Pilot program for priests takes flight By MIKE GORDON ANCHOR STAFF
BREWSTER - Priests from around the country gathered at the Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club April 26-28 to take part in the pilot program, "Leading from the Heart: Presiding at Eucharist." Co-sponsored by rhe Georgetown Center for Liturgy and The National Organization for Continuing Education of Roman Catholic Clergy, it offered priests an opportunity to discuss and examine their ministry as presider through group presentations and one-on-one sessions where video taped Masses were viewed and reviewed by presenters. "We had a nice cross section of people from across the country and the program was a success," said Father Mark R. Hession, pastor of Our Lady of Victory in Centerville and president of NOCERCC. The program helps priests to improve the quality of their pre-
siding and that is a good thing according to Father Hession because "lay people are looking for more from us. We hope to have the kingdom become more alive." Each day of the conference featured several hours for presentation and discussion, time for prayer and song and the celebration of Eucharist. Presentations on topics including "The Spirituality and Craft of Presiding," "Presiding at the Table of the Word," and "Presiding at the Table of the Eucharist," were facilitated by a . team from The Georgetown Center for Liturgy. Father Hession hopes that the program will eventually be offered to dioceses around the country as several programs like "Renewing Sunday Preaching," already are. The pilot program will be offered in the Diocese of St. Paul Minnesota this fall and can be implemented in other places several months after that. .Turn to page 16 - Pilot
Catholic Charities is 'off and running' FALL RIVER - Off and running - that's the status of the 63 rd annual Catholic Charities Appeal here in the Diocese of Fall River. This past Sunday was the official beginning of the annual springtime Appeal in the parishes all across southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the Islands. As in the past, all of the groundwork has been put into place by the area directors, pastors, and parish committees to begin this parish-based campaign to solicit support for the charitable endeavors of the diocese. This support, which reached an all-time high last year with a total collected of $3,674,844, is needed to flind the nearly 30 agencies and apostolates sup-
ported by the annual Catholic Charities Appeal. Last year saw a slight increase in the number of contributors across the diocese, with 75 percent of all parishes exceeding their previous year's total. Msgr. Thomas Harrington, director of Catholic Charities, noted the significance of the increase in donors in recent comments: "An increase in the number of parishioners "sharing" what they have with those who have so much less, really is the only way to lessen the mental, emotional, and physical suffering of those in need." Michael Donly, director of Development for the diocese, noted that "The Appeal really is Turn to page 13 - Appeal
