Value system Unda topic l,.OS ANGELES (NC) - Hollywood Catholics "have a deep commitment to their faith" despite their town's reputation for superficiality, said Father Joseph Battaglia, chairman of the annual Unda-USA convention and director of communications for the Los Angeles archdiocese.

"The people out here, especially the Catholics, have a very deep commitment to their faith," he said, citing as an example actor Kevin Dobson of the television series "Knots Landing."

Father Battaglia spoke at the convention's closing session. The Fall River diocese was represented at the meeting by John Kearns Jr., assistant to Father John F. Moore, diocesan director of communications. Unda, the Latin word for wave is the name of the 500member national association of Catholic communicators.

Dobson, the convention's keynote speaker, said that when he is acting he does not stop being a Catholic. In his roles and within professional limits, he added, he tries to mold his characters into decent human beings.

The singing Lennon Sisters also reflected on their lives and their faith in a convention appearance.

Comedian Steve Allen was given Unda's Gabriel personal Achievement Award as an individual "whose work and career have provided outstanding leadership to the broadcasting community."

"We have a certain value system that we want to convey and communicate," said Patrick DiSalvatore Unda treasurer. "And what we'r~ doing here in Los Angeles is taking the Christian values and our love of Christ to a public marketplace where there are other values, other themes, other messages. "

"Life's a cabaret"

Priests for Life get standing 0 Providing a rollicking approach to the frequently thorny pro-life issue were 10 "Priests for Life" who captivated some 800 diocesans at a recent Birthright-sponsored concert at Bishop Connolly High School. Fall River.

"Life is a cabaret" was the upbeat theme for the evening, presented

by Fathers William Baker, Richard Beaulieu, David Costa, Richard Degagne, Clement Dufour, Stephen Fernandes, Thomas Frechette. Joseph Maguire and Thomas Rita, aided by Rev. Mr. Bruce Morrill, SJ, of the Connolly faculty.

With Fat'her Costa as master of ceremonies, the group offered folk songs of the 60s, romantic ballads, show tunes, Latin and English hymns and a sing-along segment which drew enthusiastic audience participation.

The Fall River program was inspired by a similar presentation in Springfield last year. It received such a warm welcome that Janet Barbelle, regional Birthright consultant and a Greater Fall River chapter volunteer, took the idea to Father Costa, parochial vicar of' St. Thomas More parish, Somerset.

With what participants admitted were sketchy rehearsals, since it was hard for the scattered singers to get together before the program, Father Costa nevertheless coordinated a sparkling show that earned a standing ovation at its conclusion.

One Priest for Life particularly committed to the concert was Father Rita, diocesan director of the Pro-life Aposto]ate, who took the occasion to urge continued commitment to life-affirming activities.

"May God bless the work of Birthright," he said. "We recommend it to his guidance and certainly know he looks on it with love."

Thanksgiving seen as identity symbol WASHINGTON (NC)- Before carving the turkey and turning on the football game, we should take time to recall that Thanksgiving symbolizes Americans' identity as an immigrant people, says a Catholic University of America professor.

Dominican Sister Catherine Dooley, an assistant professor of religious studies, said that she is glad that Thanksgiving is not "as commercialized and frenetic as Christmas" but regrets that Americans have forgotten what "the most American holiday"celebrates.

"It is the symbol of our identity as a people. Our country's greatness lies in that Americans are an immigrant people who have individually and collectively overcome obstacles to journey to a new land and become a new people," she said.

To celebrate the holiday appropriately, Sister Dooley recommended that families gather in prayer to give thanks to God.

Nor did she let the priests depart without corralling their services for 1987. "We'll see all the priests here n"ext yea"r," she said with a twinkle in her eye. "We're looking forward to the second annual Birthright concert!"

A graduate of the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work, she was previously a caseworker at the Catholic Charitable Bureau of the Boston archdiocese. Until her present appointment, she was a clinical therapist at the Attleboro Social Services office.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (NC) The Catholic press must be "the conscience of the nation" and criticize immoral U.S. foreign policy or "we have failed in our mission," said a speaker at the recent Catholic Press Association's eastern regional conference in Providence.

The speaker, Moises Sandoval, editor of Maryknoll magazine, addressed the plight of Latin America.

About 50 Catholic press members attending the conference also heard talks on the proposed U.S. bishops' pastoral on women, antiSemitism and Catholic Relief Services.

The meeting was hosted by the Providence diocesan newspaper, The Providence Visitor. Representing The Anchor were Father John F. Moore, editor, Rosemary Dussault, business, circulation and advertising manager, and staff writer Joseph Motta.

Sandoval told" the newspaper and magazine journalists to find and report the truth about Latin America and to report on areas of the continent, such as violencescarred Guatemala, which he said have been ignored by the mainstream press.

He also called on his associates to criticize the moral positions of U.S. foreign policy, and said that the Catholic press "must be the conscience of the nation." Not to be, he added, would be to "have failed in our. mission."

Father Edward Flannery, past editor of The Providence Visitor and director of Providence's diocesan Commission of Christian-Jewish Relations, spoke on "Christian Anti-Semitism," which "is now in its 23rd century" and continuing.

Mary Brabeck, professor of psychology at Boston College and an adviser to the U.S. bishops' committee preparing the pastoral on women, spoke about development of the pastoral.

In the early 1980s, she said, the bishops realized that "women's concerns increasingly demanded attention."

Ms. Brabeck added that through work on the pastoral, "t.he understanding of Catholic women's concerns has already been enhanced through immersion, empathy, involvement and commitment."

Catholic journalists also heard a presentation on the state of Catholic Relief Services by CRS chairman Bishop Daniel Reilly of Norwich, Conn. Bishop Reilly said that the relief agency was in Ethiopia before and after Ethiopian famine relief was popular.

He added that the agency works not only to alleviate sudden catastrophes but also long-term problems and tries to eliminate causes of misery.

In response to questioning, the bishop spoke of Servite Father Lawrence Martin Jenco, director of Catholic Relief Services in Lebanon and one of the kidnapped Americans held there until his July 26 release.

"How did you keep hope while blindfolded and chained in that room?" Bishop Reilly said he asked the priest. "How do you not keep" hope?" Father Jenco answered.

"That man has a power now," the bishop said. "He's been to the mountain. He dug down inside himself and found what he was made or."

In vitro technique called wrong VATICAN CITY NC) - In vitro fertilization is morally wrong because it separates conception from the sexual act of married love, said a recent editorial in the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.

It specifically criticized the practice of fertilizing eggs in a laboratory dish, freezing them, then thawing them for implementation in a womb.

The newspaper said the editorial was sparked by recent development of the practice in Italy.

Several other countries also use the technique.

"When the church teaches that only the act of conjugal love is worthy to offer the conditions of conception, that only the body of a person is a worthy cradle of another' person, it does so because the church knows that man, every man, has infinite dignity," said the editorial.

By separating conception from conj ugallove, an embryo becomes "a perishable good," the newspaper said.

"In the case that it no longer serves, it will be thawed out and left to die," it said.

The editorial praised the desire

of sterile couples to have children, but said humanity cannot rely solely on scientific and technical criteria to solve the problem.

Using technology to' conceive human beings will only lead to enslaving humanity to technology, it said, declaring that conception must come "from the warmth of love."

The editorial came as the Vatican is preparing a major document on bioethics which is expected to include discussion of in vitro fertilization.

Viewing Thanksgiving Rightly We Americans have a lot for which to be grateful as we celebrate another Thanksgiving. We don't live in a Lebanon, Northern Ireland, Iran or Afghanistan. Our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms and rights are more or less intact. The vision of a democratic republic, although flawed, is yet viable.

Most citizens still find our land a place of opportunity and prosperity.

It is true that much remains to be done, but this does not alter the potential thousands of immigrants see in the United States.

Divisions do exist and separatists are always on the scene, but we are strong in unity and identity and present perils can often be outweighed by the bright hope of the future. Admittedly, force and violence roam the corridors of power but they are closely monitored by the upholders of peace and moderation.

This country is at peace while prepared for war, although it is'in a measure held in bondage by terrorists as it seeks to help those kept hostage.

When all is said and done, and despite our shortcomings, we certainly should come together next Thursday to thank our God. Our blessings far outweigh our flaws because of the dream that freedom offers the imprisoned, that liberty gives the chained and that rights assure the denied.

In more ways than one, we have come a long way from the mythical first Thanksgiving. The accumulation of incorrect beliefs has turned Plymouth into some kind of historical Disneyland as over the years, we have painted with a rather broad brush a fictitious portrait of our so-called Pilgrim fathers.

The first myth is that all the Pilgrims were Puritans. In fact, the Puritans were a small, powerful minority which managed to impose its beliefs and priorities on the majority. They were actually very fond of religious persecution as long as it was not directed against them and especially if it was aimed at the real dissenters, Cathofics and Quakers.

The second myth always encountered at Thanksgiving is that the Puritans were the first colonists in what is now the United States. So great was their ability to control the early media that we believe today everything we read about them.

We readily forget about a Spanish colony established in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1565, over half a century before the Mayflower found its way to the Bay State.

What about the momentous efforts of Ponce de Leon and Cabeza de Vaca and Francisco Coronado, who colonized Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma? Because they were Spanish, American history, long under Puritan influence, has blackballed them and their work as some mere popish plot to take over America, a name, after all, which is Italian in origin.

This is not an attempt to question the reality and purpose of Thanksgiving. Rather, it is an effort to bring to our festive celebration a reality of consciousness that will help us appreciate our true heritage.

Catholics might have suffered terribly at the hands of the Puritans and we may have little incommori with those who first landed on Plymouth Rock. But that is no reason to appreciate any the less the real meaning of this national festival.

We are blessed in being citizens of a land that yet dares to dream of freedom, justice and liberty for all.

Is there an image problem?

By Father Eugene Hemrick Could the image of the daffy priests and nuns portrayed on television and in the movies be a reason we have fewer religious vocations today?

After the Bing Crosby. Pat O'Brien and Spencer Tracy era of priests, is there now a backlash that discredits the religious vocation?

The,se questions were raised in a conversation I had with a vocation director who has been studying the image of priests and nuns in recent films. "Most movies," he told me, "degrade religious and make priests and nuns look. ridiculous."

It 'was his feeling that vocation directors are finding it difficult to attract young people to the religious life because of the poor representation vocations arc getting from the film industry.

Think about the advertisements in which priests and nuns are portrayed as witless idiots dressed in full clerical garb promoting some product. I think most of us would agree that religious vocations are not aided by these depictions.

And yet, how often does something similar happen with the way other occupations are portrayed in films and on television?

How many times do the police look ridicl:1ous in a car chase with

a James Bond type outwitting them? How many movies have we sat through in which military generals came off as egotistical lamebrains incapable of leading themselves, let alone an army?

The medical and legal professions frequently are represented by fun-loving characters who use their careers more for their own personal fun than service, nor do parents fare well. Most often they're portrayed as just not with it.

One has to wonder why the world of entertainment thinks idiots are entertaining. Can it perhaps be justified as an effective way of countering the increasing tensions of our times?

Speaking of our times, I question whether the Bing Crosby "Going My Way" movies, or the Spencer Tracy Father Flanagan portrayals would be as popular now as they were in their heyday.

Would the church attract more vocations if priests once again were portrayed as crooners, or tough, outspoken men capable of winning over the roughest kid on the block?

I think not. The times have changed and so has the need for new images of the religious life.

Perhaps the best way to attract vocations is to show our youth a documentary on some of our unsung heroes in the religious life.

How about a walk through a hospital filming sisters in the role of nurse, counselor and chaplain ministering to the terminally ill, comforting the bereaved and whispering words of encouragement to the sick.

A visit to an inner-city parish might be next on the agenda. There youths might be surprised to find a spirit of sharing among priests, nuns and parishioners that is more attractive than anything they have ever experienced.

The documentary might focus on the happiness a religious brother, sister or priest experiences in teaching religions; or that a priest derives from delivering a homily or heari,ng confessions; or that a sister gains when she counsels a person in need.

Hundreds of other scenarios could be developed by an insightful film producer.

The possibility of so many beautiful scenarios leads me to doubt whether adverse images of religious life are hindering religious vocations. Could it rather be that we priests. sisters and religious brothers are not defining our roles well enough?

Put another way, is commercial competition destroying religious vocations, or are those with a religious vocation failing to insist that they be adequately portrayed in films and on television?

Pilgrims & Indians This is the time of year I watch excited kindergarteners go by my home clad in paper feathers and beating oatmeal tom-toms. These would-be Indians wear necklaces fashioned of clumsily painted macaroni strung by little hands.

It's a good time of year to live by a school and it brings back warm memories of the excitement of our three at that age. The unit and little skits on the first Thanksgiving result in stories retold at family table and colorful drawings of the feast.

I suspect frazzled kindergarten teachers have a different perspective, but there's something about the story of the Pilgrims and Indians sharing food and friendship that appeals to our nostalgia and wistfulness. Why? Because we know what happened later, our sordid history of immigrant-~ativeAmerican relationships.

I feel this more deeply this Thanksgiving because Jim and I visited the Navajo canyon lands in Arizona last summer. They are breathtaking, historic and arid, as we realized when we saw families trying to scratch out a living on the dry riverbed of Canyon de Chelley.

Unemployment, alcoholism, abuse, crime and hunger are con-

ditions the relatives of those first Thanksgiving Native Americans find on the land "reserved" for them.

Our Navajo guide, a gentle veteran of World War Two, gave us his people's history as he pointed out petroglyphs and ancient ruins. It was the sad, familiar tale of broken treaties and forced movement to some of the poorest agricultural limd in the country.

As we and others on the tour listened, we became more and more uncomfortable. Reading about lessthan-honorable history is one thing: seeing the results another.

But what made it most uncomfortable was that our vacation coincided with Liberty Week. During the day we walked with the Navajos. At night, we turned on television to hear of the glories of immigration.

It's fair to say that Native Americans don't have a warm nostalgia路 for the Statue of Liberty and immigration history. They were the losers in the situation.

What does all this have to do with Thanksgiving? Well, that giving thanks for what we have isn't complete unless we give others a chance to be thankful, too. Especially others, who, our kindergarteners remind us, reached out a hand in friendship.

By sheer coincidence, I happened to read excerpts from Cardinal Newman's correspondence on this while flying from Honolulu to San Francisco on the last leg of my first trip to the Far East. So great is my respect for his wisdom that I initially took his words to heart, but then decided, respectfully, that I couldn't go along with him.

Unlike Cardinal Newman, I did not long to be back in my native land, but would have been more than willing to turn around in San Francisco and leave it again. Nor had I experienced any sense of

I don't mean to instill guilt for what was done to Native Americans in the past. The rest of us were not here when their lands were appropriated.

But there's new fear of broken treaties for the Navajos. Now that oil and minerals have been discovered under their parched soil, greedy eyes are turning toward it.

Opinions are being voiced to the effect that the Navajos own the land but not the rights to what lies below.

When asked about this, ourNavajo guide nodded. "Yes, we are worried." And smiled, "But we have our own lawyers now."

We weren't responsible for what happened earlier but we are now.

If we allow yet another treaty to be broken and land to be stolen in the interest of greed without protesting, we are no better than those who stole land in earlier times. In honor of Thanksgiving, Pilgrims and Indians, we might pledge to support the Navajos in having something to be thankful for - finally.

Bishop John Cummins of Oakland, Calif., was the U.S. bishops' observer at a recent meeting of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences in Tokyo. Upon his return, the bishop urged more of his colleagues to visit and study Asia.

"Asia is half the world. We just cannot be oblivious to what is happening. Religious orders and societies are very familiar with the Asian scene, but that familiarity does not float into the bishops or into the major life of the church," he said.

I dare say that Cummins' advice would have made little sense to most bishops 100 years ago. The overwhelming majority of bishops at the First Vatican Council in the late 19th century were from Europe and North America. But at the.

Second Vatican Council in the 1960s Asian, African and Latin American bishops were present in greater numbers. At the 1985 Synod of Bishops in Rome they were in the majority.

It is imperative, then, as Bishop Cummins went on to suggest, that U.S. - and he might have added European - bishops get to know the rest ofthe world on a firsthand basis, not as tourists but as concerned, committed pastors.

So rapidly have the world and the church changed that Bishop Cummins' advice would, I suspect, have bewildered one of the 19th century's greatest Catholic leaders, Cardinal John Henry Newman. He was 31 when he took his first trip abroad, to Italy. By then, says one of his biographers, he was so settled in his habits and so deeply attached to England, and more especially Oxford, that he never wanted to leave it again.

One of my main impressions from traveling in that part of the world is one I should have arrived at by studying an atlas at home namely, that distances have shrunk to the point where we do in fact live in a small global village. This trite observation was brought home to me dramatically whenever I stopped to consider that it used to take almost as long to go from Washington, D.C., to Chicago by rail as it now takes to go from Washington to the farthest regions of Asia by plane.

But learning geography is one of the least important benefits of traveling. The main reason why all concerned about the future of the Church ought to learn more about the rest of the world is that without such firsthand knowledge we will be illprepared to serve the millions of Catholics coming to the United States in a new and massive wave of immigration, not only from Asia but from almost every other region of the world as well.

Pope's Trip to U.S.

Thanksgiving Day preface due for rewrite WASHINGTON (NC) - The preface of the Thanksgiving Day Mass celebrated in the United States will be rewritten-to respond to complaints that it does not reflect the experience or-minority groups.

The preface will not be available until 1991 or 1992, said Father John Gurrieri, executive director of the U.S. bishops' Committee on the Liturgy. At that time a new edition of the sacramentary, prayers for Mass and other rites, is scheduled to be published.

"A lot of people have complained about the preface for years," said the priest. The preface is the prayer preceding the Sanctus of the Mass.

One phrase objected to: "It happened to our fathers, who came to this land as if out of the desert into a place of promise and hope."

Cleveland Auxiliary Bishop James P. Lyke noted, "This statement excludes many Americans.

Black people did not come to this land 'as if out of the desert into a place of promise and hope.' They came on slave ships, kidnapped from their rich and beautiful native land.

"Native Americans are not included in this preface either. The fathers who came 'as if out of the desert' disenfranchised our native sisters and brothers, and slaughtered them," he said.

Bishop Lyke, one of 10 U.S. black bishops, said the theology of the Thanksgiving Day preface seems to link the genuine experience of salvation found in Exodus with a "19th-century theology of manifest destiny and the 'white man's burden' of colonialism."

Synod conferences seen as vital LIVONIA, Mich. (NC) Bringing lay people together in consultations for the October 1987 world Synod of Bishops on the laity is vital to the Catholic Church's future, says Dolores Leckey, executive director of the U.S. bishops' laity secretariat.

Speaking at Madonna College, Livonia, she said "After the synod we're still going to have the church and we're going to need the people's awareness and consciousness that have been raised. The synod meetings are only one piece of the process and as far as I'm concerned not the most important."

She said she was not minimizing the importance of the upcoming synod but believes "the major part of the synod process is happening right now" with the consultations.

The views of lay Catholics across , the United States forthe synod are being sought this fall and winter, with lay ministry in the church and the world, the role of women and the needs of youth among topics on which they will be asked to . comment.

Lay ministry "is the big story in the church today," Mrs. Leckey said, noting that people seeking lay ministry training do so "not to pursue a career in the church but for their own personal growth."

Pope John Paul on longest-ever trip

By NCNews Leaving Rome on Tuesday, Pope John Paul II is on the first leg of a 12-day marathon trip to Asia, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

The trip will cover more miles than any previous papal trip.

The pope was in Bangladesh Wednesday, where he offered Mass, preached and ordained priests at Ershad Stadium in Dacca. Later

in the day he met with laity, priests, religious, the bishops of the nation and national leaders.

New leaders at Notre Dame NOTRE DAME, Ind. (NC) University of Notre Dame trustees have elected Holy Cross Father Edward A. Malloy, associate provost, to succeed Holy Cross Father Theodore M. Hesburgh as president of the university.

Father Malloy, 45, will not take office as the 16th president until Father Hesburgh retires after commencement exercises in May 1987.

Father Hesburgh, 69, has headed Notre Dame for 35 years, a longer term than any other U.S. university president.

A specialist in the ethics of sexuality, war and peace, crime and punishment and biomedical issues, Father Malloy has studied and taught at Notre Dame. He also played basketball for the Fighting Irish.

Alluding to present difficulties in the Uoited States such as the case of Father Charles Curran,

who has been told by the Vatican that he is not "suitable" to teach as a Catholic theologian, Father Malloy called it "an interesting time to become a leader in Catholic education."

"Catholic universities have always been the place where the church does its thinking," Father Malloy said. He pointed out that at one time St. Thomas Aquinas was "on the outs" with church officials but that his system of thought has become predominant in the philosophy of the church.

Cardinal acts to limit dowries VATICAN CITY (NC) - Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga of Kampala, Uganda, says he will refuse to give communion to parents who prevent their daughters from marrying by asking too high a dowry, reported Vatican Radio.

In Uganda a dowry, usually in money or animals, is given to the bride's parents, sa.id Vatican Radio.

The cardinal was quoted as saying, "In my church holy communion will be refused to all parents who impede their daughters from marriage by asking an excessive dowry."

Synod input asked here' In preparation for the 1987 World Synod of Bishops on the laity, to be held at the Vatican next October, dioceses throughout the world are seeking input from lay Catholics.

In the Fall River diocese, Bishop Daniel A. Cronin has asked pastors to consult parishioners on "their experience, needs and ideas regarding their own vocation and mission in the Church in the world."

The pastors are asked to select an appropriate method of consultation, using guidelines developed by the U.S. Bishops' Committee on the laity.

Among topics to be discussed are the place of laity in the family, workplace, the civic and cultural arenas, the parish and the world at large. Respondents will be asked in which areas they feel most and least conscious of Christian commitment.

Also to be explored are needs perceived in the areas of adult religious education and spiritual formation, positive and negative aspects of lay ministry and the role of diocesan and parish councils.

Respondents will also be asked if they feel that women have a unique contribution to make to the Church and whether they think women need "particular ministry or affirmation from the institutional Church."

Suggestions as to how the Church can respond to the needs of youth are sought, as are opinions on the value of "small communities of faith."

Bishop Cronin asked that parish findings be returned to Msgr.

Dear Editor: Having arrived early at the Family Life Center for a Legion of Mary retreat, I visited the chapel, , and witnessed a most inspiring scene. The football players were coming into the chapel each at dif~ ferent times for their private prayer before tQeir game. It.gave me hope iMhHO\I,th Qf today. For'those of you who have seen the chapel at Bishop Stang High School, imagine seeing football players in their uniforms ready for the game, kneeling in prayer before the tabernacle, which is backed by a stained glass wall depieting Our .Lord and his disciples at the Last Supper.

Heartbreaking Dear Editor: 1 could not help noting in The Anchor (Nov. 7) that your special statement on the heartbreaking conclusion to be drawn from the defeat of Question One on the state ballot appeared alongside a syndicated column detailing the recently-issued Vatican document on homosexuality.

Having no homosexual orienta~ tion myself, I nevertheless find it also heartbreaking that the Church I have loved all the years of my life should see no inconsistency in upholding the rights of the unborn while denying the civil rights of the homosexual.

If, as the column indicates, homosexuals who "seek to follow the Lord"should be encouraged to practice self-denial in the name of the cross, is there any justice in adding to their, burdens. by opposing antidiscrimination legislation in the areas of employment and housing'! Yet this is what the document would appear to advn;cate.

How-can we love the Lord whom -we cannot see ifwe do not love our neighbor whom we do see?

WASHINGTON (NC) - As the U.S. bishops met for four days in Washington, discussion and passage of their economics pastoral shared the spotlight with a lengthy closed-door session on U.S.-Vatican relations with the focus on Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen, whose authority was curtailed by Rome.

On a quieter level, the bishops' days included elections and debates and votes on several action items involving liturgy, human rights and plam and priorities.

Archbishop John L. May orSt. Louis, NCCB vice president. was elected president. Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk of Cincinnati was elected vice president.

Other highlights of the four-day bishops' meeting included: - Announcement of plans to send a delegation of U.S. bishops to meet with the pope this winter or spring 10 discuss the pope's 1987 visit to the United States.

- The release of a report on a three-year Vatican-mandated study on U.S. Religious.

- A report by Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly of Louisville, Ky., chairman of an ad hoc committee on the 1987 papal trip. who said limited dialogue during the vi~il between Catholics and the pope is possible.

The 54,OOO-word pastoral letter, "Economic Justice for All: Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy," which was six yelUs in the making, was approved 225-9. .The bishops simultaneously B~ proved an accompanying pastoral message urging Catholics and all Americans to work to aclhieve' economic rights for everyone.

The bishops spent more than five hours in executive ses.sion, most _of it discussing the Aunthausen situation. No report from the meeting itself was given, but afterward Bishop Mal<)Re said that church rules and procedures; had been followed in the Vatican's dealings with the archbishop and the bishops had no authority to intervene.

Bishop Delaney is. completing the term of Archbishop Pilarczyk, who gave up the post when he was elected NCCB vice president.

The bishops rejected by 121 to 112 approval of the firs,t eucharistic prayer composed in the Englillh language. It would have become the 10th eucharistic prayer available for use in English~language Masses in the United States. The other nine are translated from fordgn languages.

By overwhelming margins they approved a new set of rites and rules for converts entering the church, in five related votes, setting in motion a five~year plan to expand, develop and refine the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

A uniform Spanish·language translation of the Mass was approved by a 243-t04 vote.

They also agreed by a narrow margin to return a statement on general absolution to theCommittee on Canonical Affairs for more work.

Resolutions supporting hllman rights in Lithuania and Lebanon were passed.

The bishops set doctrine, justice, education. vocations. minis· terial development and catechetical ministry as top priorities for the USCC-NeCD in 1988-90 in a list of 36 objectives. The others concerned such matters as educa~ tion, involvement of the laity in church life and social justice.

They also voted to establish a standing committee and an NCCD office for black Catholics and to make permanent the ad hoc committee on Hispanic Affairs.

-1n other action, the U.S. bishops also approved a J8-page pastoral statement on the foreign missions called "To the Ends of the Earth."

A $26.5 million budget was a~ proved for 1987 and dioceses were called on to contribute 13.3 cents

per Catholic during 1988 to help fund the bishops' national programs.

Last year the bishops budgeted $26.9 million for 1986.

The 1988 per eapita assessment is the same as for 1986 and 1987.

When boys dress like girls

By Dr. James and Mary Kenny Dear Dr. Kenny: I have a friend who would like her 4-year-old son to play with my S-ye.r-old son more. She'describes him as "difâ&#x20AC;˘ ferent"from her younler children.

I have noticed lhal be likes 10 dress up as a girl when our play group meets.

I realize it is a mistake 10 slereoIype boys and lirls. bat chis worries me. I do not wanl to reject tbis boy, but I do not want my child influenced in the wrong direcCion.

My husband and I have decided I will teach my son at home the fine year ort"o. I am aware of the need 10 avoid overprotecling him since he is our only child. Now my friend has asked me to teach her !Ion with mine. What do you think?

You raise several problems.

Should a boy be dressing in girls' clothes? Should you allow your son to play with a boy like that?

Should you teacb the two oftbem?

Let's take the Questions one at a time.

I gatherfrom the reaction ofthe boy's mother that they have not encouraged him to dress up like a girl. He does this on his own. It would help to know why. Is he

simply being ornery? Silly'? Or does he feel female?

The role of the woman is learned.

Many traits normally considered feminine ate attractive in either sex. These include gentieRess, artistic inclinations and enjoymeflt of reading. They should be encouraged in both sexes.

Other sex differences are physiological. Mell, due to hormonal differences, are generally more active and aggressive.

Perhaps you and the boy's mother can encourage him [0 participate in more vigorous games. See that he bas young adult male role models. like a Big Brother. Give him opportunities to play with othrr boys his age.

J would not forbid him to dress like a girl. I would ignore this.

Failing to respond in any way to some action is the best way in the long run to get rid of it.

Should you allow your son to play with this boy? Unless behavior is clearly dangerous OT immoral, I let my children choose their playmates. Since this behavior is neit~er, my answer is yes.

Your son will not be led to a homosexual lifestyle because he associates with a boy who dresses like a girl on occasion. However,

he might learn to be selfish and bigoted if you teach him that some people, because they are "different," should be avoided. Besides, parents are never too successful at trying to arrange friendsbips .

Should you teach the two at home? It sounds as though tbis other boy needs the socialization experience_of being around a number of young children. If he con~ tinues to be relatively isolated in a classroom of two children, the difference gap may increase.

Children of all sizes, colors, persuasions and mental differences have a lot to offer. Sometimes we parents may feel they are leading our own child astray. Bu! mostly they bave much to learn {rom one another.

You may want to rethink your plan to isolate your child from his peers. As an only child, he may be fUMber handicapped to join the "group" late. Perhaps there is some way you can provide what you wish him to have and still allow him to interact with others his age._ Good luck!

A memory for Thanksgiving

Antique instrument museum MILWAUKEE (NC) - Father Robert Novotny is pUl'$uing what might be called a truly noteworthy goal. .

The Milwaukeepastorwill spend a four-month sabbatical in Vienna, Austria, researching antique musical instruments with the aim of eventually establishing a museum of such instruments in Wisconsin.

"My viJion is to help found a museumwrucb would enable musicians to ex.amine early instruments as well as to play those which would sustain playing," he said. ' The priest credits a grade--school music teacher. the late Mayme Gruber. with inspiring him. He kept in touch with her over the years, renewing direct contaf;t after his ordination in 1950. He began serious piano studies at Alvemo CoJlege, and his former teacher got him his first piano.

Father Novotny carned a music degree from Alverno and later a IDBSter'sdegree in musicology from Catholic University of America.

He then taught music for several years at St. Francis de Sales College in Milwaukee before retum~ ins to parish work.

For 30 years he has been colleetlag pianos, now owning 15, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries.

During a visit to Vienna two years ago, the seeds of Father Novotny's present plan were sown.

Searching for a 19th century piano made by the Johannes B. Streicher f.mily, he requested help at the National Museum. There he met Alphonse Huber, an assistant curatOr, who took an interest in hi, search and introduced him to museum direetor Gerhard Stf8:dner.

Father Novotny will be some-thing of an apprentice during his four months, studying old Viennese parish records in an effort to a locate piano-making families translating the museum's catalog of keyboard instruments into Eng-.. lish. .

He also anticipates assistin8 museum workers when they take in~ struments out of storage, clean them and prepare thern for exhibit.

Many instruments cannot be played, said the priest, because the museum is reluctant to replace the original parts in order to put them into playing condition. But he rioted that new technolo,sy can make reproductions of instruments that come closer to the original sound thaD would a restoration.

Father Novotny's dream of a Wisconsin museum may materialize after his visit to Vienna. Several private colleetors are willing to exhibit their instruments with his at an arts museum in Milwaukee to generate interest in the project.

' My father also loved sio8ing and my introduction to opera was another gift from him. He took Rosemary and me to see "La Traviata" when I was 15. I'll never forget that evening. The conductor, Nicholas Rescigno, was young and gorgeous. My sister and I were so excited by the magic of the opera that we slipped down after the second act to empty first row seats which he had to pass to get back to the podium. Rescigno smiled at us and when he picked up his baton to conduct again he bowed to us gallantly.

Impressed? I never forgot his name or that evening or the music.

At my father's funeral, my brother Joe gave a eulogy. He talked

I was listening to my opera student daughter sing and it recalled the music in my home as I was growing up. I was only 7 when my father came home from work one day and excitedly told us that he had a wonderful surprise. He was getting us a piano.

This was in the Great Depres~ sian era and somehow my father, who only made $35 a week as a butcher, had managed to save the cost ofa secondhand piano - 525.

Three days before the piano was to be delivered my father waited on a customer, an old woman whosepurchasecameto$l. Embar~ rassed, she asked my father if he could cut her meat by a few ounces to make it come to 90 cents. All she had was $1 and she needed a dime for the bus home.

My father gave her the full package and charged her the lower price. She thanked bim and when she turned away he took a dime out of bis own pocket to make up the difference.

When my brother asked. "Who sang the first song?" tears welled up in me aloD8 with gratitude to my father. My brother's question peeled away 50 yeats. I again felt sorry about the lost piano but I felt something deeper too - an empathy for tbe young immigrant so drawn to music that he was willing to spend the little money he could save on a piano to pass on his love for music to us.

At the same time, he put a greater importance on the pervasive harmony that all humans share - namely the caring shared with a stranger who needs ~ dime.

Lebanese Christians feel "abandoned," priest says

"Time to think and pray"

WASHINGTON (NC) - Lebanese Christians feel "abandoned" by the world, the director of Lebanon's Catholic Center for Information recently said.

"We are neglected; we are abandoned," said Father Antoine Gemayel, the center's director. He also said that Christians "are not fighting; we are defending ourselves. "

By Joseph Motta Sister Ruth Curry, SUSC, a busy lady working for both the Diocesan Office of Family Ministry and the diocesan Family Life Center, was a teacher for 36 years.

But no more. The Holy Uniqn sister now dedicates her days to "a conglomeration of jobs" at the North Dartmouth diocesan office and facility, and has lots of fun doing it.

Her responsibilities include directing the Family Life Center's resource library, managing its gift shop, serving as "housemother" to weekend retreatants and coordinating the center's successful Retreat for Religious program.

"My work is very interesting," the Fall River native said. "I meet a lot of wonderful people who work very hard for the Lord. We've got a lot of devoted people in the diocese. The office couldn't get alOllg without them."

Educated at Fall River's former Sacred Heart School and Sacred Hearts Academy, Sister Curry holds a bachelor's degree from the former Providence Catholic Teachers College and a master's degree in education with a specialization in reading from the University of Rhode Island.

Always a first grade teacher, she was one of three Holy Union sisters to open Taunton's former St. Joseph School, and later worked at that city's St. Mary Primary School and former Sacred Heart School. After years of teaching at institutions in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, she returned to her home city to teach at Holy Name School for 13 years.

Sister Curry noted that she has known her "good friend," Father Ronald A. Tosti, director of both the Diocesan Office of Family Ministry and the Family Life Center, "since his elementary school days." , , Before joining the Family Life Center staff fulltime in July, 1983, Sister Curry was a weekend retreat housemother and spent her summers cataloging the center's resource library.

Taunton hospice names director Hospice of Greater Taunton has announced appointment of Sister M. Thomas More, O.P. as executive director. Sister More brings to the organization a diverse background in health care practice and administration.

She has lectured widely on the hospice concept, euthanasia, the terminally ill arrd psychological preparation for caregivers for the terminally ill.

A graduate of the former St. Anne's Hospital School of Nursing in Fall River, she holds bachelor's and master's degrees in science from Boston College.

She was named 1976 Woman of the Year by the Attleboro Area Business and Professional Women's Club and has been recognized by other professional groups for contributions to long-term care institutions.

Sister More was previously administrator of Madonna Manor, North Attleboro and ,assistant executive director of St. Anne's Hospital.

The Maronite Catholic priest said Lebanese do not want to be treated "as terrorists." Lebanese are the victims of outside forces, he said, with people from Syria, Iran, Libya and the Soviet Union using about 5 percent of the Lebanese people to fight.

"Weare the victims of terrorists in Lebanon," Father Gemayel said in Washington.

Sister Curry has sent catalogs listing its holdings to all dioces~n pastors, religious education directors and parish family ministry leadership couples.

Last February, she coordinated the Family Life Center's first Retreat for Religious. Retreats will again be offered Feb. 16 to 20 and June 28 to July 2. They are open to sisters of all orders.

"All religious orders mandate that their members make one major retreat per year," Sister Curry said.

"The retreat offers time to think and pray. It's one of the greatest things available to a sister."

23 nuns attended the first retreat last February with retreat master Father Jim Murphy, CSc. A maximum of 25 religious can be accommodated for a retreat, with each having her own room, a feature conducive to a positive experience.

"The sisters considered the Family Life Center's atmosphere 'homey,' "Sister Curry said. While enjoying the center's garden lounge, library, chapel and other facilities, she said, many kept silence as a matter of personal choice.

Several of last year's retreatants have registered for the next Retreat for Religious, Sister Curry added.

The friendly nun encourages everyone, religious or lay, to consider making a religious retreat.

"Your body needs a vacation," she said, "but your soul needs one, too. Find yourselftime to take out for God. If you really want to, you can."

WASHINGTON (NC) - A Chilean Catholic human rights agency said in messages to groups in Washington that it is facing increasing threats and intimidation.

The Santiago archdiocese's Vicariate of Solidarity said workers began receiving death threats just before a Sept. 7 assassination attempt against President Augusto Pinochet. Soon after, a group believed to support Pinochet threatened a vicariate attorney. In earlier incidents, the home of the agency's executive secretary, Enrique Palet, was splashed with blood and a guard was wounded seriously. ' .

Father Gemayel said he accompanied Cardinal John O'Connor of New York when the cardinal made a three-day trip to Lebanon in June. Cardinal O'Connor, president of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, witnessed 14 people living in one small room and saw a lady picking food from the trash.

Christians and Moslems have been fighting in Lebanon for II years. A main cause of the fighting, which has left more than 100,000 people dead, is the Moslem demand for revision of the current distribution of political power, which favors Christians.

By law, the president of Lebanon must be a Maronite Catholic, and Christians hold a majority of seats in the parliament and top military posts.

Lebanon's 3 million population is about evenly divided between Moslems and Christians.

"What makes questions of dissent all the more complicated in our local church is the passion we have in this country to let all persons have the freedom to give their point of view. As citizens we would die to protect this freedom of speech," Bishop Malone said without mentioning Father Curran.

The bishop noted that U.S. Catholics must also "defend the revelation given us in Christ and the church's responsibility to con-

For him then, the issue of dissent is not framed solely in terms of preserving church teachings. It is also a nuanced question of "how can the church ensure the stability of its teachings while at the same time encouraging that freedom of conversation which. even in theological terms. makes for testing and development?"

Bishop Malone's proposal of a meeting between the pope and a delegation of U.S. bishops is not without precedent.

Last March the pope invited 21 Brazilian bishops to a three-day summit meeting with him and 10 top Vatican officials to thrash out a serie~ of troublesome issues.

The closed-door meeting allowed for frank discussion~ and provided a practical mechanism to argue how church responsibility should be shared in concrete circumstances.

A similar meeting with a delegation of t .S. bishops could set a trend in Vatican dealings with bishops. Such meetings would give the pope and bishops a formalized structure to get beyond their common ground in doctrinal collegiality.

Land reform urged SAO PAULO. Brazil (NC) Pope John Paul II has urged the Brazilian Catholic Church to push for land reform. Brazilian Bishop Jose Ivo Lorscheiter, recently in Rome, said the pope told him that "the church must make sure that the agrarian reform in Brazil is not a failure, because it is a question of social justice and democracy."

In its resolutions, the conference went beyond social justice to deal with sexual morality and church authority, and media reports that "exaggerated" these aspects "scared" the bishops, he said. "It was clear the more conservative bishops saw trouble down the road if this process went on unhindered. " The Detroit meeting was the "most representative" such gathering ever held by the U.S. Catholic Church, Steinfels said, but paradoxically "not very representative. " Some two-thirds of the delegates were employed by the church in one capacity or another.

A litany of Thanksgiving

By Cecilia Belanger Here are some Thanksgiving comments by contributors ranging in age from 4Y2 to 89: - I am a gardener and I thank God for my flowers.

- Birds are my friends and I thank them for their songs.

- There's a 3-year-old down the street who always greets me with a smile. Thanks, little ray of sunshine.

- I've lived 89 years. Each day is a gift and I hope to make the most of it.

- My grades are getting better and I say "thanks."

- I got a new job this week and boy, am I thankful for that!

- I'm thankful for my friends who put up with me and take me as I am.

- Thank God for good health and for each day of peace.

- I made peace with a friend after 10 years of alienation. I thank the Holy Spirit.

- I thank parents who told me early in life to be an individual and not to melt in with the masses. It has helped me more than I can say.

- I am thankful for a land that gives people my age a chance to get an education for nothing or a few dollars.

- I'm glad there's something to work for. I couldn't stand too much leisure!

Bishop Connolly To celebrate Thanksgiving, students at Bishop Connolly High School, Fall River, will financially assist St. George High School, a Jesuit institution in Kingston, Jamaica, where over a third of the students are severely malnurished.

For example we need to wait to find the right person. This means being open to dating several people, particularly during the high school years. Much is gained from waiting to go steady.

The timing of a new relationship also is important. Real love brings"new demands on our time and feelings. Consequently, beginning a new relationship while we are starting college, moving or facing some other transition in life puts stress on both people. At times, we need to wait and consider such factors before entering a new relationship.

Waiting can be important in determining how we express our feelings. Love needs time and. space. Taking the time to honestly share each person's hopes and expectations helps build trust.

Those who refuse to do this leave themselves open to future pain and rejection.

Sometimes waiting may take the form of separation. Two people may realize that they are not ready for commitment. In such situations, choosing not to see each other for a time is the best decision. Such a choice gives both individuals the chance to be themselves and discover more of what they currently need from life.

Certainly falling in love is a zestful, exciting experience. While we may feel that we "can't wait" until this happens, the best way to build a lasting love is to wait until-we are ready for its demands and commitment.

Faith without form?

FAITH WITHOUT FORM: BELIEFS OF CATHOUC YOUTH, by E. Nancy McAuley and Moira Mathieson. Sheed and Ward (Kansas City, Mo., 1986).166 pp., $8.95.

Reviewed by William Droel Although the largest portion of the American church's operating budget goes to the education of youth, this study, "Faith Without Form," says "there is nothing specifically Catholic or even Christian" in the vague approach to faith taken by U.S. Catholic high school seniors surveyed.

The survey covered 784 seniors from 10 Catholic high schools in Washington, D.C. Authors E. Nancy McAuley and Moira Mathieson wonder "how these graduates of Catholic high schools will be able to remain faithful to a religion which they see as so formless, with so little definition, without a clear, valuable and attractive identity to which they can relate."

First the bad news. The students "tended toward an oversimplified concept of God, as someone or, something that is out there." Few spoke at all of Jesus.

The students were generally unknowledgeable about church doctrine and history. They were hostile or, more commonly, indifferent to church authority. They defined "sin according to· their own desires and convenience."

Morality was overly subjective.

Students did not give much importance to community worship in formal settings. Only 52 percent attended weekly worship.

There is some good news. The students "had not turned their' backs on God," said the authors.

95 percent said they prayed, 48 percent at least once a day. The students were not selfish. They named "helping people in need" as more important than "a high

income, a nice home, car and other belongings" and more important than "a lot of leisure time." By some measures, today's youth have a great deal of faith, the writers say. However, it lacks specific content; it is "faith without form."

My high school teaching and campus ministry experiences validate several of the recommendations made by Ms. McAuley and Ms. Mathieson. "Promote youth retreats.... Although no survey question or interview cue asked about retreats, the students brought them up again and again, with enthusiasm." These retreats must be well-planned and solidly conducted, the authors noted. The students were not impressed with social outings organized by youth ministers.

Secondly, "improve the quality of religious instruction Emphasize solid theology Include courses on church history." As the authors accurately comment, "if teachers have a poor understanding of church doctrine and are themselves confused and uncertain, they will not be able to convince their inquiring and skeptical students,.". ' This will mean, thirdly, more and better adult education. The church too often tries to teach children, while playing with adults - the opposite of Jesus' educational method.

Ms. McAuley and Ms. Mathieson make other practical suggestions, including "church involvement in such organizations as M others Against Drunk Driving and Students Against Drunk Driving. SO,cial causes concern not merely economics and peace."

This book will assist Catholic school teachers, youth ministers, campus and young adult ministers and concerned parents. I highly recommend it.

New Films "Brighton Beach Memoirs" (Universal) - This lighthearted examination of a Jewish adolescent boy's coming of age in 1937 in Brooklyn upholds traditional family values while finding humor in the young boy's struggle with the onset of puberty. Some discussion of masturbation and adolescent sexuality and use of a nude postcard as a sight gag. A3, PG 13 "Nobody's Fool" (Island) Rosanna Arquette is a young and simple girl abandoned by her boyfriend when she becomes pregnant.

She finds, very cautiously, her selfrespect in a gentle friendship with a local theater's stage director(Eric, Roberts) whose love frees her from smalltown doldrums and obscurity. Mildly suggestive sexuality and one instance of violence make this less suitable for the very young.

A2, PGI3 "Quiet Cool"(New Line Cinema) - The brutal slaying of a peaceloving family acting out the 1960s ideal of living close to nature is the plot rationale for violent and vengeful execution of young toughs growing marijuana outside a California mountain town. Crude and bloody events teach no lessons. only encourage the vigilante spirit in youngsters. 0, R "Soul Man" (New World) This disappointing comedy fails as insightful social satire by emphasizing youthful promiscuity and sexual themes, superficial issues of prejudice and an affirmation of . the aspirations of youthful conservatives for power and money.

Among the religious activities visited is a street ministry run by two nuns who aid thousands of hungry and homeless people. Cardinal Evaristo Arns, Franciscan theologian Father Leonardo Boff, Bishop Pedro Casaldaliga and 'retired Bishop Helder Pessoa Camara are interviewed. ~eligious Radio Sunday, Nov. 23 (NBC) "Guideline" - Jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck discusses his religious music.

Numbers drop WASHINGTON (NC) - The number of U.S. Catholic seminarians dropped 4 percent from 1985,86 to the 1986-87 school year, according to just-released data.

For 1986-87 there are 10,372 seminarians, compared to 10,811 last year. The new figure represents a 43 percent decline in the past decade and a 76 percent decline over the past 20 years. 1n 1966-67 there were 42,767 students preparing for the priesthood, and in 1976-77 the number was 18,029. Th<; new figures, based on starting enrollments this fall, came from the Washington-based Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.
