CCA climbs to $852,035

Love your students. Challenge and push your students. Those were the twin messages delivered by Dr. Elinor Ford, keynote speaker for the 25th annual diocesan Catholic Education Convention, held last Friday at Bishop Connolly High School, Fall River. The speaker, articulate, funny, but deadly serious, is vice-president and pUblisher of the William H. Sadlier textbook publishing company. Holder of three doctorates, an experienced teacher and the former superintendent of schools for the New York archdiocese, she has spoken in 140 of the 165 U.S. Catholic dioceses. ,Poking fun at "university types who spray elementary educators with new theories yearly," she said that results have included dividing "35 kids into 72 reading groups," producing socially poised and verbally articulate youngsters who can't add 3 and 2, and devising "mod_ ular flexible schedule" high school programs so complex that instructors simply "look for the room with no teacher to find out where they should be." But methods, she stressed, have little to do with how a child learns. No child, she said, can study successfully if he or she does not perceive that someone in his life loves him. "You can't have a good adulthood if you haven't had a good childhood," she declared, telling the teachers that the most important message they can give Tum to Page Two

Bishop celebrates Santo Christo feast Bishop Daniel A. Cronin returned to Fall River Monday after a one week visit to the Azores, where he joined Bishop Aurelio Escudeiro Granada in observance of the feast of Santo Christo, a major Azorean celebration. The bishop delighted his hosts

on the island of St. Michael by addressing them in Portuguese, both when he presided at the dedication of a convent and when he celebrated the Santo Christo feastday Mas. During his week in the islands, Bishop Cronin viewed earthquake damage on Terceira and Sao Jorge. He had previously forwarded $90,000 in relief funds to Bishop Granada to aid victims of the New Year's Day dis-

aster. The money was the proceeds of a special collection taken up in the Fall River diocese imediately after the quake. The bishop was accompanied to the Azores by Msgr. John J. Oliveira, diocesan vice-chancellor, and Msgr. Luiz G. Mendonca, vicar general.

Honor Roll More parishes have been added to the Honor: Roll of parishes surpassing their 1979 final totals since last week's edition of The Anchor. These parishes are St. Joan of Arc, Orleans; Holy Rosary, St. Louis, SS. Peter & Paul, St. Roch, St. Stanislaus, Santo Christo, Fall River. St. Louis de France, St. Michael, Swansea; Immaculate Conception, New Bedford; St. Rita, Marion; St. Peter, Dighton. More than in any previous year, said Msgr. Anthony M. Gomes, diocesan director of the Appeal, generosity is needed on the part of contributors in order to offset the effects of inflation upon the many apostolic works dependent upon Appeal success to continue their longstanding tradition of service to the needy.
