Making Merry FREE Saturday 19 November 11.00am – 4.00pm Get into the festive spirit with choirs, workshops and shopping to delight you. Buy your favourite people the perfect gifts and adorn your house with festive favours and decorations at our unique gift fair where all items are handmade by local designermakers. With some of the regions best choirs including Ensemble 1685 and Silver Linings, FREE gift wrapping printing activities and bookable craft workshops, you're sure to delight in our festive ambience.

Scratch Choir FREE 10.30am – 3.30pm, bring lunch to share Come along and join a FREE Singing Workshop run by Una May Olomolaiye of the famous WorldSong choir. Have a new experience full of camaraderie and fun, plus, should you wish, join members of WorldSong in a rousing short performance! Booking is essential.

Victorian Christmas Family Day FREE Saturday 10 December Drop in any time between 11.00am – 4.00pm It's 1890 and Coventry is experiencing a very cold and snowy Christmas… Join us at the Herbert and be transported back to Victorian England to discover a wealth of Christmas preparations and activities. With crafts to try making including decoupage gift bags, cookery demonstrations, performances, object handling and spooky Victorian ghost stories in the medieval undercroft, there will be something to delight everyone. Mellow Christmas Saturday 17 December Workshops 1.00pm – 4.00pm £5 Storytelling 4.00pm – 4.45pm FREE A treat in the midst of the festive melee, take time out to relax and create with friends. Enjoy seasonal storytelling for grown-ups with Anne Marie Sandos, create lino cut Christmas cards with artist Kelly Merriman or make a gorgeous woven cuff with artist Anna Thorpe. Booking required for workshops.

Make Do and Mend Christmas Crafts FREE Monday 19 & Tuesday 20 December Drop in any time between 10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm Using the war time idea of 'make do and mend' as our inspiration, we’ll be making festive crafts that use recycled materials in an inventive and creative way. Content suitable for 4+ but all are welcome. At busy times you may be asked to wait.

Rare Exports Cert 15 FREE Tuesday 20 December 7.30pm – 9.00pm A film for those who think they don't believe in Santa Claus anymore. In the depths of the Korvatunturi mountain lies the closest ever guarded secret of Christmas. Uncovering this dark secret will unleash an unforeseen chain of events and Christmas will never, ever, be the same again. A creepy fantasy film in Finnish with English subtitles. Booking is essential.

Herbert Illuminations Winter from Afar FREE 20 December 12.30pm – 1.30pm An internationalist and humane talk featuring storytellers from overseas reflecting on Christmas and New Year in their home countries and in Great Britain.

Early Years Musical Christmas FREE Wednesday 21 December 10.30am & 11.30am Traditional nursery rhymes, instruments and Christmas songs for 0-5s in this live music experience led by Music Box. Older siblings are welcome to join in or just watch if they prefer. There is no need to book but if the first session is full, you may be asked to attend the second session.

Gingerbread Treats RECEIPE Make delicious gingerbread treats in the shape of Christmas trees or snowmen to decorate your own Christmas tree! 8 oz/250g plain flour 2tsp/10ml baking powder 1-2 tsps/5-10ml ground ginger 3 oz/75g caster sugar 2 tblsp/30ml treacle 1-2 tblsp/15-30ml milk 1. Sift the flour with the baking powder and ground ginger. Rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. 2. Mix in the sugar, molasses (warmed) and milk. Knead until smooth and roll out to 6mm thick. 3. Cut out shapes using a cutter or a knife. Transfer to a greased baking sheet. 4. Leave to rest in the fridge for 20-30mins. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 190° (375°/Gas 5) for 10-12 mins. 5. Transfer to a cooling rack. When cold decorate with icing.
