Project Success, a chance for students with questions about their majors to receive help, will be offering students insights into the various majors Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Main Dining Room in the Student Center. Project Success is a gathering of faculty from the various divisions at RSC for the benefit of students with questions about majors. RSC was inspired to organize this affair after a similar event at a Denver, Colo. community college. Students attending Project Success will have the chance to “gain insight from faculty in your major, obtain recommendations for your spring 2005 class schedule, learn more about career opportunities and learn more about transfer opportunities from faculty in your major,” according to a flyer about the event. Project Success is a once-a-semester event, and this semester will be the second time RSC has hosted Project Success for students seeking guidance in their major. Last year, roughly 150 students showed up to take advantage of the free information and help being offered. It does not cost anything to attend Project Success and the event is open to the public who are considering returning to college and would like an idea of the various majors they might be able to pursue at RSC. “We also intend to have some booths there in the Main Dining Room for Student Services and Financial Aid so if students have any questions, the resources [will be] there,” said Dean Fisher, associate vice president of enrollment management. “At 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, there will be some specialized sessions led by the Health Sciences faculty,” said Fisher.

“So, if someone wanted to be a nurse, they would have the opportunity to participate in a workshop with nursing faculty that will be more in-depth.” While none of the other departments will be holding special seminars, students will still be able to talk with faculty about their major. “If [a person wants] to learn about being a historian, [they] can go visit with the history faculty at the Social Science [division] table,” said Fisher. “Our experience has been that the numbers of people interested in health science mer-
its that we do the workshops.” Free pizza will be served to Project Success attendees at 12 p.m., giving health sciences majors a chance to refuel before their seminars start. Students who attend the seminar do not need to bring anything with them, although they can bring along a copy of the classes they have previously taken if they cannot remember them. For people who would like to volunteer their time at the event, they can contact Fisherʼs office by calling 736-0223.
Campus to celebrate diversity Travis Tucker Sports Editor
October has been recognized by many as a month to celebrate cultural diversity by most colleges and universities. This year RSC will also recognize the month for the first time on Oct. 14, thanks to the efforts of Dr. James Cook, President of RSC, as well as the Student Activities Director, Towry Barnard, and student senate. This will be an extension to events already in place, such as Global Oklahoma, which showcases a different culture each year and also takes place in October. Intercultural day will be different in that this event will be centered towards student interest. Dr. Shenethia Manuel, presidential advisor on intercultural communication and education, is coordinating a number of food vendors to provide cuisine from several different cultures for the availability of taste-testing, but also encourages students, faculty and staff to bring cultural dishes to be enjoyed by everyone. Manuel would also like to see the students, faculty and staff wearing the attire of their favorite culture to celebrate the day. There will be approximately 10 exhibits from numerous student clubs on display as well as displays from individual students, which will be showcased throughout the month. Barnard has been handing out flyers and coordinating club participation for the event. She held a meeting on Oct. 7 to organize the clubs participation and stated, “The clubs were excited about the opportunity to be involved.” There will be quite a bit of entertainment brought to the school by Manuelʼs office as well. The festivities will begin at 9:15

a.m. with an introduction followed by the entertainers who are listed as follows: The Great American Indian Dancers at 9:15 a.m., Alvaroʼs Brazilian Jazz at 10 a.m., Loose Shoes at 10:45 a.m. and Willow Brook Elementary School at 11:30 a.m. with a presentation on historical individuals representing a number of cultural influences. Jahruba African Drums at 12:15 p.m., Jahruba Caribbean Music at 12:45 p.m. and possibly Scottish Music at 1:30 p.m. followed by an
announcement of the “best booth.” Alhough this is the first time such an event has taken place at RSC, those involved are very optimistic and are hoping that cultural diversity month will be celebrated for many years to come. Manuel said, “This is a day to enjoy our differences as well as celebrate our commonalties.” For more information on the event, call Manuelʼs office at 736-0393
