The sun came up on Friday morning and revealed a land torn asunder. Helene had ripped across the region overnight, rocking homes, blowing off rooftops, smashing windows, toppling trees and destroying the power grid like a wrecking ball smashing through brick walls.
Help Is On The Way Rebuilding Together
By Makaylee
Staff Writer mrandolphadvance@gmail.com
Hurricane Helene left the area completely devastated after severe winds and tornadoes ravaged the area. Yet, in the midst of darkness, Altamaha EMC is helping to light the way to begin rebuilding the area, as they assure help is on the way.
“This is a disaster like this area has never seen before,” Altamaha EMC Manager of Marketing and Communications Tammye Vaughn emphasized. “Our system was totally destroyed. We did not have a single meter on our system that had electricity.”
She continued, “It’s not just us – Canoochee
Safe and sound in Northwest Georgia, I saw the devastation on the news. My calls weren’t connecting. I pulled up the outage map on Canoochee EMC’s website and gasped at the numbers and shaded regions on the graphic. I worried about my mother, my people, and my friends living in Toombs, Tattnall, Montgomery Counties and beyond. I finally reached my cousin, Renee Lively.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” Renee texted back. A few minutes later, she drove across the Ohoopee bridge to my mother’s home to make sure Mom was okay. She texted me, “Aunt Wanda is fine,” bringing my siblings and me a swell of relief and gratitude. Renee was not the only one who
EMC to the east of us; Excelsior EMC in the Metter and Statesboro area; Little Ocmulgee EMC in Wheeler – were destroyed.”
Realizing the incredible scope of destruction as a result of Helene’s wrath, the cooperative began quick work to bring as much manpower to the area as possible to begin rebuilding the damaged system and restore power. This influx of manpower requires an incredible amount of infrastructure to support the hundreds of workers.
“We all have more people than even the site can house right now. We are bringing in people continuously. Every hour it changes – so, housing
them is a problem; feeding them is a problem,” Vaughn continued. Altamaha EMC, Canoochee EMC, and Little Ocmulgee EMC came together and sought help for the daunting task. “We hired a company called Storm Services, and they specialize in natural disasters. Whether it’s hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, mudslides, whatever it is – they go to these areas
that are devastated. They have tents with cots that sleep people; they provide three meals a day; they have trailers with showers and shave stations. They do their laundry, too,” she explained.
According to Storm Services Site Manager Ben Hopkins, a team of 18 crew members work to help provide food service, fuel showers, sleeping arrangements, and restrooms to linemen
who have come into the area to help EMC. “It’s a mini city – a base camp,” he remarked. “We park you, feed you, provide a shower, do your laundry, and give you a place to sleep.” Hopkins noted that sleeping tents are air conditioned and have power, as the company uses generators to make the site as comfortable as possible.

He stressed the importance of these types of camps in the midst of disaster, as linemen and workers are away from their homes and families for a week or longer, making the comfort of a hot meal and somewhere to sleep very impactful.
“The linemen are the most important part of the rebuilding process, and it takes a lot of people to support these workers,” Hopkins shared.
He also stressed the rarity of finding communities with the ability to provide as large a space as the airport and fairgrounds for the site. “For the airport to have a place to put this many bucket trucks is very rare,” Hopkins emphasized.
“The city has been very gracious to let us use this
space. We are proud to be here to help, and we thank EMC for allowing us to come.”
According to Vaughn, the decision to place the site at the airport happened quickly on Friday morning, September 27. “The morning after the storm, [Altamaha EMC General Manager] George [McLendon] was trying to figure out where do we put these people and had an idea to put them at the closed runway at the airport. A few hours later, [Georgia Power Manager] Greg Hudgins chased [Vidalia Mayor] Doug Roper down – he actually by chance just pulled him over at our building and I saw them there talking. They came in, and that’s what Greg had wanted – we were all thinking the same thing,” she recalled.
Both companies made the decision to set up camp
at opposite ends of the location, as Georgia Power is housing around 750 linemen in their disaster relief camp and Altamaha EMC is housing crews from all over Georgia and other states at the Storm Services site.
One of the most popular aspects of the site is the meal service. Three chefs onsite cook for the linemen each day. “They receive a hot breakfast, a boxed lunch so that they can stay on the job sites, and a hot dinner,” Hopkins added.
“And it’s not hot dogs and hamburgers – we provide two proteins and vegetables.” One night, the workers were treated to steak and shrimp.
These accommodations have not only made linemen more comfortable in their time within

checked in on Mom that day. Daniel, a neighbor across the highway, had walked over in the first few minutes of daylight. Wayne Hall made his way over there, too, that morning. This checking in on one another is the way of my people — neighbors, friends, family members and loved ones rushing over to help because they care.
Again, here in the high country of the Peach State, the storm spared us, though flooding prevented me from leaving my home for a few hours on Friday.
On Saturday, as I drove southward to Atlanta, I saw a beautiful sight. Dozens, if not hundreds, of power utility trucks streamed down the interstate heading south in a convoy. The trucks from several different states brought tears to my eyes — that in this day and age, as the majority of people and lawmakers can’t seem to work together and get anything done, that power companies and line workers are a different breed that work together for the greater good, all year long. It’s what they do.
These teams carry specialized equipment to
weather-ravaged regions, but they also take the expertise and grit needed to face down damaged infrastructure and unpredictable conditions. These teams roll toward the devastation.
I have interviewed linemen before.
“During outages, a lot of people don’t understand that there is a protocol involved in troubleshooting and repair work,” a lineman told me a few years ago. “No matter how angry or upset a customer is, we have to follow proper safety protocol, because at the end of the day, we do not want to jeopardize anyone’s life.”
“We can’t just ride out somewhere and reconnect a cable,” he added.
“We have to ride it out and make sure that it isn’t resting on the ground somewhere before we re-energize the line. We have to put our eyes on it because that’s the safe way to do it. It would be horrible if we simply reconnected a line and a child was down the road touching the line on the ground. Most people don’t think about that, but we do.”
I asked him about how he felt about leaving his family to travel out of town.
“When we need them, they come here and help us, and when they need us, we go there and help them,” he told me. “It’s neighbors helping neighbors.”
With thousands of homes without electricity, it will take a long time to restore power to the rural areas of Georgia, and this will be a difficult time for the broken-hearted residents dealing with the trauma of the storm.
“Hang on! The cavalry is coming! Help is on the way!” I whispered to myself on Saturday, as I saw the utility trucks racing down the interstate. I waved at some of the drivers and blew kisses to others, because in my book, they are heroes — superheroes, really.
As in other natural disasters, I’m reminded of a quote by Mr. Rogers:
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” It’s true, there are so many helpers among us, and these helpers — friends, family, neighbors, linemen, food pantry workers, etc. — fill me with such hope for humanity.

Hurricane Helene Devastates Georgia Farms
In the early hours September 27, Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on south, southeast, east and parts of central Georgia and made an exceptionally damaging impact on farms. Affected producers are reporting yield losses ranging from 35% to a total loss, depending on location in the state. Producers are also reporting significant losses in farm structures, equipment, and infrastructure. Official reports of losses will be coming in the coming weeks as University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service person-
nel collect data. It is, however, without question that losses will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Losses will extend well beyond the farm, as cotton gins, other agribusinesses, and rural communities will feel the ripples of Hurricane Helene’s aftermath for years to come. Producers are encouraged to document damage and losses before, during, and after cleanup as well as financial records of cleanup, repair, etc., as assistance and crop insurance may take some time. Industry leadership has been in touch with officials in Washington and Atlanta describing the effects of the storm. We ask
that the public continue to keep farmers, farming communities, and the families of those who lost their lives in their thoughts and prayers.

Goodbye Hurricane Helene and Good Riddance
By Dick Yarbrough
Hello, Hurricane Helene. Goodbye, Hurricane Helene. Please pardon us for showing a lack of Southern hospitality, but you were not welcome to come in the first place, and we are glad to see you go. Speaking of hospitality, you didn’t show much yourself. You just roared in and made a pluperfect mess of things.
You were referred to as a “Monster Storm.” That is what Category 4 storms are. Monsters. You hit our neighbors in Florida with winds of 140 miles per hour and storm surges of 20 feet or more.
Then you came into Georgia and made life intolerable for my friends in South Georgia before you headed up through the state dishing out misery in the form of high winds and heavy rains and abandoning us for the Carolinas and Tennessee.
As of this writing, you have left at least 11 dead in Georgia and more than a million without power, not to mention flashfloods.
Maybe I was too focused on girls when I was growing up, but I don’t remember dealing with the number of hurricanes and tropical storms and tornadoes in Georgia that we have experienced over the past several years: Hurricane Michael. Hurricane Irma. Hurricane Idalia. Now, you. And there is no question that there will be more to come.
Some blame the frequency and strength of hurricanes on global warming. Climate change proponents say that the number of Category 3 or above hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean has doubled since 1980.
Too much greenhouse gas, like carbon dioxide and methane, they say. The fossil fuels trap the sun’s heat, leading to warmer water, moist warm air and light upper winds. Hurricanes suck up heat and wind and beef up like a bodybuilder on steroids. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says just one hurricane can churn out about half as much energy alone as all the electrical generating capacity in the entire world. That’s a lot.
I’m not going to get into the climate change debate. There are those who say it is a bunch of tree-hugger hooey. But no matter which side you are on, we can all agree that hurricanes do bad things.
I will give you credit, Helene; you and your hurricane colleagues are small-d democratic. You wreak havoc regardless of race, creed, color or political affiliation. You kill people. Damage or destroy homes and buildings. Wipe out crops. Cause power outages. Pollute drinking water. Tear up roads and bridges. Disrupt the lives of thousands of people. You are pretty much in discriminant.
But guess what? You cause a lot of good things to happen as well. A Democratic president and a Republican governor put aside their political differences for a moment and, instead, put the people first. Both President Joe Biden and Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency in Georgia, which allowed federal and state agencies to coordinate all disaster relief efforts. No posturing. No taking political credit. It is rare, but it can happen.
As mentioned, you left about a million people without power in Georgia and reminded us that we are blessed with brave and unsung heroes. I am talking about Georgia Power Company crews and their counterparts from Georgia’s Electric Membership Corporations who will climb poles, battle fallen trees, handle potentially-lethal downed wires and restore service. They will be joined by hundreds of utility workers from more than a dozen states who will assist them. I have issues with Georgia Power ham-handed lobbyists, but not their workers.
To the list of unsung heroes I will add Georgia’s National Guard. Gov. Kemp called up a total of 1,500 troops to respond to “dire situations across the state.” I’m not sure what those situations will entail, but I am sure our National Guard will perform superbly. They always do, whether it is in a foreign country or in Lowndes County.
Finally, Helene, you took on one of the most resilient groups of people walking God’s earth. Our farmers. You aren’t the first hurricane to try and knock them out of business. Whether it’s peanuts, pecans, peaches or poultry, Georgia’s farmers will always come back, no matter what you throw at them. What would we do without our farmers? We couldn’t.
Those reading this correspondence will see it on different days in different parts of the state and likely some of the numbers or conditions will have changed when they do. But one thing will not. You gave us your best shot and you failed. We are still here and you are not. Goodbye, Helene. And good riddance.

the community, but has also helped bring in more people to alleviate some of the stress from Altamaha EMC linemen, who are struggling from the recent disaster.
“We’re bringing in anyone who we can bring in. A lot of times, we can’t even get down the roads to fix all the lines, so that is why we are bringing in all of these tree cutting services to work ahead of us,” Vaughn stated. “Our employees don’t even have power at their houses. Some of our employees have trees on their houses and their families can’t even live there. But they’re working. I see the exhaustion and devastation on the Will Ledfords and Jeffery Lawsons every morning when they come in here because they’re not with their families and they are doing what they can. Today is Day 6 –- Jeffery Lawson got a toothbrush in his hand today for the first time since this storm started. He asked me yesterday, ‘Can you please get me a toothbrush and some toothpaste’.”
In the midst of tragedy, the community is remind-
ing Vaughn and the workers of the giving nature of local residents. “We are so grateful to this community. Now that people are getting a sense of normalcy back to their lives, they’re bringing in things to us,” she explained. She said that children and young people had made encouraging signs thanking the linemen, donations of drinks and snacks had come in both to the site and to linemen on the street, and community
members had even offered to feed the cooperative’s office workers and families when able.
“It means so much to us,” Vaughn tearfully remarked. “The good people that are in this community that are pulling together to help each other, to help their neighbors cut trees off their driveways, to bring water to the EMC, whatever it is they’re doing — God is at work in this community. And sometimes, God uses a storm to get our attention and bring us back together. I really think that just like after 9/11, that this storm is going to do that for
the state of Georgia.”
According to Vaughn, Georgia Power and Altamaha EMC help each other through a mutual aid agreement. “Even though Georgia Power and EMC are competitors, we have the same mission: for them to supply power to their customers, and for us to supply power to our members. That’s the only difference,” Vaughn commented.
“Normally, in a bad storm, Georgia Power gets all of their power restored before we do because they are on city streets and there are not as many trees. Their population is more con-
densed to a small area – they are not out on dirt roads and things like we are. That’s not even going to be the case this
time because there was just such destruction in their area, too. Whoever gets
A GRATEFUL COMMUNITY – Community members have been going out of their way to donate supplies and even make encouraging signs to thank linemen for the work they are doing in the area. (Shown) Braylie Davis (right) and Kash Waller (left) show two signs made to hang up at the Storm Services site.

finished first will help the other.”
Both electric companies are also depending on the work of Georgia Transmission, whose mission it is to maintain the transmission power lines that bring power from the power plants to the people. “We are still waiting on some transmission lines to come back up. Transmission lines are what brings the power from the power plants to the distribution cooperatives, like us. So, until the transmission lines are up and running, it doesn’t matter how much work we do — the power is not going to come back on until that transmission line gets power,” she said.
Vaughn estimates that all but 4 of Altamaha EMC’s 18 substations are receiving power from these transmission lines. She also believes that around 5,000 of the over 21,000 meters on Altamaha EMC’s circuit have had power restored, but cannot be exact because of the widespread damage to the cooperative’s system. “All of our meters are automated. We communicate with our meters through the electric lines. So, we are not able to communicate with our meters to ‘ping’ them to know if electricity has been restored. So, it’s hard for us to say how many meters we have back on,” she explained. She encouraged the public to remain patient, as she said that the cooperative was doing all that it could to help light the area.
Vaughn also stated that internet through Altamaha Fiber was down as well, as the internet lines run parallel to the power lines. “Just because you get power back does not mean that you will have internet. The damage to the internet system was catastrophic, too, so it will be a while,” she said.
For those Altamaha Fiber members that have power restored, members may unplug and replug their wireless router to attempt to reboot the internet; if internet is still not available after performing this process, then the service is down until repaired.
“Electricity is a necessity – internet is a luxury,” Vaughn remarked, as she assured that the cooperative’s top priority was restoring power to its members.
Longshoremen's strike silences Georgia ports
By Dave Williams Bureau Chief Capitol Beat News Service
The ports of Savannah and Brunswick were closed for a second day Wednesday, the result of a longshoremen's strike affecting ports along the East and Gulf coasts from Maine to Texas. The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) is seeking a significant pay raise from the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), a shipping industry group representing terminal operators and ocean carriers, as well as an end to the use of automated cranes, gates and container-moving trucks in unloading or loading freight.
“USMX brought on this strike when they decided to hold firm to foreignowned ocean carriers earning billion-dollar profits at United States ports but not compensate the American ILA longshore workers who perform the labor that brings them their wealth,”
Harold Daggett, president of the 85,000-member ILA, wrote in a statement posted on social media.
“We are prepared to fight as long as necessary, to stay out on strike for whatever period of time it takes, to get the wages and protections against automation our ILA members deserve.”
The Georgia Ports Authority, which operates both the Savannah and Brunswick ports, said in a
prepared statement it will reopen once the union and management reach an agreement.
"We enjoy a good working relationship with our local labor partners and are not involved in the contract negotiations in New Jersey," the authority wrote.
