“With Grades 7-9 contestants, battling with Grade 10-11 students, you did an excellent job. Next year, we should maintain the rank, or place higher than expected.” Kenneth Jeason B. Garcia, Curriculum Instructions Services Division (CISD) Chief said on Monday.

With its second year in joining, the Philippine Science High School Caraga Region Campus garnered 2nd Runnerup (Overall Ranking) in the concluded Division Schools Press Conference last November 7-9, 2016 at Ong Yiu Central Elementary School.

Neophyte Pisay Journalists slayed the competition, namely Roy Angelo D. Velmonte and Tim Allen G. Ebron, as they ranked Champion, among mostly 30 opponents. Harold Giovannie A. Guelos, won 2nd place, in Sports Writing. Moniera Nice T. Planas, placed 2nd in the Editorial Writing, Filipino Category. Arianne Mer F. Paas, and Jessie Lix C. de Ramos Jr., Science and Technology News Feature Writers, ranked 2nd (Filipino Category) and 3rd (English Category), respectively. BG Yvonne C. Sabellano and Lawrence D. Osorio won 4th and 5th place in Copyreading and Headline Writing.

Bea Jane V. Serna ranked 6th, in the News Writing Category. Zennia Marie C. Granado, Filipino Feature Writer garnered 6th place.

Editorial Writer Eunice Joshua Gazmin won 10th place.

In the group category, The English Radio Broadcasting team, won 5th in Overall Best Radio Broadcast led by Rufiah Levi A. Medado. Jose Rybenn Rovi A. Rendon garnered 1st place in Best in Infomercial. Jason Gil P. Villanueva won 4th in Best News Anchor.

Danika Mae D. Soberano, and Katrina Lea G. Rosales, placed 3rd and 4th as Best News Presenters, respectively. The Filipino Radio Broadcasting team’s Infomercialist, Joshua A. Acido garnered 3rd place in Best in Infomercial. Elejune Ace B. Epanes also won 7th as Best News Anchor and Carl Marlo D. Asotigue as 4th in Best in Technical Application.

ictory was raised as Philippine Science High SchoolCARAGA Region Campus waved its banner during the conduct of the Regional Schools Press Conference at Agusan del Sur, where four journos grabbed spots during the awarding.

The said activity was held on December 1-4, 2016 at Agusan del Sur National High School, San Francisco, Agusan del Sur and was participated by a total of 11 students from Pshs crc, both from english and filipino publication. From the English Publication, Harold Giovannie A. Guelos ranked fourth place in Sports writing while Jose Rybenn Rovi A. Rendon bagged third place for the best in infomercial and finished second for the overall production.

The Filipino Club also rejoiced as two contestants ranked during the awarding, namely: Arianne Mer F. Paas, Science and Technology Feature writer who ranked 7th place and Moniera Nice T. Planas, an Editorial Writer who qualified for the National Schools Press Conference, ranking third place.

The National Schools Press Conference will take place soon on January 2017 at Pagadian city wherein Moniera Nice T. Planas will bring the name of PSHS-CRC.

The Filipino Collaborative Desktop Publishing Team, of Cecile Hidalgo, Kenneth Atienza, Kessiah Montereso, Hanford Gonzales, Krishna Yambot, Ciara De Paz, Samantha More, and Nikka Go also won 3rd place in Best Newsletter.

DOST-PSHS HOLDS 2016 NCE

The DOST-PSHS 2016 National Competitive Examination (NCE) was held in 115 designated testing centers all around the country. Applications were accepted in the different PSHS campuses, DOST offices, and Provincial Science and Technology offices from

Shaina Delia G. Tomaneng, a Grade 7 student of the Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus took the first place in the BCWD Water Quiz Championship against three remaining finalists on October 28, 2016 at the Butuan City Water District Office, with Mr. Rotchie Glen A. Francisco as her adviser.

The English TV Broadcasting Team, composed of Jewelle Marie S. Mejias, Eughien Frances F. Maquiling, Carl Djhon E. Gangca, Mc Clareenz L. Zerrudo, Ronnick Rey D. Ajoc, Regina Estrelieta C. Lambo, and Francesca Louise A. Tupaz placed 3rd in all group awards, and Francesca Louise A. Tupaz also won 2nd as Best TV Anchor. In the Filipino Category TV Broadcasting, with Daveigh Kate C. Abogado, Smurf Angelo M, Agbay, Mily Shey C. Gata, Angelo Mari C. Montero, Nathalie May A. Libres, Mac Harold T. Bañez, and Alexandra P. Layese won 2nd in all group awards. Mac Harold T. To join the National Buwan ng Wika 2016 Celebration, the Iskos and Iskas participated on such activity last August 30, 2016 at the PSHS-CRC Open Court.

“Filipino, Wika ng Karunungan” was the theme of the said event. PSHSCRC Scholars, Faculty and Staff, and Parents attended the said celebration.

Variety of competitions were conducted to all grade levels, namely: Wannabe, Singing of Tiera Adorada, Sayawit, Sabayang Pagbigkas, Isahang pag-awit o ang tawag ng Tanghalan, Pagsulat ng Tula, and Pagsulat ng Salaysay.

Section Turquoise achieved the top spot for the Sayawit, Section Sunflower for the Sabayang Pagbigkas,

the 28th of October 2016, Philippine Science High School – Caraga Region Campus (PSHS – CRC) held its First Card Giving Day for the school year at Malvar Hall, Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center. With the theme, “Sustaining Academic Excellence through Harnessing the Gifted Minds”, its purpose was to recognize the efforts and academic performances of the scholars for the First Quarter of S.Y. 2016-2017. The Mayor of Butuan City, Engr. Ronnie Vicente C. Lagnada was invited to be the guest speaker at the event but due to his busy schedule he was represented by the Vice Mayor of Butuan City, Hon. Jose “Joboy” S. Aquino III who inspired the students with his words.

The main event of the program was the awarding of certificates to the students who made it to the Director’s List, these are the students who garnered a General Weighted Average of 1.500 and above. This is usually the most awaited moment of every card giving day where the students receive awards for their hard work as they sit and enjoy meals and performances by their fellow scholars.

December 15, 2016, the students and staff of Philippine Science High School CARAGA Region Campus celebrated their annual Christmas party inside the current school campus.

The students and faculty members alike decorated their respective classrooms with beautiful ornaments and shared food and gifts with each other.

The program started at exactly eight in the morning and ended early. It was everybody’s way of commemorating the festive Christmas holiday and unwind from the stressful quarterly exams. Elle Plaza, a seventh grade pupil, said, “The school Christmas party was unlike any other, the rooms looked like a part of a Christmas wonderland.” Student Edizza Abamonga said, “From strangers to family, the christmas party was definitely one awesome celebration.”

The people involved felt delighted and students hope for more celebrations to come.

The scholars were divided into groups to compete against each other in events for 1st place in games sporting a certain subject categories regarding humanities. These categories were English, Filipino, PEHM, Values Education and Social Sciences with a mix of Laro ng Lahi. Teachers were assigned to facilitate each team with each student and teachers working very hard to get the gold in the CRC campus as they showed flying colors of teamwork and cooperation using their wit and muscle.

ast December 12, 2016 marked the 4th anniversary of Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus. As part of the institution’s socio-civic involvement and service, the school organized a series of events which includes a community outreach. Different clubs went to different organizations, and with that different stories and voices were heard. Members of the English Publication and Science Club went to Bethany Homes located at Barangay Caridad, Butuan City.

Bethany is a place in which young girls from different places are put together in one place to rehabilitate their minds from the struggles they encountered at a very young age. Students actively participated and were kind enough to donate clothing and other necessities to the girls. The main objective of the activity was to give back and share the spirit of

Christmas towards everyone in the community. The students along with the faculty and staff conducted games and gave gifts towards the girls of Bethany.

The staff of Bethany were extremely grateful for the kindness and generosity of PSHS-CRC.

And with that Philippine Science High School-Caraga Region Campus (PSHS-CRC) does not only strive to create young budding scientist that our country needs, we also work to make a positive impact within our community. It is our philosophy to give back when we can and always try to make a positive difference in the lives of those who may need a helping hand. Over the past four years, PSHS CRC has been involved with several charitable organizations and outreach programs. This year was certainly a success.

In the events for Laro ng Lahi there was Luksong Tinik and sack race which were, although dangerous, fun for the scholars. Some scholars sported injuries falling down during the sack race but came out with smiles and a good experience. For English there were Scrabble, Text Twist, and Spelling Bee where the scholars showed their English skills against each other. A sure nosebleed it was for the scholars.

In PEHM, there was the Amazing Fitness Race which was a series of obstacles the scholars have to use their physical skills on to get over. It was a race to the finish line with every team moving from station to station portraying teamwork.

Social Sciences sported the Landmark hunt where scholars combed the school grounds for landmarks in groups in order to name them. This event brought out the traveller in the scholars and their international knowledge of pop culture.

All these events were a good way of leisure to exercise the humanities subjects which are still as fundamental as the SMCT subjects. Fun and smiling faces were all around in that week as the awarding added a shiny medal to the future leaders of the Philippines.

CVisC hosts 4th PSHS Campus Journalism Summit

With this year’s theme: “Pressing forward.”, the nobble act of every journalist of waking up before the day begins, Philippine Science High School-Central Visayas Campus successfully hosted the 4th PSHS Campus Journalism Summit at its site in Argao,Cebu on July 2527 2016. This 3-day summit was participated by 4 campus journalists and 2 school paper advisers from 14 Pisay campuses.

The first day of the summit started with the preliminaries. In the afternoon, Mr. Marvin Enderes of Colegio San Agustin Makati provided some feedbacks on the last summit’s collaborative desktop publishing outputs, reviewed important concepts on layout and design of school papers and gave some do’s and don’ts in lay-outing. After which, scholars were given the chance to share the things they have learned about lay-outing.

The second day of the summit focused on script writing for TV Broadcasting, a newly added group contest in the National Schools Press Conference. Ms. Mercelle Matundan of PSHS-Central Luzon Campus offered lectures regarding the topic and critiqued the sample scripts developed by the scholars.

The events for this year’s Math Olympiad include a math quiz bowl which is an oral competition divided into 3 divisions namely: easy, average, and difficult. The quiz masters for this event were Grade 9 statistics teacher Ms. Katrina B. Centeno and grade 9 integrated science teacher Mr. Rotchie Glen A. Francisco. The contestants were divided into 16 groups with each team consisting of one representative from grade 7,grade 8, and grade 9. Trivia questions were also presented to the audience in between every category.

The second event was a Rubik’s Cube Challenge which involved 9 participants. The mechanics of the event was to solve a randomly scrambled rubik’s cube at the shortest amount of time possible.

This year’s theme “Committing to Achieve Mathematics Competence: Enhance, Explore, Enjoy” outlined the events and activities at the PSHS-CRC campus that day. At the beginning of the program, the Campus Director, Ms. Ruwina S. Gonzaga gave her welcome address which was then followed by the reading of quiz bowl mechanics by Math club adviser, Ms. Daisyre Mae G. Gomez.

The champions for the 2016 Math Olympiad Quiz Bowl competition were composed of Hans Ciano, Jo Dee Salise, and Yves Nuyad. They were then followed by Robert Guisando, MG Arreza, and Danielle Ajoc at second place, and Shaina Tomaneng, Maureen Tupas, and Patricia Tamin at third place. For the rubik’s cube competition, the champion was Ezra Tejol who was then followed by Jon Harvey Vicariato at second place and Kit Lester Balayo at third place.

hilippine Science High School Caraga Region Campus takes on the road to success as Moniera Nice T. Planas, a Grade 9 student won 3rd place in Editorial Writing (Filipino) during the Regional Schools Press Conference held in Agusan del Sur National High School on December 1 - 5, 2016.

“I was not expecting my name to be called as one of the top seven winners, yet alone to be a third placer.” , as Ms. Planas said.

Despite being flooded in their quarters at San Francisco Pilot Central Elementary School, Nice still managed to train a few days before her event with her coach Ms. Baby Joy Tomarong.

September 1, 2016, Monday, the PSHSCRC held the first ever club picnic in Brgy. Tiniwisan, Butuan City, Agusan del Norte. Primarily, the purpose was to show the students the progression of the on-going construction of their campus, and to renew the oath of the school’s personnel as well. Tents of each club were set up just outside the main gate, where it was overlooking the campus. With multicabs, the students were transported from the school to the venue.

The program started with the opening prayer led by Anna Naranjo, a G9-Sodium student and afterwards was the singing of the National Anthem conducted by Apphia Trillo, a G8-Sunflower student.

The welcome remarks was given by the Campus Director, Ms. Ruwina S. Gonzaga, which was then followed by the renewal of oath of the PSHS-CRC personnel administered by her as well. A musical presentation was performed by the Glee Club, and an inspirational message from the GPTA President, Mr. Nestor B. Gumahad was given next.

PISAY CRC FIRST TIME OPINION SCRIBE GRABS MAJOR AWARD IN RSPC ‘16

The last day of the summit centered on script reading and voice modulation for TV broadcasting. Mr. Pocholo Gonzales, the voice master,

talked about the power of voice and encouraged the participants to use Dr. Jose Rizal’s greatness as a model to become great people nowadays. The voice master divided the scholars into groups who were tasked to perform a live TV broadcasting news program.

Voice Care Philippines’ Executive Director Ada Cuaresma discussed about voice modulation and gave some tips on proper breathing and taught the participants some exercises to help develop voice modulation.

The next journalism summit is expected to happen at PSHS-SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus.

“Mr. Catarman really inspired me whenever I write editorial articles.”, Nice stated happily when asked about her inspiration. “His words motivated me a lot.”, she added.

hilippine Science High School – Caraga Region Campus held a Gender and Development Kids Seminar on good grooming at Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center on November 18, 2016 with Ms. Joy Dyana V. Cervantes, DOH staff, as guest speaker.

All 253 PSHS Scholars actively participated the said event with the proponents who spearheaded this seminar.

GAD Personnel were also visible to supervise the work of the Students.

The session aimed to teach young scholars to attain good grooming for their body and appearance but it mainly regulates the wellness and health of the individuals. As the speaker has said “If you feel good, you do great”, she taught the scholars proper posture when sitting on the chair, the importance of grooming,

and how and why we should accomplish it, and the advantage of having a neat hairstyle as in keeping them decent.

Cervantes even discussed lessons that acquired open mindedness as well as hygiene on sexual parts of the body as one of her points on her discussion.

All throughout the activity, the scholars learned a lot.

o increase awareness on the importance of Agriculture in our country, the Philippine Science High School Caraga Region Campus (PSHSCRC) initiated the Science Camp 2016 in connection to the Science Club Month Celebration 2016, at the Calo Horse Farm, Cabadbaran, Agusan Del Norte, last September 16, 2016.

The theme of the said event, was “AGRINOVATE: Revolutionizing Agricultural Outlook for Sustainable Growth.” All 253 students, with the Faculty and Staff participated the said activity. Camps and Sub-camps named after the Branches of Science served as teams on the Science Camp. PSHSCRC Science Teachers collaborated with the Science Club, led by Mr. Jay M. Maique, Science Coordinator, and Ms. Pia R. Aboloc, Science Club Adviser.

“A human should plant an average of 20 trees in his/ her lifetime, so you should do your part.” Said Daniel Calo, the owner of Calo Horse Farm as he had a talk to the Campers about Biodiversity.

It started with an invocation led by Ms. Babyjoy Tomarong, followed by the singing of the National Anthem which was conducted by Ms. Retchel Medel, and the Welcome Remarks by the Campus Director, Ms. Ruwina S. Gonzaga. Following that was the Field Demonstration, Presentation of Yells, and the giving of Camp Rules by the Disciplinary Officer, Ms. Katrina

Activities such as the AGRImissions and the Physics Olympics were participated by all the Camps, namely: Natural Science, Social Science, Applied Science, and Earth Science with 3 sub-camps (sub-branches) each.

Camp Natural Science bagged the Best Camp, Applied Science as 1st Runner up, 2nd Runner up was Social Science, and 3rd Runner Up was Earth Science. Minor award were bagged by Social Science with the Best Camp Yell, and Camp Applied Science as the Most Disciplined Camp.

It ended with the Closing Remarks by the Assistant Chief of the CISD, Engr. Jecelyn Elorta, the Closing Prayer by Ms. Mary Joy E. Bantugan, and the PSHS Hymn which was led by Jamela Beniga, a Grade 9 student.

With his plans and platforms proposed during the Miting de avance on August 4,2016, he was able to persuade the scholars to appoint him to office.

The scholars have also appointed the following scholars to their respective offices: Danika Mae D. Soberano as Vice-President; Sophia Mae Lagrimas as Secretary; Bryah Arabella M. Años as Treasurer; Eughien Frances F. Maquiling as Auditor; Andre Uriel Tapales as Public Information Officer or PIO; Rufiah Levi A. Medado as Business Manager; Susanne Christinie Hierl as Grade 7 Representative; Jea Shekainah Matondo as Grade 8 Representative; and Tim Allen G. Ebron as Grade 9 Representative.

The said scholars are set to lead the school for the school year 2016-2017 with the guidance of the school government adviser, Ms. Shriegly Mae Morales.#

PSHS- CRC ON ITS 4TH FOUNDATION DAY KICK BY: KIT LESTER P. BALAYO

hilippine Science High School- Caraga Region Campus celebrated Foundation Day on its 4th Year with the theme ‘PSHS-CRC @ 4’n 4: KaPisayahan at KaPistahan sa araw ng KaPaskuhan’ on December 12 -15 at PSHS- CRC Ground.

On the Fourth year of PSHS- CRC, 4 different activities were done in 4 days of celebrating Foundation Day held at PSHSCRC Ground.

On the First Day of Foundation Day, Teacher’s Training and Community Outreach were done at Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. SSD Chief Ms. Yvonne M. Mordeno was the in-charge of the activity.

On the same day, Math Olympiad took place at PSHSCRC ground spearheaded by Ms. Daisyre Mae G. Gomez, SST-1 Mathematics Teacher. Five (5) students in every section were chosen to participate in the said activity with three students in each team. In the afternoon, an Outreach Activity to six different institutions was conducted. The English Publication together with the Science Club gave happiness and gifts to the Bethany Home for Girls.

The second Day of the celebration was a green day to the PSHS-CRC community. All scholars went through the hardhsips of planting ornamental plants. With the tips given by Ms. Mayrose Endriga, FAD clerk, healthy plants are expected to be placed to PSHS- CRC’s future campus. Together with PSHS- CRC Campus Director, Ms. Ruwina S. Gonzaga, SSD Chief Ms. Yvonne Mordeno, ALA Coordinator Ms. Jecelyn R. Elorta, FAD Chief, Ma’am Flora Mae O. Tormento, and CISD chief Mr. Kenneth Jeason B. Garcia, the Green day turned out to be a happy day.

Afterwards, students got busy preparing for their own booths. Designs were completed on that day for the judging of the colorful booths by the next day. Finally, the last part of the day, which was the GPTA get together started right after the preparation for the booths.

The third day of the foundation, was all about the booth fair which was won by the Grade 7- Aquamarine under Ms. Roselyn Canoy’s advisory and Susie Hierl’s leadership.

Followed by the judging of Pista sa Nayon which was still won

by Grade 7- Aquamarine in Best Dress. And the Last activity was the entertaining magic show.

At the end of the day, everybody got home happily from the start of the celebration until the last activity. Through the entertaining magic shows, jokes and the lively performances of students, this Foundation day was a very memorable day to the PSHSCRC community.

BUTUAN— On August 20,2016 the PSHS CRC conducted an event exclusively for the Grade 7 Students, to a Local History Field Trip around Butuan City. An opening program was held at the PSHSCRC Ground, together with a prayer and a few reminders for the 1-day activity.

The students were assigned into their groups, to participate in an activity in which they should capture a picture together with a specific object that can be found on their destination. The activity will also be considered as their Social Science project.

With 90 students around, vans were used for Transportation to the 7 Local History Sites. The destinations were at Balanghai Hotel, National Museum Butuan Branch, Butuan Shrine, Hill Site “Bood”, Balangay Replica, Bequibel Shell Midden, and at Banza Church Ruins. Unfortunately, only 3 vans can go into one destination due to the limited space that the sites can accommodate.

Just before the students travel, Campus Director III Ms. Ruwina S. Gonzaga bids good bye and good luck to all the students. A tour guide was along with the students to give information and fun facts about the History

The students of Philippine Science High School-CRC recollect and share on September 12-14, 2016 at Mazaua Island Resort with guest speaker Noel Lorene C. Agcaoili, hidden thoughts and feelings released in order to transform the mind and change

of Butuan. The National Museum Butuan Branch, Balanghai Hotel, and the Butuan shrine was visited first by the students in the morning.

Right after every destination, the students participated and went through their task. Around noon, the destination was at Hill Site “Bood”. The teachers agreed to let the students eat their lunch there to make use of the time. After having their lunch, the students were once again conjoined and went together to the last 4 destinations.

While at Bequibel Shell Midden, donations were asked from the students, including the teachers and other staffs. A shell Midden is where people from the past gather their trashes together.

At the Balangay Replica, a small game together with the students and other teachers and staffs was participated. The last destination, was at Banza Church Ruins. The fact that the real Banza Church Ruins is under the big balete tree and the whole bell tower was covered by it, mesmerized the students.

According to some students, it was nice to take a time off and enjoy the history and view of the places they visited. The students went back to the campus safely.The points of each group was announced the day after of the local History Field Trip.

Different grade levels on each day, September 13 was the day for grade 7 students. With the theme: “Transforming Minds: Changing Lives Towards a Purpose Driven Scholar.” Mr. Agcaoili spoke words that the students pondered on their minds. “S.T.O.P., silence, think, open-up, and pray” Mr. Agcaoli told the students.

He asked questions and gave prizes to whoever answers correctly which motivated the students to participate.

Vision, values, wisdom and God were the 4 main topics of the day. At the beginning Mr. Noel said, “Where there is no vision, people perish.” Around half way through the program the students were given the chance to share their negative thoughts and doings they have done and what will they do about it. Some tears were shed, groups of people hugging each other. A smile of relief was seen in the faces os scholars.

The program ended with Mr. Noel’s words: “Know that Jesus is the only way to the Father”, the students nodded with understanding. The recollection truly transformed the minds and changed the lives of the scholars.

PSHS-CRC WELCOMES BATCH 2017 BY: AMILY MARIELLE REYES

As a formal welcome for the Freshmen for the school year 2016-2017, Philippine Science High School CRC conducted its Freshmen field day with the upcoming grade 7 students participating. It was held last August 1, 2016 at Philippine Science High School Caraga Region Campus. The program was led by the SG officers and their SG adviser, Ma’am Daisyre Gomez. There were lots of games played, and also some participative activities like question and answer. Everybody was given a chance to play because they were divided into three groups namely; Durmstrang, Beauxbatons, and Hogwarts.

All of the students and the teachers seemed so happy especially during the Mr. and Ms. Freshman Field Day part.

Everybody was mesmerized by the candidates whom shared their knowledge in the question and answer portion. Also, the candidates were so confident when they shared their extraordinary talents to the people. Ms. Fiona Ladaga and Mr. Chloe John Ballesteros were declared the winners of the said so-called-pagaent. After all, the Freshmen Field Day of Philippine Science High School Caraga Region Campus went so successful not just because of the students and the teachers but also with the support of their Campus Director, Ms. Ruwina S. Gonzaga.#

CRC CELEBRATES WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY 2016

On October 19, 2016, PSHS-CRC celebrates its annual World Teacher’s Day and Faculty and Staff Day Celebration with the theme: Guro, Kabalikat sa Pagbabago.

The time where we grandly present our heart felt gratitude towards our teachers for their efforts. Held in our school grounds, the Supreme Student Government (SSG) facilitated the activity and conducted a program where students brought joy and inspiration to the teachers and staff by showcasing their talents and gratitude. The program started with a prayer led by Sussane Christine Hierl from Grade 7 Aquamarine followed by the National Anthem conducted by Bea Jane V. Serna from Grade 8 Anthurium. SSG president Jace Kahlil Gumahad gave the opening Remarks.

On that day, Sir Johnfecar Maestrado, a grade 8 adviser and Social Science teacher bids his farewell to pursue his studies, Sir Michael Jay Arizala a grade 9 Computer Science teacher also left for personal reason, and maam Mary Joy E. Bantugan, a grade 8 Integ. Science teacher and a grade 9 adviser also left because of health issues. It was the last time the students get to see and extend their appreciation to them.

The students gave letters to the teachers and had the opportunity to dance with them. Roses, cookies, and balloons were given during the program to show appreciation to the teachers. Then the presidents of each sections dedicated a speech to their subject teachers for their passion and dedictaion when it comes to teaching. To give thanks for all the sacrifices they have shown, a tribute was lead by the PSHS-CRC students. The program was then closed with a memorable meassage by the Campus Director - Ms. Ruwina S. Gonzaga.

they’ve managed to do one Eco-friendly act and are satisfied with themselves, they go back to destroying their planet, and the whole process repeats itself. There are but a few who truly dedicate their lives to saving the Earth.

It’s amazing how those who do try to save the Earth make little to no difference, but it’s even more amazing how much damage people can do without even trying. The end truly is near, and it will be a grand one at that.

lace the Earth in the oven and set the timer to the 21st Century, by that time the Earth should be cooked all-over and ready to eat, the bacteria that once lived on it would be dead. All those people desperately trying to save their world but you already know what’s going to happen. The Earth will heat up, gradually but surely, and by the 21st the Earth would be nice and crispy, and cleansed from those that once called it home. It’s even funny to watch those people, complain and complain, having Earth Days and “Save the Earth” events and yet every other day they just contribute more and more to their own damnation.

Humans are very interesting creatures.

They are as stupid as they are amusing.

The beginning of industrialization marked the start of the Earth’s story, and now it’s coming to an end. They take materials from the Earth to build machines to save it. They chop down trees to make paper, only to waste it and make “Save the trees” banners to start rallies. They indulge in such luxuries, using air conditioners that cool their houses but warm the Earth. Humans truly do care for their home.

For years, people have followed a very simple pattern. They destroy, pollute and destroy, then they realize what they’ve done and do mediocre efforts to make amends, or some just blame and complain. Then when

internet technology develops, more and more people are exposed to social media, but this also increases the risks for users and the cases of cyber-bullying, with cases ranging from petty name-calling, to extreme cases such as forced child-pornography. Cyber bullying goes beyond the irresponsible use of media and online platforms. Cyber bullying often involves the disclosure of personal information, exploitation of children, sometimes for sexual purposes, and loss of lives. This side of cyber-bullying is often ignored by most of the population as they are limited to the image that cyber bullying is just online bullying.

Cyber bullying is a problem that affects billions, and as such should not be taken lightly. The problem with cyber-bullying is that although everyone knows about it, most still do it unintentionally. Without the Intention of doing it, people offend others, especially with today’s easily offended generation.

Those who do prevent it limit it to teasing, when in reality cyber-bullying is a lot more serious. Protective agencies and schools

teach children how to prevent online teasing, but they don’t teach how to respond to severe forms of cyberbullying. Children who aren’t guided properly often disclose personal information that could be taken advantage of.

S c h o o l s and protective organizations should not limit the cyber bullying to simple teasing, because this is not always the case.

They should also offer additional information and guidance about the more serious cases.

They should teach the children how to deal with abusive adults.

Children should be taught how to deal with

every instance of cyberbullying, whether it be minor or major, so when the time comes they’ll know what to do and how to protect themselves.

There are many problems involving cyber-bullying, wrongly informing the people about is a problem as well. Every child can prevent teasing on their own, but what if someone asked your child for obscene pictures, are you sure they already know what to do?

THE SCIENCE OF UNAWARENESS AND IGNORANCE - MARLON GIOVANNI O. ARREZA

Every year, Science takes one step further into the domain of the unknown. Every year comes new names, inventions, concepts and ideas that help change the world one innovation at a time. In the Philippines, the National Science and Technology Week occurs yearly to commemorate the contributions of those brave few who dared to strive for change. However, all efforts come to naught as it seems only a few care about the event. Most students upon hearing news of the NSTW think of it as a week-long break, but only few truly appreciate the event, its purpose, and importance.

This week of appreciation and learning has been degraded to nothing more than “just another week-long event”. The public’s lack of knowledge will affect the Filipinos’ livelihoods and how our leaders make their decisions. The country’s problems can only be solved together, and not just by relying on selected individuals. The problem is that every-day citizens can’t contribute anything significant to fix the problem for they lack knowledge to help in the first place. This is brought upon by their lack of interest to learn. Most people just whine and complain and expect others to solve their problems for them. The fact that the general population, including the young and the old, show little interest concerning the NSTW shows that this issue is not just with the young. This mentality is passed on to future generations.

The problem cannot be blamed on the DOST for they have expressed more than enough effort to raise awareness. The people can’t be blamed, for they won’t care without reason or incentive. The problem lies not with lack of awareness but of the wrong type.

People generally perceive science events as events only for smart people and geniuses. Instead of teaching overcomplicated science, the DOST are challenged to encourage the people by showing them how the inventions can help them in their everyday lives. Only with proper reason shall the people take interest and extend effort to join the event. Arming the people with knowledge and the will to learn is the first step in defeating stupidity and ignorance in the country, along with the problems they bring.#

resident, dictator, tyrant, these are tags commonly associated with the former President Ferdinand Marcos. Due to the trauma caused by the Martial Law, and of the released info of Marcos’ immoral acts and transactions, when Marcos died, the whole nation was fighting over whether he had the right to be buried among our countries heroes in the the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB). “Is he a hero?”, “Should he be buried at the heroes’ cemetery?”, these are the questions that divided the nation for many years, and has now been brought back to light when President Rodrigo Duterte publicly announced that he will allow Marcos to be buried in the LNMB. Duterte’s reason for Marcos’ burial is that, by law, as a former President, he has the right to be buried at the Libingan. Duterte added, it’s a matter of enforcing the law, which he swore to do upon accepting his presidency.

Marcos’ burial can also be seen as a political strategy. Although the country will never truly heal, his burial will put a stop to the conflicts.

There may come periods where people will rest but once another official proposes his burial in the LNMB, the population once again stirs. The current events now are proof of what happens when one brings up the controversy. Although it will cause chaos for some time, once Marcos is finally buried, future conflicts about his burial will finally be prevented. Prolonging this conflict will only cause further historical and political damage and confusion for future generations. Even in debates and arguments it is clear that information is negatively biased towards Marcos. As such, to remove this hatred and finally pacify the nation, we must let him and the country rest. However, for the country to truly forgive the Marcos family, they must first offer a proper and sincere apology rather than just repeatedly stating “mag-move on na kayo.”

Marcos’ case is similar to that of Thomas Edison, in which case it is the complete opposite.

Thomas Edison was praised for his success in innovating the light bulb, while people disregarded his failures. Marcos however, instead of appreciating what little things he actually did for our country, people choose to only remember what he did against it. Marcos might not have been a hero, but he was one of our nation’s best teachers. Marcos taught us what a leader could accomplish when given immense power with little restrictions, for good or for bad. He taught us how wealth and power can corrupt even the wisest of people, and how we should be more critical upon choosing our leaders, and not let them have their way without proper guidance and judgement.

Although his mistakes will continue to haunt us for several decades, the lessons we can learn from his mistakes will make the Filipinos wiser for generations to come. Unless we allow Marcos to be buried in our Heroes’ cemetery, and let our nation heal, the lessons we can learn from him shall always be clouded with the grudge we hold against him.

UNIQUELY CARVED - Eunice Joshua F. Gazmin

“I may not be a genius, but my opponents are certifiable idiots”- a courageous woman once said in her presidential campaign speech.

She valiantly defended our country and exposed all outlaws. She fearlessly ignored all the death threats she received. She is not terrified to stand up for what is right.

The Iron Lady of Asia – well who couldn’t know her? She is the brave, heroic, genius, loyal and loving Miriam Defensor Santiago that we know.

She has accomplished so much that even those who succeeded her barely follows her footsteps. She graduated in University of the Philippines (UP) as magna cum laude with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with an average grade of 1.1. She has her bachelor’s degree not only in the Philippines but also in some prestigious schools abroad, such as Harvard University (1996) and Oxford University (2000). She was also the very first Filipino judge to be elected (a nine-year term) in the International Criminal Court. She also won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government service and the 1985 TOYM Award for law, which were just few of the awards she received. This has barely represents the 10% of her achievements, so it wouldn’t be surprising that many youths around the nation or even around the globe adore her so much.

However, that’s not all what Senator Miriam Santiago is. Aside from her political accomplishments, who could have thought that there is a funny side of her?

She frequently gives quotes and “hugots” in her speeches.

She even had books wherein her quotes are published. It is entitled “Stupid is Forever”. Surely, having an overview of her life, anyone could think that the senator is living in a fairytale.

But just like any person, the Senator still has her ups and downs – very bitter downs. In 2003, his son, Alexander Robert committed suicide. This tragic event shook her faith. She began to question everything she believed existed.

Years later, she has been informed that she has a stage IV lung cancer. Surprisingly, instead of being depressed, she happily stood up and boldly conquers all the challenges she encounters. Tragically, on the 29th of September 2016, she gave her last breath. “Her brand of public service is worthy of emulation by future generations. She left a mark in the senate, difficult to follow and fill her shoes.” – as Franklin Drilon said. In fact, this is undeniably true. Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago gives inspiration to all Filipino people.

She has given so much in our country that it is almost difficult for us to repay her. That is why, even though she already left this world, she has her name written in history uniquely carved.

“The internet is so slow”

Thrashing in his seat with an annoyed face plastered on his face, the student quietly muttered things under his breath. This is an expression that is quite fondly made in the Philippines, mostly because of the slow internet connection in the country. He hoped that this annoyingly buggy Wi-Fi connection in the country would be resolved soon, as it had been a burden to him in his studies and his other activities.

He wished that the internet would become stronger, however, this seemed liked a long shot.

According to a survey made by Ookla, an online service that calculates the standards of the internet connection speed, the Philippines rank 21st out of 22 countries in the Asian continent having the fastest connection and is unsurprisingly ranked 176th from 202 countries all over the globe. However, it seems like it won’t be a long shot anymore.

With the coming of the Duterte administration, his promise of change is truly coming true. Duterte allowed the investments of successful telecommunication networks from foreign countries.

A prime example of this is Telstra, a popular network in Australia.

There have been discussions between the network and San Miguel Corporation for the latter’s venture in telecommunication in the Philippine market. It’s expected from the telco company to invest not less than $1 Billion dollars.

With this they will be able to set up a rather strong internet connection in the Philippines.

Soon, this dream of having a stronger internet would be a dream no longer with this new telco company’s promise of a faster broadband speed, and it would be a longshot no longer.

Imagine having a really hot day around. You might think that there are ways to stop the heat, like turning on the air conditioner. But what you don’t know is that using those things as solutions can only make things worse.

The world is now suffering from global warming which is caused by greenhouse gases, by which includes methane. And so you turn on the air-con, but it only releases CFCs that destroys the ozone layer, that causes the UV rays to directly enter the surface and cause more warming of the earth. Such a big problem, right? but imagine reducing that methane gas with tiny things we see inside shoeboxes.

When we open shoe boxes, we sometimes see a small packet of spherical things that are used to get rid of insects.

These things are called zeolites, and they’re way more than that.

According to a research performed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, zeolites have the ability to eliminate methane gas, which is one of the factors of global warming.By just collecting this things, we can already enjoy the day without complaining about the temperature!

Its actually kind of amazing, don’t you agree? Little things can really become great, big problems.

It feels as if it’s clockwork. When one’s treated, yet another one comes clambering to take the empty hospital bed that the cured patient left behind. It was a never-ending cycle, until the day it wasn’t.

May it be a child, or an elderly person, people come and go from the hospital, treating it kind of as if it was a drive-thru of a restaurant. The patients just take what they needed, pay for it, and leave. But sometimes, some people take a break there and rest, may it be only just a week or as long as a year, the hospital is somewhere that is bustling with activity. And now, it’s getting more and more packed.

An outbreak of a virus had spread throughout the community, people with faces plastered with concern and shock as they worried for their loved ones. The patients complained about rashes, and how it hurt to just move, their bloodshot eyes glinting as they began to feel how it hurt and how uncomfortable they were, with the mild fever that they also had. Soon, the people began questioning, was it dengue?

While one might say that it is indeed dengue, it is in fact, Chikungunya, a disease that has many similarities with Dengue, and just like dengue; it’s a disease that is typically spread by means of the mosquitos. Because of how similar they are, both of them confused many people. However, the defining thing that sets Chikungunya and Dengue apart is that unlike the latter, Chikungunya typically affects adults, rather than children. Though while the latter has a lot of cases of death, Chikungunya, on the other hand has no recorded case of death, and the virus usually are only present for at most 11 days.

Relieved at the notion of this, the patients began to relieve their selves, however, still had questions left unanswered, would it come back? How does one prevent it from developing again? Once

a person has been infected with Chikungunya, they typically wouldn’t be getting the virus again, as their immune system would have been able to identify the virus and think, ‘This is harmful to us, we should probably build a block for it to never harm us again’. To prevent people from getting the virus, the best prevention is cleanliness, and possibly destroying any means for the mosquitos to breed and possibly infect more people.

With these, soon enough, the outbreak will be gone and it will be back to normal. But now people would be carrying these new information, and soon enough, when another day comes, another person will be saved.

Only 2 parties bravely faced the crowd and answered questions of confusions and tests of their willingness to serve PSHS-CRC students. No one felt the assurance of winning, not even the previous officers wanting to serve the 2nd or 3rd time around. Definitely not even the popular kids have the confidence to say that they’re a step higher than their rival. A single word they say can change the decision of the voters and that somehow sums up what happened to the Miting de Avance and the election alone.

TAKE YOUR PICK AND LET YOUR PASSION DECIDE - Jeodvayn B. Estorco

Judgement day and elections have passed. I still can remember the day when a teacher told us that the election result has already been posted. I’ve heard cheers and sighs from a group of students on the hallway after taking a look at a certain bulletin board along the hallway. No wonder, those were the results. After seconds of struggling to see it (because fortunately I was blessed with such height), I finally saw it before my two eyes. I can see some familiar names written in front of me. They were those who already served the school before. And oh, the “confidently-handsome-with-aheart” has been chosen again. Yes, he’s Jace Kahlil G. Gumahad, the re-elected President, who’s by the way the son of the PTA president, Mr. Nestor Gumahad. What should I call it, anyway? Destiny? Or is it just this school’s just really meant to be led by a father and his son?

I guess the Pisay scholars don’t want to try something new. They still wanted the service Kahlil has been giving for almost 3 years now. Even the parents, they like how balanced Mr. Nestor Gumahad is. By balanced, I would mean that he’s both good in being funny and witty. Kahlil is just like him. Both of them are really

They said leaders are not born, they are trained. As what I am seeing these days, I could actually tell that the ability to lead could be inherited, too! So far so good. Re-elected for 2 years is just a sign saying that the tandem-Mr. Nestor and Kahlil Gumahad has been doing so well in keeping the school at peace.

Thanks to the two of them, being a pioneer doesn’t really become a burden to me. They have done everything for the students just to make them feel comfortable and at ease in school. They seem to be experts already when it comes to handling schools. They’re a legacy, indeed! This legacy will hopefully continue until the pioneers would eventually graduate 3 years from now. Not long after this, we are going to make this legacy unfold known to the next Pisay-CRC generations.

he sound of the crumbling fallen leaves and dirt can be heard as I walk toward the school ground. The beam of sunlight can be shown passing through each corner completely contrasting the inside of the cold classroom. Students busily gather to the center of the quadrangle, although it quite took them minutes to settle down and be in their own comfort as they anticipate what awaits them – the club fair.

It’s about finding the same color on your mind or mayhap relating similarities in order for you to stroke fluently on a white piece of artless sheet. Just the thought of it makes me grin with wonder. But what if we reverse to the other side? What if the club you liked or simply you fancy with is not on your favour? You simply just like the idea of it, like how your eyes glitter while fantastic thoughts keep running inside your head? But on the other side, other clubs are in your favour but you’re not as enthusiast?

Introductions were spoken vividly as it slowly sunk on our heads. Different teachers of different club adviser stood before us surely having a knack about their chosen category. Tilting my head to the side, choosing a club? What is that? Is that a mere whim of our minds just because we should excel in that particular category? Or just because quite few of them chose to be in that club and you let where the crowd flows fall. Science club, math club, dance club, glee, innovators club, inventors club, JEM or junior ecologist movement, visual arts, sports club, English publication, communicators club, and Filipino publication, many to think about and to choose who knows what. Although we only need to fill three clubs on this white tainted blank ink paper given to us, more clouded thoughts still lingered.

Rationally the latter one’s acceptable but in terms of finding your passion, the first one’s better. It’s just like how new born birds spread their wings wide open as they can and fly to mysterious horizon before you, not knowing the extent of their marvel. Just starting from the very bottom, but when you add devotion to it, you excel without you even realizing.

You just do what you feel like you should do for the greater good - pure natural yet intellectual instincts. But even greater when the club is on your favour and you have knack for it, just how far would you reach? Well completely astonishing.

It’s quite fascinating exactly, it’s just how it works and you just completely go with it.

Before I know it, the gracious words given to us by our heads came to an end, placing the decision on our own hands. Standing up, the look on my schoolmate’s face allowed me to decipher. Some are bored- neutral look in their face says they’re not really in to this by one bit, some looks they gave are written all over their face in which it’s kind of crumby. Shaking my thoughts and once again lost in my world.

To inform you guys out, they are unlike those politicians in the government who intentionally get their children into politics just for their own good.

To think about it, choosing a club doesn’t influence your grade, so why force to something you doesn’t want to? Though some factors may influence the club you prefer, it’s still your own choice. Nonetheless choosing a club means that being in a group where you most likely want to be. Where you’re comfortable with, where you have something hidden on your sleeves and that you have a knack for it that you might wonder “how did I even know this?” thinking that you didn’t know you have it in you It’s finding what you’re already good at and most importantly, where your passion lies.

As I made up my mind, I flicker my pen as I wrote three clubs that I desired. Now I just have to prove my choice and stand by it. Pure determination and decisiveness took over my system as I enter three doors one at a time.

Although we can only enter one club, the choice is up to me now - up to you. End it with a blast if not then leave it freezing, just like ending a hyperkinetic music video that left you with pure contentment and bliss. If one of the clubs didn’t accept you, don’t slouch and act like your main source of life was suck out of you. You did your best anyway. Doing your very best is the key to deflect downfall emotions.

And now at least you found where you belong, one club you really want. And now maybe just maybe you found your passion.

Transitioning between the easy going flow of my sweet, sweet elementary life to the hectic and stress filled chaos of my first year in Pisay wasn’t easy. It was stitched with bumps and lumps and I barely had any time to sit back and breathe properly because at any given time a teacher of mine could be planning the next failure of my life. I felt tired, exhausted and I found it a tad bit difficult to keep moving. Yes, it was a disastrous change and no one in their sane mind would want that, but did it destroy my individuality?

Philippine Science High School is a difficult institution to get into.

Thousands to millions of students bet on their skills and stocked intelligence every year just to snag themselves a position among the limited slots and yet only the ones who managed to top themselves could experience the wonders of PhilScie.

It sounds excrcuciating, doesn’t it? It is, yes, but not in the way people think.

We are actually fully functioning individuals with our own unique quirks and personalities, strange hobbies and own humanly desires. We are not entirely pressured to maintain anything because we all work on our pace.

We don’t push our limits pass its breaking point.

We enjoy our adolescent years too since we, the supposed ‘bookaholics’, are just like every other student out there with the exception of being able to cram hundreds of notes within a given time limit.

Some of us are interested in the anime and manga community; a vast number of us ogle over interesting and mind-sharpening TV shows and networks; and a majority of us even invest a lot of our time playing online games or wasting hours jamming away with our friends to sick beats.

We actually have talented pupils too who, if given a chance, could sketch and illustrate portraits almost as vivid as Rembrandt’s, write hundreds of literary works as scintillating as Poe’s, program games and sites as good as Notch, or maybe depict Sorabji’s arduous Opus Clavicembalisticum.

We are just like any normal high schooler.

Attending the intricate and proud school of Philippine Science High School is a huge privilege to all of us scholars but it doesn’t really stand as a label that marks us as ‘NERDS’ in size seventy-two bold.

It’s just a place we call our second home. A place where we hone our similar and individual traits and skills and train ourselves for the better of our future. Being a Pisay student isn’t what makes us ourselves. We are not big nerds.

Not all of us are decorated with glasses or braces. We don’t always stuff our noses into books. We’re fun too if we want to be.

I have a name but can’t be acknowledged. Grows but can’t age. Born but no legal parents. Stands in a block of earth but can’t be located.

Breathes, walks, ages, pumps blood, feels and sees but a ghost to the nation. All these are caused by the absence of a piece of paper, the birth certificate.

They would wear pig tails and skirts while I wear grass and camouflage pants. They would have pretty bags on their arms while I have guns strapped to my shouders. They would have

school to look forward to while I do not even have a home to look back to.

Home is but an imagery of a thing that I can never have. My home is a cage without walls, I may seem free. My feet has no limit but someone is always watching me. In my world of thoughts, I may seem free. Talking and screaming as I want but no

one can hear me. In my room full of people I may seem free.

In times of downfall wherein situations don’t go as planned, most of our views shifted. It transforms opposite to what we believed before.

It’s somewhat slowly dragging us away from the glittering light that served as your guide to your goal. The goal wherein it is transplanted to a map, without the light you might not see the directions and end up getting lost.

But what can we do? We’re just a human after all. We feel. We feel out of ourselves, that the moment when we sought and think, we are encountered by the perplex hue of our own minds.

That every wind that past by you comes out dull, every chirp of the birds comes out horrid through your ears.

Every smile you saw comes out as a frown. Every laugh you heard comes out as a sob and every word they said comes out as a lie. A false promise.

To think about it nothing wondrous will happen if you’ll just stay at bay. You’re just sitting still, and accepting defeat without you even realizing. You keep talking and talking without changing your situation. Might as well close your mouth, might save you the energy.

But you know, I can’t blame you either way. It’s because you’re blinded by the dark, that you only saw negativity among positivity, irrationality among rationality and despair among hope. But if you truly want to be free that has and currently been weighing you down- then move.

If you don’t have a light, grab a candle. Don’t have a candle? Find one. Make it simple. Find a way no matter what it takes just to light up your map and get in track to your goal again. Sort out your thoughts and emotions and pour the overflowing fluids out of your glass. Remember you’re in control here, so you’re in control of your desired outcome. You lead, they follow.

Not all are a disadvantage when dwelling in the dark corners. Through mind’s contemplation it seemingly made you stronger than before, made you wiser than your past self and maybe perhaps cautious when life throws anything at you. After all dark corners are all around you. You just have to deal with it with your perspective, it’s the key to change.

Love is painful for it transfigures. Its transformation is going to be filled with pain so the old has to leave making room for the new. You`ll never love a person you hold dear unless you risk for love. Love endeavors in hurting. If you don’t get hurt, you won’t learn how to love. The old is familiar, sheltered, benign, the new is unequivocally unknown. It will be like sailing into an open ocean, new and yet to be discovered. With no use of your mind in the new, the mind is outright hopeless.

The mind can function only with the old for with the old, the mind is skillful. Thus, fear consumes all leaving the timeworn, comfy, innocuous world of suitability. Both the fear and uncertainty of the unknown and the safety and unpredictability of the known makes one very much frightened. Because of the pain of love, millions live a loveless life. They too suffer, and their suffering is vain. To suffer in love must not be to suffer in vain for it is creative. It will take you to higher levels of consciousness.

To suffer without love is an outright waste. It leads you nowhere and will keep you moving in the same vicious loop.

Relationship is like a looking glass. The purer the love is, the higher the love is, the better and the cleaner the glass can be. But the higher love requires openness. The higher love wants you to be vulnerable. Painful it may be but you have to drop your shield and not be constantly guarded. Drop the calculating mind to risk, to try, and to live dangerously. The other can hurt you giving you the fear of vulnerability. The other can reject you making you fear of being in love. The reflection that you will find in the other of your own self may be ugly thus giving you anxiety. Don’t gaze through the looking glass. But avoiding the glass will not make you any more beautiful. And by avoiding the situation, you are not going to grow either. Dare to challenge for it must be taken. Love doesn’t hurt every time. Though it will always be there to test you, but also to help you grow. Don’t find love, let it find you. For it will always be called falling in love because you don’t force yourself to fall but to just fall...

Love is like an open sky. Being in love is like being on the wing but the absolute sky forms fear. And dropping the ego is very painful knowing all our life we have been taught to cultivate that ego. We ought to ponder that the ego is our only gem. So we have been protecting, decorating and continuously polishing it, and when love knocks on the door, all that is needed to fall in love is to put aside the ego which some find undoubtedly difficult. All that you have put together, your whole life’s work— this ugly ego’s idea that “I am detached from actuality“, is ugly because it is fictitious. The idea is erroneous, but society subsists on the thought that each person is a person not a presence. In truth, there is no person at all in the world but only presence. You are not, not even as an ego, separate from the whole but part of it.

The whole infiltrates you, the whole take breaths in you, thuds in you - the whole is your life.

Love generates problems. But you will be avoiding love if you choose to avoid those problems. They have to be cope with, stumble upon, they have to be lived and gone over and done with. Go into love whatever the pain. You are stuck with yourself as many people have decided if you don’t go into love. Then Life will not be a pilgrimage and not be a river going to the ocean. Your life will be like a stagnant pool, dirty, and soon there will be nothing but dirt and mud. For constant cleansing, one needs to keep flowing. A river remains clean for it goes on flowing and flowing. People who don’t love become dormant, stagnant’ they start stinking sooner or later they have nowhere to go. That’s where modern man finds himself, and for this reason, all kinds of neuroses, all kinds of foolishness, have become proliferating. Psychological illness has taken epidemic magnitudes. No more than a few individuals are psychologically ill and the reality is the world has become a madhouse. Almost of humanity is in woe from a kind of neurosis.

Love is painful, but don’t elude it. Love is an aching peril to take but no matter how scary it can be, peril will always be there. If you’re not ready to risk it, if you’re not ready to ache, then you’re not ready to fall in love. Some may be afraid to fall in love because they get hurt every time. Avoiding it would mean avoiding the greatest opportunity to grow. Through suffering comes great ecstasy. Go into it, suffer love. Love is like a knife. It either stabs the heart or carve wonderful images into the soul that will always last for a lifetime. Loving people means giving people the chance to choose. It is giving them the freedom to find their way to either towards you or away from you. Let there be pain, let there be suffering. Love is supposed to be the most delightful sensation. It should inspire you, give you happiness and a strong suit. But sometimes the things that give you joy can hurt you in the end.

I met this wonderful girl. She was like this perfectly baked cake. Odd the comparison may be but she was perfect from the icing to the core. It took me months for her to notice me. And as I got to know her more, I got to see her imperfections.

But that didn’t make me dislike her. In fact, I grow fond of her more. The closer we got, the more I want to confess what I felt. But she was this angel scared to open her wings. Scared to fly, scared to fall. I would’ve been there to catch you if only you chose to freefall.

SPIRITUAL AMNESIA

ecently I have been opened to the thought of God ‘not existing’. Opinions chattering to an ear to another seem to have filled me with curiosity and what-ifs of having no God. Questions like: Is Christianity a myth? a public deception? or does it really have the legit life of a sentient God? These seem to trouble me from time to time. But on the other hand, how do you define good and evil without a God to authenticate moral order?

All these pros and cons of both sides and the issue of the unfeasibility of getting to an absolute ought from the ises of the material world alone—and the chilling insinuations that had for any kind of moral code—still remained unresolved. They say it is better to be somehow be in between so to maintain an elusive guilt, an elusive view of nobody’s-perfect, and all against the infinite void of evolutionary chaos, which keeps everything sufficiently blurred. And the result of this lead me to much confusion and realized this maybe some sort of spiritual amnesia.

I do not know if it’s the religious side of me tingling or I’m just as usual being rational about it. I miss the spiritual connection that I used to have whenever I pray knowing that now, I only asked for what I need and for what I want with no remorse for my Godly sorrows. The feeling during praise and worship that expresses my inmost feelings to God that a deep yearning arises in my soul is now just a feeling of emptiness giving room only for appreciation of the music used for worship. I feel shameful sitting in church thinking that I have doubts of the existence of the man nailed on the cross in front of me. And I forget that without faith, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Looking back on what my faith in God has done to me - recalling how God answered an impossible request of mine, how he was able to inspire me to seek out the goodness in deep anguish, and many other blessings, made me realized that I was in some need of chemotherapy for spiritual amnesia.

Going through a recollection in my guesses, might help me draw closer to Him. I walked in the venue with the same attitude I have in every Sunday gatherings. I came with expectations and hope to have a spiritual and emotional experience that would help me through my life. I do consider the event a success but the spiritual feeling I felt is still different from what I used to have. I say it’s a step by step process to have a more deep assurance of spiritual mindedness. This spiritual amnesia is not just a pain in the tummy grumbling or high blood pressure whining. This was faithlessness.

Faith is not an extensive understanding of how the world works. Faith believes on certain things that remain unseen. Faith sees the wonder of stars and gazes. Faith sees a baby wrapped in cloth as her mother carries the youngling while shedding tears of joy. Faith sees not just the minds of the pure but also of the wicked. And the list goes on and on and on and on. The words above are just some of the many expressions people often utter upon looking at a tired and weary Pisay Scholar. One look and you’ll know.

“How’s your Pisay life?” People often ask us that. We have a lot of words to describe but always end up saying “Fine as usual”.

Life is indeed a roller coaster ride, and that also perfectly explains how we, scholars, are doing as we face each day with a brave smile not knowing what might happen.

Being a scholar for quite a while, I have seen how all of us struggled to go on, and so, here are some of the periods that most, if not all, Scholars have gone through during their Pisay life.

“Lucky Me Period”

- Chill Chill moment, movie time, celebration, enjoy with friends, smile and laugh while you still have teeth, thank you Lord -This is a period where there are no quizzes, activities or projects to be submitted. These are also the lucky times where you pass a quiz or an exam that you did not study for, times that you feel triumphant, splendid and genius because you did not expect that you are capable of doing things you least expected you could. In short, a stress-free period!

“The Rebonded Grades”

- “Bes tulad ng buhok ko yung grades ko, BAGSAK.” - This is a heartbreaking time usually a week after quarter exams.

We all know the feeling of being happy that we survived another exam week but become depressed because our grades will be shown not so soon after.

- Some are given “Love letters” that are needed to be signed by their parents and are sent to the guidance office for counselling. But what makes it fun is knowing that your friends failed, too. Then you’ll know you are not alone after all!

“Promises are made to be broken”

- “I will start studying next quarter, promise.” “I will start making projects next quarter, promise.” “I’ll do well next quarter, promise.”

- Bes, nasaan na yung pangako mo last quarter?

- It’s really just like the New Year’s resolution you planned long time ago that never happened, “I will go on a diet this year. I promise.” But there are still a lot more opportunities to be better, don’t lose hope!

- “Ang tulog mababawi, ang singko HINDI.” - Project and assignment to be passed? Long test in a major subject?

3 quizzes? Articles and lay out to make (for students who are in publications)? All in one day? EZ. - This is the time where you suddenly forget how to even take a nap, a time where coffee becomes your water just to be wide awake in order to finish everything.

- This is a point where you become so religious and Godly all of a sudden.

There comes an instance in your Pisay life that your last and only hope is to have faith in God and ask for miracles for you to survive especially when quarter exams are coming but you didn’t study because you don’t have any motivation and determination or in other words, you are just too lazy to review. But remember, we must pray every day, not just when we need something from Him.

“Bakit ba ako nag Pisay?”

-We can never deny that we, at least for once, asked ourselves the question, “Bakit ba ako nag Pisay?” (Why did I choose Pisay?) We can never refute that there are times that we get curious what our life would have been if we chose other school over Pisay and imagined it would have been easier. These are the times that we feel bit of regrets and the desire to quit. It’s sad, but it’s true. Whenever we feel this, always remember that there are a lot of kids out there who desperately want a chance to study in Pisay and even cry over it. You are one blessed kid. Never surrender.

Experiences mentioned are part of our lives in Pisay. Be glad that you still have the strength to carry on. Know that you are not the only one. Others have gone through them all, too. I’ve been there, my friend. Never ever give up. Keep chasing your dreams. You are fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity. Savour it, be thankful and always pray. You failed a major subject? You haven’t passed a test you studied for? You didn’t get the grade you expected to get? Relax. There are still many more quarters to come.

Everything has a reason why it happened.

Yes, we are haggard, strained, and frazzled, but on top of that, we are still the typical teenagers that are valiant and are all beautiful with a heart. No amount of eye bags and no amount of pimples can be a hindrance for us to still face the world with a smile and laugh like there are no tests to study for.

I, a Pisay scholar, am proud that I survived.

It

was just like any other Friday morning. The sun was scorching hot and I was stunned by the desert-like appearance of the field yet my feet and fate brought me to one of the glorious creations ever existing.

School. I hate it. I hate the thought of it. I hate the fact that I need to get up early just to go to a place in which I never really like in the first place. I hate waking up earlier than 8, I hate wearing those yellow uniforms that makes me look shorter and skinnier than ever… But this time things were different. I was somehow eager to be in school, not because there are no quizzes nor assignments to pass, but because there is a day where I no longer care to remember any of those school related stuff. Thank God we were finally heading somewhere. Thank God we were going outdoors.

Thank God we were in a place in which luckily you’re no longer required to wear uniforms or bring notebooks and all those enormous textbooks which probably is one of the reasons why I never grow taller.

We were finally in a place where requirements, homeworks and quizzes no longer take place. We were in a camp. Sure it isn’t really like those normal camps where you’d build a tent, go start a campfire and tell each other horror stories until you all fall asleep, it’s a camp that tests your skills in science, where you’d work together as a team to win or achieve the highest award possible. Luckily I had GREAT teammates.

AFTER SCHOOL SHENANIGANS

espite the semi-bipolar weather that graced everyone, it was perhaps the perfect day for a gathering of exhilarated students, teachers and staff at the site of where the Philippine Science High School Caraga Region Campus buildings stood. After a tiresome day at school, there was finally something to look forward to in a Monday.

It was also a chance to view where we will spend the rest of our high school days, and that we may have a clue about its progression. The horde of multicabs transported hyped scholars from the temporary school to Brgy. Tiniwisan, where the humongous school was nestled. The radiating excitement was evident on everyone’s bright faces, and it was no doubt an event that everyone would be glad to be part of.

With the enlivened atmosphere that wreathed the the event, the brief program included the renewal of the teachers and staff and the intermission from the Glee Club that left the audience in awe.

At

the dawn of twilight, the evening breeze rustled the leaves of towering trees, and brushed past a weary local who was none other than I. Nestled further into woods was the Bood Eco Park, the site we visited five years ago. For some reason, I found myself coming back here again. The thought of making my way upwards on a hill seemed exhausting but with unwavering determination, I continue because I came here with a reason. Alas, I arrive at where I want to be. The cool, misty air sent a chill down my spine for the night and darkness was rapidly crawling into the horizon. Nevertheless, I stand courageous in front of the humongous cross that stood unfaltering. Almost instantly, a kaleidoscope of memories came rushing towards me, and perched on that very hill, I start to reminisce.

“The first Easter mass was held here in Butuan, originally, and not in Leyte.” These first words uttered by the caretaker of the Bood Eco Park still lingers in my mind, and every word seemed so clear it was as if it was said just yesterday and not five years ago. This remarkable place held the history that would make Butuanons proud. The scent of early summer night was nostalgic, and it made me relive the moment back when my classmates and I went here to visit and to lend our ears to the history we never knew. It was

the green visitations that throve among the farm, and the ancient Manobo house which will surely astonish you with its walls and floors that is made out of bamboo.

It all happened there. Those towering trees, and greenery spacious place that is really conducive for meditation and camping was one of the wonders of the camp. The very informative lecture of the owner about climate change and all necessary information about every tall and shady tree that surrounds us has indeed stunned me. And who could ever forget the horses!

The farm offers enjoyable horseback riding and training for a very affordable price.

Surely it’s one of the recreational activities you will enjoy in this place.

With all the beauty that surrounds me I could not be much happier to be a part of this activity. Yes it was tiring. Sure we didn’t won any awards, but the thing is, I had fun. And I know in myself that I did my best in utmost every activity that I’ve participated. Plus being able to see and witness the beauty that God has shed in this place, being able to participate and interact with my campmates is already considered winning for me.

I do not need a medal or a trophy to be considered as a winner. As long as I’ve experienced this, I could say that I have won.

As the day comes to an end. I breathed a sigh not of relief but of gratefulness that God had given me a chance to see and experience this wonderful masterpiece.

And to add amusement, they conducted parlor games, with each members of every club participating. Up to this point, excitement was building up, despite the glaring sun as it sets on the horizon. And, no drizzling would be a reason for us to stop or postpone the already on-going program because yes, the Pisay family can withstand all sorts of irregularities.

From the moment we arrived there, all I ever felt was happiness. Ultimate happiness. I was so excited to be part of something that I really like. And I am eternally grateful.

The most looked forward part of the event, according to the majority, is the partaking of foods of different variety.

Suddenly there was pandemonium of starving individuals, reaching out to any scrumptious delicacy that grabbed hold of their attention and even a mass of students argued over what seemed like a chicken leg. “This is definitely the essence of a picnic,” someone from within earshot had said.

Everyone was laughing and probably having the time of their lives, and no one would even bother to point out to someone to not talk with their mouth full. It was like a day to let loose and just have fun.

For these jovial memories to be remembered by each, photographs of each club with its members were taken, even with food stained uniforms and crammed pockets with takeaways. It was certain that while some were unfazed, most were filled with euphoria. Who would know that just this simple gathering could take away the stress of hundreds? With the camaraderie built and the thriving bonds of students and even club members, it has made this day definitely a remarkable one that each Pisay scholar would never forget.

It was as if we were in a lecture, except that the history being told is somehow being rewritten. Wideeyed and mouth agape, we couldn’t believe what we’re hearing.

Knowing and learning new things, a lot of questions arose, adding up to unanswered ones. “So does this mean all we’re told isn’t the truth?” We were skeptical, uncertain but even so we’re astounded.

Although unproven and unofficial, the unwritten history that we’re devoid from was like music to our ears. My first time hearing this, an uncalled for surge of pride filled me, because there’s nothing more exhilarating than being a native from somewhere which was discovered earlier than its entire country.

UNDISCLOSED HISTORY

According to the caretaker, who seemed very eager and willing to partake the true history that he believes in, it began like this: Dating back to hundreds of years ago, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was believed to have sought a mountainous region to shelter him and his company, away from the raging typhoons that have seemed to strike on islands. So his ship docked in Butuan first, and not in Leyte. It was only when they were trying to sail towards uncharted waters and into Cebu that they came across Leyte, and met their fate in a local war. On this very hill, they erected a huge cross, and they held the very first Easter mass along with the

governing Rajah of the entire Mindanao. The original Agusan River was the one we can see from the Bood Eco Park, so the caretaker said. Before, there were two, but due to constant earthquakes and the moving of the tectonic plates, the original one narrowed down, so the current Agusan River became the wider one. Walking down the pathway, I continue to ponder and get lost in my thoughts. Strolling around the park despite the dark gave me a lot of moment and time to think.

“Before, there was no the Philippines, but there was Butuan.” The thought alone is bewildering. Could it really be? I vividly remembered my young self being so perplexed and amazed at the same time.

To think that this land we stood upon was the very first to be found, not the other regions of Luzon and Visayas, but this land. The stars were slowly becoming visible and darkness has completely engulfed the sky.

I turn towards to where I first entered the park, and I began to leave the place, skipping all the way. Remembering a pleasant memory left a proud feeling of adoration and amazement in me. Little doubts may seemed to have lingered in the back of my mind, but guess what? I know that surely, the threads of truth will unravel, and we will all know . I guess I’ll have to leave that to fate. Wandering through the shadows of trees and into my way back, a small smile makes its way into my face.
