The annual Bishop's Charity Ball, scheduled for Jan. 12, at Venus de Milo, Swansea, is a celebration of the unity of the Fall River diocese, a unjty emerging from the rich diversity of people, young and old, who constitute its "people of God." The 1996 accent will be on youth, said Msgr. Thomas J. Harrington, Diocesan Director of Catholic Gharities. The chorus of Bishop Feehan High School, Attleboro, will sing the National Anthem and lead ballgoers in "God Bless America." A Ball highlight every year is presentation of young ladies rep.resentingdiocesan pariShes to Bishop Sea,n P. O'Malley. Miss Claire OToole of Fall River, chair of the committee planning this important part ofthe program, said 28 young women will participate in this year's Ball. Among them is Ann Vardo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vardo, who will represent Saint Mary's parish, New' Bedford. A senior at New Bedford High School, she plans to enter Roger Williams University to study marine biology. "I am very happy to have been selected," she said, and together with her mother and father, who will accompany her as she is intro-
duced to Bishop O'Malley, she is "very much looking forward to that night." A member of Immaculate Conception parish, Taunton, Kathleen Moulding, will be another presentee this year. She is an active junior at Taunton High School, participating in the Select Chorus, the Drama Club and the Taunton chapter of Students Against Drunk Driving. Her mother, Mrs. Robert Moulding, who with her husband will accompany their daughter to the Ball, said "Bob and I are very proud of our daughter and excited about the coming event." Ball proceeds help Bishop Sean O'Malley to meet the increasing costs of the apostolates and services funded each year through the Catholic Charities Appeal.
Ball tickets may be obtained at any parish in the diocese, or through members of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women or the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Admission is $25 per couple. Friends of Catholic Charities who wish to donate larger amounts are encouraged to contact Charity Ball headquarters in Fall River at their earliest opportunity, at telephones 676-8943 or 676-3200. Videotaping planned This year the Ball will be shared and enjoyed in a new way long after the evening's festivities have ended. Working together, the diocesan Office of Communications and the Bishop's Charity Ball committee have arranged for a professional video company to tape the gala fund raiser.

The Ball, which helps support a variety of diocesan ministries, has always been noted for its music, dancing, and elegant presentation ceremony of young women who represent the future of the diocesan Church and its parishes. Now the pageantry of the occasion will be permanently captured on video. Tapes will be distributed by the Communications Office to local cable channels for broadcast, enabling a wider group of persons throughout the diocese to enjoy the special event. Interested persons should check the Anchor later this month for a complete listing of broadcast dates and times or contact their local cable channel. Tapes will also be available for sale at a minimum cost so that parish presentees, their families and friends, and other Ball supporters can relive the sights and sounds of the night. Diocesan Director of Communications Rev. John F. Moore noted that the videotaping of another diocesan tradition, the Marian Medals ceremony, has been well received and that when he approached Msgr. Thomas J. Harrington, Catholic Charities Appeal director with the idea of taping the Ball, he received a very enthusiastic "Let's do it!"
