, again eight hot spots on offer. When the results were calculated Nuala had won a National Silver medal and I'm sure she had the biggest smile on her face for her efforts. We are all so proud of your achievements Nuala.

Clodagh Murphy had a very busy weekend taking part in the Fleadh Cheoil in Ennis and then hurrying to Dublin to represent Listowel and Kerry in the Under 16 Solo music on Saturday. Clodagh played fabulously on Saturday, well done you're a star!

Cara Leahy did incredibly well in the Under 10 handwriting competition, such an achievement to get to Nationals, amazing well done!

Massive congratulations to Ellen Trant who won a bronze medal in the model making competition. Ellen created an absolutely beautiful piece of a swimmer. Well done Ellen on an incredible achievement.

Emma Neylon represented Kerry in the Girls U10 200m Emma did her County proud and we are sure we will be seeing a lot more from this very talented athlete.

Our Under 13 mixed relay team did incredibly well at the weekend winning their semi final on Saturday and just narrowly missing out on a medal in the final on Sunday. Have no doubt we will be seeing a lot more from this talented bunch in the future! The team were Rachel Neylon, Ethan Tritschler, Aisling Leahy, Louis O’Connell and Eille Ava Liston.

The nights are getting shorter and the season of Autumn is nigh. For many of the sport enthusiasts, it means that another Badminton season is about to commence.

The local Listowel Badminton Senior Club, which is almost 110 years "serving" the people of Listowel will commence for the new 2017/2018 season at St Michaels Gym on Monday week next, September 4th and will continue on the following Tues/Weds nights.Those that wish to play over race week can contact any committee member and arrangements can be made. The first night at the Community Centre will be Thurs. Sept 21st. All times from 8 pm If you have not played the game of Badminton before why not come along and give it a chance. Badminton is noted in the Guinness Book of records as the fastest of all Racquet Sports and it is a sport that knows no age barrier So come along and have a go, outside of the competitive side of the sport, Badminton is an exceptionally Social sport also.

Beale minors came up short in the final of the North Kerry League, Division 2, against Moyvane/Tarbert. Our opponents settled in to the game much better and we found it difficult to get off the mark. However we turned on the style in the second half but by this time, Moyvane/Tarbert had put their mark on the game. Beale juniors contest the opening round of the Cahill Cup on Monday (Aug 21st) evening against Brosna in Páirc de Staic, Ballybunion, at 7.30.

Hopes of staying in Division 4 of the County League are kept alive with Beale seniors' recent comprehensive win over Firies. Ballybunion is the venue again for our final round game against Sneem/Derrynane on September 24th. A date for the quarter final of the County Novice Club Championship against Moyvane has yet to be decided.

Beale seniors take on St Senans in the North Kerry Championship. Our juniors received a bye in the first round and our minors take on Knocknagoshel/Brosna in the opening round. Beale join forces again this year with Ballylongford and Asdee for the North Kerry Under-21 Championship. We have been drawn to play St Senans in the quarter final.

All 16 club delegates including local club delegate, Mark O Hanlon within the North Kerry Football Board were in attendance at McMunns Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion who are sponsors of the North Kerry Senior Football Championship on Wednesday evening August 16. Prior to the draw North Kerry Football Board Chairman Johnny Stack welcomed everybody to the meeting; then calling on the previous Chairman, Billy Enright who finished his term of office in 2016 due to the five year rule and who was made a presentation to acknowledge the tremendous amount of work having served the Board over a 27 year period as Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and P R O on two occasions along with been involved with his Club Ballylongford and Shannon Rangers. Draws were made for Intermediate, Junior, Minor and Novice Championships but the highlight of the night being the draw for the Bernard O Callaghan Memorial Senior Football Championship.

All eyes were on the bowl as competition sponsor Greg Ryan of McMunns Bar and Restaurant did the honours.

Asdee were draen at home to Knocknagoshel at Walsh Park; both teams are having problems with numbers not playing well and one would imagine either wont be in the shake up at the business end of the championship.

So I suppose; Ballydonoghue, Finuge, Listowel Emmets, Castleisland Desmonds and either Beale or St. Senans would be in the shake up for the Eamon O Donoghue Cup. Asdee/Bally took on Duagh at Walsh Park, Asdee on Monday evening last in the North Kerry league but could never come to terms with a much more physical and determined visitors who had this game wrapped up at the interval when leading 5-12 to 3-3 with goals coming from Sean O Connor and Cathal Byrne. Result: St Senans 0-11 Laune Rangers 1-07 Senans entertained Laune Rangers in a close game with both sides anxious for league points. The visitors attacked from the throw in, but the Senans backs turned over the ball and Jason Browne opened the scoring with a point.

Cathal Kennelly and Sean O’Connell increased the lead to three points before Colm O’Shea pointed from a free for Ranger’s first score. Maurice Foley and O’Connell exchanged points before two frees from Colm O’Shea had the sides level at the end of the quarter. Colm O’Shea with his fifth point (f) gave Laune Ranger a point lead at the break 0-06 to 0-05.

Padraig Quille had the side’s level again on the restart and Senans with the aid of the breeze in the second half went into a three point lead. Cian O’Shea got through for a goal leading to a frantic final ten minutes. Sean O’Connell pointed giving Senans the advantage and with the Senans backs defended ferociously they held on to win by a single point. Best wishes to Brendan O’Connell and Alan Kennelly for a speedy recovery.

Well done to Grainne Daughton Leam who won a competition to be a flag bearer in Croke Park on Sunday last, Grainne travels to support Kerry all over the country.

Clounmacon were on top now in all quarters and the versatile Mike Horgan won a ball he shouldn't have, laying off to Greaney, who in turn found Grimes and he kicked a beauty off the outside of his right boot. Shortly after when a high kick towards the square wasn't dealt with by Desmonds defence, Stephen Mc got a fist to the ball and punched his team into an 8 point lead.

A long run by Joe Joe Grimes found Chris Lyons in space and he popped a fine score. Stephen Bartlett replied with a free at the other end just before the Senans ref blew for half time. Score 1-08 to 0-3. The game resumed at 8:02pm and all wondering would Clounmacon hold on, or could the men in blue come back into the reckoning. Brian Greaney had something to say about that in the 1st minute, kicking a great score into the wind. Niall O Sullivan had been introduced at half-time with Seamus Twomey reverting to a sweepers role and this proved to be a master stroke by the management, as Desmonds found it hard to get any change from these guys, ably supported by Kelly, Collins and co. However Castleisland did get through in the 8th minute for a goal to give them hope but it was Clounmacon who drove on again and though it would be some time before the next score, O Hanlon obliged from the right wing followed immediately by a Grimes point, his fourth of the evening. In the 26th minute, Desmonds scored to reduce the deficit to 6 but it proved to be the final act of the night. As the referee blew for his last time, there was joyous scenes with supporters coming out to the field, congratulating their heroes of the evening. And that they were, each and every one of them. County titles for this small club can be counted on one hand and so this team deserve all the plaudits for this great victory.

Desmonds, having 5 senior players in their ranks had no answer to the hungrier Black and Amber boys on the night. Huge praise must go to the management team for having the team in such a great shape and getting their calls spot on for the final. Christy Killeen handed over the prize to the proud captain Timmy Mulvihill who himself was excellent all through the game.

Everyone played their part to ensure this historic victory but man of the match was undoubtedly the birthday boy, Joe Joe Grimes, who worked tirelessly at midfield as well as kicking 4 points from play. Onwards and upwards for Mike Sheehy and his men! Final score, Clounmacon 1-11. Castleisland Desmonds 1-05.

Blustery conditions for the month of August, it wasn't ideal for football but sure all were content to be at the venue, that was in very good condition. Clounmacon were playing with a stiff breeze in the first half with Chris Lyons opening the scoring as he drilled over from long range after 2 minutes. This was quickly followed by a short free to JJ Grimes and he opened his account for the evening from 30 yards. The Black and Amber looked to be very sharp at this early stage.

Desmonds replied with a score from play soon after but great work by Robbie O Hanlon down the stand side, led to his own score. In the 10th minute Clounmacon broke out of defence and a pass from O Hanlon to Grimes put him through for his second point. Straight from the kick out Johnny Toomey took the mark and a splendid run through, though under pressure he split the posts for a 5 to 1 lead. Desmonds attacked with vigour and looked dangerous kicking a point to stay in touch. In the 14th minute, as Stephen McCarthy attacked, he was pulled to the ground inside the large parallelogram and Seamus Mulvihill whistled loudly as he pointed to the spot. Lyons

Congratulations to Mike Galvin representing Duagh/Lyre and Kerry at the National Community Games finals in Dublin last weekend. Mike made it to the final of the U12 100m and finished 6th overall.
