Triple play: Marae Leggs Assignment Editor This is the sixth year that RSC has had an active women’s softball team, but it is the first year that they get to practice and play on their own turf. The women’s softball team has just received not only a new playing field and fresh paint but also a new head softball coach. The new field, which is located in the northeastern corner of the campus, is still an active work in progress. Nevertheless, school officials believe that the new field should have a tremendous impact on the team; hopefully increasing their fan base dramatically. THE NEW TEAM The Lady Raiders are made up of 23 RSC students, with five sophomores and 18 incoming freshmen. All members of the team must be enrolled as full-time students and meet all other athletics requirements. In years past, the girls softball team has had to practice and play games at other area fields, including some elementary school fields. But beginning in August,

The women’s softball team discusses strategies for the upcoming spring softball season. Lady Raiders will have the benefit of a new head coach, Dr. Debbie Lynch, their own new playing field and a new set of teammates. The team began practicing before Lynch received the appointment as their new head coach by working out in the Weight Room, running and following other directions given by assistant coach Mike Brown. the girls took to their new playing field. Rain or shine they practice from 1:30-4p.m. every Monday through Saturday. But their demanding schedule doesn’t keep the girls from hitting the books, too. “Our new coach has made us aware that we will have study hall and plenty of resources to succeed on and off the field,” said Akeilah Clark, a first year geosciences major, who is attending RSC on a scholarship. Although softball games do not get underway until Feb. 12, 2007 the team does plan to scrimmage with other area schools at least 8-10 times this fall.
THE NEW FIELD What started in the spring as a project to build the women’s softball team a quality practice field eventually blossomed into an ongoing venture that began with the installation of a premium base for the women’s playing field. “We did not take any short cuts,” Ivan Quate, director for operations, said. “We want to provide a college level playing field for the school.” This continuing job was paid through the Athletics budget and also from the Student Activities fund. So far, RSC has spent more than $45,000 on this project.
As part of the continuing project, workers will be setting forms for the dugouts next week, along with adding some topsoil to even out the field, laying sod and adding fences to the sides. After that, they will concentrate on laying the concrete pads that will eventually hold bleachers for fans to come and cheer on their Lady Raiders. THE NEW COACH Along with a new playing field, the women’s softball team also gained a new coach. Head coach Dr. Debbie Lynch said she is looking forward to establishing a successful tradition both

on the softball field, in the classroom and within the RSC community. “We [myself and my staff] will do everything we can to help the girls move on,” she said. Lynch also said that the “great team” she has is largely due to successful recruiting by the assistant coach and supporting staff during the summer. “They did an excellent job this summer of putting into place a program with great potential,” she said. ‘Passport to Learning’ now available for Raiders Renee Taylor Contributing Writer New and returning students are being offered a new design program that will help enhance their ability to be successful in college. This program was designed by L. Dean Fisher, associate vice president for Enrollment, Dr. Jeanie Webb, vice president for Student Affairs, and Dr. Jay Kinzer, dean for Student Life, in the hope that the more students participate, the more they will learn. Passport To Learning will provide participating students a chance to win a laptop computer or an iPod in the spring. Students issued fall passports will need to participate in a total of 32 of the 43 listed events. Students will receive a stamp when attending specified events. If there is no way of getting a stamp, the student will need to show other verification, such as when a student visits the RSC Web site, he or she will print a page from the site to show proof of the visit. Completed passports are to be turned in by April 13, 2007. Winners will be announced during Springfest on April 19, 2007. Some of the fall events listed are student senate elections, Sept. 6-7 and the “Presentation to Italy” on Sept. 12. Annual events include UCO Game day and a service learning activity. Spring events include the Miss Rose State College/ Midwest City Scholarship pageant, Feb. 8 and the student Car Show, April 7 . Potential student senators prepare for campus elections Joshua Pace News Editor RSC wants students to get out and vote, Towry Barnard, coordinator of Student Activities, said – and as enticement, voters will earn a chance to win a number of prizes, including a flat screen TV. Students who choose to vote in the upcoming student senate elections can opt to enter a drawing for a chance to win the flat screen TV or other prizes, such as an Apple iPod or Sonny X-box, Barnard said. Elections will be held from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 6 and 7, at the Student Activities Information Desk, located in the Student Center. All students who choose to vote
should have their student ID number with them. The drawing will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 after the polls close. Although the drawing does offer an incentive to vote, it also allows students to choose a representative voice on campus, which is important to the quality of their educational experience at RSC, Barnard said. “The Student Senate is the voice of the student body, so I would encourage everyone to care about who represents them to the administration,” she said. Daniel McClure, student senate president, echoed that sentiment and said voting would also be a great way for students to get involved on campus. There are 25 senate positions
this year, Barnard said. Of those, four have been filled by the executive officers who were voted in during the spring semester, and five were selected by each division as Division Merit Appointees. That leaves 16 positions available, and, as of press time, 29 applicants are vying for those open seats. However, that does not mean there could not be more applicants, Barnard said. “We’re getting applications in every day,” she said. “But we still want to encourage people to apply [for a senate position].” For more information, contact Student Activities by visiting the Student Activities Informaton Desk or by calling 733-7918. jpace@rose.edu
