A Message from Sr. Michelle It amazes me that March is right around the corner. Life goes by so fast. Mardi Gras break is upon us. It provides the girls with a break from school and more time they can spend together with their family. Often I found myself at games, plays, or other activities, sitting back and watching the girls interact with their parents.

It is so nice to see the love, pride and care the parents have towards their daughters and the respect and love with which the girls respond. I reflect on how blessed the girls are that their parents were willing to sacrifice so much for them to have a Catholic education.

Raising teenagers is a challenge. I think raising a teenage girl has an added level of stress because girls seem to worry about their appearance, what their friends think, and what the social media is telling them they should be and do. I congratulate all of you. I know God gives you the grace to be such great parents, but He doesn’t take away the challenges. Guiding them through adolescence is often an additional full-time job.

I came across a little pamphlet recently entitled, “150 Ways to Show Kids You Care.” Every morning I try to read one idea to help me focus on being truly present to them during the day. I would like to share a few of these ways that I have tried to put into practice.

1. Look into their eyes when you talk to them.

2. Tell them their feelings are okay.

3. Set boundaries that keep them safe.

4. Be yourself.

5. Present options when they seek your counsel.

6. Suggest better behaviors when they act out.

7. Learn what they have to teach.

8. Show up at their concerts, games and events.

9. Give them lots of compliments 10. Tell them how proud you are of them.

Please know that I pray for you and your daughters every day. I applaud the good job you are doing and would like to partner with you in this sacred mission of forming our girls however I can.

Service Week Service Week is a great tradition at Academy of Our Lady. For 11 years in celebration of Catholic Schools Week and St. John Bosco, students have been serving the Greater New Orleans area during the annual Service Week. Beginning January 27 – January 31 each class visited various non-profit organizations. Service sites included City Park, Wynhoven Healthcare Center, Arc of Greater New Orleans, Crossroads Louisiana, Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center, Second Harvest Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Eden House New Orleans, St. Paul the Apostle Head Start and the Jean Lafitte Barataria Preserve.

When not out on service, students attended presentations given by guest speakers on various topics directly related to the week’s overall theme, Pursuing Holiness Through Virtue. Topics covered were abortion, vocation, human trafficking, college safety, living virtuously, vaping, following your passion, college safety and charity. Also, new to service week, were career presentations given by numerous accomplished Archbishop Blenk High School, Immaculata High School and Academy of Our Lady alumnae from various professional fields.

Seniors visited and spent the day helping in various classrooms at St. Paul the Apostle Head Start Center and Early Head Start Center in New Orleans.

Principal Sr. Michelle Geiger, FMA spent time catching up with Mayor of Gretna and alumna Belinda Constant ‘74 ABHS. Mayor Constant spoke to students about her journey in politics as well as the balance of work and family.

Service Week Academy of Our Lady and Archbishop Shaw High School celebrated the Feast of St. John Bosco with mass presided by Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond on January 30. Following Mass students enjoyed lunch and participated in the annual Battle of the Birds competition.

During Battle of the Birds students participated in field day style games in competition between Academy of Our Lady and Shaw.

Academy of Our Lady and Archbishop Shaw High School students listened as Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond delivered his homily.

Members of the Archbishop Shaw High School and Academy of Our Lady choirs joyfully sang together during Mass hosted on Shaw’s campus.

Junior Tuyet Nhi Nguyen concentrated as she competed in the football toss game during the field day portion of the day.

Student council members from Academy of Our Lady and Archbishop Shaw High School participated in a competitive version of musical chairs as both student bodies cheered from the stands.

Pre-freshman Eden Becnel and sophomore Caylia Ellsworth proudly represented their grade level and won in the class games competition.

After a long joyful day of fun and celebration students gathered to sing their Alma Mater at the end of the afternoon.

Honor Society Induction On February 11 Academy of Our Lady celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes with a school Mass.

Following Mass students were honored for their academic achievements with the annual honor society induction ceremony. Academy of Our Lady Honor Societies include French Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, National Art Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Rho Kappa and Science National Honor Society.

Mu Alpha Theta members are invited to the honor society because they have shown superior promise and high achievement in the study of mathematics. The purpose of the society is to foster an even deeper interest in mathematics and its related fields. The Academy of Our Lady Chapter instills enthusiasm and passion for mathematics in all students by promoting recreational and academic opportunities. The members of Mu Alpha Theta assist others in understanding the value of mathematics and inspire students to see mathematics as a language of its own.

The purpose of the National Spanish Honor Society is to recognize high achievement in Spanish by students of secondary schools and to promote continuity in Hispanic studies.

The goal of Academy of Our Lady’s French Honor Society is to stimulate interest in the study of French, to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievements, to create enthusiasm for and an understanding of francophone culture, to promote and perpetuate international friendship, and to reward efforts toward furthering solidarity in the French-speaking world.

NYC Choir Trip Members of the choir, including pre-freshman Abigail Creppel, pre-freshman Madison Amaya, pre-freshman Laila Marcotte, freshman Marley Wilson, junior Catherine Reyes, sophomore Brianna Garrison, freshman Jenny Dang, sophomore Olivia St. Germain, Mrs. Melinda St. Germain, and Mr. Clark Knighten, visited New York City. Students were not only able to see numerous famous sites like the Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Plaza, they also attended a Broadway play, Tina. After the musical the choir members took a backstage tour and had dinner with one of the leading stars, Dawnn Lewis. The girls also made a small appearance on The Today Show as members of the audience outside the studio on the plaza.

Big Sis/Lil Sis Valentine’s Day Event By senior Amally Abdeljabar What better way of spreading love on Valentine’s Day than a courtyard filled with laughter and joy among the seniors and pre-freshmen?

On Friday, February 14, the big sisters and little sisters gathered for their monthly social.

The social started off with a competition. Penguin families competed against each other to see who could stack the most candy hearts on top of each other in 20 seconds. “I love the games we play and getting to know not only my little sisters, but also my friend’s little sisters, “ senior Kayla Hebert said.

After the competition, the big and little sisters received king cake in celebration of Mardi Gras. Families also enjoyed a Mardi Gras puzzle.

When asked what was your favorite part about the social, Hebert said “my favorite part is spending time with my little sisters and eating king cake.”

Big and little sisters always look forward to spending time with one another during their monthly socials.

Marian Club Retreat Members of the Marian Club recently participated in a club retreat which took place at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor on State Street in New Orleans. The students toured the Chapel, took part in activities designed to reflect on their relationship with Mary and listened to a few witness talks. The day ended with Mass at St. Rosalie followed by dinner at the Salesian Sisters convent.

Catholic Schools Week Mass

Mass Media & Speech The Fiat 4 news team, which is made up of students in the Mass Media class, recently collaborated with students enrolled in Speech. Speech students wrote a news script and Fiat 4 Mass Media students operated cameras, teleprompters, mics and video switchers to produce a mock newscast with them.

Several Ambassadors represented Academy of Our Lady at Catholic Schools Week Mass on January 31. Held at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Metairie, every Catholic school in the Archdiocese was represented in celebration of Catholic Schools Week.

Art III Mask Project Academy of Our Lady Art III students used their imagination and skills to craft masks as part of the annual mask project. Students made a mask that expressed something of their interest or about themselves. Students began by molding clay to form the desired face shape for the mask. Next, they painted and added extra creative pieces of interest to make their project complete.

Sophomore Retreat The sophomore class participated in their annual class retreat on February 17. The goal of the retreat is for students to strengthen their relationship with the Lord and grow in their faith with the support of their classmates.

World History Catapults In a collaborative activity with Robotics, Ms. Sumner’s World History students worked in teams to build mini catapults. The groups competed to see which catapult would send a rubber duck flying across the room the farthest. This was a culminating activity after studying about The Renaissance and Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks.

True Love Waits Week By senior Lindsey Nguyen This is what we have all been waiting for. The words we all needed to hear. And the people to remind us that true love does wait.

True Love Waits week occurred on February 10-14. The True Love Waits Club members and moderator Ms. Carla Sumner spent a lot of time and effort into planning events. This love-filled week consisted of many activities during lunch and an assembly with guest speakers on Wednesday.

In preparation for the week, TLW club members held an adoration. They asked God to help them keep their promise to live a pure life and to help students participate in the activities they had planned. “Having adoration before our assembly really helped to calm us down and focus on why we are having the assembly,” senior Gillian Decossas said.

Their prayers were answered as students wrote inspirational quotes on the banner, participated in the lunch activities, and interacted during the assembly. As laughter filled the gym, people realized the assembly was exactly what they were looking for. They just needed to hear and be reminded of it again.

The two guest speakers, Robin Kindrick and Lorraine Hess, kept the students interested the entire time by relating their stories to the audience. During the assembly, Kindrick called a student from each grade to come up and receive money. She had them do different things like crumple it, throw it, and step on it. This activity demonstrated the fact that “you will never lose your value,” Kindrick said.

Kindrick reminded girls that they are always precious in God’s eyes, and they shouldn’t lower their standards. “His loss, his bad,” she said and the crowd lost it. They clapped and cheered so loud because they finally understood the significance of self love.

Hess kept the assembly going by calling everyone to sing “I Am Worthy” with her. She shared stories about herself in high school that the students could relate to. One day she went to hang out with friends and there was this one guy. She couldn’t remember his face because she was so enamored with his personality. Hess explained that if you find a man who loves God more than you, he will know how to love.

The assembly had a lot to offer. It had guest speakers, a dating line skit, and the TLW club members pledge. Students enjoyed the dating line skit because it gave multiple scenarios providing students with advice on how to stay chaste.

True Love Waits hoped to impact the students by giving them the opportunity to participate in activities and interact with the guest speakers. It seemed like everyone enjoyed the assembly and TLW club member senior Gillian Decossas said, “I think it went very well, it went very smoothly. Both of the speakers were very engaging with the audience, and I know I had a lot of fun. It seemed like everyone else had a lot of fun too.”

Women in Careers Lunch By senior Aliyah Slack Graduating high school can be a scary thing especially if you’re not certain of the career path you want to take. On February 13 Student Union Diversity in Action club moderator, Mr. Clark Knighten, and SUDIA club members arranged for women working in various careers to talk with students during lunch for the annual “Women in Careers” event.

The amount of passion Mr. Knighten exhibits for this event can easily be recognized in the way that he speaks.

“Women in Careers, the way that I envisioned it, was an opportunity for positive women who are working in various professional careers to talk a little about what they do in an informal environment,” Mr. Knighten said.

Students were encouraged to look beyond typical careers and find a career path that incorporates something they love reinforcing the thought “you’ll never work a day in your life if you are doing something you love.”

It was an honor and a privilege for students to meet with the special guest of the “Women in Careers” lunch. One of the first speakers was Mrs. Knighten, Mr. Knighten’ s wife, who went to college and majored in business administration. She works for United Healthcare as an insurance agent. Two professional who work with the Xavier University Pharmaceutical department were in attendance as well.

Moving forward Mr. Knighten and SUDIA club members hope to continue hosting “Women in Careers”.

Feast of St. Blaise Father Lou and Father WIlgintz visited campus on February 3 to administer a blessing of the throat to students and staff members in celebration of the Feast of St. Blaise.

Basketball & Cheer Senior Night Senior members of the Academy of Our Lady Basketball Team and the Academy of Our Lady Cheerleading Squad were honored before the Penguin basketball team took the court to face NOMMA on February 4. Senior night is a time to thank these athletes and their families for their hard work, dedication and support given to the Academy of Our Lady athletic program.
