B)' Dave Jolivet The year 2000 is $till nearly four years away, but for Pope John Paul II and the flock he shepherds, the celebration has already begun.

The pontiff has expressed a need for the Catholic Church to prepare now for the new millennium by renewing our· commitment and dedication to Jesus Christ. The pope has designated the next four years to be a time of deepening our faith and reviving olir enthusiasm for living and spreading the Gospel message.

In unity with the pope's wishes, Bishop Sean O'Malley has scheduled a Mass at St. Mary's Cathedra'l, Fall River, on February II at 5 p.m. to kick off the diocese's commemoration of the third Christian millennium, Jubilee2000. The Mass is the first of what will be many diocesan activities that will unite us with the Holy Father and his millennium preparations.

Bishop O'Malley has named Father Richard W. Beaulieu as chairman of the Jubilee 2000 Committee. "This is an exciting time, the Holy Father is extending an invitation for Catholics to become aware that Jesus is the center of our lives," said Father Beaulieu.

"You're going to find some people who look upon the year 2000 with

doom and gloom, but we are a people of hope, and we look forward to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of our Lord."

Father Beaulieu explained that the celebration is a four-year event conceived by the pope. 1996 is dedicated to the anticipation of the new millennium, a time for Catholics to understand and renew our faith; 1997 is dedicated to Jesus,

the sacrament of baptism and Mary as our Blessed Mother; 1998 will be devoted to the Holy Spirit, the sacrament of confirmation and the gifts of the Holy Spirit; 1999 will honor God the Father, the sacrament of penance and reconciliation, a renewed appreciation of God's love for His people and our love for our neighbors; and the year 2000 will be dedicated to the

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and Mary as Mother of the Church.

I n his homily at the February II Mass, Bishop O'Malley will lead the diocese into the millennium celebration.

New Diocesan Pastoral Council During the liturgy, Bishop O'Malley will install members of the newly formed Diocesan Pastoral Council. The bishop is in the process of selecting the council from a list of recommendations. "The Diocesan Pastoral Council isanalogous to parish councils in that a consultative body will meet and provide suggestions and feedback regarding pastoral work," said Msgr. George W. Coleman.

The plan is to have a council made up of religious and laity.

There will be two representatives from each of the five deaneries, from various diocesan apostolates as well as representatives of the women and men religious in the diocese. Father John C. Ozug will serve as council secretary.

Obituaries Sister Condon Sister Sean Mary Condon,RSM, 53, of East Providence, RJ. has recently passed away.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late J. Harry Condon Sr. and the late Miriam (Bowen) Condon, she lived in East Providence for the past 20 years. She was a kindergarten teacher at Woodlawn Catholic Regional School in Pawtucket for the past 20 years. , Baptized Marilyn Louise Condon, she entered the sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1960, and was professed Aug. 16, 1963. She also taught in several other schools including St. Killian School, New Bedford.

She is survived by a brother, J. Harry Condon Jr. of Attleboro; three sisters, Mim Condon of East Providence, Geraldine A. Lavery of North Attleboro and Judith M. Goetz of Chari ottsville, Va.

Roland L. Levesque Roland L. Levesque, 74, of Fox Island, Wa., brother of Rev. Rene Levesque, died recently. He was the husband of Nora E. Levesque.

Born in Fall River, 'he was the son of the late Romeo Napoleon Levesque and the late Adela (Remy) Levesque.

He served in the U.S. Navy until his retirement.

Besides his wife and Rev. Levesque', he' is survived by two

daughters, Adele Brook and Laura Levesque; another brother', Norman of Fall River; two grand:children and several nieces and nephews.

Sister Goyette Sister Marcelle Therese, P. M. (Antoinine Goyette), 87, of Presentation of Mary Academy, Hudson, N.H. died recently. .

She was born in Magog, Quebec, Canada, daughter of the late Amedee and Ernestine (Lemerise) Goyette. , She attended St.Anne's School and Dominican Academy in Fall River.

She entered into the Order of the Presentation of Mary on Feb. II, 1926, and took vows of profession on July 26, 1928.

She taught at various levels in schools in Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph Louis Goyette of Fall River; two sisters, Louise (Goyette) Hetland and Lucille Goyette, and many nieces and nephews.

About 100 people gathered in sparse groups, rows between them, in the Bishop Connolly High School auditorium, Fall River, for what was advertised by the Young Adult Ministry as a concert of Christian music to benefit the diocesan AIDS ministry.

What it turned out to be was a choir, 100 strong, lifting their voices in praise to the risen Christ.

Four acts took the Connolly stage and each invited the audience, which needed little encouragement, to stand, clap their hands, sing and dance to the energizing rhythms their giant speakers put forth.

Mark Gabriel Girardin and his band, first in the lineup, successfully handled the difficult task of "warming up" the audience with a mix of contemporary Christian rock, reggae, and even a blues guitar solo that was pleasingly reminiscent of Eric Clapton's sweet melodies. One member of Girardin's group was Walter Person, a seventh grader at St. Matthew's school, Cranston, RI, where Girardin is director of music.

Girardin, aside from his many praise and wor~hip songs, also composed "Christsong," which he calls "a celebration of the life of Jesus with sacred music, dance, and mime." Rhode Islanders, he and his group have performed in many cities in the U.S. and abroad as well as for the Vatican and on EWTN. "Brethren," a "group of four men who love Jesus and love music," shared their gifts next with a unique blend of country, folk, and rock. Rhode Island based family m'en;they all serVe in their local churches, as music ministers.

"The music we play fosters a personal relationship with Jesus and keeps to a very simple Gospel message of our need for Him and His love and sacrifice for us," said Ray Tierney, the group's lead singer and composer.

The show took on a very prayerful tone as Kevin Doyle, an extremely talented performer who plays a variety of .instruments, gave his witness. A Baptist youth minister, he toured with Aerosmith, Steve' Miller Band, Muddy Water, and Al Cooper before he came to know the Lord. His blend of secular and sacred music draws. attention to his great love for God. "Go home tonight with Jesus," he

'said, "with the destination of Heaven."

The concert's headliner was John Polce, a Rhode Island native and a part of the Christian music scene for the last 20 years. Polce started his music career as a country and western singer, but when he came to know Christ he felt he' was called to minister through his music. With a powerful voice that could bring one to cheer or to tears, his mastery of the guitar and , prayerful countenance touched many.'

He closed the program by asking all the musicians to the stage to unite their talents and voices in a rousing rendition of "Oh, Happy Day!" He also invited the audience to gather at the front for a moving "Amazing Grace."

"I was very impressed with the musicians," said Bud Miller, coordinator of Young Adult Ministry, a brand new diocesan endeavor, which sponsored the program. "It was the first time these bands had ever played together. The program was very successful and it was everything I expected it to be-. I'm really pleased."

The Young Adult Ministry is the Church's response to the needs ' of people in their 20s and 30s. The idea is that the group thatforms, through social, educational, spiritual, and service activities will "own" the ministry. "Rather than

offering fixed programs," wrote Miller in the group's vision statement, "the process changes and evolves as young adults develop the ministry. The talents that young adults discover in themse:lves are to be encouraged ..."

The ministry is run on eight components: evangelization, catechesis, community building, prayer and worship, pastoral ca re and guidance, justice/ peace/ ~;ervice, enablement and advocacy. The programs the ministry will run are designed tci reach out to proclaim the Good News and promote growth through teaching that emphasizes understanding and reflection. The ministry hopes to build a group that can enhance p,~rsonal prayer lives, develop sou rces of support and a social consciousness', empower members to identify and exercise their personal gifts and speak for young adults before the Church and the :;ecular community.

By Christine Vieira Mills Sister Ann Marie Phillips, SUSC, an English teacher who has traveled the east coast promoting the mission of the Holy Unlon sisters, walked into her classroom at St. Anthony of Padua, Fall River, in March, 1994, with perhaps several more butterflies in her stomach than in her days "at Sacred Heart Academy in the 1960s.

42 students were enrolled each eager to learn, but they were not adolescents on their first day of high school or children at CCD class. With high hopes, they came as adults to begin a serious undertaking: to learn English as a second language, reinvent their lives, and boost their self-esteem.

"When you don't speak the language very well," reme'mbers one man who immigrated to the United States 20 years ago, "you lose part of yourself. Many people don't realize that you can even lose your sense of humor because you just can't communicate your point."

Called by her order from Baltimore, where she had sc~rved as an ed ucator in the health ministries, Sister Ann Marie was asked to make some changes in local ministries and to work among the poor.

Shocked by the education statistics in the area, she decided that her mission would be to set up classes in order to integrate an adult literacy program with faith development and Christian spirituality.

The Basic English for Lifelong Learning (B. E. L. L.) project, sponsored by Catholic Soci,al Services, provides the tools and incentives to lead the adult to become a selfmotivated learner, equipped to undertake further forlrilWed'tJca~' tion. It prepares theinfor'Citizenship and civic responsibility and promotes inculturation while respecting the person's native heritage.

"I always felt that the Church needed to help people become inculturated," said Sister Ann Marie. "Many people won't go to school for a class, but they will go to their church. They feel a special bond and they are excited to communicate their faith in a new language." Beginners learn their daily prayers and the prayers of the Mass in English and as they master the language, bible study is the focus. Advanced learners will add dimension by discussing current religious topics and have a chance to share their views.

The calendar provides holidays and breaks between semesters since most of the participants, typically middle aged women, are working people with many family and other responsibilities. "I even go to o/1e woman's home for a private session," said Sister Ann Marie, who also tutors at Bristol Community College in Fall River. "I teach her to read children's books so she can read to her children."

Sister Ann Marie cites health education as one of the major focuses in the program. "It's important that people know how to communicate their 9wn health concerns," she said. "It is embar-

rassing for a parent when she has to bring her young child as an interpreter into the doctor's office with her. Unders,tanding their own bodies empowers people and lifts their self-esteem.'; As a special program, she has recruited the services of a nurse educator to provide a health program this spring.

A part of the program will be the citizenship training aspect. "I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support I have received in this entire project," she said. Sister Ann Marie spoke of the enthusiasm with which Catholic Social Service took over the sponsorship of the project and the eager help

The 15-session citizenship class will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8:15 p.m. starting Febr\lary 13 at Santo Christo Church, Fall River.

As the program expands and increasing numbers request the B.E.L.L. services, Sister Ann Marie says that the need for volunteers becomes crucial. "Right now we have seven tutors and two teachers.

I hope to run a tutor training course soon so we can provide the services to meet the demand."

Sister Ann Marie Phillips, devoted to this cause, has many ideas on future expansion. "I'd like to get this started in other parishes and form an inter-parish board to provide this needed service on a

larger scale. I would also like to work toward a resource center to provide books, videos and other tools to aid the learning process."

Each year we mark Catholic Press Month. This February is ,no exception. Thus it comes as no surprise that we also take this time to have our annual Anchor renewal drive. Fifty weeks a year more than thirty thousand copies of our diocesan paper are mailed to subscribers. The-diocese is most grateful to all who make this possible especially the parish priests who have given such loyal support over the years. The newspaper staff is most grateful for their cooperation.

More and more it should become obvious that the local church, must use all the means at its disposal to disseminate church news. The secular media so often reports church events only When they are negative or sensational. The positive and the sustaining are too often ignored. There is hardly a week that goes by that Qur diocesan office of communications¡does not forward to our media outlets pertinent information. The effort on the part of our local church to inform and cooperate with the secular media is an effective ongoing process. There are many in this media who have been very helpful. Yet, the story of our church as it unfolds day to day must be told primarily by our own media efforts. In this regard The Anchor tries its very best to fulfill this mission.

Jesus' challenge to hill disciples in today's gospel is also addressed to us who live in a culture that is as "flat" and "blind" as was the world of Jesus' own day. As we struggle to be faithful to Jesus' commission, let us pray with confidence the refrain of this Sunday's responsorial psalm: "The just one is a light in darkness to the upright" (Ps 112).

The Isaiah reading was spoken in the dark days imml~diately after the return of the Babylonian exiles to Jerusalem when they found their city and temple in ruins.

In'stead of caring for the poor and homeless, they selfishly pursued their own business, while conducting meaningless fasts.

Lo, on your fa!;t day you carry out your own pursuits, and drive all your laborers, Yes, your fast ends in quarreling and fighting, striking with wicked claw. (Isa 58:3-4) In God's name, the prophet demands: This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke,.

(Isa 58:6-7) Only after Israel rectifies the injustices in its midst will it be healed and become a light for a darkened world (58:8).

The second reading continues Paul's attack on the worldly factionalism among tht: Corinthians.

He reminds them that his initial preaching of the gospel was not done "with any particular elo-

quence or wisdom." Rather, he spoke only of "Jesus Christ and him crucified." As befits a message about a crucified Messiah, he came to them "in weakness and fear, and with much trepidation." For Paul, the success of the Christian gospel does not depend up0!1 the preacher's gift for "persuasive" and "wise argumentation," like some worldly sophist, but on "the convincing power of the Spirit" working through weak human instruments who reflect the message of the cross in their own lives. The cross is God's "mysterious" and "hidden" wisdom which "the rulers of this age" cannot understand, as is proven by their crucifying "the Lord of glory." Paul uses a quote from Isaiah to present God's paradoxical wisdom.

But as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him," God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

The gospel continues last Sunday's reading which ended with the beatitude for those persecuted for the sake of the gospel (Matt 5:11-12). Now Jesus uses two striking metaphors to alert his disciples to the importance of their role in the world. Tht:y are to be "the salt of the earth" and "the light of the world." Salt was important in Jesus' world as both a spice and a preservative. Both, qualities apply to the disciples' task.'They must both challenge the world with Jesus' teachings and preserve the deepest meaning of God's Torah (see Matt 10, 18, 28). But Jesus ends with a threat of judgment.

But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is 'no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. (5: 13) Strictly speaking, salt cannot lose

its taste, but in Judaism it can become unclean when tainted with too many impurities, and then it has to be thrown out. The disciples are warned that, despite their call, they may lose all if they are unfaithful in time of persecution. , The light image is based on the tradition in the first reading from Isaiah. A traditional Jewish hope was that Israel and the city of Jerusalem would become "a light for the nations" by manifesting God's justice (see Isa 2: 1-5; 42: 1-9).

Notice that although the disciples' "good deeds" are to be like "a city

set on a mountain top" and "a light set on a lampstand to give light to all in the house," they are not to draw attention to themselves, but to bring the nations to God ..

Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

(Matt 5:16)

Chaplain's days are IOllg TUZLA, Bosnia-Herzegovina (CNS) - Air Force Maj. Steve Booth stretches his legs and leans back into the upholstery of a wellworn brown couch.

It has been a long day: The major, who is also Father Booth, Catholic chaplain, awoke well before dawn, walked the length and breadth of his parish, spoke with dozens of congregants and attended a town meeting that went into overtime over a handful of administrative matters in which he is personally involved.

And now, before he can have his belated supper, he has to face a reporter.

He smiles, stretches again, ·and states: "I love my job. What more can I say?"

He has a lot to say. Father Booth, 47, is stationed at a U.S. military base in Tuzla, and every day is long, and every day is different. '''1 tell people with absolutely no tongue in cheek that every day I get up and thank God I'm a .priest," he says, "especially an Air .

Force priest."

Father Booth's military career started during the Vietnam War. He says he joined the Reserve Officers Training Corps while in college in order to avoid the draft.

He went on active duty in 1971 and was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. His first assignment overseas was on an air base in South Korea, where he served as a pilot for one year. . Soldiers like to joke that Father Booth became a pilot to get closer to God. Later, he took a different approach to God by becoming a priest.

Father Booth has never seen combat, but says he understands the troops' needs because most of their time in Bosnia is spent on the base and not in the field. Here, he says, they "suffer from an exaggerated form of cabin fever" be~ cause they cannot leave camp except to go on patrol.

The U.S. troops are also not allowed to drink alcohol, unlike their counterparts' from other countries participating in Operation Joint Endeavor - some of whom live on the base.

"Our young men and women here have very few outlets for stress and heartache," he sa'ys.

"Luckily, a lot of them come to the church or to see a chaplain. They're going through the same faith crises as other people do in their late teens and early 20s -:- and then some." .

"Dear John" letters from frustrated spouses and partners have started coming ·by mail. Several soldiers married just before their deployment, only to find themselves now facing divorce. Those with sound marriages or love relationships back home miss their loved ones more than they expected.

Father Booth says that even though his vow of celibacy prohibits him from having first-hand experience with these frustrations, he can still identify with the soldiers.

"I've also counseled alcoholics and people dying of cancer without going through those tests myself," he adds. .

But some of the experiences of

this a'ssignment are entirely new to Father Booth. As an Air Force chaplain for the last eight years, he was accustomed to operating on what he calls "a parish model," waiting for troops to come to him in a location separate from their housing quarters.

Now he lives with the soldiers and spends more time. mingling with them than conducting services and confessions in seclusion.

"In fact," he says, "today was so busy that I took a confession with someone while walking around the camp."

Certain complications of life on base also came as a surprise, Bootp says.

"We do a lot of paperwork," he says. "And we take part in the regular(base) 'Mayors' Meeting,' where the administrative matters like trash collection and disposaL are discussed." .

Father Booth praises the efficiency with which he says the basic camp operations are run. But he also has been upset from time to time.. Recently the camp chapel was converted into a communications center, and the chairs and makeshift altar were replaced with computers, files and desks. The chaplains' offices are soon to be moved as well.

Father Booth complained about the change and the military newspaper, Stars and Stripes, put the story on its front page.

He says his superior chewed him out, and now the Air Force major is more circumspect about the subject.

At the moment, services are held in three locations, depending on what day it is.

Father Booth says he is satisfied with the arrangement and eagerly awaits the use oflarger offices and a bigger room meant to be converted into a chapel.

He points out that the original chapel was first used as a bar for NATO troops, and the new chapel used to serve as a drinking facility for the Norwegian soldiers..

"We have been sort of the Carry Nation of this base," he says, laughing. "We've been turning bars into chapels since we arrived."

If ever things get to be too tough for Father Booth to handle, he can always head home. Every military chaplain requires the recommen~ dation of an endorsing agent from his deno.mination in the United States, recognized by the Department of Defense, which certifies he is a fully ordained me'mber of the denomination's clergy and qualified to be a chaplain. In the case of Catholic chaplains, that agent is . the Archdiocese for the Military Services, U.S.A. A call to that agent from the chaplain who wanted out would end his military service.

Father Booth says the idea to quit has never crossed his mind, but if it does, he knows what he will do.

"I don't think there's anything more detrimental to the Gospel than an unhappy Christian, and especially an.unhappy minister of the Gospel," he says.

"If I can't serve happily, if I'm not happy in being a military chaplain," he says, "the kindest thing I can do - not only for the Air Force, but also for the people that I serve - is to get out and to go where I can be happy."

But there's that smile once more.

It didn't surprise me that a new book about Mother Teresa hit the best-seller lists immediately. After all, this nun who founded the Missio'naries of Charity in I ndia, is an incredible witness to something we all want to believe - that love is ,alive and well in our world.

When I picked up the latest book, "Mother Teresa, A Simple Path," (Ballantine), I.hadn't expected that most of it would be testimony from those who have joined this nun in helping her aid 'the poor and the dying.

And each of them affirms that the force behind the work is what Mother Teresa has ·taught: "It's not how much we do, but how much·l.ove we put into the doing."

I was particularly moved by Penny's story. Recently divorced, she had landed in Calcutta on a stopover to Australia. She went to the YWCA to stay and was immediately welcomed by a volunteer coordinator for the rv1issionaries of Chariiy.

The keys to a successful raffle My neighbor and I came away from a recent All Saints parish council meeting a little downhearted. There had been a number of young Catholics there. Bud and I were rattled at how little they really understo(ld a number of traditions.

For example, the tradition of only singing during Mass at Christmas. Bingo was another. Men'sclub crab feeds was an ey'e-opener.

But the one on the agenda raffles .- stunned us. How could the powerful tradition of raffles become so watered-down in so short a time?

Rather than be complainers, however. Bud and I offered to give a presentation soon on the tradition, techniques alld theology of Catholic raffles, which are distinct from, say. Baptist or Lutheran raffles .-- largely because the money raised usually goes to Catholic things.

We would start by explaining that the planning for a Catholic raffle begins by brainstorming to think of something someone could donate that lots of people would like to have - like a condo on Maui or a large-screen television the size of a garage door - and then settle on an item such as a 1983 Ford Escort with three hubcaps.

Next, you print up millions of tickets on yellow construction paper and run them off on the mimeograph machine. After these are all smudged, you cut them out with dull scissors and staple them into bundles of somewhere between a dozen and 40. depending on how good a stapler you have.

Continuing, you shove fistfuls of these into the hands of everyone you know, coercing them into selling them to friends and strangers. or just writing you a check to get . you off their backs.

Bud and I want our young brothers and sisters in the parish to also be a ware of the deeper secrets of truly successful raffle ticket sales: such as exploiting children.

For example. station a pair of 5-year-olds at a card table at the exit of Safeway. They will be able to sell rame tickets - or individual walnuts for that mailer·, faster than you could give away $1 gourmet candy bars running doorto-door.

I once bought four tickets from a 6-year-old selling them for his soccer team. He told me they were $1 each orfourfor$5.ljust sensed he was from a good Catholic upbringing.

Also, one nice thing about going outside the parish family to promote your raffle is the sense of ecumenism - that is, you reach out to some affluent Protestants. well-oiled agnostics and tightwad atheists.

Of course, Vatican II toned this down a lillie.

Saint Anne's participates in heart health TV John C. Pedrotty, M.D., medical staff member at Saint Anne's Hospital, Fall River, recently participated in a regionally televised program aimed toward educating the general public about heart health.

The program, entitled "Heart Digest," aired January 21 on WBZ- TV Channel 4, Boston.

"Heart Digest" is a joint venture' between WBZ-TV and the Caritas Christi Heart System of which Saint Anne's Hospital is a member.

It aims to bring important healthcare information to the general public. The half-hour programs will air quarterly and will highlight different topics. The first program included information focused on heart health, gene therapy, heart attacks, and exercise. The three Caritas Christi hospitals featured in the. inaugural program are Saint

But they weren't being partisan.

Adams is a longtime mc:mber and past parish council president there.

Adams credits the influence of the Catholic Church, induding his education by Franciscan nuns, with helping him to attain the highest political office in Georgia's oldest city.

Though his parents were not Catholic, Adams' father was educated at Most Pure Heart of Mary School, one of three Catholic grammar schools that concentrated on giving black Savannahians a superior education during the days of racially segn:gated public education throughout the South.

His mother, Wilh(:lmina, so valued a parochial education that she enrolled Floyd Jr. in first grade at age 5. When another family who wanted the slot for their child pointed out that the boy was too young, she kept him in first grade for two years to ensure he would not lose his place.

Adams recalled that the Franciscans were "aggressive" in those days about urging their students to become Catholics, so he and his siblings were baptized when Floyd Jr. was 7. Making the public aware of the "trash talk" of these TV shows is the aim of "Turn Off TV Day '1996," an effort by the Morality in Media organization to get volunteers to boycott TV (on Feb. 9) and to monitor the TV talk shows every weekday in February.

Morality in Media argues that the II talk shows that dominate daytime TV routinely provide a national platform for immoral values.

Each monitor will be asked to watch just one of these shows for a week - five hours at most in all.

They wilI"report back to Morality in Media (a 34-year-old interfaith organ,ization working to uphold . decency standards in the media) at week's end, using a form that calls for information on each show such as topics, products advertised and the monitor's reaction to the show.

Because February is a sweeps month, the time when TV netw6rks work hard to boost their share of the audience and with it, their advertising rates, Morality in Media predicts that the talk shows . will be' serving up as much sleaze as possible during that month.

Morality in Media will use the information gathered by the monitors to document the case against the talk shows. This information will be made available to the Federal Communications Commission, members of Congress, TV executives and talk show producers. It will also be given to national advertisers who provide the money that keeps these' shows in business.

Dino Corbin, general manager of KHSL-TV, Channel 12 in Chico-Redding, Cal., a few months ago made the courageous decision to pull the Jenny Jones show from the station's programming.

In a recent letter to Bishop William K. Weigand, of the Sacramento diocese, Corbin noted, "I had no idea that canceling the Jenny Jones show would have such a profound effect throughout this country. I expected to have some negative feedback because the show· was rated No. 2 in the . time period when I canceled it in October. To my surprise, the support, warmth and blessing of this country have overwhelmed me. I ha ve been afforded a national forum to speak to the good that' still is America.... .

"The .awareness and outcry against this type of programming as a result of my decision cannot be ignored by other station managers or the people that produce

these programs. The end result can only be a positive step for our children and everyone in this country. We in this industry have forgotten that we have the power, obligation and ability to stand for so much more in our society."

Corbin told The Catholic Herald, the Sacramento dioc'esan newspapers that to date he has received some 2,500 cards, letters, e-mail and calls, and eight of those were negative to his stand. In addition, five TV talk shows have been canceled by their producers. Corbin says he has personally viewed five or six new proposed TV talk shows and their content is "180 degrees different" from many of the topics currently being aired.

Bishop Weigand has encouraged parent groups throughout the diocese to write letters of support to Corbin, given the possibility that his station may have to defend his actions (in canceling Jenny Jones) in court.

Turn Off TV Day and the monitoring effort are only part of the

job that TV viewers, and parents especially, are called to do in order to combat the corrupting influence of irresponsibly produced TV shows. .

Many other things can be done, including: be selective about what you watch; control what your children watch; when you see something you don't like,. speak out; speak out in support of good shows ("Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" and "Touched By an Angel" are two examples); send letters to local TV stations, networks, local cable systems, advertisers and local newspapers; and send detailed notes or tapes to the Federal Communications Commission in Washington.

Hurricane-battered St. Thomas still trying to recover CHARLOTTE AMALIE, Virgin Islands (CNS) -- The first Sunday after Hurricane Marilyn hit the U.S. Virgin Islands, the entrance theme at Mass at the cathed ral in Charlotte Amalie was "To Be Alive."

That song became a rallying cry for life after the storm, said Bishop Elliot G. Thomas, who heads the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands.

The hurricane hit Sept. 14, damaging many of diocesan properties and homes on the three islands that make up the diocese - St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. Among the structures affected were Bishop Thomas' residence and the office of the Catholic Islander, the diocesan newspaper.

In an interview with The Florida Catholic, newspaper of the Orlando Diocese, which sponsored a Christmas charity drive for the islands, Bishop Thomas said the spiritual and material support of Catholic Charities USA and many of his fellow bishops has helped keep him going.

In late December, power still had not been restored in some areas and the chancery had been

able to get only one phone line of three back in service..

After waiting out the hurricane away from the bishop's residence, Bishop Thomas returned two days later to see his home had been destroyed. It was a bleak sight.

"I was looking through the rubble for my passport and I saw new vestments that I had never worn, and I began to feel a little depressed," he said. Just then, he saw the son of an old friend, who attends daily Mass at one of the island churches.

"He said to me, 'God will never lead you where his grace will not sustain you,''' he said. "I needed to hear that."

Bishop Thomas said the deep faith that sustained the people of the islands after Hurricane Marilyn has been an inspiration to him in the months of cleaning up and trying to return to normal.

Now, restoring the damaged roof of the Cathedral of $ts. Peter and Paul is a priority for Bishop Thomas.

"I have every confidence we will survive," he said. "Every time I feel like giving up I read my favorite

The president, who graduated from Jesuit-run Georgetown University in Washington, made the comment in a message for 1996 Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 29Feb. 4.

In the message, he congratulated "the parents, students, teachers, administrators and alumni of our nation's Catholic schools for your dedication to excellence and your commitment to the American traditions of charity and responsibility."

Looking ahead to the next century, Clinton said "we must recognize that excellence in education is the key to our nation's future."

"At a time when we face difficult choices about how best to strengthen that future, our I:ommitment to education and to children must stand absolutely firm - we have a

sacred obligation to put children's needs first and to make the essential investments that will help them succeed," he added.

Clinton said Catholic schools "have always recognized and honored that obligation" to children.

"We can't even plug in the computer because the wiring was destroyed by water," said Ms. Conway, who has taken up temporary residence in a convent. "Also the photography supplies and the darkroom were ruined when the ceiling collapsed and the phone isn't working. Obviously it is frustrating not being able to publish."

Beyond damage to the newspaper's property, its advertising will be hurt because local businesses are hurting.

Pope to. visit 'countrie~ mired in war and 'poverty v ATICAN CITY (CNS) - A dozen years ago Pope John l?aulll visited Central American nations mired in civil war, human rights violations and poverty.

He will return to three of those countries in early February to be welcomed by democratically elected presidents and a host of church and civic .leaders who had or have key roles in negotiating a formal end to their nations' conflicts.

But poverty, social unrest and violent crime are still part of the reality Pope John Paul will see during his 69th foreign papal trip, which will take him to Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador Feb. 5-9, then on to Venezuela Feb. 9-11.

For the Central American segment of the trip, the pope will be based in Guatemala ~ity, taking day trips to San Salvador and Managua, Nicaragua.

But his first day trip, a flight to Esquipulas, Guatemala, will highlight the key elements of the entire visit: papal encouragement for the deep traditional Catholic faith of the majority 'of the region's people and their desire for peace and reconciliation.

The pope is going to Esquipulas

to mark the 400th anniversary of devotion to an image of Christ brought there by the Spaniards.

"Pilgrims prostrate themselves at the foot of the 'Black Christ,' as those devoted to the sacred image affectionately call it, expressing their joysand hopes, their sorrows and anguish and imploring bless~ ings from th~ Most High," the pope said in December.

While Esquipulas is a center of popular piety, it also has become a

symbol of hope for peace through negotiation. .

The roots of the various peace accords reached in tJ1e region in the 1990s go back to a 1986 summit in Esquipulas of the presidents of Guatemala, Nicaragua, EI Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica.

The meeting laid the groundwork for the 1987 Central American peace accords, which committed the governments of each country to' a cease-fire and the

beginning of negotiations with' guerrilla or opposition groups within their borders.

The Guatemalan peace talks, aimed at ending fighting that has dragged on for more than 35 years, still continue, but several important agreements have been signed, and a U.N. peacekeeping mission has been set up.

The return of refugees who fled to Mexico is one of the clearest signs of progress toward peace in Guatemala, but the returnees' reception also highlights the continuing problem of human rights abuses and violence, often at the hands of the army or police.

In October, II returnees were killed and more than 30 others were injured by an army patrol, which claimed it had been threatened. Catholic Church and other human rights investigators concluded that the killings were deliberate and unprovoked.

The U.N. peace mission's statement about the shootings said members of the Guatemalan military continue to identify the refugees as guerrillas, a view which was at the root of much of the' military violence against people in the rural areas in the '1980s and caused the refugees to flee in the first place. .

Pope John Paul's trip to Central America will highlight the hard work required to stabilize coun~ tries even after a formal peace is declared.

The bishops' conference of EI Salvador has said the pope will find "dramatic and serious" social problems that make real peace and reconciliation impossible in the country, even four years after the war ended. " "We cann9t live in peace while e~treme pove.rty, la<;k, o~s,trcuri\Y and unemployment have such a cruel impact on so many brothers and sisters," the conference said in a Jan. 19 statement.

In each of the countries the pope is expected to speak about the church's role in social and political questions - a role that he has said must never become partisan, but must offer clear principles about respecting human rights, helping the poor, overcoming injustice and promoting the common good.

Pope John Paul will be welcomed to San Salvador by Arch, bishop Fernando Saenz Lacalle, whom he appointed last April.

When he was appointed, the archbishop - a member of Opus Dei who had led Salvador's military ordinariate - said he would work for peace and justice in the country, but would not continue his predecessors' practice of using . the Sunday sermon to denounce human rights abuses and injustice in the country.

"The homily is not for making political denunciations," he said.

"The priest must not speak about politics .... It's not my role to criticize anyone."

Pope John Paul graphically illustrated the point when he visited Nicaragua. in 1983. During the airport welcoming ceremony; the pope wagged his finger at one of the priests who defied church orders to leave his post in the Sandinista government.

Later, duringa Mass with young people, the pope got into a shouting match with Sandinista youths chanting political slogans.

Nicaraguans' preparations for the 1996 'visit seem to be aimed at "making amends" for the embarrassing incidents, said Paul Townsend, the country representative for Catholic Relief Services in Nicaragua.

Pope calls for better clergy distribution VATICAN CITY (CNS)- Assessing a Vatican project to better distribute the world's clergy, Pope John Paulll expressed disappointment at the low response by dioceses in making prie:;ts available for service around the globe.

He said the church's missionary spirit demands a generm:ity on the part of all local churches, which must look beyond their own borders. ,He made the remarks recently to members of the Interdicasterial Co~mission for the Equitable Distribution (If Priests.

Despite increasing demand for clergy in many countries, "few dioceses have contacted the Vatican commission to offer a willingness to help," the pope said.

He noted that some local churches already make their clergy available for service in other areas.

But he said the percentage: of clergy on loan to priest-poor regions is currently less than I perc,~nt of the total.

"It seems legitimate t,) believe we can do more, and we can do better," he said.

He said he wanted to Hppeal to bishops, priest and religious, as well as to each local church community, to cultivate a gre.ater missionary awareness, particularly in the years leading to the ne>:t millennium.

There are deep challenges facing the church, he told the commission members. The greHtest, he said, is the number of people throughout the world who havl~ yet to learn about Christianity.

But the pope said he was also concerned about traditionally "CI:lIjistian p~rtspf .the globe: in Latin America', where church growth has not kept pace with demographic growth and where it has been checked in pan; by the influence of religious sects; in Eastern Europe, where spiritual values were demolished under de,:ades of communism; and in thl: West, where secularization has led people to forget God and seek exclusively material well-being.

The church's response to all this will rely in part on effectively coordinating the role of it:; ministers, he said.

The' pope set up the Vatican commission in 1991 to help equalize clergy distribution. It sought to respond to the widely varying levels of pastoral workload facing priests around the globe.

For example, in North America there are approximately 1,100 Catholics per priest, in Latin America about 8,000 Catholics pel' priest and in Africa about 4,400 Catholics per priest.

"Some of the youth have joined with those of other (Protestant) churches and prcduced many high-quality audio cassettes." said Father Pius Perumaml, parish priest of St. Xavier agency based in Thailand. Catholic press provides "faith-lift" WASHINGTON (CNS) - People can depend on the Catholic press for "a faith-lift," said the head of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications of the Vatican.

In a message issued for the 1996 observance of Catholic Press Month during February, Archbishop John P. Foley said readers of the Catholic press unfailingly find inspiration in it. He urged Catholics to read and pass on their Catholic newspapers, magazines and books.

"Other people need inspiration too," he said, referring to this year's theme: "Sometimes all you need is a little inspiration."

Providing inspiration is "one of the purposes of the Catholic press," the archbishop said. The Catholic press doesn't bring its readers problems, but instead proposes solutions, he added.

According to Archbishop Foley, the Catholic press offers "the inspiring teaching ofthe Holy Father, the guidance of the bishops' conference and of the local bishop, stories about Catholics who are making a differenct: in society, ideas for stimulating and wholesome entertainment, and - finally - reflections on th«: Sunday liturgy, on sacred Scripture and on the teaching of Christ's church."

He said "formation in the faith" does not end with formal schooling or the latest Sunday homily.

"Formation in the faith is or should be an ongoing experience," he said, "and the Catholic press makes such continuing formation possible and even easy."

Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Costello of Syracuse, N.Y., said that behind the inspiration found in the Catholic press "is a ton of perspiration."

In a message to members of the Catholic press, Bishop Costello, who chairs the {J .S. bishops' Committee on Communications, applauded their viriue. "Let me turn the tables and offer you a. 'little inspiration,' liberally plagiarized from some of the pontiffs of this rapidly vanishing century," he said.

He recalled that Pius X, when still the patriarch of Venice, Italy, pawned his watch and other personal possessions to help the local Catholic paper weather a financial storm.

Later, as pope, he stated, "in vain will you build churches, preach missions, found schools if you cannot at the same time wield the

weapon of a press that is catholic, loyal and sincere."

Speaking to an international gathering of Catholic journalists in Paris more than 40 years ago,

the future Pope Paul VI recognized the importance for the Catholic press being "an instrument of quality, technically sound" to fulfill the "high mission that falls to it."

"The professional demands made of all those associated with this mission are ever more rigorous and pressing," the pope told the journalists. "The most ardent zeal cannot supplant indispensable know-how."

Bishop Costello said Pope John Paul II has reaffirmed "this need for professional competence." In a January 1984 address he told more than I,000 journalists gathered at Vatican City that their mission demanded a "whole range of special knowledge" as well as moral responsibility.

"With the powerful instruments at its disposal journalism can actually forge consciences, ... infuse a sense of God, educate to virtue, cultivate hope, revive sensitivity to transcendental values," the pope stated.

Canadian member newspapers, magazines and general publishers to observe Catholic Press Month by introducing their staffs to their readers and explaining their publications in special stories.

Ideas for promoting increased awareness included: inviting high school and college journalism students to accompany ad salespeople and reporters for a day, and then running a feature on it; recapping major accomplishments and improvements over the past year; and having staff appear on local radio and TV talk shows.

During February, the CPA also suggested that members recognize their longest continual advertisers, hold an open house for the local community, and have department heads take their staff to lunch.

EWTN's internet apostolate Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) announced a major commitment to the development of Catholic online services, including Internet services. Mother Angelica. EWTN's Foundress and Chairman of the Board. commented, "the explosive growth of computerbased telecommunications is an exciting opportunity to spread the Gospel to all nations and reach people in new ways."

EWTN will immediately begin to provide Church documents, news, ed ucational services, discussion groups and Catholic answers' over the Internet and through directdial connections.

EWTN will expand its World Wide Web service to include those resources which are currently available only by tel net and direct-dial.

It will also use its telecommunications arm to supplement TV and radio programming by providing news and information, extended study opportunities, and interactive contact with Catholic experts.

EWTN also plans to deliver audio and video material overthe Internet in the ncar future.

The addition of Internet sen'ices will serve as a complement to EWTN's existing television and radio apostolates. EWTN is America's largest religious cable network reaching over 40-million homes and is now available in Europe. Africa. Central and South America.

We would not go days or weeks without talking to any other dear friencL In fact, we find it a joy to share the goingson in our lives with friends.

With so much happening in school and other activities, we just have to develop a habit of spending personal time with God. One terrific aspect of being friends with God is how God is always available. While our other friends or family members might be out of town or busy with other endeavors, this is not true of God. God's attention is always accessible.

Consequently, developing the habit of sharing your heart with God makes sure that you actually do talk with God. Your approach should depend on what time of day works best for you.

This could happen as you ride to school, taking some quiet time with God as you prepare yourself for what will be asked of you in this day. Or you might prefer the end of the day as you look back on a variety of experiences and happeriings.

My own choice is slightly after awakening in the morning, before my mind gets distracted by other demands.

Whether Gael will be "one of us" when it comes to your own life depends on your response to God's interest in you. God is there, inviting you into a personal relationship with love that truly is divine.

DA parti(:ipates in special exhibit Dominican Academy, Fall River, will be participating in a special exhibit of Catholic Schools from around the Commonwealth scheduled to be held at thc~ Massachusetts State House the week of February 12.

The exhibit, which is coordinated by the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, will highlight the theme "Catholic Schools, Schools You Can Believe I n," the slogan for this year's Catholic Schools Week celebration.

Massachusetts is the orily state in the union which celebrates Catholic Schools Week with an exhibit in its Statehouse.

According to Sister John Marie of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, this is the first time that a Catholic school from Southeastern Massachusetts has participated in the event.

Dominican Academy will be displaying work demonstrating the efforts of its students as well as highlighting accompEshments from its 100 year history. The school, located at 37 Park Street, Fall River, is the only all-girl Catholic

grammar school in ,Southeastern Massachusetts, attracting students from Fall River, DartplOuth, Westport, Somerset, Swan$ea, Seekonk, Dighton, Berkley, Taunton, and Tiverton.

In addition, students from the school have participated in a letter writing campaign sponsored by ·the Parents Alliance for Catholic Education (PACE) in which they have drafted letters to State Senator Thomas Norton regarding the importance of Catholic School education in Massachusetts.
