FALL RIVER - The countless religious men and women who for more than a century have played such an important role in their commitment to service to the Church in the Fall River diocese, will be honored at a World Day for Consecrated Life Mass February 4 at 4 p.m., in St. Mary's Cathedral. Bishop George W. Coleman will be the principal celebrant at the Saturday Mass, which is the vigil of the dedicated Sunday observance of remembrance initiated worldwide five years ago by the late Pope John Paul II. While all parishes are invited to attend the Mass in the cathedral, other Masses for religious are scheduled at individual parishes on the weekend to highlight the place of Consecrated Life in

contemporary society. An invitation to join the celebration at the cathedral was made this week by Mercy Sister Elaine Heffernan, the bishop's representative to religious, who is coordinator of the event. "Please plan to join all the religious of the diocese in this eucharistic act of thanksgiving for the call to consecrated life and as a public witness of the joy and vitality of those who respond wholeheartedly to that call," Sister Heffernan said. Because it will be a unique expression of the regard of the diocese for all members of religious life, hopefully all religious will make a special effort to take part, and to make a public renewal of their vows, Sister Heffernan added. .

NORTH DARTMOUTH - A contingent of young people, including students from all four diocesan high schools, will travel with adults from the diocese Sunday to the 33rd annual Pro-Life March in Washington, D.C. They will be part of an expected crowd of 250,000 people gathering peacefully in support of the sanctity of all human life. For diocesan Pro-Life Director Marian Desrosiers, it's an exciting time as preparations tum into the actual pilgrimag~. . "It's an opportunity to remind our government and our country that we are a people of life and for life with no exceptions," said Desrosiers, who is looking forward to the journey. "It's especially significant this year with so much weighing on the Supreme Court appointments. That will impact the Roe v. Wade decision and is something that we should continue to pray about." Prayer will be a big part of the weekend as the

pilgrims will attend Sunday night Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It will be concelebrated by a host of priests, bishops and cardinals. According to Desrosiers, it is the most moving part of the pilgrimage for many. "'!bey are expecting 8,000 people for the Mass and there is always an overflowing number of youth present. It's awesome to see so many young people." On the day of the march, the Rally for Life and Youth Mass will be celebrated at the MCI Center beginning at 7 a.m. It will feature internationally known musicians and bands including Tony Melendez. The national Rally for Life, themed "Roe v. Wade Violat<;ls the American Way," will follow at noon on the National Mall. Legislators in support of life will speak as well as men and women who have experienced the pain of abortion. Bob and Mary Schindler, parents of the late Terri Schiavo, Tum to page 16 -March

Besides teaching, Brothers at Holy Cross and in othercommunities have also branched out into other fields such as social work, the elderly, and ministry and work among specialized populations. For another religious, retired Brother Roger (Andre) Millette, 80, of the Brothers of Christian Instruction, currently assigned to Bishop Connolly High School, where, for 25 years he was assis-

"Our congregation was founded with the intention and goal to work with the poor, and we .1Idid with great love and enthUSIasm and much prayer. However, living in a religious community dedicated around the clock to the poor, is no longer common here in America,

because now we are the middle class," Brother Millette, who is celebrating his 63rd year as a Brother, opined. "But like young people in France or Spain or Canada where we once had a bountiful supply of vocations, candidates here are fewer because secularism and materialism have taken their toll."
