FLEADH NA MUMHAN PUBLIC MEETING ON MONDAY 22ND FEBRUARY

Listowel Comhaltas Craobh and the town of Listowel are honoured to be hosting Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2016. The town has hosted many memorable All Ireland Fleadhanna, the last one being in 2002. The 56th Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan will take place from Tuesday 12th July to Sunday 17th July 2016 and there will be an extensive programme of events including a 1916 Commemoration Night with lecture and songs, Traditional Singing Club on several nighst, Sean Nos Dancing Workshop, Archive Film Night (from All Ireland Fleadhanna in Listowel), Family Performance Concert, Trad Sessions go leor, Scoil Fonn agus Amhran workshops, Polka and Slide workshops, Ceilithe indoor and outdoor, Street Entertainment and History Tours of Listowel and Listowel Castle. The usual Fleadh competitions in Music, Singing, Dancing, Comhra and Storytelling will be held over the weekend and 23 venues have been secured to accommodate these.

This year the Listowel Craobh of Comhaltas has the onerous task of hosting Fleadh na Mumhan on behalf of all the branches in the Province. The support of all the locals Businesses and people from all over Kerry as well as Kerry branches and Co. Boards is essential so that we can successfully host this great event. We are putting in a big effort into fundraising locally but we really need the backing of all the local people in the Listowel Area to ensure that Fleadh na Mumhan 2016 is an enjoyable event for all who visit Listowel on that week.

It is great to have many events taking place over the week with some of the highlights been on Thursday Sean-Nos dancer Emma O’Sullivan hails from Connemara, Co. Galway in the West of Ireland will conduct a Sean Nos Dancing workshop. On Saturday night Donie Nolan Ceili Band will take to the stage and on Sunday the One and Only Johnny Reidy Ceili band will play in the Square Listowel. This will be a brilliant open air venue and no doubt the Square will be packed with Set Dancers.

On Monday night next we are having a public meeting in Christys The Square Listowel at 8pm and we are asking the people of Listowel, North Kerry and beyond to come and support our call for help. The hosting of Fleadh na Mumhan is a great honour but it alot of organising and help form the people of Listowel. We invite people to turn up at next Mondays nights meeting to support us and the Fleadh in Listowel once again a success.

BRU COLUMBANUS RAISE OVER €5,000 IN LISTOWEL

“Thank everyone who volunteered for the Bru Columbanus street collection in Listowel last Saturday. Thanks to all who donated to this worthy cause. A total of €4,532.20 was collected on the day.

Donations included brought it to €5,044.20. A cheque presentation to Anne-Maria of Bru Columbanus will take place in the square in Listowel on Tuesday 1st March at 7pm.

EXTENSION OF MORTGAGE INTEREST RELIEF TO 2020 WILL HELP HARD PRESSED FAMILIES – BRASSIL

310,000 families face losing an average €750 from next year.

Kerry General Election candidate John Brassil has described the party’s proposal to extend mortgage interest relief for owner occupiers to 2020 as a major boost for hard pressed families.

Mortgage interest for home loans is currently available to persons who purchased their home between 2004 and 2012. 310,400 mortgage holders are in receipt of mortgage interest relief on their home. The vast bulk of these bought between 2004 and 2008. These families are set to lose tax relief on their monthly repayment when mortgage interest relief is phased out by the end of 2017. The average benefit of mortgage interest relief to families in 2015 was €747.

Councillor Brassil said, “This payment is a very important financial support for families particularly those struggling with sky high variable mortgage rates. The process of withdrawing it from existing homeowners will be a severe blow to families who bought their home when prices were at their highest. Many of these families are now juggling huge outgoings including their monthly mortgage, childcare costs and medical bills.

“We are committed to helping families in Kerry struggling to meet the cost of their mortgage. In this context Fianna Fáil believes now is not the right time to remove this very important financial support. “That is why Fianna Fail will retain the Mortgage Interest Relief scheme for existing mortgage holders to 2020. This will cost €166 million and this is provided for in our fully costed manifesto.

Combined with our First Time Buyers Savings Scheme this will secure home ownership for an entire generation of young families in Kerry and across the country.”

LISSELTON NATIONAL SCHOOL NIGHT AT THE DOGS 2016

Lisselton National School are hosting their inaugural ‘Night at the Dogs’ at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee on Saturday 19th March 2016.

This event is a fundraiser to raise much needed funds for the proposed additional building works to the school. This building work will serve to make the school accessible for wheelchair users along with catering for the additional increase of special educational needs requirements in the school. The school extension will consist of an additional classroom, accessible resource teaching rooms, wheelchair accessible toilet, school entrance ramps and automatic doors for independent entry and exit.

Tickets are €10 for adults and kids go free. There will be face painting, bouncy castle and live entertainment on the night after racing. There will also be wonderful prizes for Best Dressed Lady/Gent/Little Miss and Master and a huge raffle on the night with fantastic prizes. Sponsorship slots for our program are still available.

Junior Entrepreneur Programme. The 5th/6th Class pupils of the Athea National School are taking part in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. The project involves the production of greeting cards. Each greeting card has various pictures of Athea on them. The cards are selling at €1 each or €4 for a pack of 5.

The pupils will showcase their work on February 22nd in Athea National School to the local community. The cards will also be on sale in the local shops. The pupils would like to thank everyone for your support so far.

Students from St Joseph’s Secondary School, Ballybunion, with their teachers, Ms Fiona Healy and Ms Anne Cummins, joined by students from St Michael’s College, Listowel with their teacher, Mr Conleth Dillon, at Kerry Airport, setting off for the annual St Joseph’s Secondary School German Exchange with Gymnasium Maria-Koenigin, Lennestadt.

The students will live with a German counterpart for the week. They will go to school and have activities laid on by the school in Germany during the week. The German students in turn will pay a return visit to the Irish schools at the beginning of September when activities will be provided for the group again.

The Exchange, now in its ninth year, is going from strength to strength.

Over the years of the Exchange, many links have been made, with some students maintaining contact and visiting one another while former participants from Maria-Koenigin have come to work as German language assistants in St Joseph’s. We wish everyone a safe journey!

KERRY HURLING MINOR The Kerry minor hurlers will contest 3 competitions this year, namely the Todd Nolan Tournament, Leinster League and the All Ireland Minor B championship. Having won the county minor hurling championship in 2015 Lixnaw will supply the captain and the club have decided that Shane Conway will be the captain for the All Ireland Minor B championship. Colin Sheehy will be captain for the Leinster League and Liam Mullins will be captain for the Todd Nolan Tournament. We wish them all well in their new leading roles.

KILFLYNN KILFLYNN ST. PATRICKS DAY MEETING The Kilflynn St. Patrick's Day Parade Meeting takes place on Thursday 18th February at 9.00 p.m in St. Treasa's National School, Kilflynn. Everyone welcome.

GRANDPARENTS DAY On February 3rd last, the grandparents of the pupils attending Scoil Treasa Naofa, Kilflynn were invited to the church to mark Grandparents' Day. Fr. Denis O'Mahony celebrated mass which was then followed by the blessing the throats, distribution of St. Brigid's Crosses "agus cupán tae nó caife."

Míle buíochas to Fr. Denis for providing an alternative site for this important gathering as the school hall was too small this year - half of it is currently partitioned off to create a temporary additional classroom.

An-bhuíochas freisin to Tina O'Connell for preparing the choir and readers, Laura Horgan for organising the making of some 200 St. Brigid's Crosses by the pupils, the parents and grandparents who collected rushes and the ladies who prepared and served the refreshments and food.

We wish all our grandparents the best of health and happiness in 2016 and assure them that we highly value the irreplaceable positive influence they can have in the lives of their grandchildren.

Curtayne’s ministry, has been found and returned to the church.

It had been removed during the renovation in 1977. The Finance Committee has arranged for its repair and restoration, and it has set up the Sanctuary Lamp Fund that will remain open during Lent, for donations towards covering the costs. The lamp will be re-dedicated and suspended in the church at Easter. Please put contributions in an envelope and write ‘Sanctuary Lamp’ on it. These can be put into the collection basket at masses, or handed into the parish office.

ATHEA DRAMA GROUP Rehearsals are progressing very well for Athea Drama Group's upcoming production of 'The Hen Night Epiphany' which will be staged at Con Colbert Hall Athea on February 25/ 27/28 & March 3/5/ 6. Directed by Oliver McGrath, this is a heart lifting tale that tells the story of five women who meet up for a night of fun and laughter that ultimately leaves their lives turned upside down. The cast features Annette O'Donell, Angeline O'Donnell, Nora Hunt, Louise Ahern & Ria Browne.

SIVE It’s 57 years since its first outing in Listowel and now, all those years later the play, which still resonates with audiences both rural and urban will be staged by the Abbeyfeale Drama Group in Fr. U12B's: Our U12B team lost at home today to Killarney Celtic B 3-1 in the cup. We were the better team but it was one of those days where nothing went right for the home side. Killarney Celtic went 1 up in the first half through an own goal and led at half time totally against the run of play. The home team equalized through a Jack Carty goal and one would have expected them to push on and win but Killarney scored again when a corner kick was allowed to bounce in the six yard box and was headed in unchallenged to the net. Listowel Celtic pushed hard for the equalizer and a wonderful save from the visiting team goalie denied them the goal they deserved. As Listowel Celtic pushed on Killarney caught them on the counter late in the game to deal victory. It is our teams first defeat of the season so they can't be too unhappy. Man of the match was Cathal McElligott. Team was: Kieran Mackessy., Tiernan Pierce, Cathal McElligott, Jayden McElligott, Jack Carty, Rory Mahony, Christopher McQuaid, Tony Boland, Liam Connelly and Darragh Hudson U12D's: Well done to our U12D team as they done their best but unfortunately lost out away to Killorglin U12B's 2-4 in the Kerry Cup. They were 3 nil down and fought back with great spirit within the team. The Killorglin U12B team will take a lot to beat on their day with some exceptional players. U12 girls: Our U12 girls made the long journey to a cold and wet Kenmare on Saturday last and were defeated 7.1 by a strong physical Kenmare team. Full credit to the girls who traveled and showed great team spirit throughout the entire game and never gave up. A huge thanks to the parents that traveled

and supported the team. These young players can be extremely proud of their performance on the day. Well done to Ava Fitzgerald who scored our only goal on the day. LISTOWEL ATHLETIC CLUB

Munster Schools Cross Country: Munster Schools were held last Thursday in Tramore Valley Park in Cork City on what was a dry crisp day on a relative flat rolling course with good underfoot conditions. Listowel AC athletes taking part were Nathan Wright (Desmond College), Sasha Brent and Seamus Leahy (both Tarbert Comprehensive). In the Minor Boys, Nathan put in a storming finish to gain 6 places in the last 500m to finish 7th just one place outside the medal positions. In the Intermediate Girls, Sasha ran a perfect race to take Bronze running strong from the start of the race to put herself in the front group for the first lap. Sasha made a break in the second lap to secure the third position, in what was her best race to date. In a strong intermediate boys race, Seamus finished in the Top 30. This was consistent running from Seamus as he was the 7th North Munster athlete finished. Seamus will take alot from this race and will build on this experience. Both Nathan and Sasha have qualified for the National Schools finals in Sligo on Mar 5th.

Munster Indoors U9-U12: Our younger age group were at the Munster U9 U12 Indoors in Nenagh at the weekend. Listowel AC were strongly represented at all ages. Medal winners included Saorise Dillion, who had a very impressive race in the U10 60m taking Gold. Amy O'Connor took Silver in the U9 60m in her first major indoor competition and Mike Galvin won Bronze in the U11 60m. All athletes can be very proud of how they performed as Munster level is a very good standard. We have some excellent talent coming through at this young age. Well done to the following athletes who participated, put in good competitive racing and have set good times: John Carmody, Ben Corridan, Gavin Dillon, Oran Doorley, Adam Lynch, Joseph Maher, Aoibheann McElligott, Emma Neylon, Eabha O Connor, Tadgh O Connor, Bobby O Riordan, Molly O Riordan, Luke Sheridan, Ethan and Maria Trischler.

A big thank you to all the parents and coaches who travelled and supported the atletes over the weekend.

LISTOWEL RUGBY

U18 Girls Munster Final - Listowel/Tralee vs. Shannon History was made on Saturday when the 2 Kerry clubs combined to contest their first final at this level against an established Shannon side at Garryowen RFC. Kick off was at 2.15pm and the Kerry girls made sure that Shannon knew they were in a game from the off. The game plan was simple, hold on to the ball for as long as possible with the forwards making the hard yards up front. It was not a day for heroics as the rain was torrential and the pitch became heavier by the minute.

The girls played the conditions well with the forwards lead by Ciara Shine making good ground with ball in hand. The tone was set with 2 early lineout steals by Aoife Corcoran assisted by Dearbhla Canty and Hayley Betts. All of a sudden the Kerry girls had the momentum and go forward ball. They did not let up with mauls and drives and credit must go to Shannon for never letting up on the defence.

It took until the 20th minute after sustained pressure from the forwards for the first score. The Kerry girls were now going through the phases in a ruthless manner of driving and quick recycling by the ever impressing Caoliann Healy, Kayla Donnelly and the rest of the pack. It was after 7 phases of excellent rucking and drives that Hayley Betts crossed the line in the corner. Listowel/Tralee were 5 points up and very unlucky not to get any more scores in a first half that they completely dominated.

The second half started with the Kerry girls continuing to put pressure on Shannon`s defence, and it did not take long before the girls were awarded a penalty which Muirna Wall slotted over to give them an 8 point lead with 30 minutes to go. The next 15 minutes was an intense slog up front by the 2 forward packs with Shannon trying to get the ball out wide when possible to their speed merchants , but the Kerry backs were up for the task as their

defence held out with the midfield combination of Aisling Brosnan and Ella Kelleher quite superb in their defensive roles.

Shannon were now bringing on fresh legs, and the substitutes seemed to make an instant impact when Shannon managed to cross the line with 10 minutes remaining on the clock.

It was 8-5 to Listowel/Tralee and we were now defending nonstop. The girls had left everything out on the pitch and it was a cruel twist when Shannon managed to score the winning try with 30 seconds left on the clock.

It was all over , and we had just lost an epic battle with seconds to spare, but these girls are all winners. There were only 15 of them, no substitutes, no excuses, and playing in some of the worst conditions imaginable they stood proud and did not succumb until the 70th minute of what can only be described as a titanic battle. The Kerry girls will be back!

Our U18's boys were away to Corca Dhuibhne on Sunday where they proved to be the stronger team on the day with a victory over the Corca Dhuibhne boys.

This win secures a home Munster quarter final to be held on the weekend of Feb 27th. A win that weekend will see the boys a step closer to the final.

Beale Minors were defeated by Ballylongford/Asdee in the final of the 2015 Jotty Holly Minor Championship on Saturday in Ballylongford. It was tit for tat in the opening half, with little separating the sides and we went into the interval trailing by just two points, 1-5 to 1-7. Our opponents stretched the lead to nine points on the changeover but a goal in the fifteenth minute gave us some hope. However, another goal by Bally/Asdee closed out the game and the final score read: Beale 2-7, Ballylongford/Asdee 2-20. Beale team: Michael Eoin O’Sullivan, Tommy O’Neill, Fionnán Toomey, Seamie O’Sullivan, Johnny O’Sullivan, Callum McSweeney, Killian Walsh-O’Boyle, Jonathan Carr, Darragh Buckley, Aaronn Kelly, Cillian Courtney and Mikey Hannan.

Sunday at 2 o’clock. The following weekend we travel to Tarbert and our last game will be on Sunday, March 13th, when we host Brosna in Ballybunion.

The County Minor Football League, Division 5 (13-a-side), kicks off on Saturday, March 5th, against Keel/Listry, and then Asdee/Ballylongford on March 12th. Other teams in this division include, Knocknagoshel/Brosna and Ballyduff/Duagh.

Beale Seniors kick off Division 3 of the County League, when we travel to Blennerville on the weekend of March 20th to play St Patrick’s in a repeat of our last game of 2015. In round 2, we host Keel on the Easter weekend, and then we travel to Ardfert on the weekend of April 10th.

Beale Seniors contest the County Junior Club Championship against Churchill.

The Junior Championship replaces what was the Novice Championship.

Beale GAA extend sympathies to the families of John Foley, Michael Hanrahan and Tim Hannan who recently passed to their eternal reward.

When the Ballyconry club disbanded in the early 1950s, many of the players joined Ballybunion and in 1958, John Foley was goalkeeper on the Ballybunion team that captured the North Kerry Intermediate title. John was vice-chairman of the club in the mid-fifties and later a member of the executive. John’s grandchildren, Cora, Diarmuid and Orla O’Mahony, currently play football with Beale. Orla and Diarmuid play with Beale Coiste na nÓg, while Cora plays with Beale Ladies.

A keen footballer, Michael Hanrahan’s career was cut short due to injury.

Michael was member of the executive of Ballybunion GAA club in the midfifties and also delegate to the County Board. His son, Aidan donned the Beale colours at minor, senior and junior levels, while Pádraig helped Beale under14s to North Kerry Championship glory in the early eighties. The Hanrahan family football tradition continues today, with Michael’s grandson, Shane, one of Beale’s most promising young footballers and a proud holder of a North Kerry Championship medal, won in 2014.

News then broke early last week of the passing of Tim Hannan. Tim’s daughters, Norma and Anne formed the backbone of the Beale Ladies defence in the early eighties, bringing the County Intermediate Championship to the club, and their brother, John, was the treasurer of Beale GAA in the past decade. Tim’s grandchildren, Shane and Nicola and Darragh Kissane, together Jamie and Katie Hannan carry on the family football tradition. May the souls of John Foely, Michael Hanrahan and Tim Hannan rest in peace.

Ashbourne Cup Final: Last Sunday was not only a great day for the Kerry Hurlers,but for our County Camogie Star Patrice Diggin who was part of the UL College Camogie Team who were crowned Ashbourne Cup Champions after a last minute goal to seal victory over UCC of Cork after beating Waterford Institute of Technology in a Semi Final on Saturday. Full time score UL 4.7 UCC 3.12 Patrice who needs no introduction in Kerry is a bright and talented dual star who also plays Football with her local team Causeway. Patrice played a huge part all weekend for the College team she was superb and was their main free taker and was accurate in her free taking, while keeping the college side in the game for long periods of time while the game looked like it may have been going in favour of the UCC side.

Patrice stood out and was awarded Player of the Tournament, this is a great acheivement for Patrice and her family. She is the First player from Kerry to win the prestigious player of the tournament she is going to down a history maker. Sara Murphy also was on the panel for UL. Patrice has made history in being awarded this award. Congrats to the girls and all involved with this team. Everyone involved with Kerry Camogie in this county is extremely proud of Patrice on her latest achievement.

In fairness to Beale who had to line out without their Kerry Minor Cormac Linnane out through injury had their fair share of possession and went toe to toe with Asdee/Bally in the early stages and led after 17mts when Jonathan Carr snatched a goal and this was due to some tremendous work by Johnny O Sullivan at midfield, Calium McSweeney at number 6, Fionan Twoomey at 5, along with Darragh Buckley and Cillian Courtney in attack they contested each ball well but the overall strength and determination of their opponents seemed too much for a game Seasiders. Still on saying that the combination side seemed always in control and with both Jack Keane and Darren Murphy excelling in defence; Jack Mulvihill in flying form at midfield, substitute Ciaran Dowd excelling when introduced Eoin O Connor wing forward along with captain Ciaran O Connor giving a man of the match performance and chief tormenter to the visitors rearguard and after a close opening half Asdee/Bally just strolled to a convincing 13pt victory in a one sided remaining 30mts.

The game got underway with the home side favourites to lift the title and within 2mts Beales Darragh Buckley opened the scoring from a close in free and less than a minute later Ciarain O Connor who was to regester a staggering tally of 1-8, (5f) leveled maters from a free. For the next 6mts or so it was tit for tat with points coming from Ciarain O Connor and Jack Mulvihill for the home side and Darragh Buckley for Beale and which saw Bally/Asdee lead 0-4 to 0-2. However the Seasiders struck a hammer blow to their opponents when Johnny O Sullivans long delivery say Jonathan get on the end to crash to the net with 13mts left in the half as Beale led 12 to 0-4. Johnny O Sullivan extended their lead with a superb point followed by further points by Darragh Buckley.

However Asdee/Bally held firm and it was the games top man Ciaran O Connor who levelled up matters again with a well taken goal. The combination side finished the half in style with substitute Ciaran Dowd stamping his mark in the game with 2 excellent points to leave the half time score; Asdee/Bally 1-7 Beale 1-5.
