SS.Cc. of Fairhaven who died Jan. 15 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Boston. he was the son of the late Harold A. and Margaret A. (O'Connor) Whelan. He was professed to the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts Sept. 14, 1943. and was ordained a priest exactly three years later. During his ministry. he served in the westcoast province and also as provincial from 1970 to 1973.

Among his priestly assignment.

Father Whelan taught at the congregation's Scholasticates in Wareham. Jaffrey. and at Bishop Amat High School in La Puente., Calif.

He also served as assistant pastor at Holy Redeemer parish, Chatham. St. Anthony's parish. Mattapoisett. and St. Mary's ::>arish.

Fairhaven. He had been a r<:sident of the Damien Residence retirement home since October, 1989.

Father Whelan is survived by his sister Mrs. Paul Brady <;of Norwood and several nieces and nephews.

Find a Renewed Sense of Independence

Parish celebrates 12 days of Christmas Father William G. Campbell, pastor of St. Rita's Church, Marion, and the parish Spiritual Life Committee delivered an Advent message last month, asking parishioners to focus on prayer and preparation before Christmas and to celebrate after.

In response to that. request, the Christmas celebrations began at St. Rita's on December 25 with the glorious music of the choir and bell ringers in the beautifully decorated church, and continued in the parish through Jan. 6.

During that span, each night Father Campbell or one of "10 parish families presented a personally planned service of carols, prayers and meditations in the church, followed by a party at the hosts' home.

Each night was unique and all were enthusiastically received. Polly Fields, one of the hosts, said, "This is a wonderful way of building community. I've met people I hadn't known. We shared not only our homes but our hearts and prayers."

"It certainly did help build community," said Father Campbell. "We numbered as little as 12 people at first and it grew to over 100 each night. It was exciting to see people respond."

Part of the celebrations included a display of an extensive collection of nativity sets from around the

world, belonging to Eileen and James Canty.

"The parishioners are very proud this experience turned out so well," added Father Campbell. "So many

people not only showed up, but also got to know each other. People who have seen each other go to church for years, but have never spoken."

The Word Made Flesh The fact that the assisted suicide issue has reached the United States Supreme Court should serve sufficient notice that we are in for a long-haul confrontation. When life and death issues surface, emotions so often fog the issues that opposing ideologies sometimes become violent. The legal arguments before the Supreme Court will not be settled for some time; however, the topic is one that affects every human being, female and male, young and old. Because of the explosive nature of the issue and the relentless involvement of the Hem-' lock Society, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Dr. Kevorkian influence, assisted suicide has been given a popularity it does not deserve.

Months ago, the Court agreed to hear the case after two federal jurisdictions ruled in favor of removing criminal prohibitions against assisted suicide. The heart of the issue forming the juristic plea rests in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. The amendment prohibits states from depriving "any person of life, liberty, or prosperity without. due process."

Assisted suicide supporters use this reasoning to make euthanasia a legal option. They argue that there is no moral or legal distinction between life support systems and actively inducing death. In many ways this is the heart ofthe case.

It is. imperative that those who view life from a natural, moral and ethical viewpoint and those with a religious philosophy of life be aware that the culture of death will have no boundries if assisted suicide becomes the law of the land.

Everyone could become a victim at the discretion of the law or those who have been authorized by the law to assist in suicide.

Given the realities of American law, assisted suicide would become a mere choice of policy with no reference to one's personal choice. Ultimately, the state could make the choice of life or death for everyone of its citizens.

Catholic Church teachings on the issue are very clear. Everyone is responsible for his or her life. It is a gift from God, whose image we mirror and in whom we have our being, making us stewa,rds, not masters, of creation. Life is not a disposable issue, to be treated as if it were a mere paper cup the state can throwaway on a' whim.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "It is important to note especially in assisted suicide situations that the error of judgement into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act which must always be forbidden and excluded." Also, given the nature of our current social order, the legalization of assisted suicides will lead to the next step namely the extermination of people against their own free will. Managed care can lead to managed suicide. We are only a hair away from the state proclaiming who can live and who is to die.

As public debate becomes more vocal and strident, it is most important for Church members to hold firm to the ideal that the inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutional element of a civil society and legislature. The' U.S. Supreme Court denied this element with its Roe vs. Wade decision allowing the murder of millions by abortion every year. The assisted suicide mind-set flows from the denial of inalienable rights. We must not allow further deprivation of these human rights which has already eroded the very foundation of a nation based on law.

All human life is sacred because from its very beginning it involves the cre'ative action of God, the Word made flesh.

To question age-old truths Dear Editor, It is with some tribulation and consternation that I finished Father Dietzen's column of Dec, 13, 1996 - "The Church and evolution." History does repeat itself. Galileo's injustices marked the birth pangs of natural truth coming to light. In our time, it is biblical teachings that are on trial.

The times are ominous, just when evolution scientists are in the process of abandoning the Darwinian hypothesis (for lack of "transitional forms," a.k.a. "missing links"), for yet another much harder to prove theory, "punctuated equilibrium" (which conflicts the well founded science of genetics), Pope John Paul II embraces what some renowned biologists have called a modern myth.

According to an article in TIME, Feb, 24, 1992, the American President and the head of the Roman Catholic Church met in June, 1982 and agreed to undertake a clandestine campaign to hasten the end of the communist empire, TI M E reports these leaders discussed what they had in common, the fact that they both survived assassination attempts in 1981 that occurred only six weeks apart. They both believed God had saved them for a special mission. This mission was to hasten the end of communism.

Now the same head of the Roman Catholic Church invites the last prominent Communist leader in the world to visit his house and suggest he visit the same leader's country, Cuba, the last remaining prominent communistic country in the world. It appears obvious to me the reasons why John Paul does these things.

Maybe I don't read the right columnist, or read the correct pages but I can't recall reading any of this in the [secular) newspaper.

The reason this letter is written is to give my religion some good public relations and maybe make members of my own religion proud of their church and its leaders especially if they never heard of the clandestine meeting and agreement in 1982 between President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II. I'm no public relations person but I feel this story exemplifies the Catholic Church's role in the world working for humanity and peace.

Dear brothers and sisters, "God has reconciled the world to himself through Christ and has entrusted to us th-e message of reconciliation" (c.f. 2 Cor 5:18).

During this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity all Christ's followers are invited to ponder these words of St. Paul, to implore the grace of reconciliation and to hear common witness to the Gospel.

The path to Christian unity is marked not only by theological dialogue and institutional contacts, but also by spiritual ecumenism, consisting in prayer and the conversion of hearts. Many leaders of churches and ecclesial communities visited me this past year, including the archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. George Leonard Carey. Among the promising ecumenical events of the year was my meeting with His Holiness Karekin I, catholicos of all the Armenians, and the signing of the common declaration in which we professed the one faith in Jesus Christ, true

God and true man. In this first year of immediate preparation for the great jubilee, let us all turn our

eyes to Jesus Christ our savior and pray fervently for the unity of all his followers .

PARIS (CNS) - The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has announced that its founder, Antoine Frederic Ozanam, will be beatified

by Pope John Paul II this August in Paris.

The ceremony is to coincide with a planned papal visit to Paris for World Youth Day 1997, the society said. It listed Aug. 21-24 as the dates of the papal trip. It said Ozanam's beatification will be the first such ceremony held in Paris.

Last June the Vatican approved a miracle attributed to Ozanam's intercession, paving the way for his beatification.

A 19th-century French scholar, Ozanam founded the Conference of Charity with fellow university students in Paris in 1833 to provide practical assistance to the poor. Two years later it was renamed the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. .

The society today has about 850,000 members in 130 countries, including 64,000 members in the United States. In the U.S. where it is represented in every diocese in the country, it reported that it provided more than $\00 million in aid to those in need last year.

Ozanam, who had three doctorates and taught law, literature and history, was a significant force in Catholic intellectual life in mid 19th-century France as well as a widely admired model oCthe Catholic lay apostolate.

In a letter shortly before Christmas the society's International General Council informed member councils around the world that 60 percent of those who responded to an international consultation on the beatification site asked that it be held in' Paris.

The letter, signed by beatification cause official Amin A. de Tarrazi, said it was the pope's wish to have the beatification take place in conjunction with his visit for World Youth Day.

Young Kenyan nurse defied tradition to reach dream

By Joseph Ngala LENKISEM, Kenya (CNS) -.: Nurse Charity Maipenyo Olonyokies takes the blood pressure of a young pregnant woman at Fatima Health Center, in a remote area of the Ngong Diocese.

Another young mother walks in, and as Olonyokies starts routine checks, the patient and newcomer start laughing heartily. The young mothers were married off according to Masai tradition probably to polygamous husbands - and had little or no opportunity to go to school.

Olonyokies handles them patiently and sympathetically as she laughs and listens to them. But little do they know that underlying her pleasant and soft look lies a pillar of strength and determination.

Eleven years ago, Olonyokies, then 13, defied and outwitted her father by doing what no other Masai girl her age would have dared: She wrote a secret letter to the government representative in her area asking 'him to rescue her from an impending marriage that she was against.

Her courage and boldness bore fruit and her act was highlighted in the local press as she returned to school. ' She has since finished school and trained as a nurse at St. Joseph's training school in Kilgoris, run by the Diocese of Ngong.

Olonyokies was in the seventh grade and had gone home for the August holidays.

It was circumcision time. According to tradition, a girl must be circumcised before she marries, but little did Olonyokies know that her father had already designed a marriage for her after the ceremony.

But the eight days of healing were over, she overheard her mother complaining to a friend about her father's intention to marry her off.

But that made no sense to her, since she knew she wanted to go on with her studies. Her mother later told her about it, but neither her resistence nor her mother's persuasion could change her father's mind.

For him, the traditional thing to do after a circumcision was to marry off his daughter, and he went on to conduct the ceremonies. He also made sure that she did not return to school for the , third term.

So Olonyokies wrote a letter to the local government chiefto come to her rescue. But he did not, and agreed with her father. She then decided to write to the Government District Commissioner with the help of her mother, Mary Olonyokies.

Meanwhile, the father bundled her into a car and drove her to the prospective husband's home in Namanga. She had no idea who her prospective husband was, but it turned out to be a young man whose father had withdrawn him from school. In exchange, her father had asked for I ~ head of cattle.

As tradition demands, OIonyokies had to stay with her motherin-law before the marriage, a process that was lengthened because she had not healed from the cir-

cumclslon operation. That gave the government time to intercede.

Now, when she could be working in modern hospitals elsewhere, OIonyokies has chosen to work in a remote. dry and inaccessible area where she is called upon to visit her parents at all hours.

Fatima Health Center is perched on a low ridge in the middle of nowhere. It takes four hours of rough road from Kajiado town in the heart of Masai .land to get there. No regular transportation is available except when the Italian Comboni missionary or the hospital administrators go to visit.

"We have been to visit the areas surrounding the hospital for clinics' and immunization," said Olonyokies. "It is dry, dusty and difficult, but they need medical attention."

Olonyokies goes beyond her prescribed duties; she spends time talking to mothers, many of them illiterate.

Hygiene, she says, is a big problem, particularly because most people live next to cattle or other animals.

Italian Dr. Franscisca Lipeti said she is impressed by Olonyokies' efforts and describes her as a very committed and helpful worker.

"She is young and qualified and could have gone to work anywhere else, but she ,chose to stay in this difficult place because she has a strong conviction to improve the community'S health," said Lipeti.

The mothers, Lipeti said, call 010nyokies the "boss." " Olonyokies attributes her success to her mother, who supported her, and an aunt, who saw her through high school.

"While you need some luck under the circumstances I grew up in, you also have ,to be extremely determined and persistent," she said. The Masai traditions may be detrimental to young women, so girls have to fight back, Olonyokies said.

"Tradition forbids a young person from talking to their father or challenging them. But Masai girls' need not give up too early; they should persistently fight," she said.

S)Je added that she urges girls to take education seriously.

Her fights also helped her onceprospective husband to go to school. When the district commissioner intervened, he also ordered the boy's father to take him to school, since the father had withdrawn him from school to get married.

Now he is a trained teacher and a political representative in his area.

Is she planning to get married?

"Not yet," she said with a laugh.

Olonyokies said she has a big responsibility: taking care of her siblings, since she now lives with her mother and father.

And what is her relationship with her father?

"Well, he respects me very much, especially because I am the breadwinner," said Olonyokies.

By Stephen Steele NEW YORK'(CNS) - When 12-year-old Larry Ayala and his family had to stay at a New York City-run emergency facility in the Bronx, "we kept tissue papers in our ears to keep the roaches out."

And, he recalled, "I had to chase mice off of my sisters' blankets."

But during the Christmas holiday, the eight-member Ayala family found refuge at a temporary shelter set up by a group of clergy and local residents.

The group, the Sanctuary Coalition of Clergy and Citizens, opened the shelter Dec. 26 for families repeatedly turned away by the city-run Emergency Assistance Unit. The shelter, located in the elementary school gymansium at a Presbyterian church, had to close Jan. 6 when school reopened after the holidays.

The 40 people who had found shelter there were then forced back into the Emergency Assistance Unit in the hope that the city would deem them eligible for emergency housing.

Father John P. Duffell, pastor of Ascension parish and coordinator of the shelter, said he hoped the group's housing effort would bring the ongoing plight of New York's homeless families into the public debate.

"It seems that these families have been lumped together into one group," he told Catholic New York, archdiocesan newspaper.

"They're homeless. They're no longer seen as human beings.

When friends 'meet: again I had one of the happiest possible experiences when I met two of my teachers after a separation of nearly 50 years. Both are Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the wonderful community of nuns who taught me from elemt:ntary school through college in my home town of Albany, NY. Sister Jerome Joseph, my high school music teacher, gave me a love for classical music that brought joy to my life, a gift I passed on to my children.

Sister Emily Joseph my college Latin teacher, had a charism that made this "dead" subject come alive.

Both of these nuns had a special talent that I long ago knew came from 'their souls. They were two very alive women who never rationed their smiles. J list being in their classes made me feel like smiling too.

They invited me to dinner at the villa for retired nuns. We were like three school girls, so excited at seeing each other again after nearly a half century.

The stories kept coming back, and I was astounded at how much they could remember. I was only one of thousands of students they had taught in their careers, yet they remembered me. " In the past few years I have had the wonderful surprise of seeing many people from my past who were dear friends. The years had separated us, but when we got back together, even after many decades, it was as if layers simply fell away, and there we were, young and excited again.

Perhaps this means that when someone becomes a true friend in our youth, the bond always remains fresh. t have asked people how they feel. about seeing someone they had known well after a separation of 20 or more years.

The answers vary, usually starting with, "It depends on whether I really liked that person."

One woman said that meeting old friends after long separations excites her. She feels "new" again

because seeing them reminds her of those fresh years when life was spread out like a smorgasbord, with so many wonderful choices and experiences ahead. In those fresh years, she hadn't considered the "do'wn times, the dark times." She appreciated the joy of remembering those pre-wounded days.

One man told me that seeing old friends is a reminder that we are anchored, not alone and drift-

When we are young it is so much easier to connect to friends. Perhaps that is because life is simpler then,"and we trust others more.

My wonderful evening with the two sisters who had deeply and permanently impressed me in my t~en years was a lesson in itself.

It taught me how important each of us is when we encounter another. The impact we leave can range from love to destruction. Every impression we make on another is precisely that - an impression formed for life.

I was fortunate, after so many years, to be able to tell these two beautiful women that the impression they made on me was the best. They gave us love and an excitement for learning. It was not surprising that the memory of this gift made for a great reunion!

How to become a Catholic Q. I am a lifelong Protestant, with a good bit of background in Sunday school and other Christian education.

After much thought and prayer, I am interested in becoming Catholic. Where do I start? (New York) A. It's not hard. The first step is to contact a parish or Catholic center near you which regularly conducts programs for people like yourself. Many are located near you in Manhattan. If you get stuck, look in the Yellow Pages under "Churches, Roman Catholic."

In my view, the best, most readable and scholarly one-volume history covering the church from its beginning all the way to our own generation is "Pilgrim Church," authored by Father William Bausch, published by Twenty-Third Publications, Mystic., Conn. It is available through bookstores.

People in other parts of the country will not, of course, have the same large numbers of Catholic churches immediately available. But they may approach a priest or other parish minister at any nearby parish for the same assistance.

Q. My 22-year-old grandson and his steady girlfriend are expecting a baby in three months. They are both Catholic, and have received all the necessary sacraments up to now.

They live in a neighboring state. The priest they went to for marriage quoted to them that a couple who have a child out of wedlock cannot get married in the church.

I'm sorry about the circumstances, but am happy about my new great-grandchild. So is the baby's father, who has a fine new job to support his famil}'.

Can you give me some information about this

Pope urges scientists to consider ethics of work

By John Travis VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Pope John Paul" urged scientists to always consider the moral and ethical implications of their work in order to serve the true cause of humanity.

The pope made the remarks Jan. 11 to about 100 scientific experts attending a Vatican-sponsored International Conference on Space Research.

"I address an appeal to all your colleagues in the various fields of scientific investigation: Make every effort to respect the primacy of ethics in your work; always be concerned with the moral implications of your methods and your discoveries," the pope said.

He said scientists should never forget that humanity is served "only if knowledge is joined to conscience."

The pontiff said he believed recent advances in outer space research had deepened the appreciation people have for the human being and the Creator.

"As never before man's gaze is open to the wonders of the universe.

And the marvel of it all is a constant call to ponder ever more seriously that greatness of man's own destiny and his dependence upon the Creator," he said.

The scientists were investigating a model which traces the evolution of the universe, from an instant after the starting-point of time to

the present and beyond. The pope said the exciting new information revealed by such instruments as the spacecraft telescope "Galileo" were increasing our awe of the cosmos.

He said the participation of the Vatican Observatory in the scientists' work was a concrete sign of the church's appreciation for the "genius, objectivity, self-discipline and respect for truth" which scientists bring to the exploration of the universe.

He said he was convinced that the more scientists research the" laws of the universe, "the more insistent becomes the question of meaning and purpose." This inevitably leads to contemplative reflection and a greater appreciation for a sense of"man's transcendence over the world, and our God over man," he said.

simply have misunderstood the priest. If so, it's unfortunate they didn't get the matter straightened out at the time.

Or the priest may have perceived some serious problems in their relationship, and unfortunately chose simply to tell them they couldn't (in his view of the situation) get married.

Unwise and confusing as this may be, it seems that some priests, out of desperation and without explanation or advice about further steps, use this route to discourage couples from marrying.

If he has not done so already, please suggest to your grandson that they approach another priest to assist their preparation for marriage.

Parish council meetings tend to generate the excitement of'grass:growing races.

The exception to this, of course, is when a new pastor arrives and suggests the 100-year-old marble baptismal font be moved onto the grounds and employed as a bird bath.

While this draws TV'news helicopters and riot police, it is hard to duplicate week in and week out.

Thus, the average parish is hard pressed at times to attract broad and lively participation. To that end, it seems planners must take up the task of enlivening these yawn festivals. I humbly offer a handful of potential thought stimulators: . .Hold a Jeopardy night. Require members to phrase all statements as a response to a question beginning with the word "what." ("What is 'jarring one's teeth on the parking lot speed bumps.''')

Hand out Mickey Mouse ears before the meetings.

When the chairperson says, "I move the minutes of the last meeting be approved as read," say, "Why red? Why not blue? I move they be approved as blue."

Pour the council president's coffee in a dribble cup and serve it with a rubber chocolate-chip cookie.

Require attendees to tell a knock-knock joke before they can make any motions for action.

Arrive early and install a strobe light.

Wear a Zorro mask and tell everyone you just came ftom face-to-face confession.

Issue squirt guns to people who are on time, and allow them to fire at will at everyone who arrives late.

Snap on a two-minute timer when the pastor starts to make a comment. , Invite the pre-school religious education class.

Solicit its students' suggestions on future planning.

Better yet, meet in their classroom and sit a~: their desks.

Make a motion that the first person to use anyone of the words "budget," "finances," "funds," "money" or "stewardship" be fined to the tune of a week's worth of monitoring the crying room.

Dear Dr. Kenny: After five years of marriage and two children, my wife says she doesn't love me any more and wants a divorce. 1 am surprised and crushed. She gives no other reason except to add that she believes that she never really loved me from the beginning.

1 suggest we get counseling, and she says nO.,1 ask her to think of the children, and she says it would be bad for them if she were to live a lie.

Should 1 be agreeable, tough, resign myself, let her know how depressed 1 am? All I know is that 1 feel like crying, my whole life seems over. (Ohio) We live in affluent culture that has fostered selfcentered ness, where an individual's needs are honored and protected even against the welfare of others. I sympathize with you. I thought a promise was a promise, especially when the needs of children were involved.

Marriage may be enlivened and fueled by love, but it cannot depend on love for its existence. Love has as many ups and downs as a roller coaster. Love m~y come and go, and come again. Promises are or should be, forever. .

So much for ideals.

Indiana has no-fault divorce. That means either .party may ,request and get a divorce with no other reason than "I, want one."Ohio may well be the same, but even if a state only.allows divorce .for .certain reasons, those reasons can always be alleged, and the court rarely disputes them.

If your wife wants a divorce, you can, as you say, try different strategies to get her to reconsider. But to end a marriage today, it only takes cine party to say . no.

I would see a lawyer. This does not mean that you "accept" that a divorce will actually happen. It does mean, however, that you take your wife at her word and start where she is.

Sometimes you have to go in one direction before you can go in the other. You.may have to actualize the details of a divorce before your wife will consider salvaging the marriage.

Be assertive withoul being mean or aggressive.

Take a firm position on the financial arrangements and the custody I visitation plan. Make your own written detailed, proposal.

Be specific about each small item. For example, give pickup and drop-off times for the children. If you are not requesting custody, offer weekly child support in accord with your ability to pay and the county guidelines.

Your proposal may generate a counterproposal from your wife. This may lead to mediation.

Judges do not usually order marriage counseling if one party says the breakup is irreconcilable. However, even if your wife is unwilling, most judges are quite willing to order mediation of the child care and financial issues in a divorce.

"No disrespect, but I find it usually works better when the players are big and fast," said Parcells at a Jan. 10 press conference when asked if divine intervention has any bearing on a big win.

"Having God is an equitable situation for both teams," he added.

New England beat the Jacksonville (Fla.) Jaguars 20-6 in the AFC title game Jan. 12 in. Foxboro, Mass.

Parcells also praised the team's defensive rotations and the maturing offensive line, especially the receivers, for keeping the team in the playoffs. "Some of our kids are just better than they were earlier in the season," he said.

The Patriots will square off against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXI in New Orleans Jan. 26. In their first Super Bowl appearance II years ago, the Patriots were crushed by the Chicago Bears 46-10.

The Jaguars and the Patriots spent the days prior to the Jan. 12 playoff game in Providence, which was designated "host city" by the NFL. Joining Parcells at the press conference were Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe, tackle Bruce Armstrong and linebacker Mike Jones.

Armstrong said that while the Jaguars were the underdogs for the AFC playoff, the Packers are heavily favored for the big game.

"The big story is going to Green Bay, 'the Pack is back ... .' For us to be the big story we have to be the only team left," he said.

Bledsoe also acknowledged the ultimate challenge will be in New Orleans.

"This may be the best opportunity I have for a championship, so I have to make the most of it," he said.

Green Bay bishop ignores his New England roots GREEN BAY, Wis. (CNS) Even though he's a native of Boston, Green Bay Bishop Robert J. Banks says his choice to win Super Bowl XX.XI is no contest.

"To put my sentiments as simply as possible - Go, Pack, Go'" the bishop wrote in a column for The Compass, Green Bay diocesan newspaper.

The 1997 Super Bowl Jan. 26 pits the Green Bay Packers against the New England Patriots.

Responding to those who have asked which team he will root for, Bishop Bl!nks used a familiar line from the Gospel: "Have I been with you all this time and still you do not know me?"

"As soon as I opened my letter appointing me to Green Bay, I became a Packer-backer," he wrote.

"It was easy because I had been a Packer fan years before as a youngster." .

Bishop Banks, who has headed the Green Bay Diocese since October 1990, said he has bet Cardinal

Pope makes women eligible for honors historically bestowed on men

VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Pope John Paul II has made women eligible for Vatican honors historically bestowed only on men.

On several occasions women had already received the awards, known as equestrian honors, which are honorary knighthoods granted by popes to recognize service to the church and to society.

But Pope John Paul first described the process in detail in a June 1996 document that the church should honor female highachievers "because these women in equal dignity and capacity are as able as men."

The pope provided for "Domina," meaning dame or lady in Latin, to be tacked on to the start of three of the five equestrian order titles. They are, in descending rank, the Order of Pius, the Order of si. Gregory the Great and the Order of St. Sylvester the Pope.

Each can be awarded with an insignia, a cross, a medal or a commendation.

There was no provision in the statement for a women's version of the highest equestrian honor, the Supreme Order of Christ, usually reserved for heads of state, or the second-highest honor, the Order of the Golden Spur.

The pope noted that, as with men receiving the awards, female honorees are not required to observe a ceremonial dress code.

Pope John Paul has given several women equestrian honors for a variety of achievements.

For example, in 1991 he knighted five Swedish women who were members of the King of Sweden's entourage during a visit to the Vatican. The announcement was made almost a year later in "Acta Apostolicae Sed is."

In 1995 Marjorie Weeke, an American official at the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, received the Order of St. Gregory the Great.

Weeke told Catholic News Service in January the pope's announcement that equestrian honors are not just for men will be good for the church as well as for women working in it.

"They do like to recognized everyone does," she said. "Many women work anonymously for the church for years and years. So anything coming from the pope means a great deal to them.

"Maybe it will encourage bishops to consider nominating women in their dioceses for recognition, when they might not have thought of it before," she added. "Anyway, it won't hurt."

Couple gives simple reasons for success of 70-year-old

By Gary Morton SECRETARY, Md. (CNS) Frances and Andrew Moxey of Secretary don't get involved in complicated explanations when asked what has been the formula for their successful marriage of 70 years.

"Just love each other. Love does a lot of things," said 88-year-old Frances Moxey. , "I think love and being loved are about two of the best things I know," said 91-year-old Andrew Moxey.

Then, after a moment's pause, Frances Moxey added one more word. "Prayer," she said, With about 25 relatives on hand, the Moxeys renewed their wedding vows during a Mass cele-_ brated at their home by Father William P. Mathesius, pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel parish.

Father Mathesius thought it appropriate that the Mass was on

Dec. 28, feast of the Holy Family.

He said he had never met anyone married for 70 years. "Y ou are the longest-married couple in our parish, and possibly all of Maryland," he told them.

Asthey talked about their marriage, the Moxeys sat in chairs in front of a wall where a crucifx was hanging. Close to it was a blessing they received from Pope Paul VI for their 50th wedding anniversary.

The blessing was m'entioned during the Mass by Father-Mathesius, who remarked that almost another generation has passed since that time. "Surely God has blessed you with a good family and a long life," he told them.

The two knew each other while growing up in Dorchester County, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. But Frances recalled that it took childhood game to start their romance.

OnJan. I, 1927, Frances Wanex and Andrew Moxey, ~ere married at the old church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, where they are parishioners to'this day. Frances doesn't remember much about the wedding day except that "we had a crowd at, the house, all wellwishers."

In renewing their wedding vows at their 70th anniversary Mass, Andrew Moxey once again 'placed a ring on his wife's finger - the same one he placed there in 1927.

Neither Andrew nor Frances seem to think there has been anything unusual about their lives together. "Wejust worked together and loved each other and cared for each other," Frances said.

She recalled that one of the more intense times in their lives came when their house burned down and then Andrew had to build the new home where they live today. "He's been a hardworking man," Frances said.

Sunday homilies'sh'ould faithful, pope tells French bishops

By Lynne Wei! VATICAN CITY (CNS) - The church cannot afford to miss a valuable chance to reach the faithful, so priests should try harder to make their Sunday homilies appealing, Pope John Paul II told a group of French bishops last week.

The bishops from dioceses in the northern region of France were on their "ad limina" visits to the Vatican. Bishops from around the world make the trip every five years to report on conditions in their dioceses.

"Sunday homilies are to be prepared with much care, through prayer and through study," the pope told the French bishops.

"They help the faithful to live their faith in their daily existence and to enter into dialogue with their brothers."

Priests play an essential role in presenting religion to the world, said the pontiff, adding, "how can our contemporaries, <:onfronted with cultures and sciences which pose important questions to the faith, follow Christ if they are not familiar with dogma and do not have strong spiritual structuresf' Meeting with bishops from France's central region during the previous week, the pope sounded a similar note: French people will continue to remain at a distance from the Catholic Church, he said, if it does not find more accessible ways to reach them under the current social circumstances, which include high unemployment and economic crisis.

In his talk with the bishops of northern France, POpt: John Paul expanded on the theme of the priest's unique place in society, and the unique pressures that are placed upon him.

"In the presence of God, the priest finds the strength to live with the essential requirements of his ministry," the pope said, adding

that the priest does this despite "his weakness and his fragility."

The requirement of celibacy recalls the profound sense of human existence, the pope said, considering that contemporary society "upholds certain erroneous conceptions of sexuality."

"Perfect chastity leads the priest to live a universal love and to make himself attentive to each of his brethren," Pope John Paul said. "This attitude is the source of an incomparable spiritual fecundity."

Priests in France, as in many other places, face additional strains because their numbers are shrinking while the needs Of dioceses continue to grow, the pope said.

"I know the poor and desperate conditions in which the priests of your country voluntarily accept to live their mission," he added. "I salute their perseverance, and I ask them not to neglect their own health."

Pope John Paul suggested that to ease the situation, more lay workers can be engaged in church functions, and retired, priests and bishops should be urged to assist in whatever way they can.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Bishop Michel Saudreau of Le Havre said one of the bishops' main goals is to promote the vitality of churches in France by involving the faithful in evangelization. He also said the bishops want to help more people discover how religion can work in their lives.

Unemployment, economic insecurity and the regional effects of globalization have profoundly distressed the French people, Bishop Saudreau said.

In response to these problems, he continued, the bishops have tried "to make our contemporaries in our secularized society recognize the spiritual dimension of human existence and the funda-

Archbishop decries Atlanta abortion clinic bombing ATLANTA (CNS) - "We are appalled and saddened at this affront to life," Archbishop John F. Donoghue of Atlanta said Jan. 16 after two explosions rocked an abortion clinic in an Atlanta suburb, injuring several people.

"We deplore and condemn the cowardly and pointless act of violence at the clinic in Sandy Springs, regardless of who bears responsibility," he said.

Cardinal Bernard F. Law of Boston, chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities, said, "Our bishops' conference and all its members have repeatedly, exhaustively and publicly denounced violence as a growing cancer in our society."

"On behalf of all the Catholic bishops in the United States, I strongly denounce today's senseless violence," he added. "Such violence is the opposite of everything we stand for.... We pray for those who were injured."

The first explosion at the clinic, the Atlanta Northside Family Planning Services Center, occurred at 9:30 a.m. It shattered one side of the five-story building, which also houses offices of lawyers, dentists and other professionals on upper

floors. No injuries were reported from that blast.

An hour later, however, when police and fire officials and news crews were gathered at the site, a second explosion destroyed a trash container in a parking lot next to the building. Several people were injured.

"The evil is compounded by the application of a second blast designed to injure officials who selflessly placetheir lives on the line in these kinds of incidents," Archbishop Donoghue said.

He said no such violence can be condoned by those committed to "the sanctity of human life" and urged that all people of good will "dedicate themselves anew to the dignity and sanctity of the gift of life."

The Associated Press reported that about a half-hour after the second explosion, another abortion clinic half a mile away received a bomb threat and was evacuated.

Mary Boyert, executive director of Georgia Right to Life, said, "We are deeply saddened and concerned about the terrorism this morning. None of these - violence, bombing, terrorism - are ever pro-life, and they are never the solution to 'social problems."

Still a priest VATICAN CITY (CNS) - A Sri Lankan theologian's excommunication highlighted a peculiarity of the little-used church penalty for heresy or schism: Excommunication does not automatically result in removal from the priesthood. The Vatican announced Jan. 4 that Oblate Father Tissa Balasuriya incurred automatic excommunication because of his position on original sin, papal infallibility, Mary and on Christ's role in salvation. While the priest may no longer celebrate the sacraments, he remains a priest and a member of the Oblate order unless a separate process to dismiss him from the clerical state is initiated, according to the Code of Canon Law. "There are two different penalties: excommunication and dismissal from the clerical state. It is enough to read the Code of Canon Law to know this," said Archbishop Julian Herranz, president of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts.

Bishop Ii hero PRAGUE, Czech Republic (CNS) - One of the Czech Republic's newest bishops is best known as a communist-era dissident priest. Bishop-designate Vaclav Maly, 46, who was ordained a bishop Jan. 11, played a leading part in the 1989 "Velvet Revolution" that toppled communist rule in the then-Czechoslovakia. Although Bishop Maly, the new Prague auxiliary, did not claim to represent the Catholic Church, of which 40 percent of 10.9 million Czechs claim membership, his prominence alongside other revolution leaders was widely believed to have helped redeem the church's often-submissive public image under communism. Interviewed at the time, then-Father Maly said he believed his priestly duty had been "to assist the movement of society, foster solidarity, and encourage Christians to reflect on their social and political responsibilities."

Strikers backed SEOUL, South Korea (CNS) Hundreds of priests in South Korea have threatened to join a nationwide movement against President Kim Young-Sam if force is used on hundreds of thousands of striking laborers. "We willjoin a popular campaign to oust the government if it resorts to the use of force," said a statement signed by more than 800 of the country's priests. "President Kim should apologize for causing the troubles and immediately retract the law," sa,id the statement issued at Seoul's Myongdong Cathedral Jan, 13.

Among other provisions, the law allows employers to replace striking workers and layoff surplus workers.

Saint Anne's Hospital lists new staff members Saint Anne's Hospital, Fall River, announced the appointment of Paul V. Quinn'as vice-president of Physician Development and Outpatient Services and Linda K. Liekhus as vice-president of Clinical and Support Services.

"The appointments'represent a restructuring ofthe hospital's management as Saint Anne's continues to successfully adapt to the changing healthcare environment," explained Joseph W. Wilczek, the hospital's president and CEO. Quinn will be responsible for all areas of physician relations, the development of new clinical services, and the enhancement of existing programs. Liekhus will be responsible for the management of all clinical and support services.

Prior to joining the staff, Paul Quinn was Chief Operating Officer of Skin Medicine and Surgery Center, a large physician practice in Rhode Island. There, he was responsible for all operational, planning, and professional support services for the 10 clinics operated by the physician group.

He was also previously the vicepresident for Administration and Managed Care at the Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island. In this capacity, he was responsible for Human Resources Management, Physician and Patient Support Services, Managed Care Programs, Healthcare Contracting, Management Information Systems, Materials Management, Facilities Management and Operation.

Quinn is a graduate of Providence College and received his master's degree in Hospital Administration/ Healthcare Planning from George Washington University, Washington, DC. He also completed an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval College in Newport.

Prior to joining Saint Anne's Hospital, Linda K. Liekhus was the Administrator for the Neurology Health Care Service, Fletcher Allen Health Care - a recently merged, not-for-profit organization comprised of a 430-bed tertiary medical center, a 100-bed hospital, and a multi-specialty physician group in Burlington, Vermont. In this position, Liekhus had full operational responsibility

for an integrated neurology health care system comprised of a physician group practice, inpatient hospital service, clinical neurophysiology testing laboratory, research/ clinical trial laboratory, and an outpatient memory disorder clinic.

She led the integration of these operationally, financially, and geographically separate departments into a health care system designed to manage the full continuum of patient care.

Previously, Liekhus was the Chief Operating Officer at Northwestern Medical Center, a 70-bed, not-for-profit community hospital located in St. Albans, Vermont. In this position, Liekhus had full operational responsibility for Diagnostic Imaging, Dietary, Education, Facilities Management, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Quality Assessment and Improvement, Respiratory Therapy, Safety/ Infection Control, Social Service's, and Utilization Review.

Liekhus received her undergraduate degree in Business Administration/ Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She completed a Masters in Health Administration at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Quinn and Liekhus are both members of many professional organizations including the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Medical Group Management Association.

March for Life WASHINGTON (CNS) - The annual March for Life took as its theme "No One Can Serve Two Masters" when thousands of prolifers from across the United States streamed into Washington Jan. 22, the 24th anniversary ofthe Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion virtually on demand.

WARSAW, Poland (CNS) Poland's Senate rejected a change to the country's abortion law that would have allowed termination of pregnancies for social and economic reasons.

After a heated 'debate, senators voted 53-40, with two abst~ntions, to reject the measure, which would have allowed abortion up to 12 weeks for women facing "burdensome living conditions or a difficult personal situation."

However, pro-life cainpaigners warned the measure could still be passed if the vote is overturned by a simple majority in the lower house.

The Oct. 3 vote was marked by a march of up to 15,000 pro-life protesters, as well as an all-night prayer in the Polish capital's nearby Holy Cross Church.

Women are key in gosI~el message, pope says

By Lynne Wei! VATICAN CITY (CNS) Women played an integral role in spreading Jesus' message from the very start of his life, Pope John Paul said at his first general audience of the new year.

Picking up the theme of his catechisis from Dec. 18 - the last general audience of 1996 - the pope elaborated on the meaning of the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple, as told in the Gospel of Luke.

On that occasion. Simeon tells Mary she will be pierced by a sword, which Bible scholars have interpreted to mean she was destined to suffer along with her son at his crucifixion.

The prophetess Anna, who is also present at the temple, gives thanks to God and speaks "about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem," according to the Gospel.

The pope said these passages offer "symbols of women who, by the saintliness of their lives, are ready to welcome.the presence o( Christ and to praise God each day for his wonders."

Anna's pronouncements iri the temple give her a prominent role in the ~evelation ofJesus to the world, the pope said, adding that she represents all those who recognized in his birth the fulfillment ofGod's promises of a coming Messiah. _Regarding Mary's role, the pope said Simeon's prophesy proves her inseparable from the work of her son. The pontiff said it is also clear from other texts that she' was destined to serve "under him and with him."

Pope John Paul said the fact that Simeon "speaks neither with Joseph nor of Joseph" signifies that even then it was apparent that

Of the 435 representatives and 100 senators, 24 senators and 131 representatives are Catholics, the largest single religious denomination in the Congress.

At its start in 1995, the 104th Congress included 2 I Catholic senators and 128 Catholic representatives for a then-record of 149.

This term, nine of the Catholic senators are Republicans and 15 are Democrats. In the House, 50 Catholics are Republicans and 8 I are Democrats.

By Cind)' Wooden VATICAN CITY (CNS) People should "celebrate the day of baptism just as one celebrates a birthday," Pope John Paul II said after baptizing 19 infants.

The pope conferred the "immense gift" of baptism on the babies Jan. 12, the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, during a Mass in the Sistine Chapel.

The children, all of whom were born after Oct. I, included Italian twin girls, a dozen other Italian babies, two Polish infants and newborns from India, Mexico and Spain.

With Michelangelo's fresco of "The Last Judgment" towering over his shoulders, Pope John Paul said, "This baptism frees man from sin and remits his sins, redeems him from slavery to evil and marks his rebirth in the Holy Spirit."

Baptism, he said, "communicates new life, which is participation in the life of God the Father, given to us by his only begotten Son, who was made man, died and rose."

The pope told the parents and

godparents that baptism is "the first and fundamental sacrament of the church, the sacrament of new life in Christ."

2. "When you love a woman, you see your world inside her eyes." Well, only if you are myopically self-centered! In fact, one of the best rewards of a healthy relationship is to learn to see the world in new and expanded ways. One's own perception of life is just that: one view.

Instead of looking to another for ongoing validation of your opinions, take time to listen.

Look at the world through another's eyes. Grow a little bit!

3. Love means a "joy that lasts forever," for "there's a band of gold that shines, waiting." Well, the teen years are not a time to be thinking about wedding bands. Instead, focus on learning about relationships, learning from successes and mistakes. . Be smart enough to avoid exclusive relationships, realizing that you will learn the most about yourself and relationships in general by dating a variety of people.

4. "If I can't believe that someone is true, to fall in love is so hard to do." I do agree with this point. Lasting love is built on tr!Jst. If being hurt in a past relationship erodes your ability to believe that another person can be "true," you probably need to spend some time developing other life interests and goals.

Spend more time with your friends. Then, as your spirit heals from past hurts, your ability to trust a trustworthy person will once more return.

Given all this evaluation, I'm still delighted to hear Journey's sound on the radio. Classic rock still lives!

By Christopher Carstens The first time I encountered friend stealing, I was working with teenage girls in a group home.

Most of those kids had been shoved out of their families. A number had seen the tough side of street life at a young age.

The only time I saw one of those girls break down and sob was when Berlinda told me what Lanni had done to her: "She stole my best friend."

At first I thought it was an odd, almost silly complaint. "How," I asked myself, "can you steal a friend?"

Of course I didn't understand.

I'm a guy.

The women who worked at the group home explained that the lOUd, direction aggression guys use is easier to deal with. "But the girls," they said, "they break each other's hearts, and you can hardly see it happening. It's all underground."

I finally got a handle on this when I read Deborah Tannen's remarkable book, "You Just Don't Understand." It is one of the most useful books I've ever read, and I recommend it highly.

Tannen says guys measure their relationships in terms of power who's the biggest, the smartest, the strongest, who's on top?

Girls measure things a totally different way. Girls want to know who's closer to whom, who knows the latest information, who's on the inside with the crowd and who's on the outs.

If Sara is Sally's best friend, and Julie convinces Sara that Sally is a

no-good, Sally is on the outs. But Sally doesn't just lose Sara, she risks losing all the friends that she and Sara had together because those girls are now forced to choose between the two former friends.

The alignments are often based on popularity. If Julie is one of the popular kids, she may draw Sara and all her friends away from Sally.

But if Sally is more popular than Julie, then Sara risks being cut off if she goes out on a limb with Julie.

Guys may miss what girls see happening right in front of their eyes. I've got a Ph. D. in psychology, but I didn't understand how this works until I read Tannen's book.

Tannen doesn't talk about how things should be, she just explains the way they are.

I think one of the main claims friendship places on us is loyalty.

Loyalty demands sticking by your friends, even if a popular kid holds out the lure of invitation to a better class of parties or the chance to eat lunch with the rest of the popular kids at noon.

You don't need to go along with your friends as they make dreadful mistakes, like using drugs or getting involved with gangs. Sometimes you have to cut the ties.

And you can't stop someone from stealing another person's friend. But as a loyal friend, you can refuse to be stolen yourself.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, NB Students and faculty at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in New Bedford will be celebrating Catholic Schools Month this year with many activities. Students will be thanking their parents in a special way for the opportunity to attend OLMC. There will be opportunities for togetherness at Hot Wheels night on Jan. 30 and at the annual Drama Club production on Jan. 31.

The celebration will continue throughout February with a special "Hall of Fame" that can be

viewed at Open House on February 3, hosted by Rosemary daSilva, principal. A time capsule will be opened along with the other events, including registration for the 1997 school year. The event is open and all are welcome to attend.

Upper grades will be busy preparing for their spelling bee and science fair projects. Catholic Schools Month will conclude with a special "mardi gras" picnic, some spirit days, and the creation of a new time capsule to be opened in the year 2007!

GRADE 3 students from St. Mary's School, New Bedford, present a play entitled "The Friendly Beasts."

Christmas at St. Mary's School, New Bedford, found the children assisting the parish by sorting gifts donated for a "Giving Tree." Gifts were delivered to Hope House, Medi-Plex Hospital and Nursing Home, Plainview Nursing Home, Market Ministries, and Catholic Social Services.

The Christmas Festival began with "Breakfast with Santa." Film and a camera for~pictures with Santa were donated by the Polaroid Corporation. A bake sale, student made crafts, and book fair were some of the highlights of the festival. Earlier in the week, principal Angela Stankiewicz, dressed as Clifford the Big Red Dog, promoted the book fair by visiting all

classes to invite them to attend.

Chairperson of the event was Susan Darling, school parent and secretary.

As a gift to the parish, the children of the school presented a program of songs, poems, and plays on Dec. 19. Students from the Music on the Move program also performed. The program closed with a retelling of the Christmas Story by Miss Stankiewicz assisted by the students of Grade 8 who pantomimed the narration and the entire student body who sang and signed "Silent Night." Musical accompaniment was provided by school parents Rita Campoli and Denise Gannon.

CHICAGO (CNS) - Students at Chicago's Mundelein Seminary at St. Mary of the Lake University will have a bountiful collection added to their library, thanks to the generosity of the late Chicago Cardinal Joseph L. Bernardin.

According to "Msgr. Kenneth Velo, executor of the cardinal's will, a substantial collection of books will be donated to the seminary library.

"The cardinal thought these books would be appropriate for the seminarians because many of them are scriptural, liturgical and theological in nature," said Msgr.

Velo, president of the Catholic Church Extension Society.

Msgr. Velo, who had been the cardinal's 'personal aide and was homilist at Cardinal Bernardin's funeral Mass Nov. 20, said'·the cardinal enjoyed 19th- and 20thcentury biographies. Several of them are included in the collection.

"He especially liked books about Pope Paul VI and (President) Truman," Msgr. Velo said ·ina telephone.interview.

The remainder of the estate, which Msgr. Velo said was modest, will be directed toward charitable organizations within the Archdiocese·of Chicago.

"Some might expect that the cardinal's estate would be on a par with a CEO of a major corporation," Msgr. Velo said, "but in fact

he just earned the salary of a priest."

The sum of $1,000 was designated by Cardinal Bernardin to be used for Mass stipends to be . offered forthe repose (If his soul.

Msgr. Velo said the funds will be put into the general stipend, and the Masses will be offered throughout the archdiocese particularly in poorer parishes some by retired priests, and others offered privately.

Mass was offered Dec. 14 in Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral for the intentions ofCardinal Bernardin. His.galero,.the ceremonial hat with tassels, was raised to hang from the cathedral's ceiling.

Cardinal Bernardin was the fifth cardinal archbishop of Chicago, and his would be the fifth galero to 'be raised in such a ceremony.

Msgr. Velo said :he recently offered Mass for the intentions of .those. whom Cardinal Bernardin included in his cancer prayer ministry. "But it was a personal ministry of the cardinal's, and we have found that many on the list have died," he said.

He has no plans to as~;ume the ministry at this time. He is currently directing his attention to the outpouring of letters from around the world responding to his homily at the cardinal's funeral Mass.

"I am trying to personally answer each letter," Msgr. Velo said.

World Food Summit ends, but 'its work is meant to continue

Malnutrition still contributes to the deaths of 11,000 children per day - one every eight seconds.

More than 800 million people in the world, one-fourth of them under

age five, remain without adequate food.
