Editoriale _ Dal trekking in città al trekking nella storia Avete una giornata, o anche solo mezza, di tempo libero tra un visita e l’altra al patrimonio artistico di Bergamo e della Bergamasca? Bergamo è la città ideale per compiere sport, o anche solo per una bella escursione rilassante scoprendo al tempo stesso il suo volto meno noto. Il luogo ideale è la grande fascia di verde dei colli alle spalle di Bergamo, in un ambiente lontano dai rumori del traffico e dove la città quasi scompare. Sui colli ci sono antiche strade, viottoli e sentieri dove ci si può muovere in piena libertà ammirando splendidi panorami. Per i piÚ esigenti c’è una bella pista ciclabile, che si può percorrere anche a piedi, lunga diversi chilometri e che si snoda nel Parco dei Colli di Bergamo. In piÚ Bergamo è punto di partenza di invitanti piste ciclabili, tra cui quelle delle Valli Seriana e Brembana. Soprattutto queste ultime, per la bellezza e la varietà degli ambienti sono proprio da raccomandare. E a proposito della Valle Brembana chi desidera visitare luoghi di grande suggestione, dove ad ogni passo ci si imbatte nella storia, consigliamo di visitare i borghi medievali di Oneta e Cornello dei Tasso.

Una tradizione popolare vuole che la celebre maschera di Arlecchino sia nata proprio a Oneta prima di approdare alla Commedia dell’Arte. Cornello, dove il tempo sembra si sia fermato, è invece la patria dei corrieri postali dai quali hanno avuto origine le poste moderne.

From hiking in the city to hiking through history Do you have a day, or even half, of free time between one visit and another to Bergamo’s artistic heritage? Bergamo is the ideal city for playing sport, but also for going on a relaxing walk, discovering its lesser-known parts at the same time.

The ideal location is the large strip of green hills behind Bergamo, a location that is far from the noise of the traffic and where the city almost disappears. On the hills, there are ancient paths, roads and trails where you can walk freely, admiring the wonderful scenery. For the keener, there is a beautiful cycle path that can also be covered on foot, which is several kilometres long and runs through the “Parco dei Colli� (Hills Park) of Bergamo. In addition, Bergamo is the starting point for many interesting cycle trails, including those that run through the valleys of Seriana and Brembana, which are known for their beauty and diverse landscapes. And speaking of the Brembana Valley, if you want to visit places of great beauty, taking in a piece of history with each step, we recommend a visit to the medieval villages of Oneta and Cornello dei Tasso. A popular tradition has it that the masked character of Harlequin was born in Oneta before joining the “Commedia dell’Arte�. Cornello, where time seems to stand still, however, is the home of the mail couriers from which the modern-day post office was born.

n autunno sui colli di Bergamo si svolge una manifestazione chiamata “Mille gradini”. Non si tratta di una gara vera e propria, bensì di una bella camminata aperta a tutti. C’è anche chi sceglie di farla a passo molto veloce o di corsa ma l’importante, come diceva de Coubertin, è partecipare. E in realtà da poche centinaia di bergamaschi che sfidavano la “Mille gradini”, si è superato il migliaio e più. A dir la verità i gradini sono molti di più di mille: quasi duemila e, se si vuole, ce ne sono a disposizione in gran quantità. Si tratta infatti dei viottoli in salita, o scalette, di cui è disseminata la bella fascia collinare che si estende oltre Bergamo alta.

L’ambiente è di grande suggestione. I colli sono immersi nel verde e, percorrendoli, ci si imbatte in orti e in pendii ben coltivati, ma ci sono anche molti giardini.

Un tempo le scalette erano utilizzate dai contadini e dagli ortolani per spostarsi, adesso sono percorse da cittadini che desiderano compiere una piacevole passeggiata tra vedute panoramiche che cambiano in continuazione, o fare jogging per tenersi allenati oltre che da turisti alla scoperta di una parte della città del tutto sconosciuta.

Al viaggiatore che anche durante la visita alla città vuole fare un po’ di sport e ha qualche ora a disposizione consigliamo proprio l’ambiente dei colli. Anzi, una di queste scalette incomincia proprio a lato della stazione della funicolare, sul viale Vittorio

D

uring autumn, an event called “Mille gradini” (a thousand steps) is held on the hills of Bergamo. This is not a real race, but a delightful walk that is open to all. Some people choose to take it at a fast pace or run it, but the important thing, as de Courbetin put it, is taking part. In fact, the few hundred local residents who undertake the “Mille gradini” have now turned into more than a thousand.

The truth is that there are a lot more than a thousand steps - almost two thousand, in fact - and if you like there are even more available by way of uphill paths and flights of steps dotted around the beautiful hills that extend beyond Bergamo.

The environment is extremely charming. The hills are surrounded by green countryside and along the way you’ll come across not only vegetable plots and wellcultivated terraces, but also gardens. The flights of steps were once used by farmers and gardeners to move around, but today they are crossed by residents who enjoy taking leisurely strolls through ever-changing countryside or joggers wishing to stay fit, as well as tourists who want to discover a completely unknown part of the city.

If, during a visit to the city, you wish to take a bit of exercise and have a few hours to spare, we recommend that heading for the hills. One of the flights of steps starts right alongside the funicular station of Viale Vittorio Emanuelle II and isn’t too

Ci si innalza rapidamente nel verde e il traffico è subito dimenticato. All’arrivo la scaletta offre belle vedute lungo la spettacolare barriera delle mura venete e anche verso la città al piano. Raggiungiamo la scenografica Porta San Giacomo, costruita in candido marmo, superiamola e andiamo verso sinistra percorrendo gli spalti ammirando al tempo stesso il panorama.

Questo versante della collina è percorso da alcune scalette che partono ancora dal piano: non è difficile individuarle. Alla fine di questo tratto degli spalti si raggiunge Colle Aperto e la Porta di Sant’Alessandro, oltre la quale non c’è che l’imbarazzo della scelta.

Si procede per via Torni per arrivare, dopo una breve passeggiata, a un punto dove ci si imbatte in due scalette: quella a sinistra, dello Scorlazzino, scende per un bel po’ di gradini fino ad incrociare via San Martino da

Once at the top, there are beautiful views of the spectacular Venetian walls and the city towards the plain. On reaching spectacular Porta San Giacomo, a gate built of white marble, continue on and turn left, following the walls and admiring the view at the same time.

This side of the hill is crossed by several flights of steps that also start from the plain, which are not hard to spot. At the end of this section you reach Colle Aperto and Porta di Sant’Alessandro, beyond which you are spoilt for choice with regard to trails. Continue along Via Torni, after a brief walk you arrive at two flights of steps: on the left, the Scorlazzino, descends towards Via San Martino from where, continuing towards the left and along Via Borgo Canale, you return to the

Again, from Porta San Lorenzo towards Via dei Torni, you can take a road that is a lot steeper; the goal is again the peak of the same hill. From San Vigilio (don’t forget a visit to the castle at the summit), the opportunities for hiking are numerous. It is possible to do some urban hiking, reaching, after several ascents and descents and even crossing a forest, the sanctuary of Sombreno, located in the far-western corner of the hill range.

chilometri con inizio in via Baioni. Il primo tratto è accompagnato da belle vedute verso le mura, dal baluardo di Sant’Agostino fin oltre quello di San Lorenzo. Poi ci si discosta un po’ dalla città, tra orti e prati si costeggia la base della collina in un ambiente che cambia di continuo e che non è molto guastato dalla periferia cittadina.

Si entra quindi nel verde fitto, si può ammirare la bellissima valletta di Valmarina con l’antico monastero ora sede del Parco dei Colli di Bergamo, si attraversano tratti di bosco, ci si cimenta in un percorso molto vario che alterna tratti in piano e saliscendi, con meta ultima ancora il Santuario di Sombreno.

key info UNA CURIOSITà/A CURIOSITY Se visitate il Santuario di Sombreno noterete al suo interno l’ ‘osso di Sombreno’, quasi sicuramente una costola di animale (sembra di mammut), appeso al soffitto della chiesa, lungo circa 1,80 metri. La leggenda narra di un pericoloso drago che seminava terrore nelle aree circostanti, fino a quando un giovane e coraggioso cavaliere affrontò e finalmente uccise l’enorme bestia.

La fece a pezzi e donò alcune parti alle diocesi locali: una di queste finì appunto nel Santuario di Sombreno.

If you visit the Sanctuary of Sombreno, you’ll find the “bone of Sombreno” hanging on the ceiling of the church, which is approximately 1.80 metres long and almost certainly the rib of an animal (it looks like a mammoth). Legend has it that a dangerous dragon caused terror in the surrounding area until a young and bold knight confronted and finally killed the enormous beast.

He cut the animal into pieces and gave some to local communities: one of these ended up in the Sanctuary of Sombreno.

L’IDEA SPORTIVA/AN IDEA FOR SPORT Se amate le due ruote, Bergamo è il punto di partenza per due splendide piste ciclabili, da percorrere in mountain bike.

Entrambe sono state tracciate sui sedimi di due ferrovie dismesse: della Valle Brembana e della Valle Seriana. Il primo percorso inizia a Zogno e sale, tra tratti in galleria e vedute spettacolari sui meandri del fiume Brembo, fino a Piazza Brembana; l’altro, dalla periferia di Bergamo si snoda, salendo dolcemente, in un ambiente molto vario. L’ultimo tratto, ma relativamente breve, è più impegnativo e consente di raggiungere Clusone. Altre piste ciclabili vanno invece verso la pianura collegando, attraverso la campagna ben coltivata, centri storici e castelli. Le montagne, infine, mettono a disposizione una rete di sentieri con un gran numero di itinerari, dai più semplici ai più impegnativi, con grandi possibilità di scelta.

If you love cycling, Bergamo is the starting point for two wonderful cycle paths to follow in mountain bike. Both have been created on two old railway lines in the Brembana Valley and the Seriana Valley. The first starts in Zogno and climbs, passing through tunnels and with spectacular views over the meanders of the Brembo River, to Piazza Brembana; the other winds from the outskirts of Bergamo, climbing gently through a very varied landscape. The last and relatively short section is more challenging and leads to Clusone. Other cycle paths, instead, pass through the plain, winding across farmland and connecting towns and castles. The mountains, finally, offer a network of paths and varied choice of itineraries, from the simplest to the more challenging.

’è un borgo in Valle Brembana che detiene un invidiabile primato: è l’unico tra tutti i borghi della Bergamasca che non ha mai visto un’auto. Non in virtù di particolari divieti, bensì perché con l’auto è proprio impossibile arrivarci. Si tratta di Cornello dei Tasso, che può vantare anche di essere il borgo medievale meglio preservato di tutta la Lombardia. Lo consigliamo. è un luogo ricco di storia, con un importante passato ed è magnificamente conservato. Per queste sue caratteristiche è classificato tra i borghi più belli d’Italia.

A Cornello ci si può arrivare in due modi. Si percorre la strada della Valle Brembana e, pochi chilometri oltre San Giovanni Bianco (il cui centro storico meriterebbe proprio una visita), si incontra la segnalazione per Cornello. Si sale velocemente e, sempre seguendo le segnalazioni, si arriva a un’area di sosta. Da qui un comodo viottolo conduce alla nostra meta. Noi vi proponiamo invece un altro percorso molto suggestivo, facendo prima tappa in un luogo veramente singolare. Subito fuori dal centro di San Giovanni Bianco, sempre percorrendo la strada di valle, si devia a sinistra per la Val Taleggio; poco oltre, una indicazione a destra consente di raggiungere dopo pochi chilometri il borgo di Oneta. Qui, in un bel contesto medievale, c’è un edificio quattrocentesco ben conservato dove la tradizione popolare vuole sia nato il personaggio di Arlecchino che, una volta approdato a Venezia, divenne la straordinaria maschera della Commedia dell’Arte.

here’s a village in the Brembana Valley that holds an enviable record: it’s the only one of all Bergamask villages to have never seen a car. Not because it has been prohibited, but because it is simply impossible to reach it by driving.

Cornello dei Tasso can also boast being the best preserved medieval town in Lombardy. We recommend a visit. Because of these characteristics it is ranked one of “the most beautiful villages in Italy”.

Cornello can be reached in two ways: driving along the Brembana Valley road where, a few miles past San Giovanni Bianco (whose historical centre also deserves a visit), you come across the signs for Cornello. Ascending quickly, following the signs, you arrive at a parking area. From here a pathway leads you to your destination.

We suggest, however, taking another picturesque route, making a first stop in a truly charming place. Just outside the centre of San Giovanni Bianco, again following the road but turning left towards Val Taleggio, a sign on the right indicates the village of Oneta a few miles ahead. Here, in a beautiful medieval context, is a well-preserved fifteenth-century building that, according to legend, is the birthplace of Harlequin who, after arriving in Venice, became the extraordinary masked character of the “Commedia d’Arte”.

The building belonged to a wealthy, upper class family, as revealed by the interesting frescoes that depict battles between knights and other scenes on the walls of a room on the ground floor. To the side of the main entrance, there is a fresco that depicts

a character wielding a large stick in a menacing way. This is perhaps a reference to the “homo salvadego”, a mysterious woodsman which appears in the traditions of the mountain people and is often depicted in areas in the Alps.

The village of Oneta is currently is the process of being restored. Numerous references to the celebrated masked character can be found here, linked to the mountain people of the Brembana Valley who for centuries lived in Venice, carrying out all kind of work: in the ports and homes of noblemen and great merchants as potters, servants, dishwashers and waiters, which may have given rise to the typical stereotypes that were then transformed into masked characters for the stage in the Venetian

servitori, sguatteri, camerieri; presenze tuttofare che possono aver dato origine a personaggi caratteristici tramutati poi in maschera sul gran palcoscenico delle calli e dei campielli veneziani. è stato realizzato un museo e negli ambienti sottostanti la “casa di Arlecchino” una taverna offre piatti tipici. Ma quella di Oneta è solo una tappa. Questa località si trovava lungo la medievale “Via Mercatorum”, strada dei mercanti, che da Bergamo risaliva la Valle Brembana per poi scendere in Valtellina. L’itinerario, percorso secoli or sono da carovane di cavalli e muli, passava anche per Cornello dei Tasso. E allora caliamoci nei panni dei mercanti medievali e seguiamo lo stesso tracciato, che è rimasto immutato nel tempo. è una bella passeggiata che si snoda nel verde, tra prati e macchie di fitto bosco. Un paio di chilometri in tutto, ricchi di riferimenti storici, con angoli molto suggestivi: un ponticello, una chiesetta, un paio di vallette che invitano alla sosta mentre immaginiamo di veder passare oltre a mercanti e viandanti,

This village was found along the “Via Mercatorum”, the merchant’s road that from Bergamo led to the Brembana Valley and then descended to Valtellina. The route, travelled by caravans pulled by horses and mules, also passed through Cornello dei Tasso. Let us walk in the footsteps of the medieval merchants and follow the same path, which has been unchanged by time. It is a beautiful route that winds through green valleys, meadows and patches of dense forest. It is a couple of kilometres in total, full of historical references, with very charming landmarks: a bridge, a church, a couple of valleys that invite you to stop whilst you imagine passing merchants, travellers, couriers and ambassadors on their journeys.

Le sue case si notano in alto, su uno sperone di roccia che domina il corso del fiume Brembo. All’ingresso del minuscolo paese, sulla destra, spiccano i ruderi di un edificio che doveva essere di notevoli dimensioni. è tutto quello che resta della dimora della famiglia dei Tasso, i cui discendenti si diffusero in tutta Europa. I Tasso divennero famosi come corrieri postali istituendo la Compagnia dei corrieri al servizio di Venezia, quindi dei Papi e di quanti volevano affidare loro il trasporto della corrispondenza. La loro fortuna, in particolare, è legata all’imperatore Massimiliano I che li incaricò di organizzare il trasporto della corrispondenza per conto del Sacro Romano Impero esteso su buona parte dell’Europa. Si può dire che questa famiglia, che vanta anche grandi letterati, tra cui il poeta Torquato autore del celebre poema “La Gerusalemme liberata”, sia all’origine del moderno servizio postale. Nel borgo è visitabile il Museo dei Tasso e della Storia Postale, dove sono ricostruite le vicende della famiglia dei Tasso, dei servizio dei corrieri e della nascita delle poste, con esposti documenti

The houses can be seen high up on a rocky outcrop that overlooks the flow of the Brembo River. At the entrance of the hamlet, on the right, stand the ruins of a building that used to be substantial in size. This is all that remains of the Tasso family’s residence, whose descendants are now spread across Europe. The Tasso family became famous as mail carriers by establishing the Compagnia dei Corrieri (Courier Company) for the Venetian Republic, for the Popes who entrusted them with transporting their mail. Their fortune is tied in particular to Emperor Maximilian I, who commissioned them to arrange the transportation of mail of behalf of the Holy Roman Empire, which extended over much of Europe. It can be said that this family, which also boasts great writers, including the poet Torquato, author the famous poem “Jerusalem Delivered”, is responsible for the foundation of the modern postal service.

The village is home to the Tasso and Postal Service Museum, where the events of the Tasso family, the courier service and the birth of the postal service are recreated.

e numerosi cimeli. Tra angoli suggestivi e antichi edifici la strada conduce direttamente alla via porticata sotto i cui grandi archi trovavano riparo le carovane e i mercanti. In alto, separata da tutto il contesto, spicca la chiesa dedicata ai Santi Cornelio e Cipriano, sormontata da un bel campanile Romanico leggermente pendente. All’interno le pareti sono coperte da pregevoli affreschi dei XV e del XVI secolo.

Dopo questa piacevole giornata, la strada del ritorno, che riconduce al borgo di Oneta, è ancora quella d’andata: semplice e comoda.

Among charming corners and ancient buildings, the street leads directly to a porticoed road where the caravans and merchants found shelter under the arches. At the top of the road, in a separate location, sits the church dedicated to the Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, which is topped by a beautiful Romanesque bell tower that leans slightly. Inside, the walls are covered in frescoes dating back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. After this pleasant day, the way back through Oneta is easy and convenient.

Se si vuole raggiungere Cornello dei Tasso da Oneta occorre prendere l’autobus da Bergamo per San Giovanni Bianco. Si raggiunge poi Oneta a piedi in circa 15 minuti.

Camerata Cornello is connected to Bergamo by frequent buses leaving from the bus station (every half hour approximately, travel time one hour). If you wish to reach Cornello dei Tasso via Oneta, take the bus from Bergamo to San Giovanni Bianco. You can reach Oneta on foot in approximately 15 minutes.

L’IDEA IN PIù/ANOTHER IDEA A completamento della giornata merita una visita anche il borgo di Bretto, poco a monte di quello più noto di Cornello. Una comoda mulattiera porta lassù in circa mezz’ora di cammino. A Bretto Basso un antico palazzo era una residenza dei Tasso: sulla facciata spicca un affresco con lo stemma del casato, affiancato dal leone alato e da una Madonna col Bambino. Poco sopra, la chiesetta di San Ludovico di Tolosa è un autentico gioiello con uno straordinario ciclo di affreschi all’interno; sulla parete esterna uno stemma con due tassi e un’aquila, dove è condensata la secolare, straordinaria vicenda della famiglia dei Tasso.

At the end of your day, a visit to the village of Bretto is well worth while. This village is only a half hour walk from better known Cornello up the hill along a mule path. Lower Bretto features an old building that was a Tasso residence. You’ll be able to make out a fresco on its façade depicting the crest of the family, flanked by a winged lion and a Madonna with Child. A little further ahead, the small church of San Ludovico di Tolosa is an absolute gem housing an extraordinary cycle of frescoes; the external wall has a crest with two badgers and an eagle and condenses the time-honoured and extraordinary events of the Tasso family.

ome per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.

In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il Palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista.

Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta.

I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.

Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, Via San Tomaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Accademia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utilizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

orta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demolished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.

Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone.

The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias.

Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

iazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di Via GombitoVia Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.

Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla Torre Civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo.

Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

iazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town.

Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval.

Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise Contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century.

Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter.

Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.
