A Semi-Annual Newsletter for ASJA & SJA Alumni, Alumni Families, Parents, and Friends
Our dedicated faculty and staff are at the heart of this mission. Their love and compassion for every student is evident in the relationships they form with not only their students but the families and community as well They inspire and motivate students to reach their full potential while creating a classroom where every student is valued and loved. I am so grateful for their commitment to nurturing each child and living out the Gospel values each and every day
The end of a school year always leaves me with a profound sense of awe and gratitude. I feel true amazement for how much the students have grown in what feels like such a short period of time And I feel deep gratitude for all the love and education our faculty have poured into our students, as well as gratitude for the investment our community continues to so faithfully make in our school.
Walking through the halls of the Academy, I am filled with joy to see the learning that is happening all around. On a daily basis, students are thinking deeply about the world around them and that is centered around prayer and the love of Jesus The classrooms are places of high expectations where students are challenged to think critically, work collaboratively, and strive for excellence in all they do.
The Academy is such a special place. A place where every child is known and loved and centered around a Christ-filled culture of joy

Honoring our root belief that “We are made in the image and likeness of God” Academy students continue to weave service to each other and our community into every day at The Academy.
Service highlights from the year included a thriving Service Learning Club, Buddies (our longstanding upper/lower grade mentoring program) and much more This year ’ s all-school Service Week had students engaging in all sorts of service from sorting books at Bernie’s Book Bank, writing cards to veterans, and singing songs to our friends at the neighboring Presbyterian Home. Our 8 Graders made a special overnight field trip to the city to volunteer at Share our Spare and The Academy Students continued their partnership with Arc of Hope.
“Doing community service at my school makes me feel proud that I can help people.”

It’s a busy time for Saints athletics! The Evanston Catholic Knights won the championship, and our beloved Saturday Morning Basketball tradition continued with Tom Stanton, P ‘29, ’30, ‘33 and Tom Glynn, P ‘26, ‘28, ‘31 at the helm. Meanwhile, all of the 5th-8th grade Saints teams competed well in girls and boys basketball, with the boys 8th grade team, led by Coach Pat Russell, making it all the way to the championship game The Saints girls’ 5th-8th volleyball teams had a fun season as well
The Saints track and field team brought home medals each week in different events and many of our runners qualified for and placed at State. Finally, members of our Saints’ Club Golf Team, coached by Jed Curtis, P ‘29, ‘31, learned a lot and continued to improve their skills each week.
“Playing sports at ASJA has meant so much to me because I’ve played with my friends and it has taught me what it means to be a good teammate.”

The arts shined brightly this year with each Academy student from preschool through 8th grade given a chance to explore their creativity and the confidence to share their talents with the world. Highlights included an incredible arts-focused field trips, the Christmas and Spring Shows, participation in many area art shows and festivals, and a fantastic production of Shrek, Jr.
This Spring we launched our Inaugural Art Expo, providing an opportunity for all students to showcase their artistic talents, including those they develop outside of school The evening was a tremendous success!
“When I’m on stage I know that my school is supporting me and that gives me courage and inspires me to be more creative.”

Students are able to grow their faith each and every day in big and small ways at The Academy, from starting their days with prayer, to leading Stations of the Cross
The Academy partners with St John Henry Newman to offer weekly masses and sacraments This past year, 31 Academy students received the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. As a “Catholic School for people of all faiths” we intentionally find creative ways for all students to grow in their faith including participation in services and The Academy Student Choir.
"I like going to a Catholic school even though I'm not Catholic. I enjoy the stories and traditions, and I always feel included. “

Some ofyou might rememberJack Quinlan, the Cubs radio broadcaster from 1955-1965 Jack and hiswife Marilynwere SJAparishioners and school parents, raising their four children Marni ‘66, Sue ‘70,Jack ‘72 and Patrick ‘75 in the red brick house on the corner of Emerson and Springfield.
Jack’s daughter Sue shared that kids in the neighborhoodwould often be invited to go to a game and ride toWrigleyField in Mr Q’s red convertible.
Sadly, on March 19, 1965, at the Cubs spring training in Mesa,Arizona,Jackwas killed in a car accident. Hewas 38.
Blackhawksvoice Pat Foleytold the storyof his 10-year-old selfvisiting the Cubs’ radio booth and meeting Quinlan “That daywas so enthralling for me that mymother saidwhen I came home, I said, I knowwhat I’m gonna do But a lot of that had to dowith his generosityto me Between innings, I’d ask him a stupid question, and he wasn’t put off byit He helped me Iwrote him a thank-you letter after, hewrites me back. Hewas just a nice man and a great broadcaster.” (1)
Bob Costas shared “Verysimply, ifwe are going on sheer broadcasting abilityand qualityofwork, Jack Quinlan is among the best radio baseball broadcasters I have ever heard.
Voice, pacing, sense of humor, attention to detail, excitement when it was called for, all the elements you look for in a baseball broadcaster” (2)
The Baseball Hall of Fame (HOF) in Cooperstown honors a baseball broadcaster each year with its Ford Frick Award. In the past, the HOF’s voting committee chose 7 of the 10 broadcasters who would be on the ballot for a given year. The final three slots were determined by a month-long public vote In 2015 - 50 years after Jack’s passing - he was among the top 3 vote-getters A remarkable response, considering his career was cut short and he had been gone for decades
The HOF has revised the Ford Frick Award eligibility process several times in recent years. Jack is expected to be eligible for consideration in 2027. While public voting is no longer part of the selection process, we can still channel our SJA spirit and rally behind Jack’s nomination. As the process moves forward, we’ll keep you updated on howwe can make our voices heard and support one of our own
Read more here about Quinlan’s career and efforts to get him into the Cooperstown HOF.

I have been going to ASJA for 11 years, and I have met many people who have helped me in so many ways Some of my favorite memories at The Academy, and SJA were when I was in Preschool, and painting pictures on easels, all the way to going on a service trip in February. I will be forever grateful for the community that has helped me to be the person that I am today I look forward to the many sporting games and school events that I will go to once I graduate I hope that my children can have a community like this when they are growing up, so that they can be great people.
Lucas F.
I've been going to this school my whole life, and during my time here I have learned so many things, and I have met so many people and made so many friends. It is going to be sad leaving the only place I've been to school and especially the fun field trips like Chicago, D C, and many other places During my time at ASJA, I have made so many memories, and I will never forget my time here. I can remember when the carnival used to come to the school for two days at the end of the year and I had so much fun with my friends there. It's sad that next year I won't be coming back but I know high school will be an amazing experience
Maya H.
I've been going to The Academy of Saint Joan of Arc since 4th grade. ASJA has taught me so much throughout the years, it has taught me to be kind and respectful, but best of all it has taught me how to become a better person! One of my favorite memories/experiences at ASJA was going to Washington DC In Washington I experienced so much like going to the White house, going to the capital, and going to lots of museums One of my favorite parts of DC was the bus rides and going to Dave and Busters! I also loved getting to spend time with my friends! My time at Saint Joan of Arc is something I will never forget.
Leo K.
have only been at The Academy of Saint Joan of Arc for 4 months. From the first day I stepped into the school I knew it was the right decision for me to attend this school Everyone in the building welcomed me, especially all my classmates The community at the Academy is a big reason why everyone loves going here and it has changed my life. I am thankful for the opportunity and the amazing education my teachers have given me.
Alex M.
My experiences here at The Academy were fun and full of great memories that I will be able to look back upon when I think of my childhood here in Evanston There were not only highs to remember but also lows that serve as lessons and the middle school experience wouldn’t be the same without them and wouldn’t be as important without them. The academics of this school will also be the basis for my education further on in high school and I am sure it will continue to pop up in my life as I age I hope many generations of children will continue to come to this wonderful school and have good experiences as well.
Bailey H.
I have gone to Saint Joan of Arc my entire life, and I have received a really wonderful education, as well as lessons in friendship and manners Some of my favorite memories are the Gravy Bowl, Catholic Schools Week, and the seventh and eighth grade trip to DC. Recently, my eighth grade class and I took a trip to Chicago, where we were able to volunteer, as well as hangout and have fun at the Hostel. I was so happy this school provided us this wonderful opportunity, as is it was one of the last times I got to make long-lasting memories with kids I might not be going to school with next year This school has very much prepared me for high school by installing Catholic values and creating a wonderful environment for me to grow up in. I will miss attending this school so much, and am so grateful for everything it’s given me.
Hi my name is Viki, and this is my first year The people here have become my new friends, and I hope that next year, we will still be friends When I came to this school, I couldn’t speak English. When I start going to school people would talk with me and they taught me to speak in English. The first 4 months were so hard for me, all the studying and the tests were so hard. Every teacher helped me with some small things but for me really big things My favorite trip was the one to the Springfield and it was my first trip there The Academy has helped me learn so I can continue to on to high school in English I still have a lot of things to learn, but doing some presentations in front of the whole class is hard but helps me with my English. I'm so happy that I could come to this school, I'm going to miss this school and the people so much when I go to high school. Viki N.
Dennis R.
I have been at this school since I was three years old. Some of my favorite memories of ASJA are field day, the penny carnival, and Catholic Schools Week Some things I learned from The Academy are how important your community is around you The ASJA community has always been with me through tough times. Even when I leave for high school the community will always be there for me. You can take me out of ASJA but you can't take ASJA out of me.
Olivia W.
I’ve been going to this school since I was in 4th grade. When I came to this school it took me a while to fit in, but throughout the years I have been here I have learned to love it This school has taught me a lot throughout the years, like the people I have met and the things I have learned The relationships and the memories that I made during my time here are things I will never forget Some of my favorite memories were the Washington D.C trip, Springfield, and Field day. When I go to high school now I will feel very qualified because of the way this school prepared me. I am very lucky to have been able to go to this school and I will never forget it
Eleanor E.
Having gone to the Academy since preschool, the students and staff have created memories that will last a lifetime. For example, the chicks in Ms. Mirabella’s class helped to teach us to be responsible, even at a young age. From the carnival here in the school parking lot, to the early mornings with Saturday Morning Basketball games, and from Mrs Dillon and Mrs Caplice as my preschool teachers, to all of my middle school teachers I look forward to seeing the welcoming faces of the staff as I walk into the building and to all the parents that come and cheer on all of our sports teams. This school has taught me about the importance of community and friendship and has prepared me greatly for high school.
Mary H.
My name is Mary, I have been at The Academy since third grade, and since then I have made many memories I have learned many things here, but something I won’t forget is that this school has brought me closer to Jesus, the Lord and Savior. This school has prepared me for high school, especially with note taking and writing essays.
Krishna S.
I've been at this school since the middle of 5th grade I was nervous because I was going into the school in the middle of a school year but I fit right in
Everyone was very welcoming and helped me fit right in. I'm going to miss the trips we went on, such as Washington D.C and the Hostel in Chicago. The school's traditions gave me many memories and helped me develop as a person I also made a lot of friends during my years at this school I appreciate everything this school did for me and how it will help me in the future
Lena H.
I transferred to the Academy for my last year of middle school, and from day one, I immediately realized that this school was different. The teachers and staff were so dedicated to helping every student thrive, and every student was determined to make everyone feel welcome, whether they were lifelong ASJA students, or newcomers like me. I am so grateful to my 8th grade teachers, especially Dr Cook, for giving me the resources and tools to learn and grow in and outside the classroom. My favorite memory from the Academy was the Springfield trip, where we explored the town, ate dinner together, and had a crazy bus ride back. Thank you again to the Academy at St Joan of Arc for making me feel I belonged
Peter I.
I have been at The Academy for 10 years, since preschool. I have made many lifetime friends and learned many lessons with them here at the Academy I have grown up and learned to do many important things here at this school, and have had many great experiences. Such as the penny carnival in which I sadly missed for both 6th and 7th grade, but little me spent a lot of pennies there. Not only those in school events made it great but playing sports with my friends at school, and other local schools was very enjoyable Even though I wasn’t great at football I had a wonderful time playing with my good friends. This school taught me not only in wits but spiritually in mass and religion class. The best part of the school will be the wonderful friends I made along the way.
Ivy M.
ASJA is a great school and I have made many memories here. I remember going to Washington D.C and seeing the Smithsonian Museum, which is now one of my favorite places which I would love to visit again My school has taught me many things, like knowing how to write an essay in English class, the history of World War II in Social Studies, and the difference between Ser and Estar in Spanish class. This school has taught me how to be prepped for high school both academic wise and social wise and I couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you ASJA for being such an amazing school with the kindest teachers and the most fun students I have ever met.
Tommy G.
Greetings, I’ve been going to this amazing school since Kindergarten I have learned so much in all of my classes For example, our Reading teacher, Dr.Cook, has taught me how to cite anything I want. My favorite memory from this school is, in 5th grade, when I got to race my teacher Mrs.Olivar. I won and we didn’t have homework for the rest of the week. I have made so many friends and I will never forget this school
Miles O.
I have been going to St Joan of Arc since I was in Junior Kindergarten Since then I have learned and grown so much. But most importantly the memories I made here are with my friends. Some of the best memories I made here were memories I will never forget. Whether we went to a pep rally or were at the penny carnival or the student teacher volleyball games But the most fun I’ve had at this school are just recess or lunch with my friends I will forever remember the memories I made here and be forever grateful for my years here.
Theo A.
My overall time at ASJA has been a good experience that will help me in the future My favorite memories at The Academy were the D C field trip, the Chicago Service Trip this year, and all the fun events I've participated in ASJA has taught me many things including your actions have consequences, grades matter, it’s important to focus in class and many other things that I didn’t know before coming here. After my time here I feel very prepared for high school.
Elisabetta P.
I have been at St. Joan of Arc since I was 3. This school has taught me so many valuable lessons and I have made so many friends during my time here that I will cherish forever. My favorite things here were the sports I did My favorite memories here were the Washington D C trip with my whole class. My favorite sports I did here were track and volleyball. Track has always been so much fun, especially going down to state last year with my teammates. I have learned so much from all of my teachers over the years and I am so lucky to have gone here my whole life and I will miss it very much
Jude A.
I have been going to ASJA since 6th grade, and it has given me many opportunities, lessons, and friendships that I will cherish forever I have learned so much from all of my teachers and appreciate all that I’ve been taught by them. I have made so many friends, and I admire all of the strong friendships I have. I enjoyed the service field trips and truly learned the aspect of service. I want to continue to serve others through the next chapters of my life. Throughout the time I have spent here, I feel blessed to have gone here, and I will forever be grateful.
Rose D.
Since I was 3 I have continued to grow in multiple ways because of St Joan of Arc Some of my favorite opportunities that I have been given throughout my years were the D.C trip, Springfield, and the Carnival. These trips and experiences have brought me closer to friends and helped us share memories that will last a lifetime. Without St. Joan of Arc I would have never been able to meet the amazing people that I did and could never live without One of my favorite memories was running around the carnival either going on the hang gliders or the rockstar rides Thank you so much St. Joan of Arc for everything I have been able to accomplish and I truly would not be where I am today without this school.
I have attended Saint Joan's for my entire life and made many great memories here I made memories from my first day here in 2013 as well as this year in 2025 Whether it's making friends or learning how to survive in the world, Saint Joan's has taught me many lessons I will be moving in June to Washington DC and I will be leaving this community behind. But I know that my friends and I will stay in touch and this community will help me and my family through this change. In every single room in this school I could name a specific good memory. In the gym, hitting a game winner during Saturday morning basketball Mr Ruske's room finding out we have 2 weeks off of school (at the time that sounded good) And all of the amazing holiday parties in this building. I have made some of the most memorable memories here in this building I will carry with me forever. Will C.

I have been at the Academy since I was in preschool, and I have learned so much here that has shaped my life and future I have made so many lifelong friends that are the best people to spend time around Some of my favorite things that I have experienced here are the DC trip in 7th grade and the carnival when I was little. The community here is so welcoming and I feel like everyone knows each other and welcomes new people into the community. All my friends and the people in my class feel like one big family and I am so comfortable around them that I feel like I can trust them with anything. The teachers that I have had here, even when I was little, have made a massive effect on me, they have taught me so much and I have enjoyed every single teacher that has taught me here! I will never forget all the amazing moments that have happened to me here, and I will never forget this school!

Some of my favorite memories of ASJA are field day, the Penny Carnival, and Catholic Schools week. Some things I learned from The Academy are how important your community is around you. The ASJA community has always been with me through tough times. Even when I leave for high school the community will always be there for me

Although I didn't come here until fourth grade, and haven't been at this school as long as some, I still got to experience so many great moments and memories that I hope to remember forever. Over the years, I have enjoyed playing basketball and volleyball here The main thing I will always remember is the people I have gotten to meet and know When I go to high school next year, I may not be as close with all of the people I know now, but I will still have the same connections and relationships that I have built here. I will miss it here so much, but I am also excited for the years to come

Since I was 3 years old in Preschool I’ve been attending Saint Joan Arc and when I came here I was instantly accepted into a great friend group I have kept my friends for all of the years I’ve been here. This school can create great school memories, and the teachers throughout all the years were fun and funny While being at the school I have had great memories, for example at the carnival I used to eat cotton candy With one of my friends we went on the zipper more than 10 times in a row then after that I’ve been scared of every carnival with that ride. Thank you to the great school for all that I’ve learned here and in all the ways it helped shape me as a person.

At the Academy at Saint Joan of Arc I’ve made so many memories here throughout the years I have been here since preschool Some of my favorite memories about Saint Joan's were the Carnival at the end of school, the eighth grade play and Boosterthon. This place has always had a place in my heart because I grew up here. I have made so many friends here that will last a lifetime. I learned how to communicate with teachers and peers when times get hard This school really shows the family aspect of our community. We all live very close to each other and ever since we were little running around Central Park has always been great memories for us

My experience at the Academy of Saint Joan of Arc has taught me so much I have learned so much from teachers, students and friends and how to take care of myself My earliest memories are passing out treats to the class on the day of my birthday, the first day of school. Singing in the choir, raising money for my school in the Fun Run, hanging out at the carnival on the last day of school and playing on the playground. This school has taught me how to be successful in high school by teaching me how to be responsible and be on time for class and work.

Although I have only been going to ASJA for two years, I have had an amazing experience here and have learned so many valuable things. I am going to miss all the friends I’ve made and keep the long lasting memories with me like the trips to D.C, Chicago, and much more. My classes have taught me so much, like learning to speak Spanish, and World History. This is an amazing school and I am so grateful to have gone here.

The Academy has been my home for the past 5-6 years, and Saint Joan of Arc earlier on I have made many fond memories with my friends and teachers at this school over the years. I have learned valuable skills like note taking from the past years in Mr. Paynes class. Some of my favorite memories that I have made here are Fun Run over the years, and the party on the last day of school. I always loved the whole last week of school with field day and all the activities the older kids organized The Academy has been my home for basically my whole life and it has been so kind to me
Some of my favorite memories are from the Academy. Most of them center around the community. Whether I was laughing at jokes, singing in the hallway, or getting into heated debates about choir, I was always doing it with someone else who had my back These memories and this school have given me the resources to create connections and find communities in the next chapter of my life.
My name is Lenox, and I have been going to the Academy for three years now I moved here in the beginning of the summer of 2022, and I shadowed here and instantly knew this was the place for me to complete my middle school years. This community welcomed my brother and I with open arms. The amount of memories I have made here, and lessons I have learned are endless, and I thank God for that. This group of people that I have gone through my middle school years with, have shown me lots of different ideas and perspectives on things Since the middle of the sixth grade year everyday at recess and I have made so many memories in those twenty minutes a day. If I could go back in time to go to a different school I would definitely choose ASJA.
I have been at this school since 7th grade, and have had such great experiences. I have learned so much in my classes, and am going to miss all of the fun times and memories This year, I did cheer for school Some of my favorite memories are from having fun at recess, or meeting up with our kindergarten buddies I will always remember this school in the way I felt welcomed. I am excited for high school, but I will miss my memories and experiences and the connections I made at school.

There is so much to say about this school ASJA has taught me so much, especially preparing me for high school This school gave me so many memories The overnight field trips and even the day field trips were so much fun .The students at ASJA are great and buddies are the best. Any time we had buddies it was so much fun. It was the best part of my day. ASJA has allowed me to meet many new people. I have met some of my closest friends here. I want to thank all of my teachers for helping me to become the person I am today I am going to miss this class and all my friends and teachers I may be graduating but I am not leaving this community. This school is a family to me.
My name is Daniel and I have been at the Academy for 10 years. I love my experience at ASJA because of all of the kindness from teachers and students. The Academy has prepared me for high school by helping me be more organized and ready The Academy helped me be more social with fun activities with basketball and the summer carnival I will remember all of the fun memories I have had here I will always cherish the friendships I have had with my friends. You can leave The Academy, but it will never leave you.
No matter how many times I witness the generosity of our community in action, it never ceases to amaze This past December we launched our Inaugural Community Giving Campaign for Tuition Assistance and once again our community’s generosity surpassed all expectations In total we raised over $58,000 to help more students have the opportunity to attend The Academy
As an Independent Catholic School, The Academy receives no financial support from a parish, a religious order, or the Archdiocese of Chicago All funding comes exclusively through tuition and community support
This community support includes fundraising by our committed Parent Volunteer Community, primarily through the annual Fun Run and Gala
The school also receives generous support from our robust community of alumni, alumni parents and friends who support The Academy In countless ways,
St. Joan of Arc has had a long history of a vibrant, engaged, supportive community and we are thankful that energy and efforts continues at The Academy
Thank you for making It happen!
