HISTORY GUIDE

Pattaya also known as Fun City is Thailand’s most popular resort only 90 minutes from Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R&R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats and you’ll find many go go bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and the odd ladyboy. Food is another one of the highlights of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. Cajun, Chinese, Indian, Italian, English, French, Vietnamese, German, Russian and more. Today Pattaya attracts annually more then a million tourists from all over the world. Pattaya provides high standard hotels, restaurants, sports, entertainment and shopping. It really has it all and a whole lot more. 8

GETTING AROUND GUIDE

THIS MONTH TAXI FROM BANGKOK TO PATTAYA It doesn’t matter where we come from in the World the chances are that when we first arrive you will fly into Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. This is usually after a long flight and for those travelling onwards to Pattaya the last thing that we want is any problems at the airport. Thankfully, the taxi service that is available from the airport is extremely efficient with a desk arranging taxis on your behalf. The fare is agreed prior to travel and paid directly to the taxi driver. Should you wish to go on the Expressway, which is highly recommended you will pay the toll in addition. Generally, the journey from the airport takes 90 minutes depending on the traffic. The price will again vary depending on where you are staying but between 1,200 to 1,500 THB would be reasonable. The journey will take you straight out of Bangkok and you will get to see limited parts of the local countryside in the outlying areas of Bangkok and close to Chonburi. Obviously some people will choose to stay in the capital Bangkok first and the then travel down to Pattaya. Most people to tend to stay in the Sukhumvit area or Silom area of the capital. Assuming that you are staying in a hotel, the hotels will easily be able to find you a suitable taxi service to take you down to Bangkok. The rates charged will be very similar to that charged from the airport. Should you be looking to simply flag down a taxi on the street don’t be surprised if the first couple of attempts fail with the driver refusing to take you. This is not personal but they feel they can earn more money working locally. Most taxis have a guide price attached to the back of the driver’s seat but they are likely to want to agree a price before commencing the journey.

SHOPPING GUIDE

Pattaya has numerous large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but do not expect to find variety as most shops are selling the same things. Pattaya actually has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok for variety and volume of shops but it is trying with several new shopping centres opening in recent years, and there’s more to come.

Bargaining is a way of life here but don’t worry if you don’t know your Thai numbers as most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. As a general rule what ever their first price is, half it and you will be closer to what they are actually willing to sell the item for. If you are not happy then simply walk away as the shop keeper down the street will be selling the same thing. Try to have some fun when bargaining because if the shop keeper likes you they may give you a better price and never get aggressive, it doesn’t pay.

TELEVISION GUIDE

Sometimes the hectic life of Pattaya takes its toll and we just want to sit back, relax and watch some TV. Deciding what to watch can be a bit of challenge! The options for watching our favourite shows have improved a great deal in recent years and we are no longer stuck with the local cable offering old movies, English speaking news channels and dreadfully produced local TV. Faster internet speed now mean that we can access pretty much all our favourite shows from around the world. Here we give you a brief lowdown on the free and paid streaming options that are available. FREE STREAMING Free streaming is available to everyone who has a laptop, mobile device, smart TV, Chromecast or media box. This is great for accessing literally thousands of options but it’s heavily reliant on fast internet connections. If you don’t have this, sadly the free-option may not quite cut the mustard. PAY TV SERVICES True TV is one of the most expensive but best options for movies and sports fans and is available via cable, satellite or internet.Netflix offers an excellent selection of international TV shows and movies. The selection of children’s programmes is a fantastic way to keep the young ones happy and quiet! Once again it is available across a range of devices making it ideal for families. Amazon Prime is perhaps a superior version of Netflix and offers plenty of content that isn’t available from other sources. Prime works well when streamed across multiple devices. Minix boxes, Chromecast and Apple TV offer an excellent selection of free and paid content. For a more in-depth guide please visit tv.pattaya.guide 22

ISLAND GUIDE

Sometimes we feel like we need to get away from the hustle and bustle of Pattaya and there are several islands nearby that are perfect for just that. KOH LARN Koh Larn is the closest island to Pattaya and is just a 45-minute ferry crossing from Bali Hai Pier. The island has several sandy beaches lapped by clear, azure waters with the most popular being Tawaen Beach and Samae Beach. Accommodation on the island varies from basic chalets to upmarket resorts. The Phonpenyom Restaurant offers excellent seafood and the Klom Klom bar is modern bar offering music and pool. Transportation on the island is via Songtaew or it is possible to hire motorbikes. KOH SAMET Koh Samet can be reached by ferry leaving from Ban Phe Pier which is around an hour’s drive from Pattaya. Samet has some of the best beaches in the region and the island has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife and water sports. Accommodation ranges from small beachfront bungalows to luxury villas. Ban Ploi restaurant is a floating restaurant close by that is renowned for its seafood and other popular Thai dishes. Transportation is generally either by speedboat or Songtaew although motorbikes can be rented. KOH CHANG Koh Chang is around 4 hour’s drive away from Pattaya and is possibly the best-preserved tourist destination in Thailand. Comprising of 70% rainforest, the island has an abundance of sandy coves, beaches and wildlife. Koh Chang has a lively nightlife and excellent restaurants. BUSINESS REVIEW

UVclean.asia launched their unique mattress cleaning business in April and we discover what’s happened since. Over the last three months, UVclean.asia have been busy helping new customers understand the benefits of their unique cleaning system compared to a regular surface clean with chemicals. Customers who had their mattresses cleaned with UVclean custom equipment are often shocked after they see what comes out from the bed mattress, and have noticed improved sleep and health. Then they share with their friends and family what the process is about which leads to more enquiries where we have taken on more staff. WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? UVclean.asia use a new generation of Germicidal Ultra Violet Lights (GUVL) sanitising machines, which provides human safe, broad spectrum, long term, eco friendly microbial control and mattress sanitisation protection. THAI WESTERN RELATIONSHIPS

For many western males visiting Thailand for the first time, the sheer abundance of beautiful women can be overwhelming. While the country itself weaves its undeniable magic on the individual, a large number are tempted to try to actually live and work here, hopefully find the girl of their dreams and settle down. Generally these men, upon returning home find the idea takes a stronger hold in their mind and the idea of having an exotic, oriental wife becomes ever more appealing, and many choose to act on this life-changing decision, leaving behind their family and friends and the relative safety of their job for a life of adventure and new experiences in a tropical country. For those that are considering such a momentous decision, there are many things to bear in mind, especially concerning the potential culture shock that they may experience when moving here. With regard to relationships, some men return here to follow up on a brief encounter they have had with a girl they met in a bar. It really is common sense that if you are looking for romance a ‘girly bar’ is not really the best place to look. Though it is true that many western men have met and settled down (generally quite happily) with a bar girl they are far outnumbered by those who have had their hearts and bank accounts broken, tricked into buying property or businesses for their ‘adoring’ partner and family, only to find out that she has a Thai husband in Issan that they have been unwittingly supporting, to economic hardship, especially girls from the vast Issan region. It is a situation that the Thai government is earnestly trying to tackle, but when a girl can make as much money in one night than in a month toiling under a scorching sun in the rice fields for a month, the temptation remains. 30

PATTAYA.GUIDE Feature

It is easy to understand why a tourist would follow this route. A bar girl is generally one of the first encounters many western men have with a Thai woman and they latch on to the first pretty face they meet. As mentioned, these relationships can sometimes work out happily, but it is important to remember that these girls inevitably have some ‘baggage’ attached and that the old cliché of ‘you can take the girl out of the bar but you can’t take the bar out of the girl is too often true. It is important to approach the situation with your eyes wide open. A far more rewarding relationship is possible with a Thai woman that has a ‘normal’ job, such as an office worker, hotel employee and so on. They are generally receptive to a sincere approach from a western male and appreciate being treated with respect and kindness. They have a great deal to offer in return. Contrary to what many westerners perceive, Thai women are not meek, subservient partners. As the country has undergone massive economic development, they have grown in confidence concerning both themselves and in their abilities. There are far more women in Thailand running major businesses, in government positions and executives than in the West. For example, how many female bank managers have you encounter in the UK or the US? In Thailand, it is commonplace. In other cases, the girl has many foreign ‘boyfriends’ that stay with her when they visit Thailand and act as her sponsors sending her money regularly so that she doesn’t have to work in the bar, each unaware of the others. This should really come as no surprise, as after all this is essentially her business and she needs to make as much money as possible while her looks last to support herself and her family.

Feature PATTAYA.GUIDE 31

WHAT DOES A THAI WOMAN LOOK FOR IN A PARTNER? Much like their western counterparts they appreciate a man of sincerity, financial security, responsibility and faithfulness (an area in which some Thai men are perceived to be lacking). A relationship with a Thai woman would generally start with perhaps a dinner date, where she will probably have a chaperone, either a friend or family member. Thai women are still expected to remain a virgin until they are married, so the partnership takes time and trust must be gained. One very important point to bear in mind is that showing physical affection in public, especially kissing, is frowned upon in Thai society and attempting this will greatly embarrass your Thai girlfriend. Another difference that you will encounter is that there will be considerably more interaction with her family than you would expect in a western relationship. Thai families are very close and elderly parents often live with their children. An important aspect for your partner is that you show respect to her parents. Generally speaking when socializing with her family or friends you will be expected to pay for restaurant bills, entertainment etc. (unless there is a person of ‘higher status’ present) Thais dislike stinginess and it is regarded almost as a duty for someone with money to provide (especially concerning food) for those with little.

32

PATTAYA.GUIDE Feature

When the relationship enters a more ‘serious’ stage and marriage is contemplated, there are other things to bear in mind. helping to provide for her parents material well-being is very important for a Thai woman. This can also extend to her brothers and sisters. There is a definite fine line to be drawn between being generous and helpful to her family members which will make her happy, and being over generous which can further extend the family circle seeking assistance, placing her in a potentially difficult situation. THE DOWRY OR SOI SOT One main clash between Thai vs Western culture concerns the payment of a dowry, known in Thai as Soi Sot. The concept was originally adopted from China and is now embedded in Thai custom. Refusing to pay Soi Sot outright will cause huge embarrassment to your partner, being seen as a rejection of Thai culture and could give a bad impression of you to her family and friends. For Thais, the dowry demonstrates to the bride’s parents that their son-in-law has the financial security for their daughter and has a serious commitment to the marriage. In some cases, the dowry is returned to the couple as they commence their married life. The emergence of Thai-Western relationships is apparent everywhere in modern Thailand. Many of Thailand’s top TV stars, singers and models are ‘Luk Krung’ which means half-Thai. Article written by Mark Verrall Feature PATTAYA.GUIDE 33

HEALTH & FITNESS GUIDE

A healthy lifestyle can be achieved anywhere in the world and Pattaya is certainly one of the most popular places people choose to stay fit and in shape. Thailand has a tropical climate and is therefore ideal for the pursuit of outdoor activities: volleyball, soccer, sailing plus many more. However, for and in indoor healthy lifestyle, Pattaya is also among the best and the vast number of 5 star health massage organisations, beauty parlours, plastic surgery clinics, spas and fitness centre mean that Pattaya really is the place to improve your overall health and look. Many people now choose to partake of the various treatments from facials, to waxing and detox to botox in order to gain that healthier looking body and due to the current price of treatments in many western countries, Thailand has found itself an entire new market in patients arriving for plastic surgery treatment and general medical operations which in their own country would cost much more than locally in Thailand.

BUSINESS SERVICES GUIDE

Thai Business Help established since March 2010, has been helping hundreds of expats and tourists from around the world with all types of business services including visa applications, extensions and renewals. Respected for offering the best advice when setting up a business in Pattaya, they are renowned for the best value too, just look at their prices. Not only that, they are well known and trusted within the expat community. All too often, we hear of horror stories of customers who have chosen business service providers who deliberately offer poor advice so they can charge more, high rates and hidden costs, and worse of all, a slow service that takes months. This type of treatment reflects badly on the industry and has a negative impact in the growth of Pattaya as a leading tourist destination. We have collated industry average prices you should expect to pay ANNUAL AUDIT Should take no more than 2 weeks to complete. Non-trading company: 12,000 THB Trading company 2m: 15-18,000 THB COMPANY SETUP Should take no more than 3 days to setup. Registered 1m capital: 13-15,000 THB Registered 2m capital: 18-20,000 THB For further advice, we recommend Thai Business Help.

INSURANCE GUIDE

Insurance is an essential item when in Thailand, where all types of accidents happen daily. Whether you’re an expat or holidaymaker, you cannot ignore the importance of been well insured for all types of risk. From health & medical, to personal accident, to travel. In Thailand, a trip to the hospital costs money and you better have deep pockets if you’re not insured. A serious accident can cost hundreds of thousands of baht, and if you don’t have the money you’ll be sent to the nearest government hospital, where treatment is a life or death situation. You may own property over here, or a car or motorbike. Theft is a growing problem in Pattaya, and you want to ensure if the worst happens, you’ll be reimbursed quickly and fully. No insurance and your at the mercy of the local police catching the thieves, and hope that your items are not pawned. You maybe a restaurant owner, one of your staff accidentally spills hot soup on your customer. Your responsible, do you have liability cover? For a stress free future, been fully covered will save you lots of money, and ensure you and your families own peace of mind. We recommend using a reputable insurance broker who deals with multiple insurance underwriters, this will save you a great deal of time as they are experienced in meeting your needs within your budget. So if your worried you don’t have any insurance, you have the opportunity now to arrange insurance to cover you and your family. We recommend A1cover.com an insurance broker that is connected to over 20 registered insurance companies in Thailand. For more information email info@A1cover.com or visit A1cover.com

PROPERTY GUIDE

Pattaya is a beach resort with city status, with something for everyone. Year round tropical climate, there are hospitals, schools, shopping malls and supermarkets. Add in the low cost of living in Pattaya, the friendliness, warmth and hospitality of the Thai people, and this makes Pattaya City an extremely popular choice for a secondary home or retirement The last decade has seen a massive growth in the number of people, particularly from the West, investing in property overseas. Some buy principally as an investment, while others buy a holiday home; and some a permanent residence, having taken the decision to emigrate. Pattaya has become a very popular choice

When it comes to purchasing a property, there is a massive variety of houses and condominiums, in terms of size, price and quality, to choose between, which, in general terms, represent outstanding value for money, particularly when compared to the cost of real estate in the Western world. There are some major difference when buying property in Thailand so it is advisable to take advice from a knowledgeable and trustworthy real estate broker 72
