AIDS an all-consu'ming concern in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (NC) - In -some San Francisco parishes, prayers at Mass for AIDS patients are as common as prayers for Pope John Paul II and the city's Archbishop John R. Quinn.

At Most Holy Redeemer Parish, in the city's' world-famous homosexual Castro district, the annual 40 Hours devotion is a healing service that attracts many persons with acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

A former convent in the parish is a hospice for AIDS patients in the last stages of the fatal disease, which has devastated the gay community.

AIDS is an all-consuming concern in San Francisco. Urged by Archbishop Quinn, the pope will meet with AIDS patients Sept. 17 at Mission Dolores. The meeting takes place at one of the pope's first stops in the city where about 15 percent of the population and 97 percent of the AIDS patients are homosexuals.

In preparation for the pope's visit, Archbishop Quinn has reissued a 1984 letter to priests against all forms ofviolence toward homosexuals.

Fears of un-Christian reactions toward those in the homosexual community who have publicly criticized Pope John Paul II's planned visit to San Francisco this fall were cited as part of the reason for the letter's reissuance, as were antihomosexual attacks still occurring and possibly increasing in the San FranCisco area.

"Nothing can justify these attacks on homosexual persons, Archbishop Quinn said in his letter.

He said that priests have the "difficult"job of upholding church moral teaching against all homosexual activity and at the same time "unfailingly" showing "the compassion and kindness of Christ."

Because of the size of San Francisco's gay community, the city is expected to be the chief site of any demonstrations by homosexuals against the pope during his U.S. visit.

Homosexual criticism of the church increased significantly last year after the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a statement on homosexuality in October: It stressed that the homosexual condition is a disorder and said church authorities cannot support any groups for homosexuals which do not unequivocally support church teachings condemning all homosexual activity.

Leads'nation The San Frl\ncisco church leads the nation in AIDS ministry. Its Catholic Charities program provides help for the sick and education for society. Most Holy Redeemer Parish runs a support group for homosexuals, which includes an outreach program for AIDS patients.

Yet for Patrick Hughes, archdiocesan director of pastoral miqistry, for the archdiocese, the church has "not begun to touch in a pastoral way, what this means to people."

"Parents in many of our parishes have buried a son and not been able to name the cause of his death," Hughes said. "What do you say to a grieving mother or a

father who has rejected his son?"

He said the archdiocese must reach sexually active 17- and 18year-olds who are at riSk of contracting AIDS. "And there are 30,000 kids in our elementary schools we have to educate," he added.

Susanne Kiely, a nurse at San Francisco General Hospital, known for state-of-the-art AIDS treatment, said spiritual care of patients is important.

The average age ofAIDS patients at the hospital is. mid-30s, Miss Kiely said.

"Some turn to religion," she said. "Others have always been religious and want a priest to talk to. Spiritual support is important."

Presentation Sister Cleta Herold, pastoral associate at Most Holy Redeemer, said she has seen "pretty dramatic changes" in people with the onset of AIDS. Many living "in the fast lane" and caught up in materialism have changed when diagnosed as having AIDS, she said. In working with them, her emphasis is on compassion, not church moral teachings, she said.

"I uphold church teaching, but look upon this as a ministry to those who are ill, with compassion and a desire to help them," she said. .

"In counseling some of the gay men in the parish I don't find them asking what I think and what the church teaching is. They know what the church teaching is and they make their own decisions on their lifestyles."

The San Francisco church approaches homosexuality pastorally, said Father Miles O'Brien Riley, archdiocesan communications director. He contrasted the archdiocesan approach with that of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which last fall issued a document calling homosexuality a "disordered" condition.

The document "needs work, needs humanizing and spiritualizing," Father O'Brien said. .The Vatican and the archdiocese are "saying the same truth, but it's how you say it. We're learning how to say it with kindness."

"The Vatican says it's a disordered condition. We say there are many disordered conditions in our lives - anger, envy, vengeance.

We are sinners working our way to God one step at a time. What God judges us on are not the individual steps or the stumbles along the way but the direction of our lives."

Father Anthony McGuire, pastor of Most Holy Redeemer, said it is difficult to be a pastor in a parish with so many homosexuals because of the hostility of many toward the church.

Many homosexuals in the parish "are striving to live according to the teaching of the church. They are very apostolic and heroically live out their lives," he said.

"There's one area where they may not agree with the church's teaching but even within that context there's a certain integrity to . their lives," the priest said.

It's also hard for Father McGuire to be a pastor where so many young parishioners are dying.

"A fair number of parishioners have AIDS," he said. "There's a lot of heaviness. You see people grow weaker and weaker."

Academic excellence essential, he says CHICAGO (NC) - Jesuit Father Raymond A. Schroth said there is "no substitute for academic excellence" in trying to maintain Catholic identity when confronted by issues of academic freedom.

Father Morris Father John E. Morris, 98, the oldest Maryknoll Missioner, died July to at the Maryknoll motherhouse, Maryknoll, N.Y. His Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday.

Born in Fall River and a native of SS. Peter and Paul parish, he was ordained for the Fall River diocese in 1914 and served seven years at St. Joseph's parish, Fall River. While there he was manager of the parish's championship baseball team.

In 1921, with permission of then-Bishop Daniel F. Feehan, he

integrating students' social, physical, academic, cultural and spiritual sides. "Integration of the intellectual and emotional - which is essentially the Christian-Ignatian vision of finding God in all things - is rare."

The second step concerned goal statements. Father Schroth said many schools have statements that either inaccurately reflect the shared beliefs of the community or are entered Maryknoll, the 10-yearold Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America. He served 13 years in Korea, then was transferred to Japan, where he was interned at the beginning of World War II and repatriated in 1942.

Gertrude O'Brien of the diocesan chancery office recalls Father Morris as a young priest on home leave. "He would show movies of mission activities at backyard gatherings," she said.

Prevented by war from returning to mission work in Asia, he was assigned to Los Angeles to work with the Korean population there. In 1944 he was assigned to the missions of Hawaii where he served 12 years.

Returning to the United States in 1948, he was appointed director of the Maryknoll Brothers. The following year he went back to Hawaii.

Returning once more to the U.S. mainland in 1956, when his parish property was taken over for a jet airfield, he served in Sacred Heart parish, Fall River, for nearly a year, then was appointed regional director of Maryknoll activities in the Northwest, with his residence in Seattle. In 1959 he received his second assignment to Korea where he worked the next three years.

During the 1960s he worked in promotional activities for Maryknoll in Buffalo and New Orleans and in 1970 retired to St. Teresa's Residence at Maryknoll.

Father Morris is survived by a niece, Mrs. Vincent D'Andrea of

Horace Travassos Bishop Daniel A. Cronin presided and Father Horace J. Travassos was principal celebrant for the funeral Mass last Saturday at St. Patrick's Church, Fall River, of his father, Horace Travassos, 73, who died July 8.

A Fall River native, Travassos, a World War II veteran, was a city employee at the former Earle Hussey Hospital.

His survivors include his wife, Veronica J. (Carey) Travassos; his son, parochial vicar at St. Patrick's parish, Somerset; two daughters, Eleanor Waterhouse of Tiverton and Kathleen Fitzgerald of Fall River; three sisters, Mary Perry of Fall River, Alice Mello of Bristol and Olive Furtado of Tiverton; and a brother, Manuel Travassos of Fall River.

Father Morin The Mass of Christian Burial was offered Monday for Rev. Theodore M.. Morin, MS, 83, at the People's Chapel of LaSalette Shrine, Attleboro. .

Father Morin, a native of Auburn, Maine, had taught at the former LaSalette seminary in Attleboro as well as at other teaching institutions, and had served in parishes in Louisiana, Connecticut, Texas and various parts of New England.

Interment was in LaSalette Cemetery, Enfield, N.H.

Pilgrimage office mothballed NEW YORK (NC) - Fears of terrorism so reduced travel to Western Europe and the Middle East last year that operation of the U.S. Catholic Office for Pilgrimages was suspended, said its former director.

Father John Lazar, a Brooklyn priest who headed the office, said that "terrorism had posed such a problem we had to mothball it." . Msgr. John G. Nolan, director of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and a board member of the pilgrimage office, was designated caretaker ofthe files when it closed last September. He said terrorism "wrecked the travel business" last year, so there was "no need to maintain a fulltime office."

Msgr. Nolan said he did not yet have a reading on the feeling of American Catholics generally about making pilgrimages to Europe and the Middle East now, but he himselfsaw no special danger. Though travel to New York or anyplace else always involves a degree of risk, Msgr. Nolan said, travel to the Middle East is "as safe now as it ever was."

The pilgrimages office was established in 1985 by the Vatican agency that assists Catholics making religious pilgrimages, Peregrinatio ad Petri Sedem, and located in the New York Catholic Center where the archdiocese and agencies such as Catholic Near East have offices.

Bevilacqua, former chairman and a current member of the bishops' Committee on Migration and Tourism, was given responsibility for the office. A spokesman for the bishop said he hoped it could be reopened, but there were no immediate plans.

Father Lazar returned to his diocese last September.

He said in a telephone interview that he was continuing his involvement with pilgrimages because Brooklyn Bishop Francis J. Mugavero had appointed him diocesan pilgrimage director for the Marian year.

NEW YORK (NC) - Servite Father Lawrence Martin Jenco, who spent 19 months in captivity in Lebanon, says Lt. Col. Oliver North projected a "terribl~" image of American values with his testimony at the Iran-contra hearings.

North admitted that he lied to Congress to cover up the secret arms sales to Iran and the diversion of profits from the sale to the Nicaraguan rebels, known as contras.

"There are lies and lies and more lies, and young people begin to see it as something acceptable. This bothers me tremendously," said Father Jenco in an interview at the offices of Catholic Relief Services in Manhattan, where he is beginning a six-month assignment.

Father Jenco criticized North's claim that the motive for his deceit was pure. "He's saying the end justifies the means - but that is absolutely not right. It is immoral. If the means are immoral, the end is immoral. That's basic

Chnstian teachmg," Father Jenco said.

Father lenco was head of the Catholic Relief Services Beirut bureau when he was kidnapped in January 1985. He was released last July.

In his nationally televised testimony to a select congressional committee North said that the release of three kidnapped Americans on separate dates was the result of three shipments of U.S. arms to Iran. Father Jenco was one of the three released in the time frame outlined by North.

Father Jenco said that if he had known his freedom was part of an arms deal he would have remained a hostage.

"Some people don't believe me when I say that - but they don't know Lawrence Martin Jenco," he said.

He said he was initially upset over the idea that millions of dollars worth of arms were transferred for "a single person, with no

wife or children - arms that will be used to keep a war going between Iran and Iraq, a war in which millions of women and children are going to be killed."

He said his disgust deepened as it came to be revealed that persons involved in the deal apparently pocketed some of the money and that the remainder went to finance an illegal war in Nicaragua.

"I've gotten to the point where I find it difficult to approve of any kind of war, even what we used to call a 'just war.' I don't see any just wars. We're always looking for violent solutions to our problems, but violence accomplishes nothing," Father Jenco said.

Meanwhile he said he is in constant communication with ex-hostages, their families and the families of those still in captivity. He said he has also been active in the formation of a new organization, still unnamed, to serve as a support group for hostages and their families.

The End Never Justifies the Means Well, haven't we had a surprise! Ollie North has really provided quite a show.

Previous to last week's dramatic presentation, we were led by the media to expect some sleazy spy parading as a rather surly Marine. Well, whoever hoped to see North in such a role has been blown out of the box and rightly so.

Too often indeed the media project false, libelous and stupid images of those in the public eye. In this case, most viewers expected that the all-powerful, all-knowing Congress would make mincemeat out of a stumbling, bumbling military professional.

But the tables were indeed turned. It's been a JOY to see the supercilious newscasters and self-righteous House and Senate red-faced and embarrassed for once.

Before North's television blitz, many congresspersons were prepared for an easy time of it. They thought they had all the goods on North, that he was a sheep to be led to slaughter before the voting viewers. Hadn't they spent millions of dollars on creating a television platform from which to bamboozle their constituents? Well, they indeed got their just deserts.

Ollie North's impact on the mesmerized country was selfevident. From poolhall to barbershop, drugstor.e to factory, desk to kitchen sink, the public was with North.

Polls taken after four days of the hearings clearly indicated that Congress failed to accomplish what it set out to do with him.

His extraordinary performance certainly erased the idiot Marine, dumb soldier image so many people have of the military.

In short, North has been a media delight. His backup team of defense lawyers, especially Brendan Sullivan, has done an outstanding job of creating a showcase for his tricks, and tricks they are.

Let's be honest. North is one person you would not want to see in the White Rouse. It's not the shredding machines, the James Bond tactics or the covert operations that permeate all spy operations - it's the mind of the man that is so scary. His singlemingedness, unswerving determination and borderline fanaticism are too reminiscenyof too many former military dictators and their underlings.

North and his gang, whoever they may be, attempted to run a government within a government. In these United States, this is not right, .it is not the democratic way, it is not American.

No matter who gets the blame, and probably it will be the late William Casey, it is well that we have witnessed the psyche of the professional spy and the military determinist. Although the Congress deserves the poor image it projects when it becomes mdignant with its own shabby performance, at the same time North deserves to be seen for the unswerving and aggressive zealot that he is.

The world today has too many such people. From Iran to Central America, we are being held hostage by the obstinate fanatics. Each of us is subject to their terror and their whims.

We need a sense of moderation and compromise so peace may have a chance to be seen as a viable alternative to war and destruction.

The North hearings have indeed demonstrated the extent to which men will go for a cause. We have already experienced this with Marx, Lenin and Hitler.

Let us keep in mind as we wave the flag and pat North on the back that the end never justifies the means.

Meditation on skipping stones

By Rev. Kevin J. Harrington This summer I vowed to spend more of my leisure time at the beach. As a youngster. a day at the beach seemed to pass by so quickly.

I never grew bored with the shells, the seaweed or the rocks. While lying on the beach this year, I noticed two grade-school age brothers competing in skipping stones on the water, The Sibling rivalry was temporarily cast aside as their Dad joined in the contest.

He was certainly the best of teachers because within minutes their skills appreciably improved.

In this age when a parent's experience is so often irrelevant to his children's needs, it's comforting that a simple skill can be passed from one generation to the next.

The art of skipping stones is probably one of the few remaining that is transmitted completely by oral tradition. The dynamics of a skipping stone are still somewhat of a mystery unsolved by the scientific community.

Thirty years ago in the "Amateur Scientist" section of the renowned "Scientific American" magazine, a retired professor of English of Columbia University, Ernest Hunter Wright, asked his physicist friends to explain why when he threw a stone along the wet sand at the water's edge it alternated between short hops and long hops while on the surface of the water, it skipped with long hops only. In his 1957 article the professor wrote: "With the luck of a layman, I have had the novel

experience of seeing several of the men who plucked the heart out of the atom's mystery scratch their heads in vain for the solution of a problem which I now submit to a wider audience."

One of the hardest part of any physics textbook is the section on the dynamics of rotation, spin and angular momentum. Learning the dynamics of why a curve ball curves and a sinker ball sinks requires at least a rudimentary knowledge of vector calculus.

While Little League-age boys know how to throw a curve or a sinker, they are not taught why the balls do what they do until they are of college age. Every scientific formula is an abstraction that attempts to reduce variables to a minimum. Baseballs are spherical and their seams must be of uniform dimensions. But stones on the shore are a scientist's nightmare! No two are exactly alike, while the medium of air is much more predictable than those of sand and water.

ubiquitous bald billiard ball that is a model for everything from atoms to stars. But the simpler the model, the more removed it is from reality. That's one reason math is such a powerfui tool in physics. Man's ultimate abstractIOn, It cleanly takes care of the messy details of reality by 'emporarily dispensing with them altogether The real world ofnature is much too intricate to deal with in Its natural form Biology and chemistry are mcredlbly complex compared with physIcs, which finds even such a seemmgly Simple thing as a stone too complicated to handle.

Our thoughts on the skipping stones have led us far afield. It IS clear that physiCists know a great deal about spin, rotatIOn and angular momentum, so the fact that 30 years after Professor Wright's question physiCists do not completely understand the stone's behavior IS probably due to their lack' of interest.

Someday, I suppose, someone with time on his hands will solve the problem; but I prefer that physicists content themselves with their perfect models and with expressing their earthshaking generalizations in their obscure mathematical language.

It is delightful to consider that why stones skip as they do is an unsolved mystery that serves to keep physicists humble and children occupied during these precious summer days.

20 big ones!

This column marks 20 years oftalking wIth you weekly. 20 years! One of my children was not even born then. He begins college this fall.

"Don't you ever run out of ideas?" readers often ask. Time, yes. Ideas, never. Ideas are everywhere. I have lists, clippings and notebooks filled with ideas. Some get out of date so periodically, while tidier women are cleamng closets, I pare down m} lists.

In observance of this unremarkable anniversary, let me answer the questions I'm most often asked.

"How did you get started?" I received a call from Father Dan Flaherty who was then editor of The National Catholic Register.

He had read some of my articles in Catholic and lay magazines and asked if I was interested in doing a "woman's column."

I smile now because we no longer designate ideas and columns as gender-oriented but back then we both knew what he meant. My first three columns appeared on the "women's pages" of those days, the ones with recipes and crochet patterns.

Father Flaherty put my fourth on his editorial page and I've been there ever since. (Someone once asked me why I never offered recipes and I was dumbstruck. My cooking advice would represent fraud on the public.)

In 1970, the Register changed

hands and editors and I moved to the NC News Service and from 16 to 30 p~pers In 1974, I changed focus and syndicatIOn. from general to family and from NC to Alt Publications. Jim Alt was my editor at NC I have been with him smce '74 and my column now appears in 70 diocesan papers, give or take a few each month, depending upon the controversy I generate.

"Do you ever get in hot water?"

You bet. If I don't, I'm not writing anythmg of importance. ASide from the angry post-Vatican II Issues like hatless women m church, sign of peace and stand-up communion (I'm not proud of some of the adolescent columns I wrote then), I've learned that pets, peace, sex, gun control, the pope, and Catholic schools garner the most reactionary mail.

FORT WORTH, Texas (NC) - The problem of liturgical language that is primarily masculine reflects the need for reforms in human social IOstitutlOns, said an authority in liturgy reform and renewal.

The trend toward inclusive language in hymns IS a posItive sIgn, said Father Robert Hovda, speaking to the natlonal conference of the Hymn Society of America recently held in Fort Worth.

Inclusive language avoids using masculine terms such as "mankind," "men" or "sons" to refer to groups that include women.

Father Hovda, former liturgy professor at The Catholic University of America in Washington, said it is good that worship and hymns are "evolving" because "evolving is the way we are ... the way God made us and calls us to be" The priest is a columnist for Worship magazine, a Catholic liturgy publication. He worked for the Catholic Liturgical Conference from 1965 to 1978.

He told 160 particIpants in the Hymn Society meeting that to be a pilgrim people, believers must see the laws, dogmas and texts of their faith not as the end of a journey, but as "fuel for carrying on."

The Hymn Society of America is a 64-year-old ecumenical organization that encourages congregational singing. It has 3,000 members in five nations.

In his keynote address, Father Hovda pointed out three signs of the times he believes greatly affect modern-day worship services.

The first sign, he said, is an evolution in the worshiper's consciousness ofthe world, which he defined as a shift from seeing the world controlled by fate to seeing it as a divine-human creation.

"We are no longer sitting back and letting the 'stars' do it all," he said. "We are beginning,just beginning, to see that to belong to God we must accept responsibility for the injustice and discrimination in our institutions which frustrate God's design. " Second, he said, there has been "an evolution in our understanding of humanity" which includes growing recognition of the universal need for each other's gifts and for solidarity.

The third sign of the times, he said, is that Catholics are moving from a private evangelism to a more community-based faith.

While the basic language of symbols used in worship speaks of human solidarity, Father Hovda said, the words of prayers, songs and other texts often do not because of the culture and era in which they were written. For that reason, he said, they demand continual revision.

Inclusive language "should be the common concern of us all," he said, adding that it corrects "an ancient cultural corruption that has effectively prevented growth in our understanding of God and of God's transcendence." . In creating new hymns or adapting old ones, Father Hovda challenged writers and editors to be aware that the main purpose of their ministry is reconciliation.

He said references to God "must be true to God's holy otherness, God's transcendence of male and female partiality and particularity."

Department heads are adults certified 10 their respective fields, and counselors are chosen for common sense, maturity and responsibility, as well as for care and concern toward those in their charge.

FATHER Peter P. Mullen, 54, a Maryknoll missioner from North Attleboro, marked his 25th anniversary of priestly ordination last month at Maryknoll, N.Y. Now working in Maryknoll promotion in the Cleveland area, he has served in Hawaii and for nine years in jungle missions in the Philippines.

Returning to the United States in 1972, he directed Maryknoll promotion in Buffalo and in New Jersey before being assigned to Cleveland in 1978.

He calls his years in the Philippines "an adventure beyond description. There were few priests but many wonderful people," he said.

Holy Union Sisters ofthe Immaculate Heart and Sacred Heart provinces of the United States gathered recently at Coyle and Cassidy High School, Taunton, to mission delegates to the community's general chapter, to be held in Rome July 18 to Aug. 15.

In preparation for the international meeting, held every six years, community members have studied the congregation's constitutions as they are lived in today's church world. Conclusions reached will be carried to Rome by delegates.

Chapter members will also elect a successor to Sister Ignatius Loyola, present superior general, who is completing a 12-year term in office.

In a recent letter to friends ofthe community, Sister Ann Kernan, superior of the Fall River-based Immaculate Heart province of the Holy Union Sisters, said the forthcoming chapter would be "a time for being especially attentive to how God is calling the sisters to service in the Church and a time for making decisions that will move the Holy Union forward in the years ahead in responding to needs of God's people."

After graduating from St. Francis Xavier elementary school in Acushnet and St. Anthony High School, New Bedford, he graduated from Worcester State College in 1980 before' entering the LaSalette community.

Father Pepin prepared for the priesthood at St. John's Seminary, Brighton, and was assigned to LaSalette Center of Christian Living, Attleboro, for a ministerial year, during which he took final vows in the LaSalette congregation.

In April 1985 he was ordained to the transitional diaconate, then served as deacon at Sacred Heart parish, Lebanon, NH, until his priestly ordination.

Effective Aug. I, he will be associate pastor at Our Lady of the Rosary parish, Windsor, Ont., Canada.

Leaders praise Constitution NEW YORK (NC) - The 200year-old. U.S. Constitution has "created a continuing climate of voluntary devotion in which religion has flourished," the chief administrators of the nation's major Jewish, Christian and Roman Catholic organizations said in a joint statement marking the Constitution's bicentennial.

Gratitude for the nation's past must be joined, however, with "pledges of renewed commitment" to a future of full freedom and equality for all, the three leaders said.

They called the Constitution "a stable yet adaptable framework" for American life which protected religious liberty and "safeguarded the aspirations" ofthose who came seeking freedom.

Signing the statement on the bicentennial of the Constitution were the Rev. Arie R. Brouwer, general secretary of the National Council of Churches; Rabbi Henry D. Michelman, executive vice president of the Synagogue Council of America; and Msgr. Daniel F. Hoye, general secretary ofthe U.S. Catholic Conference.

The National Council of Churches is an organization of 32 U.S. non-Catholic Christian denominations. The synagogue council represents the major branches of Judaism. The USCC is the agency ofthe U.S. Catholic bishops that addresses public policy and social action issues.

Msgr. Hoye said the brief joint statement was an effort to express the common ground that leaders of "three very diverse organizations" have in their support and appreciation of"a basic document in our land."

Here is the text of the joint statement: "We celebrate this year the 200th anniversary of the Constitution of the United States, the first new nation to break free of colonial rule. That new nation established a government based on the principles of liberty and equality. The Constitution drawn up in 1787 has provided a stable yet adaptable framework that has endured for 20 decades and proved amenable to its own growth through amendments which outlawed slavery and enfranchised women.

"The religious community especially esteems the protections of religious liberty written into the original Constitution and expanded upon in the First Amendment.

They have safeguarded the aspirations that brought many of our forebears to these shores and have created a continuing climate of voluntary devotion in which religion has flourished.

"We wish, however, to see gratitude for the blessings of the past joined with pledges of renewed commitment to achieve full equality and true freedom for all the peoples who make up this nation.

Only then can we fulfill the spirit. and promise of the Constitution.

To that essential task we invite all the people of our faith communities and other persons of good will."

Also commenting on the Constitution bicentennial was former Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri.

In an interview with the St. Louis Review, archdiocesan newspaper, he said that the Constitution "endures for two fundamental reasons. "The citizenry as a whole respect it and want it to endure,

and the Supreme Court acts as its constant guardian."

He attributed the Constitution's strength to its framers, whom he described as "geniuses."

"If you didn't have Madison and Hamilton in that hot room, if you didn't have Washington presiding, if you didn't have Franklin lumbering around, we wouldn't have ended up with the Constitution we have - one that's worked for 200 years," Eagleton said.

In fact, he said, he would regard only two proposed amendments to the document to be "compelling" additions now. One is an antiabortion amendment and the other an equal rights amendment, he said.

He said neither of the two seems "politically imminent."

"I have supported a human life amendment, and then there was an amendment offered by Sen. [Orrin] Hatch (R-Utah) and myself, a states' rights version of that," he said. "I support an equal rights amendment to the Constitution.

Other than those two, I wouldn't identify anything as being overwhelmingly compelling."

The former senator said he fears a modern constitutional convention.

"I'd view it as a very dangerous and reckless undertaking," said Eagleton, a lawyer. "I've studied this issue and I think it can be argued that if a constitutional convention were convened the whole Constitution would be up for grabs, and this would frighten me."

Yet, he said, "the Constitution is, has always been and will always continue to be an elastic document. It adjusts to the mores and problems of a given era. The Constitution has to be elastic enough for the Supreme Court in the 20th century to interpret a Constitution that was written in the 18th century."

Under Chief Justices Earl Warren, Warren Burger and William Rehnquist the concept of the common good furthered by the Constitution has fared well, Eagleton said.

"I think history will show thJlt the Warren court and its successors, which include the Burger court and now the Rehnquist court, will have done more to enhance what is contained in those words 'the common good' than any other era of the court," he said.

But the public could do better in educating itself about the Constitution, he added, suggesting that "precious few American citizens really know much" about it. "It is just tacitly accepted without a full

Glass confession astounds priest WASHINGTON (NC) - Hostage Charles Glass' purported confession to being a CIA operative in Lebanon has "astounded" a Jesuit priest who has known the American journalist for 20 years.

Jesuit Father Eugene Colosimo, whom Glass has regularly visited since graduating from Loyola High School, Los Angeles, in 1968, expressed his dis belief in a telephone interview July 10.

"He wasn't that kind of person," Father Colosimo added. "His interest was in writing and discovering news. He was not into intrigue. I'm sure the statement was made under compulsion and that he was not handled too gently."

Glass, ajournalist based in London, was kidnapped in Lebanon June 17 while researching a book on the Middle East. On July 7, captors distributed a videotape of his purported confession, which was seriously questioned by many who know him. The U.S. government and ABC News, for which he had worked, also denied he had any role in espionage.

Glass "had a great love for the Lebanese people," said Father Colosimo, with whom the newsman frequently discussed his work.

The priest said that Glass' interest stemmed from the fact that his mother, who died when he was a teenager, was of Lebanese descent.

He went to the wartorn nation shortly after he graduated from the University of Southern California to learn more about it, the Jesuit said.

Since his kidnapping, Glass has been remembered in prayer by the priests who taught him at Loyola High School and parishioners at St. John Fisher Parish in nearby Palos Verdes Peninsula, where his father and stepmother live.

"He has a deep sense of faith and was concerned about the church and sacraments," said Father Colosimo. He also was a "little disturbed by modern changes" in the church, he added, and often expressed concern about friends who had left the church.

Another teacher, Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Veronica Lynch, who said she was "very close" to Glass, whom she taught in eighth grade at Cathedral Chapel School in Los Angeles, also spoke of Glass' no-nonsense approach to religion.

He took religion seriously even as a youth, said the nun, who still corresponds with Glass. She remembers Glass as a "very intelligent and serious young man" who "manifested unusual sincerity for a young child." .

Sister Lynch, who was in charge of altar boys at Cathedral Chapel, where Glass made his first Communion and confirmation, said that as an altar boy he was "very faithful to his assignments."

Currently, Sister Lynch is assigned to the Palos Verdes Peninsula parish. The convent there was the site of a special Mass for Glass which hi.s father and stepmother asked the parish priest to offer for him shortly after he was kidnapped.

St. Vincent's Home director awarded honorary degree

Sister Rose is in her third year as St. Vincent's director. She began at the home in 1963 as superior of the sisters who worked there, and was appointed administrator in 1974. Earlier, she taught second, fifth and sixth grades at St. James School, New Bedford, and St. Mary's School, North Attleboro, now part of consolidated schools.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy after graduating from the former St. Xavier Academy in her home city of Providence, and holds a bachelor's degree in education from Salve Regina College, Newport, and a master's degree in social work from Boston College.

In 1988, Sister Rose will mark her 50th year as a nun.

You'd never know it. The boys and girls at St. Vincent's keep her extraordinarily young, exuberant and happy.

"There's never a dull moment, never," she says. "It's nice to watch the children who come here with serious problems go through the program and learn to relax and enjoy childhood and young adulthood."

She says how much she loves it and proceeds to compliment the artist, a staffer at St. Vincent's, a facility for special needs children.

Indeed, Sister Rose is full of compliments for her staff. She has smiles and cheerful hellos for all 4m"0 pass her open door.

And she is appreciated in turn.

The Sister of Mercy was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Southeastern Massachusetts University, North Dartmouth, in appreciation for her work at St. Vincent's and her outreach to the university (see right).

"I was just totally surprised," the modest nun said, describing how she felt upon hearing from SMU. "I just never thought anything like that could happen to me.

the cities and towns in the Fall River diocese and the Boston archdiocese. There is a long list of children awaiting admission.

Under Sister Rose's direction, St. Vincent's is enjoying much recognition. Its vocational program, for example, was recently named one ofsix outstanding Massachusetts programs for special needs students. The accolade came from the Council of Occupational Placement Education, ofthe Massachusetts Association of Approved Private Schools, a group of over 100 schools serving students unable to function in normal educational settings.

Sister Rose credits her employees for the success.

"It's very satisfying to see the dedication of the sisters and the lay staff," she said, noting that personnel often spend their free time with the home's youngsters.

"They're very concerned about anything that has to do with the children. " Discussing SMU, she said she thinks its programs are very good "and improving every year."

The university's citation rightly noted that Sister Rose has given "breath and flesh" to the title of Sister of Mercy.

It put into words what the staff and youngsters at St. Vincent's have known an along about her.

Motivation and love can work wonders.

Helping children of divorce

By Dr. James and Mary Kenny Dear Dr. Kenny: I am a fourthgrade teacher in a Catholic school.

Three children in my class have had parents go through a divorce.

I know the children experienced a difficult time, and it was made worse by unkind remarks from some of their classmates. How can I as a teacher make it easier for children of divorce? - Ohio Without any doubt, the most important thing a teacher can do for children of divorcing parents is to be supportive of the parents.

This does not mean that you agree with the parents' decision.

Teachers should not blame the parents for the children's distress.

They need rather to express sympathy and recognize that the time of divorce is very difficult for parents. Also, teachers should not take sides in a custody battle.

Parents are the major influence in children's lives. When children show signs of distress, it often reflects turmoil in the home. This is why your first and best way to help the child is by helping and being supportive of the parents.

The divorcing parents are probably on an emotional roller coaster, with extreme ups and downs.

They are facing the shock of sepa-

The year of the wedding revival

By Antoinette Bosco I'll remember the summer of'87 as the time of the revival of weddings. My tally to date is eight eight couples permitting me to be among those giving witness to their lifelong pledge of love to each other.

Two of those weddings are indeed special. My daughter Mary, was a bride May 30 and my son, Francis Xavier, is to be a groom Aug. 22, the day of his grandparents' wedding 62 years ago. Other weddings are of friends, a former student, my youngest son's Army buddy, who was part of the family after their discharge, and a niece.

We are seeing somewhat of a wedding explosion today. Clergy of all denominations are mentioning that it seems like old times but with some major differences.

Almost all the couples they're seeing now are older, many past 30. A great many have lived together for a period of several months, sometimes several years.

Many couples come to the clergy on their own. A minister told me that when he was first starting out 40 years ago, the mother would be the one to call and make the wedding arrangements. "Now 1 don't see a mother usually until the wedding day," he said.

Ministers reveal that couples today come to them in utter seriousness. They know marriage is a big step, one requiring a permanent commitment. They are ready to pledge that kind of fidelity to their partners within the institution of marriage. .

As a priest told me, these couples have had maybe a dozen years to taste single life. They've got good jobs and lots of opportunity for fun. But as they get older, the shine wears off and they begin to feel a prevailing emptiness.

Somehow the jobs, the dates and the fun schedule remain activities - things people do. They are not the ingredients of substantive living. To be on that plane, we

need' love because we are made in the image of God. For most people, that means the one-to-one variety of love in marriage. And we need to cocreate, best expressed in having children.

The need to pledge oneself to another in faithful love and the desire to have children are so basic that they cannot be suppressed forever.

As one bride told me, she only knew her live-in boyfriend really loved when he said that he wanted to marry her. When he was ready to stand beside her before witnesses and pledge his life to her forever, then she was sure that their relationship was not just temporary.

My daughter, on the eve of her wedding, spoke to me of what it was that brought her to the decision to say "I do." It was reaching a point of trusting one another so

deeply that she and Rick knew that nothing could separate them; then it was time for the "real stuff," marriage.

When 1 watched my daughter speak her vows as though she were carving them in the stones of time and heard her husband say he would give her this ring "not to bound or to bind, but to bond forever," 1 felt their joy and their truth.

One other bonus comes with marriage - the extension of families. 1have been blessed by gaining new and wonderful friends in the parents of my son'-in-Iaw and future daughter-in-law. These are people with whom 1shall be sharing grandchildren, I hope.

Weare more than new friends.

We are the network that together will add strength to our children even as we launch them to carryon God's work in this world.

Through this, all truly human values not only are accepted but energetically defended; the dignity of the human person, fundamental human rights, peace, freedom from oppression, poverty and injustice.

But integral salvation is obtained only if these human realities are purified and further elevated through grace to human familiarity with God, through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit.

Lancaster, Hussey to star in filmed papal play ROME (NC) - A play about iove and marriage, written in 1960 b) then-Auxiliary Bishop Karol Wojtyla of Krakow, Poland, will make its screen debut this year in a production starring Burt Lancaster and Olivia Hussey.

Shooting on the film, "The GoldsmIth's Shop," began In Krakow in June and will continue over the summer In Canada. It is adapted from the poetic drama ofthe same name written by the man who is now Pope John Paul II. The $9 million production is expected to be distributed later this year, probably beginning in the United States, 'producers told reporters in Rome July 8. The film's cast joined the press conference via satellite from the set locatton in Poland.

Lancaster plays the jeweler, the play's pivotal character, who reflects on the lives of two couples who come to his shop: young lovers (played by Miss Hussey and Italian actor Andrea Occhipinti) choosing an engagement ring, and a woman (Jo Champa) who tries to sell her wedding band because of the emotional coldness of her husband (Ben Cross). , "It's a fantastic love story," Lancaster told reporters. He said he viewed the goldsmith, who at one point refuses to buy back the wedding ring, as a man of "profound moral tension and deep humanity."

Director Michael Anderson, whose other films include "Operation Crossbow" and "Logan's Run," said the fact that the pope was the author was unimportant to the film's production. "The story he told is a modern story," he said.

Italy's state television RAI is the main producer ofthe film, which is expected to be released to television markets after about 18 months.

At the time of its publication under the pseudonym Andrzej Jawien, the three-act play, subtitled "Meditations on the Sacrament of Marriage," was considered avantgarde and unsuitable for the conventional Polish stage. It consists of a number of monologues, spoken by characters who stand near each other but do not directly communicate.

The play was later translated into more than 20 languages and has sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide - mostly since the pope's election. It has been performed several times on radio, and at least once on TV. The play's transition to film is being cautiously supervised by a Vatican commission that manages

The Aramaic term which he used was "abba," which can be translated as "my father," or "papa" or "dad," the pope told an estimated 7,000 pilgrims and visitors.

The text of his remarks follows: "Jesus' self-revelation as the son of God is given a unique expression in the Aramaic word abba, with which he addresses the Father, and which indicates his awareness of the unique and exclusive relationship existing between himself and the Father. This word contains the whole truth of St. Luke's phrase: 'No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him (10:22). The word abba in a sense summarizes the whole truth of the intimate life'of the Blessed Trinity.

"The word is taken from the vocabulary of family life, and speaks of the personal communion between father and son. On Jesus' lips it expresses an intimacy which the Old Testament did not know. Yet Jesus always spoke of his Father in this way, and he brought hiS listeners to understand that when he spoke of his Father he meant it in the special sense of 'abba' - my father.'

"When the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray he responds with the prayer of the 'Our Father.' In this way they too are led to understand their sharing in divine sonship. 'To all who ... believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God' (In 1: 12). And although Jesus always draws a distinction between 'his father' and 'our father,' giving to the term 'my father' the meaning of an exclusive father-son relationship, it is still the same God whom we, as adopted children, call'father.'

The pope's approach with Dutch Catholics may well be a model for his U.S. trip.

"If the church makes unpalatable pronouncements, it does so because it feels obliged to do so," the pope said during his 1985 trip to the Netherlands.

"There was controversy befnre my visit, and the controversy will probably continue," he said at the end of that journey.

Vatican says probe should seek "true guilty parties" by the Vatican bank. Investigators say they still do not know where much of the money went. In a settlement with former Banco Ambrosiano creditors, the Vatican bank made a payment of $240 million in 1984.

Italian authorities issued arrest warrants in February for Archbishop Marcinkus and the two other officials, Luigi Mennini and Pellegrino de Strobel, for complicity in fraudulent bankruptcy. An Italian court has been asked to determine whether the warrants are valid.

The charges stem from the Vatican bank's relationship with Banco Ambrosiano President Roberto Calvi, whose secret dealings resulted in his bank's collapse. The warrants claim Vatican bank officials probably knew or should have known about the illegal deals.

The Vatican has consistently said it was used by Calvi and was his unwitting victim.

Calvi was found hanged under a bridge in London shortly before the bank collapse.

The three Vatican bank officials live in Vatican City and must be extradited before they can be arrested. The Vatican has indicated it will refuse the extradition request if the warrants are validated. So far, the three officials have refused to be questioned by investigators.

In the interview, Msgr. de Bonis expressed "complete trust" in the eventual outcome of the judicial process, but added that in the meantime there was a period of "anguished expectation" in the Vatican.

Annulment causes cited in Roman Rota report VATICAN CITY - In 1986, the Vatican's court of appeals for marriage cases decided 123 cases in favor of annulment, citing causes ranging from nymphomania to bigamy to a lack of witnesses.

The figure represents an almost 20 percent increase from the preceding year, according to a newly released 1,684 page book, "The Activity of the Holy See 1986."

Msgr Kenneth Boccafoloa, a member of the apostolic Tribunal of the Roman Rota, said that since Vatican II the agency has given . "more credence" to psychological conditions which may restrict a person's ability to contract marriage.

The Roman Rota has junsdi.ctlOn for cases appealed to the Holy See. The best known of such cases are those concermng the validity of marnage.

While at one time the attitude was that "someone was doing wrong and they had better change their mind and do right," said Msgr. Boccafola, the church now recognizes that some impairments limit a person's ability to freely control his or her actions.

In one case in which annulment was granted, a woman suffered from nymphomania "which can render the woman incapable of assuming the essential obligation of fidelity,' the report said.

Nymphomania is the abnormal and uncontrollable desire by a woman for sexual intercourse.

Msgr. Boccafola said satryriasis, the equivalent condition for men, might also be grounds for an annulment.

grounds for annulments in cases in which those conditions were shown to interfere with the ability to contract a marriage.

Homosexuality could also be grounds for an annulment if ~t could be shown as an "irrepressIble inclination toward the same sex, whatever ItS cause, inborn or acquired," the report said.

An annulment was also granted for "irresponsibility" so severe it limited a man's ability to assume the duties of marriage. In the case cited, a priest dispensed from his vows, which were "taken with extreme lightness," married and fathered children, only to abandon the family without a word.

The court also granted annulments for cases involving bigamy and lack of witnesses.

In the first, a marriage at the Vatican between a Catholic and a recent convert from Judaism was ruled invalid when it was discovered that the convert was still married to a Jewish woman in Romania.

In the second, a case which the report called "truly strange," two Catholics in the Soviet Union were married in 1937 in a civil ceremony according to the law. But because they did not consider that ceremony to have any value because of their "profoundly religious consciences," they traveled with great difficulty in the Russian winter to . find a Catholic priest.

Finally reaching him, he blessed their marriage, but without witnesses.

The Rota ruled the marriage was invalid because the couple did not grant the civil rite any value, but also had not conformed to the norms for a religious rite, which called for two witnesses.

Oliver North doll-like altar boy WASHINGTON (NC) - Lt. Col. Oliver L. North's teachers in the Diocese of Albany, N.Y., remember the star of the televised IranContra hearings as a "good student" and an altar boy who "looked like a doll."

North, a baptized Catholic who now attends an Episcopal church, lived in the Albany Diocese in his youth and got an early taste of soldienng during his first year of high school at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany in the 1957-58 academic year.

His nationally televised testimony was at the heart of congressional investigations into illegal arms sales to Iran and illegal funding for the contras in Nicaragua, operations North admitted to being involved in through his National Security Council job at the White House.

The U.S. Marine was "a good student," Christian Brother William Martin, currently prinCipal of the military academy, said in a telephone interview.

North attended the school, about 30 miles from his childhood home in Philmont, N.Y., for a year before transferring to his local public high school. He is not well remembered by academy classmates.

"I recall his face," said James Coyne, an academy graduate and now Albany County Executive.

The notoriety surrounding North has brought up his name among classmates a lot, said Coyne, but "not too many remember him."

North is better remembered at Sacred Heart parish in Philmont,

a hamlet south of Albany, where he made his first communion in 1951 and was confirmed in 1953.

He was baptized in 1943 at St. Peter Prince ofthe Apostles parish in San Antonio, Texas, where he was born.

North was an altar server at the Philmont parish.

"He looked like a doll up there on the altar," said Evelyn Rosani, who taught North in Sacred Heart's religious education program.

"I remember him always - on the altar serving Mass. He was just beautiful," she said.

In class, he was "very helpful, always willing," she said.

"He was a nice boy, not a bit fresh, very, very polite. I've never heard anything about him that would go against him," she said.

As an adult, North attends the Church ofthe Apostles in Fairfax, Va., an Episcopal parish known for such charismatic practices as faith healing Frank Gallo, parish administrator, said the Norths are active in the parish and the children attend Sunday school there. North and his wife also belong to one of the parish "cells," groups 'of three to six couples who meet weekly in one another's homes for Bible study and prayer.

Gallo said the church, part of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, considers itself "renewed Episcopal," has a Pentecostal background, and has attracted many persons from various faiths, who, he said, find in the church the "presence and love of the Lord."

Q. What does one do when one dates someone for a long time and it ends abruptly with really no sign that this was going to happen?

There are various remedies for the kind of pain you probably are feeling now.

Some people are able to become occupied with an old or new hobby or with some new activity. One girl I know joined an amateur theatrical group and made a host of new friends almost overnight.

And making new friends or giving greater attention to some present friends is one of the best cures for the loneliness you may feel.

Indeed an acquaintance of mine describes loneliness as a call from God to go out and make new friends.

But that's easy to say and sometimes hard to do. It may take weeks of patient effort, some failures, more struggle and lots of generosity.

Don't, however, adopt a friendat-any-price attitude. Hang on to your self-respect no matter how lonely you may be. Know that many people, young and old, have endured painful bouts of loneliness and emerged as stronger and better people. , Hang on also to this idea: "If you want a friend, be a friend."

That attitude has proven success, ful in quite a few cases. Give it a . long try - and good luck.

A refrain heard by religiOUS brothers across the country, that question indicates how poorly brothers are understood by other Catholics.

"I'm often asked [that question]," Franciscan Brother Brian P. Maloney, executive director ~f. the National Assembly of Rehglous Brothers, said in an interview as the organization began its recent national convention in St. Louis.

"My vocation is not to be a priest," Brother Maloney said. "The brotherhood is not a stepping stone to the priesthood. It is a separate and distinct vocation in the church.

"It is recognized by the church, but I don't think it is understood very well by either the laity or the hierarchy."

The Chicago-based assembly, which represents about 900 of the 7,400 religious brothers in the United States, drew some 140 brothers, representing about 30 r~ligious communities, to its St. LOUIS meeting.

Brother Maloney, interviewed by the St. Louis Review, archdi- . ocesan newspaper, said one of the. organization's goals is to make people more aware of the distinct vocation of the religious brother.

Many still see brothers as "second-class citizens" in the church, he said, "but I ',think we have made strides in that area.

Many religious brothers are highly educated and respected in their ministries. Class distinctions fade away with the kinds of ministries we have pursued."

TV prizes awarded LOS ANGELES (NC) - The writer of "Promise," a 90-minute CBS-TV drama about a man who has promised his parents that he will care for his mentally ill brother, was top winner of the 1987 Humanitas awards for most fully communicating human values.

Episodes of"Family Ties" (NBC) and "Kate and Allie" (CBS) were also among the winners.

The Humanitas awards are given annually to television writers by the Human Family Educational and Cultural Institute headed by Paulist Father Ellwood Kieser.

Richard Friedenberg, Kenneth Blackwell and Tennyson Flowers divided the $25,000 Humanitas prize for "Promise."

Gary Goldberg and Alan Uger split a $15,000 prize for primetime 60-minute program for "My Name is Alex," an episode of "Family Ties" in which Alex, played by Michael J. Fo~, deals with thoughts of death, hfe and afterlife.

In the 30-minute prime-time category the winner was Bob Randall, who was awarded $10,000 for "Jennie and Jason," a "Kate and Allie" episode in which a mother and daughter discuss premarital sex.

A $10,000 prize for non-primetime children's animated programming went to John Loy and Alan Burnett for "The Lure ofthe Orb," an episode of "Smurfs" (NBC).

Another $10,000 award went to Melvin Van Peebles for non-primetime live action children's programming. Peebles won for "The Day They Came to Arrest the Book," a CBS Schoolbreak Special.
