Editoriale _ L’aeroporto dedicato al Caravaggio, lo straordinario artista i cui dipinti sono punto di riferimento dei flussi di visitatori nei musei e alle mostre, è il simbolo dell’importante ruolo che Bergamo svolge su tutto il territorio lombardo. Per secoli la città è stata al centro dei traffici e dei commerci nella vasta fascia di pianura che precede le Alpi. Estrema roccaforte del dominio di Venezia sulla terraferma, vi affluivano le merci provenienti dal grande porto sull’Adriatico e che da Bergamo venivano fatte proseguire per Milano o, seguendo il solco dell’Adda e della Valtellina, verso il centro Europa. Una funzione mercantile che si sviluppò ancora di piÚ nell’Ottocento per trovare conferma quando venne costruita l’autostrada Bergamo-Milano (la seconda in Italia), il vitale asse che attraversa tutta l’Italia settentrionale da est ad ovest collegando una miriade di industrie e di aree artigianali. L’aeroporto è l’evoluzione di questa lunga storia, oggi singolarmente rappresentata dal cuore della città : il Sentierone, uno spazio scenografico divenuto luogo d’incontro tradizionale dei bergamaschi, ma che ospitò uno dei piÚ antichi mercati europei. Passeggiarci è anche un modo per approfondire la conoscenza di Bergamo e del suo territorio.

The airport dedicated to Caravaggio, the extraordinary artist whose paintings are a point of reference for visitors to local museums and exhibitions, is a symbol of the important role that Bergamo plays throughout Lombardy. For centuries the city has been at the centre of trade and commerce in the vast stretch of plain that lies before the Alps. As the furthermost fortress of Venice’s dominium on dry land, goods coming from the great port on the Adriatic passed through this area on their way to Milan or along the valley of the Adda and Valtellina to central Europe. A trading function that developed further in the nineteenth century and became established when the Bergamo-Milan motorway (the second in Italy) was constructed.

This vital thoroughfare crosses northern Italy from east to west connecting an array of industrial firms and manufacturing areas. The airport is the evolution of this long story, which is today uniquely represented by the heart of the city: the Sentierone, a spectacular corner that has become the traditional meeting place of local people but which held once one of the oldest markets in Europe. A stroll along this street is also a good way to discover more about Bergamo and its province.

Profumata, morbida e dal colore inconfondibile, la polenta è un classico della tradizione gastronomica bergamasca. Formata da un impasto di acqua, farina e mais macinati a pietra e cotti in un paiolo di rame a fuoco lento, la polenta viene generalmente servita su un’asse a forma circolare, dove sprigiona il suo inconfondibile aroma. Bergamo e Provincia considerano la polenta una propria creatura, tanto da avere creato anche una versione dolce del piatto, la “Polenta e Osei”, fiore all’occhiello delle pasticcerie cittadine.

Fragrant, soft and with an unmistakeable colour, polenta is the classic dish of gastronomic tradition in Bergamo. Mad of water and stone-ground maize flour and cooked in copper pots on a slow flame, polenta is generally served on a circular wooden board, from where its unmistakeable aroma emanates. Bergamo and its province consider polenta to be their own creation to the extent that even a sweet version of the dish has been created: “Polenta e Osei” (Polenta and Birds), the crowning glory of the city’s patisseries.

Curiosità_Curious facts La leggenda popolare narra che anche i colori della bandiera della Provincia di Bergamo siano stati scelti per celebrare questo amato piatto della tradizione contadina: il giallo dorato dello stendardo, infatti, sarebbe un omaggio alla polenta, mentre il rosso rubino che lo affianca sarebbe un riferimento al colore del vino, che per tradizione accompagna questo piatto.

Leggenda o no, ciò che sappiamo con certezza è che i bergamaschi sono tanto amanti e orgogliosi del loro piatto tipico, da essere soprannominati in tutta Italia “polentoni”.

Local legend states that even the colours of the flag of Bergamo Province were chosen to celebrate this beloved peasant dish: the golden yellow of the flag is, in fact, a homage to polenta, while the ruby red colour alongside is a reference to wine, which traditionally accompanies this dish. Whether or not this is true, what we know for certain is that the people of Bergamo love and are very proud of their typical dish and as a result are given the nickname of “polentoni” throughout Italy.

ì, è bello passeggiare per Bergamo. Per i classici “quattro passi” ci sono varie opportunità: o attraverso la città antica, e non è facile sottrarsi al fascino di piazza Vecchia dove concludere la passeggiata ai tavolini di uno dei bar all’ombra del Campanone, la quasi millenaria torre civica, oppure lungo i baluardi delle Mura godendosi il panorama verso la pianura e la montagna.

O anche percorrendo lo straordinario spazio urbano che si trova proprio nel centro della Bergamo moderna e che offre bellissimi scorci verso la Bergamo sul colle. I bergamaschi chiamano questo spazio “Sentierone”, che si presenta come un grande rettangolo con orientamento est-ovest, contornato lungo un lato da portici.

Date le dimensioni e la funzione, il Sentierone potrebbe essere considerato come una piazza, la più estesa a Bergamo, ma non è così. La sua remotissima origine è quella di uno spazio compreso tra i due maggiori borghi, di San Leonardo e di Sant’Antonio, per secoli le principali vie d’accesso a Città Alta e quindi luoghi di transito e di commercio, con depositi di merci e di magazzini. Una volta all’anno, in coincidenza con la festa di Sant’Alessandro, patrono di Bergamo, su questo spazio si teneva un mercato che la tradizione vuole risalga a prima dell’anno Mille. Vi confluivano mercanti da tutta l’Italia e anche da oltre le Alpi, dall’Austria, dalla Germania, dai Cantoni svizzeri, dalla Francia. es, it is wonderful to walk through Bergamo. There are various “classic” walks to try, either across the old city – and it’s not easy to pull yourself away from the charm of Piazza Vecchia where you can end your walk at the tables of one of the bars in the shadow of the Campanone, a bell tower almost one thousand years old – along the ramparts of the Walls enjoying the view towards the plain and the mountains, or even by strolling through the extraordinary urban area right in the centre of modern Bergamo, which offers wonderful vistas of the hilltop town. The Bergamask people call this large rectangle facing east-west and bordered along one side by porticoes the “Sentierone”.

Given its size and function, the Sentierone could be considered a square, the largest in Bergamo, although this is not the case. In ancient times it was an open space between the two largest “borghi” (villages or districts) of San Leonardo and Sant’Antonio, which for centuries were the main gateways to Città Alta (upper Bergamo) and therefore places of trade and transit with goods stores and warehouses. Once a year, to coincide with the feast of Sant’Alessandro, the patron saint of Bergamo, this area played host to a market that, tradition has it, dates back to the year 1000 AD. Merchants would arrive from all over Italy and even from beyond the Alps, Austria, Germany, the Swiss cantons and France. Thin stone columns marked out the

Bergamo era al centro di grandi traffici grazie anche alla produttività delle valli: magli e officine lavoravano il ferro estratto dalle miniere, mentre da decine e decine di laboratori uscivano tessuti e pannilana.

Nel 1734 il pittoresco “accampamento” che ogni anno veniva innalzato tra i borghi fu sostituito da un grandioso complesso in muratura con una serie di edifici che presentavano negozi e magazzini al pianterreno e alloggi al piano superiore.

Un secolo più tardi, il ruolo propulsore della “fiera di pietra” incominciò a venir meno, mentre incominciava a delinearsi il nuovo centro cittadino col graduale trasferimento dalla città alta di uffici e attività amministrative. L’originale sentiero che attraversava il “prato”, divenne un luogo sempre più frequentato con caffè e ristoranti che occupavano gli spazi non più utilizzati della fiera. Nasceva così il Sentierone, ancora oggi meta abituale d’incontro e di passeggio per i cittadini.

Quando venne deciso di costruire il nuovo centro cittadino, non si badò solo al fatto che fosse moderno e funzionale: Bergamo, la città degli abili mercanti e degli operosi imprenditori, avrebbe avuto sì un cuore moderno, ma avrebbe conservato il giusto mix di affari, bellezza e arte.

Proprio per questo si inserisce in questo spazio il “tempio” per eccellenza delle arti cittadine: il Teatro Donizetti.

area: recently two of them have been reconstructed at the beginning of Via XX Settembre (once known as Contrada di Prato) where they originally stood. Bergamo was also a centre of trade due to the productivity of the nearby valleys: hammers and workshops worked the iron extracted from the mines, while fabrics and wool cloth were made by the mills.

In 1734, the picturesque “encampment”, which was erected each year between the villages, was replaced by a grand stonework complex with a series of buildings housing shops and warehouses on the ground floor and lodgings on the upper floor. A century later, the “stone fair” became less important, while the new city centre began to be defined as offices and administrative activities were gradually transferred from upper Bergamo.

The original lane that crossed the “field” became an increasingly popular place, and coffee houses and restaurants began to occupy the areas no longer used by the fair. This is how the Sentierone developed, and today it is still a place where local residents meet and walk.

When it was decided to build the new city centre, attention was not only paid to making it modern and functional: Bergamo, the city of clever merchants and hard-working businessmen, would have a modern heart but also retain the correct blend of business, beauty and art. It is precisely for this reason that the “temple” par excellence to arts in the city, the Donizetti Theatre, was constructed in this area.

Già nel XVIII secolo, nella zona dove sorge oggi il teatro, si trovavano piccoli teatri di legno che ogni anno venivano demoliti alla fine della stagione e ricostruiti con l’inizio di quella nuova. Questo accadde fino al 1791 quando venne inaugurato il nuovo Teatro di Bergamo: il Teatro Riccardi, dal nome del ricco commerciante che lo fece edificare. Ed è nel 1897 che venne intitolato “Teatro Gaetano Donizetti”, in occasione del centenario dalla nascita del celebre compositore bergamasco.

Ogni anno il teatro ospita la stagione lirica con un festival a lui dedicato, oltre alla prosa, al balletto e ad altre manifestazioni musicali di livello internazionale.

Oggi sull’arioso spazio del Sentierone progettato dall’architetto Marcello Piacentini, vincitore di un concorso nazionale che fu portato a termine negli anni

This took place until 1791 when the new Bergamo Theatre, the Riccardi Theatre, named after the rich merchant who organised its construction, was inaugurated. In 1897 the theatre was renamed “Gaetano Donizetti Theatre” on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the celebrated Bergamask composer.

Each year the theatre hosts an opera season with festivals dedicated to Donizetti as well as plays, ballets and other musical events of international standing.

ettersi in viaggio vuol dire incontrare non solo luoghi nuovi ma anche persone, culture, tradizioni, modi di vivere. Tutto dipende dal modo come il “viaggiatore” si avvicina al territorio, dalla sua curiosità, dalla sua attenzione che non si limita solo alla consultazione di una mappa o di una guida turistica. Ogni territorio può offrire non poche sorprese, si prenda la Bergamasca: la varietà delle sue caratteristiche è tale che un viaggio attraverso le sue terre può essere considerato un viaggio di “scoperta”. Il visitatore in un raggio di pochi chilometri può passare dalle montagne al lago, dalle erte vallate ai dolci pendii delle colline alla pianura attraversata dai fiumi. E può scoprire contemporaneamente un’antica città come Bergamo ricca d’arte e di storia, minuscole borgate alpine, località di grande bellezza e con un patrimonio architettonico unico. Per non parlare poi dei musei, delle gallerie d’arte, dei monumenti, delle chiese, dei castelli, dei palazzi, ciascuno dei quali merita una sosta prolungata. Non sono da meno le proposte per quanto riguarda gli sport che gli appassionati possono praticare, a seconda delle stagioni: d’inverno o d’estate.

Si può dire che tutto questo oggi sia a portata di mano del turista: con mezzo proprio oppure con un’auto a noleggio, ma c’è anche una rete di trasporti pubblici molto estesa e ben strutturata. Lo stesso vale per le possibilità di soggiorno. Gli alberghi sono numerosi e di qualità, e sono in continua crescita le disponibilità di alloggio grazie ai B&B e agli agriturismi. Basta poi percorrere una qualsiasi strada che porti nelle valli, oppure che contorni i laghi o che attraversi la pianura per imbattersi in accoglienti ristoranti e simpatiche trattorie; ovunque si diffonde la possibilità di apprezzare piatti tipici e prodotti genuini grazie alla sempre maggiore valorizzazione del settore enogastronomico,

ravelling means encountering not only new places but also people, cultures, traditions and lifestyles. And this all depends on how “the traveller” approaches his destination, on his curiosity and on how much research he carries out, which is not only limited to consulting a map or tourist guidebook. Each place visited offers plenty of surprises - take Bergamo province for example. It offers such a variety of features that a trip to the area can be considered a journey of “discovery”. In just a few kilometres visitors can see mountains and lakes, steep-sided valleys, gentle slopes and plains crossed by rivers, and at the same time discover an ancient city like Bergamo rich in art and history, small alpine villages and resorts of great beauty with a unique architectural heritage, as well as museums, art galleries, monuments, churches, castles and residences, each of which is worth an extended visit. No less interesting are the offers involving sport which enthusiasts can take part in depending on the season: winter or summer.

All these attractions are today easily reached either by using your own means or with a hire car. But the area also offers an extensive and well-structured public transport network.

And the same is true of accommodation facilities. The hotels are numerous and of good quality, and the availability of other accommodation, such as bed and breakfast establishments and agritourism farms, is in continuous growth. The variety of land in Bergamo province and the presence of genuine microclimates not only enables the

production of fruit and vegetables that are immediately delivered to the table, but also the production of “zero-miles” cheeses which can be found in the cheese production areas. This is a sector in which Bergamo province is achieving levels of excellence and producing cheeses that are becoming well known even abroad, such as the celebrated Strachìtund, Branzi, Formai de Mut, Taleggio, the small fresh cheeses of the Scalve Valley and Mount Bronzone and Agrì from Valtorta. Locally found products also include salami, “lardo” (cured fat), sausages and “pancetta” (bacon). All these products have their roots firmly fixed in the countryside and mountain areas of Bergamo province. The same is true of some of the best known local dishes, such as “casoncelli” (meat-stuffed ravioli), polenta and desserts.

Recently a “new” product from the Bergamo area was presented: the truffle, whose presence was almost entirely unknown (but not ignored by avid foragers). Today the Bergamask truffle is also beginning to appear on tables. This “treasure”, which is found below ground in forests, combines well with mushrooms (high quality “porcini” - ceps or penny buns - from chestnut forests) which, together with excellent polenta, are a genuine local specialty. An ideal itinerary for the tourist is the route that crosses the production areas of Valcalepio DOC wine, which begin in the Calepio Valley and cover a wide hilly area that

La varietà del territorio bergamasco, dove si concentrano autentici microclimi, non solo consente la produzione di frutta e ortaggi che affluiscono immediatamente sulla tavola, ma il “chilometro zero” è presente anche sugli itinerari che conducono alle aree di produzione dei formaggi. Un settore per il quale la Bergamasca sta raggiungendo livelli d’eccellenza riconosciuti anche in campo internazionale, come il celebre Strachìtund, il Branzi, il Formai de Mut, il Taleggio, le formagelle della Valle di Scalve e del monte Bronzone, l’Agrì di Valtorta; il “chilometro zero” vale anche per quanto riguarda il salame, il lardo, la salsiccia, la pancetta. Tutti prodotti le cui radici sono nella più genuina tradizione della campagna e della montagna bergamasca. Lo stesso vale per i piatti tipici più noti, come i “casoncelli”, la polenta, i dolci.

Recentemente è stata presentata una “novità” del territorio bergamasco: il tartufo, una presenza quasi del tutto sconosciuta (ma non ignorata da gelosi cercatori). Oggi anche il tartufo bergamasco sta incominciando a comparire sulle tavole: un “tesoro” del sottosuolo nei boschi, che ben si accompagna ai funghi (di alta qualità i porcini nei castagneti) che, accompagnati dall’ottima polenta, sono una autentica specialità. Un itinerario ideale per il turista è quello che attraversa i luoghi di produzione del vino Valcalepio DOC che, a partire dalla stessa Valle Calepio, coprono un’ampia area collinare che si

estende fino a Sotto il Monte. Si tratta di un’area di notevole pregio dal punto di vista paesaggistico e ambientale, l’ideale per soggiorni ed escursioni comprendendo anche importanti testimonianze d’arte e di storia, con particolare riferimento all’architettura romanica. Non a caso è un territorio che si sta rivelando particolarmente vocato per la produzione dell’olio d’oliva, che ha un’area d’eccellenza sul lago di Endine. A questa preziosa corona va aggiunta la fascia collinare del Comune di Scanzorosciate dove si estendono i vigneti del celebre Moscato di Scanzo. Il Moscato di Scanzo è la più piccola DOCG (Denominazione d‘Origine Controllata e Garantita) in Italia: è un passito rosso che gli Inglesi già apprezzavano nel ‘700. It is a red “passito” (wine made from dried grapes) that the English were already enjoying in the eighteenth century. This meditation wine is made by genuine enthusiasts and one that should definitely be sampled.

’importanza che il Commercio riveste per questa terra è tale che la nascita della Camera di Commercio di Bergamo risale addirittura alla Rivoluzione francese. Con un decreto di Napoleone, firmato il 27 giugno del 1811, fu infatti costituita la Camera di Commercio, arti e manifatture di Bergamo, alla quale vennero affidate funzioni che sono proprie degli attuali enti camerali. E in virtù di questo decreto la Camera di Commercio, Industria, Artigianato e Agricoltura di Bergamo (questa la dizione corretta e ufficiale) quest’anno celebra i 200 anni di vita.

Proprio come due secoli fa, quando il suo compito era di seguire l’andamento delle attività commerciali, industriali e imprenditoriali, intervenendo con iniziative che ne sostenessero la crescita e lo sviluppo, la Camera di Commercio rivolge particolare attenzione al turismo. Nello specifico si deve ad essa tutta una serie di iniziative volte ad accrescere la qualità dell’offerta turistica. Venendo a Bergamo cercate i marchi di qualità camerali come: “Hotel di qualità” a garanzia e tutela dell’ospite, con lo scopo di valorizzare gli alberghi che si impegnino a offrire e a mantenere un alto livello di servizio, oppure “Bergamo charme”, che qualifica l’accoglienza turistica in immobili di rilievo: residenze di particolare fascino ambientale, antiche case di campagna, ville e dimore storiche, appartamenti in edifici di rilevante pregio architettonico, immobili situati in contesti urbani di significativo valore storico.

Molto interessante infine l’iniziativa del marchio di qualità “Ristorante dei Mille…sapori” allo scopo di presentare, valorizzare e promuovere la cultura gastronomica, la produzione e l’ospitalità del territorio.

he important role that trade plays in this area is such that the Chamber of Commerce of Bergamo dates back to the French Revolution. The Chamber of Commerce, Arts and Manufacturing of Bergamo was in fact established by Napoleonic decree on 27 June 1811 and entrusted with functions very similar to the chambers of commerce of today. And as a result of this decree, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Craft Trades and Agriculture of Bergamo (its correct official name) is this year celebrating its 200th anniversary.

Precisely in the same way as two centuries ago, when its responsibility was to follow the progress of commercial, industrial and entrepreneurial activities, intervening with initiatives to support growth and development, the Chamber of Commerce pays particular attention to tourism and, specifically, devotes to this sector a series of initiatives aimed at increasing the quality of the tourist offer. When coming to Bergamo, look for the chamber quality marks such as “Hotel di qualità” (Quality Hotels), which provide guarantees and safeguard guests, and were established to recognise hotels that are committed to offering and maintaining a high level of service, or “Bergamo charme”, which qualifies tourist accommodation in important buildings such as residences of particular environmental charm, old country houses, historic villas and residences, apartments in buildings of considerable architectural importance, and buildings in urban contexts of significant historical value. Finally another interesting initiative is the quality mark “Ristorante dei Mille…sapori” (Restaurant of a Thousand… flavours) whose aim is to present, valorise and promote gastronomic culture, local produce and hospitality.

ome per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.

In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il Palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista.

Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta.

I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.

Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, Via San Tomaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Accademia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utilizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

orta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demolished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.

Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone.

The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias.

Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

iazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di Via GombitoVia Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.

Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla Torre Civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo.

Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

iazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town.

Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval.

Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise Contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the Palazzo della Ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century.

Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter.

Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.
