After New York, San Francisco and Chicago, Washington, D.C., became the fourth U.S. city to receive a seal of approval from the internationally revered Michelin Guide, which assigned 14 stars to the District’s restaurants, including three two-star restaurants. The guide was released Oct. 13 at the National Press Club.

The three destinations on the two-star list were chef José Andrés’ theatrical Minibar, Aaron Silverman’s innovative Pineapple and Pearls on Capitol Hill and the Inn at Little Washington.

Fiola, Masseria, Blue Duck Tavern, The Dabney, Kinship, Plume, Rose’s Luxury and Tail Up Goat all received a single star. Italian and modern American cuisines were the most represented — eight out of the nine restaurants on the one-star list fell under these categories, with Japanese restaurant Sushi Taro as the exception.

The long-awaited selection of top-flight eateries was set in motion May 30, when Michelin announced the deployment of multiple inspectors around the D.C. area.

When the tire manufacturer set out to encourage customers to embark on more road trips through the Michelin Guide of the early 1900s, it limited its scope to mechanics, hotels, gas stations and a select group of restaurants.

Today, featuring more than 27 countries and nine individual cities — including D.C. — the global enterprise evaluates restaurants’ creativity and personality, as well as value, consistency and ingredient quality. Fewer than 120 restaurants in the world have been awarded what has become the top-tier threestar accolade.

With the local restaurant industry on high alert, selections from Michelin’s “Bib Gourmands Guide”— a first-round selection of lower-cost eateries — were announced Oct. 6. This designation requires restaurants to offer two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less.

“The most telling [factor] in the value of these selections is the fact that they are the restaurants that the Michelin inspectors themselves frequent when dining off the clock,” Michelin said on its public relations newswire.

Considered “more affordable, fine-dining locations” by Michelin inspectors, the city’s 19 local winners range from Greek-Mediterranean to Filipino fare, with over 15 culinary traditions represented in the final assortment.

Notable mentions include Bidwell’s fullservice Southern cuisine, 2Amy’s unique pizza crafting, Georgetown neighborhood favorite Das Ethiopian Cuisine, Kyirisan’s French-inspired Asian and China Chilcano’s Peruvian flare.

Located at the corner of 28th and M streets, Das is a short walk from campus. An

intimate two-story structure with seasonal outdoor seating and a phenomenal menu, it seems inevitable that this Georgetown gem made the cut.

“We are really excited because we try to give the best attention to customers,” Sileshi Aliform, who works at Das, said. “We provide consistent service and great value is at the core of our foundations, which makes Michelin’s acknowledgement a recognition of all the people who make our local eatery the best it can be, always keeping everything effortlessly simple.”

Four of Andrés’ D.C. outposts were selected: Peruvian-Japanese-Chinese restaurant China Chilcano, tapas joint Jaleo, GreekMediterranean Zaytinya and Mexican restaurant Oyamel. Featured in Time Magazine’s 2012 “100 Most Influential People in the World,” Andrés is the internationally recognized chef and co-owner of the renowned ThinkFoodGroup, responsible for multiple dining concepts around Washington, D.C., as well as in Los Angeles, Miami and Las Vegas.

“It truly is an exciting time for us,” ThinkGoodGroup spokesperson Margaret Chasey said. “The presence of our restaurants in Michelin’s ‘Bib Gourmands’ is truly a confirmation of the excellent standards we have continued to hold. I believe customers will appreciate that we’re recognized by international platforms.”

The transformation of D.C.’s food scene did not occur overnight — it is an accumulation of local culinary innovation that occurred gradually over the years, bite by bite.

Michelin’s annual guide has previously neglected to feature D.C. specifically.

“I am excited to announce that Michelin will be part of the extraordinary and eclectic food scene in America’s great capital,” the guide’s International Director Michael Ellis wrote on the group’s newswire May 31.

“Washington is one of the great cosmopolitan cities in the world, with a unique and storied past that includes, among so many other things, a rich culinary tradition that continues to evolve in exciting new directions.”

With its addition to the guide, D.C. joins the ranks of such global gastronomic capitals as Paris, Tokyo, London and Hong Kong.

“The Michelin Guide for Washington D.C. will become the 29th edition of the international collection, but most importantly, the first to cover an American city in the MidAtlantic region,” Michelin representatives stated through their newswire.

Innovators like Andrés, local entrepreneurs and creative chefs of eclectically imbued cuisines have collaborated equally toward eliminating what The New York Times called D.C.’s long-held label of “expenseaccount steakhouses” and “white-tablecloth hotel dining rooms.” Stale dining rooms have been replaced by lofty pop-ups, while tapas and ramen dominate over ribeyes.

The increasing accessibility and urban attitude of D.C.’s best restaurants have resonated with students on campus. The GU Eating Society is a student organization based on community, exploration and, above all, food.

“The GU Eating Society uses food as a way to learn about different cultures, and is trying to a community around the D.C. food scene. We are really excited to create a community around new restaurants we can explore as a group,” said Alex Heintze (MSB ’19), co-founder and co-president of the GU Eating Society.

“We have had the fortune of getting immigrants from all over the world. The traditional profile of an ethnic restaurant was someone who had to leave their own country without much financial support to start a casual restaurant, but now we are seeing those roots established with people taking it to the next level,” DeFerrari wrote.

After Bon Appétit Magazine named D.C. “2016’s best restaurant city of the year” in its August issue, Editor-in-Chief Adam Rapoport said he was excited for the city’s culinary ambitions during an interview with Washington’s Top News.

“When I grew up in D.C. in the ’70s and ’80s, ambitious food was limited to white tablecloths and having to reserve a month ahead of time … Food has become cool. People have always loved food, but it never had that cool factor until recently.”

For those awarded either one-, two- or three-star credit by Michelin, the pressure to maintain exceptional quality and service will be particularly demanding.

“People take the Michelin Guide very seriously, and it could really increase their credibility in the D.C. food scene,” Heintze said.

However, in a city thriving through unconventional dining creations, the challenge may continue to rest on Michelin’s capacity to keep up with innovative culinary designs.

Although D.C. has been on the map of expanding gourmet markets for years now, the introduction of internationally recognized institutions like Michelin will consolidate the efforts of a growing dining-oriented community, which has forged a truly unique setting for all those willing and able to experiment. The renewal of the city’s gastronomical diversity paired with global acknowledgement is bound to be the recipe for a bright future among D.C.’s restaurateurs.

Bill Burr reflects on value of persistence JOE SONZA

A rising star in comedy, Bill Burr has distinguished himself from the pack by expanding beyond stand-up into television and podcasts. While the Bostonian has brought millions of Americans to laughter with his numerous stand-up specials, his brazen “Monday Morning Podcast” and latest Netflix project — the raunchy, animated “F Is for Family” — proves Burr to be a Renaissance man full of surprises.

Known for his brash and provocative persona, Burr spoke with THE HOYA on Sept. 30 about what the writers’ room is like, the idea of “making it,” regrets from college and where his passion truly lies.

Burr’s world tour will call Washington, D.C., home every night from Oct. 15 to Oct. 19 at The National Theatre.

You have talked before on how seldom you hear people in your industry say they have made it. What was your dream as a kid? And how do you define making it?

Me making it was once I was selling tickets and had a following. I remember I finally bought a house at 41 years of age, and I actually said to my wife, “I know I’m actually not supposed to say this, but I feel like I made it. Like I’m happy with this. I can make my mortgage payments.” I kept making jokes, turning what I dreamed of doing into a legitimate career. There’s this big fear in my business that if you hear “You made it,” that you are going to somehow take your foot off the gas pedal, and it’s all going to go away.

What is your favorite thing about your new show “F Is for Family,” and why should people watch it?

To be honest with you, my favorite thing about the show is that we’re finished with it. It’s a lot of work. My favorite thing about the show is when we write something and it goes to the table read or we’re doing a recording, the actor who’s saying the line can barely get through the line because they’re laughing so hard. That’s basically my favorite thing. You know, if we can get somebody like Sam Rockwell, or Justin Long, David Koechner, Gary Cole, Laura Dern, if we could get all those people laughing — and if it’s a line that I actually pitched, that’s a bonus.

Talking about the writers’ room, we have many writers and comedy lovers here on campus. What is the writers’ room like, and for you personally, what makes a good comedy writer?

Well, this is the first and only writers’ room I’ve been in. From what the other writers tell me, it’s a really good room.

Granted, I’m one of the guys producing on the show, so what are they going to say, “The room sucks”? No. But, Mike Price — writer and producer for “The Simpsons” — is running the room, and he’s a very unique person in that he is a sweetheart of a guy, but he also has this drive. He really is the engine behind the show. I’ve heard nightmare stories; all the writers tell me all these stories that if you get a showrunner who’s not happily married, you’re never going home.

It is a grind.

Is it a full-time job? What does your day-to-day schedule look like — 9 to 5?

It’s more like a 10:30-7. All the way to possibly 9, 9:30 at night, depending on where you are. You come in at about 10 in the morning, and on a great day you get out around 6 or 7. We did that from the end of March to the end of July. Five days a week.

You are certainly staying busy and are doing a little bit of everything. Is your heart in stand-up? Is that number one, first and foremost for you?

Oh, absolutely. It’s not even close.

What makes a good comedian for you?

How they get from set-up to punchline.

As long as it’s just original. I don’t care if you’re a guitar act or a prop act. If you’re

funny, you’re funny. Carrot Top is funny.

One of my favorite things, because I’m still a fan of stand-up — despite the fact that I do it, I haven’t gotten jaded — is when someone new comes along, and I could just tell they’re going to be great. I swear to God I could’ve been a manager, because I see it early on in somebody. But they need to have the drive. You have to have that work ethic. You have to have that mental strength when this business slaps you down to the ground for the 9000th time that month to get back up and just go even harder.

You are doing a string of shows here in D.C. at the National Theatre. Do you like D.C.? What is different about this tour than other tours that you have done in the past?

I love it. The reason I propped there at that theatre is that, when I do that run, it ends on Wednesday. Thursday, I fly to Nashville, and Friday I tape my special. So this is a very important run of dates here.

This is more the way I like to do the road, though. I’d rather play a smaller place and do more shows than do one show and just sort of barnstorm across the country.

How was your college experience?

I wish I understood back then how lucky you were to go to college, it’s basically like this singles bar, and there’s all these number one draft picks. You’re drafting in the first round. It’s all 18-22 year olds — there are some sweethearts still available. But they get picked first.

If you’re beautiful and a sweetheart, you get locked down real quick. Then you get into your mid-20s, now you’re in the second round, which is still good. But you get into your 30s — you start getting into the later rounds — trying to find that Tom Brady. I was doing that dumb, angry, young man thing where I’m like, “Dude, chicks are psychos.” But after the 90th failed relationship, you’re like, “Maybe this is me. What am I doing wrong?”

What is your advice for college students?

No dream is out of reach. No dream is too silly. The great thing about this country is that, if you stay positive and you surround yourself with positive people and you just work your a-- off, you really are unstoppable.

Straight out of every parent’s worst nightmare, the first reported clown sightings involved clowns luring children into forests with money. Lurking around small towns across the state, these menacing, costumed figures left residents feeling uneasy. Some residents even fired gunshots into the woods. One child reported that the clowns “live in a house by a pond deep in the woods.”

“Some people run away from clowns, Penn State runs towards them,” a witness to the Penn State clown-hunting mob tweeted. At least 500 students gathered on the streets to riot and seek the clowns that were rumored to have been sighted near campus. The crowd ran through the streets chanting: “We are Penn State.” However, a Penn State police sergeant stated that there were no credible clown sightings or threats.

Swedish group Opeth continues to bridge genres with its latest release “Sorceress,” incorporating folk, jazz and classical notes into its original death-metal roots.

As of the most dynamic contemporary progressive metal acts, Swedish group Opeth has deftly bridged genres, melded influences and defied categorization for almost 30 years. The group continued this trend with the release of “Sorceress” — its 12th studio album — on Sept. 30.

“Sorceress” sees Opeth continue the drift from their death metal roots in favor of folk, jazz and classical influences. The driving force behind Opeth’s sonic dynamism and continued innovation is also the only founding member in the group’s current lineup — guitarist, singer and songwriter Mikael Akerfeldt.

The Hoya spoke with Akerfeldt on Oct. 9 about the group’s sound, direction and personal approach to making the new album.

While the metal genre is often more noticeably rhythmic and percussive than melodic, Akerfeldt’s use of acoustic guitars and intricate guitar harmonies has pushed Opeth into a league of its own. This is evident from the first note, often offsetting the album’s dark lyrical theme of all-consuming love.

“I have always been fascinated by the acoustic guitar. That comes from me working in a guitar shop that only sold acoustic guitars back in the day. We’ve always had acoustic guitars, but it has escalated more and more over time,” Akerfeldt said.

The album’s opening track, “Persephone,” sets a delicate tone for the album as an acoustic, classical Spanish melody, which promotes a feeling of romance underneath the somber lyrics, “a beloved name inside my heart, a fleeting glance became the start, a missing word I am still awaiting, a wretched deception I am creating.” The song’s biggest contribution to the album is its assertion that Opeth is doing more than appealing to a particular fan base; it is trying to locate a deeper meaning and purpose through music.

“I’ve been the main songwriter since the beginning, and I’ve always approached songwriting with the same intent. I’ve never written for fans or anyone else. It’s always been an attempt to write music that I would listen to,” Akerfeldt said.

His inclinations have clearly changed, however, as this sedate, sparkling introduction stands in sharp contrast to the group’s early work. Their 2003 debut album, “Orchids,” set the band on a course to stardom in an atmosphere in which instrumental brutality held sway. This album’s new approach is a reflection of the band’s humble sensibilities and refinement.

“It helps create a specific dynamic on the record. We’re not one of those bands with a macho attitude where we want to blow people away with heaviness or speed. We can do that if we want to, but there’s more to it than that,”

OPETH

Mikael Akerfeldt has been the driving force behind Opeth’s sound since its inception.

Akerfeldt said.

This latent ability to amaze listeners instrumentally, however, is evident in “The Wilde Flowers,” in which Akerfeldt reminds listeners of his virtuosic guitar abilities in a solo akin to the neo-classical shred work of his Swedish contemporary, Yngwie Malmsteen. The latter half of the song is dominated by an enchanting interlude of synth tones and a crystalline, melodic guitar solo.

The album’s eponymous and most memorable track begins with a dissonant, fuzz-filled guitar riff over a walking bass line. About four minutes into the album, tones more characteristic of Opeth arrive as Akerfeldt’s percussive, muted, drop-tuned guitar pounds through a haunting progression. The attention to detail throughout the album is evident in the song’s production, contrasting crystal-clear drums and vocals with a saturated bass line.

“Will O the Wisp” is an overture to the folkrock genre and is particularly inspired by British rock group Jethro Tull. The solo makes heavy use of Akerfeldt’s blues vocabulary and song-crafting prowess. While the latter has not always been his specialty, his perceived role in the group has evolved over time.

“From the third album onward, I’ve focused on being more of a songwriter than just a guitar player,” Akerfedlt said.

“Chrysalis” is perhaps the most notable track on the album. At over seven minutes, it is an epic, progressive track that excels in channeling some of the group’s central influences while also managing to chart new territory. In this sense, Opeth has outdone their progressive rock peer Dream Theater at its own game. While managing to retain the band’s characteristic sound, Akerfeldt channels vocals similar to Avenged Sevenfold’s “A Little Piece of Heaven” while the track’s organ hearkens to the work of Deep Purple’s late organist Jon Lord.

The seventh track on the album, “The Seventh Sojourn,” highlights the diversity of influences behind Akerfeldt’s songwriting.

While the foundation has stayed very much the same, his exposure to new music is evident in the evolution of the group’s sound and sonic approach.

“Some of those influences have definitely stayed the same. Bands I grew up with like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, The Scorpions, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are always going to be there. I’m also a record collector though, so I’ve stumbled on different genres through my collecting, and that’s bound to influence me in one way or another,” Akerfedlt said.

The instrumentation features drums, guitar and strings that are heavily influenced by traditional Middle Eastern music. The strings, arranged by Will Malone — who has also worked with Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and The Verve — add atmosphere and presence to a track that would otherwise be grounded only by its droning bass.

“Strange Brew” is the track that will appeal most to classic rock fans. While the title may bring to mind the track on Cream’s 1967 album “Disraeli Gears,” the track charts its own course aside from the high-octane blues guitar.

Warbling piano and layered vocals introduce a track that balances the heavy progressive style of Gojira and the subtler melodic wizardry of Mahavishnu Orchestra.

“Sorceress” at times feels like it is unsure what it is trying to be. In any similar group’s discography, it would be an outlier. However, in the context of Opeth, the album makes perfect sense as a continuation of the band’s trend toward experimentation and refusal to be narrowly categorized.

“I think it’s been in the wings since the beginning that we would eventually do something like what we are doing now,” Akerfeldt said. “We turned down the distortion and made it sound a bit more human. Our whole perception, when it comes to album production, has changed.”

Through contrasting heavy and calm, dark and light, and fast and slow, “Sorceress” negotiates meaning in an often-polarized genre abreast acoustic interludes, jazz-inspired guitar solos and a constant lyrical darkness.

Close by, in Martinsburg, an 18-year-old man was arrested for harassing neighbors, roaming the neighborhood with a clown mask and a toy pistol.

On Sept. 14, a police report was filed regarding clowns surrounding a white van. Upon investigation, no clowns were found, and no costumes were located in or near the van. The caller, Brandon Moody, later admitted to fabricating the story. In the same town, people dressed as clowns made several threats of violence against public schools.

ver the nearly two months I have been in South Korea, it is safe to say I have settled into a routine.

I have a list of my favorite restaurants, my favorite places to shop and places I now know to avoid. With coursework and looming midterms, it is easy to forget that, aside from being a student, I am also a tourist. With this in mind, my trip to the city of Busan this past weekend was a much-needed break and an incredible experience.

Busan is the second largest city in South Korea and is less than half the size of the Seoul. A port city, Busan is home to beautiful beaches, great seafood and plenty of places to explore. While there is much to do there, it has the same relaxed, laid-back atmosphere that seems to exist in every beach town around the world.

Seoul is such a fast-paced, bustling city that it can be overwhelming and hard to catch your breath sometimes. So much so, in fact, that you can forget to stop and take in your surroundings. In Busan, my experience was just the opposite. I had time. I had space. I loved stepping out onto my hotel balcony every morning and looking over the city to see the foggy mountains in the distance, and thinking how grateful I was to be in that place at that moment. Spending Friday night at the beach drinking wine coolers with my friends was a welcome respite from the smoke-filled clubs to which I have grown accustomed.

This is not to say that my time spent in Busan was all relaxation and no adventure. The Busan International Film Festival, one of the largest film festivals in Asia, was happening when I was in town, and I was offered the opportunity to choose from hundreds of screenings of films from all over the world. I also visited Shinsegae Department Store, the largest department store in the world, before finishing off the weekend by crossing an item off my Korea bucket list: eating sannakji — live octopus.

The fish markets in Busan are unlike anything I had ever seen. Each seller has an assortment of large and small tanks filled with an array of sea critters ranging from eel to octopus to fish. This place is far from vegetarian-friendly, because after you have made your selection, the seller reaches into the tank, picks up the poor creature and chops it up right in front of you.

A contemporary retelling of Homer’s epic “The Odyssey,” the theater and performance Sstudies program’s first production of the year, “Anon(ymous),” tells the story of Anon — played by Cristina Ibarra (COL ’17) — a refugee who finds her journey back home.

The play is directed by Randy Baker, a seasoned playwright and co-artistic director of D.C.’s Rorschach Theatre. Baker and his wife, professor Debra Sivigny, a lauded member of Georgetown’s department of performing arts, are seeing their vision for the work come to fruition.

Written by Naomi Iizuka in 2006, “Anon(ymous)” kicks off the program’s 2016-2017 season, which is themed “Discover and Celebrate.” Iizuka comes from a distinctly multicultural background.

Born in Tokyo to an American mother and a Japanese father, she grew up in Indonesia, the Netherlands and Washington, D.C. “Anon(ymous)” features a minimalist approach to set design that parallels the ambiguity in the play’s real-world setting.

“The entire play is set in a king of nonlocation. It’s nonrealistic and representative of everywhere and nowhere,” audience member Victoria Leach (COL ’19) said.

Anon, a refugee who fled from her war-torn country on a boat, was separated from her mother before she was old enough to remember her, and has since been living with an adopted family in a foreign land.

Meanwhile, Anon’s mother, Nemasani, played by Madelyn Rice (COL ’20), has been working in a sweatshop for years, knitting a shroud for her child, whom she believes is dead. She undoes her work every night, however, in order to avoid marrying her oppressive suitor and boss,

Mr. Mackus. Anon soon embarks on a surreal journey in search of her real mother.

Along the way, she encounters vicious characters alongside kind, good-natured people who help her through her journey, including a disturbing yet charming one-eyed butcher — masterfully played by Charlie Trepany (COL ’18) — Anon’s lighthearted, guitar-playing childhood friend Naja, portrayed by Johnny Monday and love-struck Mr. Mackus, played by Christopher Lovell.

Anon’s name also changes throughout the play, inspired by objects she encounters: She takes on the names Curry, Lawn, Nobody and Monkey. A theater and philosophy major, Ibarra said she found her performance as Anon equally challenging and enriching.

“What drew me to Anon’s character was, ironically enough, that it was originally casted as a male. It could be played regardless of gender, and there was something so admirable about her willpower and endurance after having been through so much,” Ibarra said.

The language of “Anon(ymous)” is refreshingly transparent, swinging smoothly from banal and even casual to sincerely poetic and visceral. The dream-

like plot encourages brutal exchanges that the spectator does not anticipate until they have already struck. The play serves as a commentary on the legitimacy of the term “exotic,” severe racial prejudices, blind displays of entitlement and xenophobia.

“When we hear about refugees in the modern day, there have been a lot of attempts to make that a more human issue, we listen to specific stories, we put a face to this concept, so I think that having a play that emphasizes that is essential,” Rice said.

Rice was also moved by the play’s universality.

“Everyone in this story is portrayed as a refugee, we all come from somewhere else and are just at different places and have had different experiences. That universal journey has shaped us in different ways. There’s something very real about struggle and trying to find your place,” Rice said.

Beyond its magnificently talented ensemble, the production has a dedicated crew, including stage manager William Blanchette (COL ’17), sound designer Kenny Neal and props designers Deb Crerie and Kay Rzasa.

“Anon(ymous)” is more than the retelling of a classic in a contemporary context, however. Not only does it comment on the polarizing issues of immigration and refugee crises, but it is also relevant to the more ubiquitous theme of belonging. “‘The Odyssey’ is just the trip home. What does home mean to me when I don’t actually have any notion of what home is?” Baker said. “What it says about the refugee experience is important and has to be told, but is also universal. We live in a world where sometimes it’s hard to find the place where we belong, defining one’s identity is such a complicated thing.”

The play is showing at the Davis Center’s Devine Studio Theater on Oct. 14 and 15 at 8 p.m.

Having my food killed in front of me was, without a doubt, an experience I will never forget, however I would not say it is something I am keen to experience again. Once I got over the fact that it was still twitching, the octopus was actually delicious. I chewed carefully, having read online that a few people had died from choking on sannakji. That said, I recommend anyone interested in a little culinary adventure to go for it. It is with this attitude that I have been trying to go about everything I do in South Korea.

Busan will forever be a great memory for me. I cannot put into words how excited I am to be in South Korea each and every day.

Even when I may be bored sitting in class, I know that the opportunities to experience something new are endless here. My trip to Busan underscores the importance of stepping back from your day-to-day routine and being open to whatever adventure presents itself.

Starring Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig, “Masterminds” hits predictable comedy notes abreast mediocre writing.

However, it is partially redeemed by one feature: many of the on-screen events are closely adapted from real life, specifically the 1997 Loomis Fargo Bank Robbery, nicknamed the “Hillbilly Heist.”

David Scott Ghantt (Galifianakis) really did steal $17.3 million from his employers in an armored van. He really did befriend the hit man sent to kill him, and he really did escape to Mexico while his co-conspirators lived large on the purloined money. With this kind of largerthan-life story, one would expect the movie to write itself. Perhaps, however, director Jared Hess — of “Napoleon Dynamite” fame — made a mistake in actually letting it do so.

Galifianakis sets the tone of the film early on, delivering slapstick comedy in a slow southern drawl, targeting stereo-

typical “hick” behavior. Although he is undoubtedly funny, Galifianakis bumbling through seemingly simple tasks is hardly a new role for the 47-year-old actor, and, by the third or fourth time in the movie, it had a rote quality to it.

Wiig plays the femme fatale Kelly Campbell, convincing Ghantt to commit the heist with some rudimentary seduction. Here, it feels that Wiig’s talent is wasted on her character, who does little more than listen obediently to gang leader Steve Chambers, played by Owen Wilson. Neither performance is poor, but both lack the material and charisma to lead a comedy.

Despite the underwhelming performance of the movie’s stars, however, the supporting cast turns in surprisingly funny performances. Leslie Jones plays an FBI investigator and draws laughs in a handful of her appearances. Kate McKinnon portrays Ghantt’s fiancee and is hilariously spacey, boasting an impressive deadpan mannerism. The real star of the show, however, is Jason Sudeikis as

 Mike McKinney, a hit man hired to take out David Ghantt. In a hilarious turn of events, the two become friends and allies, while Sudeikis easily becomes the most charismatic character of the film, somehow making the life of murdererseem charming.

The film’s shortcomings may arise from its tumultuous production history. Jim Carrey was originally cast as the lead, and it is easy to see where his manic intensity would have benefited the role.

Carrey’s expressive body-acting would have offered more than Galifianakis’ stoic, deadpan delivery, likely serving to increase the absurdity that underscored the movie’s best moments.

Additionally, the movie was originally set to air last summer, but the film studio, Relativity Media, filed for bankruptcy, jeopardizing its possibility of release.

A year later, it looks like it might have stagnated on the editing floor. Sharp moments of witty dialogue, highlighted by moments of visual comedy, shine brightly between cliche bank heist narratives

and dry interludes.

One thing the movie does seem to get right is the visuals. The costumes are bright and attractive, and sets like the Mexican beach and the mansion are memorable. The “hick-chic” shared among the movie’s stars is a brilliant source of visual comedy. Galifianakis’ domestic costume, composed of laughably large shorts and either a uniform top or wife-beater tank, is contrasted by pastel vacation-wear and Wiig’s bleached highwaisted jeans. The costuming eventually becomes a running gag as Galifianakis attempts to disguise himself as he evades both INTERPOL and a hired gun, resulting in a series of increasingly absurd wigs.

Ultimately, “Masterminds” is a mixed bag. It does manage to draw laughs, but it ends up relying heavily on visual humor and actor charisma that is inconsistent at best. The supporting cast outshines the stars, though that may be a product of the inconsistent writing. Save this one for Netflix.

Drake Signees Return to DC

The world met Majid Al Maskati on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Sept. 20, 2013, but probably forgot about him an hour later.

He sang backup vocals for Drake, one of the biggest hip-hop stars on the planet, on their collaboration “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” The song was one of Drake’s biggest yet; it peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 before being named Pitchfork’s best song of 2013. On the studio version, Drake’s singing was noticeably flat, and Al Maskati carried the second verse even though it is Drake’s verse. When his wiry frame strode onto the stage at 9:30 Club on Oct. 9, he was no longer just singing backup.

Signed to Drake’s October’s Very Own Sound label in 2013, the two have since worked more with Drake — “Feel No

 Ways” on Drake’s album “Views”; “My Love” on Majid Jordan’s self-titled debut LP — and have gathered a cult following largely in part to Drake’s co-sign. Now on their second North American tour, Majid Jordan makes every city feel like its native Toronto.

Ullman’s synths and drums were as luxe as Al Maskati’s satin bomber jacket, and Al Maskati’s voice carried a confidence built on three years of success without losing its signature waver.

After coming out to an unreleased intro track, Majid Jordan launched into the show with “A Place Like This,” the title track of their 2014 EP. Ullman perched stage left with a few keyboards while Al Maskati floated back and forth in front of a simple lighting setup forming three parallel vertical lines, a type of logo the two have used to brand themselves.

Listeners who have followed the duo since their pre-OVO days — when they made music under the moniker Good People — could note the consistency in its sound and how its style has endured without becoming stale. The cohesiveness of their discography allowed for their set list to flow from one song to the next, dipping into cuts from “A Place Like This” and “Majid Jordan” to present their work as a single body.

Majid Jordan has been one of the Toronto music scene’s best-kept secrets. On Sunday night, the secret was out.

After being signed to Drake’s OVO Sound record label by Noah “40” Shebib, Majid Jordan released its debut album in February of 2016 to middling reviews.

Majid Jordan’s status is deeply ingrained in the city of Toronto; the duo met there in college before becoming part of Drake’s musical takeover of the city’s music scene. Even across a border and 350 miles away, the crowd at 9:30 Club felt just as close to the storyline of the group’s success. Al Maskati said that D.C. sang fan favorite “Her” the loudest of any city on their previous tour; he challenged the crowd to top its previous effort, and it was apparent that it had.

The crowd buzzed to “Shake Shake Shake,” one of “Majid Jordan’s” most uptempo tracks. The energy slowed to a contemplative sway for “Summers Over Interlude,” a track on Drake’s 2016 album

“Views” that put Al Maskati’s whispery tenor front and center. Even though the concert was sold out and the floor was packed, the room shrank and hushed.

An unexpected bonus came when the duo performed “Patience” from “Afterhours,” their first project together.

“Some of you have been following us since we were known as Good People,” Al Maskati said. “This is for all you good people here tonight.” It was a meaningful nod to their pre-OVO days; it was proof they hadn’t allowed their success to change their sound.

The show was the perfect showcase for Al Maskati’s voice and Ullman’s deep synths. While each half of Majid Jordan is a formidable performer in his own right, the combination of the two transcended the sum of its parts. The hourlong set dove into much of the group’s catalog, but the crowd wanted more.

After a few minutes of cheering and begging, Ullman sauntered back to his keyboards and struck up the chords for “Learn From Each Other.” Al Maskati glided back on stage and performed the song with a personal air unmatched by the recorded version, pointing out members of the audience while he sang, “We can only learn from each other / And I only learn from you.” They strung out the encore like they didn’t want to leave, either. “D.C., because we love you so much, we want to give you another one.”

It was only fitting that Majid Jordan ended on the song that launched its success. “Sing along to this one if you know it,” Al Maskati said with a hint of sarcasm.

Everyone in the building knew “Hold On, We’re Going Home” right down to the subtle backing vocals Al Maskati sang behind Drake when they performed on “Ellen.”

Since that first performance in 2013, Majid Jordan has been one of the Toronto music scene’s best-kept secrets. On Sunday night, the secret was out.

Anything but Words Banks and Steelz Meena Raman

Banks and Steelz is best described as an exemplification of cross-genre collaboration.

The duo, composed of famed Wu-Tang Clan leader RZA and Interpol vocalist Paul Banks, recently debuted its first album, “Anything But Words.” A complex blend of alternative rock and rap, the project has a distinctly experimental feel and features myriad musical guests and styles.

The album starts off strong with “Giant,” a piece that lends itself to the beautiful softness of Banks’ voice. Though this opener does not feature RZA’s best verse, his vocals are still incredibly impassioned, deftly weaving through a personal narrative. Melding a strong beat, skilled drumming and a cascading techno sound, “Giant” may not be the most cohesive single, but it is an exciting start. Its kinetic, surrealist video is as fun to watch as the track is to listen to.

“Wild Season” is one of the album’s standouts, featuring the stunning vocals of folkrock icon Florence Welch, lead singer of Florence and the Machine. This song smoothly fuses elements of rap and rock, as Welch and Banks harmonize effortlessly in its chorus while RZA delivers some of his most refined and captivating raps on the album.

Released as a single prior to the album’s release, “Love and War” received significant media attention for the appearance of RZA’s former bandmate, Wu-Tang rapper Ghostface Killah. The track incorporates a variety of effects and instruments, even melancholic Latin-flavored trumpeting, to produce a nearly cinematic sound.

“Love and War” is one of the most lyrically powerful tracks as well, delving deeply into the theme of toxic, unconditional love: “She

let my love spill/ Out on the floor the love changed the war/ Both trying to win trying to claim the law/ Infatuation morphed to fabrication.” Like “Giant,” “Love and War” boasts an impressive, albeit occasionally grisly video as Banks and RZA appear as a pair of hired guns amid a Quentin Tarantino-inspired Yakuza torture scene.

The album’s titular single “Anything But Words” and the catchy “Ana Electronic” are other standouts in Banks and RZA’s repertoire. However, there are a few low notes on this album, including “Can’t Hardly Feel.”

Unlike most other songs on the album, it has a rather hollow and unoriginal sound that lacks excitement or tension. The song could have been far stronger with a few added vocal or instrumental techniques, but Banks and RZA failed to deliver.

Though mainstream popularization of the rap-rock fusion genre is minimal — most notably Kanye West and Chris Martin’s softer 2007 hit “Homecoming” — Banks and RZA make strides in making it more successful.

Unlike some of their counterparts, who take the kitschy “heavy metal meets hard rap” route, Banks and RZA rely on a subtler, whimsical approach. Their work more closely resembles the sample-heavy collaboration between Benny Cassette and Ghostface Killah — entitled “Milk Em” — coupled with the refreshing balance of emerging rap-rock artist Shane Eli. After their final American appearance in Arizona this weekend, Banks and RZA will tour throughout Europe for the remainder of the year, hitting a selection of edgy concert venues and cultural showcases. While this album marks the duo’s entry into the rap-rock world, its performances are already highly anticipated, with both artists having amassed large fan bases through their work

“Anything But Words” is an album five years in the making, with the earliest demos made in 2011 and recording beginning in 2013. Thankfully, its deeply layered and reworked sound is worth the wait. Though still refining their direction, Banks and RZA have found their footing in the unexpectedly melodious collaboration of two very different genres. Retaining the trademark independent qualities of both Banks’ and RZA’s music, “Anything But Words” is original, expressive and just the right amount of loud.

Singles on the album share some instrumental elements, but are still distinctively produced without too much intertrack blend. The album’s lyrical message is remarkably multifaceted, touching on love, conflict and even oppression, which effectively pulls together the high-energy release. Having been so widely established within their own genres, Banks and RZA are likely to find success in their new venture, already showing promise and ingenue with this album.

Saint Motel ‘YOU CAN BE YOU’ Indie-pop band Saint Motel recently released “You Can Be You,” a catchy single off its upcoming album, “saintmotelevision.” The track’s warm, almost psychedelic sound matches its positive message, as lead singer A.J. Jackson smoothly repeats “You can be you, but you’ll always be mine.” Though the track does not quite have the same quirky, bubbly feel that made Saint Motel famous with 2014’s “My Type,” it does incorporate upbeat bass riffs, keyboards and whistling, among the band’s key elements.

A Funky Twist on Ramen BANTAM KING

Bantam King, the new ramen restaurant from the team behind Daikaya, is taking D.C. by storm. The noodle restaurant is located a block away from the Verizon Center in Chinatown, taking over a location formerly belonging to Burger King. The restaurant pays homage to the fast-food chain by resurrecting its booths and tile flooring. However, the addition of pop art decor gives the space an eclectic flair.

The interior of the restaurant features a bright array of colors, comic strip clippings, Japanese lanterns and Christmas lights. Together with retro hip-hop music, the vibe of Bantam King transports all patrons to the past.

The difference between Bantam King and its partner restaurant, Daikaya, is that Bantam King focuses solely on chicken ramen, while Daikaya focuses on a Sapporo-style ramen, which features a pork-based broth. Bantam King offers two types of broth: chintan, a clear broth, and paitan, a thicker, creamier broth. The menu also includes different flavors for the chicken broths, including soy, miso and a spicy option.

Bantam King’s menu also includes a popular fried chicken dish, a unique change of pace from the restaurant’s primary focus. The restaurant’s collection of Japanese beers and old-fashioned

sodas furthers the feel of nostalgia that pervades the establishment. It also offers a list of sakes for those over 21 who are interested in adding a bit more flair to their ramen experience.

I ordered the miso paitan ramen ($13), a cloudier broth with a light taste. The warm broth, made with soy beans, chicken, egg and sprouts, was thick, and had just the right amount of salt. The flavor of the chicken married perfectly in the broth with the soy and sprouts, creating a layered palette. There was a generous amount of authentic ramen noodles in the broth. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente and were not made soggy in the rich broth. The texture of the noodles paired with the savory broth had me

scraping the bottom of my bowl with my chopsticks for more. The noodles were the star component of the dish.

My friend ordered the spicy miso ramen ($13.75), which is a variation of the miso paitan with a spicy kick. The broth of the spicy miso is darker and thinner as well.

While the broth definitely had a sharp, fiery aroma, thick noodles and peanut butter were layered together in the broth to balance the intensity of the spice.

The broth also included other flavor notes including salty egg, rich chicken, fresh sprouts and soy beans. The spicy miso is a great option for people who enjoy a dish with a kick that will not set their mouths on fire or dominate the dish.

The service at Bantam King was also excellent. The servers were eager to explain the menu. They explained in detail each type of ramen and made insightful recommendations based on each person’s flavor preferences. The servers sported trendy outfits to pair with the swanky vibe of the restaurant. My only complaint was that the music was blaring — the noise echoed off the walls of the restaurant, making it difficult to hear the server and my friend, who was seated just across the table.

Bantam King is a perfect pit stop for anyone near the Verizon Center. From the speed of the service to its affordable prices to its wide range of choices in savory chicken ramen, Bantam King is more than your average ramen spot.

Similar to “Hide Away,” “Sit Still, Look Pretty” embodies the idea that it is important for women to feel confident and not let anyone dictate the way they live.

With a fast tempo and bass, “Sit Still, Look Pretty” is the perfect song to blast while working out or driving with the windows down.

Hoyas Split Pair of Big East Matchups at McDonough Cameron Perales Hoya Staff Writer

Georgetown volleyball (614, 2-5 Big East) split matches against the Providence Friars (12-10, 0-6 Big East) and the Big East–leading Creighton Blue Jays (12-6, 6-0 Big East) this past weekend.

The Hoyas beat the Friars 3-1 this past Friday and fell to the Blue Jays 3-0 on Saturday in McDonough Arena.

Against Providence, Georgetown was able to dictate the pace of each set they won, jumping out to leads in the first, third and fourth sets. In the final set, the Hoyas and the Friars played a competitive match. The match was tied at 24 before senior Ashlie Williams slammed home back-toback kills to seal the victory for the Blue and Gray.

Head Coach Arlisa Williams was particularly enthused with the team’s service game and how it allowed them to control the match.

“Serving is the first line of defense,” Coach Williams said.

“So, if we are serving aces or serving them out of system, it makes it easier for us to block balls, and I think you saw us have some good blocking numbers as well. We were also able to dig balls better behind the block, and, from there, that helped us with the transition game, and, from there, it was all momentum. From there, it’s all about the point of contact.”

In the match against Creighton — the Big East leader and one of the top teams in the country — Georgetown played hard but could not keep Creighton from taking leads early in sets.

The Blue Jays proved to be too strong at the point of attack, despite great defensive efforts from sophomore setter Paige McKnight who recorded eight digs. Sophomores and outside hitters Symone Speech and Alyssa Sinnette chipped in offensively for a combined 15 kills. Speech also played an ex-

ceptionally clean game, hitting .421 and accruing no errors in the match.

“Creighton is a very, very talented team. We started off a little bit slow and dug ourselves into a hole that we had to try and climb out of,” Speech said.

“What I think we did well was showing a lot of grit in the periods that we were fighting back and climbing out. Our middles were very effective and continue to be for us. I also think we continued to serve competitively.”

The Blue and Gray now look forward to another pair of Big East matchups this weekend, taking on Xavier (10-10, 4-3 Big East) and Butler (13-10, 2-5 Big East) in a Midwest road trip.

Georgetown’s first match takes them to Cincinnati, Ohio this Friday to take on Xavier, a team that comes into this match with a streaky conference record of 4-3.

Butler has also had some struggles of its own, coming into this match as losers of

three in a row and with an overall conference record of 2-5 despite being 11-5 in the nonconference.

“The road trip is always tough, because it’s October, and our players are in the middle of exams, and they have papers and projects, and they’re already stressed out, and we’re putting them on the road, so that’s always tough,” Coach Williams said. “I think both teams bring us very different things.”

The Hoyas are looking to put together a full match of clean volleyball. Coach Williams noted that many matches have seen the Hoyas play very well in a few aspects of the game but rarely see everything click all at once.

“When you watch us play, you know we are a good serving team, we are a good hitting team, we can be a good blocking team, and we are a good defensive team. We have seen all of the pieces, but we haven’t seen them consistently enough,”

Squads See Varied Results in Front of Home Crowd Mary Burke

The Georgetown swimming and diving women’s team (2-1) defeated Johns Hopkins (0-2) but fell to William and Mary (2-0) while the men’s team (1-2) was swept in the double-dual meet at their first home meet of the season on Saturday.

The upper deck of McCarthy Pool was packed as spectators came out to support the team. Head Coach Jack Leavitt said the team was excited to use the environment in which they had been practicing. “[The crowd added] a fun atmosphere for a swim meet,” Head Coach Jack Leavitt said.

Seniors and co-captains David Chung and Katie Duncalf also expressed their thankfulness

for the fans.

“It really does help us swim better,” Duncalf said. “Having that positive energy up in the stands really catalyzes the way we swim and makes us go faster. … The energy carries [the team] in more ways than [the fans] could ever imagine.

[I hope it] is a trend that continues for the next few home meets.”

Both Leavitt and the team captains are proud of the effort put forth each day by the student-athletes and the improvements made from last week’s meet against the University of Delaware.

“We are always just trying to compare ourselves to where we have been in the past …

We’re really proud of the effort that we have put in. To get

up and race the way we have today with the amount of work we are doing is pretty impressive so I am really proud of the team today,” Leavitt said.

“What we did the past couple of days are definitely setting ourselves up for a better week.”

Duncalf and Chung highlighted the team’s grit and positive mentality, accredit-

ing those characteristics to impressive swims against two quick teams.

Sophomore Laine Morgan pulled away wins in both of her individual events, and junior Christine Ryan scored first for the 200-yard freestyle.

Junior Molly Fitzpatrick placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke, and Duncalf set a pool record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.93.

“I just wanted to start out my first half of the race strong … and then really bring it home in the last half and show everybody what I have to offer,” Duncalf said.

“Even though we are seniors, we still have it in us. This might be our last year but we are tough and [teams] will

not want to mess with us. We want to show everybody that that is still the case.”

“We feel pretty confident when we go into any meet that [Duncalf] and [Fitzpatrick] are going to compete to win every event that they are in, and it was great to see them get rewarded with some really fast swims with the work they have put in,” Leavitt said.

“We are really happy with the progress that we have been making even with all the work we have on our plate right now,” Leavitt said, but he is sure to make his team aware of the improvement still needed to be made.

“This has been one of our toughest weeks of training yet,” Chung said. “We defi-

nitely saw the effects of that this week, but that does not mean the coaching staff is going to lighten up by any means.”

Duncalf cited the sprint work and speed work adding to the rigor of the workouts.

“We’re all tired, we’re all rundown. That does not mean we aren’t going to show results,” Duncalf said.

“The takeaways from this week were tremendous and what we did the past couple of days are definitely setting ourselves up for a better week next week,” Chung said.

Looking ahead, the team is now preparing for an upcoming meet against Towson this weekend in Baltimore.

The meet kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m.

Prescott Proves Capable Starter GU Looks to Bounce Back

D

allas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is adept at many things. As a marketer, businessman, showman and promoter, he is without equal in the NFL. An adept in-game manager or roster scout he is not.

While the Cowboys have enjoyed early success primarily due to two rookies, quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliot, Jones is threatening to undo the team’s growing confidence by asserting that quarterback Tony Romo will be given his starting job back when fully healthy.

Romo was injured in the preseason and has rehabbed ahead of schedule, but, for the sake of the Cowboys and their millions of fans, Jones should backtrack and learn from history to see that Prescott should remain at the helm of America’s Team.

Prescott is playing unbelievably well for a rookie. Prescott is averaging around 250 yards per game and completing 69 percent of his passes. A deeper dive also shows that by averaging eight yards per pass attempt — good for seventh farthest in the league through five weeks this year — the Cowboys are trusting Prescott to make longer, more challenging passes.

While most rookies may not be given the full playbook or would not be trusted to challenge defenses by throwing the ball vertically down the field, this does not seem to be much of an issue for Prescott.

The biggest plus for Prescott is simple: no turnovers. Through five games he has yet to throw an interception despite throwing the ball around 30 times a game.

Prescott is also aided by a stellar offensive line that gives him more time to throw and allows receivers’ routes to fully develop — two godsends to a quarterback.

Even if the offensive line cannot pass block with 100 percent effectiveness, Prescott is an extremely mobile quarterback and much more elusive than Tony Romo. Though the Cowboys do not draw up many designed run plays for Prescott, he has been able to

score three touchdowns on the ground.

The additional threat of a more mobile quarterback is also important for game planning, because it creates the potential for over-pursuits by opposing defenses and wide open running lanes, of which Prescott is more likely to take advantage.

Michael Ippolito Helping Prescott lead the Cowboys’ offenses is rooking running back Ezekiel Elliot.

Through five games, Elliot leads the NFL in rushing, which is having huge implications on Dallas’s play-calling strategy. Last season, the Cowboys called passing plays about 58 percent of the time; this season that number has fallen to 49 percent, but the offense is scoring over eight more points per game this season than it did last season.

That disparity is in part because the Cowboys suffered early season injuries last year to Romo and star receiver Dez Bryant, but it does not change the fact that the emergence of Elliot has made Dallas’ offense the most balanced in the league without having to sacrifice much productivity.

In short, Dallas’ offense is in no way broke — Tony Romo is not needed to fix it.

History is also on the side of Prescott. Clearly the Cowboys are not the first team to lose its franchise quarterback before or early in the start of a season, but how a team handles it could make all the difference between competing for a Super Bowl title and thinking about what could have been.

Early in the 2001 season, then-Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe suffered gruesome internal injuries during a game against the Jets. His replacement was the Patriots’ sixth round draft pick, Tom Brady.

Brady entered the game and maintained the starting job throughout Bledsoe’s recovery and led the team to an 11-3 record in the games he started. That season ended with New England winning its first of four Super Bowls. At the time, starting Brady over Bledsoe was an extremely controversial decision: Bledsoe was healthy by the end of the November, had already led New England to a Super Bowl a few years before in 1996-1997 season and was a $100 million quarterback.

Bill Belichick saw the budding chemistry the team was building with Brady and figured a late-season quarterback switch would do more harm than good.

A similar situation occurred with the 1997 Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs were a powerhouse in the 1990s and boasted a consistent toptier defense that made them constant Super Bowl contenders in the AFC. In the middle of the season, starter Elvis Grbac sustained an injury that forced Rich Gannon into action.

Gannon guided the team to a 5-0 finish and secured home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Before the Chiefs division round game against Denver, coach Marty Schottenheimer announced that Grbac would reclaim his job for the playoffs. A team that had averaged 30 points with Gannon at the helm scored only 10 against the Broncos, and the Chiefs suffered another embarrassing home playoff loss, 14-10.

Denver went on to win the Super Bowl and Chiefs fans have second-guessed Schottenheimer’s decision ever since.

Romo may be a star quarterback, but we are seeing two young stars emerge before our eyes. If Jerry Jones wants to bring a Super Bowl and football respect back to Dallas, he should leave the aging star on the bench so that the young ones can continue to shine brightly.

After defeating the Longwood Lancers (6-7, 0-3 MidAmerican) last Saturday, Georgetown field hockey (4-9, 0-4 Big East) lost 8-0 on the road against the Liberty Eagles (5-6, 3-1 Big East) on Friday, marking the greatest margin the Hoyas have suffered so far this season.

Liberty got ahead early in the game when freshman forward Kendra Jones scored the first of her two goals after sweeping in a cross from sophomore forward Abby Julius in the third minute.

Georgetown was outshot 18-3 in the first half and 30-6 in the entire match. Georgetown’s shots came from six different Hoyas, including freshman midfielder Michaela Bruno, who is second on the team with 23 shots, trailing only sophomore Helena Masiello, who has 30.

The Flames were able to score six of its eight goals during the first half. Sophomore forward Pippa Best and junior forward Alynn Richardson contributed two goals each.

Best scored both of her goals off of crossing passes from Julius, who led the team with three assists in the match.

Despite being held scoreless again in the second half, Georgetown improved to eight shots while limiting Liberty to only two goals, the first of which came from junior midfielder Rachel Suter, who struck the ball into the right side of the goal off of an assist from senior midfielder Bethany Barr.

Freshman forward Agueda Moroni scored the Flames’ final goal during the 47th minute off another assist from Barr.

“I thought we did a good job coming out in the second half and being a little bit more proactive and denying our direct opponent the ball on the press,” Head Coach Shannon Soares said. “[This] is something we had worked to prepare for out in front of playing Liberty, but we had failed to do in the first half. I thought we did a better job of it in the second half.”

“I will tell you though that

we allowed far too many defensive circle penetrations in that entire match and second phase turnovers that just resulted in goals against for us that was a little disappointing,” Soares said.

Despite allowing Liberty to create opportunities in Georgetown’s defensive circle, the Hoyas were able to tally two defensive saves, one each from senior back Devin Holmes and sophomore back Katie Maransky. Holmes’s save was her fifth of the season.

Georgetown’s senior goalkeeper Rachel Skonecki also had a strong showing, recording a season-high 17 saves, just one save short of her career high of 18.

In preparation for its next match against Providence (103, 3-1 Big East), Georgetown has been focusing on technical development. “We’re working on a lot of one versus one defense outside the circle, two versus one defense outside the circle, and then obviously set plays within our defensive 25,”

Soares said.

This Friday, the Hoyas will face off against the Friars at home. Providence is coming off of a 2-1 overtime win against Quinnipiac (3-10, 2-2 Big East) on Oct 8. During the game, they had 11 shots on goal, four of which came from senior defender Kali Kilmer.

Despite going into overtime, Providence had an 11-6 shot advantage against Quinnipiac.

All of Providence’s Big East games have been decided by just one or two goals, and the Friars have a 3-2 away record.

However, Georgetown has won its last two home games and is pursuing its first Big East game of the season.

“We’re excited about the match against Providence.

I think it’s a great opportunity for us to create our own momentum against a strong team that is traditionally always competitive in the Big East,” Soares said.

Georgetown is set to take on Providence Friday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. at Cooper Field.

always, always, made fun of your big chain.

But you really were such a game changer.

Even when I hated you, you were so fun to watch.

With your chain peaking out from under your jersey and your gaze smug, even against some of the best pitchers in the game, you were iconic. I always held my breath when you were at the plate, because I knew there was a chance something incredibly terrible would happen — and it so often did.

You made us nervous, angry, anxious and frustrated, but we loved every second of it. Those long, drawn-out Yankees-Red Sox games were some of the best games I have ever witnessed.

Your talent was just as sturdy as those giant green pillars. You held up the rivalry just as they hold up Fenway.

And in a strange way, now that you are retiring, I kind of love you. I love the intensity you brought to the greatest rivalry in sports history. I love how hard you worked to get to where you are, and how you reminded us to never take being a member of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry for granted.

I love how much excitement you brought to the game of baseball.

I hate to admit it. I really do. But I am going to miss you.

We Yankee fans used to know the Boston lineup as thoroughly as our own, and during my fandom you were always a staple in the Red Sox’s lineup.

What I am trying to say

is that you are as much a part of my fondest baseball memories as the members of my own team, because there is no New York Yankees without the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.

You are part of the legacy of Jorge, of Petite, of Mo, of Jeter — even if you personally were on the other side of their success.

In your letter to us, the Yankees fans, you said you were the only “old man still left” of the most recent rivalry.

And you’re right. You were the rivalry. And as frustrating as it was, in a way it was beautiful, and we all loved it. And without you, it will never be the same.

Without you, it is up to the new guys: to Mookie, to Benintendi, to Bogaerts, to keep our new guys, Sanchez and Judge and Austin, on their toes.

And I’m sure the rivalry will continue with a new legacy, but your generation truly set a precedent for some of the best, most intense baseball ever played.

We hate to see you go, Papi, not because we will miss you beating us — though we will miss striking you out.

We hate to see you go because your retirement is just one more reminder that a generation of our guys is long gone, too.

Believe me. We are clinging to that nostalgia just as much as you are.

Georgetown’s first goal came after a surprising period of Villanova pressure in the first 10 minutes.

On the counterattack, Damaska found herself with the ball running into acres of space and calmly found Farrell’s run for a simple tap-in.

In a similar situation six minutes later, Damaska chose to take the opportunity herself and beat the keeper at the near post for the two-goal lead.

Corboz knows the importance of each game in the conference schedule, as only the top six qualify for the Big East Championships at season’s end.

“Villanova doesn’t have a great record right now, but they always come out and play like it’s their last game,” Corboz said.

“Every Big East game is a big game, so we know that we need to come out strong because you never know what’s going to happen … Since we started Big East [play] we’ve had trouble scoring, so

Coming out of it, it’s one that got away but you got to learn from it because you’re going to go up against a really good Lehigh team that won today as well. Looking forward to the challenge, but we’re really just worried about ourselves, we got to clean up what we are doing,” Sgarlata said.

This Saturday, the Blue and Gray begin conference play when they host the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (4-2, 1-0 Patriot League).

The Mountain Hawks are currently riding a four-game win streak and have historically been a perennial contender for the Patriot League title. Lehigh Head Coach Andy Coen is in his 10th year at the school, boasting a 72-48 record and three conference championships.

Senior quarterback Nick Shafnisky, who returns for his third straight year as the starter, leads Lehigh’s explosive offense. The Pennsylvania native is a dual threat, recording 14 touchdowns through

the air and an additional five on the ground this season.

Junior wide receivers Gatlin Casey and Troy Pelletier add speed to the offensive attack. Combined, the two 6-foot-3 players have hauled in 14 touchdown passes, including nine of 30 yards or more.

“They’re definitely going to try and challenge us with the deep ball, that’s one of their main focuses,” junior linebacker Matt Apuzzi said.

“We just have to stick to our defense, everybody has to do their job.”

Meanwhile, the Hoyas’ offense seeks to exploit a defense that has struggled to stop the run all season. The Mountain Hawks have surrendered an average of 245 rushing yards per game, including an abysmal performance against Villanova (5-1, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association), during which they allowed 396 yards. Valles emphasized that the upcoming opponent will not affect Georgetown’s scheme.

“We’re going to do what we’ve always done. We’re going to start off trying to run the ball and set up the

Though the second half played out similarly to the first, in that Villanova pressed and then the game opened up for Georgetown, Nolan was disappointed with the Hoyas’ inability to finish as strong as they started.

However, he was impressed with the substitutes who earned a substantial amount of playing time.

“Similar to the game on Sunday, when we had the chance to push home with our advantage, we didn’t. It’s hard to figure out,” Nolan said. “We’ve

pass, [the game plan] doesn’t change week by week,” Valles said.

Georgetown may be without Barnes, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained against Harvard, for a third straight game. Norris would again start under center if Barnes cannot play.

Regardless of the quarterback, the Hoyas’ offense must fix its third-down issues.

“We just have to stick to our game plan. First and second down we have to be better because we had way too many third-and-longs,” Valles said.

After consecutive losses, the conference matchup will give the team a chance to improve in the standings. Williamson, who was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after the Princeton game, stressed this week’s additional importance.

“Every game is a must-win, but especially coming off two losses. This is an inflection point for our season.

We’re looking to see what we’re really made of,” Williamson said.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Field.

Ultimately, after two 10-minute overtime periods, the score remained tied and the game ended in a draw at 1-1.

The Hoyas outshot the Golden Eagles by 17-14 and had nine corner kicks to Marquette’s three. Koscher attributed the Hoyas’ ability to keep possession to the style of the respective teams.

“They [are] a very direct team and we are a possession-based team, liking to keep the ball and [be] dangerous going from side to side on the field. We were very competitive on that end. A lot of opportunities didn’t go our way but we [gave ourselves] more opportunities,” Koscher said.

Georgetown now looks ahead to its matchup on Saturday against DePaul (6-5-2, 1-3 Big East), a team it has beaten in its last four regular season meetings. Wiese acknowledged the team’s past successes against the Blue Demons but stresses that the Hoyas need to stay focused.

“We’re certainly not underestimating DePaul this year, they are an improved team from what we’ve seen in the past. The question for this group is: Can we get the goals for some breathing room? It is going to be about managing our game the way we want to play it,” Wiese said.

Georgetown, after losing some players to injury in the last game, now has time to recover, something that Koscher feels will bolster the team’s confidence

going into the matchup.

“Getting numbers back is great for us … We have this entire week to rest and really focus. DePaul is a tough team but we’re really excited about [the game] being home, everyone is really confident,” Koscher said.

Wiese, in evaluating Saturday’s game, looked back to positives from the game against Marquette. He mentioned good play in particular from the back four, Basuljevic and junior forward Zach Knudson. “[Knudson] worked really hard to stay on point for what we asked them to do,” Wiese said. “[The coaching staff] was happy about the [team’s] mentality and discipline. Now we just need to handle a couple details a little bit better moving forward.”

Georgetown, with five out of its last six games being in conference, looks to start a streak of success to move up in the Big East standings, starting this Saturday against DePaul. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Shaw Field.

The No. 7 Georgetown women’s soccer team (11-12, 3-0-2 Big East) enjoyed a second consecutive home blowout victory on Wednesday, riding a four-goal first half to a 5-1 win over Villanova (3-11, 1-4 Big East).

The victory extends Georgetown’s unbeaten run to 12 matches, while the lone Villanova tally sees the end of a strong defensive stretch during which the Hoyas had not conceded a

goal in 748 minutes.

Again, just as in the 5-0 victory against Butler (8-52, 1-3-1 Big East) on Sunday, Georgetown started strong, putting up four goals and 10 shots by halftime; senior midfielder Grace Damaska and sophomore midfielder Caitlin Farrell — who each scored inside 20 minutes — used their pace consistently to get around the Wildcat outside backs and latch onto through balls.

“It was a typical midweek, early game,” Head Coach Dave Nolan said. “There

wasn’t a whole lot of atmosphere to it. You have to give Villanova credit; they went for it. … Then we started to do what we do well, which is get the ball wide, use our pace and create chances off that. And it just opens up the game, and people like Rachel have the chance to get on the ball.”

Despite the streak-breaking late goal by Villanova on a seemingly harmless cross, which frustrated players and coach alike, Nolan exuded praise for the team’s defensive strength and

sophomore goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman’s overall cross-claiming ability. “[Graduate student defender Marina Paul and junior defender Liz Wenger] complement each other really well,” Nolan said. “For the most part you have both your bases covered there, in that [Paul] tends to dominate in the air, and it’s very difficult to get behind us with [Wenger’s] pace. And both of our fullbacks have been doing a good job.”

ear David Ortiz, I grew up hating you.

I do not have a specific first memory of watching you play or remember the first time your talents infuriated me. But, for as long as I can remember, you were public enemy No. 1 of the New York Yankees’ fan base.

In a strange way, you were as constant in my early baseball memories as the members of my own team. You were in every Yankees vs. Red Sox highlight reel, always looming on second next to Jeter. You were always waiting in the batter’s box to hit in that dreaded cleanup spot against Mo in the ninth, threatening a blown save.

I have been fortunate enough to attend two Yankees vs. Red Sox games in Fenway Park, and I remember how the stadium would shake when your name was called. I remember how loud I would boo, hoping my small voice would

somehow deter your smooth swing and palpable intensity against my favorite pitchers.

I remember you launching baseball after baseball over that ugly, big Green Monster.

You were always the heart of a scary lineup, especially when Manny was around. I always thought of you two as a team, my two least favorite players, because, as a member of our biggest rivals, you were the players best at beating the Yankees.

The role you have played in the lives of Yankees fans is, as I said before, largely as public enemy No. 1. We did not enjoy watching you pass Mickey Mantle on the all-time homerun list. We were not pleased with your walk-off homer in the fourth game of the 2004 ALCS, but we were even less thrilled with your second 14th inning walk-off single the following game. Chances Squandered in Tie Tigers Take Down Hoyas Matthew Sachs Special to The Hoya

Failing to capitalize on a fair share of scoring opportunities, the men’s soccer team (3-7-1, 1-2-1 Big East) was held to a 1-1 draw in double overtime against the Marquette Golden Eagles (34-4, 0-2-2 Big East) on Saturday evening.

Scoring began in the 14th minute, when junior midfielder Arun Basuljevic received the ball off a corner kick and made a short pass to senior defender P.J. Koscher. Koscher shot and scored off his touch from 6 yards out to give the Hoyas an early lead. The goal was the first of Koscher’s career and gave Georgetown the initial lead for the second

straight game. “[Basuljevic] made a really great ball to me, and I took advantage of my opportunity. It was really exciting for us to get that result early on, and the momentum kept on going from there,” Koscher said.

While Georgetown maintained possession to control its lead, it still had to hold

off scoring opportunities from Marquette, including a corner kick with 15 seconds left in the first half.

The Hoyas entered halftime up 1-0.

Early in the second half, Georgetown got a chance to break the game open. Senior co-captain and forward Brett Campbell grazed the crossbar during a free kick and failed to extend the team’s lead. The score remained stagnant until the 66th minute, when a penalty kick opportunity allowed Marquette freshman midfielder Luka Prpa to bury a shot into the net and make the score 1-1.

The Georgetown football team (3-2) fell to the Princeton Tigers (3-1) 31-17 in a game that saw several changes in possession, partly due to heavy rain at Cooper Field on Saturday.

The Hoyas lost the turnover battle, committing a total of five turnovers.

Sophomore quarterback Clay Norris, who filled in for injured senior quarterback Tim Barnes, made his first start of his college career and finished 13-of-26 for 106 yards with one interception.

“Overall I think there’s a lot of stuff that we left out there and stuff we can improve on.”

Junior running back Alex Vallez rushed for 87 yards and scored one touchdown in last Saturday’s loss. an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to their special teams. Fifth-year defensive lineman Hunter Kiselick blocked Princeton freshman kicker Tavish Rice’s 42-yard field goal attempt, allowing Georgetown’s junior cornerback Jelani Williamson to collect the loose ball and return it 51 yards to score.

However, the Tigers responded quickly on the next possession to score a 1-yard rushing touchdown by junior quarterback John Lovett, knotting the game at seven in the first quarter.

After trailing 21-14 at halftime, the Hoyas got the ball to begin the second half, but their struggles to extend drives continued. For the game, the team was 1-of-12 on third down conversions and

had only 188 total yards on offense, compared to Princeton’s 414 total yards.

“I keep saying it but it’s not so much what we’re doing on third down, it’s what we’re doing on first and second [down],” Sgarlata said.

“We just have to be better on first and second downs and be more efficient,” junior running back Alex Valles, who rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown, said.
