MANCHESTER UNITED MEETS LB ROVERS SOCCER ACADEMY

Manchester United legends Lee Sharpe, David May, Andy Ritchie and Lee Martin met with the young players of LB Rovers FC Soccer Academy on Sunday July 31st.

This Special visit wouldn't have been possible without the help of John Mchale of The Stretford End Bar Causeway & LB Rovers would like to extend a huge thank you to John & all associated with the Stretford End Bar for giving a small group of kids such a fantastic opportunity.

With only days remaining to vote for the Best Shops 2016 award in Ireland jointly run by the Irish Times in association with AIB Bank, local AIB Bank Manager Stephen Stack is asking for nominations for shops in the north Kerry Area.

"Its a simple process, just log on to the Irish Times website - Best shops 2016 - and nominate under the various categories such as Best Book store, best family run business, best cafe, etc. Listowel & north Kerry are full of worthy nominees" said Stephen…"and it would be great if one of our own could be in the running for a prize and exposure in the national media".

The awards are running 5 years and going from strength to strength.

Pictured with Stephen are local AIB Bank staff members Bernadette Daughton and Aileen McCarthy. Closing date is this week so all nominations would be greatly appreciated by the shops in Listowel.

LB Rovers is a grassroots Soccer Club in the Lisselton/Ballybunion area of North Kerry, which was formed in 2012. The Club’s aim is to grow a Club from underage level right through to senior level. Such is the interest with the game of soccer in the area that Children from the surrounding areas of Ballyduff & Causeway are also involved with LB Rovers Underage teams. Currently LB Rovers facilitate boys and girls at under 7, 8, 9, 10 in their Academy, along with having U11 & U13 teams playing in the Kerry Schoolboys/girls league for the coming 2016/2017 Season.

The ex-Manchester United starlets gave the young players a few tips on how to become good players and how to prepare for games. They also talked to the players about past great teams they played. Lee Sharpe mentioned about Barcelona and Galatsaray as being very tough opponents. The young players also posed them with some questions and were given a great insight into what level of training & preparation is required at the top level of Soccer.

David May then put the players through their paces by doing a few drills. He got them to practice their shooting skills on their left and right. He also got them to practice their heading skills. He gave some guidance to each player on how they can improve their football skills. This visit was a great boost for the Academy. The Academy greatly appreciates the effort made by the visitors to meet the young players. They wished the players well for the next season and promised that they will come back and do another session with more of our academy players in the near future.

The session took place at the AstroTurf pitch at St Joseph's Secondary School in Ballybunion. LB Rovers FC Soccer Academy will be using this facility for training next season along with Scoil Iosagain National School Pitch for training & matches. The Academy wish to thank Principal John O'Donovan of St. Josephs Secondary school & principal Ita Walsh of Scoil Iosagain, along with their respective Boards of Management for allowing the Academy to use their wonderful facilities.

LB Rovers Soccer Academy resumes this coming September for age groups U7 up to U13 & all new players are most welcome. For further information call Eoin O' Mahony on 087 2254837.

FACING FEAR AND ANXIETY WORKSHOP IN BALLYBUNION

‘Facing Fear and Anxiety’ Workshop: will be given over two Saturdays, 6th & 13th August, 10am-2pm by Tom Griffin.

This workshop uses an acceptance-based, process-oriented approach and draws from the principles of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. It is full of insight for the general public as well as being very practical for anyone who wishes to overcome anxiety. Previous workshops in the UK and Ireland have received very positive feedback; "Great content and excellent from start to finish".

Tom is a committed Christian, has worked as a psychologist, has studied Psychodrama and is currently studying Psychotherapy. The workshop is limited to 20 places only and will be held in Faha, Ballybunion. Total cost: €25 per person, payable in advance.

KILLARNEY LIBRARY TO HOST PRESTIGIOUS ‘PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR’ EXHIBITION

The ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2016’ Exhibition, a collection of winning and shortlisted images from the annual awards of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, will be on display in Killarney Library, Rock Road, Killarney, from August 8th - August 25th. To celebrate the visit, the Mayor of Killarney District Cllr.

Brendan Cronin will officially open the exhibition on Monday, 8th August at 3p.m.

Over 2,000 images were entered into the annual awards this year, by 103 photographers from around the country. Awards were presented across nine categories; news, daily life & people, nature & the environment, politics, sports action, sports feature, portrait, art & entertainment and reportage.

Mark Condren, Irish Independent, was named ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2016’, his fourth time to receive the accolade. The awards judging panel included Dermot O’Shea, former picture editor of The Irish Times, who chaired the panel; John Giles, photographic editor of Press Association and Sophie Batterbury, head of pictures, The Independent/The Independent on Sunday.

Speaking about the exhibition visit to Killarney Library, Michael Chester, President, Press Photographers Association of Ireland, said; “I am delighted the PPAI exhibition is visiting Killarney, the exhibition’s first visit to the South West this year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Librarian Eamonn Browne and Killarney Library for its support and we hope visitors will enjoy viewing the work of our members.”

TOUR DE MUNSTER THURS 4TH AUG – SUN 7TH AUG

This is a 4 day event where120 amateur cyclists cover 600km around Munster in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. All cyclists pay their own way so all sponsorship money raised by the cyclists goes directly to the 6 Munster DSI Branches. Without the cyclists this event would not exist.

Money is also raised by getting sponsorship from businesses and in return they get their business advertised on the TDM cycling jersey which is worn throughout the 4 day event and training cycles coming up to the event.

Bucket shaking will be taking place as the cyclists pass through each county.

Money raised from in each County stays in that County.

Sean Kelly has cycled the 4 days for the last number of years and will be doing so again this year. He will be arriving at Tralee, Killarney & Kenmare along with the other cyclists so this will be an ideal opportunity for fans to meet him Day 1: Waterford to Killaloe 160km Day 2: Killaloe to Tralee 150km Day 3: Tralee to Kenmare 147km Day 4: Kenmare to Cork 133km

The cyclists will arrive in Tarbert on Day 2 at 3.20pm and will then proceed to Listowel where they will stop at Christy’s for tea & coffee from 4.10pm to 4.40pm

KERRY MINORS The Kerry minor hurlers began the defence of their All Ireland minor B title with a comfortable ten point victory over Kildare at Austin Stack Park. It didn’t look very rosy at half time though for Kerry who found themselves two points adrift, 2-6 to 1-7 having played with the advantage of the breeze. A tremendous second half performance, inspired by captain Shane Conway saw Kerry outscore Kildare 1-13 to 4 points to finish 220 to 2-10 winners and a place in the semi final where they will play Down away on Saturday August 13th. The team was captained by Shane Conway and he was joined on the team by Liam Mullins, Conor O’Keeffe, Colin Sheehy and on the panel by Robert Silles and Brian McAuliffe.

KERRY U21s Travel to Semple Stadium Thurles this Saturday to take on Donegal in the quarter final of the All Ireland U 21 B Championship where the Richie McElligott cup will be the prize on offer. JERRY MOLYNEAUX It was with great regret that we learned during the week of the passing of Jerry Molyneaux, Rathkeale. Jerry of course was Manager/Trainer of the hugely successful Lixnaw senior team in 1999 achieving success in the County Senior Hurling Championship following a lapse of fourteen years, first County U21 Hurling Championship club success and North Kerry Senior Hurling Championship. His selection committee were Willie Dowling, Mike McKenna and Denis Fealy. He also gave great service to Kerry having managed Kerry Senior and U21 teams in the past. 1999 was not his first visit to Lixnaw though because in 1982 when Lixnaw had their Official field opening Jerry refereed the Limerick v Kerry senior hurling match which was part of the days programme. He gave outstanding service to his own club Knockaderry and in more recent years Rathkeale and to his county Limerick. Before his untimely death he was Chairman of the West Limerick G.A.A. Board. Jerry was manager of the

Limerick Intermediate hurling team that won Munster intermediate hurling championships in 2008 and 2009. He was a selector with the Limerick minor hurling team that won the 1987 All Ireland minor hurling championship final and a selector for the successful Limerick U21 hurling team in 1987. But of course it was because of his exploits with Lixnaw that we will remember him most. Following Lixnaws success in 1999, Jerry paid tribute to Lixnaw when he said in a Kerryman newspaper interview and I quote; ‘’There is massive team spirit and camaraderie in this Lixnaw team and they never die. They would go through a stone wall for you. It’s nice to come from an outside county and come back to train a team to win a county championship. When I came back here in February we laid down the lines for the players what we wanted from the year. We told the players there would have to be a huge commitment. They made those sacrifices and I’m delighted for every one of the twenty five on the panel today who now have a county championship medal to show for it’’.

On behalf of Lixnaw G.A.A. deepest Sympathy goes out to his wife Berine, daughters Louise, Caoimhe and Cora, mother Nellie, sister Joan, brother Willie, many other relatives and large circle of friends and neighbours. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.

ROISIN FITZMAURICE FUND RAISING QUIZ A sincere thank you to everyone who supported the Fundraiser Quiz for children in iKhethelo, South Africa organised by Róisín Fitzmaurice recently. The night was a great success thanks to all who attended the quiz, who supported the raffle and who made private contributions. Thanks to the prize winners for their generosity in donating their winnings, to all who donated spot prizes, to John McAuliffe, the quizmaster for making sure everyone enjoyed the quiz and to the Dew Drop Inn for hosting the fundraiser .The funds raised will make a significant difference to the lives of the children in iKhethelo Children's Village which is near Durban.

ABBEYDORNEY VINTAGE (6TH/7TH AUGUST) Final preparations are being put in place over the coming days for the onset of our Big Event this weekend. The weekend kicks off on Saturday afternoon with the Vintage/Classic Car and Tractor Run. Registration takes place in the Vintage field @ 5pm.

The Cars and Tractors will set off @ 5.30pm, travelling along the coastal routes of North Kerry, returning to the village at approx.

8pm, where a BBQ and Music will follow. Prizes will be presented for the Best Vintage/Classic Car and Best Vintage Tractor. On Sunday morning, at 12 noon, the Vintage Rally will commence in the Vintage Field in the village. It will be an action-packed, fun-filled day for all the family with activities including Macks Fun Fair, Dog Show, Fire Engine Rides, Ladies Bale Push, Tractor Pull and much more. There is will a wide range of Vintage Vehicles and Machinery on display along with various trade stands. A special word of that's to all those who supported, amount collect was €1,400 KERRY LIBRARY LAUNCHES SUMMER STARS READING CHALLENGE Libraries across Kerry are welcoming children to participate in a fantastic challenge that will keep them reading throughout the school summer holidays - the Summer Stars Reading Challenge. Each year Kerry Library runs summer reading programmes for primary school children to promote literacy development during the holidays and to encourage non readers to engage with books. The Reading Challenge will run during the summer from 27 June – 22 August. Taking part is easy, just call into to Listowel library and register. Each child who registers for the free programme joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during the summer. Children will receive their own Summer Stars reading Card to record their progress and the Summer Stars Reward Stamp will be added to their card at the library for each book read. At the end of the programme, all children who have participated will be invited to attend an awards event. KILFLYNN CROTTA COISTE NA NOG Crotta U15’s were well defeated by Ballyheigue in the 2nd round of the NK Championship on Tuesday 26 July in Ballyheighue.

In the County U-12 League div1 Crotta were defeated by Lixnaw By 5-10 to 207 in the sportsfield Dromakee on Friday 29th July. Crotta are away to Ballyduff on Friday evening 5th July in round 2.

RYAN SHERIDAN TO PLAY IN KILFLYNN Platinum selling Irish artist, songwriter and guitarist from County Monaghan, Ryan Sheridan will headline the first ever live concert event in Kilflynn village on Saturday 6th August. CROTTA INTERMEDIATE HURLERS The Crotta Hurlers recorded a 3-06 to 0-13 victory over Kilmoyley, on Tuesday evening 26th July in Lerrig and advanced to the North Kerry Hurling Board Intermediate Semi final. Crotta goalscorers were Jonathan Caffrey 2 and Stephen Moroney 1. Well done to Crotta Hurlers and their mentors of Sean Weir and Richard Nolan. Crotta will play Causeway in the semi final.

Junior League Final : Tarbert 1-6 Moyvane 1-8. Played in Ballylongford last Tuesday with conditions poor Tarbert and Moyvane junior teams played out a very entertaining game of football. Tarbert started brightly and were up 1-1 to 0-1 after ten minutes thanks to a goal by Shane Heffernan. Scores were at a premium with both teams missing chances but Tarbert still held the lead at half time by 1-2 to 0-4. Moyvane the crucial score of the game at the start of the second half with a goal to put them two up and a lead they never lost. This young Tarbert team battled well but Moyvane’s experience under the heavy underfoot conditions proof decisive.

AWARE OPEN EVENING Abbeyfeale Family Support Programme and Aware will host an open night on Tuesday August 16 in the Further Education and Training Centre, Abbeyfeale at 7.30pm to highlight the services Aware offers in Limerick and to introduce Aware’s Life Skills programme which will run in the town each Monday from September 19 to October 24. Aware’s Life Skills programme is based on the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which has been shown to be an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression, stress and/or anxiety.

COISTE NA NOG The main action this week was with the Under-12s who started by taking on a strong Knock/Brosna football side in Brosna on Monday evening. A win for the hosts would have guaranteed them a top of the table finish, but a strong goalkeeping performance from Ruairí Whelan coupled with battling wing play from Kieran O’Carroll and Stefan Carrig helped Ballyduff take the spoils by a single point in this tense clash. As if that weren’t enough, the same players were out for a hurling match away to Ballyheigue on Thursday. Again, the players showed their spirit and skill in taking the win, this time by a more comfortable margin, 59 to 2-8. The boys will be out next in their final football league match against Finuge on Monday at home.

The coming week will see the Under-10’s back in action with challenge matches in football on Tuesday evening and hurling on Thursday, both at home. Keep an eye on Facebook for exact times. Under-16 hurlers are also scheduled to play against Ballyheigue on Thursday.

Finally, please note that tickets for the Lip Sync Battle event, scheduled for October 15th in the Brandon Hotel, Tralee, will go on sale in the next week or so. There will be between 16 and 18 groups, followed by a disco so a good night is in store.

We are hoping for this to be the biggest gathering of Ballyduff people both home and around the country. We will do our best to have an entertaining night while raising funds. So we are calling this the “Ballyduff Gathering”. Please support us as one big community on the night! Tickets are €20 each.

ASDEE GAA

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE For the third year in a row Asdee have qualified for the latter stages of the McCarthys Insurance Brokers Senior League Division 2. A recent victory against Knocknagoshel ensured that the Club would qualify for the semi final and a date with Ballyduff after picking further league points defeating Duagh and drawing with Ballyduff. Ballylongford having topped the league go straight through to the final so it will be all systems go to try and put one over on the “Duffers” which wont be an easy task and qualify for our third Division 2 final in a row. Of course with Bally already through to the final Asdee will be all out to go through to meet our fellow parishioners and put one over on them having suffered a heavy defeat in a recent County league outing. However first up will be Ballyduff who will be a tough obstacle to overcome. With the past two years Asdee have contested the Division 2 Final coming out at the wrong end of the scoreline on each occasion against Ballydonoghue and last year Moyvane. Hopefully the club will have some of their players that were not available up to now for various reasons may be available this time round as this may be the year to rectify this situation and

hope as the saying goes” third time lucky”.

PROVISIONAL FIXTURE At the minute with Ballyduffs involvement in the County Senior Hurling Championship; the Division 2 North Kerry Football Division 2 League Semi Final Asdeev Ballyduff has a provisional date of Wednesday August 17th or if Ballyduff advance to the Hurling final Wednesday September 14th has been pencilled in.

COUNTY LEAGUE: Our senior footballers have been blowing hot and cold in this years Credit Union County Football League, Division 5 and after the Round 8 games and only 3 to go it dosent look like we will be nearing promotion with just 6 league points on the board. However its been a difficult year so far but the team have been performing well enough with what we got, but unfortunately at no stage during the campaign had we got near enough a full team due to players making themselves unavailable through work, injuries and other comittments; in our previous two games against Ballylongford and Rathmore “B”there was just two substitute togged out. Its no fault of the players or management really as all you can play with what you have got. In fairness maybe it was close at times struggling to put a team together but the club have always made sure that a team was fielded. We had wins over Cromane, Ballyduff and Austin Stacks “B” while defeat was out lot against; Knocknagoshel, Duagh, Sneem/Derrynane and Rathmore.Certainly at the minute’ as already stated the club have been very fielding very much understrength sides but with the following players who are not available at the minute some out of the Country. Some with long term injuries and for different reasons they are not available; Con Carmody, Michael Tydings,, Padraig Ruddle, Patrick Horgan, Darren Russell, David O Connor, Charles Dalton, Sam Dowd and Michael Walsh which it makes it difficult with competing against the stronger teams. Then we have Conor Keane and Jack Keane waiting on the wings and who are not allowed to play due to the rule that under 17s cant play senior football. At least Noel Long, Conor Coughlan, Keith McNamara and Thomas Mulvihill are almost ready to play the full hour so hopefully things will pick up for the remainder of the season.

Not forgetting of course veterans Mick Fitzsimons and John Kennedy who had to line out on a few occasions to help the club out of tricky situations. . So it’s a sign of great spirit and camaraderie in the camp that a team can be fielded in what must be said; tricky situations.

COLLECTION. St Marys, Asdee held their Annual Church gate Collection on Sunday July 31st last. Once again on behalf of the club we would like to thank everybody who contributed on the day.

MINORS Asdee/Bally received a w/o from Knock/Brosna in Round 2 of the North Kerry Minor League Division 2 and collected their first North Kerry League points after going down with an understrength team to Tarbert/Moyvane in Round 1. Asdee/Bally were due to take on Duagh/Ballyduff on Thursday evening last but was postponed to a later date.

UNDER 16s After their loss to Ballyduff in Round 1; Asdee/Bally Under 16 had a big win over St Senans in Round 2 of the County League, Division 7 played in O Rahilly Park, Ballylongford on Wednesday evening last. Asdee/Bally 413 St. Senans 3-4. In Round 3 Asdee/Bally had a bye.

All Ireland U16C Championship The Kerry U16's finished their championship campaign with a hard fought victory against a dogged Roscommon team in Knockcroghery, Co Roscommon on Sunday. Roscommon got off to a good start and registered 3 points before Kerry's first score of the game, a shot from distance from Erin Stack was parried by the Roscommon keeper and Lisa Kearney's first time shot went straight to the net. The Kerry defence were working hard with some great clearances from Brid Horan, Kate Hickey and Mairead Brosnan but Roscommon responded with two frees from centre forward Kathy Jones.

Sarah O'Sullivan got on the end of a long ball into the Roscommon square for Kerry's second goal. The workrate of Katelyn O'Connor at midfield was key to Kerry not conceding more scores but Roscommon finished the half with a close range point from Mary Fallon. Half time score Roscommon 1-6 Kerry 2-0.

Kerry began the second half brightly with points from Caoimhe Shanahan and Erin Stack after some great solo runs down the wing by Kate Buckley.

Kerry were gaining a foothold into the game with Caoimhe Shanahan and Kate Lynch winning great ball in the half forward line which led to a free converted by Shanahan and a point from play. Roscommon continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with a number of long range points. Jessie O'Sullivan who had entered as a half time substitute was causing Roscommon all sorts of problems with her pace, and a hand pass to Shanahan who hit a shot to the top corner for a further Kerry goal. With ten minutes remaining Kerry were five points up but Roscommon replied with a goal from Aimee O'Connor.

Erin Stack hit a long range effort from the wing which soared into the back of the Roscommon net. Roscommon responded with 2 frees of their own and a point from play before Triona Curran playing full forward caught a high ball and hand passed to Kearney who extended Kerry's lead to 3 points with minutes left on the clock. The Kerry defence was resolute as Roscommon continued to attack with Brid Horan, Maggie Lynch and Rebecca Reilly clearing ball after ball and two great saves from Kerry keeper Clodagh Begley saw the Kingdom girls grind out the victory on a score line of 4-7 to 2-11. The girls have improved massively throughout the championship campaign with a number underage again next year so the future is bright for this panel of players. Next up they compete in a Munster blitz in Mallow on Saturday next commencing at 10am .

Kerry retained their All-Ireland U16 "A" football crown with a massive 20-point victory over Dublin as Kerry were outstanding from start to finish, with a clinical display of heart, teamwork, determination, and firepower. Kerry built the foundations for this victory with a superb first half performance as they went in leading by 14 points at the break 2-13 to 5 points and at the final whistle the margin had increased to a 20 point advantage. Player-of-the-match Fiadhna Tangney and Aoife O'Callaghan collected 1-11 between them.

Kerry opened proceedings with two points by Hannagh O'Donoghue from a free and Fiadhna Tagney from play, before Dublin's first score arrived in the fourth minute from Caoimhe O'Connor and Kerry replied and hit back to establish a five-point lead from the boots of Fiadhna Tagney with 2, and 1 apiece from Aoife O'Callaghan, Erica McGlynn and Hannah O'Donoghue.

The tight making by the Kerry backs made life hell for the Dublin forwards and Kerry looked capable of scoring a goal whenever they ran at the Dublin defense. Hannah O'Donoghue showed her striking prowess by roaring through for a 17th-minute goal. Kerry dominated this game in each of their positions and a further goal from Brid Ryan gave Kerry a 2-13 to 0-05 lead at the break.

At the restart, Kerry picked up where they left off as O'Callaghan converted a free before burying a 34th-minute penalty for Kerry's third goal, after Fiadhna Tangney was fouled and this contest was well and truly over. Kerry then added further points from Fiadhna Tagney, Niamh Ni Chonchuir and Aofe O'Callaghan and Dublin couldn't reply as they just didn't have the speed, agility or ability to keep pace with this outstanding team and Kerry kept defending hard and fast against Dublin, and limited them to just another 5 points in the second half.

It was Clounmacon who started the brighter with Chris Lyons converting two awarded free's in the 2nd and 4th minutes, and I am afraid that was to be Clounmacon lot for the first half with the Emmets team buzzing around the pitch with pace and intensity. Emmets star forward David Keane opened their scoring with a free awarded in the 5th minute and from here on in it was point after point notching up 9 more points in the half coming from Darren Halpin 2pts, David Keane adding a further 2 pts to his tally, John James Buckley 2pts, Sean Gilbert, Rici Hanley and Darraghy Leahy a point a piece to finish the half Emmets 0.10 v Clounamcon 0.02 The neutral in the stand and no doubt the Clounmacon supporter were crying out for a bright start for their team, but it was not to be the Emmets boys were not taking their foot of the pedal, the second half was the Darragh Leahy and David Keane show. Darragh Leahy opened the scoring in the first minute followed quickly by a goal from team mate Sean Gilbert to end the game as a contest. Clounmacons Robbie Hanlon who was Clounmacon man of the match converted a 45 to open their half but with no score from play it was to little to late. Again Emmets Darragh Leahy added a further two points, Clounmacon Chris Lyons converted another awarded free in the 8th minute, the game lulled for about 5 minutes as Clounmacon fought hard to give some respectability to the scoreboard but just couldn't make the scores stick, It was now time for Emmets David Keane to show off and scored 1.03 before the final whistle, Clounmacon did add a point from Chris Lyons and a late goal from Robbie Hanlon was a small consolation for a proud Clounmacon side, Clounamacon are not this bad and one can only wonder what went wrong on the night, but to give Emmets their dues they brought youth and pace and hunger to the table which proved a successful combination.
