In his remarks to parishioners and guests, Father Phillipino traced the history of Immaculate Conception Church,and of the community which establish'ed it and continues to grow and develop while making many contributions to the community at large.

The first Catholic Church' in North Easton was located on Pond Street, on II plot of land donated by, the Ames family. A chapel on that spot was dedicated in 1851.

Providen'ce, RI, was established in 1871. OnJuly 4,1902, the cornerstone of the present church was lliid on Main Street in North Easton, and the church Officially opened two years later. The present church was construCted of rock quarried from the site on which the church stands.

State Representative Geraldine Creedon, whose district includes Immaculate Conception parish, presented FatherPhillipino with a resolution from the Massachusetts State Senate, offered by Sen. Michael C. Creedon, marking this event in the life of the parish community.

Recognized by Sites at the dinner were the dinner dance committee, consisting of Wil and Irene Roberge, Jake and Laetitia Tremblay, Barbara Neely, and Patricia Maki. The Daughters of Isabella, represented by Maureen Papineau, presented Father Phillipino with a check representing the proceeds of ' the sale of anniversary Christmas ornaments, and presented a gift of one of the ornaments to Bishop O'Malley.

The invocation at the dinner was led by Father Phillipino, and the closing benediction by Bishop O'Malley. The parish will continue to mark the anniversary year with other events and ceremonies, and is issuing a commemorative print, depicting the church facility and 'other landmarks in the town of Easton, representing the many areas of the Easton community which have been impacted by the me,mbers of Immaculate Conception parish, '

Expressing a Need . Over 99.6 percent of the Catholic Church in, America is composed of the laity. Less than A percent are bishops, priests, deacons and religious men and women. With this in mind, it's no wonder that the Church has been trying its best to convince the laity of their importance and influence.

Although a "lay apostolate" has existed in the Church since its foundation days, it really was not until the Second Vatican Council that official thinking on the subject was expressed in a conciliar decree, Indeed, the role of the laity has been on the prov~rbial back burner since apostolic times.

It has taken almost 2,000 years to recognize that much of the Church's mission and its future depend.on the laity, not on the minority in religious life. As we prepare for the third millennium, it should be more and more obvious that the direction of the Church will be more and more in the hands of the laity.

The ,people of God exercise a genuine apostolate as they ·strive to bring the Gospel message to those about them. Incorporated into Christ's Mystical Body through baptism and confirmed in the power of the Spirit; they have been assigned to their ministry by the Lord Himself.

Sad to say, this insight was rarely recognized in the preVatican church. Everyone was assigned a "proper place'~ and ke'pt in that place. Romans 5:6,-11

After the completion of the joyous Easter season, the Church's liturgy returns to Ordinary Time during which we are reminded of our Christian vocation to follow Christ. This Sunday's readings highlight God's special covenant with Israel, and, in Christ, with the whole human family. Like the twelve apostles in today's gospel, we Christians are called to graciously announce the arrival of God's kingdom.

Let us celebrate God's covenant by singing the refrain ofthe psalm: "We are his people: the ·sheep of his flock" (Ps 100).

The Exodus reading recounts Israel's arrival at Mount Sinai afH:r its journey from Egypt. As the community encamps, Moses ascends Sinai to hear the Lord's initial words. They capture the essence of the Exodus story. First, the Lord tells Moses to say to the house of Jacob that its escape from Egypt has been his gracious action in saving them and preparing them to become his own people.

You have seen for yourselves how I treated the .

Egyptians and how I bore you up on eagle wings, and brought you here to myself.

Second, the Lord invites them to enter a covenant to keep his commandments and thereby become his "special possession."

Therefore, if you harken to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people, though all the earth is mine. You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.

"Holy" (gadosh) has the sense of being "other" or "separate." Israel's otherness consists in its unique statue as God's people, set apart in the world to keep the Lord's commandments.

For the next fourteen weeks, the second reading will be from Paul's Letter to the Romans. In today's selection, Paul proclaims the consequences of the death and resurrection of Christ for humanity. In the previous verses, he describes the salvation available in Christ through several metaphors; we have been "justified by faith," made "at peace with God," and given "access to grace." Although in one sense Christ has already achieved salvation, Paul is also aware that it is not completed. Christ's death and resurrection have made salvation accessible, but the Christian community must endure in faith and hope until Christ's return. The source of Christian hope in the time of suffering and testing that precedes Christ'S return is what God has already done for us through the death of Christ.

While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.... God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.

The gospel is Matthew's account of Jesus' sending the twelve apostles on mission to "the lost sheep of the house of Israel." It emphasizes both Jesus' compassion for his fellow Israelites, who are called to be God's "special possession" (recall the Exod~ls read-

Matthew 9:35-10:8 ing), and his apostles' share in his miraculous power to manifest God's Kingdom. In the preceding verse, Matthew summarizes Jesus' mission in Galilee (see chapters 5-9): "Jesus went around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness." But Matthew tells us, "At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shephc~rd." The shepherd and the abandoned sheep of his flock are traditional images for the Messiah's task of restoring the twelve tribes, especially after the tragedy of the exile (see Jeremiah 23 and Ezekiel 34). Jesus now turns to his disciples, and, using another Messianic metaphor, that of the farmer gathering his harvest, sends the twelve on mission to share in his work of restoring Israel.

Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'

Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers; drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.

At the end ofthe gospel Jesus will send his apostles to the other nations, and at that point he will also commission them to teach what he has commanded them.

This is abuse, not discipline Dear Mary: Why does a young father use the following methods to discipline his sons, ages 3, 5 and 18 months? . , I. Holler at. the top of his very loud voice.

2. Pick them up roughly by one arm and push them to the floor.

This father doesn't seem to have a clue about how , to, relate to' the child's experience. I have tried my' best to help him and the children. I know why he does these sadistic things. He must not know or he , " 'would stop. It's the why.

Your letter does not explain your relationship to , this situation. You say you have tried to help, but you do not say what you have done. Many questio~s remain unanswered. .

Where is Mom when all this is going on? Is she concerned for her children? Have other people, 'friends and relatives, observed Dad's behavior? If so, have they not also expressed concern?

Apparently Dad has developed a single set pattern - hollering, spanking, painful touch~s- as the only

way to discipline, and he hasn't a clue as to what is appropriate behavior for small children. Apparently Dad sees no problem with his parenting. Given l:hese drcumstances, Dad has no reason to change.

That said, realize that you are, making a vl~ry serious charge. If you truly believe the children are abused, you need to report. But you should not ma.ke an accusation unless you can personally verify YClur charge. . . You seem to have some relationship to a'serious situation. Sterility and Marriage Q. I am engaged to a man who, prior to our engagement, had a vasectomy.

Even though I am post-menopausal, my fiance has offered to have the operation reversed - at his own expense-, since medical insurance will not pay for the reversal.

However, is that necessary? I need advice before I put him to an operation that may not be required morally;'(New York) A. I qon't believe either of you are morally obligated to pursue this surgery.

First, neither his sterility nor yours is an impediment to your marriage. Lots of people marry validly who, fot one reason or anotner, are sterile.

Just to keep things straight, impotence is of course another matter. Physical or emotional inability to have .sexual relations with one's partner invalidates a marnage union between them.

As far as moral obligation is concerned, even were you still able to have children his obligation to attempra reversal of the vasectomy would be at least doubtful.

Since you cannot have children anyway, the old moral axiom applies, "Nemo ad inutile tenetur" (No one is obligated to an action that is useless).

In other words, even were the reversal successful, your marriage would be no more fertile, as far as children are concerned, than it would be in his present condition.

You don't mention your friend's religious background. Whatever it is, since a vasectomy is objectivelya serious violation of one's body, it is important for both of you that he'deal with this fact spiritually and prayerfully before God, if he has not already done so.

A. The inscription isn't too common in our country, but is found on many churches, especially older ones, in parts of Europe.

Among other things, it stands as a reminder that, while places of worship may bededicated "in honur" of St. Peter, or the mother of Jesus, or any other saint, it is God to whom the glory and praise is directed.

I have a suspicion you missed a letter or two, but it's clear the inscription means: Consecrated to the most good and greatest God, in honor of St. Joseph.

One may also see the three letters occasionally on tombstones. Probably for that reason some, have said they mean "Datur Omnibus Mori" (everyone is destined to die).

Even in cemeteries, however, it seems likely that the primary meaning is the first one I mentioned.

Getting this situation well in hand It's time to head off the pending civil war in the pews over hand-holding during the Our Father.

At one time I thought it woulq~be a great idea to divide churches into hand-holding and non-handholding sections like restaurants do with smoking.

However, there has not been a groundswell of support for the suggestion.

In fact, the inventory of day-glow directional signs I had printed for sale to parishes across the country has gone largely unpurchased. My lapel pin idea ("Hand Holder" and "No Way with the Mitt Grabbing, Dude") met a similar fate. Perhaps it's a marketing error on my part.

There's nothing wrong with people wanting to hold hands during Mass at the Our Father. It's just that a lot of people don't want to.

You see, these latter folks often become uncomfortable, agitated, irritable and even downright hostile when the Our Father comes around and they are expected to hold hands.

It's not that they are unfriendly. , It's n,ot that they have a~ything against. handholding in general. ',", It's not that they 40n't wish well tO,all those who enjoy holding hand.s while ~ecitiI?g the Our Fat?er and then raising theIT hands m UnISOil at the end like they were celebrating a slam dunk. . One 70-year-old reader from Madison, WIS., wrote that at the time of the Our Father she would place hh pinky fingers into either nostril at the same time she stuck her thumbs in her ears. While this had the desired effl,:ct - no one insisted she hold hands - it apparently did cause some consternation for her adult children and a legal battle for custody of her estate.

I would have suggested she put her hands together in classic prayer position, raise them to chin level and close her eyes. That ought to do. If s?meone thinks she's just dozing off and punche~ h.er III the shoul~er so she doesn't miss the chance to Jom the palm cham, she could pepper-spray them. .

I suppose hand-holding opponents could Simply say, "No, thank you." On the other hand (no pun

Rev. Henry John Dahl; Rev. Paul Terrence Lamb, Rev. David Arthur Pregana and Rev. Joseph Howard Mauritzen seemed to walk on air as they strode, all smiles, into the cathedral and greeted the excited congregation.

Following the Liturgy of the Word and the sharing of Scripture, the Rite of Ordination was a moving experience for the priestly candidates as well as for those in attendance. It began with the calling and presentation of the candidates. Each candidate responded to his name by saying "present" and coming forward to face the bishop, thereby announcing his readiness and willingness to enter the order of presbyter. After the presentation, Bishop O'Malley elected them for ordination, seeking the consent of the people. With hearty applause, he got it.

The bishop addressed the people, who sat shoulder to shoulder mopping their brows and fanning themselves on the 80-degree day, on the office and duties of priests.

"We must know that we are sinners... ," he said, "to understand how much God loves us." He explained the story of how Peter, after a long night of fishing with no catch, without question cast his nets again at Jesus' request and hauled them in full and nearly breaking. He likened that happening to the call to religious l,ife.

"Again and again," he explained, "we must see his word as more important than status, technology and public opinion."

"Peter said, •At your word, I will do it,'" he continued. "The call is always linked to the Cross, yet there is happiness and many rewards and joys... We rejoice at the brothers that thel--ord has given us as Catholic priests.'"

Bishop O'Malley concluded with a blessing. "Lorq, bless these new priests. Complete what you have begun."

The Rite of Ordination continued with an examination of the candidates. Each affirmed his intention to serve as a priest after the example of Jesus. He also promised obedience and respect to the bishop and his successors.

During the Litany of Saints, the congregation interceded for the candidates as they prostrated themselves before the altar.

Another form of prayer was the imposition of hands on the candidates, an ancient symbol used in most of the sacraments.

Each priest in the assembly took part in the imposition of hands on each candidate, symbolizing the calling down of the Holy Spirit, and, together with a prayer of consecration, the prayers ofthe brother priests formed the heart of the ordination.

The rite was concluded with the anointing of the hands of the newly ordained with the: oil of chrism as a sign that they are set

apart to do God's work and the presentation of the gifts by family members.

Each newly ordained celebrated his first Mass the following day: Father Lamb at St. Jacques, Taunton; Father Dahl at Holy Name, Fall River; Father Mauritzen at St. Lawrence the Martyr, New Bedford; and Father Pregana at St. John the Evangelist, Attleboro.

Living our vows and participating in the life of the Church by prayer and sacraments, gives us the ability to serve God in this apostolate.

We nurse incurable cancer patients in our seven free. modern nursing homes, located in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Georgia and Minnesota.

Many who enter our community have no prior nursing experience, but we all share a great compassion for the suffering poor and delight at being able to help them.

Sacred Hearts Sisters elect regional team

ON THE OCCASION of its 90th birthday, Saint Anne's Hospital, Fall River, founded by the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation (now Dominicans of Hope) in 1906, celebrated by inviting area business people to a Business Leaders Breakfast on June 6. At a recent regional chapter meeting of the Sisters ofthe Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, held at their Hood Street convent in Fall River,.community members elected a regional leadership team to hold office for the next four years.

Named were Sisters Eleanor Cyr, regional vicar; Dolores Pavao, regional superior; and Margarita Denis, regional councilor.

Also present at the meeting were two representatives of the community's general government team, based in Rome, Sisters Maria Javier Echecopar and Maria Beatrlz Montaner, Sister Regina Mary Jenkins, superior of the Hawaiian province of the Sacred Hearts Sisters, to which the Massachusetts region is attached, was in attendance to officiate at and facilitate the chapter meeting.

to bring about renewed commitment to the Sacred Hearts charism and missi on statement, which follows: We are an apostolic community of women religious consecrated to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and are a region ofan international congregation.

We live ourcharism in small communities which are energized by the Eucharist.

HERNDON, VA. (CNS) America's churches, synagogues and temples must fight the dangerous absence of fathers from U.S. families,' speakers said at a recent national Interfaith Summit on Fatherhood held in Herndon, VA. "The current scale of father abserice in America is the most socially consequential problem of our time," said Don E. Eberly, president of National Fatherhood Initiative, the organization that convened the summit.' , He called the absence of fathers from families "the chief contributor to youth violence, teen pregnancy, child poverty, poor educational achievement and a host of other social ills."

Bishop Anthony M. Pilla of Cleveland, president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, was among those who addressed more than 70 religious and community organization leaders at the summit meeting.

"A renewed sense of personal responsibility must be coupled with new social policies if we are to strengthen our families and our nation," he said.

Wade F. Horn, a psychologist who is director of National Father- . hood Initiative and former U.S. Commissioner for Children, Youth and Families, cited statistics 'on the dimensions of the problem in the United States: " - Where there' were.. 7 million childre'il in fatherless homes iri 1960, there are now 23 million about 40· percent of all' U.S. childten. ..'

- In 1960 only one out six mar'riages had ended in divorce;'now it is two out of every five.

People from fatherless homes make up 60 percent of America's rapists, 72 percent of adolescent murderers and 70 percent of the country's long-term prison population.

"When fathers are absent from homes, boys tend to be more violent and girls tend to become more sexually,active," said Horn.

He said psychologica:l studies have shown that with a good father. as a role model, "boys learn to keep their emotions in check." For girls, a warm, loving father is a critical .faCtor in avoiding early sexual.acting out, he added. . "We have a long way to go before society begins to take it seriously," he said.

Bishop Pilla agreed with thl: call for a restored sense of personal responsibility for family life among fathers but said that "fatherhood must sink roots into two worlds -the world of marriage and the world of work - if it is to be a stable reality in the lives of <:hildren and in the community," he said. "Or, to put it another way, ·take away a good marriage and/ or a good job, and you make it much more likely that a.man will become just a~other absent father," He also warned against a temptation to rigid moralism. "We must be, on the one hand, as clear as possible that· fatherhood should always occur within marriage and, on the other'hand, realistic enough to acknowledge it does not in every instance," he said.

He described' the wide range of pastoral and educational ministri.es the Catholic Church conducts to support better marriages, couple relationships aQd family life and suggested that religious leaders "consider how we might share our resources in order to become churches which are truly marriage builders within out local communities."
