Big and bigger. That seems to be a mutual theme in yachting, fishing and yacht transport. In this issue of Yacht Traveller Magazine, read about anglers looking for big-game fish, the bigger the better, about the transport of the world’s biggest Wally yacht sporting the tallest mast we have seen so far. But it is not size that prevails. In life we look for challenges, pride and joy in the things we do. Be it at the stern of a boat, visiting the world’s hot spots or meticulously planning the transport of yachts to stage the above. Talking about hot spots, this time in Yacht Traveller we zoom in on Miami, Florida. A thrilling destination for any yacht owner and YT points out some of its known, and lesser known, ‘must-sees’. Also, and I am especially proud of this, a story on how we are able to support OCEARCH in their study of sharks and ocean sustainability. Plenty to learn and explore. And with a salute to all ocean giants, I wish you pleasure reading this issue.

Saving the World’s Sharks Sometimes, it’s the little things that can make a big difference. In December 2014, DYT Yacht Transport loaded the research vessel M/V OCEARCH onto the DYT 686’ carrier Yacht Express in Port Everglades, FL, for a journey to Brisbane, Australia.

To be certain, this is no simple task. But thanks to DYT’s Yacht Express, this semi-submersible float on/float off ship made the loading of the 126’ M/V OCEARCH a breeze, and has delivered her to the Down Under. And that’s good for sharks world-wide. Sharks? M/V OCEARCH is the research vessel for the non-profit organization OCEARCH recognized the world over for its study of great white sharks and ocean sustainability. M/V OCEARCH is an at-sea laboratory with a custom research platform that lowers into the water and can lift a 5,000 lb. shark along with a team of scientists. Through their “open

source research” structure, OCEARCH freely shares data in near real-time through the Global Shark Tracker, allowing not only research teams globally but students and the public to learn about sharks. Collaboration between OCEARCH and over 40 institutions (including over 70 researchers) has enabled dozens of research papers to be iniated or completed. DYT Yacht Transport’s assistance in relocating M/V OCEARCH to Australia is a gift DYT is giving that affects every person who loves the ocean, according to Expedition Leader and Founding Chairman, Chris Fischer. “By moving OCEARCH around the world, DYT is helping the ocean recover faster, and that is
critical if we want to successfully accomplish our mission,” said Fischer, adding “If we were to drive the vessel to Australia ourselves, it would take us 60 days and our people and equipment would be totally taxed”.

Fischer has led 20 global expeditions in the past seven years, to advance science and education and facilitate ocean research of apex predators. Fischer’s goals are to enable scientists around the world to generate open source data to be shared. Wanting to make a global impact on the future of the ocean, Fischer began coordinating OCEARCH expeditions that brought together fishermen and scientists to tag great whites, tiger sharks and various other species so they could be tracked and their migration patterns studied. Once a shark is tagged, anyone in the world can follow it using OCEARCH’s Global Shark Tracker. “Sharks are the lions of the ocean; they are the balance keepers, and if we lose them there won’t be any fish,” Fischer stated. Making a difference is what OCEARCH and DYT Yacht Transport are doing. The world, and the sharks, thank you.

Nakhimov Yachts was responsible for construction management and the Yacht was delivered to the Owner on-time despite the fact that interior concept was changed just 8 month before the due date. Nakhimov Yachts is responsible for the management of Flying Dragon, which is commercially registered and available for charters in Caribbean (winter) and Mediterranean (summer). The interior is designed in a modern Asian style by Admiral Centro Style and Michela Reverberi with the use of modern materials from Fendi Casa, Armani Casa and Dedar tastefully combined with precious onyx and Carrara marbles. The exterior design is by Luca Dini. Fighting Big-game fishing started as a sport after the invention of the motor boat. Purpose built game fishing boats appeared early in the 20th century. According to a newspaper report at that time, a specific fishing boat had “... a deep cockpit, a chair fitted for landing big fish and leather pockets for placing the pole.

HISTORY Historically most of the locations where the sport was developed, such as Avalon, California; Florida; Bimini in the Bahamas, benefited from the presence of large numbers of gamefish relatively close to shore, within range of the boats of that era. As the vessels used for sportfishing became larger, faster, longer-ranged and

more seaworthy, big-game species are now pursued on grounds ranging from 60 or 70 miles’ distance from port. The United States has the world’s largest saltwater fishing industry and along the entire length of the East Coast, from Key West to the Gulf of Maine, big-game anglers pursue a variety of tropical and temperate sportfish.
BOATS Big-game fishing requires a boat of sufficient seaworthiness and range to transport the crew to the fishing grounds and back. The cost of a suitable boat, electronics, tackle and the operating costs (fuels and other consumables, insurance, mooring fees and maintenance) can be very substantial. Consequently, many big-game anglers prefer to use charter services where they hire the use of a boat and equipment, and the fish-finding expertise of a captain, in preference to maintaining their own. Most of the features of the classic sport fisherman were gradually developed in the 1920s and 1930s as existing motor cruisers and commercial fishing vessels were adapted for fishing with outriggers, fighting chairs and other ancillaries such as bait boxes and flybridge helm stations. These boats, though crude by modern standards, scored many pioneering big game catches of huge bluefin tuna, broadbill swordfish and
marlin. Through the 1930s and 1940s sportfishermen in Florida, amongst them John Rybovich and Ernest Hemingway, continued to innovate and refine, and in 1946 the Rybovich yard launched the Miss Chevy II, a 34-footer that crystallized all the innovations that had gone before into a design whose features - raised foredeck, flybridge controls and roomy cockpit - are still closely followed by today’s leading sportfish builders. A lot of resources are committed to the construction of private and charter billfishing boats to participate in the billfishing tournament circuit. These vessels have the range, speed, and seaworthiness to reach distant offshore fishing grounds. They are often built to luxury standards and equipped with many technologies to ease the life of the deep sea recreational fisherman, including outriggers, flying bridges and fighting chairs, and state of the art fishfinders and navigation electronics.

TECHNIQUE Once a fish is properly hooked on a line, one of the fishermen attempts to reel it in. The captain assists by maneuvering the boat so that the fish remains astern (behind the boat), while other members of the crew race to reel in the other lines so as to avoid tangling with the angler reeling in the fish. Most of the time, the fishing line used for sport fishing has a breaking strain less than the maximum force the fish can apply to the line. The fishing reels therefore have sophisticated drag mechanisms which allow the line to escape if the fish pulls on it, but keep the specified tension on the line. When hooked, most fish will circulate in different directions, and when they are not pulling away from the boat the fisherman can take the opportunity to reel in some of the line. Eventually, if
the fish tires and has not broken the line, they will be reeled in; however, the challenge does not end there. Hauling a heavy, powerful, and still very much alive fish on board the boat represents a considerable challenge, unless the fish is tagged and released. Strategies include: gaffing and pulling it in with ones hands. The fish can be fought with or without a game-chair. With a gamechair, the angler sits in a specially designed chair at the stern of the boat, and places the butt of the rod into a gimbaled mount. With large fish, this can still represent a considerable challenge, but “stand-up� game fishing, without the assistance of a chair and with the seat mount replaced by a harness, requires a good deal of strength and endurance, as well as body mass.

MARLIN FISHING Marlin are part of the billfish family, of which 10 species are of the most interest to anglers: Atlantic and Pacific blue marlin, black marlin, white marlin, striped marlin, Atlantic sailfish, Pacific sailfish, longbill spearfish, shortbill spearfish, and swordfish. Marlin fishing is considered by many anglers the most exciting species of fish to catch in offshore sport fishing, due to the size, power and elusiveness of the marlin species. Maybe that’s why fishing for marlin has captured the imagination of sport fishermen since the 1930s, when well-known angler/authors Zane Grey, who fished for black, striped, and blue marlin in the Pacific, and Ernest Hemingway, who fished the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and Cuba for Atlantic blue marlin and white marlin, wrote extensively about their pursuit and enthused about the sporting qualities of their quarry.

Lift Sevenstar Yacht Transport carries yachts to thousands of destinations across the world using the lift-on, lift-off method. Lift-on, lift-off means one can call on various ports to pick up yachts for transport. Loading on a ship operates very much the same way as a travel lift does with yachts being lifted directly from the water and being landed on purpose built multi-adjustable cradles. The exact location on deck is depicted on a detailed CAD stow plan. The loadmasters makes sure with help of divers that the lifting slings are in the exact location in light of the centre point of gravity of the yachts. LATIN FLAVOR Miami is a large metropolis with a dramatic skyline that glows after dark. Hispanic culture permeates everything in Little Havana - colorful murals, elderly men playing dominoes as they discuss politics and cigar rollers deep at work amidst Little Havana’s ever-present aroma of Cuban coffee. These shows are scheduled for the same days, essentially turning Miami into “boat show heaven” for a week.

Feadship was founded in 1949 as First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders to explore new markets outside of Europe and became a world famous brand of superior quality yachts. Its fleet now consists of more than 300 yachts. The Feadship Heritage Fleet is an association uniting owners of classic Feadships that have been built by more than 30 years ago. There are seven renowned Feadship shipyards: Royal Van Lent in Kaag, Koninklijke De Vries in Aalsmeer, but also in certain periods by Akerboom in Lisse, Van de Stadt in Zaandam, Witsen & Vis in Alkmaar, Het Fort / De Vries Lentsch in Nieuwendam or the Haarlemsche Scheepswerf / H.W. de Voogt. LOADING WALLY 165 ANATOLY Sevenstar Yacht Transport has successfully transported a 165 foot, 267 tonnes Wally yacht with a 70 meter mast from Genoa to Fort Lauderdale. The transport requested a precise planning and immaculate execution by operations manager John Kamp and experienced load master Costa Thuring. The enormous rig and the delicate carbon fiber material of this sailing yacht made the operation all the more challenging.
