While formulating ideas for the film, our group immediately found similarities between our aspirations― we wanted a film that gave off the feeling of vintage and mystery.

After constructing multiple plots, we eventually settled around the concept of an "escape room." With that concept in mind, we formulated a story around it while staying true to the themes our group wanted.

FADE IN: Scene 0: Black screen with a subtle GLITCH. Camera lens opens, it adjusts for a few seconds, blurring and zooming in & out. A TIMER on the corner of the screen is prominent. A RED CIRCLE appears on the opposite corner, blinking.

Scene 1: Albert wakes up INT. ALBERT’S ROOM - DAY High angle of camera nearby bed.

Soft vintage eerie music is playing through the walls, while a radio host mumbles his words.

RADIO NARRATOR You’ve done your duty and have done it well. I ask no more of you, I shall set you free. You know the rule of theThe audio glitches.

The view is slightly blocked by a STICKY NOTE stuck to the camera’s lens, but we can see a MESSY BEDROOM from our perspective.

Ten seconds later, ALBERT slowly wakes up, sits at the edge of the bed to be slightly seen through the camera, and stretches his arms.

He then continuously blinks and rubs his eyes until his eyesight settles. Afterward, he turns his head and looks around his surroundings in a confused state.

END SCENE.

Scene 2: Bob awakens INT. BOB’S ROOM - DAY High angle of camera nearby bed.

Ten seconds later, BOB wakes up and sits in his bed with squinting eyes. He yawns. He scrutinises the room while staying still in the bed. After a few moments of staring into space, he decides to get up and explore. He steadily inspects the room, touching a few cluttered items here and there. BOB then heads towards the door, and tries to twist and shake the KNOB three times.

After coming to the realisation that there is no opening anywhere, he stands still, lost in thought. BOB shifts his gaze when he hears a BEEPING NOISE originating from the camera. He stares at it, then decides to ignore it and heads back to sleep.

END SCENE. Scene 3: Yesterday INT. ALBERT’S ROOM - DAY ALBERT steadily stands up from the bed and examines the room in circles. A few seconds pass, and he heads towards the door; it's

locked. He desperately turns the KNOB in then tries to use both his hands. ALBERT the door to no avail while looking for a resorts to BANGING his fists on the door

a repeated FRANTIC motion, then attempts to push down key. Eventually, he while asking for help.

ALBERT: (in a groggy and sleepy tone) “What the- okay, what happened again last night? Did I get drunk or something cause I don’t remember some stuff. I swear I am usually not the type to get intoxicated, but then again there is a first time for anything” Albert sleepily stumbles towards the window, checking for people he can call for help outside. There are none. He tries opening them, but they won’t budge.

ALBERT: “Is this some elaborate prank? Hahahaha alright folks you got me.

Billy is that you? Jim? You got me alright, time to let me out.”

Albert’s smile gradually starts to fade, his face turns serious and he speaks with more assertion in his voice.

ALBERT: “Hey, do you hear me? I said you GOT me. I want to get out AlREADY. (Brief Pause) Okay IT IS NOT FUNNY ANYMORE! LET ME OUT GODDAMMIT. At this point, Albert is pounding against the door and yells “HEY” over and over again quite a few times. At last he sinks down defeated; whimpering.

ALBERT: (Weakly) “Please… Just open the door… Geez…”

After making a few more noises, ALBERT realises that no one will respond and drops to the floor in a tired and defeated manner. He puts his head in his hands. A sudden BEEPING noise is heard a few

seconds later, originating from the vlog camera.

ALBERT: “Record.. Record? Why? Why the hell?!”

He grasps the camera into his hands and curiously plays with it for a moment. He jabs at it and tries to mess with the LENSES, but soon realises that it can neither be destroyed or turned off. He places the camera back on the bed. He stares at the camera and investigates it.

ALBERT: (talking to the camera) Where am I?? And what even is this? Why can’t you be turned off or broken?! (Muttering) Who’s bloody idea was it to place this here?

He frowns at the camera for a few seconds.

ALBERT: (Brief Pause) Wait… HAVE I BEEN KIDNAPPED?? This does not seem like a joke anymore. Oh god why is this happening?

ALBERT stands up and carries the camera as he looks around the room. He records his discoveries as he goes.

He spots a BLACK DESK. On top of that desk is a WORLD MAP, STATIONARY, a MORSE CODE LIST, THUMBTACKS, a RED BALL OF YARN, AND A CORKBOARD. On top of the corkboard, a SIGN in big red font says “Take 3 steps forward and 2 steps back.” He follows these instructions strictly; nothing happens. It’s silent. He goes back to investigating the desk.

He briefly slides his fingers on the map. Looking further, he checks the DRAWERS underneath the desk. Inside is a BIBLE and a MUSIC SHEET titled YESTERDAY by THE BEATLES.

ALBERT: “What is this? Looks like some academic mess. Huhhhghh what should I do with this.”

He reads it aloud.

ALBERT: Do you know where you are now? Are you happy with your present?

When yesterday, all your troubles seemed so far away, And now it looks as if —— He pauses, remembering the song.

ALBERT: (humming) When yesterday, all your troubles seemed so far away, And now it looks as if they’re here to stay. .

He recollects himself and continues to read.

ALBERT: From this place this quartet reigned. Shipping industry and boat building of sorts. .

He scans the sheet music once again.

ALBERT: Beatles.. They were that famous English band during the 60s.. “From this place this quartet reigned.” So.. from this location.. This quartet reigned. Quartet? Were The Beatles a quartet band?? I think so.. And so.. From this location, the Beatles reigned. They started in England that’s for sure.. Where was that place again? Ah! Liverpool! Liverpool, England! (show sheet music) [ Each line from the sheet music has a letter capitalized. ] LYRICS. Underlined letters are the ones with a whole note.

Humming the notes, he realizes something.

ALBERT: Why don’t they match..? Or am I reading it wrong?

He pauses and gasps, he seems to have an idea.

ALBERT: Oh wait!

ALBERT grabs a RED PEN from the stationary and writes down the capital letters on them.

ALBERT: A. S. T. N. A.. Astna? What the hell is that? Do I scramble these?

Astna.. Natsa.. Stana..S.. Satan. SATAN?!

He DROPS the SHEET and PEN. He inhales deeply but is interrupted by —— Build up of tense music is interrupted, it stops.

END SCENE. Scene 4: First Postcard INT. ALBERT’S ROOM - DAY We hear four AGGRESSIVE KNOCKS behind the door. Startled by the sudden noise, ALBERT almost drops the camera but manages to catch it in time. He points the camera’s view towards the door.

INT. BOB’s ROOM - DAY BOB gets up from the loud, unpleasant noise. He stares at the door, waiting for another sound to come.

A series of knocks follow― they follow a particular beat and rhythm. Bob listens, confused. Amid the knocking, the camera suddenly GLITCHES and transitions into a BLACK SCREEN. INT. ALBERT’S ROOM - DAY FADE IN to ALBERT’s vlog CAM. The camera is handheld in a moderately shaky motion, yet we can still see the DOOR. The KNOCKING ensues.

Once it stops, DARK & TENSE music starts.

ALBERT waits for a while after it stops, then carefully takes steps towards the DOOR. Once he reaches the door, he lowers the camera’s angle and gasps. The view showcases the WOODEN FLOOR and the DOOR. Half-underneath the door is a POSTCARD. He picks it up and reads it aloud.

ALBERT: “Why leave the factory— INT. BOB’s ROOM - DAY BOB: —when 50 workers are in their prime?” he finishes.

We see a CLOSEUP of the POSTCARD held in BOB’s hands. He flips it over.

INT. ALBERT’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING Attached are the GRAPHIC PHOTOS of JAMES DOBBIN, who died after being crushed with debris. There is another PHOTO of ANCHOR CHAINS AND STEAM. ALBERT makes an ALARMED noise.

ALBERT, horrified by the discovery, begins to shake and BANG on the door desperately. Alongside that, we hear a RINGING IN EAR sound.

ALBERT: Who are you?! What are you gonna do to me?!

He starts to panic and hyperventilate. He has a mental breakdown, thinking that he’s going to be executed. The SUSPENSEFUL music RISES and BUILDS UP. We hear a heavy BOX filled with FRAGILE ITEMS knocked over. They land on the floor with a LOUD CRASH and THUD. Music stops.

END SCENE. Scene 5: Bob’s discovery INT. BOB’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING After seeing the horrific photo, BOB starts running around his room to find an escape. We hear TENSE music joined with a faint sound of TICKING. Music stops, A FAINT EAR-PIERCING NOISE is heard coming from the RIGHT side of the wall. He grabs the camera and places it to see the angle of the wall. He gets the nearest GLASS of WATER and rushes towards the WALL as QUIETLY as possible. He puts the GLASS against the WALL and sticks his EAR beside it.

END SCENE. Scene 6: Glass through wall INT. ALBERT’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING ALBERT places the camera at a different angle, he is flooded with emotions of anxiety; he DROPS DOWN on the floor, knees together, and back to the door. He covers his face with his hands in anguish, massaging his head.

ALBERT: (yells and whines in desperation) This can’t be! What wha- I did nothing! I did nothing!

ALBERT: (rages/speaks the following in a crying tone) I don’t want to die! Especially for this… STUPID SCENARIO. Seriously what the hell! WHAT even is this crap supposed to be?!

As he shrinks down to a sitting position still silently whimpering, his hand gradually trails towards his pocket. Feeling around and pulling out a family locket. He then stares at it for a while.

ALBERT: “Gosh… I might not even see my own family again. What do I even doo? (Glances again). Agh I miss them, I wonder what they would think of me being in this situation and all, slowly dying never seeing daylight again. OH GOD if I am left here to slowly starve to deathagh! I don’t know if I can handle that.”

Albert begins to sob again but then takes one more glance at the locket.

ALBERT: “Wait wait, what am I thinking (sniffle). They wouldn’t want me to go out like this. I wouldn’t either. C’mon I got to pick myself up.

They would be counting on me to see them again.”

ALBERT: Prime… okay… so what’s the prime of someone’s life? Twenty years old? Maybe it’s 21? But what does 50 have to do with this?

What if it’s when a worker leaves his factory… somewhere around twelve noon after lunch? Just- ugh He begins to hyperventilate and squats while fidgeting with his fingers, trying not to cry.

ALBERT: No no no. Think of the phrase - ‘why leave the factory’. ‘Why’

sounds like the letter ‘y’. If the letter y leaves the factory, you’re left with…

INT. BOB’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING BOB (V.O) (whispering) Factor!

INT. ALBERT’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING ALBERT: And the workers?

He thinks deeply and stands up, back on his feet. We hear the sounds of PACING FOOTSTEPS. Overwhelmed, he begins to RAMBLE on his findings. He rushes towards the DESK, SLAMMING his hands on the table and placing the POSTCARD down. He tries to take DEEP BREATHS to calm himself.

INT. BOB’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING BOB: (quietly) They’re in their prime.. ! I remember.. My memories!

INT. ALBERT’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING ALBERT: Factors.. 50.. Prime.. Prime factors until 50! Wait.

He stares at the sign on top of the desk that states “MOVE THREE STEPS FORWARD AND TWO STEPS BACK”. His face lights up, coming to a realization.

ALBERT: 2..3..5..7..Three steps forward so 5 is the first one.. Then two steps back.. 47.. 43.. 5 and 43! 5 and 43.. 543.. 5 and 43..What does that mean? What does the scrambled letters satan mean..

INT. BOB’S ROOM - DAY, STORM We see BOB holding his ear against the GLASS pressed up to the wall. He seems thrilled. He quickly runs off to investigate more clues.

BOB: I do remember everything! I.. I had to trace some historical event and then I could get out of here.

END SCENE. Scene 7: Skulls and Isaiah INT. BOB’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING BOB seems to have come to a conclusion, as he decides to more serious approach to his situation. He heads to open DRAWERS, and also spots the MUSIC SHEET titled YESTERDAY BEATLES and a BIBLE. He quickly pulls them out and drops top of the desk——

As he traces the music sheet with his fingers, he grabs a RED PEN and PAPER from the stationary and underlines the letters with whole notes on top of them. On the paper, he writes down “SANTA”. He grabs a sticky note and writes “5 AND 43”. He grabs another one and writes “LIVERPOOL. ENGLAND”. BOB pins all of his notes onto the CORKBOARD. BOB: Santa.. 5 and 43.. Liverpool, England..

He grabs the POSTCARD and stares attentively at the PHOTOS attached. The FIRST PHOTO is a photograph of a LARGE WALL, with capitalised letters “IC” and small letters “ool”. A DEAD JAMES DOBBIN is in the centre of the photo. THE SECOND PHOTO is a photograph of PLAIN CHAINS and SMOKE. He grabs the PAPER pinned on the corkboard, which states “SANTA”. He places this alongside the SECOND PHOTO and ponders for a moment.

BOB: It’s coal.. Santa.. His sock..

He scans the room with his CAMERA, looking for a SOCK. He finds one that is hanging on the wall, underneath a PAINTING OF SKULLS. He heads towards the location. BOB shows the view to the camera. When he retreats his hand, it holds COAL and an OLD STAINED LETTER, unopened. He puts the camera down and does not read it aloud. He stares at the painting in front of him, showing it to the camera as well.

He zooms in to the MISSING NUMBERS on the FOREHEADS OF THE SKULLS and on the SIGNATURE at the bottom of the painting that shows the name “ISAIAH”.

BOB: If I translate these roman numerals… A sudoku puzzle?..

He begins experimenting with the puzzle. BOB reaches for the NOTE stating “5 AND 43” from the corkboard and jumbles the numbers together to find the answer.

BOB: 4, 3, & 5.

He traces his fingers horizontally and vertically along the painting as he speaks.

BOB: They all add up to 45.

He traces a square on every corner of the painting.

BOB: If it’s like this, it ends up with 41 and 49.. Hm. Unsure of the next move, he observes the painting a bit more. His face suddenly lights up.

BOB: Isaiah.. I’m sure I heard that name from somewhere.. Hmm.. The Bible?

He heads towards his DESK and opens the BIBLE to Isiah 43:5.

BOB: “Do not fear for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, And gather you from the west.

Subtle, but visible to the naked eye, marks west on its outlines with ink. He searches for the next verse. Verse 6 of chapter 43: BOB: I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back’. Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth.”

BOB grabs a STICKY NOTE and the RED PEN, he writes down (41”N, 49”W). Afterwards, he reaches for the MAP. END SCENE. Scene 8: Cheat code INT. ALBERT’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING As ALBERT continues to SOB on the floor, his hand hits the WOODEN SURFACE and it lets out a LIGHT CREAK. He spots a WHITE STRIP of FORTUNE COOKIE PAPER trapped by the WOODEN BLOCKS.

He pulls it out and opens it to see a CHEAT CODE, or so he thinks.

It’s an ARROW. He grabs the camera and looks to where it points, and zooms in to a SOCK using his camera. He gets up to reach for it.

ALBERT: Wait.. It wasn’t satan.. But Santa? I can’t believe I- Whatever..

The camera placed very close, he reaches inside the sock and finds COAL and an OLD STAINED LETTER. ALBERT: The postcard!.. It was.. Tsk. He places the camera somewhere near. He makes an ANNOYED noise and RIPS open the old stained letter. He shows it then reads it aloud.

ALBERT: “To my sons: The very waves sang the song we knew. Risked all merely rue. I failed. By merely one, cruel fate, left for me to calculate. To have come so far and risked it all. To try, to fail, to fall. My kins with but a future unknown, the price? A sodden crown.”

He thinks for a while.

ALBERT: What price did he mean that revolves around a sodden crown??

Distracted, he feels a DENT underneath the letter. He RUBS the coal against it and it reveals another clue.

He heads towards his DESK and grabs the STICKY NOTES and the RED PEN, placing the camera down. He writes down his first attempt at decoding on a STICKY NOTE. V. WNHM QNAJ WTDFQYD. UJFXFSY QNAJ UFBS.

ALBERT: V? What does that mean.. Hold on.. First letter, V. For Victory?

Vegetable, valentine?- … *sigh* guessing is too random. It probably has to stand for either I or A. It’s the only two words that have one letter.

Pacing back and forth, he gets nowhere.

ALBERT: Chances are it’s in english. It wouldn’t make sense if I couldn’t figure it out. But then, the V has a period after it, so what if it’s a number. Oh could it- It’s a roman numerical number. Five.

BSMR VSFO BYIKVDI. ZOKCKXD VSFO ZKGX. He attempts two more times, but ends up crumbling and throwing away those STICKY NOTES. He swiftly grabs another STICKY NOTE, testing one more time.

RICH LIVE ROYALTY. PEASANTS LIVE PAWN. He brings the camera as he searches through the room. He spots a CHESS BOARD, already placed with their heavy figures of chess. He grabs a WHITE PAWN and inspects it CLOSELY. He uses the camera to ZOOM IN. ALBERT: It’s made of Mammoth Ivory..

He carries all of them back to his DESK and continues the riddle.

END SCENE. Scene 9: Magazines INT. BOB’s ROOM - DAY, RAINING

BOB flips through multiple MAGAZINES nearby his DESK, trying to find anything that coincides with the CARIBBEAN. BOB: Caribbean, caribbean. If my solution to the painting wasn’t incorrect, I’m sure something must’ve happened there..

He continues to rummage through the MAGAZINES, anything. He stumbles on one page with a photo quoting “All the water in the world can’t sink gets inside”. Other pages seemed to note words York Times” and “April 15”.

Completely lost in thought, he heads towards the DOOR and LIGHTLY TAPS his fingers. We hear KNOCKING behind the door. It seems to be a repeat of the previous knocking before the POSTCARD appeared. BOB taps the door once again, purposely. The same knocks repeat.

Coming to a realization, he quickly seizes the camera with his MORSE CODE LIST from the CORKBOARD and begins to place the camera down and ciphers the knocks.

As he finishes his cipher mentally, he seizes the camera once more.

END SCENE. Scene 10: Luggage INT. ALBERT’s ROOM- NIGHT, RAINING Agitated, ALBERT starts to ramble on his theories.

ALBERT: The first and last lines don’t make sense at all!! Everything’s clear! Except those lines! The father and two sons ran away but met a terrible fate, that was clear. “The very waves sang the song we knew”. What does the father keep talking about? “A sodden crown”?

Sodden means.. Soaked through.. Usually with water. Crown..

21 Monarchy? The royal family? Elizabeth?

What does that have to do with this?! Perhaps I’m looking at it in the wrong way.. The phrase seems familiar.. I think I’ve heard it somewhere before.

He stands still to think for a moment.

ALBERT: Oh! Jack fell down and broke his crown.. Crown means head.. So it means.. Rain.. and water is the only thing in common with rain and waves.. Is it really that simple? No way.

With the camera facing him while he investigates the room for sources of water, and spots a JUG/TEAPOT and a GLASS CUP on a TABLE. He tosses and turns the JUG in his hands and finds a PHOTO stuck underneath. He pins this PHOTO on the CORKBOARD. The PHOTO contains a RAGGED CLOSED TRAVELLING TRUNK with a “NEW YORK” STICKER on it. He zooms in on the trunk and spots a familiar SYMBOL engraved on its label.

He places the camera on a SEPARATE DESK, the camera view showcases the CORKBOARD and ALBERT. Using the corkboard and yarn, he begins to connect everything to the same symbol; from the cheat code, to the painting signature, and to the luggage photo. He adjusts the cheat code (found in the MIDDLE of the entire corkboard) pointing to the left and steps back with a thunderstruck expression.

END SCENE. Scene 11: Bored INT. BOB’S ROOM - DAY, RAINING BOB heads back to the DESK and grabs a STICKY NOTE; he writes down “MORSE CODE: BORED.(-... --- .-. . -..)”. He goes around the room and spots a CHESS BOARD. He places a PAWN PIECE into his hands and examines it.

BOB: 2 2 Is this Mammoth Ivory? Hold on, the chess board feels strange.

He checks underneath the table and finds nothing. He looks at the board and pauses for one second. He picks up the board and finds a PAPER underneath; it contains a TABLE OF NAMES and a riddle.

After a few seconds of decoding, BOB: Look back. Look back?

He looks back but is met with nothing. He’s unsure of what exactly he’s supposed to see. The camera BEEPS once again. He makes a face of realisation.

END SCENE. Scene 12: Race BOB and ALBERT sprint to reach their CAMERA, eye contact not astray. Intense music is heard. They race to replay the camera’s 23 memory in search of the clue that both of them have been

completely oblivious to. The camera is flipped over and the TIMER is frozen.

BOB (V.O) (defeated) The Titanic. Now, run me my check.

Camera glitches to black.

END SCENE. Scene 13: Ending A BLACK SCREEN IS SHOWN. RADIO NARRATOR You’ve done your duty and have done it well. I ask no more of you, I shall set you free. You know the rule of the sea.

After a few seconds, the screen glitches. We see the recording red dot and the timer as we did in the beginning. One new face appears.

The game begins again.

PERSON Hm? What’s this?

BLACK SCREEN. WE’LL MEET AGAIN by VERA LYNN plays, the audio is slightly distorted. CREDITS. FADE OUT. END.

Mystery, Thriller, Escape, Vintage Setting Description: It is set in the same place for the film's duration, in two separate escape rooms. There is nothing in particular that stands out in the messy rooms at first glance, except for the few items scattered around. The setting must give off a vintage/slightly grunge messy vibe.
